Previously you and some of your crew enjoyed a pleasant dinner together, discussing various topics including Tabby's violent ideals and how Rei and Kei could teach her to control her temper and focus her mind. You agreed, though a little worried you could be giving someone with rage issues a way to express them.

Afterward you caught sight of a strange woman watching you, which lead to discovering she was a spy sent by Kakei to keep tabs on you and "deal" with you if your actions disagreed with the city's well-being. This quickly became a chase, where you caught the girl, but learned nothing new. You did figure out some words you'd like to have with Kakei, though.

After that you had a meaningful talk with Tabby about her motivations and aimless hate, agreeing that she had some things to work out, and that the twins would help her with that. But despite this, she still wishes to be the one to pull the lever that ends the lives of the bandits that made her a slave.

Welcome back to Beast in the Sky Quest!
>>
You awake in the morning to, thankfully, no intrusive mechanic prodding you. It's a new day with new possibilities. Today marks the day of the public execution of the bandits you captured, which should be in a few hours from now if your clock is right. You still haven't discussed letting Tabby do it with Kakei, among other things you want to get off your chest. He should be in the palace by now.

What do you do and who do you bring?

You decide to head to Kakei's and exchange "pleasantries". This spy shit won't fly. Also, you guess, you did promise Tabby she could kill bandits...but mostly it's the spy/assassin thing.

You gather up Rei and Kei and have Tabby join you as well. She aught to see this. She's either found or had Weiss make some vague semblance of light body armor using leather and a few bits of metal. You try not to roll your eyes at her attempt to look "threatening" and "tough" considering she still has the cute, freckled face of a rich girl who's never been in a fight in her life. Still, whatever makes her happy, you guess.

You make your way to the palace, asking about how best to deal with Kakei on the way.

"He is not an unreasonable man like his brother." Rei insists, "He is more than willing to listen to the complaints and grievances of others. He is a wise man with much experience in being the mediator for difficult problems."

"Isaac, please don't think too harshly of him." Kei chimes in, "He does what he must for the good of his people. He means no disrespect toward you, nor do I doubt he would ever intend to use force without any due reason or at the very least talking to you first."

Tabby just rolls her eyes.

You arrive at the palace, the guards letting you through without any fuss. Some of them eye you uncomfortably, you assume they're mostly the same ones that worked here prior, but none say anything and go about their duties. The doors to the "throne" room swing open and you are met by the sight of a dozen stewards running about the room, carrying boxes and paperwork, taking dictation or just generally being busy. Kakei himself is behind a large wooden desk, sorting through documents and signing various forms. He looks a little tired, but otherwise well.

"Ah," he says, noticing you after a moment, "Isaac. I...had a feeling you'd be here...please." he motions to a chair across from his desk, "How can I help you?"

What do you say?
>>
>>47088815
Yeah how about we skip the pleasantries today. So what's this about having me spied on and the fact I'll be killed if I somehow threaten Ao? If you even took the time to talk to these two you'd know that isn't how I work. Anyways Tabby here wants to pull the rope you don't have any objections do you?
>>
>>47088975
This minus the skipping pleasantries. Pleasantries are important. Otherwise you're not very pleasant.

Basically this but less rude sounding.

"I actually A LOT of grievances about meeting your little employee last night. Seriously, if I really had cause to do harm to this city, I'd have had more than enough reason to do so when your brother was sitting in your seat. Didn't do it then, won't do it now. Just not my type of gig. Well its not like I don't understand your concerns but hearing of a sword of Damascus above my neck for a hypothetical future offense... well that rankles quite abit. Well in any case, let me put it out there. I have no intention to do harm to the good city of Ao except in self defence."

"Yeah how about we skip the pleasantries today." you say, choosing to remain standing, "So what's this about having me spied on and the fact I'll be killed if I somehow threaten Ao? If you even took the time to talk to these two you'd know that isn't how I work."

The girls shift a little uneasily at this. Tabby is just waiting a little impatiently. Kakei is being patient, waiting for you to finish quietly.

"Seriously," you continue, "if I really had cause to do harm to this city, I'd have had more than enough reason to do so when your brother was sitting in your seat. Didn't do it then, won't do it now. Just not my type of gig. Well its not like I don't understand your concerns but hearing of a sword of Damascus above my neck for a hypothetical future offense... well that rankles quite a bit. Well in any case, let me put it out there. I have no intention to do harm to the good city of Ao except in self defense."

