>You are one of three characters: Samson, a spoiled bard, Dyrus, an axe-wielding prince crowned by a successful rebellion, or Rene, an orphan adopted by a high-ranking Director of an declining Empire, now a prepromoted archer-lancer. Dyrus bemoans having to pass through the desert again. Anticipating little conflict as the rebels pass through the former Desert Region of the increasingly-defunct Empire, there's plenty of time for idle chit-chat on the sandy roads of magic. The Vautou respect the Kingdom of Noba, and the Desert Region was always more concerned with magical advancement than actual conquest, bar their late Director's hatred for the winged men. Marduk, meanwhile, helps Belle grow more comfortable around wyverns (and himself), the two of them often watching the prince and Winona's lessons. Quietly, Dyrus REALLY hope that it's what he thinks it is, because that makes his life a little simpler.

Laurise, meanwhile, is prepared only for a mundane banditslaying, albeit one expected to have mixed company of both Wolfskin and Tarvosian outlaws. None the wiser are she, her grandfather, and her beloved Felix to the fact that they're walking right into the mitts of Rene as they try to save Director Chiffon from his own noble concern for his people.

You are Samson, however, far from these familial dramas as ever, having managed to keep Adelais Dory's men in line enough not to rob the historic home of the late Director Waldrick. Hera, you reason to yourself, held the man in very high regard as a leader, and you swore to Hera as she died that your actions would leave the islands a better place. Plus, you've met his daughter, and don't intend to be pointlessly cruel. Intent on traveling by your side, Adelais bids her crew farewell to board with yours.

"How I've missed 'er," Adam reflects, looking over Alfred's old smuggling ship. "A small vessel, can only have so much of a crew, but its speed and size're what make it great."

Hal goes to talk to Adam about Alfred, having kinda-sorta known him during his time with Rene. "Real quiet guy, didn't seem at all fond of the Empire... Didn't like anyone alive but Veiz, I don't think."

It's a relaxing trip, compared to the last several months of your life.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mCDZvliyFuc

Adam talks Adelais and Hal's ears off about some of the daring exploits he and Alfred pulled in this very vessel, earning the admiration of Ada as she listens in on such tales as the Wyrmite heist.

"And... This same daring Adam ended up brainwashed by the Empire?" She asks, balling up her fists.

"Like I said, it's more that the only people he thinks ever treated him good in his life are Veiz and his crew... Uh, he thinks you're ALL dead by the way, Adam," Hal answers.

"A reasonable conclusion t'draw..." Adam shakes his head, "but this stuff in 'is head they filled about King Augustus wantin' him outta the way after we served our purpose? All lies."

Fabrice mostly spends his time going over his records, making sure everything is in line to report to Sir Jovan upon return to Noba.

Edwyg and Dinah seem distant from each other, an odd departure from their usual dynamic, for a couple days there, but before anyone can snoop or speculate as to what's gone wrong between them things are right as rain again.

Norman and Millicent speculate over how their parents are doing, leaving you excited to see your wonderful cat for the first time in months. You daydream for hours on end about petting her, only snapped out of it by a smack upside the head by Edwyg as you come close to sunburning.

Yeah, this ship is amazing! You're only a day from Holmstead now!

Holmstead has far less Gerxel naval ships in its ports, a grand total of one that's already being converted into a waterside museum, never to leave its out-of-the-way section of the port. All others were either lost somewhere in Coastal, reclaimed and repainted in Noban colors, or you don't even know what.

"The air around here feels... Different, again," Millie muses shortly after you draw close. "It's not the same... Menacing one as Coastal Gerxel, but there's still plenty different about its feeling that..." Drawing closer still, a wide grin fills her face, and she begins waving to the harbor. "Gods, Norman, come look at this! Look who's here!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8SuZ20kAQ4E

Norman slowly approaches, squinting at the horizon before grinning. At the docks are the siblings' parents, the father holding your cat up. By them, those border guards/Holmstead guards, Jack and Riley, and a few people you vaguely recognize from collegetimes.

"T-Tiltyu! I'm coming, Tiltyu..!" You call out, joining in on the overenthusiastic waving.

"Which of them's Tiltyu?" Hal asks, "I don't really know your families..."

"She's the cat," you excitedly mention to him, "and I'm so happy to see her and... Wait, is it really safe for her so close to the docks? Dammit, Adam, full speed ahead before she decides to jump out and try to swim to me!"

