It is easy to casually dismiss your mortality now, because you've survived so often. You settle down behind her, her tail curling up and out of your way even as you approach letting you know she's fully aware of your presence. You settle with her between your legs as you kneel in a spread-legged seiza position, and you wrap your arms about her shoulders, leaning forward. Placing a kiss on that impossibly soft red silk she calls hair, you simply hold her close, eyes half-closed and relaxing.

You do say several prayers: thanks to Kuraokami for his choice of repayment for Yui-niji-chan's pain; to your sister and Aokigahara itself, for their peace and the appeasement of their hungers; to Amaterasu-Omikami and Rie-sama, for watching out for you and yours. You take your time with them, but even that isn't very long. You're not particularly good at silent prayer.

It's not exactly easy to remain quiet for a while either, allowing Kiku-chan to process whatever strange mixture of emotions that the thought of you meeting your possessed elder sister brought out. Despite the fact that what probably should have happened was something that was meant to happen, something only you could do without world-shaking repercussions (in a very literal sense; the death of Aokigahara might have required a volcanic eruption or a massive earthquake), that doesn't necessarily make it any easier on the ones who bear that guilt, priestess or no.

Maintaining your hug with one hand, you stroke her soft hair with the other, until steam starts to rise from her closed eyes and she begins to shudder in your gentle grasp. A momentary ocean fog sweeps over Mikimoto Island, and Inau-kun silently takes up door guard duty; you don't protest even though she's injured because you don't think there will be further trouble. The fog protects you and Kiku-chan from being noticed as you slip from the temple and leap to a building, then to the top of the wall, returning to the private beach where there are no prying eyes and only the ocean waves and wind to hear you and she.

You settle into the sand, leaving the fog to disperse more naturally, still holding your delicate priestess. She is shivering in your arms, and not because she is cold; you whisper that you are here for her, as long as she needs you, that you will watch over and protect her, not only from those who mean her and hers harm but to ensure that she is respected and revered as a priestess should be. She is your bright spark in the darkness, the flame that guides you and your family on the path to living well. She is the mother of your child, and will one day be teaching your sons and daughters their rightful places in this world and the next.

Her shivering tears devolve into hitching, gasping cries of anguish, and you hold her still, allowing her to relive herself of the pain she's been hiding. The crying is so intense that her boiling tears come too quickly to evaporate, wetting your shoulder.

When she shows no sight of stopping or slowing down, you gently pull her from your shoulder and set her on the ground. Her legs tremble a little, and her tail is a limp length of gold and red, but she tries to choke back her sobs a bit. Seriously, you gently use your thumbs to wipe away her tears, looking into the soft golden eyes of your beloved priestess with your own sapphire ones. Your tail, however, slides up her leg, to wrap lightly along her back, hugging her in place of your arms as she lifts a sleeve to her Cupid's-bow lips. She hiccups softly, her sticky lashes fluttering.

Usually being facetious isn't annoying to the temperamental dragonette, but this evening she seems a little more touchy, a little less together than usual. Not that you blame her after dealing with the spirit of Aokigahara. It might have been years, even decades ago, but the Forest of Suicides left a mark upon her and Er Yin alike. One that you hope you've removed the stain of.

“Well, if you would like me to be technical, when two dragonettes love each....” The narrowing of her eyes is not merely irritation – it's a threat. She is REALLY touchy at the moment. You sigh and gently straighten out her dress, looking down. “I bought a new onee-chan with the most expensive jewel I owned, my love. As I said, I didn't much like the youkai....but I found the parts of my sister that remained worth trying to save.”

Her eyes widen slowly, her pupils spreading.

“You were in such turmoil, and I didn't understand what it was you had sent me to do. So I did what I thought was the right thing to do. So, I helped my sister by using the Wishing Jewel to make her into what she should have been.” You smile and shrug a little. “It did kill me, to an extent, or at least the ghosts did. Your master is very upset at me, and I think I've earned a spanking.”

Kiku-chan is still staring at you, and it's becoming a little unnerving.

You have taught me that.” You draw back, and she gazes at you, smiling and red-cheeked. “Just warn me next time you set me up with a forest pretending to be my sister.” You draw back further, and her hair waves slightly in the breeze of heat that surrounds her. “There aren't any more like that, are there?” you tease, adding a note of uncertainty to your voice.

Well, we didn't promise. Our first priority should be Gin-Gin since her injuries won't heal on their own. If we can get healing for everyone or the gift of medicine at a reasonable cost, then we should do that, but it shouldn't be our primary goal.

With Kiku cradled in your arm and watching the sea got to sleep and the town come to life, you don't answer for a little while. You don't forget what was said, but Er Yin's situation is dire on a level no one else's injuries have been except perhaps yours. You still healed, but you're not a dragonette either. “I am still considering it, very strongly considering it. If I do, I will be much more careful than I'd intended to be, and I wasn't going to be incautious before. Nabiki-onee-chan was very dire in her warnings, so I am seriously concerned.”

