Things have settled now that you are returned home to your beloved fortress. Your advisors are hard at work, either reinforcing you military or stabilizing your economy. The newly instated police in the former Hielonite territories are doing well to keep things in order while your main forces are away, and though there are still occasional upsets, nothing substantial can begin with them on the watch.

Legion is back to his normal routine of training, and gathering souls from the land's condemned. Duncan is weaving your spy network, always diligent. Marigold leads your Hellraisers in even more intense and demanding training, turning them into a tight and deadly machine. Gilbert and Caitlyn are researching more methods to increase your meager but notable magical presence in the world. And Sophia spends her days undergoing physical therapy and managing her new diet, all while contemplating the babe growing in her belly.

Vanessa is still far and away, serving demon lords in the fourth ring, while her mother tries to find a way to free her. But in the meantime, you are searching for the location of three ancient artifacts that Caitlyn believes can grant immense power.

As you rise from slumber once more, you must decide which avenue to focus on.

You tell Duncan, Caitlyn, Legion and Gilbert to pour whatever time they have into finding the rest of the artifacts. While they worry about that, you worry about Vanessa.

The contract that binds her is tight. So tight, the only way to allow her to escape it is to breach it through truly horrible and disgusting methods. She must commit an act that can be deemed 'Lawful Good', at least through the judgment of a jury of her peers. You hole up in your office and contemplate this for a long time, going through all possible plans. You narrow it down to a few.

>Attack Davison, Goldberg and Whoever the Whatever, potentially ruining your relationship with hell
>Plan an elaborate heist, with little to no chance of success

Doesn't work that way, Shen is dead. Cruz' soul was sucked. Very big difference.

No, a corpse is a corpse. With Necromancy you could make something happen, but it wouldn't be a thrall, just a regular zombie without any of Shen's traits or powers, and those aren't worth nearly as many good karma points

You decide that, rather than force Vanessa to perform an act that would hurt her, and rather than risk getting her into real trouble with the underworld, you need to take matters into your own hands. And by your own, you of course mean someone else's.

You dust off your evil rolodex and find the card for the very same lawyer who defended you years ago, when you were trying to secure custody of Vanessa. You establish a connection with the Plane of Immortals, and sit on hold for about five minutes. You are put through.

"You've reached Janet Blanc, Attorney at Law, how may I defend you?"

You try to remain as polite as you can, asking for Blanc's aid in this most arduous of quests. She listens intently, asking the occasional question, and when you finally finish, you can hear paper rustling and a pen scribbling down notes.

"I see. Well, I do have an opening where I might pencil you in, but I have to let you know I've retired from adventuring. As such, my fee will be substantial. I'm thinking something in the ballpark of ten thousand kilograms of platinum. Of course, this will be payable after we recover the asset."

Jesus Christ guys, We're off to a lovely weekend few sessions. We need our EX involved with this shit, she might lift the ban if we do this WITH her. Don't go with the most extreme option without her input on this.

You open a conference connection, including your ex. You disturb her in the middle of a meeting, but when she hears the topic of the conversation, she is more than happy to blow off work for it.

After some shrewd negotiation, she manages to talk Janet down to almost half the asking price, with the promise of keeping her on retainer for a few months and helping her to get in touch with some powerful Archdemons. When all is said and done, Janet casts a sending spell to deliver the necessary contract directly to your desks. You both sign, and the deal is done.

"Thank you, both of you. I'll be in touch," Janet says, cheerfully. She disconnects, leaving you alone in the connection with your ex. An awkward silence follows.

How much she missed you, or wished you were there, or how you took her to some other amazing place and bought her this and that. "Do you have any idea what it's like to look into your own child's eyes and see absolutely nothing? Not even a shred of affection reflected back at you? Huh!? You fucking asshole!"

We can work through this, she is still young, and her emotions are stunted. To say the least. She will grow as a person, and realise how amazing you have been for her, but for that to happen, we need to stop butting heads all the time.

Your explanation is followed by a long, tense silence, and finally a pop in your ear as the connection severs. You tilt your head back in your chair, sigh, and take a minute to compose yourself.

Once you've had a sufficient breather, you decide to get back to work for a while.

After the day's work is done, and dinner is finished, you find yourself with a bit of time to kill before turning in. You haven't seen your staff in a hot minute, so you decide to make the rounds just before bed.

You call forth your hellfire sword and begin taking steps toward the window. Sophia reaches for a small knife once use to cut her fruit for lunch and brandishes it from her bed, while Caitlyn merely scurries behind her.