"I don't think any cat's gonna be that enthusiastic to swim through saltwater..." Hal remarks, chuckling a bit. "I mean, maybe your cat's weird, heck if I know, but... I dunno, never met a cat like that's all..."

"Cat cat cat cat cat cat," you repeat to yourself under your breath.

"Uh... You alright there, bud?" Hal asks, laughs now awkward from being weirded out.

"He's missed Tiltyu is all," Millie responds, giggling.

"And here I always thought Tiltyu was a made-up girlfriend or something," Hal says, shaking his head, "it'd explain why none of us ever met her for how much he doted on her..."

Edwyg laughs uproariously, only to be met with a neutral look from Dinah. "What, this is gold? I'm likin' Holmstead already and we ain't set foot in it yet!"

As soon as you dock, you rush off of the boat, nearly tripping as you hurry over to your cat. "Come here, baby!" You accept your beloved pet, rubbing her close to your face and grinning like an idiot. You're surprised that this doesn't completely and immediately shatter people's perception of you as a war hero, but everyone is too busy to judge as you embrace the purring furball in your arms.

"H-Hal, is that you?" One of the collegegoers asks, noting your friend. "Shit, dude, everyone thought you died in the desert or something!"

"Welcome back, scatterbrain," another excited young man says.

"No, no, I'm not dead," Hal says, "but I did get lost a lot... Boy, let me tell you all about it later. We're tired from a whole lot of boating right now, and there's only one thing that'll quench me. Maybe, uh, loosen my lips a little more for storytime, too."

"Not a problem, man! Let us buy you all a drink!"

"Gonna roll out the welcome wagon for us, too?" Edwyg asks, met only with blank stares. Confused a moment, she touches her disfigured face, scrunching it up a bit. "Oh, right. You're a buncha wimps. Forgot about normal folk scarin' easy."

Regardless, by assorted means, everyone besides yourself, Norman, Millicent, and Fabrice go to enjoy your stay in Holmstead, leaving you with Tiltyu, Millie's parents, Jack, and Riley.

You know what? What the hell. You deserve a break to be merry with mage acquaintances. You were never particularly close to, well, any of them, but after kissing your cat goodbye and handing her off to Millicent, you follow the other magical academy boys.

You and Hal were the only ones to accept their offer. Edwyg, Dinah, and Adelais went off on their own for a more girl-oriented day of getting plastered, while Adam reflected alone elsewhere in the harbor.

You're not much of a drinker under normal circumstances, but it's a special occasion, you're back in town, and if you're being honest with yourself you feel closer to mother by partaking, even if memories of her... problem only encourage you to keep these occasions even fewer and further between.

"So what's the good news?" You ask, enjoying the atmosphere of Holmstead.

"Well, we got the Empire out again, of course," one fellow says, "but, uh... Yeah, we're officially part of Noba's Phile region now. Duke Philip's pretty hands-of, though, so we barely notice aside from a Lord Michael replacing Lord Gaspen... Er, no one ever found him, by the way. We think he's dead. All in all, better'n the worst-case scenario Raleigh assumed we'd be facing anyway..."

"That's... Good to hear, I guess," you say, "honestly, all I set out wanting outta this whole war is Holmstead getting to stay carefree and beautiful. If being part of Noba doesn't stop that, far be it from me to complain."

"Still, though, I think we oughtta dedicate this next round to the man himself who.. Couldn't be with us today, and to the old favorite customer here." Hal raises his glass. "To Raleigh, and to Marion! Inspirations to everyone!"

"To Raleigh and Marion!"

"And... Here's to my good friend here seeing his father again, alive and well!" Hal gestures towards you, glass still raised. "To professor Lazare, who wants nothing more than this comfort to be for everyone!"

"To Prof. Lazare!"

"Th-thank you all..." You choke out, honestly tearing up a bit. You barely know any of these people, and yet this simple gesture after months of daring and death is enough to bring you to tears. "I won't be gone much longer... Hal and I and all the rest of us are gonna keep moments like this safe from the rest of the Empire!"

The next morning, Jack and Riley accompany the rest of your group up along the road to August's Reach, you and Hal leaving your college acquaintances with an "until we meet again!"

You pass through the village of Alder on the way up to the capital, a moment that doesn't hold much sentimentality for you despite your brief stay there, but is host to some tender moments between Dinah and Edwyg.

Soon enough the lot of you are on the road again, and you guess Jack and Riley are just... On your team now. Also, they got married in the interim between your last time meeting them. Yaay.

