You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

"And, honest to god, I get into an honest to god sword fight with her!" You laugh through the special phone Anna had given you.

"Fucking seriously?" Woel groans from the other end of the line. "Shit, I wish I was there to see that!"

"Yeah, me too." You sigh. "But man, Kidd's a real piece of work, ya know? She's been patrolling up and down the entire northeast coast for three whole fucking months and nobody realized!"

"How the hell is that possible?" Your Abyssal opposite asked in confusion. "Aren't the coasts supposed to be heavily protected?"

"Yeah, well, most of the Navy patrols are our beyond visual range of the coast." You explain. "And any civvies that saw her assumed she was already part of the Navy and never reported her."

"Weird."

"Yeah."

"Still, I wish I was there... or anywhere, really." Woel sighed, not even trying to hide her frustration.

"What, you don't like the Queen Mary?" You blink.

"Oh no, Mary's super nice and all, taking me in like this!" Woel insists. "Hell, she even got me a job here!"

"Oh?" A grin creeps across your face. "What kinda job?"

"...that's none of your business." Woel said defensively.

"You're a maid, aren't you?" You give a very wide, shit-eating grin that you oh so wish that Woel could see.

"O-o-of course not!" Woel stammers unconvincingly. "I-I just help Mary with the housekeeping, is all!"

"So... basically a maid." You confirm. "Do you get the cute uniform too?"

"S-shut up!" Woel wails, all but confirming it.

"Bet ya look real cute in it!" You continue.

"Stoooop iiiiiiiit!" Woel wails.

"Have any guys hit on you yet?" You continue to press the attack.

"HOEL I SWEAR TO GOD IF YOU DON'T SHUT UP I WILL FIND A WAY TO REACH THROUGH THIS PHONE AND THROTTLE YOU!" Woel roars.

"You really gotta send pictures! I always wanted to see what I'd look like in one! Without actually wearing it, of course!"

"FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF-" Woel is about to belt out a truly venomous curse before you hear Mary shush her in the background.

"Don't be too loud, or you'll disturb the guests!" You can faintly hear the cruise ship tut.

"R-right." Woel groans. "Can... can we just talk about something else?"

"Yeah, yeah." You nod. You guess that's enough teasing for now, especially as you glance at your timer. All the various alphabet agencies were for sure trying to track down the signal, and Anna warned you that just to be safe, to keep calls under a few minutes at any time. "So how's LA bee treating you?"

"It's... weird." Woel sighs. "I mean, I still have most of your memories, you know? I REMEMBER being here, being to a lot of places here, but at the same time I KNOW I've never actually stepped foot in this city until now. It's just... impossible to describe. Gives me the chills, really."

"Sorry, I didn't really know anywhere else for you to go." You sigh.

"Hey, I don't blame you. I got dealt a pretty shitty hand." Woel sighs back. "But, well, my arm's healed up, and Mary's willing to give me a decent chunk of cash. Enough to keep me going for a while. I kinda just want to... go out there, you know? I don't want to be cooped up in this beached ship for the rest of the my life. No offense, Mary."

"None taken!"

Aw nuts, you weren't expecting the conversation to take this direction. Then again, since Woel was practically a mirror image of you, you guess you shouldn't be surprised she was getting anxious about being sidelined like this.

"Well, it's not like I can stop you." You sigh. "Like, I of all people should know that I'm TERRIBLE at following orders. Just... just be careful, okay? There are things other than Abyssals and Vahlen to worry about out there..."

"God, yer starting to sound morel like Enterprise or Mulberry!" Woel chortles.

"No shit?" You chuckle right when your timer begins beeping madly. "Shit, guess time's up. See ya next time, okay?"

"Yeah, looking forward to it." Woel responds happily before you hang up.

You sigh as you slide the phone into your pack, away from prying eyes. You knew it was already encrypted, so it wouldn't be easy to crack if it got picked up by a random passerby, but still, you didn't want to take the risk.

