My name is Cecile, and I'm sixteen years old. I already thought my life was odd, what with my parents having moved halfway across the country for their new job and leaving me in the care of my older sister... but then my best friend went and had a book shipped to my house that ended up giving me superpowers.

Thanks to Theresa, I was able to get a lead on the next place that Faceless was going to hit. And with the help of her Branch, we successfully snuck into said place and prevented him from stealing this gaudy statue thing...

...but I may have maimed him in the process. I don't know what worse- that I did what I did or that I don't feel any remorse for it at all. Like, I feel gross about the whole "maiming" thing but not really guilty for hurting that asshole like I did.

Roused awake by the rays of the sun, I roll around under the covers a few times until I reach the edge of the bed, then I blindly fumble around with my arm until it finally reaches the nightstand where I left my glasses. It isn't until they're firmly situated on my face that I finally open my eyes.

Comfy bed, check.

Girlfriend, check... wait a minute.

She's sitting perfectly upright in the bed... and judging from the bags under her eyes, it doesn't look like she's gotten much sleep at all. And though seeing her like this is cute in its own way, I still feel kind of bad for her.

"Umm..."

I wave my hand in front of Charlotte's face... and she grabs it.

"What are you doing?" she asks, looking at me with that same "dead to the world" expression that Allison gets after she comes back from those parties she likes to go to.
"Just making sure that you were still with us?" I laugh. Nervously.

And thankfully, she lets go of my hand.

"Really though, is something the matter?" I ask. "I just woke up and you already look like death."
"I feel like it too," she mumbles while wiping her eyes with her arm. "Could barely get any sleep at all on account of worrying about Loki and Rhaccy and Milla and you. And every time I -did- fall asleep, the smallest noise would snap me right back awake."

Oh. Wow.

"Well I could get you some coffee if you want," I say.
"......tea."
"Hm?"
"Tea's better," Charlotte mumbles shortly before breaking into a yawn that brings all her sharp, -sharp- fangs in full view.

Along with morning breath, but I'm not about to mention that.

"Should be some in the cabinet," Charlotte mumbles. "Or just order some from room service if you want. Don't really care."
"Umm, sure," I nod. "Be right back!"
"Mmhmm."

As I hop off the bed and onto my feet, Charlotte just sort of topples over onto where I just was. Now I'm really grateful that I woke up when I did.

Leaving the bedroom, I find the rest of the suite completely silent aside from the sound of birds chirping outside. The curtains over in the living room are shut (presumably so the sunlight don't wake Gabrielle up) and the kitchen is totally dark as well. It doesn't really affect me on account of my weird night-vision eyes, but it's still kind of gloomy.

But eh, no matter. And since I'm sure Charlotte would've leapt to action if anything's happened to Gabrielle or anyone else here so I'll just focus on the task at hand- procuring my lovely girlfriend some tea to help with her current miserable state.

Open the cabinet and get the tea stuff...

...find where the hell the kettle is...

Cover it with a teacup or something once you put the bag in, leave it like that for a few minutes. Steeps it really nice-like.

But if you're too lazy for that, just remember this. Put the sugar in BEFORE the milk. It dissolves better that way.

Loose-leaf tea is good, but you need specialized (or improvised) equipment to do it.
>>
While scouring every cabinet in the kitchen for the kettle, I consider just giving up and calling room service to bring something up... but I dunno, that just seems lazy on my part. Especially when Charlotte's spent the entire night in a miserable state. No, putting forth a little bit of effort to do this the right way is the least I can do for her.

...assuming that I even know what the "right" way is. I really hope that she's got the kind that uses teabags because if it's the loose leaf stuff then I think that needs some kind of weird strainer thing and I'm just liable to make a huge mess trying to fool around with that.

After much, MUCH more rummaging around, I finally locate the kettle. And I don't even make a racket pulling it from its hiding place, go me!

Once I have it out, I quickly get to work filling it with water and putting it on the stove, then I find a couple of cups and get them ready with the sugar and teabags and whatnots. With everything all set up, all I have to do is wait for the water to boil.

I watch the kettle intently. Once on the radio they said that you're supposed to take the kettle off right after it starts to boil so I'm gonna do just that. One hundred percent vigilance, that's me. Nothing shall escape my sight.

Even though I'm nearsighted.

And so, I continue to watch the kettle.

And watch.

And watch.

This is kind of boring.

So as a way to pass the time while not losing sight of my goal, I focus on the light that's being given off by the electric stove's coils... and pop! In an instant, they all turn into multicolored light butterflies!

...though this'd probably go a lot better if the stove was gas instead of electric. Bah.

Carefully, I bring the kettle over to the cup that I prepared a few minutes ago and pour the water over the teabsg that's sitting inside it. Now I think I'm supposed to wait four or five...

"Cecile?"
"Bwah!?"

I spin around and am met with the sleepily adorable face of a certain little sister.

"The heck're you doin' with that kettle? Woke me up..."

"W... want some tea?" I ask.
"Wha?"

Gabrielle stares at me for a few seconds before shaking her head.

"Nah, coffee's better," she replies, walking right past me to the fridge. "I dunno why anyone'd prefer tea..."

Why am I not surprised.

"...but for staying up, this stuff is the best," Gabrielle says as she closes the fridge door and shows me a small aluminum cylinder.
"An energy drink?"
"Uh-huh," she nods. "These're a lifesaver when I have boss raids on Japanese servers and stuff."