Kakei nods respectfully. "Yes, Isaac, I understand completely. You are, essentially a hero to this city. You are every bit as responsible for the freedom of this city as I am. No, moreso. Had you not come along when you did, we could very well still be stuck here dealing with my brother. For that, I cannot put into words how grateful I am to you. But, you must understand my position. You are, for all intents and purposes, a pirate. You operate outside the law and government. You have a stolen ship and dangerous comrades. People in your position are not known for their honor or trustworthy natures." Kakei shuffles some papers together and hands them off to one of his assistants.

(cont)
>>
"While I believe your good nature and trust you completely, you have to realize, my people are not so easily swayed. Should word get out that a yet unknown and frankly mysterious pirate with a lot of power in his pocket currently has the city in his debt, I will need assurance. The people will want to know that you're being watched and can be 'neutralized' if you decide to stop being so friendly. There's much more to keeping the peace than you may realize, Isaac. Heroes can seem as villains and vice versa to the wrong eyes. I apologize that it must be this way, but I need to think of my citizens first and foremost. I can assure you, you have no need to fear a knife in the back at any time while you are here. I am well aware of your intentions and have no qualms with you. You are free to do as you wish here, but should the need arise, I need a contingency, should the people become worried. And...there's also the chance that should you not be watched, individuals who don't agree with your presence may attempt to do you harm. My employees are looking out for you as much as they are the city. But I see you are still unhappy. Is there any way I could assuage your anger at this?"

"Well..." you begin, thinking carefully, "Tabby here wants to pull the rope on the bandits. You don't have any objections do you?"

AM was this the time you set a DC to 95 just to see what would happen?

Kakei folds his fingers together, thinking for a moment. He eyes you, then Tabby, then the twins, then back to you. He sighs heavily, closing his eyes for a short moment.

"Isaac, you know that the ones in that position are trained heavily for that job." he says, watching you carefully, "It is no small feat to end someone's life and stay mentally sound. Even moreso for this many men at once. It's not so simple as simply letting-"

You stare him down, Tabby joining you. She seems to be getting into it now. You fold your arms and refuse to blink before he does.

He lets out another sigh. "I understand...if this is what it takes to smooth things over, it is a small price to pay. But, miss Tabby, was it? I hope you understand what you're asking. This kind of thing can haunt you. Leave scars that never heal. Many men have broken down from having to do this. The weight is a great one to carry."

Tabby scoffs, putting her hands on her hips. "Scars build character. Besides, I have more than my fair share of demons to deal with, a few more won't kill me." she smirks at this, putting on her best "apathetic pirate" aura. But still, the girlish, unmarred face of high breeding and a lifetime of pampering ruins that attempt.

"Very well, then." Kakei says, calling over one of his assistants, "We have some preparations to make. Please follow my assistant here, Tabby, he will take you where you need to go to get you ready. Isaac, I hope this misunderstanding is water under the bridge for now. But for the time being, I have much to attend to. So if you don't mind and have no other urgent matters to attend to, I shall see you at the execution later." he bows, the girls returning it in kind. Tabby is led off by the assistant, throwing back a thumbs up to you as she leaves.

Well, you got things sorted out...for the most part. You still have a short while before the execution, will you go anywhere/do anything before that time, or would you like to simply fast-forward to then?

The time for the hanging has come. You, Rei, Kei and a little over-enthusiastic Ruul head to the center of the city to watch. There, on top the largest wooden execution platform you've ever seen, is Kakei, a man in an important-looking outfit you assume is the official for this little event, a line of bandits with nooses tied around their necks (and more waiting their turn below) and Tabby wearing a black hood waiting at the lever. She looks antsy to get started.

The official begins. "For the crimes of theft, murder, assault, human trafficking, kidnapping, rape, drug trafficking, breaking and entering..." the list goes on for a while, the looks on the people's faces ranging from fury to disgust. The bandits all seem to have a mix of rage and smug pride on theirs. "These men have been found guilty, and have been sentenced to hang from the neck until dead. We, the people of Ao, under the Porphyran government of Prism, wish you better luck in the next life..." he turns to Tabby, nodding, "Begin."

A quick tug of the lever and the first group of men drop, the twang of several ropes snapping taut echoing through the whole area as people gasp. The men die almost immediately. The next group are brought up and the scene begins again. Pull. Snap. Gasp. Then again, but with less gasping this time. The people can't get much more shocked. Tabby, however, is breathing hard, her hand holding the lever shaking in anticipation for the next group. She almost jumps the gun the next time, but quickly catches herself.

A short while later and the show's over, all the bandits are dead...or...should be. You realized something as you watched; where was Neil? You're not too close, so making out the faces in detail isn't easy, but you're pretty sure you could've picked him out of the crowd...

