“I know,” you mutter. “But look at them.” You and Stack look to see the GWMA girl still standing in disciplined formation, with their officers checking each and every girl for anything slightly out of place. “The scouting report said they were supposed to be impetuous.”

Stack smirks. “Also said they was disciplined.” She punches you on the arm, making you flinch. “Come on, you ain’t scared of a bunch of tryhards, are ya?”

Let’s go introduce ourselves.”

“Wait-“ you hold your hand up as Stack starts dragging you over. “Wait! It’s meeting between Commanders, and-“ Before you know it, Griselda and Carolina Greene are looking at you. “… Hey!” You smile, holding your hands together in front of you. “My name is Elodie.”

Griselda grins, motioning to you for Carolina. “Carolina. This is one of my Officers, a real natural in the commander’s seat. Her name’s Elodie R. Zumwalt.”

“’Ey!” Carolina shakes your hand vigorously. You noticed that her helmet is stacked upon with leaves and camouflage, her cheeks are packed with freckles, her green eyes regard you very carefully, but at the same time she looks absolutely fucking insane. “Everyone calls me the Swamp Fox.” She points to an M24 Chaffee in the back with the other GWMA tanks. It’s painted a navy blue, with white stripes along the turret, with white blue chevrons inside the stripes. “That there is my noble steed, Bucephalus!”

“I always did like the Chaffee,” says Griselda.

You nod. “Thank you.”

Carolina stands on her tiptoes. “Say, where’s the uh…” You and Griselda tilt your heads. “Where’s the commander of your big Brit tank? The really big one. I really wanted to meet her.” She gently pushes past you, looking around to find Iris.

Griselda smiles a bit. “Er, Iris is busy convening with her crew, sorry.”

“Hmph.” Carolina harumphs. “Well, tell her that she makes good use of a Brit horse.” She points to you. “You too.” She smirks. “I already put in my preliminary votes for the All-Star match, you might be on there.”

However, we get to ride horses! And not just the brave steel horses we take into Senshadou but real actual horses!” She points to a couple of horses in a prefabricated stable. “All those horses are mine, the Saddlebred is my commuter horse, her name is Lily of the Valley. The Standardbred is my pleasure ride and her name is Daisy, and that feisty little girl the Kiger Mustang her name is Edelweiss.”

“Wow.” You blink. “You own three horses?”

“Well, I own ten. The rest are back home.” says Carolina. “Why, don’t you?” She seems genuinely clueless to the fact that normal people don’t own horses.

Our heavies, the IS-2, the Pershing, and the Churchill will be in the center in the town. And the rest will be to the south.”

You nod. “With how dry and hot it is today, there’s going to be a lot of dust today. We might get tricked if they notice that.”

“I know, I don’t want to commit too hard to one area though,” says Griselda. “However, splitting up against a team with fast tanks like GWMA is risky, even if they’re not exactly the best team. We’re not Black Forest Peak that’s for sure, they’ll pick us apart if they keep us separated.”

Iris pipes up. “Perhaps we will cross that bridge when we get to it.”

“Right,” says Griselda. “Ellie, which end do you want to defend in? I can take the other end.”

“Right, first battle as an Officer I think,” says Iris. “Hopefully it goes well.”

“You should be fine, Iris, you got a pretty simple assignment.”

“A lady makes the simple look incredible,” says Iris. She plants her hand on her chest, smiling at you. “Good luck to you in the match. Hopefully I don’t end up the last gal standing again.” You shrug. You wouldn’t want to be in that position either. “Tata.”

Right, time to- “Hey, hey, solnyshka!” Wait… That’s not Oleg. You look over to see-

You blink. Oryola Kuznetsov. She sits in the now modified driver’s seat, grinning as her eyes barely crest over the lip of the hatch. You walk over while Josephina stares at her, confused. “O-… Oryola. Wh- sh- shouldn’t you be with your team? You have a match set this weekend too!”

She waves you off. “Off-day. My subcommander assures me she can win day, da? I go back for flag match, but I wanted to see how this went, da?” Oh, oh! “I see you modified seat for freakishly large driver! Josephina pulls out a rag to wipe off the mark she left, but you quickly stop her. “Don’t.”

