After a quick dinner of beef and rice, you decide to head up to your room and study. There isn’t much to say about it. Studying isn’t particularly exciting—in fact, it’s rather boring. There’s simply so much work to be done today. Essays for Japanese, practice sentences for English, algorithms for maths, scripture readings for mythology and as for your Persona Manipulation classes…well, they’re basically a free period. All you do is muck about. Half the kids don’t bother to show up. Even the teachers seem to think it’s a waste of time! Why does it even exist?

Halfway across the city, in a prestigious two-story house in the midst of District 2, a young Judgement-user rests in her room. It’s a large room, bigger than any of the other bedrooms in the house. It’s also rather extravagant. The walls are covered with flower patterned lilac wallpaper. Paperback romance novels, expensive and considered to be useless by many, rest on a shelf near her bedside. A miniature fridge hums in a corner, stocked with lemonade and energy drinks of all sorts. That shouldn’t be happening, though. Yet, it can’t be helped. There hasn’t been anyone to share drinks with lately. Rinako would be a candidate, but she prefers tea instead.

Eriko, the student council president, sits on her bed, brushing her hair. She sings a tune, gentle, catchy and speaking of a more childish time away from the pressures of her current world. Elsewhere in the room, something chirps shrilly. She smiles and stands up.

“Ah, the tray is almost empty Here, I’ll get the seed out for you…”

She reaches into the closet and withdraws a half-filled sack of bird feed. She walks over to a birdcage hanging near the window. In it, a fluffy yellow budgerigar roosts, flapping its wings in excitement at the arrival of its owner.

“Christine, you greedy girl…” Eriko hums, fiddling with the cage door. “You can’t get enough, can you? Eat as much as you want, there’s plenty more where that came from.”

The bird squawks as an assortment of seed flows into its feeding trough. It immediately begins pecked at it with its oversized beak. Eriko giggles and goes to place the sack away. “You were always such a greedy eater. How much macca have we spent on your feeding expenses now? Not that I’m complaining. I could never complain about you. You were, after all…”

Her voice trails off. In the silence, the budgerigar stops eating and raises its head. A soft grimace reflects off its beady black eyes. It lets out a small shrill noise that once again catches the attention of its owner.

“Sorry, I got lost in thought." She looks over her pet and laughs again. "Come now, what are you looking so concerned for? You know me, Christine. I’m perfectly fine.”

She shuts the cupboard, then sits down at her desk to begin her homework.

You decide to finally follow the student council president’s hint and go and see what your House Captain is doing. Thus, you head back inside and ascend the staircase to the third floor. The FALCO House office is a few metres down the hall. You locate the door and knock on it.

You wait. No-one responds, so you knock it again. Twice, this time.

Again, nothing happens. Third time’s the charm, the saying goes. It is also the number of raps you knock on the door.

Still nothing. Your patience stretching, you open the door and step inside.

The first sensation you detect is the whiff of lukewarm coffee. It stems from the cup on the desk, a brown pool surrounded by paper white walls. Several other empty cups are arranged next to it. The shutters behind the desk are open, spraying it with bright light and comfortable warmth. Trophies from past events are arranged in cases and on the walls, brass cups, ribbons, hard copy certificates and more. You take another step. Then you notice a hollow, breathing noise coming from the desk.

Yoshino is face down on her laptop pad, twintails sprawled in both horizontal directions, her nose presses against the keys which are typing gibberish on an empty document. She mumbles and smacks her lips as she snores. Her head rolls over, causing a bunch of ‘q’s and ‘a’s to sprint across the screen like a jumbled marathon.

This is a little awkward. How will you wake her up?

You tap her lightly on the shoulder. Part of her stirs and a small grin morphs onto her otherwise exhausted expression. “…twis…” she mumbles.

“Pardon?” You can’t help but respond.

“That twist…” She continues to murmur.

“THAT TWIST!” Her head bolts up, catching you on the chin. You stumble back, crashing against a cabinet, causing a trophy to fall over. “I CAN’T BELIEVE NONO DID THAT!”

“Senpai, what the hell are you saying?” You grumble, cradling an aching chin. You wince. “Ow…”

“Wha—Wakui-san?” Yoshino’s eyes grow wide at the sight of you. “What are you doing here?” Her gaze then falls onto her laptop screen and she shrieks. “My report! It-it-it’s all gone!”

Her following wail could have touched the heart of a banshee. Blinking your eyes to cancel out the pain, you stumble over and press your hand on the laptop keyboard. “Press Control Z.” You say. “It’ll undo everything you typed while you were asleep.”

“Ohhh, right. I forgot about that…” Yoshino quickly goes to work. You take the liberty of pulling up a chair and sit on it.

“Wait, asleep?” Yoshino cries. “What happened?”

“Ask yourself.” You moan. “You were out when I came in. Did you not get enough sleep last night?”

She says nothing, but from her shifting eyes and tight lips the answer is a massive, blaring, resounding yes. She then tries to change the topic.

“So, why are you here, Wakui-san?” Recognition blazes across her features. “Is it because you want to become a House Assistant?”

“I suppose.” Her head leans on the table, looking up at you with slanted eyes. It’s as if all the energy she regained while asleep had suddenly fled from her body. “Hey, you said you wanted to become a House Assistant. Do you know what that position entails?”

“Yeah, I do.” You reply. “I asked around. House Assistants help out with events, meetings and the House Captain with admin stuff when needed, right? It’s not something that’s on a super regular schedule, right?’

“That’s correct.” Yoshino mutters. “I told you not to help last time because you have your own school life to worry about, but now…”

Her words go unspoken, yet their meaning is still clear. For one of the few times in her life, this girl wishes to be selfish. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

“You’re a strange one, Wakui-san.” She mumbles. “Most people would have said no…”

Because, you want to be a little selfish too. But these kinds of relationships benefit both parties, so can it really be called something so negative?

“Okay!” She sits up straight, drains the last of her coffee and discards the empty paper cups into a nearby bin. “If you want to be a House Assistant, then you have to go through an interview. Are you ready?”

“This isn’t going to be something too formal, right?”

“No, not really.” She says. “First question. Why do you want to be a House Assistant?”

You pause. Does the thing you are about to say count as a good quality of yours? The past you would have shied away from this, mumbled something beneath his breath and then limped off to go home. You are more confident now, and only hesitate for a small moment before speaking. It’s not like this is the job interview to become the next emperor of Japan or something.

“I’m good at making friends?” You shrug your shoulders. “I mean, in the past two months I’ve made more friends than I ever had in my entire lifetime. It’s weird, I know, but I guess it means I’m alright socially?”

“I heard you were one of the late bloomers.” Yoshino muses. “Maybe your Awakening gave you a new lease on life?”

It'd probably be the best choice to make sure we are up to it than crashing her hopes with no survivors. It'd assauge her worries a bit, but also give us a taste of what we have to do. REMEMBER; Our schedule is VERY busy as it is and this will be time intensive.

This could mess with other growths we need as well if it's solely social link based and compared to everything else, time is our most precious currency.

You see Yoshino chew her up, contemplating, calculating future schedules, managing the precious currency that is time. Eventually she nods and gives you a small, fleeting smile.

“I accept. Welcome aboard, Takashi Wakui. I look forward to working with you and I hope this turns out well for the both of us.”

You take her hand and grip it firmly.

“Me too, senpai.” You grin.
