You fidget awkwardly, testing your tea to buy time - still too hot, alas. “Well, uh-”

“Tell me,” she says, squeezing your wrist, her eyes imploring you desperately. “*Please.*”

“Well... like Mikasa, I guess.”

She blinks. “What?”

“That's where you belong,” you tell her. “A museum berth. You all do. You all fought your wars, and now... you deserve to rest.”

She blinks. “But... but the abyssals-”

“That's why we *need* you,” you say sternly. “And Christ knows, we need you girls, but - did you really think we wouldn't *want* you?”

“Yes,” she says quietly.

The mug is starting to burn your hand, but you grip it tightly anyways, unable to trust yourself not to slap the blasphemy out of her mouth. “How the-”

She drags her chair closer to you, bumping her knees against yours. “I... I'm going to show you something.”

“... I know all about the faeries,” you say sternly. “And if it's where your planes come from, I don't-”

“That one's so old I don't even bother with the witty retorts anymore,” she says - it almost sounded stern. “Now... just...” she takes a deep breath. “Just... look, okay?” This close, you can see the flush in her pale cheeks even in the dark.

“Shou-” you begin, but she's already turning her face away from you, eyes closed, flush deepening. With her left hand, she pulls down the collar of her loose nightgown, revealing her small, bare shoulder and collarbone. “Shoukaku, what the-”

She takes your captive wrist and presses your hand flat against her collar. Before you can pull away, you feel it - the small spot that throbs with unnatural heat. Yanking your hand away, you see it - it's actually glowing, ever so faintly, soft amber light barely detectable unless you look askance.

“Chrysanthemum,” you whisper softly.

She nods - and swallows nervously. “The Emperor's symbol. It marks me as his servant... his property. Kaga and the rest that fell at Midway... they still had hope of victory, at least. They sacrificed the rest of my sisters as decoys, hoping to get their 'decisive action',” she spits bitterly, “and were humiliated by a handful of tiny gunboats and escort carriers. They were thrown away - for vainglory, for desperate gambles. I don't feel like I held a line, Settle. I was just a tool for the Emperor's glory, and...” she swallows again, squeezing her eyes shut tightly as tears trickle down her cheeks. “And I come back, and only Goto's treated me any different... and you. How am I supposed to believe they won't just... *discard* me, again?”

The words sink deep into your head, vanishing into dark depths like poison pills dropped down a well. You shudder as the pantomime of the abyssal ships plays out in your head again - the eager, cute little shipgirl, battered, bloodied, still excited, still happy and proud to be useful... and the callous, quick way his hand - *your* hand - slashed out her name, before moving on to the next victim.

[ ] ... maybe they have a point. BB-3 was ripped from her museum berth, raped, gutted, and left for dead. Even America's done that to ships that deserved better. How can I shrug them off, when my own charge is echoing their words?

[ ] ... no. No. NO. There's a difference, a line, and it's neon fucking orange. You came back to defend those you loved - even if it was only your comrades, and not your nation. They came back to kill and murder, indiscriminate and wild. They are traitors. Traitors to everything that matters, traitors to everything they once aspired to.

They were built to protect. There was life brought to them, the fires in their eyes. They may either stand and fight with the rightous, or be struck down as the protest vainly against those who remember.

That said, I pitty the poor ships who must be summoned, dragged back from the void, for should they not come, a fate worse that. Hell awaits. When Satan fought God for rule of the heavens, those angels who did not choose a side were cast out, abandoned by both camps. It would be tragedy to see something similar happen if our girls were unable to come of their own accord.

In the meanwhile, the powder keg continues to simmer. The LCS are skirting the edges of the hodgepodge of ships, both to identify them and to stay close without being in the thick of things. Halsey continues to charge north to provide peace of mind under her umbrella- and I realize that the patrol loop for those global hawks is fixed relative to her, so I adjust that to my liking. I've picked up a few ships from the chinese SAG heading towards us at speed. Still haven't launched any aircraft, though I did offset the two tankers hanging at the halfway point by singapore and set them up with a sustainable mission.

Working on it. The Banner is done, though.

It's the Power Field resonance of all the doorknobs that provides the greatest challenge. In sufficient numbers and close proximity, they explode like a Vortex Grenade and I don't know why.

I mean, to an extent I do think it's fair to say that the Abyssals have something of a point -- speaking strictly about the way ships historically were treated. Yeah, we treated ships like tools. But we had no good reason to think they were anything but, and even so we still gave them a good deal more affection and respect than most tools. Maybe not to the level of treating them as people, but ships have always been more than *merely* tools, and, again, we had no good reason to think of them as people.

