You are Kusajishi Riku, Captain of the Seireitei Court Guard's Ninth Division. The human world has been invaded by an unprecedented number of gillians, hollows powerful enough that anyone below a Lieutenant can't handle one alone. With you are several more Captains and Lieutenant-level fighters along with their manifested zanpakuto, but even these fighters have their limits. If the gillians keep pouring through the breach in reality that's brought them here, it would be enough to wear anyone down eventually.

“You're the menos expert in the Gotei 13,” Hitsugaya pants, having just tanked the blast of a cero. “I'm open to suggestions.”

“What else?” you reply , drawing your own swords. “We kill 'em until we run out.”

“I was expecting something more complicated.”

You shrug. “Sometimes the best plan is not to overthink it.”

That being said this does present a serious problem, one that you haven't had to cope with in a long time: exhaustion. You managed to partially recover from your accelerated Ura Hadō training with your zanpakuto, which brought you to the brink of death, but the fight with hollow-Muramasa and your first actual usage of the new spell you learned have undone some of that. You can't be sure how much more sustained effort you can put in before the last few days truly start to catch up with you.

It would be best to end this as quickly as possible, with as little effort on your part as you can get away with, but your companions have been fighting nonstop for just as long as you have. Yoruichi's still good to go, and the efficiency of Mirai's zanpakuto means she's probably spent the least energy getting to this point out of everyone present. But even Hitsugaya, Suì Fēng, and Rangiku are showing some sign of strain. Hitsugaya apparently still struggles to maintain his immature Bankai for this long, and Little Bee isn't really cut out for this sort of protracted battle in the first place.
>1/2
>>
>>47370110
As for Rangiku, using Haineko at the level she does requires significant focus and awareness: the mental strain must be terrible the longer a fight drags out. Her movements struck you as already being a bit sloppier than usual, probably due to the fact that she'd had to fight against a half-crazed Haineko before coming here.

Byakuya is the worst off by far. He's just concluded a fairly long duel against his fellow Kuchiki, whose skills in combat must have been taxing to the younger Byakuya if Muramasa's abilities are any appropriate indication.

He does his best to maintain that unflappable, aristocratic facade, but it's not working.

“The solution is simple,” he observes. “We can use our reiatsu to seal the rift.”

Hitsugaya shakes his head. “That will take time, and time is precisely what we won't have when we're being swarmed by that many menos.”

“I've been saving my strength,” Yoruichi informs you, “but odds are good I've only got enough left for one or the other.”

“No special tools that can seal that rift?” you ask hopefully.

She shakes her head. “Nope. The Ōin maybe, but it's a rare enough event that nobody's ever made a tool specifically to deal with it.”

“Then why not use this Ōin thing?” Hitsugaya protests. “If it can do the job...”

“The Ōin is something I refuse to use,” Yoruichi interrupts, a dark look in her eyes. “The day I used something like that would be my last as a shinigami.”

>Then we need to clear out the Menos.
>We need to focus on the rift.
>I may lose half my Division against this many Menos, but it's a risk we have to take.

You sigh wearily. Dragging Gin into this when he's still recovering from his injuries wasn't what you wanted to do, but short of throwing your entire Division into the fray and accepting extreme casualties this is the only plan you can really consider that will bring a quick conclusion.

“Go,” you nod. “I'm going to make a call, you'll know the opening when you see it.”

Your denreishinki buzzes twice before you hear Gin's voice reply. “Thank you for calling Pizza Hut, this is Bryan how can I help you?”

“Stuff it, Gin,” you sigh. “I need you to come kill a shitload of gillians so we can close a massive breach in the fabric of reality. You game?”

“Yeah, I was watching that,” he admits. “I'll be through the Senkaimon in a moment.”

Mirai slams into the ground next to you, having been blown backwards by a trio of cero that she needed help from Sesshōseki: a warrior standing easily six feet tall in stony scale armor, with a fearsome porcelain mask of a demonic face.

“Sorry to drop in unannounced,” she apologizes as her zanpakuto slings its oversized club at one of the offending Gillians. The blow shatters its mask, and he offers you a careful nod before going to retrieve it.

“No matter,” you insist, sending a one-handed Byakurai that impales a second Gillian through the head. “We're going to clean up here soon anyway.”

“How soon?”

