You are Captain SAMANTHA WELLINGS, a newly minted captain of the Centauri Accord!

Currently, you were sitting in the Gullinbursti's infirmary to get some rest, when you encountered a strange scavenger named Artya, who was apparently living in the wreck of an old Hegemony cruiser. Curious, you had Tank bring her aboard for some questioning, hoping that she had information about the Graveyard, the massive debris field your sister Carly may have been hiding in.

Turns out, your suspicions were correct, beyond even your expectations. It seems that Artya not only knows Carly, but was part of her goddamn crew!

Fortunately, Artya seemed completely oblivious to this as she sat there, clad in her hastily cobbled together environment suit and draped in a grimy poncho. Her face was still obscured by her mask, which she had not taken off at all.

Now you were just standing there, staring at Artya. The masked girl tilts her head curiously, wondering why you were staring at her so intently.

You have to wonder what Nat does to the successes and failures of her experimentation. I'm probably sure she patented the ones that did well, which begs the question: how much money she's making on the side?

Or she could be pulling a persona of an altruistic doctor.

You fight the urge to leap across the gap between both your beds and throttling the answers out of the poor girl. You were a ship captain and you were going to be dignified like one!

"I look like this Captain of yours, you say?" You smile sweetly, trying not to put Artya on guard.

If she was, she certainly wasn't showing it. Even though you couldn't see her face, you spent enough time with Tank to be able to intuit a person's mood based solely off of their body language, and it was much easier to tell with her in her fairly form fitting environment suit than it was with Tank's power armor.

YES. Artya nods as she taps away at the keys rapidly. ABOUT THE SAME HEIGHT AND HAIR COLOR.

Artya then leans forward, and you get the impression that she was squinting throw those tinted goggles on her mask.

A SLIGHTLY BIGGER CHEST, AS WELL.

"R-really now." You bite you lip as you try to stay on point. Don't get distracted! "And this Captain of yours, she doesn't happen to have a name, does she?"

CAPTAIN CARLY! Artya writes happily. THE MOST FEARSOME PIRATE IN THE FRONTIER!

Artya then pauses and looks at you, and then at Tank, and then back at you, suddenly remembering where she was.

WHOOPS. She writes again in a panic. You can almost imagine her sweating profusely under that suit of hers. I MISTYPED. PLEASE IGNORE THAT.

You look over to Tank, who gives a casual shrug. He's leaving this up to you.

Artya seems to twitch nervously, like a cornered mouse.

"Oh dear, is something the matter?" Natalia asks as she walks back into the room, distracting all of you just for a moment.

A moment Artya tries to take advantage of.

Artya immediately tries to bolt, scrambling off of her bed and dashing for the door. However, Tank is already at the door and merely slides into place like a massive wall of steel, blocking the way.

"Natalia! Help me stop her!" You yelp as you jump out of your own bed after her.

"Ohoho, an opportunity to test this!" Natalia giggles as she pulls out some odd looking pistol out of her lab coat.

"The FUCK is that?!" You blink as you make a grab for Artya, but she just manages to slip out of your reach with a quick heel pivot.

"Just a simple tranquilizer gun!" Natalia giggles.

It's then that Artya bends her legs and leaps straight up to the ceiling. At first you're wondering what she was thinking, until you see her quickly pry the great off of the ceiling vent. Was she trying to escape through there?!?

"Someone stop her!" You grunt as you leap and grab Artya by the ankles, weighting her down.

"Coming~!" Natalia says in a singsong voice as she skips over and you hear a few soft puffs.

You see a trio of darts plunge into Artya's back and the girl's body tenses and spasms for a second before finally relaxing, the girl letting go of the vent and dropping right down on top of you in a totally not embarrassing pile if it were taken out of context.

"Agh!" You squeak. Thankfully, Tank is there quick as lightning, and gently pulls the unconscious Artya off of you.

"So what shall we do, Captain?" Natalia asks, her eyes sparkling. "Full strip search? Experimentation?"

Tank eyes her suspiciously.

"Do a full medical on her." You try to catch your breath as you get back up to your feet. "But ONLY a medical! No crazy or wildly unethical or even vaguely unethical experimentation! Got it!"