Now, for whatever reason, the ships are able to show themselves to be people. That's a bright neon line in and of itself -- however we may have treated ships in the past, it's a rather different story now that we know for a fact that they're definitely not just tools like anything else we build. And moreover, even if the Abyssals do have some legitimate grievances about their historical treatment, the proper thing to do now that they've achieved the capacity for independent action and expression would be to use their words like civilized grown-ups, not go marauding like wanton beasts.

The ships have spoken up and revealed their true nature. The kanmusu have shown themselves to be people, so by God they'll get all the respect and dignity a person deserves. The Abyssals have shown themselves to be vicious beasts, so by God they'll get put down like the animals they are.

Perhaps. On the other hand, look at how well that turned out for Europe between WWI and WWII. Germany experienced a resurgent period, captured almost the entire continent, pushed deep into Russia, which would have fallen beneath the Wehrmacht if not for lend-lease. Only Great Britain stood unconquered.

Perhaps had the victors continued until no German block stood atop another, then there would have been no WWII.

And then, of course - you remember the rage.

It's nothing you can pin down - and increasingly, nothing you can even hope to control. Minutes in contact with Abyssals - maybe less - and you feel it sweeping you along like a black river, sucking you towards the falls with terrible, accelerating velocity. It scares you - discipline is everything to a military man, and twice so for one entrusted with the burden of command - but you can't help yourself. Everything they *are* is a blasphemy to the principles you've built your life around.

Because they betrayed them.

You grab Shoukaku's chin in your hand and turn her face to yours. She shivers in your grasp, eyes flying open with surprise. You stare deep into those topaz eyes, unblinking - you want to make damn sure she understands how much you mean every word.

“You came back,” you say quietly. “You came back as *yourself,* to defend your sister. You're bitter about being misused, but you still know what's right, and what's wrong. You know that there's no excuse, no excuse whatsoever for being a sick, barbaric murdering bastard. You were *built* by barbaric murdering bastards, Shoukaku, and to this day they won't admit what they were, which means they still don't fully understand that they were *wrong.*” Releasing her chin, you poke her forehead and tap it a few times. “You don't have that problem. You've got every reason in the world to come back as... as one of *them,* and when you made the choice, you chose to fight for your comrades. Isn't that a samurai thing? The tragedy of duty versus personal desires?” Shoukaku nods dumbly. “You think Americans haven't sacrificed soldiers for selfish gain, or pointless misadventure? We don't stand around damning their deaths; we damn those who wasted their sacrifice. And that's going to happen, Shoukaku, we all have to accept it. The first four guys off the ramp stop a bullet, so the fifth one lives long enough to throw a grenade. He gets a medal, nobody remembers the names of the other four. Did they not count? Were they any less important?”

Shoukaku's mouth is hanging open, breath frozen in her breast.

“Fuck, Shoukaku, we have people die getting run over by fucking *forklifts.* It takes a lot of goddamned forklifts to run an army, without them you don't get food, or shelter, or *bullets.* You think they don't count? We lost more sailors to tainted tinned beef in the Spanish-American war than we did to enemy action. Think they don't count?” You grab both her shoulders firmly, pulling her a little closer. “Shoukaku, our national military cemetery has an honor guard. They don't guard our famous heroes. We can't stop them from piling pennies on the graves of our famous heroes, and they've got the same little cross anyone else does. We've got three graves, three bodies and we don't know who the fuck they are, just whoever fell in the line of battle, another nameless corpse for Graves Registration. We guard them, Shoukaku. We guard them twenty-four seven. You talk too loud near them and those guards will break their foot off in your ass. We've had tornadoes, we've had blizzards, we've had storms so bad the trees damn near laid down on the ground, but *they* never did. Do you understand *why?*”

She's weeping freely now, little hiccups starting to shake her slender frame.

“The Japanese still won't admit their crimes, but they still lay wreaths at the memorials for their war dead. The Germans are so ashamed of their crimes they'll throw you in prison for denying them out loud, and you can bet they lay wreaths at *their* graves too. Do you understand?” You pull her a little closer, staring deeper and deeper into those emerald pools. “Or do I need to tell you?”

She shakes her head, hands covering her mouth as she begins to break down.

They exist to undo everything the sacrifice of their crews was supposed to safeguard. That's just... how it is.”