Isolated from most forms of help if they attack. That’s pretty worrying. “Hey!” Ingrid calls over the radio. “Josephina, how’s the seat?”

“Well, it’s not really a seat anymore,” says Josephina. “Oleg removed most of it.”

“Oh, that can’t be comfortable,” says Winona.

“It’s actually incredibly comfortable now that I can somewhat move my legs how I want them,” says Ingrid. Good girl, Josephina.

“This is Iris, we’re already seeing dust to the far northeast where GWMA is supposed to start.” You pull up your binoculars and spy out in that direction. A huge smoke cloud, grey and brown, is rising up. Yep, they’re on the move. But you can’t tell how many are moving in which direction. It seems like the big dust cloud is actually getting bigger and moving in all directions!

“Keep to the plan,” says Griselda. “Elodie, keep sharp. Recall Serafina to your position if necessary.”

Serafina gasps. “Is it time!? Can we join you, commander!?”

You keep peering out at the immense dust clouds approaching your location. Hm, it seems to you that they’re using it for cover definitely. Question is, how many tanks are there in that cloud? Are all of them in one flank? Are the rocket tanks holding back? Are they equally distributed?

Ugh, this is gonna bother you.

“This is Griselda. We’re reaching our rally point. Do any of you see any tanks?”

You continue scanning, then spot a Chaffee or two through the dust cloud in the northmost cloud. It’s not Carolina’s. But… “I see one, a Chaffee coming from the north. I can’t tell if it’s alone or not though, and it’s way out of my range.”

“Hold fire. Let them come to us.” Ingrid and Stack turn out, looking out at the dust. Griselda issues another command. “Iris, establish defensive positions in the town, but don’t dig in too deep. They might try to flush you out with the rockets.”

“Affirmative,” says Iris.

We have a couple ways to do this. Number 1 we withdraw southern flank. They may not simply have the speed to get to position before it gets taken.

Number 2 we wait until we see the whites of their eyes, so to speak. They're obviously an old fashioned MA, we wait in formation in the town until we've got them nice and close and blast them.

Stuka rockets on the Panzer 35H are ridiculously innaccurate and actually have a pretty short effective range, not to mention only four rockets per tank. I think they'll save them for the heavies most likely, where we're bunched up.

“Griselda,” you call. “Trouble. I have 15 tanks total coming to attack the north. I see the M24 Chaffees, the Panzer IIs, and the rocket H35s. They’re all coming down from then north. We’re still out of range.”

“Roger, we’re gonna-“ There’s a loud bang on her end. “Ah hell! It’s the BT-7s! Don’t engage them if you can help it, there’s way too many for you to fight!”

Alright, alright. You take another look. The Chaffees are leading the charge in a flying V, with the Panzer IIs in behind them in a line, and the H35s further behind. They’re still out of range, but it could be minutes before they get into firing distance.

You, Stack, and Ingrid hurry to get as much leaves and branches thrown onto the net as possible for maximum coverage. After a few minutes, the deed is done, and you hurry back in.

Only one turned out is you. You peer through your binoculars again, and find GWMA turning off towards the north end of Port William town. “Iris, do you see them?” you ask.

“Yes, I do,” she says. “I’m shifting the IS-2 and the Pershing north to deal with them. Griselda, how are you doing?” Loud cannonfire bursts off in the distance.

“Not good, we’re engaged with five BT-7s and they’re a bitch to put down!” she yells. “Earnhardt, watch it, your armor is too thin, stay behind me!”

“We can’t help Griselda now, we have to take out as many of these goons as we can,” says Iris.

“We’re going to let them pass us,” you say. “Once they engage you, Iris, we’ll move in.” You take another look and see the H35s trailing off with a pair of Panzer IIs to defend them. Seems like they’re moving in to get a good barrage off on the town. “Stack.” She turns out, and you hand her the binoculars. “What do you make of those rockets?”

The loud bangs shatter ceilings and buildings, setting the streets aflame with fires. “Keep steady,” says Iris. “Unless you’re on fire, you’re fine.”

“None so far, but I imagine a second barrage might work against us,” says Iris.