She then pops open the lid and chugs it down like a champ. For the life of me I can't understand how- I've had a few while at Mina's house and they taste absolutely HORRIBLE. Acquired taste or not, it's just awful.

For once, the evil voice in my head is actually making sense. Giving up, I turn back to the country and fill another cup with the water from the kettle.

"If you decide to change your mind then feel free to take that one," I say, pointing to the second cup. "I'm gonna get this to Charlotte now since she's like half-dead."
"Eh."

With that, I pick up the fresh cup of tea that I so carefully prepared and carry it into the bedroom where my loving girlfriend awaits.

"........."

Christ she looks creepy lying on her side with her hair covering her face and her eyes half-open. It's like something out of a horror movie.

"Milady's tea," I say, smiling awkwardly while holding the cup out towards her.

"Mmm."

Charlotte slithers off the bed, landing on wobbly feet. Once she's mostly gotten her balance, she drags herself towards me. I -would- have just handed her the cup in bed but that seems to be too much of a risk of her spilling it on the mattress and nobody wants that.

Sorry, Charlotte.

"Thanks," Charlotte says to me with a weak smile. "You forgot the milk though."
"I don't actually know how you like it, to be honest," I shrug.
"Well that was as decent a first try as any," she replies. "and now I'm awake enough to at least somewhat function..." she yawns.

And with that, we leave the bedroom and head back into the main area of the suite.

Charlotte makes a beeline for the kitchen, and I follow right after her. I'm HUNGRY, and you can't start the day without filling your stomach first, right? So that's why I go right for the fridge... and find that it's devoid of anything aside from those nasty energy drinks, a half-empty thing of milk and a couple of Milla's thawed steaks.

I don't know why I was expecting any different, all things considered. I mean, the only time when they'd have had an opportunity to refill the fridge was when I was out with Theresa last night, and Charlotte was likely too worried to do much of anything while that was going on.

"Bleh..."

I let out a long, tired sigh.

"Hey Charlotte," I call out to her as she's in the midst of adding sugar to that other cup of tea that I prepared. "You okay with ordering room service for breakfast?"
"That's fine with me," Charlotte replies. "Gabrielle?" she calls out across the suite. "What do you want for breakfast?"
"Waffles!" Gabrielle shouts back a few seconds before turning the TV on.
"Alright then."

And three cups of tea later, Charlotte is mostly back to her usual self. I have no idea how much caffeine is in that stuff, but it definitely does wonders.

"I'll take care of the ordering," she says.

While Charlotte gets to ordering our food, I make my way into the living room. There, Gabrielle appears to be watching the news while Shary plays with Milla. As for Loki, he seems to have taken Shary's place on Gabrielle's lap.

"Anything interesting going on?" I ask Gabrielle as I take a seat next to her.
"Eh," Gabrielle shrugs. "Just the usual stuff- someone moron tried to break into an old man's house and got shot in the face for it, a couple of barfights, a bank robbery..."

I don't think it's a good thing that those events can be described as "normal." But then again, I don't really have any room to talk.

"Wait a minute-"

I point at the TV just as a very familiar building appears on the screen.

"What's wrong?" Gabrielle asks.
"That's where we fought Faceless last night!"
"Eh? Really?"

We then go quiet as the reporter starts going on about an "attempted robbery" that was supposedly thwarted by the owner's security team. Several members of said team suffered minor damages, but there were no casualties and the "burglar" was said to have sustained heavy injuries himself.

"Uh... so they're talking about Faceless, right?" Gabrielle asks.
"I'm pretty sure, yeah," I reply. "They left out all the major details but I'm surprised that the story ended up on the news at all."
"Really," she nods. "Says he's still 'at large,' though..."

Yeah, and I'm sure that's what kept Charlotte up all night.

"It's weird that they'd actually put it on the news," Gabrielle mumbles to herself. "If it was -my- place that got broken into, I wouldn't want anyone to know. Especially since the police can't do crap about it. It's pointless to even report it, right?"

>how do I respond?
>>
>>46896531
>>how do I respond?
They were probably proud because of how rare it is for faceless to fall. Even if the public doesn’t really know what’s up, anyone who has an idea and watches from the side-lines (like Gabrielle) finds out what happened.

Probably good for their reputation to publicly have beaten the supernatural burglar. Especially, if they don’t mention they had help.

(And it’s good for CC and co because the thief will also think it was the local security. And not, for example, the girl whose home and family he can visit any time.)

I think it over for a couple of seconds.

"Maybe they're trying to rub it in?" I say, shrugging.
"What?" Gabrielle squints. "What's the point of that?"
"Well maybe they're proud that they were able to 'chase him off,'" I reply.

even though we were the ones who did it

"To the average person, it just sounds like an average attempted burglary," I continue, "but to someone in the know like you has a clear understand of just what happened there. So, you know, they can brag about it."
"Even though you're the one who did all the actual work," she rolls her eyes. "I dunno, I'd be too ashamed to try and take credit for what someone else did."
"Well -I'm- not complaining." I say with a shrug. "Them taking the credit for chasing Faceless off takes the heat off of me."
"I guess."

This way, I don't have to worry about him doing something messed-up as revenge. Probably.