Kiku's tail caresses your back. “That is a strange thing to hear from you, but it is nothing that you do not demonstrate.” She's kind of right; you act much more cautious than you sound. Even when you're sure of yourself you act with care. Mostly because you have been awfully final in your solutions in the past. “What did she say?”

You think back. “The Mill Pond Demon isn't just a kappa, and while it might not have been a suicide, there might be a lit of death-curse in its nature too. It is more than it seems, and it might want a sacrifice, rather than just offerings.” She hums softly, and you slide your hands about her waist. You can feel a strange warmth, not a real warmth, but almost a sort of energy radiating from her center. “Now, I know that sacrifices might not necessarily mean human or living ones, but I am kind of worried that in this case those are what is meant. Probably not human though. I suspect, only suspect, that it is an attempt to break up my family, somehow.” You trace the radiance gently, and the golden eyes look up at you.

“I will be a mother again soon,” she murmurs softly. “You made this life, with me. Soon I will be unable to use some of my more destructive powers to protect us, Ryukusa. They will make the baby grow faster than it should, though there won't be any harm to her.” She takes one of your hands in one of hers, and opens her uniform for you, and then places your hand on her belly, her smooth, soft skin. Kiku guides your hand slowly.

“Her head. This is one of her horns. Her back – though this is her tail tip, not hair. This is her leg, and her shoulder. Her tail, warped over her body and around to her back again.” With your eyes closed you can imagine what she is telling you, almost feel the radiation form her belly.

“I can feel her blood moving,” you whisper softly. You can; her powerful little heart thrumming like a hummingbirds, her flood a rushing concourse. Kiku rests her hand atop yours, leaving it against her skin.

It's some minutes before you speak. “How did Nabiki-onee-sama become possessed, Kiku-chan?”

She sighs softly. “I do not know. Er Yin said that she was....she had been touched by sorcery, the Fires revealing that she had been cursed by a spirit of the dead, but that the curse had a source outside the dead. Someone cursed her, but I do not know who it was.”

You relax, remaining with her a little longer, allowing the darkness to become full. You both silently agree that it is time and get up; you fix her clothing and she only just tolerates it; things are quickly becoming normal for her. And you're very glad you could help her with that. She starts to protest when you pick her up but a few kisses and horn rubs later and she's putty in your arms. You're back in the garden in four leaps, and there you set her down, following her from the garden to the temple.

The walkways are well lit, but there are only the last stragglers and the garbage-pickup people around for the most part. No one approaches or bothers you as you reach the temple. Yui opens the doors to allow you in, and the temple is more brightly lit, as more candles have been places. You and Kiku both cleanse yourselves and assist each other, and that nets you a few curious looks, and a knowing smile or two as well.

Ginka is still here, and everyone is awake, though Inau-kun is lying on the futon so recently belonging to Akari and resting while Yuuhi talks to her animatedly.

Recalling Er Yin mentioning what Kiku-chan's last bout of morning sickness was like, you tell Yui-chan that you'll be right back and step outside once more. It doesn't take too long to locate what you need, though you are forced to transplant the tree in the large ceramic pot art the edge of the garden area. Both the tree and the garden need it, the feng shui was a little strong there and needed to be redirected just a touch. You double check to make sure that the vendor who will be receiving the boon of chi in his direction is appropriately healthy, and isn't selling something inappropriate to the gift.

You quickly get the pot, then realize that it has holes in the base for drainage which is useless. Taking some measurements, you then hop the wall once more to some of the rocks that the island is built from. Your left hand makes short work of the relatively soft stone, but the five plugs you make all fit perfectly. Realizing it might be nice to give everyone a treat, you drop by another vendor and pick up some Ramune drinks for everyone, and then head back to the temple.

“Sorry it took so long, Yui-chan,” you apologize when you see her peeking out the door.

“I hadn't shut the door yet, aniki.”

“....gomen.”

You hand her a bubblegum flavored drink and she marvels at the marble trapped in the glass bottle. You drop two more off with Yuuhi-chan and Inau-kun, and then return to the rest of your family, and the new friend who had the misfortune of becoming involved in your life. Unsurprisingly no one asks about the large earthenware pot you're carting around.

Ginka's looking none-the-worse for wear; she's lively and smiling, and thanks you profusely for saving her life, and for introducing her to Ryujin Owatatsumi. It seems like as good an opening as any though.

“About that, Ginka-chan....I am truly sorry for getting you involved in this at all. I really should have been more careful.” she seems confused, and starts to protest, but the look on your face and the guilt on Kiki-hime's and the sympathy in Yui's stops her.

“I'm afraid you have a very hard choice or two ahead of you, Ginka-chan. You see, I am returning home tomorrow with my family, to Shikoku prefecture near Shinjuku district.” that nets a lot of excitement from your family, except for Yui-chan, who nods to you encouragingly. And Akari, who is silently stoic as she drinks her Ramune. You take a deep breath. “You see, the people who are hunting and attempting to harm my family know that you're my friend. So it is with sadness that I must tell you these things....but you are going to have to decide if you can stay here or not.”

She looks at you, worry in her strange red eyes. “What do you mean, Aoi-san?”

You kneel, and begin your tale....
