"Let me go!"

Unfortunately the weird lady, supposedly one of the Elders, the centuries-old witches who are the super-important bosses of all witches and who make super-important decisions even though this one sounds closer to my sister's age, does not stop pulling and pinching at my face, even as I scream and push away from her.

Instead she stumbles forward as I pull away, only then letting go to flail her arms about wildly, howling as she falls face first unto the dirt in front of me. I try my best not to break into laughter as what was just a few moments ago a looming and powerful figure is reduces to something that belongs in a cheap market comedy.

The other Elders do not seem to make any attempt whatsoever as cackling, crowing, and sniggering emerges around me.

"What a pathetic display!" One announces mockingly.

"A complete disgrace." Another grumbles loud enough for me to hear, even as the one in front of me begins sobbing into the ground.

Slowly, she pushes herself from the ground and uses the sleeve of her robe to wipe her still obscured face, leaving said sleeve with a complete mess of wet and dirt.

"If you're done shaming your line," the one next to her declares loudly, "perhaps you would like to pass along the initiate before you humiliate yourself further?"

Her attempts at a reply come out completely unintelligible however, as her wailing cuts off anything resembling words.

Her neighbor in turn, lets out a frustrated sigh and instead addresses me. "Apprentice, just carry on and spare the fool her own indignity."

I'm supposed to be tested by every Elder in the circle to complete this initiation, but I'm not sure what the test is in some lady pinching and pulling at my cheeks. And now she's just crying like a little girl. I'm not sure it's really my fault, she's the one who started and all I did was pull away so it's not my fault she fell!

>Please bear with me as I try to get back into the proper tone and everything, it's been a long time.
>>

But I kinda feel bad for her anyway, getting picked on by the others like that. I hope they're not always like this because it doesn't seem like how a wise and powerful witch should behave at all!

But what am I supposed to do? I mean I feel bad for her and kinda want to comfort her, but.. won't that just humiliate her even more in front of the others? That might not help at all, even though it seems right! And of course, there's the risk that she starts getting grabby again..

On the other hand, Mistress said I'm not allowed to move on to the next Elder until this one has given me permission. And I don't think she has yet!

I try looking to Mistress for any hint of what to do, but it turns out she's not paying attention at all, just starting into up at some stupid bird in the sky above us! Looking to Redleaf instead isn't much help either because she just gives me a shrug while looking just as confused as I am!

I guess then I'll just...

>Move on without her permission to draw the attention away from her.
>Keep waiting until she tells me what to do. She IS supposed to be the Elder here.
>Give her a hug to try to calm her down. Because it's what you should do!

I don't care! Even if the Elders think so, I say it's not okay to leave someone sad and crying like that!

"Uhm, Miss Elder?" I say, trying to catch her attention through her bawling and sniffling. For a few moments she quiets enough to -probably- hear what I'm saying.

"Please don't be so sad." I tell her, trying my best to smile without smiling so much that it looks like I'm laughing. "I'm sorry you got hurt, but you wouldn't listen even though I asked you to stop so I had to.."

"Well anyway! I know you were just trying to be nice and I don't think anything is wrong with being nice, right? You just forgot to listen so things got a little awkward, right?"

"But just because some people are being meaniepots that doesn't mean we can't still be nice and make friends," I say, spreading my arms in invitation. "Right?"

The 'Elder', who I'm becoming more and more certain isn't really one, doesn't waste any time, throwing herself at me and picking me off the ground -despite not even being much taller than me! - before I could even begin to react. "Heehee, yeah! You're so right, Robin! And super nice! I like you!"

I'm not really surprised when she starts hugging me so tight that I feel like I'm being squeezed like a lemon. "Miss.. You're.."

"Oh!" She actually responds this time, letting me back on my own feet. "Heehee, sorry! I guess I get a little caught up in it when apprentices are so gosh darn-"

"Ahem!" The Elder next to her interrupts her, audibly annoyed.

"Uhm... so anyway, Robin! You should totally come visit my tea parlor sometime! I'm sure a nice girl like you would love it!"

Tea..? This lady runs a tea parlor?

"Raven knows where it's at so just do that thing cute little apprentices do until she'll let you go, okay?"

>1/2
>>
>>47857162
Finally, Mistress rips her attention away from that bird after hearing her name mentioned, looks about in confusion for a moment, then puts on a serious look again. Though I think she's just pretending to know what's going on.

"Oh right! Heehee, you can move on, Robin! Good luck!" She blurbs so cheerfully, even though her face is hidden I can still FEEL the big smile shining at me.