You sorta guess that you were starting to get used to Norfolk, even if the weather was colder and drearier than even the worst day at Pearl Harbor. Things were starting to fall into a bit of a consistent schedule, with regular patrols and scouting missions. Right now, though, with the recovery of Kidd, things were being a bit hectic. Portland and San Diego were busy putting Kidd through her "orientation" to get her up to speed with current USN procedures, tactics, and rules. You were sure she was having a grand old time.

Meanwhile, Haida should be just coming back from a northern patrol with the Fletchers, to get them used to cold weather ops. A greeting from a familiar face should cheer them up.

Meanwhile, your sisters Johnston and Heerman along with White Plains were out trying to find a decent place to eat other than the on-base mess hall. Apparently options were pretty limited here, especially with leave policies for shipgirls here.

And you were hearing rumors that the Captain was prepping you all for an upcoming "special mission..."

You go off to see how your sisters are doing. You were feeling a bit hungry yourself, and... well... it just wasn't the same without Mulberry around. That perhaps was one of the biggest things you missed about Pearl. Fortunately, tracking them down wasn't too hard. You just had to find the closest McDonalds, which just so happened to be very near the base itself. Unsurprisingly, you could see the building was absolutely PACKED with both regular human sailors and the local shipgirls. You were just barely able to pick out the heads of your sisters and White Plains... and Anna, surprisingly enough. You squeeze your way through the mass of people to link up with them.

"Oh, hey Hoel!" Johnston grins as she punches you in the shoulder. "How was the call? Woel doing well?"

"As well as she can." You shrug. "Anna, you doing okay?"

"Y-yeah!" Anna nods her head rapidly. "It's not like Kidd hurt me or anything! It was just a bit scary! Plus, well, I guess it beats having to sail near the Dark Zone..."

"What exactly IS the Dark Zone, Anna?" You ask the communications ship. "I keep hearing it being mentioned, but nobody's really ever actually said what it is."

"Well..." Anna bites her lip. "Technically, there's TWO Dark Zones, around the North and South Poles. It's in those two places that the Abyssals really took root and... strange things began to happen. Weird atmospheric events and anomalous, constant storm activity have made this phenomenon called the Storm Wall. It's just a solid barrier of black fog clouds, which makes it all but impossible for satellites or other remote sensors from seeing what's going on in there. No signals come out, either. And every drone we've sent through the Storm Wall has never gone back. So... we have no idea what's going on in the Poles, hence the term 'Dark Zone.'"

"I see." You frown. "So basically they're the Abyssals' main headquarters."

"M-most likely." Anna nods rapidly. "W-we've seen Abyssals shipping raw materials in and fresh Abyssal units coming out."

"Guess that means we're eventually have to go through it, huh?" You look to Johnston, Heerman, and White Plains.

"W-well hopefully we figure out a way to cross the Storm Wall safely!" Anna says quickly. "Or find out what's causing it in the first place..."

"That's why you were being sent out there?" Heerman asks.

"Mhm!" Anna nods. "They're hard to detect, but we've found occasional, weak signals emanating from beyond the Storm Wall. We've been trying to make sense of them, but all we have are pieces and fragments. Nothing even resembling useful data..."

"Huh, shame." Johnston sighs. "Why don't we just drive a whole damn fleet through there? Screw that wall!"

"Obviously, the issue is that everything that's gone through the Storm Wall has never coe back." White Plains points out.

"Well, it'll be different if's us!" Johnston boasts.

"Hey now, let's not get ahead of ourselves, here." You chuckle nervously. "There's plenty of Abyssals out here that we need to take care of first!"

"Hmmm, I guess you're right!" Johnston smiles happily. "We'll send them all running back, and THEN we kick that damn wall down!"

"I-I wish I had the confidence of a destroyer!" Anna nodded.

"So, since your original mission got err... 'interrupted', are you gonna be sent out there again?" You ask Anna.

"It looks like it, yes." Anna's nervousness is clear on her face. "Even though I'm under heavy escort, going so close to the Dark Zone is always so scary! Y-you never know if Abyssals will just come out of the Wall and start attacking!"