"All right..." Natalia sighs, as if YOU were the big party pooper here. "Well, I suppose I can handle the basics. I'll let you know if I find anything, unless you would like to stay and observe?"

You pause to think on it. Maybe you could learn something you couldn't otherwise figure out just from talking to her. Then again, maybe another investigation of the wreck could yield some clues. Or maybe you should comb the Graveyard a little more...

You nod to Tank. He was free to do what he wanted. Tank nods back, gives a sharp salute, and marches out of infirmary.

"Hrm, well, with Tank leaving, I'm going to need a little bit of assistance here." Natalia waves you over as she carefully removes Artya's camouflage poncho.

"Don't you have nurses?" You frown.

"I could never trust the sacred art of medicine in the hands of a cold and emotionless robot!" Natalia huffs in annoyance. "How can something that feels no PASSION for what it does be trusted with another person's life? Now hurry up and help me get her out of this suit, I want to start breaking out the needles!"

You're pretty sure there's some sort of irony in that statement there, but you don't want to point it out right now.

Removing Artya's suit was simple enough. Even though it was apparently pieced together from numerous other sources, it was pretty resilient, the equivalent of any commercially available suit. Whoever put it together certainly knew what they were doing, and you wouldn't be surprised if it was from Artya herself.

As you and Natalia peel the suit off, you're surprised at just how pale her body was. You could tell that she didn't spend much time under sunlight. Her both was also very thin and lithe, hallmarks of a person who lived their whole life in space.

"Can you help me with this?" Natalia asks as she grasps Artya's mask.

You deposit all of Artya's belongings into the locker and return to the examination table, where Natalia was getting ready for her examination. She points over a nearby table where a glove and facemask dispenser were located. One thing you couldn't fault Natalia for was making sure here workplace was sterile.

"Hmmmm, well, thin bone structure and low muscle mass is indicative of extended living in a low gravity environment." Natalia says as she runs a scanner over Artya's body. "However, evidence of significant scarring and mended bones indicate a lifetime of strenuous work and injury, as well. She's definitely a scavenger, that's for sure."

"To be expected." You nod. "Anything else?"

"Well..." Natalia continues to examine the data from the scanner. "Besides the past injuries, she's otherwise perfectly healthy. No significant abnormalities or mutations beyond normal levels. Signs of higher than normal radiation exposure, which is something we would have to look at later. And... oh dear."

"'Oh dear' what?" You raise an eyebrow.

"Compromised immune system. Another indicator of a person raised in space." Natalia shakes her head.

"What does that mean?" You frown.

"That means, even something simple as the common cold can kill her." Natalia's eyes narrow.

"What? How?"

"Even the dingiest ship interior is fairly sterile compared to what you would find on a planetary environment." Natalia shrugs. "When a person is born, normally they're exposed to a myriad of bacteria and pathogens which their immune system quickly adapts to, so they don't become an issue later in life. Naturally, there are treatments to prevent this in spaceborne infants, but it appears this girl has never received any."

"Is it treatable?" You look at your doctor.

"It is, but this late in her developmental stage..." Natalia sighs. "It won't be fast or easy."

"Ohoho, such a humanitarian, you are!" Natalia giggles.

"It's purely practical!" You huff. "A dead prisoner is one that doesn't talk!"

"Mhm, whatever you say, Captain." Natalia smiles as she taps a few keys on the medical dispenser. "Fortunately, this is a common procedure, we just have to up the dose a bit. Well, a lot, actually. At least the infirmary is sterile so there won't be much risk of accidental exposure."

At that moment, you see Artya's body squirm as she starts to regain consciousness.

I was thinking she was using the money from the patents to fund research for a way to revive someone from being spaced?

You nod to Natalia, who casually presses the injector to Artya's arm and with a soft hiss, more tranquilizer is injected. Artya moans softly under the mask as she falls back to sleep.

"This is the best thing to do for now." Natalia assures you. "She doesn't have to be conscious for the immunization process. Probably better that way, in any case."

"I hope so." You sigh, when your comms suddenly buzz.

"Captain." Lida cuts in. "We have a problem."

"What's going on, Lida?" You blink.

