“Bad dreams,” you sigh, looking past your contented dogfish and into the shadowed recesses of your living room, strewn with the cardboard boxes that contain the sum total of your life. There's a diploma in there, and a binder with your accolades, and someplace, somewhere, a little velvet box that never left your pocket.

“I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself a king of infinite space... were it not that I have bad dreams,” you muse.

“Huh?” Shoukaku asks.

“Shakespeare,” you tell her. “Just some hack that strung together a bunch of old, well-known quotations.” Rummaging in the cupboard again, you pull out the dented old percolator and fill it at the sink. Kongou's impromptu breakfast tea left detritus all over, including some teabags. Shoukaku shuffles aside to let you at the stove - as you put the percolator on the flame, you notice she's wearing honest-to-god- “bunny slippers?”

“Aren't they cute?” she says with a smile, balancing a foot on her toes like a model showing off a new shoe. “And they're so comfortable and fluffy~”

“So,” you mumble. “Sleepwalking.”

Her face falls, and she hugs herself again. “Yeah.”

“That's usually linked to dreams,” you tell her.

“... yeah,” she says, much quieter this time.

You watch the blue flames flicker and dance under the percolator, the ghostly radiance eerily familiar as it plays over the counter and reflects off the polished side of the fridge. You twist the stove lamp's dial, but it's a simple on/off, not a dimmer. The slow, hollow ticking of heating metal and the subdued surresations of the air conditioning are the only sounds.

I've been doing some research into the whole miko thing that some of the Japanese shipgirls, particularly Shoukaku and Kongo wear. It says there that white symbolizes purity. Ergo, assuming that either of them get it on, they're going to have to change attire.

Just gulped down some dinner. For you nerds with CMANO, I've got something for you: http://www.mediafire.com/download/9oy8b98yxr2d24t/South+China+Clash+REDUX%2C+2016.scen

This is a modified version of the old developer-made/stock scenario South China Clash. Nowhere near done yet, so don't pass it around too much (I haven't credited the original scenario designer and a few other people in the actual scenario info and such) but I DO need some playtesting of it to see if things are working as intended.

The LCS's have their Hellfires now but for some reason the AI refuses to fire them, WRA and such be damned, so things will be slightly less challenging from the PLAN side. Lemme know if the AI derps out and yolos into SAMs or keeps its radars off even when it ought to know that cruise missiles are inbound, or whatever.

Mad props to the Catte for helping me with the code - first time I've touched coding since fucking middle school, and the furthest I got back then was "FLOATING POINTS ARE A THING WOW." Generally:

-- The shootout between Chinese Coast Guard and Philipine Navy should be more intense. Planning on more detailed patrol zones (maybe with fixed RPs on the Philipine cutters) so the LCS's stay near when you're playing as the PLAN, but it was more work than I could be arsed to do right now.

-- That sneaky little fuck of a sub saves its missiles for the Burke (unless an LCS gets uncomfortably close) and won't bother with the Philippine patrol boats. Not sure how intelligent a choice that is for the sub from a Real Life perspective, though. I wonder - seems you can link a unit-enters-area trigger to a "weapon," with some work I might be able to make the sub fire when other missiles are inbound in an attempt to swarm defenses... BLEH EFFORT

-- More shit to shoot at with your cruise missiles, I hate scenarios that give you 50 Tomahawks and nothing to shoot them at. Fuckin single-unit airfield is right out, go ahead and plaster Woody Island like it owes you money

-- stuff I forgot idk insomnia

-- christ I need to update the scoring, a fighter and a DDG should not be the same point value

>A Minnesota man was fined $2,583 and sentenced to three years' probation on charges of detonating an explosive device and unlawful possession of components for explosives after he detonated 100 lb (45 kg) of Tannerite inside the bed of a dump truck by shooting it with a rifle chambered in .50 BMG from 300 yards (270 m) away on January 14, 2008, in Red Wing, Minnesota. The blast could be felt at Prairie Island Nuclear Power Plant (roughly 5 miles away).

