What is the best U.S. state for Urban Fantasy?
>>

This.

Or on the flip side, Detroit. There are entire city blocks that are abandoned, perfect for LARP.
>>
The ones with the biggest cities: New York, California, Chicago, and Texas

Nebraska, obviously.
Montana right behind it.
>>
I wouldn't say that any one state is best, just because everyone has great local myths, but as far as cities, New Orleans is always a good option.
Voodoo!
Rougarou!
Cthulhu cultists!
On top of that, the crime rate makes it great for random encounters!

Utah, SLC.

Good metropolitan area while still having plenty of wilderness and plains. There's an entire region of the state known as the "Iron Range" and there is a sports team named the Vikings.

But if you really want one, take West Virginia. The Mothman is the best cryptid

Depends on what you wanna work with.

But for my tastes:
Florida is great for all the folklore and a variety of locations from urban cities to open spaces and the ocean.
Just think, you could hop from the Everglades fighting hillbillies and swamp monsters, to the Cities where a local voodoo shaman is blackmailing the local senator,to Disney World where the mascot costmes have been inhabited by spirits of dead children and to Beachfront communities where fish peopleare dragging the tourists to their doom.
>>
>>47677551
Louisiana
>>
>>47677551
Washington.

Wide swathes of forest, beaches, mountains, deserts, all within an hour from a major city.
>>
>>47677551
Florida. It's already full of random encounters.
>>
>>47677551

Rhode Island.

Lots of variety as far as locale goes, a big city, suburbs, small towns, beachside towns, dense forests, swamps, mansions, historical sites, alleged haunted locations, etc.

And the best part is that it's all within like 20 to 40 minutes drive of eachother with makes traveling around/location hopping quite doable.

Plus there's some decent potential to include some Lovecraftian stuff given how it was his old stomping ground, which is cool.

Pic semirelated, one of several old abandoned military forts that would make a cool location. Especially the underground tunnels, which you're TECHNICALLY not supposed to go in but people do anyway.

You have Chicago, with the gangsters, mobsters, corrupt politicians and cops, the old meatpacking industry and railyards, plus a shitload of haunted houses and factories, an hour away from Native burial mounds, farm country, deep woods, and small town America to have creepy things happen.
>>
>>47677551
Texas, specifically Houston area. Whole place is below sea level/built on a swamp, you have scary animal hitchhikers from the imports coming up from central and south America, there's plenty of scary native wildlife, plenty of travel options if you want the game to move around, and a large amount of medical and aerospace engineering around the area.

Being able to call Florida by its proper name of Sssshthss after The Invasion is a common test in foreign courts to tell if any given person is a Floridian spy. All citizens outside of its ruling council are magically compelled to correct Sssshthss to Florida, ostensibly as a trap to cover up their takeover of the territory. They are relatively new to societies, however, and have not yet caught on how to correct this particular bit of failed guile.

There are no lands north of the Pine Union. THERE ARE NO LANDS NORTH OF THE PINE UNION.

Fairyland, who claims earnestly to be named after fey discovered there and not after anything else at all, is regularly invaded and pillaged by the Greater Hawaiians. Of course, because this is officially done by outlaws and pirates that just so happen to sail back to Greater Hawaiian lands afterward, it has not sparked open war but has created a large amount of regional friction between diplomats along the pacific. The pirates avoid Olympus so as to not antagonize any nearby moose, but Greater Regon has so many Hawaiian raiders on their beaches (not that they care) that several coastal communities are Hawaiian in all but name.

Do not enter The Waste. Children near the borders don't even need to be told why. They know better.

Oming and South Oming are bitter enemies. They both claim that the other is a false Oming, but neither has the military power to back it up.

Oming is a relatively desolate place with little population, minimal economic importance and beset on all sides by stronger powers, but its unimportance keeps it from being invaded.

South Oming is an idyllic land with plentiful wheat crops and peaceful folk. It's said that the only reason they thrive is due to the large tribute they send every year into the Wastes. Nobody is sure what they send, but South Omingintes insist there isn't one.

When the Canadians were pushed out of what was once Canada thanks to the awakening of the psychic powers of the moose hivemind, they spent almost two generations as a mass of refugees, diaspora across the northern nations. When they were granted land following a multinational push into moose and unclaimed territory, it had less to do with generosity and more to do with minimizing the cultural effects of these "maplebloods" in so much space.

The youngest generation of Canadians remember both being on the road and having a new nation of their own. This has made Canadian teens unapologetic with both their patriotism and their mischief. There is a fad among the demographic for sprawling street art with jingoistic flavor, and it does not tend to stop on Canadian land borders.

The Republic of Texas is a very militant place, and only half by habit. It is surrounded on all sides by highly dangerous lands that bottle is movement and encourage insular politics. Even the Gulf, once a place filled with wealth for the taking, has been warped by the Impact. And no one has more of their land touching and trapped in the impact zone.

In Texas, the word of the day, every day, is "fucky." As in, the weather's fucky. He's been acting fucky lately. The land here's going through a fucky spell. And along the south, them ants are all fucky. No other weird correctly expresses the kind of shrugging concern required, the lack of understanding, but also the long-suffering acceptance. Texas is truly fucky.