A massive surge of reiatsu, clearly Captain-strength, makes the answer clear even before you get the chance to reply. Gin's entrance starts him off high above the ground, allowing him to fall like a stone towards the center of the mass of Gillians.

“Bankai!” he declares over the roar of wind in his own ears. “Kamishini no Yari.”

>>
Gin's Bankai lashes out as he spins through the air, slicing through one Gillian after the next with ease in a kilometers-wide arc. The effort however splits a barely-healed wound in his side open, and he tumbles into the woods below. This is your moment.

Byakuya is the first to aim a burst of reiatsu at the opening, with Senbonzakura positioning himself at the opposite corner and doing the same. He manages to maintain his position despite the fact that the Gillians Gin downed are already being replaced. Hitsugaya on the other hand never makes it to the breach, as one of the Gillians uses its dying breath to unleash a cero that blindsides him. The blast takes him out of the air, but you feel that it didn't even come close to killing him: he just won't be much help right now. Suì Fēng tries valiantly to join Byakuya, but even with Kai and Mirai trying to keep the remaining Gillians off her she's forced to break off to avoid the same fate as Hitsugaya.

Yoruichi predictably channels a massive amount of reiatsu into the effort, but you're particularly gratified by Rangiku and Haineko's success. As you join in however you can tell by the feedback you're getting: it's too little. Your fellow Captains are too exhausted to keep this up, and the reinforcements from the Sou Society aren't here yet.

So it comes as no surprise when you massively overexert yourself. The world around you goes dark.

When you open your eyes again, you're not sure at first that you have. The room you're in is dark, but familiar: your quarters in the Seireitei. Next to you sits a familiar figure, who notices quickly that you're awake.

“How long?” you ask.

“Just under two weeks,” Halibel replies calmly, setting aside her book. “We arrived minutes after you passed out to finish the job you started. The rift in Karakura town has been sealed.”

“Anyone else as hard hit as I was?”

The arrancar shakes her head “Captains Kuchiki and Hitsugaya have almost recovered, though the former was asleep for a full week himself.”

“Go back to sleep,” she advises. “Lady Yoruichi and Miss Rangiku are asleep as well. In the morning we will get you caught up. There have been... developments, while you were asleep.”

“What sort of developments are we talking about here?” you ask.

Ever the conversationalist, Halibel begins to list off a series of updates to ongoing situations. “Miss Kuchiki's powers have returned. Kurosaki Ichigo has not. Captain Suì Fēng has taken command of Fifth Division with Hisagi as her Lieutenant. Lady Yoruichi has returned to command of Second Division. Captain Urahara has taken command of Seventh Division and linked that Division to his Research bureau. His Lieutenant is Kira Izuru, though it seems Kurotsuchi Nemu holds more authority.”

“Outranked by a traitor,” you mutter. “That's a new low. Where'd Omaeda end up?”

“Third Seat, Second Division. Behind Lady Yoruichi's current Lieutenant.”

“Any other news?” you ask.

“Last week the prisoner Bambietta Basterbine inquired after you,” Halibel informs you quietly. “She did not share her precise thoughts, but seemed concerned with something. She has not been informed of the reason for your absence.”

You do get the feeling that something more problematic has arisen in your absence, but that Halibel will not bring it up. She seems to be quite firm in her insistence that you rest until morning, and so you relent.

“Thank you, Tia,” you nod quietly, drawing the covers close. “Could you do me a favor and grab a glass of water? My mouth feels like it's full of cotton.”

“Not a problem, she replies.

You fall asleep again before she returns, though this time it's restful.

Morning comes not more than a few hours later, and with it you reawaken. The dim pre-dawn glow fills the room, and you can make out three sleeping figures: Yoruichi and Rangiku on the floor, and Gin on the couch. It seems they've been sleeping in this arrangement for the last two weeks, though you doubt they'd let their concerns get in the way of their Division business. They know you too well for that.

Trying your best not to disturb them, you step outside quietly and walk out into the garden.

Your muscles feel stiff and sore at first from weeks of inactivity as you draw your sword and begin your daily regimen, but by the time the sun has risen fully they've warmed up nicely. It's a sublime feeling, not of accomplishment but of clarity and focus: more of a meditative state than a combative one.

“I see you are back up on your feet,” a familiar voice greets from a nearby snow-viewing lantern, where Mirai sits observing you. “You had us worried.”

“I needed a vacation anyway,” you reply calmly, sheathing your blades. “It's too bad I slept through most of it. Halibel informed me of some of the things I missed.”