"Well, if that ever happens, just let us know! I'll be glad to give you an escort!" You grin as you pat Anna on the head.

"Us too!" Johnston and Heerman nod in agreement.

"Well, let's go ask the Captain, then!" You announce.

"After food." Johnston reminds you.

"Of course, after food." You correct yourself.

At this point, the line has FINALLY advanced enough that you can order at the counter. You and your sisters order nothing but chicken nuggets and fries, because honestly, why the hell else would you go to McDonalds? Anna decides to order something more "adult" by getting a Big Mac meal (which she probably wouldn't even be able to finish), while White Plains calmly orders two super sized Big Mac meals. Even though she was only an escort carrier, she was still a carrier, naturally carried a similar appetite for resources.

You all continue your small talk and chit chat as you eat, mostly just bitching about how Norfolk is too wet and too cold to your liking. Also a little discussion on what you thought was going to happen to Kidd. Heerman and White Plains seemed to think that Kidd would be folded into the Atlantic shipgirl fleet, since that was where she was found. However, you and Johnston were of the opinion that since it was your task force that found Kidd, Kidd was yours by right. Plus, the Admiral seemed eager to keep adding more shipgirls to your force, so it wasn't too big of a stretch. Anna, naturally, didn't have much of an opinion.

"Jeez, Anna." You chuckle as you toss away the last of your garbage. "Nobody will judge you if you order a Happy Meal, or even a meal that isn't super size!"

(cont)
>>
>>47243859
The whole point wasn't that nuking the Dark Zones was sensible, it was how insane the thought of "let's just get a fleet together and charge in blind!" was for nuking them to be *more* sensible than that.

"S-shut up!" Anna groans, her fries and burger only half finished. "I-I'm an escort carrier just like White Plains!"

"But you don't carry planes anymore." White Plains points out. "So naturally your logistical footprint would be smaller than mine."

"Nnnnnnno!" Anna whimpers.

"Come on, let's get going." You grunt. "Let's talk to the Captain!"

With that, your little group makes their way over to the Captain's office, just a temporary little space in Norfolk's main administration building. As you walk towards his door, you could see it was open just a crack, and you could also hear his voice, and the Admiral's, softly emanating from it.

"You look tired, Captain." The Admiral chuckles.

"Well, there IS a roughly four hour time difference between Norfolk and Pearl." The Captain sighs. "The paperwork the Atlantic fleet is drowning me in isn't helping either. I thought the point of NATO was to STREAMLINE coordination."

"You'd think that, wouldn't you?" The Admiral chortles.

>FATE POINT GAINED!
>You currently have 2 points!

You put a finger to your lips to let your sisters, White Plains, and Anna know to stay quiet as you quietly slide up to the crack in the door.

"You really should consider getting a secretary." The Admiral chortles heartily. "Sammy here has been a TREMENDOUS help, with everything. Despite her attitude, she's quite the hard worker!"

"It's not like she has much else to do since you refuse to deploy her for combat operations." The Captain retorts a bit coldly.

"You know what will happen if I do." The Admiral sighs.

"I'm just being pragmatic here, Admiral." The Captain explains simply. "Sam has extremely powerful combat potential, which I feel is underutilized in a logistic role."

"We've been over this already, Captain. Sammy will stay where she is." The Admiral says flatly.

Jeez, is what you were hearing real? The Admiral and the Captain actually in an argument? There certainly were interesting things going on in the backdoors.

"How about North Carolina?" The Admiral suggest cheerfully, as if trying to steer the subject away from Sam. "I can see the both of you have quite a lot in common!"

"I think relations between human staff and shipgirls should remain strictly professional." The Captain coughs.

"Oh? But isn't the relationship between an officer and his secretary already professional?" The Admiral laughed lightly. "Or perhaps you're afraid that working so close with North Carolina would... 'compromise' either of you in some way?"

"I... I don't know what you're trying to get at here, sir." The Captain grumbles.