The window shutters shake just slightly as something jostles them. You approach slowly, ready for anything. When you reach them, you stick out a hand to tap the latch. As it flips open, the shutter swing out to reveal none other than a single raven, perched gently on the sill. It looks up at you, head cocked, and caws lightly.

You hold your sword ready and watch the Raven as it peers around the room. It's tiny black eyes, set in it's feathered head, scan just about every aspect of the area before settling back on you. You watch as its wings spread, and it's beak widens with repetitive and shrill cries. The sound is quite irritating, but before you get upset enough to simply bat the bird away, it takes wing and soars away, flying down toward the ground and then back up and out of sight.

You shut the window and turn back to the others. Sophia seems tense, and Caitlyn seems terrified. You ask her why she's so distraught. She clears her throat before answering.

"Sorry, I just hate birds. They swoop around with those sharp claws and peck at your head, they're awful. And that one especially seemed to exude this creepy vibe."

You tell the both of them to be aware of the creature. After a few more words, you leave and go to inform the fortress guard to keep an eye out for the raven, or others of it's kind, and to inform you if they commit an suspicious acts. The night goes by without incident. You sleep well, as do the others, but by morning things are a bit out of control.

Dozens of the black birds have begun to gather in the courtyard, picking at the bleached and secretly plastic bones tossed around the are for atmospheric effect. The minions try to run them off, but they merely come back down to roost and hop around on their weak little bird legs.

You order the minions to take some meat from the larder and ride with it about a kilometer away form the fortress, keeping it out in the open all the while. Sure enough, the crows take flight and follow. For about an hour, after which they return with full bellies and much stronger cries of defiance.

At this point, Marigold is ready to order the Hellraisers to open fire on the birds just for a moment of silence. You stop her, but only for fear of causing something more troublesome. You try a few other plans, none of which work, until nearly sundown. Then, with the blood red sky making the coal black feathers of the birds really pop, the gates of your fortress creak open just slightly. The minions rush to inform you that a woman has found her way into the courtyard, and the Ravens are going absolutely mental.

You venture down with your Hellraisers, bursting out into the courtyard with a level of anxiety unfelt in ages, and spy the black mass of feathers from across the way. The ravens have gathered together to form some sort of ragged and moving ball, crawling over each other like maggots, crying all the while. The Hellraisers take position to attack should anything happen, but unbeknownst to the lot of you, there is nothing hostile within the mass. Instead, as you approach, the birds take wing and spread in a black cloud, eventually leaving behind but one of their number, who sits perched on the extended arm of a tall, svelte woman in a black lace corset and skirt. She stands elegantly in the middle of the yard, admiring her pet as it cocks its eye at you. When her crimson eyes set in pale skin finally come to aim themselves at you, she smiles, and lifts her arm to send the final bird up into the sky.

"Good evening, sir. I am glad to meet you, truly I am. I am called Morgan, of the Daughters of Velka. I have come to pledge myself to you, body and soul."

Her figure isn't much to write home about, but her posture and delicate, almost doll-like features give the girl an aura of femininity matched by few mortals. You reach our and feel her shoulders, arms, and stomach for anything hidden. She gladly allows you to probe her, even down to her legs. You detect nothing out of the ordinary.

"Out of doors, then. Very well." She pinches the sides of her billowing skirt and kneels in a perfect curtsy. "As I said, I am Morgan, of the Daughters of Velka. If you are familiar with the Outcasts of the Southern Swamp School, you may know us. If not, I will explain briefly. We are an order of nuns, or close to it, who devote our lives to worship and researching medicines. We were deemed heretics long ago, and despite all that we have accomplished by setting aside silly hang ups like morality, cruelty, and empathy, we are still hunted by our former kin. We most often remain in hiding, but while passing through my helpers, the ravens, informed me of a most peculiar development. A woman carrying a babe of most interesting origin had come through before me, along with an army of guards and escorts. And so, for the sake of knowledge, I have come to see to the care and delivery of this child myself. I will charge nothing, I only ask for board, meals, and access to the tools and resources to continue my work. In addition to what I have promised, I will provide one more service. I will help you unlock the mystery behind those... people."

She points past you, toward the troop of Hellraisers, clad in their black and horned armor. They are still poised to attack, unwavering.