“Did she tell you about the Tōjū?” Mirai asks curiously. You've never heard that word before.

“Must've slipped her mind,” you mutter. “After all I was barely awake.”

“We're going to go see Bambi,” you announce. “On the way you can give me a brief explanation about that word you just used.”

“You mean Tōjū?” she asks.

“Yeah, that's the one.”

“Well, we all know what happens when a manifested zanpakuto is defeated by their wielder,” Mirai explains as you lead the way towards the Ninth Division's jail facility. “Thankfully Captain Urahara devised a means of restoring a defeated zanpakuto. The can't be said for a dead shinigami.”

“So you're saying the Tōjū are manifested zanpakuto whose wielders were killed?”

Mirai nods. “Precisely. They seem to possess similar power to what their wielders would in Bankai, making them dangerous foes.”

“Do we have any numbers on how many there might be?”

“According to the after action reports, one hundred and thirty seven shinigami capable of shikai were killed by their own zanpakuto. We have defeated a total of nineteen since you lost consciousness, so I would say one hundred and eighteen remain.”

You sigh at the news. “Sounds like we'll be dealing with this for a while.”

After a few minutes you reach the correct cell, and find Bambietta Basterbine laying calmly on her bed with a magazine in her one remaining hand.

“I see you finally found time,” she greets you coolly.

“I was busy being unconscious,” you reply. “So what did you need to tell me?”

“A Captain by the name of Urahara came through some time ago,” she explains calmly. “He suggested that there was a regenerative serum based on a hollow's rapid healing ability that could restore my arm. He believed that now that my body produces the appropriate antibodies it could be safely used.”

“Why 'curious'? That's an interesting choice of words,” you observe.

Bambietta nods. “Curiosity is the best word for it. It's not a matter of getting my arm back, since I'm not sure I'll be needing it anyway. But regeneration...”

“Something's bothering you.”

Bambietta seems to hesitate for a few moments, considering her words carefully and whether or not she really wants to open up to a woman who should be her enemy. Finally, she relents.

“Do you know where we come from?” she asks. “The Sternritter, I mean? We were mortal like any other humans once, many centuries ago.”

That has some nasty implications. You don't need Tenkotsuki or Rosa to tell you what those are to know it, but they do anyway.

“This is what concerned me about my fellow Sternritter,” Bambietta continues.

“The human brain usually starts going to shit inside a hundred years,” you interpret, sparing Bambi from needing to go into detail. “After several hundred years, an ordinary person would probably start developing personality disorders.”

“What do you mean 'start'?” Bambietta snorts. “Most of us weren't exactly on an even keel to start with, and that only got worse. I've been having more moments of clarity since the transfusion, but I fear even that is a temporary solution.”

“For many of us it may well be too late, but if a regenerative treatment were possible...”

“... you believe the damage to the brain might be regenerated as well?” Rosa posits, manifesting at your side. “It's insane... but insane and impossible are two different things?”

“If my peers can be spared a slow decline into complete insanity,” Bambietta concludes, “then I want to know about it. And even if it kills me... then I prefer such an end over turning out like some of the freaks I worked with among the Sternritter.”

Talk to Urahara first, because brain damage is specifically one of the things that hollow high-speed regen doesn't fix, if the fight with SadBat is any indication. Also the fact that even with regen, head shots are still just as effective.

But make the deal if he agrees with the theory.

lets see, if the regen part of the rehab works on the brain, then we can push the proposal of having Bambi give names of comrades she trusts for us to capture and have them put under rehab. In exchange, training scrubs is on the table as well as helping SS bring down Aizen with the war effort as well as cleaning up the Tōjū which would give her something to do.

I bet when Bambietta has those rare moments of clarity she has the sudden sensation of feeling really fucking old and complaining of being too old for the whole war bullshit despite having a sexy mid 20s body.

I guess that means she's also starting to consider making a retirement plan if she's going to spend a majority of her time off the frontlines.

“I'll need something in return from you,” you nod, “probably helping a dumbass quincy kid I know train so he'll be less of an embarrassment. But I'm sure we can arrange something.”

“Basically I get to remain lucid, and in exchange you own me,” she interprets. “I think I can live with that.”

“Sort of,” you nod. “Not as extreme as that of course.”

“Like I said, I can deal with it. This is important enough.”