“Full stop!” You stop up, then turn around to face Carolina, now bursting out of the smoke. She fires a shot at you, this time it pings right off the turret side. The hull creaks and groans from the impact.

“Aagh!” Winona bangs her head against the sights. “I’m okay, I’m okay!”

“Fire!” The first shot misses the Chaffee by a hair, shredding off some paint work. Carolina powerslides around, trying again for the Nishizumi Hook. This time you’re prepared. You simply back away, and let her undershoot. She builds up speed again and spins around, trying to get an angle on you.

“Alright, I-“ Your turret is suddenly pelted by 20mm shells. They ping and shatter off the thick turret armor, but it’s enough to make you turn in. “Shit!” The tank shakes and creaks underneath the weight of 20s from the two Panzer IIs.

Carolina pursues you cross the flat grounds of Ohio state. She certainly sees the two tanks coming to reinforce you. And by that, she breaks left, fires off a WP shell at the Panzer III. “AAAHH! WE’RE BLIND! THE RUSSIAN WINTER DOESN’T PROTECT AGAINST WILLY PETE!” yells Suvorov. The Panzer III drives around, out of control and with WP smoke across its sights.

Griselda is turned out of her Sherman, firing off her M2 Browning and her main 75mm gun at Carolina. The Browning manages a few blows, but the 75mm misses overhead. You speed past Griselda now too. “Get her, get her!” yells Griselda. Suddenly, Carolina pulls right, then brakes to a stop. You speed past, your turret traverse not fast enough to track it. “What the-“

Carolina plants one right into Griselda’s engine back.

“I CAN’T SEE!” yells Suvorov as she drives out of control, right into the side of Griselda’s Sherman. “AH! CHYORT!” The impact snaps the drive wheel right off and judging by the smoke coming from the engine, knocks the engine right out of its mounting.

Oliver takes you all the way back to the north of town, where you quickly hose down all the rockets left in their wooden frames. They burst into flames immediately, now useless to the H35s if they want to come back and claim them. You find a good place by the road, and see Iris being pursued by eleven tanks total, leading them is the Chaffee. “Winona, do you have a shot?”

Winona sweats a bit, grinding her teeth as she aims past Iris. “Eh… there it is!”

“Fire!”

Your 57mm flies past Iris and slams into the Chaffee, sending it spinning onto its side.

“Let’s get ‘em.” You bang your fist into your palm, then say, “Fire at will!” Your guns start raking across the light tanks. The first to go is an H35, which flips end over end through sheer impact.

I agree, she's a coiled spring that releases way to early to be effective. I think we just have to speak with her first, as her superior officer to talk about this. If that doesn't work, we bring in Iris as backup.

What was once a relatively even fight has now turned into a complete massacre. The remaining light tanks continue to try and shell and break your armor. Worryingly, a few of the 37mm shells from those 35Hs do make the engine rumble and grind a bit as you take some hits, but sure enough…

“Hip hip, hooray!” Iris is thrown upwards by all of the crews. Sure, almost everyone got eliminated. You and everyone else were more concerned that she earned her 20th kill today. She looks bewildered, trying not to spill her tea as she’s thrown up joyfully. “Hip hip, hooray! Hip hip, hooray!”

She’s finally let down, blinking in surprise. Griselda hugs her. “Ah, I’m so proud of you, Iris! And you too, Ellie! You two saved the match for us! That went a lot more poorly than I thought it would.”

You shrug. “Well, I got lucky. They’d definitely wouldn’t have beaten Iris.”

Iris twirls her finger through her hair, obviously embarrassed at the attention. “Please, you needn’t be so modest.”

Coming to meet you however are the sound of horses trotting towards you. The dirtied and haggard looking members of George Washington Military Academy meet with you on horseback. Carolina however smiles. “That was a great match! Worthy of the history books! Had I deployed my Hellcats this match, I maybe would’ve had you and those British steeds of yours.”

“Good match,” says Griselda. “Looking forward to the Flag Match tomorrow.”