From a young age, children are taught blade skills and shooting. True survival skills are for adults to bother with, Just In Case, as there is no true collapse of civilization, but with the way things go it hardly hurts for every citizen possible to defend themselves. It's impossible to tell when the situation will change for the dangerous. True, children are rarely responsible users of weapons, and the Republic has more than its share of associated tragedy, but most of the expected ills are symptoms of a pre-Impact society that can no longer exist.

Old faiths have not survived the new world. While many of the ceremonial trappings have persisted like prayer buildings, hymnals, candles and patrons, the premier God is no living father of forgiveness but a cruel God of trials. It is a God you taught in song, defeat in valor, and hide from during storms. Shamans of the Gale are one part seer and two parts betrayer, and the common folk malign then plenty when the windy season begins and tornados once more rampage.

Yet, this faith is one of its biggest exports. It is eclipsed only by lumber and mercenaries.

What the actual fuck, that's something so far removed from Texas it'd only work if all other nearby sources were removed, which your scenario fails to state.

Your second part's fine enough, though you fail to acknowledge the divide between the rural and urban communities' outlooks. Again with the lumber, it's just tacked on and completely unnecessary.

>>47686824

>stronger cultural unity
Not in the slightest.

>a better economy
Only because New Orleans is taxed out the fucking ass. No one would know it, but it's the second most important port in the whole damn country. Without a federal government to take the money, New Orleans could easily stand on it's own. As long as that damn endemic corruption keeps it's head down.
>more people
I'll give you this one.
>more access to military gear
That's debateable, some of the largest munitions plants are in north Louisiana and Barksdale AFB (the location of the USAF bombing wings) is right next to Shreveport.
>easy access to you
Half the state is a goddamn swamp, nobody has easy access to anything.
>>
>>47686824
>Texas is 200% about religion
Depends on the part of Texas. In my experience, people in Texas tend to follow a "if your not bugging me, its not my business" type of attitude towards religion and similar. Essentially people here just avoid getting into each other's personal and private affairs so long as they don't bring too much attention to it.
Texans tend to really respect things when put in terms of private property and business
>>
>>47686890
Texas also has a good amount of taxing to it, plus in many instances its used as a donir state to take money from to give to poorer states, especially in regards to specialty funding like Pittman-Robertson dollars
>>
>>47686890
>not in the slightest
Yes, by half. You do not understand how indoctrinating it is growing up in Texas. You are always Texan first. Even immigrants are Texan as fuck. Texan history is emphasized in schools, Texan pledges are common, Texan flags always within eyesight. You can't live in Texas without being capital-T Texan. No other state is as nationalistic and unified. None. It doesn't even come close. Just like the old joke goes,
>how do you tell a Texan?
>you won't have to, he'll tell you.

>>47686887
You ignorant fuck, lumber is RIGHT NOW a huge part of the Texan economy. There's so much cedar and pine here it's a legitimate nuisance. Just last year half a billion of the economy was just lumber. Shove off, you pretender. You don't know a single fucking thing about the Lone Star State. And don't you dare try to bring lexicon into this, you should know full well there's a host of dialects in the state and a complete redrawing of the map would just create more gaps for words to spread and dominate.

>>47686943

New York's pretty good, lot of old buildings and landmarks, and there's the subway system that holds a lot of mystery. I don't think the culture is quite the same recently though as it was in the 80s and before, everything feels very distilled and tasteless compared to the old days.

Detroit might be great if you wanted a once-great city turned into a decrepit warzone. Barbarian hordes ravaging the city with tons of run down fancy high society buildings and factories. Every once in a while, your players could discover an undestroyed part that still glistens like the 50s, complete with mementos and artifacts of a better time.

Houston's the polar opposite of New York, it's spread out like crazy, most the buildings are more modern, and there's a lot of function over form in the place. I can't really recommend it as a setting unless you want something dry and serious, though the city is very pretty in its own way and the people can be pretty interesting. If you do Texas as your setting, try El Paso/Juarez, lot of high running tensions and a modern western feel.

New Orleans is a pretty cool place too, lots of French-Catholic influence coupled with southern atmosphere.

In ol' Louisiana they were called Rou-Garou, they said they followed the Cajun folks from the Empire back in the days before the Emperor of Antlers took the North.

After the impact though, well, the Lougaru started expanding their range. Every so often you'd find reports of wolves the size of horses, man-eaters with a knack for outwitting a panicking person, and damned clever at avoiding traps.

They say that when the moose took over the lougaru had to find a better source of meat, unfortunately for us they still have a taste for people.

TSW cosmologies. Everything's fucky, but Texas? Texas is its special own brand of fucky, not even the Dragons can get their fingers into it.

Because the Illuminati control it with an iron fist.

You a damn fool son! Everybody know the Rougarou is the servant of a witch! A demon called up outta hell and trapped in a shadow. Sent to lay hexes on the witch's victims, make cattle sicken and die, people start loosin blood in the middle of the night... all the fault of a Rougarou!

Ah, so magic is less Occult, monsters are back with a vengeance, legends might be seen on the regular, and people have to get by on know-how more than occult powers.

I got a fang that says different.
Just 'cause you name a critter a certain way doesn't mean that I don't have to put a big fucking wolf down with silver.

Not my fault your swamp-witches aren't kept in check.