You retrieve one of the three vials of regenerative serum from your sash, and eye it carefully. You figure that Urahara must be able to whip up another one just in case it's needed, though you also have your doubts that anything that seems this convenient can be so easily abused. Using this stuff should probably only ever be a last resort.

“Okay, I'm going to jab you now,” you agree. “Mirai, crack the cell.”

Your subordinate does as you request, but stands at the ready in case something goes wrong.

“You're really not comfortable with this are you?”

She shakes her head. “It is more a matter of caution. You taught me that, remember?”

“Fair enough.”

You lift Bambietta's hair up off the back of her neck, and push the needle gingerly into her skin right below the base of her skull. The Sternritter draws in a sharp breath as you withdraw the needle, and she quickly collapses to her knees as the serum takes effect. But unlike before with the blood transfusion, there's no screaming involved.

A few moments pass before she manages to rise to her feet. You can't help but notice that her arm still hasn't regenerated at all... clearly there are some limitations to the serum. It only seems to affect the nearest point of damage rather than regenerating the entire body. Good thing you figured to inject her in the back of the neck rather than her arm stump, otherwise it may have healed the wrong part of her body.

“How're you feeling?” you ask carefully.

Bambietta flexes her fingers, then looks down at her stump. “I don't feel like killing you right now. Still not a fan of shinigami in general, but that must mean something.”

“How do we know it worked?” Mirai muses. “Other than the obvious?”

“I suppose I can call Urahara here,” you shrug. “Other than that I don't know of anyone who could honestly tell us anything about how a centuries-old quincy brain works. I couldn't even tell you what qualifies as normal here.”

“Definitely not qualified to talk about 'normal' in general,” Rosa quips.

“Hey, you?” you scowl. “Shut up.”

“Just saying.”

Much to your surprise, Bambietta does something you've never heard her do: she chuckles.

“Did you just...”

She nods, apparently a little surprised herself. “I think I might have, yeah.”

That doesn't sound pleasant.

“Mirai,” you sigh, shutting your eyes in contemplation, “I'm afraid I'll need to rely on your vigilance for a while longer.”

“Why is that?” she asks.

“I think it's time our prisoner here got some fresh air,” you explain, choosing your words carefully to remind both of them that you are still treating Bambietta with caution. “Even murderers in the living world get to go out to the yard occasionally. Cooping them up in here for this long isn't exactly fair.”

“I understand the sentiment,” Mirai agrees. “Despite my lack of trust in her, her cooperation has exceeded my expectations.”

“Your caution is justifiable,” Bambietta nods. “I know I wouldn't have given you the same consideration. Perhaps not even now... it's difficult to say how things would be in the reverse situation.”

“Before that, we have another prisoner to speak with,” you observe, stopping in front of Menoly's cell. The arrancar remains still. You can see she's scratched out a line for each day she's been down here into the wall, and you gather she hasn't had much else to do in here aside from that.

“You still alive in there?”

There's a moment of silence before she replies. “Surprisingly, yes. You might be surprised how much peace of mind can be found by simply resigning yourself to fate. Even if I were stronger, my failure was such that Lord Aizen would never commit forces to my rescue. So here I am, and here I'll stay.”

“There's someone you should probably talk to,” you tell Menoly calmly. “An arrancar who has a purpose that's not sucking up to a megalomaniac. You could probably learn a lot from her.”

“If you say so,” she shrugs.

Wow. Good talk.

After leaving the prison cells behind, you step out into the Ninth Division grounds. Bambietta blinks a few times, straining her eyes in the sunshine as she adjusts. It highlights how long she's been in that hole for, and there's some actual sympathy there.

“Come on,” you nod. “Let's go deal with... stuff.”

“So I'm tagging along with you on your daily business?” Bambietta asks. “Really testing my newfound patience here.”

“That was a joke,” she adds in response to Mirai's stern look.

It's time now for breakfast at the barracks, and people seem more pleased to see you up and about than they are confused at your company. After all they're used to seeing you show up with all sorts of people who may or may not be dangerous, but they're not used to you passing out for two weeks at a time.

Mirai carries two trays, one for Bambietta and one for herself, and Rangiku flags you down.

“Good to see you back up on your feet,” she greets you warmly as you tear into your meal. “I see you have a guest.”

“Out on good behavior,” Bambietta replies calmly, attacking a sausage with the side of her fork since she can't use a knife and fork at the same time.