“Same!” says Carolina. “But as is tradition in our school, the loser of a match must give up one of their horses.” She dismounts her horse, then motions for one of her riders. The rider leads on a cream colored big horse with large hooves. Um. Is she- “This is Lang, he’s an American Cream Draft, very good for hauling around ammo around the hangars these draft horses when you don’t have cars or trucks.” Um. “He’s all yours, he actually loves having a rider so he comes with a saddle as well.”

Uh. You and Griselda look at each other.

I think it's incredibly likely, yes. I mean, it does help that we are a incredibly short staffed team in terms of numbers and overall talent at this point, so it could even out as we get more people and our teams get better.

“Doesn’t she take care of a horse?” asks Griselda.

“-A- horse,” says Serafina. “But I say we take the horse and make it our mascot!”

“A horse could do so much rescue work around the pool!” says Regina.

“A horse would be a lovely addition to our roster!” says Suvorov.

You look at Griselda. “What do you think?”

“I think we have to accept.” You grumble a little. Griselda sighs. “Look at her.” You all look over at Carolina, who happily holds Lang’s reins, waiting for your answer. She pats Lang on the side of the head, smiling at him as well. “We can’t just turn that away!”

You groan. Ugh, horses! What are you even going to do with a horse!? “Ugh, okay, we take the horse. But tell her to build a stable and some facilities for it!”

“Deal,” says Griselda. All of you turn to her. “We’ll take him, thank you, Carolina. But we aren’t exactly equipped to handle a horse of such stature so-”

“Yeah,” you say.

“Hm…” Griselda folds her arms, smirking a bit. “Wanna know something cool?” You blink. “Iris is the first US-based freshman to score 25 kills this year. I checked in with Kit, she’s projecting Iris to finish the year with 50 plus kills at minimum.” Oh, wow. That’s- that’s crazy. She sighs, leaning on the table. “She’s great to have, lucky to have her.”

“Mhm. Those light tanks would’ve eventually picked me apart but without her-“

“Yeah, that’s another thing,” says Griselda. “We just learned how GWMA works. If that match had been any shorter or if we didn’t have Iris, we would’ve lost I think. That’s no offense to you or anything.” You shrug. None taken honestly. You don’t know how you could’ve taken on 11 tanks by yourself. “They mean to take us out early in the match, we just gotta play the Kursk game and be patient, try and let them come to us. Let things play out, right?”

“Right.” You lean back. She smiles at you happily, wearing on her blouse and miniskirt. “So we’re set for tomorrow then.”

“Well, what are you waiting for?” she asks. You blink. “Don’t worry about me, I got some digging to do. Kursk GB officials have been the talk of the town in NATO about wanting a tank or two be allowed by the Post-War variant clause. I wanna see what they’re up to, especially since they’ve been getting a lot of draws this season.”

How, to my knowledge the 37mm only penetrates up to 12mm at close range and the 20mm up to 24mm

with the Applique armor we are practically immune to light tank fire.

We ask that you please rise and remove your caps.” You and Griselda sneak in next to your crew. Winona, Stack, Ingrid, and Josephina all smile at you happily. The GWMA choir, a small group of girls, stand around a mic wearing their best dress uniforms underneath a flowing American flag. Thousands of people are on picnic, holding their hands over their heart, looking to the flag. And thus they sang.

You all applaud, then look up to the skies as great shining fireworks began lighting up the night. All of your faces glowed blue, red, white, yellow, all manner of colors underneath the explosions and sparkles. Winona nudges you, grinning. “Ever have a 4th of July like this!?”

“Well…” … you better not mention that time Dad bought those bootleg Vietnamese fireworks. “Nope.” Yeah, definitely not.

Griselda leans her head on your shoulder. “Gotta say, I’m glad you convinced me. I always do like a fireworks show.” Aaauuggh, get off my shoulder.

Ingrid folds her arms. “You don’t get fireworks like these at D.C. that’s for sure.” Another big explosion, this time forming a great big white star across the sky, with a blue starburst behind it.

You smile a bit, looking around at everyone enjoying themselves. You must admit to yourself, you always did look forward to the 4th of July. It was always that one time of year that your parents got you to go out, have fun, watch the fireworks.

Yeah, this is fun.

That's it for tonight's LGA. Unfortunately, I don't think I can run tomorrow due to a family thing, however I will see about Sunday if its available.