>A 20-year-old man in Busti, New York shot 18 lb (8.2 kg) of Tannerite on January 13, 2013, that sent a particularly "loud boom" through much of southern Chautauqua County, New York and extending as far south as Pennsylvania, at least 3 miles away. Multiple other sounds of explosions were also reported in the incident. The explosive noise caused numerous phone calls to the Chautauqua County Sheriff's Office, the New York State Police, and other law enforcement in the area.

>On March 19, 2016, a 32-year-old man in Walton County, Georgia, severed his leg after shooting at a riding lawnmower filled with 3 pounds of Tannerite. A piece of shrapnel flew 30 yards and removed the leg below his knee. Six months prior to that accident, another man in Muskegon, Michigan, also had his leg severed after using Tannerite to blow up a 55-gallon drum, despite being 50 yards from the explosion.

Oh. Oh yes.
Pack in a few hundred pounds of ANFO too. Make it a blast worthy to remember.

I've seen people shooting ARs like that before, but it just looks really uncomfortable. Supposed to give you better control over the recoil, but the .223 and 5.56 NATO rounds I've used have fuck-all for recoil compared to 7.62x39mm. But then, my MAK-90 has no muzzle brake and I don't think I've ever seen an AR without one.

She nods, her white hair shimmering with the faint blue radiance in the shadows, lending it the faint tinge of blued steel, like bright moonlight. “Yes.”

“Did it go okay?”

“... kind of. She's... doing better.”

“Why the change of heart, though?” You press your palm against your temple, making Shoukaku wince as your spine crinkles and crunches. “I thought you were spooked of her.”

Shoukaku studies her bunny slippers, letting her long hair shield her eyes. “I was afraid.”

“You were in quite the panic, earlier,” you remind her.

“I greeted her when she was first summoned back,” she tells you. “I... told her she was with her comrades again. It'd all be okay, and then-” she sniffs - “the incident, everything, I...” Shoukaku sinks on unsteady legs into one of your cheap kitchen chairs, arms wrapped tightly around herself as she stares at her knees. “I wanted to take it all back, but - I can't.”

You get out some mugs for the tea and scare up the sugar cubes as her hesitant admissions pour forth, giving yourself time to turn them over in your exhaustion-numbed brain. “Curses aren't catching, Shoukaku. I don't know much about Japanese mythology, but I do know that.”

She shuffles her bunny slippers over the linoleum silently.

“In the CIC... you... you *challenged* them. You told them you'd never let them take us.”

You nod ever so slightly.

“Did you mean it?” Those topaz eyes are shimmering wetly now, diffusing their inner light. “Did you?”

A captain needs a crew and an admiral needs a fleet.

Every battle, we've seen humans throwing themselves on the line. Sherman. The Filipino cutter. Mustin and Fitzgerald. Lekir, Steadfast, Kasturi. She had a crew too, once. She knows what we're capable of.

You really should upload the functions I helped you write to their forums.
I'm pretty sure other players would be happy to have the distance measurement code as well.

I'm really kinda annoyed. I derived the arc distance between two points of different altitude on a geodesic ellipsoid and I don't there's any use for it past calculating, say, I dunno, the distance between two ICBMs or something.

(The function I helped him write only works for two objects at the same elevation since they'd have to be on the same ellipsoid's surface)

Sounds silly, but mid-term maybe it'd be worth it to put together some small-scale facilities so your crews can get shore leave? Something like a fully functional dollsize hotel/bar? Not sure how it works or if it even applies with 'spoopy shipgirl magic bullshit', but being permanently confined onboard even when anchored at the base can't be good for crew morale.

You dodge her gaze, turning to the percolator again, wishing the fucking thing would whistle already and give your hands something to do. “I can't make any promises about succeeding, Shoukaku. I'm just a man, after all.” A sigh, your eyes drifting closed, that weariness in the back of your head rising like a black tide to weigh down your thoughts. “But I know my job. And that's to stand on the line - between good and evil. Light and darkness. And I'll die before I budge. That's what it means, to be a soldier - that's the oath you swear. Without that, it's... just a career. It's just brown-nosing and shiny decorations and a steady paycheck. You need more than bread to live - at least, I do. I can't walk away from that any more than I can outrun my own shadow.”