Yoruichi joins you, two trays of her own stacked atop each other. “So there's a Women's Association meeting today. Anyone else going?”

“If it's later in the day you can take Halibel,” you suggest. “After all most of the arrancar we know are ladies. Though... maybe “lady” is a bit of a stretch. Female, at least.”

“And our Sernritter friend here?” Rangiku asks calmly, watching as Bambietta gives up trying to cut her food and simply skewers it, content to eat it off the fork bite by bite.

You shrug. “Take her along. What better test for her newfound tolerance?”

“Captain Kusajishi injected her with a regenerative serum this morning,” Mirai explains the reality behind your joke. “It was an attempt to restore her human brain to a state before hundreds of years of age degraded her mental processes.”

Yoruichi cocks her head at you in surprise, then looks at Bambietta. “Did it work?”

Bambietta shrugs. “It certainly didn't regenerate my arm. Jury's still out on my brain... can't exactly see if anything changed, and I'd prefer that it remain that way.”

“Fair enough. Kisuke going to take a look?”

“Haven't had a chance to mention it to him,” you admit. “And I probably won't. I have something else to do this morning.”

“You heard that Ichigo's still missing,” Yoruichi surmises, smiling quietly. “Go. Find your nephew, Riku.”

“I'll meet up with Rukia when we get there,” you decide. “She should still be staying at the Kurosaki clinic, correct?”

Rangiku nods thoughtfully. “She is. Based on her most recent report that is.”

“I'd also like to bring Apacci along. Should probably get the banished officers used to the idea sooner rather than later.”

Yoruichi shrugs at the notion before finishing her second cup of coffee. “Hey, your call. A lot of people would rather ease them into it, but we may not really have time for that. Hard to say if it's the right or wrong call.”

“Going with my gut,” you admit.

“You could do worse. Say hi for me.”

You chuckle dryly. “Who says I'm gonna find them?”

“You will. You didn't get this far taking no for an answer.”

Too true, Yoruichi. Too true.

Apacci, as it turns out, is hanging out at the kidō practice range firing bala at... the floor, really. It's not that she's missing, she just seems to be deliberately targeting anything downrange except for the actual target.

“What are you doing, exactly?” you ask, befuddled. “Do the groundskeepers owe you money?”

“Very funny,” she sighs, relaxing her shoulders and letting her arms fall to her sides. “I'm tryin' to get it to reflect off a surface, attack at an unexpected angle. Could be useful against kidō or groups of enemies. You know, block it and it hits someone else in the face.”

“Wanna help me find my nephew?” you ask.

“You mean the cute little punk who tried to save Miss Rukia?” she muses. “Sure, I'm in.”

“Did you just call my nephew cute?”

You tear open a hole between worlds and excuse yourself from the Soul Society for a while, emerging in Karakura town. The Kurosaki clinic is closeby, so you let yourself in through an upstairs window.

"I have produced a temporary physical body for you," Tenkotsuki informs you as your outfit changes to resemble the local high school uniform once again. "Please try not to break it."

"Isshin," you greet calmly as you walk down the stairs.

He looks up from his paper. "Ah, welcome back sis. Been a crazy few days I bet?"

"You know it."

"I take it you're here to try and find Ichigo?" he asks, setting the paper aside altogether. "After that scrap two weeks ago we were a little worried, but Rukia made it clear that he wasn't involved."

"So you're just trusting him to take care of himself?" Apacci asks skeptically.

Isshin shrugs. "Sometimes your kids just don't want the help. It's part of growing up, and sometimes we adults have to respect their wishes even if they end up making a mistake."

"Sounds hard," she frowns. "Remind me never to have any."

You can tell Isshin wanted to ask the obvious question, but he seems to bite his tongue. Rather hard, in fact.

"Rukia!" you call out. "What're you doing, it's time to go!"

Your subordinate pokes her head out of the kitchen. "Ah, Captain! I'm sorry, I was... busy."

"Making lunch for the kids?" you ask, raising an eyebrow.

"Miss Masaki is out of town," she explains. "And Mr Kurosaki is... well..."

"I suck at cooking," he admits, returning to his newspaper. "Always have, probably always will."

You invite yourself into the kitchen to see an example of her handiwork: each individual item looks like the familiar "Chappy the rabbit" character, popular with shinigami women for some reason. It's actually rather impressive, particularly compared to what you used to cook for Gin and Rangiku, at least at first... in fact you're a little amazed in retrospect that they still talk to you.