If I had to guess, based on the region and the relatively healthy appearance, along with the lack of any immediately apparent parasitic entities, you've got a case of "Iron Will". A species of long stagnated slime. We have a few for study, but the force she exerts, you must have a queen." She looks away from the Hellraisers, and back up to you. "Unless I'm wrong?"

"I won't say anything to them if it pleases you. It's a hard tablet to swallow. But if you give me access to the queen, I can see about breeding it properly. If my sisters and I are right, there is a rather effective method to breed the creatures to obey a single pattern of psionic waves. In simple terms, I can make for you a creature that would render all but the strongest of willed mortals completely under your command. That is, if that sort of thing interests my lord."

Morgan is delighted, and you show her inside. You have someone escort her to the bathes, and then to her chambers, before turning in yourself.

The next morning you introduce Morgan at the meeting, and clue her in on the less vital workings of the business, not wanting to afford her too much information just yet. After disbanding, you turn your attention to her, and the subject of the babe.

"As I said, my helpers keep their eyes and ears open for me. Information is quite valuable for a traveler. My interest in your unborn is pure, I only wish to see what might happen with my own two eyes."

"Forgive me, it's just that most children are so dreadfully boring. Two people fire their genetic material at one another and out pops a little bundle of randomly rolled dice. But this child is different. The father is a giant made of muscle and magical steroids, the mother is the former host of a patron deity, and to have survived the spear of a traitor, exposed to the cruel air of the outside world, starved for days, and as I have just recently come to learn, soaked in untested magical juices by some half trained witch? Forgive me, my lord, but anyone not on the edge of their seat waiting to see what manner of beast emerges from this woman's womb is simply too stupid to live."

Morgan seems disappointed.

"Forgive me, my lord. I did not mean to offend. I only want to express my fascination with this most curious development. I swear to do all I can to insure the safety of the child, you have my word as a Daughter. All I ask in return is the right to observe it's growth and development in the mean time."

"I would expect no less caution from you, my lord. Now, if you might show me to the mother? I'd like to give her an examination personally. I don't mean to imply, but I highly doubt you have anyone in your employ who is qualified to perform these types of procedures with any sort of competency."

You walk with Morgan to the medical wing. Upon arriving in Sophia's room, you introduce the two of them, and inform Sophia of Morgan's desire to help with the baby. Sophia is nervous, but doesn't fight your decision.

Morgan pulls a chair close to the bed and sits beside Sophia, taking up her hand and cradling it gently.

"Don't worry, my lady. I may be prickly, but I keep soft hands. Now, let's see your stomach, so I can assess the damage done."

Sophia peels off her sheets, then raises her gown, revealing toned muscles, and a stomach shredded to bits by five if not six thrusts of a well sharpened spear. You can sense the sorrow and regret in her face as she exposes herself, and the desire to be anywhere but this room as Morgan begins examining her closely.

"It seems the wound was deep. I'd wager your intestines were severed. If that's true, we should reopen you and make sure to remove any objects that may lead to infection. With your permission, of course, my lady."

Sophia turns up to you, red faced and afraid.

Morgan stands, covering Sophia's stomach back up with her gown and sheets. She turns to you and clears her throat.

"My lord, I understand your concern. You fear for your child, and the life of your lover."

"L-lover?" Sophia repeats, raising her hands to cover her blushing face.

"I am, after all, part of a disgraced order of sisters. But rest assured, our vows are carved into our hearts like stone tablets. I will not allow either of them to come to harm, nor can I, through inaction, allow harm to come to them. It is my opinion, founded on fifteen years of study, that this operation is the safest course. Without it, we risk infection, disease, rot, even parasitic infestation." Morgan seems to choke up a bit. She stops talking, places a hand on her chest, and takes a deep breath before continuing. "Please, you need not leave, only allow me to do my work."

She turns back to glance at Sophia, who is back to worried.

"Unless of course, you want to risk two lives for lack of faith."

Sophia agrees, and Morgan thanks her for her trust. She asks for some surgery tools, gloves, and a few thinks such as morphine, antiseptic, and thread.

You stand aside and watch from a safe distance as Morgan sedates Sophia, and then, humming a soft dirge, pierces her scarred and muscled stomach with a razor sharp blade.

Wrapping here for tonight, but I'll be back in the morning. If this thread is still around, I'll use it. If not, new thread!

Thanks to everyone who showed, even if it's slow I'm always happy to write for someone! I know we have a lot more readers than players, judging by the poll, so I hope you all have fun reading this when you come to it.

Have a good one, all!