A scrape of chair legs on linoleum. A breath taken, and held.

The percolator finally finishes, giving you something to focus on instead of standing around like a moron. You fill two mugs - large ones - with tea. Black tea, apparently, which is fine for you, but Shoukaku - well, fine for her, too. She needs all the caffeine she can get, you suspect. With the box of sugar cubes balanced in the crook of your arm, you carry a mug in each hand to the table. “Here. Might want sugar for this, it ain't green tea, that's for sure.”

Shoukaku grabs your wrist as you set down the tea, her soft, delicate hand clutching with desperate strength. Startled, you look down at the top of her head, and see that she's visibly trembling.

“W-would you?” she asks quietly. “I w-was your enemy. I... I helped kill your comrades. Why? Why would you-”
>>
>>46802713
As is tradition
>>
“Shoukaku,” you interrupt her wearily, “I've got nothing to do with it. The military... some people do it for six years, some people do it for life... some people do it for Duty and some people do it for college tuition or free dental or whatever-the-fuck. You get all sorts. But we get enough of the right sort that we never lack for heroes, when we need them.” You drop yourself into a chair with a groan of relief; your leg is awake and aching like a sumbitch now. That last Vicodin before bed is too distant to take the edge off, but just recent enough to still be sandbagging you. “Neither will you. I know you girls have the weight of the world on your shoulders, but...” you sigh. “I don't know how to say it. I'm a sailor, not a poet. But... you know the Iowa-class battleships, right?”

She nods, still hiding her face behind her bangs, still gripping your wrist.

“Two of them were released to museums. The other two are *still* on the Naval Register. New Jersey'd had the training mechanisms of her main batteries welded down, and Congress *still* forced them to repair it and put her in the reserve fleet. They got museum berths eventually, but they're still required by LAW to maintain them so they can be reactivated, if needed.”

Shoukaku lifts her eyes to yours, shyly - and glances away when she blinks to clear the wetness. “You mean... recently?”

“Very. Iowa didn't get her museum berth till 2011.”

“... why? Aren't they obsolete?”

“Laughably so. But people don't want to let them go, Shoukaku. They're not just so much scrap iron, to us. They're... something more.”

“... they were victorious,” Shoukaku whispers. “I... I wasn't. I... I don't think Japan...” a shuddering sigh as she lifts her eyes to you, crying freely. “What do I mean to you, Settle?”

[ ] You're my comrade. You stand on the line, with all the others. And you're doing that *now.* Nobody gives a fuck about the past, Shoukaku - the enemy's here, in the present, and you're part of the thin line holding them at bay. *Everyone* can see that.

The museum ships are obsolete. Militarily worthless. Scrap heaps. Some of them barely float. Some of them can't float at all. Some of them can never float again, no matter how much you tried to repair them. By all rights, they belong in a scrap yard.
But, humans are a strange creature. Sometimes, we value our past more than we value our present, or even our future. We keep our museum ships, we venerate them, sometimes we come close to damn near worshipping them. The myth of the invincible battleship. The era-ending power of the aircraft carrier. The tenacity of the destroyer, and the submarine. We do it all for the same reasons we have museums full of tanks, planes, guns and equipment, some of which was obsolete when it was made, all of it obsolete now. Our past is one of our greatest treasures as a species, and not just because of historical knowledge, or monetary value. Because history is where our heroes are. It's where our legends come from. It's so much harder to find that in our present. But one look to the past, and all of the great acts of courage, heroism, and kindness ever propagated by humanity can be seen. That is why we keep our ships. That's why we care about them. Maybe it's the myth of the sailor, as well. Maybe it's different for everybody. But the universal truth is simple. They are important, and they always will be.

England's the UR example though, as they were absolutly dependent on their Navy to protect them, with their airforce a close second. If the English Navy hadn't been keeping the Germans locked up, I think they would have actually gone for the invasion, after which that's all she wrote.

Then again, they also never really took any decent care of their ships. Warspite never did get her rudder damage from Jutland repaired- which never would have happened in the US.