“It's actually pretty simple,” you explain. “There's a pretty small number of places where you could hide a kidō barrier, which I assume is the reason we can't sense him. So we narrow down the list of likely spots and investigate them. Luckily you've got one of the top experts in stealth and kidō present.”

“Shoulda brought Kaoru,” Isshin muses quietly, half to himself. “She'd absolutely love this kinda thing.”

You raise your hand, silencing Rukia's question before she even asks it. “So where to?”

Isshin frowns, deep in contemplation. “The warehouse district would be my bet. Out away from any major residential neighborhoods, and pretty quiet most of the time. Perfect place to set up shop.”

“Thanks,” you nod. “I'm taking my subordinate.”

“Sure thing,” Isshin agrees. “Bout time this whole thing got wrapped up anyway, so she can go home.”

You take your brother's advice and make for the warehouses on the edge of town. You're probably looking for one that's been vacated or sold by its previous owner, or else one that's empty. Anything that suggests it's not being used for its intended purpose. From there it's a matter of using your spiritual senses to search out the tiny flaws in any spell used to hide an object, which if it's Hachigen managing the barrier may be a tough job. He specializes in this sort of thing, after all.

In this entire place there are only a few truly “abandoned” warehouses to focus on, and so you split up to cover more ground faster. It's not long before Apacci returns with news.

“So I found a structure that I can bounce my reiatsu off of,” she explains, “but that I can't see. Think that's our barrier?”

You follow her to the warehouse in question and examine it closely. Some careful prodding with Tenkotsuki reveals that it is indeed protected by a barrier hidden behind a reiatsu-blocking “curtain” of kidō that while nearly invisible to your senses still reflects Apacci's reiatsu-pulse technique the same as any other spiritual construct or being would.

“He's not letting us in,” you muse quietly as Rukia joins you and Apacci by the door to the warehouse. “Rude.”

“Are you sure Ichigo is in there?” Rukia asks. You can tell that her spiritual senses, while acute by normal standards, aren't quite at the level of a regular Captain's. She can't even tell there's anything unusual with this structure.

You nod confidently. “Oh, this is Hachi's work alright. And I have no doubts in my mind he knows we're out here.”

“Think we should... you know,” Apacci gestures at the wall vaguely. “Let ourselves in?”

“That could be seen as an aggressive act,” Rukia replies, her face doing a great imitation of Byakuya's stern “I'm-a-centuries-old-noble” expression. It must be something she practices, because she's only like this when she's working.

“It's not that simple,” you sigh, striking the barrier full-force. Your blow is stopped cold. “Hachi knows what the hell he's doing... but there isn't a barrier anywhere that's perfect. It's just easier for us if he drops it willingly.”

“So?” Apacci presses.

A thought occurs to you. With the strongest punches you can manage you beat against the barrier in a familiar rhythm, tapping out a message to Hachi as he maintains the barrier's integrity from within with alternating jabs and haymakers to form “dots” and “dashes”.

Kusajishi here, stop.
I know you know, stop.
Let me in, stop.
Or I'll huff and I'll puff and you know the rest.
Stop.

“Anything?” Rukia asks, trying to puzzle out what you've just done: Morse code isn't exactly common knowledge among shinigami these days, though it used to be more widely known. Either Hachi didn't understand or isn't replying, because nothing happens.

“Okay, have it your way,” you mutter, drawing your sword. “Raze, Kobara no Tachi.”

A simple thrust into the barrier begins to break it down, and a pulse of reiatsu from shunkō widens it into a hole big enough to step through. The blast shakes the building, but it holds.

“Keep on your toes,” you suggest. “These lot... well, let's just say they may not be happy to see us. Any of us, really. Even me.”

The inside of the warehouse is totally empty, and the only worthwhile feature of note is a small indentation in the wall about big enough for a person to have been slammed into it there. Whoever it was clearly got their shit pushed in by someone WAY out of their league.

“I found the entrance,” Rukia announces, gesturing to a trapdoor in the center of the room.

“Good work, Mystery Team,” you joke, lifting the door and dropping through.

Predictably, the greeting you receive is rather rude.

“Chop cleanly, Kubikiri Orochi!”

Rukia draws her sword immediately to parry a strike from her own assailant, but Hiyori's swing at you is stopped dead without you even needing to move. Apacci steps between you and the pint-sized vizard in an instant and raises her arm to block the strike, which clangs off her hierro as if it were an iron shield.