(cont)
>>
Tabby is gripping the lever tightly, her breaths ragged and heavy, but she is remaining standing straight. The bodies are wheeled off and the crowd disperses. You could see to Tabby and make sure she's okay, or you could catch up to Kakei and inquire about Neil. He's in a bit of a hurry, heading off toward the palace, so you'd have to run to stop him and leave Tabby to her own devices for now.

Which do you do?

You instruct the others to see to Tabby and make sure she's alright, then take off running towards Kakei. Once again, he has more to answer for.

It takes some running and some squeezing through crowds, but you make it to him, stopping him before he can get too far. He turns suddenly, but relaxes when he sees you.

"Isaac." he says, "I'm sorry, but I'm still very busy. Getting everything up to speed is a lengthy proc-"

"Where's Neil?" you ask bluntly.

"I'm...I'm sorry?" Kakei replies, confused.

"Neil." you repeat, "The bandit's leader. About my height, scars, tattoos, total asshole. Filthy...everything."

"Ahh, I'm sorry, Isaac, but that's a little vague." Kakei says, confused, "They are bandits, after all."

"The one with the nicest outfit and best gear." you say, realizing your folly.

"Oh...oh!" Kakei's eyes widen a bit, "I believe I know who you're referring to! Yes...that one. The man was rather unpleasant. He was very noisy, obnoxious and rude. But, unfortunately, he passed away in his cell. The medics weren't sure what caused it, possibly disease or even suicide. We weren't really going to bother with an autopsy. A dead man is a dead man, though just to be sure we scrubbed his cell clean in case he was contagious. He's due to be burned with the rest of them today."

That's...weird. He didn't seem sick when you spoke to him...the picture of health, in fact, if not a little gross...maybe it was as much a surprise to him?

"I'm sorry you couldn't see him brought to justice, Isaac, but he's still dead at least." Kakei says, smiling and patting you on the shoulder. "Tabby did a fine job. I do hope she'll be alright after this, though. You should go see to her. Have a pleasant stay here, you deserve to enjoy it after your deeds."

You could go check on Tabby, but something doesn't sit right with you on this Neil issue. You could try demanding to see the body from Kakei, though you're not exactly a doctor. Who knows what you could learn from it?

You head back to where your crew was, though they've moved to one of the alleys nearby where Tabby has removed her hood and is sitting on a box. Her eyes are bloodshot and it looks like she's been crying, but the look on her face looks quite the opposite. She's smiling. Almost...euphoric, even.

"How is she?" you ask as you approach, taking a seat next to her.

"She's...um..." Rei says, her face reddening a bit, "She's fine..."

"She-" Ruul begins, but is silenced by a kick from Kei.

"She's fine." Kei parrots.

Tabby seems unable to speak for herself at the moment, her breathing heavy but not labored. She runs her fingers through her hair and wipes her mouth off. Blood?

"She bit her lip during the executions." Rei says, noticing your confusion, "It was...an intense experience for her."

"She-" Ruul is silenced again by a kick from Kei.

Tabby notices you finally, and with a sleepy, out-of-it look on her face, she finally speaks. "That was the most incredible moment of my life, Isaac. I can't...oh my god." she runs her fingers through her hair again.

"She's blood drunk." Ruul finally says, dodging another kick. The twins scowl at him. "She's like WAY into killing those dudes. She bit her lip 'cause that shit was like sex to her STOP KICKING ME!"

Oh... "Wait, that can happen?" you ask, confused.

"Rarely." Kei answers, "We've seen it before with some of the younger assassins after their first kills. They become...enamored with the act. It can be treated, but will take a lot of time and effort...but if ignored, can end badly."

"I...uh..." you say, unsure of how to deal with this situation, "Well...I can take her back to the ship, I guess...but I had something for you to do. A little espionage, I guess." the twins straighten up, nodding. "I need you to sneak into the prison and make sure Neil, the bandit leader, is dead. Apparently he died under 'mysterious circumstances', but I don't buy it...something's off."

They eye eachother for a second, but nod again. "We'll make sure he is. But, Isaac, I don't think Master Kakei would lie to you..."

"I'm not exactly in the most trusting mood right now with him." you say, "I'd rather make sure. If that guy's still alive or something, that could be bad for us."

They bow. "Understood." they say in unison, rushing off down the streets.

But now the problem with Tabby, who is currently in how own little world of murder and very unsettling addictions. What should you do? Take her back to the ship? A doctor? Wait for her to snap out of it here?

You help Tabby to her feet, who has gone almost totally limp, only barely able to stay somewhat upright. You make for the ship, but the going is slow and the addition of Tabby occasionally mumbling and her head lolling against you while she coos only serves to make it a little more difficult. You'd think it would be like bringing a drunk friend home after a night of heavy drinking if not for the near constant grumblings about killing and "watching them die". Honestly it's pretty unnerving.