"Really now?" You can almost imagine the smug grin on the Admiral's face. "Give it a thought."

"Maybe." The Captain responded noncommittally.

"Anyways, has the White House approved the list?" The Admiral continues.

"They have, but they were a bit disappointed that Iowa and Enterprise wouldn't be participating."

"The realities of war, unfortunately." The Admiral noted. "But they're still getting the famous Taffy 3. They can't complain about that!"

"They have and they still are." The Captain continues. "At the very least they want a battleship or carrier present."

"I'm sorry to say, but we're stretched thin here." The Admiral groans. "Tell the President I'll see what I can do, but no promises."

"Yes sir." The Captain responds as he finally hangs up.

Before you can even think about knocking on the door, it suddenly swings open with the force of a hurricane, and you immediately see the Captain glaring down at you.

"How long were you there?" He says flatly. There's not anger or malice in his voice, which makes him glare all the more scarier for some reason.

"W-we were only here for a little bit!" You explain. "Right, girls? Girls?"

You turn your head to see empty hallway. Your very own sisters had abandoned you in your time of need, leaving you to deal with the Captain by yourself! Those bitches! Even White Plains and Anna, too!

"Um, um, um, well...." You stammer. "Are you fucking North Caro-"

That's when the Captain curtly grabs you by the ear and drags you into his office.

"Owowowowowowowowow!" You whine ineffectually.

"I'd appreciate if you didn't spread rumors like that." The Captain continues as he sits you down in a chair. You look around the small, cramped temporary office and do indeed see the entire room drowning in paperwork, maps, and other documents.

"Shit, ya really do need a secretary." You gasp.

"Noted." The Captain sighs as he sits behind his desk. "You understand that what you heard is NOT for public consumption."

"Y-yes sir."

"That means I hear a peep of this anywhere, you know where I'll come looking first." The Captain narrows his eyes. "So unless you think Shemya is a nice vacation spot, I suggest you keep quiet."

"W-what's Shemya?" You bite your lip.

"It's better that you don't know." The Captain clasps his hands together. "Now what did you come here for?"

"Oh, Constitution? How's she doing these days?" You ask. Pretty much EVERY USN shipgirl knew about the USS Constitution, the legendary undefeated the ship of the age of sail.

"Well, she's still a ship, for starters." The Captain explains. "My god, the media frenzy if SHE were to come back as a shipgirl."

"It'd be pretty awesome, wouldn't it?" You grin.

"And it would cause quite a large number of problems, too." The Captain sighed.

"Excuse me?" You blink.

"I'll explain later." The Captain shakes his head. "Anyways, the Constitution has just completed her restoration effort, which the Navy naturally did not halt for morale and propaganda purposes. And now, again, for morale and propaganda purposes, the President himself plans to attend the unveiling ceremony where she puts out to sea for the first time in years."

"Oh wow." You blink. "And how are we involved in that?"

"Oh no, this ceremony will be held at Boston Harbor, one of the most secure ports on the East Coast." The Captain assures you. "Your participation will largely be ceremonial only. Actual protection will be handled by other assets."

"Huh, I see." You nod. "So its' just gonna our task force?"

"It appears so, yes." The Captain nods. "Even with Midway in our control, the Pacific is far from being pacified, and the Abyssals are already making moves that appear to be preparations for a counterattack. We can't afford to keep shifting our resources out of the region."

That choice more or less affected what the core cast was going to be and with Anon mindlessly focusing on "Taffy 3!", doomed the quest to have DDs as the only consistent characters.

Though that being said there's also Merc's tendencies to focus far more on dice than character interaction.

I think that's more of a logical consequence of having a setup that goes "fight for two or more threads, social time for one thread or two threads".

And I wouldn't mind sessions or side-stories that focused on other ships across the Pacific. Like, the current events as seen from people who we could've picked at the beginning.

"Really." The Captain raises an eyebrow. "This isn't meant as a way to make me sweat?"