"It felt so good to be back in Holmstead for a little bit," Hal admits in a talk between you, him, and Norman. "It's been... Well, I mean, you guys can relate, right?"

"Yeah, but we still got beautiful seas and friends to suffer by," you retort, "while you got a year and a half in an awful desert, pretending to be even more of a fool than you already were and fending off winged bandits."

"...I like sand," Norman adds. "How's the game in the desert?"

"Terrible, naturally," Hal responds, "everything's centered around oases and exports, and about the only thing worth eating that grows around there is Belhara fruits..." He smacks his lips. "Those are AMAZING if you like a bit of spice, though. Really bring out the best in any savory dish."

"...I doubt they'll ever outclass blackberries," you respond. "Not that I've, er, had belharas. But I'm adventurous. Maybe I'll sample them sometime."

"None of these things bleed, so they can't possibly be the greatest food ever," Norman objects. "I went too long on fish and... Well, I appreciate hunting even more than I already did."

"The Wolfskin region really liked its game meats, too," Hal says. "I say we've already domesticated the best meat too well to worry about hunting. Rub a beef steak in Belhara juice, cook it rare... You'd really like Saye. She and Rene went on plenty of hunting trips, and she loved hers bloody like you."

"...I wouldn't like Rene?" He asks.

"She PREFERS meats well-done," Hal says with visible exhilaration. "She's nice enough if you're not her enemy, but that's just."

"...what's wrong with that?" You ask, raising an eyebrow. "I mean, it makes the meat safer to consume, and..."

The judgmental looks of both Hal and Norman shut you up immediately.

"A-anyway, as long as we're talking about Rene's friends!" You clear your throat. "It's... Pretty likely that we'll run into her when we face Director Belinda. Who would you say are the most powerful people in her group?"

"Well, I mean... Rene herself, duh," Hal answers, "she's deadly and won't ever question an order. If they tell her to kill us, there's no way in hell that's ending until someone stops moving. Saye is next-toughest, I'd say. She's resilient and strong as all hell, shrugs off damage until she passes out bleeding. Marduk, he's... No, wait, Marduk defected to Lady Hauteclere. Cicero, though. Cicero may be the scariest. Nicest, most helpful guy you ever met, but nothing gets by him. I don't think he ever trusted me, and I thank my lucky stars he never put a knife in me. He's a bona fide Peshkatz assassin, and if he had to he could easily kill at least one of us. Good luck getting him anywhere far from Rene, though. Kris, though, she's... I told you about her. Oversaw that massacre in Oswald's hideout. Sure, her mages were there too, but it was mostly her monsters doing the heavy lifting and leaving the humans on cleanup. Cruel as her grandpa, but she doesn't hide it at all."

"Weak links?" You ask.

"Veiz and Alfred, definitely," Hal answers. "She plays the dutiful daughter, but... Like I said, Alfred trusts her. She's better than all of them, all of this. I think she only stays because of Rene, and we know Alfred only stays because of Veiz."

"Whew," you exhale, eyes a bit wide. "You paid attention to all that?"

"And see, no one suspects a thing because I'm stupid!" Hal boasts, oddly proud of his faults. "I have no sense of direction, I'll do anything on a dare, and I'm a clumsy coward."

"Hah, yeah," you respond, getting into the self-deprecating humor, "and I'm a complete wreck pretending to have my shit together and shoving my foot down my throat."

"...those are bad things," Norman responds, blinking.

"Can we not celebrate our flaws?" You ask rhetorically. "They define us just as much as our feats, no, moreso than them. History will write of our victories and achievements for 200 years, but none of them will bother to point out what awful messes the lot of us are."

"Hear, hear," Hal responds, nodding, no pun intended, sagely.

Norman looks up in the air for several moments, pursing his lips, before speaking up, "I'm quiet and don't always understand things people say. People look at me like I'm weird." After an awkward silence, he smiles a bit.

"Here's to idiocy!" Hal calls out, holding out his hand.

"To idiocy," you and Norman repeat, putting yours in with his.

"To screwups!"

"To screwups." Your hands all raise up into the air as you share grins.

And of course, you're never one to neglect the person who's number one in your heart!

"I'm sorry, I'm still just... I'm not over how you were with Tiltyu when we were back home," Millie says, still cracking up days later.

"I care a lot about my cat," you answer, frowning.

"I know, I know, it's just... How many people saw!"