You manage to get her "home" and into her bunk, her fellow freed slaves demanding to know what you were doing. A long, uncomfortable and frankly embarrassing explanation later and they are only more confused. Still, they eventually nod in understanding, though they still eye you suspiciously.

Ruul has gone back to the maintenance of the ship with a spring in his step, no doubt off to tell what happened to Wella to torment the poor girl. You're about to leave when Tabby stops you, giving you what you can only liken to "bedroom eyes". Which would be a little hot if it weren't for what she said next.

"I w'nna do it aga'n. Y'could hear'm crack e'ry time..." she points to her neck, snapping her fingers in a slow rhythm. "Crack." snap, "Crack." snap. She grins at this. This only draws a horrified look from everyone else in the room.

"Yeah I gotta...go check on...twins..." you stammer out, backing away slowly. You whisper to Weiss and Tia to watch her and keep her in bed until she sleeps this off. And to come get you if anything happens.

You doubt she'll go on a killing spree or anything, but you post a guard by the door just in case.

You head to the bridge and wait anxiously for the twins' return, pacing, sighing, fidgeting and just generally being nervous. Things are going south a lot faster than you're comfortable with.

Eventually they do make it back, kneeling before you and bowing their heads. "Sir." they say together.

"We were able to make it inside and find where they were storing the bodies." Rei begins, "But we couldn't find any trace of Neil."

"The records show him as deceased," Kei continues, "and the cause of death is listed as unknown, as you were told, but the body was not in the storage room or anywhere else we could find. It had been a while since anyone had logged entrance to the area, so it's safe to say the bodies have been unattended for a while and that no one is aware of this fact."

"So...he's gone?" you ask, concerned.

"It appears that way, sir, yes." Rei says, "I am sorry. We accept any punishment you may have for failing our mission."

"Wha...? No, no, it's fine." you say, "I'm just...bodies don't go missing for no reason...I don't like this..."

Things keep getting worse...

You could radio Kakei and inform him the cadaver is gone and, if he was being truthful, could aid in the search. Or, if he's been lying to you, he could go on the defense and you'd lose the element of surprise. As it is, he doesn't know that you know the body is gone.

You don't trust Kakei just yet. If he's behind this, telling him you know would only hurt you if he was planning to fuck you over. Again.

"So, Tabby is in her room." you say to the girls, "Think you could go check on her? I want to make sure she'll be okay and I don't think Weiss and Tia are the best for watching a crazy...uhm...mentally compromised person. I'll give you free reign with her, just...bring her back down to earth, alright? I feel a little guilty for what happened. I should've told her no, but...y'know, hindsight is twenty-twenty."

They nod. "We'll do our best. She'll be fine, sir."

The two walk off after bowing, leaving you to your thoughts for now. Piracy is a hell of a lot harder than you thought it would be. You figured it'd be more gunfights and fighting the law than moral quandaries and damaged psyches.

At least the rest of your crew seems...stable. You have some more downtime. Would you like to check on anyone or maybe head into town? Wong does still have that job he offered you. You could also perform a sweep with some trusted crew to try and root out any spies among the Aoan ranks.

This is like the lowest d100 I've seen you guys ever roll.

You have Wella join you, hoping her keen attention to detail can help you. Plus you're pretty sure she's no spy. You once had to check her closet because she thought she heard a rat in it one time, though she admitted it might have actually been a dream.

You head from room to room under the pretense of "inspections", requiring you to fake-chew some crewmen out for sloppy rooms. You admit you don't really care much if they're messy or not, but it's still nice to be captaining.

The men's quarters clear, you head to the women's. You feel a little awkward checking through their things, but you assure them it's standard procedures. Some give you dirty looks, a few understand, and more than a fair amount blush furiously. However, you notice something in the room of some of the ex-ELFs. Four of the girls have fox-tail charms like the ones the spies had...but there's no way they could be spies, could they?

You make a mental note of this, but do your best to ignore them. They were displayed out in the open, so maybe it was a coincidence?

You were wrong. You check a few more rooms and there's actually a rather large number of girls with the same charms. Some have them attached to their belts or in their hair or as an accessory somewhere, or simply hung over their bed. Upon inquiring about them, one of the girls admits the ladies occasionally get together and chat at night. One night it simply came around that they should all find a matching charm or ribbon to wear to show solidarity with one another. Wella sulks at this, as apparently her late nights working on things kept her from even knowing about these little girls nights.

"Some of the girls from Ao said that animal charms are popular there." the woman says, "Rabbit feet, furs, tails and stuff. They showed us some of their own and we all agreed that fox tails would be cute. We got some during leave! Aren't they great?" she says, shaking her hips to make the fox tail wag a little.