“You really thought an attack like that could cut a Captain?” Apacci growls. “What kind of moron are you?”

You place a hand against Apacci's ribs and gently push her aside. “No, let her try it. It'll illustrate the point.”

It's only when you hear your own voice that you realize your sword is still released: in your sheath, but still active. It's so natural at this point that you barely feel any different.

Hiyori reaches up to her face and pulls down a hollow mask... so they're still doing this, are they? You can't help but feel a little disappointed.

You watch as Hiyori comes at you again, but faster this time: until you lock eyes with her and crush her with the full weight of your reiatsu in your Resurrección. She stops in her tracks, sword arm still raised as if to strike, momentarily struck dumb by the outburst. And how could she not be? The overwhelming intent to kill you're capable of focusing into that cold glare, the raw power of a shinigami whose power is greater than that of an average Captain, and in this form of release? For someone whose spiritual power is ultimately still that of a Lieutenant, the experience must be one of primal terror.

“What's wrong, Hiyori?” you ask her, your black eyes boring into hers with laser-like intensity. “You can't have imagined that you would be the only one whose skills would improve in a hundred years?”

A strained noise escapes from behind her mask as she tries to speak, and uncharacteristically for her fails. Her eyes, though they may look the same as yours, betray only her fear.

“Nothing to say after all this time?” you continue as if ignorant of her dilemma. “That's rare. I was sure you'd be shouting at me like you always used to, when we were both Lieutenants.”

“I think Hiyori gets the point,” a voice you haven't heard in a long time greets you as its owner walks calmly across the arid terrain of the training chamber. “Captain. I thought the barrier would have made it obvious that we weren't too keen on visitors.”

“And I'm not too keen on you sneaking into my Division's barracks and snatching my nephew, Shinji,” you grumble in argument, releasing your Resurrección. “Sometimes shit doesn't work out the way we'd like. I'd have thought you'd know that by now.”

“Ichigo's your nephew?” Shinji asks, honestly surprised. “Nobody ever told me that!”

“Yeah,” you explain, “Shiba Isshin's his dad. Kinda shocked it never came up.”

Thread 32:

>The feeling is simply overwhelming. Tenkotsuki's voice and presence are gone from your mind, as are Rosa's, leaving you truly alone for the first time in two centuries. But something interesting is happening to you now as well: memories come flooding into your mind. Your father teaching you to speak German, thinking that some day in his lifetime Japan would be opened to foreigners. Your childhood friends on Okinawa, now long dead and turned to dust. Your mother's face when she realized you had inherited Quincy abilities from both your parents. Their deaths at the hands of a familiar-looking Lieutenant wearing the poppy of your own Division on his upper arm.

You barely even notice yourself move. The first punch is a wild haymaker aimed at Kensei's face, which he instinctively blocks with a typical boxer's guard. He's still an excellent hakuda user after all these years, but you were counting on that formulaic response. Even as he opens his mouth to make a comment his eyes go wide as you drive your knee forward into his crotch, following through on the momentum of your charge.

He goes down to his knees, clutching in silent pain.

“That was for killing my parents, back when I was alive,” you snarl, before breaking his nose with a second punch to the face. “And that was for calling my hollow-daughter a 'thing', you jackass. Now that that's over, we can be friends.”

“I'd hate to see what you do to your enemies,” Shinji remarks, lowering his arms and leg from the awkward defensive curl he'd adopted. “I can see why you'd be angry, but could you please try not beating up my friends?”

“Depends,” you reply stoically. “If all they're going to do is shittalk and swing their swords at us, then no.”

“For what it's worth,” Lisa raises her hands defensively, having sheathed her sword soon after it became clear that continuing her tussle with Rukia was futile, “I'm done with this whole mess. I'll take you to see Kurosaki, if nobody has any complaints?”

“Nope,” Shinji replies. Hiyori just shakes her head, eyes still wide even after her hollow mask has crumbled away. Kensei moans something inaudible from the ground, an octave higher than you'd normally expect.

“Good,” you nod, relaxing slightly. “Believe it or not I don't enjoy hitting you people... except for Kensei just now. That was rather cathartic.”