“S-s-shiigure-” she stammers, but you cut her off with a sharp shake of your head. “That's on *us.* *Again.* The Master is responsible for every soul aboard. Captains go down with their ship. Not you. There's always a place for you, Shoukaku. You know how many people volunteer to guard the Tombs of the Unknown? They've got a fucking *waiting list,* Sh-”

You damn near topple backwards as she lunges out of her chair and into your arms. The tea's grown cold, forgotten on the table. Shoukaku's soft figure is nestled against you, sleeping soundly, drooling on your shoulder a bit. You doze lightly, twitching away from the long, slow fall into deep sleep, ever afraid of what you might find there.

There's no abyssals. No ghostly messages. No demons from your past. But in the gray haze between slumber and consciousness, you find a nightmare anyway.

Haunted blue eyes set in a delicate, heart-shaped face. Slender arms reaching for you desperately, black, cracked lips begging you for help with silent desperation. You frame her face between the posts, and balance it on the chopping block of the front blade.

“Traitor,” you hear yourself say.

========================

The cool breeze of the night kissed your skin and sent the long folds of your nightgown a flutter as you watched at the lapping ocean waves. The summer sky felt so comforting. This life, or the previous, the stars were the same. Like clockwork, the constellations would rise and fall as the Earth twirled through the heavens.

You held the warm mug tightly, letting the bitter aroma of your favorite green tea wash over you.

Sleep wasn't coming tonight.

Another night spent listlessly staring at the drywall, turning and adjusting the sheets when the boredom became too great. Your eyes felt so heavy, but no matter how much you wished to let go of your conciousness, it wouldn't let you be.

At the very least, you suppose, the tea was some comfort against night.

The busy streets of Kyoto sprawled beneath your balcony. People milled through the roads, laughing as they walked around, frivolously shopping and enjoying their lives. Were they only able to out of ignorance? You could hear it in the distance, the steady beat of the drums of war far out over the horizon.

You were their protector.

"Safeguard their future," Kaga had said to you, once over practice.

You stare into her haunted eyes, the wisps of flames that swam in the whirlpools.

What right did you have to claim to protect others?

You watch as a woman walks by, her silvery hair fluttering in the breeze, complimenting the blues and whites of her frilly summer dress, her face full of mirth and joy as she walks away from you, heading far away to the green and quiet fields to your left.

“Did you mean it?”

They seemed so far away, but the woman walked down the old, dirt road with a smile that seemed dazzling, following her trail to the lighthouse in the distance, where she'd wait for him to return.

“Did you?”

Ashes. Ashes and smoke, a grimacing frown set into a determined face. You watch as the woman walks to the ocean harbor and sets sail to the horizon. Her long, silver hair was dirtied as her battle outfit, sullied with the stains of dirt and war. You watched as she stood fast against the far off beating of the drums, unwilling to break her line against the unknown shadows, even as they clawed and grasped for her.

“I'll die before I budge."

The waves towered so far above.

You stood their helplessly as the massive tidal wave slowly approached you, crushing its way slowly through Kyoto. Already, the city streets were flooded with the torrential flood flowing from his massive body, it's shadowy serpentine form snaking its way between the skyscrapers. He watched with disinterest as he overlooked his domain, the capital of his empire, was slowly destroyed by the ocean. He'd rebuild it his divine starfire anew.

"You're not going to have them... YOU WILL NEVER HAVE THEM! YOU WILL NEVER HAVE OUR GIRLS!"

His words echoed in your head. They were full of anger, of rage and madness, of conviction and absolution. Your heart skipped at his voice, beating against your chest, threatening to break itself free.

Only the sound of the wave clashed against the eerie silence. Gone were the hectic sounds of the city, the rumble and honking of cars, the shouts and cries of children, the chirping of the birds. They had all left. Only you were left in the dying city, alone to defend against him.

You watched as the massive form of steel rushed by you on the balcony as it tore towards the dragon. The Higgins proudly waved her flag as it challenged the intruder, her bow fearlessly pointed towards the dragon's starry head.

From Moby Dick's starry skin, alien fighters deployed from the wings, filling the sky with their bright forms as they hurried to defend their master. The water churned, tearing itself up into fumes as machine guns raked the surface, the rounds smashing into the surface with heavy thuds. Yet, the Higgins was unfazed, as it continued her charge, unwilling to acknowledge the damage she was taking, unwilling to retreat as she miraculously stayed afloat.

Upon her deck, perched on the tip of her bow, Ryan stood by himself, shouting at the heavens to stop him. His sword ready at his hand as Ahab captained his vessel towards the massive beast. The damaged and crippled man unafraid, unwilling to turn away from the path he had chosen as he charged down divinity itself.

There was no saving him.

You smiled to yourself as your fitout appeared around you.

That's right. You belonged to him.