"Well, first things first, you have to admit, North Carolina is not exactly the the most... 'effective' girl in the fleet, compared to Iowa." You say rather delicately. "So if we're gonna have to transfer a ship, it may as well be her since it'll have the least negative effect on overall fleet strength."

The Captain looks at you long and hard, unsure of whether to interpret your reasoning as sound or as an unintended insult against North Carolina.

"C'mon, it makes sense!" You insist.

"It does." The Captain sighs. "I'll keep that in mind. Dismissed."

You decide to head over to the harbor, where you can see Portland and San Diego hounding Kidd down an aquatic obstacle course, which mostly consisted of a number of floating buoys one had to crisscross through, in order to test speed and maneuverability. However, in this case, San Diego was gently sailing along, pouring endless streams of 5 inch gunfire in long, gentle arcs into the water around Kidd as she tried to clear the obstacles.

Of course, San Diego didn't seem to be actually trying to HIT Kidd, nor was she actually fire live ammo. You suspect it was all just a stunt to make Kidd sweat.

"Come on, Kidd!" Portland tutted as she sailed along, arms crossed. "I've seen Liberty Ships dodge gunfire better than that! Don't be afraid to push your boilers!"

"This... this ain't very pirate like!" Kidd wailed as a near miss splashed water all over her, forcing her little pet bird Pepe to fly off her hat in fright.

That was... certainly extreme.

Sort of a last minute realization, but this upcoming event is going to be broadcast live across the nation, right?

And that means we'll be on camera, which in turn means that people know what we look like.

I hope Woel changed her appearance enough.

Woel is pale and white-haired, Hoel is normal colored with red hair. At best, people will think that Woel is Hoel's REALLY goth cousin.

I guess it's either >>47246573 or people trying to figure out which ship girl she is at worse, and start asking questions. Then again, there are a lot of Fletchers...

Well, it was better to prepare her here than in the middle of a battle, you suppose. Up till now, Kidd had never been in a full scale battle, only picking off relatively weak Abyssal raiders or stragglers that managed to escape USN patrols.

"Hoel! Heeeeelp meeeeeee!" Kidd pleaded as she zigged and zagged between a particularly tight shell spread.

"It's for your own good." You say matter of factly. "Sweet Pea here may be a hardass, but she's got the right idea."

"Mhm." Portland purses her lips. "Is that why I never see you turn up at YOUR training sessions?"

Oh crap.

"Hah! I'm already battle tested, battle proven!" You boast.

"Uh huh." Portland slides to a stop. "Well then let's see how much of those skills you've retained, eh? San Diego, cease fire!"

"Ceasing fire." San Diego confirms with a wistful smile as her dozen 5 inch guns finally stop their continuous fire, smoke rising from the numerous barrels.

"So how about a quick competition?" Portland grins. "Just you and Kidd, and see who's learned more!"

And it's not even a contest. You boilers, even starting cold, just simply blaze through the water as Kidd struggles to keep up, and you pass the finish the finish a good eight second ahead of her.

"N-no fair!" Kidd pants. "Ya were still fresh, ya fish licker!"

"You think the Abyssals are going to wait for you to catch your breath?" Portland tuts.

"Yep! You just gotta learn how to make the best with what you got!" You wink.

"Well, at least your boilers didn't explode." San Diego grins. "Kinda like what happened to Hoel on her first day."

"No shit?" Kidd's one eye widens as she looks at you. "Is that true?"

"Ehhh, kinda." You look away embarrassed.

"Ahahahaha! I would've loved to see that! Kidd cackles, and Pepe starts to chirp in unison with her.

"Yeah yeah, laugh it all up." You grumble. "You all at least better behave in front of the President."

"Oh my." San Diego puts a hand to her mouth.

"W-what?" Portland's face pales.

"Oh boy, are we gonna kidnap him?!" Kidd asks excitedly. "Think of all the ice cream he'd be worth!"

Damnit, Kidd...

Do they still call in the Bad Dudes if he's kidnapped by a pirate instead of a ninja?