After a moment, I decide I have no idea what to say in response so I just do as she says. Again again again, I return to the center of the circle, finally starting to feel a bit less uncomfortable about it. Even though I just called most of them meaniepots.. I think they know I was right. Hopefully.

I turn to the next Elder, who so far seems to be a much more serious person, though I got the sense she too was just trying to help. Just.. less gently. She speaks in a dry and neutral tone:

"My question for you is simple, initiate. Who is the person you love more than anyone else?

..Huh?

Is this really an okay question to ask? Well, I guess there's no harm in telling her, but it's just kind awkward to have to tell everybody like this. But it's obviously..

"Papa? Of course! But uh.. can I ask why this is even a test?"

"Oh no, you misunderstand, little one." She says while waving dismissively at me. "This is just a formality. Every initiate is asked this question."

"But.. Why?"

She waits a moment before answering, almost as if she was trying to do a dramatic pause even though she's not in a drama. Maybe this one is an actor? Really weird bunch of people, these!

"In case you ever try to betray your sisters, of course."

"Huh? What would knowing THAT help?"

Somehow, despite none of them talking, all the Elders seem to become even MORE silent all of a sudden, then, after a few moments of that all turning their heads to look at Mistress who only shrugs awkwardly, which is nice because they're not staring at me anymore but I feel a little left out, as if I'm missing something that's obvious to everyone else.

A few moments of that later they all go back to staring at me again though and the Elder tells me to carry on. And then the next says the same, and the next, until I arrive at the last one in the circle, standing just next to Redleaf who, almost-subtly, winks her eye at me in encouragement.

The last one does not speak, only beckons me to step closer with a wave of her hand. I do so, cautiously as I still remember the trap one of the others set. This time there doesn't seem to be one though. As I approach the Elder, who continues the silent treatment, she reaches out her hand, holding in it a small toad.

"You.. want me to take this? Uh, okay."

Toads are kinda icky but, they don't really scare me. I know that's strange though because people usually expect me to be scared of them because apparently most girls are. But I'm not, and Amalia isn't, and I don't think Sis is either, so I think that's stupid.

Next, she reaches out her other hand holding a-

No no no, that's just not right at all! The poor little toad is completely helpless and hasn't hurt anyone! It doesn't deserve to die for no reason at all! But... she never did say that was what she wanted me to do. And if she won't say, then how am I supposed to KNOW what she wants?

"No thanks," I tell her with a friendly smile. "I don't need that."

Knives are ICKY! I don't want to even touch one!

"Thanks for the toad, though! He seems very nice!"

She doesn't respond.

"Did you want anything else, Miss Elder?"

She doesn't respond.

"I guess not, then? Alright, I'll just go back to my spot then!

"Hold." She commands before I can take even one step. "You know exactly what I was telling you to do, your face and voice revealed that plainly, even though I said nothing."

Uh oh, there goes my defense.

"And yet you choose to argue semantics to avoid doing as you are told. Why is that, initiate?"

"Well uhm, I just don't think it's right. Especially when you won't say anything! I mean what reason do you have to want me to kill the toad? If you don't have a very good one, then it isn't right!"

She huffs dismissively, not convinced by my argument. "And if I ORDER you to kill the toad?"

Order... Is she allowed to give me orders at all? She's old, and powerful, but she's not Papa or Mistress. And she's telling me to do something VERY bad, so I'm pretty sure it's more important to do what's right than what she says!

"... I still won't do it. It's not right, and what's right comes before anything you say."

For several long moments again everything seems to become even more silent than silence. Finally, after several drops of sweat has started trickling down my forehead, she speaks again:

"Good. Remember that choice, little witch. A true witch is nobody's slave and does not allow others to turn against her own heart. Be they emperors, teachers, friends, or even your Papa, you must never betray what you believe in for their sake."

"But what if I believe in-"

"We are done here." She declares before I can finish and, in the same instant, all the Elders turn about and walk off in each direction.

"Wait! I still-"

"Leave it." Redleaf tells me calmly, then suddenly shifts into a cheerful expression instead. "Good job, Nadja! I think that went pretty well!"

It's still a little strange how she just completely shifts gears like that.

"Uh, you think so? Some of them didn't seem very happy..."

"And they never will be! Haha, but that's no reason for us not to be, right?"

Uncertain how to respond to her attitude, I look back to Mistress for help, only to find her gone as well.

"Huh? Where did Mistress go?" I ask, sounding a little more nervous than I would have liked.

"Oh, didn't you notice? She left early. Not sure what she had to do but it must have been urgent. She's allowed to do that in emergencies, don't worry."

"Oh... But uhm, if she left, how do I get home?"

