>inb4 "Sentinel runs this and then doesn't run ever again" again

- - - - - -

The canyon is deep, dark and narrow. Hundreds of metres above you, your squadmates stand on the lip, skylined against the dawn. And before you, embedded into the base of the rockface, is a sheer, featureless metal wall, somehow more vibrant than steel, somehow exuding a light of its own. A perfectly angular square tunnel bores into the rock, emitting a blue glow from no visible source.

"That tunnel is not a natural formation," you say.

You are newly minted Sergeant Dan Churchill, ODST, and currently the boss of this little ground team. You and your Rookies, Erika Lund, have just completed a drop from orbit. Complications have forced you to land at the bottom of this deep canyon, while the rest of your squad have landed at the top.

"What the hell IS that?" asks Levern 'Lancer' Kendrick, your heavy weapons specialist.
"No idea," you reply. "We should probably find out. Dispatch, are you seeing this?" There's dead air. "Dispatch? Captain Becker?"
"We're reading them up here," says Matilda, your Spartan-III. "The canyon might be blocking radio signals. We're routing your feed up to them, at any case."
"What do they want us to do?" you ask.
There's a pause as Matilda relays your query. "Captain Becker says investigate it, obviously. She's being tight lipped about the details, but she says this is big and it's not Covenant."
"Did she just say 'not fucking Covenant'?" Erika asks from beside you.
"That's exactly what Captain Becker said," Matilda replies. "But a lady mustn't swear."

"Right then," you start. "What are our options here? Can you guys get down?"
Moana answers you. "We didn't bring jump packs, so it'll take us a good twenty minutes to rappel down this rockface safely, maybe more."
"I could jump," Matilda tells you. "I've had worse."
"Well I ain't jumping," Lancer says. "Even then, I've got a lot of delicate kit up here. Wouldn't do to drop it."
"The same goes for me," Moana mentions.
Erika breaks in, tentatively. "Uh, Dan, you might want to think about the signal blocking thing. Maybe we shouldn't all come down here at once."
"Good call," you tell her.

"Alright, Doc, Matilda, you two get down here. Lancer, you stay up there, keep a lookout and stay our link with dispatch."
"Got it, Boss," says Lancer.
Doc and Matilda begin their descent, but it's when they're about halfway down that you get the call.
"Hey, Churchill, I got a call from Dispatch." Lancer says. "They say that there's increased activity on the IR feed around the Covie landing site. Looks like a medium sized spacecraft and about a... uh, battalion of Covenant troops. They say that we can expect contact soon. Shit!"
"Alright, don't panic," you say as Erika looks around nervously. "They give us any estimates on strength?"
"Uh, hang on," Lacer replies as he relays the message. "Hummel says that, uh, according to their 'intel take', they think that these guys are reservists protecting a bunch of eggheads. Haha, great!"
"Nothing a Spartan can't handle," Matilda chimes in.
"She's right," you say. "It's nothing we can't handle."

"Uh, Boss," Lancer says abruptly. "They're, uh, saying that there's a fucking, uh-"
Matilda breaks in. "There's a Covenant scouting party leaving the landing site. Two Banshees and a spirit. ETA in five."
"Yeah, that. What do we do? What do I do?"
"We can't hide those pods," Doc says.
"There's a hole I could hide in, but I'm up here all alone, guys," Lancer says fearfully.

>Everyone get a place to hide, now. We'll need to wait for them to leave.
>Lancer has a laser, right? He's meant to be the best, so he should prove it. Get the rappelees to join him.
>Get all three down into the canyon, ASAP. Forget safety, you need speed.

Hiding from Covies doesn't ever help unless you have stealth tech.

It's a damn shame that they all have superior senses of smell, well at least the ones who matter.

Hey, this is my first ODST thread.

Where are we?
Because I refuse releasing flood, and a bunch of those forerunner fucks liked keeping leftovers.

"Fuck it," you say. "All of you, get down here now! Forget safety, it won't matter if you get flash fried by plasma."
"Roger that!" Lancer says as he hooks up another rappel line. "I'll try not to break my neck."
"Clear the deck," Matilda says suddenly.
"What?" you ask.
"You two get clear, I'm gonna jump."
"Whoh, whoa, hang on," you start.
"It's already too late," she interrupts, and you see her jump. You grab Erika and push her back, giving Matilda room. The spartan sails through the air, hitting the ground hard and making a perfect three point landing. Her shields flare out with energy and dissipate, sending and electric tingle over your skin and suit. Matilda stands, shaking her her wrists and dancing on her toes.
"Oof, that always does a number on me," she says. Her shields begin to reform.
You can't help but ask. "You uh, ever have to worry about running out of battery, for your shields or something?"
"Nope," Matilda says. "Suit's got a fusion core in it. This baby can run for thirty years."
"Oh," you reply. You feel, rather than see, Erika blanch behind her silver faceplate.
"Some of us don't have quite so fancy a suit," Moana says as he reaches the ground.