"I'm picking up an anomalous signal being transmitted from the infirmary." Lida warns. "It looks to be some kind of tracking beaco-"

You're already bolting to the storage locker and pry it open, rifling through Artya's gear. However, if there's a beacon, it's well hidden.

"Shit!" You curse.

"Don't worry, I managed to jam the signal, so it's not going anywhere." Lida continues. "Though it managed to broadcast for a few seconds before I was able to lock it down."

"Captain, whoever that girl is working for, might know that she's in trouble now." Bradford joins in. "I suggest we leave while we still can."

"But wait, ain't that girl working for the Cap's sister?" Amy grunts. "Isn't that what we WANT? For her to come to us?"

"I doubt she'd be in much of a talking mood if she thought we did something to one of her crew." Elsa points out.

"And we'd still need to recall Tank." Lida adds.

"Lida, how sure are you that they haven't received the distress signal?" You ask.

"Mmmm, fifty fifty, I guess."

Well, that wasn't very helpful...

"Well, this is perfect for us." You grin. "We can use this to lure Carly to a place of our choosing."

"I suppose." Bradford frowns. "But where? We can't be too obvious about it, or else she'll sniff out the trap."

"And it's dangerous staying in the Graveyard." Elizabeth crosses her arms. "This is practically the pirates' backyard. I can guarantee you that Carly is going to know the terrain far better than us."

"And uh, we're still in Confederate space, so we gotta be careful where we go or they might spot us." Amy adds in.

This certainly was a predicament...

"We'll lure her to where we have the advantage." You say. "Back in Accord space. If she's as good a pirate as Felicity says she is, then she'll have no problem finding her way there."

"Understood." Bradford nods.

"Shouldn't you give her a bit more reason to take that risk?" Elizabeth grins. "Maybe add something to that signal, letting her know that you want to reach out to her?"

"Huh..." You pause.

"That might make things worse." Bradford grunts.

Nope, listen to Bradford, he's totally right about this. If Carly knew WE were the ones that captured her crew, she'd be MUCH more careful and thus less liable to just chase full-on.

"She's looking for her crew. She'll come." You assure them. "I'd do the same thing."

"Touching, Captain." Bradford nods with a slight smile. "Let's hope it doesn't come to that."

"Should we leave now, then?" Elizabeth wonders. "We'd have to recall Tank and the scouting team, and they haven't completed their search of the cruiser yet."

It takes about three more hours for Tank and the scouting team to fully comb the depths of the derelict Hegemony cruiser, trying to find anything of use. Finally, Tank signals that the search is complete and returns to the Gullinbursti.

Thankfully for you, no new threats appear apart from the odd floating piece of debris that floats a bit too close. Looks like the signal didn't get out at all.

You greet Tank as he steps off from the shuttle. From the way he struts, you can definitely tell that he's found something useful.

"So, Tank, what did you find?" You grin.

DATA CORE: Turns out, the cruiser's data core was still fairly intact, and Lida was able to pull some important technical details that could be helpful in combating Hegemony ships in the future.

TECHNICAL SPECS: Looks like Artya is a busy bee, and she's spent her time drawing up all sorts of experimental weaponry. There's details on something called the "Spike", which appears to be some sort of electronic warfare weapon...

MUNITION STOCKPILE: A few of the cruiser's missiles remain intact and freshly loaded in their original launchers. Looks like these warheads use technology that was thought to be lost long ago. Reverse engineering them would increase the firepower of your existing missiles.

Tank hands you a pile of papers. You frown as you look through them. Paper was a rare thing in the civilized systems, mostly because nobody really needed it anymore. However, looks the tradition of physical media was still going strong in the frontier. You can see that there were a number very detailed drawings of some sort of... ship based weapon system.

"I'm assuming Artya drew these." You conclude.

Tank shrugged. Maybe she did, maybe she didn't.

"Either way, let's pass these to Scott. Maybe he can make sense of them." You hand off the papers to a nearby assistant bot, which loyally takes the papers and trots off to Engineering.

"Captain, everything's packed up and ready to go." Bradford announces over the comms. "Amy's getting ready to set course. Where do you want to go?"