This complicates things...

The spies are pretty good at covering their tracks, apparently. Finding out which one or ones might be part of the Nine Tails will be much more difficult. However, this almost cements the fact that there is at least one on board somewhere...

What should you do now?
>>
>>47092282
Get the girls after their done and have them subtlety check the girl dorms over the next two days.
>>
>>47092282
Change from fox tails to something else. Doesn't matter what. Who had the first one?

Any tiebreakers? Or should we go with a "Porque no los dos" type situation?

That's not why you're suggesting it though, is it anon?
>>
You ask the woman if she recalls who was the first one to have the tail was. She thinks on it a moment.

"Ummmm, gosh, I can't recall. There's so many names and faces to remember!" she says, laughing it off, "Maybe...Hitomi? Or...Rio? Oh or...what was her name...Anri? Sorry, captain. I can't really remember...they do have strange names, though. Makes it even harder to recall. Maybe try asking one of the girls from Ao?"

Well, that's not terribly helpful. You shift instead to try and nip the situation in the bud and suggest something a little less morose than animal parts. Maybe bracelets or some kind of animal print thing instead?

"Nahhh, it's fine." she says, playing with her charm lightly, "We don't mind. They're soft and cute looking. Besides, it's something we all decided on. It's got sentimental value! We have a sisterhood thing going on!"

Hell...you could make up a "no fox tail" rule or start enforcing a dress code, though odds are the crew would be none too happy with that. Not to mention it'd give the spies a heads up that you're looking for them and they'd have a chance to hide. Then again, you could just blurt out what's going on and hope for the best. Maybe the Nine Tail would be willing to cooperate?

You thank her for her assistance and tell her as she was. She leaves with a hop, the charm flailing about as she hurries off. This already sucks.

You head back to the bridge to find Rei and Kei. They appear to be finished for now.

"So, how is she?" you ask.

"She's recovering slowly." Kei says, looking a little downtrodden, "I think this has been building for some time with her. With her past, she may have been consumed by this for quite a while. Today was just the first day she's been able to act upon these desires. All the pent up emotions and wants came rushing forward, combined with how much killing she was allowed to do, it hit her hard."

"It will take a while to work through," Rei says, "and she may be a little less agreeable in the meantime, but we're confident she can overcome it. We've seen much worse cases recover. But, um...while we do, there is something very important you must do until she is more in control of herself."

The twins look a little uncomfortable, but they square their shoulders and work through it. Kei quietly whispers to you. "Avoid...ah...amorous contact with her. I understand she may have propositioned to you at some point, but honestly...well...there is a very likely chance any partner she may have is in serious danger of being killed..."

"What kind of person do you take me for?" you ask indignantly, "Why does everyone keep thinking I'm either some kind of lech or gay?!"

They both shrug. "Pirate."

You frown, but brush it off with a scoff. "I'll be careful." you say sarcastically, "But in the meantime, when you're not working with her, I'd like you to do your own sweep of the women's dorms. I'm almost certain one or more of the Nine Tails are on board. The girls have started wearing fox tail charms like they do..."

They give you a concerned look, but nod. "As we've said before, sir, they mean you no harm." Rei assures you, "But this is your ship and you have every right to know what's happening. We'll report back once we've found something. Just be aware, they are very good at what they do. If they don't wish to be found, it will be very difficult to do so."

"I trust your skills will be up to the task." you say, putting a hand on each's shoulder. "But if your old master is fucking with me, there will be hell to pay." you say in a serious tone. They worriedly nod and hurry off.

It's getting a little later in the day and the sun has begun to set. What would you like to do now? Speaking to the crew is still an option, as well as seeing Wong about either the job or searching for Neil.
>>
i think just trying to root them out like this is gonna go a little wrongly. Its best to let the ship be quite isolated and go through tribulations. That will make the spies tend to go more native.

Look into renting a small craft.

Ok, lets go investigate this Neil debacle then.

Actually, I hate to cut things a little short tonight, but I actually have to get to the store before it closes. But thanks to all of you for playing and I hope you enjoyed it! If you had fun, please vote for it on the archive and follow me on Twitter to get updates on when I run! I'll be happy to answer questions about anything regarding the quest once I get back, but if not, thanks for playing and have a good night!

Thanks for running AM.

Man, you guys like to stick your noses on something ya dont belong.

Talk about being pirates
>>
>>47093907
I don't really mind because MC was never supposed to be skilled at pirating anyway.

All this spynoia wouldn't make sense on someone who has more background on pirating, but whatever.