Ships have been dying for their men and men for their ships since long before the shipgirls started coming back. If anything, your embodiment as flesh and blood just makes us want to protect you even more than when you were steel and oil. Don't tell me you don't understand that devotion - you LIVED that devotion. The best ships were those where ship and crew acted as one to a common purpose. That hasn't changed. The only difference is now we don't have to find out what our ships want by divination and voodoo - we can just ask them personally. If it weren't for the Abyssals, we'd be fighting off new recruits and reenlistments with sticks - because the opportunity to actually talk to your ship is the dream of every sailor worthy of the name.

Bottom line: I've got more to fight for now than ever before. And that's why I don't give a damn about the past - I'm not refighting the last war, I'm winning this one. And if any one of you don't make it to see our victory, then know that must have killed me first. The captain goes down with his ship. An admiral leads them into the depths personally.

That flip airbase has a turboprop patrol craft.

Down in singapore we've got tankers and superhornets and poseidons, and a chinese listening post between them and us.

>Akatsuki: cruiser/gunfire

Not descriptive enough.

>Operating on the right flank of the Japanese battleships, Akatsuki is often credited with illuminating and then torpedoing USS Atlanta: however, her Chief Torpedo Officer, Michiharu Shinya – one of her few survivors - later stated unequivocally that Akatsuki was overwhelmed by gunfire before being able to launch any torpedoes that night. Soon after illuminating Atlanta, she was heavily hit by American gunfire and sank early in the action near Savo Island at position 09°17′S 159°56′ECoordinates: 09°17′S 159°56′E, with the loss of all but eighteen crewmen (out of a total complement of 197), which were later captured by U.S. forces.

Death by Harder applies to:

Ikazuchi (Akatsuki class)

Also, according to my book on the IJN, apparently Shimakaze was at Samar.

>>
>>46803820
Literally no nation at war cares about the enemy nation's lives.
>>
>>46803802
according to the publication I'm reading from, she clocked in at 39 knots normally. Also, that was just with her fists, impressive though they are. I think Sammy had better radar, so she would probably be more accurate in a gun fight.
>>
>>46803802
We need to go FASTER then.

They have literally no competent capital FCs in their alliance with the exception of Lazarus Telraven, and he's done fuck all for the Imperium in this war.
>>
>>46804138
From a summary I just googled, found on reddit:

>CCP introduced a new system for capturing sovereignty
The new system now allows guerilla like tactics to be used. Meaning sovereignty is no longer decided by who brings the biggest ships.

>The Mittani's failed Kickstarter
The Mittani (leader of the Imperium) attempted to get a book published about the fountain war. This was met a with huge backlash from the rest of the eve community, esp, /r/Eve, who felt he was trying to monetize his alliance members. After this Imperium members were encouraged not to use /r/Eve thus closing themselves off.

>High Profile Imperium members defect
Not liking the direction the Imperium was taking a number of former high profile FC's and spy's leave the Imperium and join rival alliances.

>The 'I want isk' financial backing for war
The Final piece. The website 'i want isk' (think Iron bank) begins paying alliances to go to war with the Imperium after coalition member SMA fails to pay a bill and accuses IWI of illegal activity.

Holocaust denial literature

The focus on supposed Allied atrocities during the war has been a theme in Holocaust denial literature, particularly in countries where outright denial of the Holocaust is illegal.[111] According to historian Deborah Lipstadt, the concept of "comparable Allied wrongs", such as the post-war expulsions and Allied war crimes, is at the center of, and a continuously repeated theme of, contemporary Holocaust denial; phenomenon she calls "immoral equivalencies".[112]
Japanese neo-nationalists

Japanese neo-nationalists argue that Allied war crimes and the shortcomings of the Tokyo War Crimes Tribunal were equivalent to the war crimes committed by Japanese forces during the war.[citation needed] American historian John W. Dower has written that this position is "a kind of historiographic cancellation of immorality—as if the transgressions of others exonerate one's own crimes".[113] While right-wing forces in Japan have tried to deny or re-write the war-time history, they have been unsuccessful due to pressure from both within and outside Japan.[114]