Near some samey-looking rocks, which seem like they could have been lifted from any of Kisuke's other training chambers, you find the rest of the Vizards: Hachi mumbles something as he tries to reform the barrier you damaged, while Rose and Love take a break from discussing manga to stare at you. Mashiro's asleep on the ground, mouth wide open as she snores, and Ichigo... well, Ichigo's cleaning dishes in an apron.

“What bet did you lose?” Apacci asks him.

“I'll strangle that damn Hiyori for this...” he growls, attacking a pot with renewed vigor.

Speaking of great photo ops, we missed Shinji in the sleeveless uniform of the Ninth when we came to pick up Ichigo. That would have been a great picture to hold over him forever.

Maybe he still has it somewhere in the warehouse, stashed away after his escape...
>>
Above all else... you NEED a picture of this. Without your nephew noticing you manage to snap a three-quarters view of him in that getup with your denreishinki. With a chuckle you send it to Yoruichi, Rangiku, Isshin, Masaki, and the Head Captain with the simple text “found him”.

“Well then, first of all this is Apacci,” you announce to the assembled Vizards. Hiyori gives Mashiro a nudge with her toe to wake her up, and she sits bolt straight with a quiet insistence she was already awake.

Apacci raises her hand. “Hi. I'm an arrancar.”

Mashiro wiggles her way over to Apacci, poring over her from every angle like a buyer evaluating an old statue as you continue your explanation. “I've helped several menos evolve into arrancar, and they've been my trusted friends and allies for a hundred years. So please don't make the same mistake as Kensei and insult her, because I'm sick and tired of having to defend her existence to people.”

“So... you'd all be Vizards?” Apacci asks carefully. “As in the Lieutenants and Captains who were infected by Aizen the same night Lady Riku was?”

Love adjusts his sunglasses, basically fidgeting. “That's right, lady. Though we got kicked outta the Seireitei for it, which was pretty harsh if you ask me.”

“I'd have had the same end or worse if they'd known,” you point out quietly. “Maybe I was lucky, maybe I had it harder trying to keep it hidden, I dunno. But that's in the past now.”

“I have some of my memories from my life,” you admit slowly. “They return gradually the more I use my zanpakuto. Speaking of which, I can't help but notice you're still using hollowfication.”

“Yeah?” Shinji asks. “What about it?”

“Can't you... you know. Control your hollow powers properly?”

“The hell are you talkin' about?” the blonde former-shinigami replies. “You're not makin' any sense.”

“I mean you're dominating your hollows to don those masks, right?” you ask. “You haven't figured out a way to cooperate with them, even with Urahara's advice?”

“No,” Shinji admits with a look of slowly dawning comprehension. “Nothin' like that. Why, what have you done?”

Why must you hurt me so?
>>
>>47378292
Very good point. She deserves to get a punch in too.
>>
>>47378292
NOOOOOO. Riku broke his nose, Rosa would legitimately try to kill him on the spot if she was given a chance and nothing anyone said to her could convince her not to.

He hurts us because he loves us. :3c
>>
>>47378360
And we love him for it.

Thanks for running!

How does Appaci feel about us publicly declaring her our hollow-daughter?
>>
>>47378284
Thanks for the thread!

Well, in Soul Society they say, Apacci's heart-hole shrank three sizes that day.

how big is that hole now? from when we first met her to today?
>>
>>47378709
You could no longer fit your fist through it, so maybe a 3/4 reduction.

>>47378690
I'll be working on it, but not everyone among the vizards will get their own entry.

>[insert inappropriate joke about fisting our daughter's hole here]

>With a chuckle you send it to Yoruichi, Rangiku, Isshin, Masaki, and the Head Captain with the simple text “found him”.
>Head Captain

A man with over a thousand years of practice with his poker face and bullying.

Dear lord, what have we done?

Only what had to be done.

feels like the arrancar would have some sort of chart to graph their their hollow hole size similar to how families mark and date the doorframe to keep track of their children's growing height.
>>
>>47379340
what, like have the arrancar stand against the wall, reach a pencil through the hole and trace the diameter?

>the commandos keep walking in on their captain fist deep in her arrancar friends, they never have the nerve to ask why
>>
>>47379552
or just take a simple yardstick/ruler and measure before putting it on a graph.
>>
>>47379766
take the fun out of it why dont you
>>
>>47379908
the ruler is for the holes that are too small for our fist to fit through.
>>
>>47379217
surprised we didn't wend a copy to Rukia and Apacci too, so they can have a copy forever