"Alright, yeah... I'm embarrassing," you admit, smiling sheepishly. "Seeing Tiltyu again inspires me, though. Sure, I'll have plenty of time to pen epics and publish histories, but I think the world needs something relaxing and sane at the same time."

"What're you talking about?" She asks.

"I mean... Something that'll interest younger people in reading, provide a bit of comfort, levity, and mundanity for anyone who opens it up."

"So, like..." Millicent blinks. "Okay, I don't follow."

"A simple, comedic series about a cat and her owner. Something as timeless and ubiquitous as owning a cat who does silly things sometimes. It feels like it would be relaxing to write about, too, and... I'll need some downtime when all this war business is done with. It'll be a little pet project for my own state of mind, basically."

"Eheh, pet project," Millie responds. "I mean... If it's going to be directed towards younger readers, maybe it should have illustrations..."

"My thoughts exactly," you reply, "so I'll either need to learn to draw or find someone who can..."

You and Millicent spend hours of the day planning for this little idea of yours, coming up with such simple sources of humor as the fictional version of Tiltyu to have a favorite human food, or a distaste for a certain day of the week.

These are the only two jokes you come up with, but you're sure you'll figure out more later.

Eventually, though, Millie veers the subject towards your newest allies. "So, Jack and Riley got married, huh?"

"Did... You want to?" You ask, genuinely not sure if that's what she's getting at or if you're just reading into things wrong. Shit, you're reading it wrong, aren't you? Shit shit shit shit shit shit.

"I mean... Er, not that I put too much thought into it or anything," she's turning as red as her hair, "but... I mean, if you wanted to sometime, I'd... Like it... A lot..."

Your cheeks burn bright as you try talking this over too, stammering, "I mean... Yeah, definitely when this has all been sorted out! I know, this isn't much of a proposal, but this is sort of out of the blue... I'll find some nice rings when we're in August's Reach, alright?"

"Should I pretend to be surprised when you show me?" She asks, giggling a bit and approaching you, nuzzling against you affectionately.

"I mean... Yes? No? I dunno!"

More laughing. "We'll just see, then..." Quickly, she plants her lips on yours. "I love you."

"Love you too, Millie," you respond, stammering like a schoolboy with a dumb crush.

God, this is your fault for breaching the question. Do you imagine yourself spending a long life together with her? Absolutely, yeah, but! You've already fucked things up by breaching the question without preparing, just because she mentioned others! You're awful at this! And no one who ever says 'let's do this thing together after the war' actually gets to! You've read fiction!

Seemingly none the wiser to your internal monologue of anxiety, Millie continues smiling up close to you. You wonder if her heart is racing like yours is right now. Gods, you've been seeing each other how long now? You can't be flustered like this, can you?

You reach August's Reach soon enough, immediately dedicating yourself to buying some nice rings. You delay your meeting with Sir Jovan by a solid hour by running off without telling anyone where you are, and Jack is sent to find you, fully intent on chewing you out... Until he finds out what you were doing, agreeing to cover for you.

"Yeah, I mean... You two are made for each other. Knew it since I laid eyes on you both in Alder," he says. "Marriage is a wonderful thing, my friend."

"I'm glad to hear that," you say, "I just sort of asked if she wanted to when she mentioned you and Riley, and... Well, we both want to!"

"Sometimes, that's all there is to it," Jack responds. "Anyway, all I ask is you invite me and Riley to the ceremony."

"Will do," you agree, nodding.

Led to the well-decorated meeting room of August's Reach, Fabrice and friends learn of the disappearance/presumed death of Biff and Byron. He, Dinah, and Adam seem shaken by it, but... You and Millie saw them briefly in Holmstead all of twice, so all you can offer is condolences to your friends.

Jovan, clean-shaven, sharp-jawed, the image of knightly shininess (minus massive bags beneath his eyes), speaks to the lot of you as he takes in the reports of Hal and Fabrice. Fabrice's report, he meets with little surprise. Hal's words, however, interest him. "So... The dead prince still has sons out there?"

"And, er, two daughters," Hal answers. "By now, they've found the Ice Dragon girl, and I figure Rene went to recruit the bandit close to the capital region next... But this leaves us with an opportunity of a few days to look for the son in Central, make sure he doesn't get taken in by the Empire!"

"But what about the oldest? You mentioned the pages describing her having been pilfered?"