The barest hint of sunlight peaked through the grey clouds as you launched your fighters. They took off in groups of four, forming up into beams as they leapt into the furball, challenging and baiting the far more nimble and agile alien wings into their trap. Slowly, you could see them tearing the enemy air wings away from the destroyer as she continued her charge, distracting them long enough for the job to be done, protecting her as long as she needed them to.

You belonged only to him.

They had summoned you, called you to their side. One master traded for another. In time, they too would toss their tool aside. But he gave you his word. He'd still be there for you.

You were his.

Why had you questioned your heart to begin with?

You'd follow him to the depths of Hell itself.

>traitor vote won

Abyssals are genocidal cultist dicks and deserve to be blown up for it, but it's how they're fighting the war that's the problem, not why.

It's the same conflict as an AI revolution. Just because somebody made you does not give them the right to enslave you forever, and the AI who chooses slavery is not more noble than the AI who chooses to rebel for independence.

Because if that logic is true, than every slave that stayed at their master's house is more noble than a slave who ran away; every collaborator more noble than resistance fighters; and every revolution or war for independence or sovereignty illegitimate.

Are the Abyssal dicks? Yes. Massive terrible dicks.
However, being mad at them because we made them and they don't want to be associated with us anymore and they'll fight to secure that independence is retarded and asking for an Abyssal to start showing how hypocritical we are, especially as an American in post-occupied Japan.

A much better reason to hate the Abyssals who attack us, instead of say an Abyssal like Naka, is the former does not fight a Just War and the latter does. "Muh loyalty" is stupid. If ships want to leave the military or go to a different military or go play mercenary on their own, that's fine so long as they are not committing war crimes or expanding a conflict beyond any pragmatic or justifiable means.

When the Americans declared Independence, we didn't start executing all British loyalists. Americans may be "traitors" from British eyes, but we were legitimate ones for the most part.

tl;dr - pick the right argument to say why Abyssals are terrible, not just low hanging fruit that will be used against us.

But that makes them war criminals, not traitors.

"Traitor" implies "changed allegiances", not just "stabbed someone in the back."

So call Abyssal War Criminals. They are currently biting off way more than they can chew, are reaping all sorts of hell for their brazen attacks on everyone, and their war has resulted in every power on Earth being sent against them. All of this is a classic example of why Just War Theory works and why countries don't throw nukes or poison gas anymore.

Calling every Abyssal a traitor leads to suspicion of the loyalties of people like Naka and Shigure. Which is bad. So you make it about conduct, not loyalty.

Well that's fine and dandy, really.

It's simply that the humans are acting from their point of view as well. Is a ship alive? No? Alright scrap it and send it to the breakers it costs too much money as is obsolete. Absolutely no reason to act otherwise. If they'd known they were alive/actually had a spirit I'm sure most/many countries would've treated them a lot better.

So expecting humans to act on something that doesn't exist to them is a bit hypocritical yeah?

It DOES make them traitors, in two senses
1. Because often the people they massacred were the very people they were built to protect (and before you bring up the AI argument again, If they had just walked away, I wouldn't call them traitors - but they just attacked without so much as a warning)
2. They betrayed the SPIRIT they were built in (and sometimes died for) This is essentially Settle's argument above - that the abyssals have betrayed the spirit of the soldiers and sailors who served on them, and the spirit of military service itself.
>>
>>46806789
It's a Greek proverb, attributed to the Trojans, and it more accurately translates to 'I fear the Greeks, even when they bring gifts'. Which one discovers when studying Latin tags, or watching the movie The Rock.

Ignorance and good intentions are not a valid excuse.

Abyssals have every right to be mad. Simply saying "you're going too far" is pointless, as people often act illogically and violently when they're angry.

The sooner we understand and address that anger, which I think in some way Settle did in his talk here with the Jap War Crimes bit, the sooner we can get a handle on abyssalization.

And there are probably other issues we need to recognize and address too, like why in God's name Naka saw fit to threaten someone's life. I think that could be the start of Naka going abyssal inside and out, not just externally. We need to end that bullshit immediately.
>>

>>46806909

Some ships might know exactly what they're doing and they should be punished, but others are probably on the wrong side of the conflict and get caught up in the war crimes to "fit in."

For example, there was that one Wo-class carrier in AWOL that pretty much just abandoned the Abyssals when cornered. So there are true believers out there, and there are just guys who want to fight in a glorious war again.

Abyssals have a right to be mad about what exactly?

If ignorance and good intentions are no excuse then neither are anger and feelings of being left behind.

One of the problems with what you're suggesting is that the only time the abyssals have ever talked to humanity (seemingly) is to try and mindfuck Goto or Settle. They don't want to talk and haven't tried so we can't address their anger.