The four of you stand ready, waiting on Lancer. "Hey buddy, hurry it up, will ya?" you say over the comms.
"Hang on guys," Lancer says, holding his descent. "They're sending me a message, but it's patchy. They say they've intercepted a transmission. Something about another scout party leaving the uh, the abode? I have no idea what they're talking about, they haven't translated it properly."
"Alright, Lancer, but we can worry about that after you're on the ground."
"Dispatch says this shit is important. The Covenant are saying that they need to protect a, uh, holy one? And that-"
"Banshees!" Erika interrupts.
"Fuck!"
The banshees crest the lip of the canyon, diving in. They spot Lancer immediately, hanging onto the side of the cliff face, and zero in.
"Fuck fuck fuck!" Lancer curses. You and your teammates open fire on one of the banshees, causing it to change course, but the spirit soon follows them, and gets you in its sights. It opens up, causing you to scatter.

"Lancer!" you cry as the banshee begins to open up. Lancer loops his line around his legs and holds onto it with one hand, while his other hand grabs his laser. He hangs upside down from the line and takes aim. The banshee spews plasma around him, and you can see the fuel rod emitter glow green, preparing to fire.
But Lancer's goes off first.
The laser blinds you and lights the canyon up in red. The beam pierces the banshee, superheating it and causing it to explode into brilliant blue plasma, raining burning chunks onto the canyon below.
"Yahoo!" Levern cries as he begins to slide down the canyon wall. "Aw fuck, they got my rappel line with plasma, I'm going to fall!" The line does snap, before you or anyone else can do anything about it, but Lancer manages to grab another line and slow his descent. He bounces off the wall and rolls along the ground, but gets up quickly, laser in hand.

Lancer begins charging his laser to fire another shot, aiming squarely at the spirit dropship, but its pilots see, and make the wise choice to back off before they become barbecue. The other banshee buzzes off.
"Dispatch, can you hear me?" you try. You're greeted by nothing but dead air on that channel. "Alright everyone, we're off the air and on our own, no one to help us. It's our natural environment."
"What now, Churchill?" Matilda asks.

Throw a booby trap or 2 to fuck with the covies.

I think Matilda went off course intentionally, while we went on a BS assignment and fucked off as a distraction.

"Air support is going to be back, and with reinforcements. Not much we can do about them stuck down here and that laser doesn't have charge forever. Only way left is forward. Let's move out."
Everyone takes the chance to check themselves and rearm before heading off towards the tunnel. You only used half a mag for your battle rifle, so you're in no way hurting for ammunition.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60PkxEg7O4k

The pink of dawn soon gives way to the clinical metal of the strange tunnel. It's well lit inside, though there are no visible light sources. The walls themselves seem to be glowing with a blue light, entirely evenly across their surface. Not having a defined shadow begins to unnerve you. Despite being clearly some sort of metal, the walls seem to dull and absorb all sound, rather reflect and echo like you would expect. This place couldn't be more alien than it is now.
The hall stretches for several hundred metres, then makes a right angle turn to the left. Another turn back to the right comes soon after. The tunnel is wide enough to fit a scorpion tank, with room to spare. Ahead, you see some sort of massive chamber, brightly lit in white rather than blue you're standing in. To your left, a smaller tunnel branches off, leading to places unknown.

"This place gives me the creeps," Erika 'whispers', only audible through your commlink. You nod slightly, agreeing with her. You just feel too out of place here.
"We're too exposed," Matilda says. "There's no cover, nowhere to hide. We need to get out of here, fast."
The distant hum of engines greets your ears, amplified by your helmet audiophones.
"Spirits," Doc says. "Not sure where they're coming from with these walls, but I know it definitely isn't from down there." He points towards the side tunnel.

>We'll take the side tunnel, hopefully it'll be less exposed.
>It'll be safer somewhere where we can get lost by virtue of scale. Head for the massive chamber.