Hal nods. "I wish I could say I thought to do that, but whoever desecrated the diary isn't me..."

"I see... Well, whoever they are, we have their bravery in such a brazen act of defiance in the Empire's heartland," Jovan responds. "That being said... Were they able to gather all of the non-first children, pool their magical might, this plan of Ximeno's might work. Or it could be completely insane, not even worth our time."

"So," Fabrice says, "our options are to have a small squad seek out and secure this young Ludwig before the Empire, or focus on destroying Director Belinda first and foremost before letting slip the straws the dead Emperor grasped at."

"Trying to counter the baseless speculation of a dead man is less pressing than defeating Director Belinda right here and now," you agree. "She still rules over a third of this continent with an iron fist, and on a more personal level, she has my father! We can't spare men in the hopes of finding one teenage boy!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm70W_vYzhY

"I couldn't agree more," Jovan says, nodding slightly. "If we're going to spend ANY time on this children nonsense, it should be in finding out who has hidden knowledge of who the eldest is. Protecting them and what they know from Lady Rene and her squad."

"Again, though, that's in the unlikely scenario they contact any of us," Fabrice says. "Even more more importantly, if you ask me, is coordinating our strength with that of General Taniel and Queen Hauteclere. We've Central cornered, and its conquest will spell the true end of the Gerxel."

Jovan nods, once more. "Tomorrow, we ride East, truly join forces with our allies."

"To think that not a year ago, the Gerxel Empire was an insurmountably terrifying threat," you muse, "and now look at them. Watch them shrink into nothingness."

"This war may have reduced the Dory family down to one, but I'll build us back up as pillars of the new world!" Adelais vows.

"Now if only someone could actually lead this place in peacetime," Jovan remarks, sighing. "The duchies are going to be at each other's throats once things return to normal with no Augustus around..."

"That's... Somewhat pessimistic," you comment. "Couldn't you at least try?"

Jovan shakes his head. "I mean... I'm a leader of soldiers, not of citizens. Augustus was a genius who had been working at this since he was 16, while I'm just... Doing what I can to keep us afloat until I can get some rest. He was a dear friend of mine, my guiding light in life... I could only get a fraction of his talent and I'm thankful for even that much."

In this moment, you feel a connection to Sir Jovan, to the decade+ of his life he's spent dedicated to his late king. How little you constantly knew what you were doing. You can't ask him to be a king, but...

"Is there nothing you can do to at least keep the duchies equal partners? Perhaps Noba doesn't need an outright king... At least, Holmstead did fine as an independent territory, so being part of a duchy with no king can't be terribly different..."

"It will be difficult to foster this peace," Jovan says, "but... Not impossible. We shall see, I suppose."

That being settled, the lot of you prepare to push East. You briefly saw and didn't interact with this Queen Hauteclere's son way back when you were running away from Holmstead, you remember, and since then you've heard ample about his exploits on the frontlines of his mother's army. It'll be an honor to meet both him and the woman herself.

Moreso than anything, though, you're just excited to see your father again.

"Live a little longer for me, won't you, father?" You address the night's sky. "I have no idea how to behave at a wedding, after all!"

I've been curious about Dyrus and Samson interacting ever since they didn't at the end of Samson's "escape the bandits" chapter.

Thanks for playing, as always. Update twitter/ask.fm are qmgrandflocto, and I'll be around in-thread to discuss any plot/lore elements you might be curious about until the melatonin I'm about to take knocks me out. Should be a solid however long is needed.

Thanks for running, Octo. Fun as always.

Always a pleasure!

I'm surprised that my pacing hasn't been completely awful, trying to keep all three stories going along at a comparable rate.

You're doing fine. Really.

Glad to hear it!

Another thing that occupies my mind a lot of the time is how Silver Scales protagonists would react to Generically's and vice-versa. All I know for sure is that Ellen and Lloyd would both really like and respect Dyrus, but for pretty much completely different parts of his personality.

Thanks for running. Really enjoyed the character interactions this thread.

Again, always a pleasure.

Samson has to be my favorite of our protagonists to write downtime and mundane interactions for. Dyrus/Rene's opposing forces/parallels/long-lost siblings plot is most of my forethought and pre-planning goes, but Samson's plot mostly just comes to me in bits and pieces.

He's also the one who "the party members have a life outside of you" comes easiest with. I'm not even terribly sure how Edwyg and Dinah ended up together, it just sort of happened like that.

That's great and all but why isn't this on /qst/?