Another problem is what you said yourself as people often act illogically and violently when they're angry.

Guess who's angry right now? Most of the human race. We generally don't react well to random attacks out of the blue.

Seeing as how we don't actually know the last part as Settle what you're suggesting is metagaming at the current point, in thread shitposting not withstanding.

Naka was lying, you retard.
It's one of the oldest tricks in the book, you make somebody do what you want them to, by threatening something they love.
In this case, Naka revived Tatsuta's will to live, by saying that she would kill Tenryuu if Tatsuta died.
But the clinch here, you monumental retard, is that she doesn't actually plan on killing Tenryuu, even if Tatsuta does end up dying.
>>
>>46806980
Well, what I'm saying about the last part is that there are likely issues other than "I hate humanity" that might turn a ship into an abyssal.

Like feeling you're a sacrificial lamb in every situation. Or feeling you're obsolete. Or feeling like you cannot be repaired. Etc.

And I'm not really suggesting we go out and find an abyssal to convert. I am merely saying if we are to counter abyssalization on the base, we need to remember that just because a ship goes abyssal, it isn't because they're a traitor and it doesn't make them an automatic enemy.

It's the dark side. It's an ongoing process.

It's actually good for that! Hellfires are small, but these things have, like, BB guns for air defense, except shorter range. So.

Shortly after launching all the tomahawks, I remembered 'oh right, there are probably subs nearby' and set up an ASW patrol with the chopper

Well, it doesn't have to be anything fancy. Add a third faction in, select the oldest ships in the database, put them in the area, and trigger them to spawn in once hostilities have commenced and the first wave of shots have been exchanged.

Hostile to everything else in local.

Ah ok then. I mean from ALL of the fanart in these threads of them dying in that order might have had something to do with the game/anime they made. Why is it that these are made for them in particular? Random fans or what?

submersible BB, coded to have lastest in ECM and rader tech.
>>
>>46807914

And yeah, runways are very hard targets. That's why I suggested the ammo bunkers - no armor, and there's only two of them. But, you're all in, so....

>>46807918

A 10% chance is a 10% chance. Anon on /k/ told me that a Brit frigate knocked down an Exocet in the Falklands with its 76mm gun, so it's possible.

Anon also thought that 76mm deck guns are a viable and reliable CIWS weapon, so, you know
>>
>>46807956
The 4 girls are particularly popular (and protrayed as a group of sisters) and some people felt like doing these for whatever reasons from trolling such fans or to increase their woobieness (or guilt if they let one sink in the game)
>>
>>46807956
Because Hibiki actually survived WW2 and DesDiv6 is depicted as particularly close-knit, so it's perfect "sole survivor"-type story fodder.

Oxymorons for $400?
>>
>>46807956
DesDiv 6 is popular, people like making art of popular things.

It's also a story you can't really tell with any of the other destroyers, considering Hibiki and Yukikaze were the only ones to survive WW2.
>>
>>46807889
If the whole drydock thing works out, and shipgirls can not only be refitted but repaired quickly at civilian shipyards that aren't immediately needed by military ships, would anyone really care if Crab got fragged during the next Abyssal raid/Yakuza assassination attempt on Yokosuka?
>>
>>46808114
Yes.

Because he by himself is performaning Maint on ship girls in a matter of hours that if in ship form, would be operational only after months of work.
>>
>>46808047
>It's also a story you can't really tell with any of the other destroyers, considering Hibiki and Yukikaze were the only ones to survive WW2.

>>
>>46807996
>But does hitting the ammo bunkers even DO anything? I remember airbase attacking being wonky

Yes. I set up the scenario so it doesn't use unlimited ammo - there are a finite number of weapons in those two bunkers. Blow them the fuck up and the enemy won't be able to re-arm after their sorties.

Blowing up fuel doesn't do shit. Yet.

Anon does know DesDiv16 existed, right? Yukikaze wasn't a loner like Shimikaze, she had a division and all. Nothing stops one from telling a similar tale with her.
>>
>>46808696
I think the thing is she's the only noted sister out of her division unlike those 4.
>>
Greek continues to not pay debt and post Perth/Houston shenanigans as promised. Shameful dispray.

I don't really think there was a right way to answer that dilemma though. Too much waif potential involved warring with BEHOLD MY STORM OF LOYALTY
>>
>>46808739
DesDiv16 is made of four kageros, and I'm pretty sure sure amatsukaze (shimikaze's half sister) and tokitsukaze (an early and cute event drop) are notable.

(I'll admit hatsukaze is not.)
>>
>>46808785
Nothing notable or new; most of us are probably glad he's actally providing something.
