A Pod is a type of servo, the same as buying another limb. It has two advantages. First, the pod itself is weighs nothing, and it has a high spaces-to-cost ratio. However, its armor has weight, and if an attack breaches the armor the remaining damage goes straight into the system instead of the structure of the servo. The Knuckle Kaiser can support a pod with up to 14 spaces without penalty.

Wings must be bought in pairs, making them more expensive and heavier for the same amount of weight, but like every servo that isn't a pod systems inside won't be disabled by damage unless targeted with a called shot or subject to the servo itself being destroyed. I will add them to the upgrade bin soon.

It would add 12 minimum to your weight and cost 30 points for the wings and armor (because it would get Officer Armor too) It would grant you an additional twelve spaces. I'm not sure what it would do to your speed, because you'd lose speed from the added weight but gain it from the +100m bonus, although you could always add thrusters to get back up to full.

Adding Wings or a Pod might be required to fit in some of the more advanced systems you all have been discussing, like Remotes or an I-Field.

It's a while before you're able to even make it out of the bridge and towards the infirmary. The technicians and Rhinehawk crew are still working hard, but the pilots are fresh off a victory, have had their first juicy bite of revenge, and are rather raucous. You nearly walk in on at least one couple doing the Zero-G flamenco while trying to find the right room.


The nurse on duty is half asleep when you walk in. She's sitting in a chair outside the door with an autorifle cradled against her chest, in case the 'prisoner' tries anything. It might be a formality to you, but the crew don't know the newcomer and are taking appropriate precautions. Inside, Sam is laying on the cot, on her back, her arms crossed behind her head, looking half asleep. Out of her pilot suit, she's wearing a crisp green and white UJCIDF uniform with a corporal's stripe on the shoulder, with a long-barreled pistol and a slightly curved sword dangling off the discarded belt hanging from one of the bedposts.

"Mmmmph, Roarke?" She sits up, rubbing her eyes and managing a sleepy little smile, "You're not still angry at me for inviting myself along, are you? My S-Betta could be really useful, if you don't plan to just charge in headfirst." She sits up further, drawing her knees up against her chest and wrapping her arms around them to make room for you, "Oh, I met your mechanic already, she stopped in to see if I was alright. We talked for a while."

She exhales heavily, her face becoming genuinely relieved, "Good."

Some hours later, you zip your flight suit back up, put your jacket back on, and kiss Samantha goodnight for the moment. The Corporal, now well and truly in need of rest, is curled up on the cot with a huge smile on her dark-painted lips.

The original shield has been replaced with two, each one slightly more slender and light but with modernized attack-intercept programs to make up for it. Now you'll have a wall of adamant-nanotubing and hyperalloys to protect yourself with in combat.

Karen waves excitedly, pointing out the advanced and complicated system she's replacing the Kaiser's elbows with, before Cornelius shoves his wrinkly face into the frame, "Roarke, if you're going to put thrusters on your arms, next time do it properly! The ones you installed weren't giving you any flying thrust at all, so I fixed that." He smiles genially, pressing a button on a remote that makes twin jets of blue-green flame roar from beneath the elbow armor of the new arms. Apparently the Cohens weren't just satisfied with fixing your damaged pieces, and apparently Karen was listening very closely when you were talking about how nice it would be if you could only punch your enemies to death twice as fast.

There are a few facts of note about Karen.

Years ago, long before you joined the Kestrels, Captain Ozark actually got serious about a woman. Damned serious. She was a hotshot Harpy pilot and the daughter of one of his most valuable officers, and reputedly he might actually have been in love with her.

What's known is that she had a daughter, who Ozark (and most of the older crew) spoiled a little. The pilot herself died due to mechanical failure of her Harpy Custom during a minor skirmish with some PMCs, leaving the kid to be raised by Cornelius.

The first time you saw her, she was a freckle-faced brat who climbed into your Harpy without permission and tried several times to add guns to it until you made it abundantly clear that you don't like using guns. Or missiles. Or melee weapons.

At first you thought she did this to everyone, but slowly came to realize that while she worked on other Harpies, she was the dedicated mechanic for yours. Despite the difference in your ages, she was able to teach you the art of mech repair and design up to an almost professional level through years of working closely together. Your original Harpy Custom was her work, with its dual claws and shields, and you suspect that she's working off the same aesthetic on the Knuckle Kaiser.

Perhaps some girls write love letters, and others build military-grade combat circuits.

It's funny, isn't it, how a flat-chested girl with an annoyingly squeaky voice and a penchant for disregarding safety procedures could grow into a woman who fills out a cheongsam so well?

Normally you'd feel somewhat gauche, thinking about one woman so quickly after sleeping with another, but the talk of a sisterly alliance has you thinking as you clean yourself up and head to the mecha bay to see the improvements for yourself.

"Roarke, I'm up here!" Yeah, that voice isn't squeaky anymore. It belongs to a beautiful woman wearing glasses and smiling affectionately down at you from the Knuckle Kaiser's cockpit, "I'm just finishing some adjustments to the HMIS to compensate for the new arms. You don't look so tall from up here." She grins cheekily as you activate the liftwire, "Oh, you're coming up? Did you want to see?"

Yes, yes you do. This high above the bay, almost all of the other mecha look diminutive, dwarfed by the Knuckle Kaiser. The S-Betta is close but not quite as large, and the Harpies look like midgets. It feels incongruously like being in a treehouse.

There isn't a lot of room in the cockpit. Your chair is comfortable enough, but Karen's in it, her PC plugged into your suit's pilot helmet which is itself plugged into the HMIS. "I talked with your friend, Roarke. She's nice. I'm not jealous or anything, if that's what you're worried about..." her shoulders droop a little, "I just want you to be happy, whatever it takes."

"I'm not here to talk about Samantha." You have to lean over the chair to talk to her, one hand gripping the backrest just over her shoulder, her glasses reflecting the dazzling lights of the mecha bay except where your silhouette blocks them out as she gazes up at you.

"Oh? R-Roarke...you're awfully close...w-what did you come here to talk about?" She softly bites her lower lip.

"Us." You reply, taking off her glasses, folding them up, and tucking them into her toolbelt so they won't get broken.

It's too small for this, but the two of you don't stop for a good, long while. When you're done, Karen nestles into your arms and says, softly, "I've wanted this for years. I do have to finish working on your machine, but...
I want you to hold me for a while."