"Well..." Redleaf replies, a truly unnerving grin forming on her face. "You're welcome to spend the night here! I have an extra bed in case Cinnamon has to stay late but, hahah, she won't be needing it tonight!"

But... won't Papa be worried if I don't come home?

"Otherwise, you'll just have to climb the mountain all the way down. It's a few hour back to Hinde, but you're officially a witch now so that shouldn't scare you!"

- Intermission - Amalia pt 1

"Amalia? Is almost noon.."

Slowly, Gil's muffled voice stirs reality back into shape, forcing the blend of contrasting colors to assemble themselves back into the familiar shapes and patterns of the waking world. Bed, walls, window, that creepy-weird aquarelle Gil refuses to let me throw away because apparently "I poured my soul into it."

Guess that means my soul's an ugly sack of sh-

"Amalia?" Gil's voice calls once more from outside the door, accompanied by two soft knocks. "Are you wake?"

"Awake." I correct him. Six years of living in this hamlet and he's still struggling with the language.

"Sorry.." He replies weakly. Scared, even? I DID probably get kind of, well, harsh, yesterday. I mean I didn't mean to, I just..

"I uh, leave to work soon. Okay?"

That's great, Amalia. Even your guardian is afraid of you now. Really well done, you insufferable, pathetic little b-

"I see you tonight, Amalia." He calls, his voice accompanied by his increasingly distant footsteps, soft and ever-cautious.

I should probably say something. Something that won't make everything even worse like always. So just quickly think of something, something that's nice, or loving, or... something! Anything at all will do, just do it now!

The high pitched creak from the front door hinges ring through the house, signalling the very last chance.

"WAIT!" I scream as loudly as I can, jump out of bed and dart into the living room only to remember, as I find a dumbstruck Gil staring back at me, that I still haven't figured out what to say.

"I uh.. that is.. uhm.." I seriously have no idea how to do this stuff, all this emotions and talking crap. I'm not like HER. She'd just put on some goofy smile, say something horribly embarrassing like it was nothing, and somehow make everything seem right just like that. But this is me, and I..

Great opening, now say SOMETHING so you can get out of here.

"Uhm..."

"Uh..."

"SORRY FOR PUTTING UP WITH ME!"

Nicely done. Idiot.

"I MEAN UH.."

"THANKS FOR CALLING YOU STUFF!"

"NO I MEAN UHH"

"I UH... AAAAGH!"

All of a sudden, somewhere inbetween when I was punching myself and when I was closing my eyes hoping he'd just disappear right now, he decided to drop his bag and pull me close.

"WHA- STOP I DON'T-"

"Don't worry. I AAAAGH you too, Fluffy." He says in a tone that leaves no question about the shit-eating grin that's no doubt covering his dumb face right now.

"THAT'S NOT WHAT I MEANT, STUPID! AND I TOLD YOU NOT TO CALL ME THAT NAME AGAIN! EVER!"

He lets go and swiftly turns his back before I have a chance to flip him off to his face, then swings the door open before replying: "Sorry Fluffy, I forget you don't like name now."

"GO AWAY!" I shout, slamming the door behind him.

Stupid jerk, why does he have to go and say that stuff when I'm trying my best to be nice? Stupid, stupid, stupid JERK!

Okay. Deep breath, Amalia. Remember, the jerk is still better than... Than THEM. Well, anything is better than THEM, but he's what you got, so if this is all you have to put up with you're still damned lucky to be away from that place.

"HEEEY!"

The all too familiar screech calls as the door swings open, revealing the always-uninvited Hero of Linde, Slayer of both Monster and Privacy, Alina.

"Huh? What's with the grim look today, Fluffy?"

Oh moons, of all the people who could overhear that it just had to be...

"Eheh, I really like that name. How comes you never told us about-"

"Because I HATE it! So stop calling me that, alright?"

"Oh sure!" She says with a grin that tells only too clearly of the insincerity behind it. "Sure sure sure!"

"Anyway," I continue hiding my annoyance as best I can. "I haven't talked to Nadja if that's why you're here."

"Haha! Not to worry, Ami!" She erupts, raising her voice enough to cause her words to resonate in my head. "I already did and she said yes!"

"Oh?" I had asked Alina to teach me to use a sword, but she said she'd only do it if Nadja trained with us too, for some reason as mystifying as anything else she decides to do. Of course it kind of misses, seeing as the only reason I wanted to learn in the first place was...

"So yeah we can begin today! Naddie's out today, but don't worry, I promised I'd train you even when she's too busy and that's what I'll do!

She’d steal fun from the last few who still have it and disperse a small part of it among random people?
>>
>>47860806
Yes.
>>
>>47860718
She sees a fun challenge. Fighting monsters is all well and good, but liberating an entire country? That's gotta be worth some points!
>>
>>47860855
She's a real go-getter huh.
>>
Hell, it's not like I expected this to be easy, and nothing good comes from whining anyway.

"Okay, let me just grab breakfast first, then." I tell her, causing her face to immediately light up.

"Great! I'll wait for you just outside town so see you then! This is going to be so great"

"Wait wha- why outsi-" She's gone.

I sigh to myself, wondering what madness has filled her head this time. I guess this is also one those things you just have to put up with. Either that, or no training at all.

Breakfast turns out to be a fairly trivial matter as Gil has left out a couple slices of still fairly fresh bread along with a glass of jam. Guess he wasn't in THAT much of a hurry, huh? Either way, no sense letting her wait needlessly when I can just bring these along and eat them on the way there, right?

I've already chomped down the first by the time I reach the edge of town, mindful to completely disregard the usual warning from the on-duty guard about the most recent monster sightings. But I don't see Alina. How does she expect me to find her if she's headed into the actual woods without giving me a direction?

Guess there's nothing to do but start looking. At least I'll have the time to finish the rest of my break-

Ow! Did I just get stung?

And why is everything... going black?

Oh, not this again...

END OF INTERMISSION - AMALIA PT 1

"Uhm, I appreciate the offer, but I really should get home or everyone will get worried about me."

"Oh." Yet again, REdleaf seems to instantly change her state completely, this time from cheerful and deep into sad territory. "I didn't think of that. I suppose that's true..."

"Oh!" And she's back again. "I have an idea!" She yells, then rushes off towards her house. Am I... supposed to follow? I suppose I might as well, seeing how everyone disappeared while I wasn't looking. Even Mistress!

Finding the door to her house wide open I, cautiously, take a peek inside before actually stepping in. After all, I don't want to accidentally offend the witch that turns her apprentice into a frog just for being late!

Inside, I find Redleaf scurrying about the place searching the many, many shelves of strange objects inside - I think she may have even more than Mistress! - for something, while in an open space just inside I see the cage with her frogified apprentice placed in the center of yet another magical circle. Though unlike the others I've encountered lately, this one is drawn with some yellowish substance.

A moment later, Redleaf lets out a celebratory "Aha!" as she pulls a bottle of red dust from a shelf.

"Oh? Nadja, come watch this! I had the greatest idea! Since you're going down, I'll have Cinnamon show you the way! She goes up and down every day so she could probably do it in her sleep! Great, huh?"

I thought she was being punished but... I'm not going to object, since I could definitely use the help, and I didn't think that punishment was fair to begin with!

Hahaha, poor Amalia.

"Okay, now watch! I already prepared the circle, so all that's need is triggering the effect with the right offering!" She violently forces the lid from the bottle, sticks her hand inside and pulls out a good fistful of the... thingy, then sprays it over the circle, not seeming to mind that half of it lands well outside the circle.

"Wait, if this turns her back, shouldn't you let her out of the-"

"OWWWWW!" A new voice screams as the circle explodes into a great flash of light and, well, pieces of what is probably not a very good cage anymore!

"Heeh... Oops? Anyway, you heard me just fine! Go on, help Nadja get back down safely and then you can go home for the day! Have fun you two!" She commands with renewed cheer as she pushes both her apprentice and myself out of her house, slamming the door behind us.

I guess... that's goodbye?

Thanks for running!
Nadja didn't draw the short straw when it comes to her Mistress, huh.
>>

Redleaf seems... unhinged.

Hope you enjoyed this first thread in a very, very long time! I'm super happy to see people will still play after so long!

Since Summer has officially arrived, I expect to be doing this more often that I used to, so I'll probably make the next thread sometime next week. Though probably in the weekend as usual.

As always, question answering is a thing until I pass out completely, and if you have none I'll see you next time!
>>
>>47861480
But, does Nadja still have the frog?

>>47861570
Thanks for writing, Friend.

Since Nadja hasn't actually had a chance to look at her yet, I haven't described her in text yet. I did post the artwork I'm associating with her during her short story a few threads back (which happens to be a months ago, so...) and accidentally used it earlier in this thread too. So you can see that piece right here!

>>47861599
Of course! It sounded like some players wanted to keep him (or her? Nadja doesn't actually know how to tell the difference!) so of course she's still holding on to the TOAD!

Can call it Croaky.

I stand by Stubby.

Well, that's one way to cause regular Soulstorm flashbacks.
