Condensation beads on the windshield of your shuttle, the cool humidity of the early morning darkness promising a long and muggy afternoon to you as you let out a long yawn. "You know, I think this is actually the earliest that I've woken up since I was on Earth." You mutter, glancing over towards Angelicia and Julius, the mechanic looking to be just about as groggy as you feel while the swordsman only grins brightly at both of you.

"Well we've all gotta start somewhere, Doc. Maybe by the time this shindig is over you'll be getting up before dawn every day." Reece quips, leading you to roll your eyes at him.

"Yeah, somehow I doubt that's going to be happening any time soon." You reply, opening your mouth to be continued, only to be interrupted by a tired groan from Angel.

"Both of you need to shut up. Any time before seven in the morning should be spent for either sleeping or drinking." She grumbles, stifling back a yawn of her own that you just barely avoid mimicking.

A smirk tugs at your lips, your own reluctance to wake of slowly starting to fade, "Have a bit too much to drink last night, Angel?"

"No." The mechanic shoots back, giving you what you're sure is supposed to be an intimidating glare, though the effect is undermined when she yawns again before continuing, "I had just enough to drink, Doc. I might have had more if you and Abi had joined, but you two missed out."

Julius lets out a small chuckle at her denial, something that you do your best to hold back as you shrug at her, "Maybe so, but we also have modded rounds for our weapons, so I think it probably equals out."

Angelicia huffs at your amusement, even as a somewhat tired smile of her own starts to form, "Maybe. I guess we'll never know for sure."

"No kidding." You mutter, before glancing around around the bay again, noticing that while most of the mercenaries have moved on to more productive tasks, a few still seem to be showing at least a casual interest in your own group. You shake your head, doing your best to ignore them as you turn back to Tom and Freida, "Have either of you heard from Abi yet?"

"No, I haven't seen her this morning. I'm sure she's on her way though." Freida answers, while Tom nods in agreement with her.

You briefly consider stepping out of the bay to see if she's having any trouble finding it, though you're sure Freida's probably right. Of course, considering that you're still going to be sitting here for at least another half hour, you could take the time to read, if you wanted to. You still have several of the books that you bought completely untouched.

What do you want to do?

>Go talk to the alien mercs. Try to find out why they're so interested in your group.
>Step outside to look for Abi. She's probably on her way, but you'd hate for her to be left behind if she's having trouble finding the place.

A soft sigh escapes you as you make your way to the side of the shuttle and slide down it, drawing curious looks from the rest of your group as you tug your codex tablet from its pouch on your belt, though they quickly realize what you're up to as you pull up your library. "Seriously, Jack? Do you take that thing with you everywhere you go?" Angelicia asks as she props herself up next to Tom.

You glance up at the mechanic with a shrug, "What, you mean you don't?" You reply seriously, only to receive a somewhat amused look from her and the rest of the group.

"I don't think I've really even messed with mine yet." Reece replies with a shrug, drawing a nod of agreement from Tom while Freida shakes her head.

"I have read a little bit of the free material, but not much more than that."

You can't help but let out a quiet sigh of disappointment in your friends, "How do you guys expect to lay the groundwork for Human domination of the galaxy if you don't read about it?" You ask, doing your best to keep a straight face while Julius chuckles.

Angel rolls her eyes with a smirk, "You're such a nerd, Doc."

You quirk an eyebrow at her before shrugging, "Well, I guess that I can ignore those medical texts that I bought." You start, only for Tom to interrupt you.

"Read your book, son. It's not like there's anything else for you to do right now." The older man mutters, bringing a cup of what you assume to be a coffee equivalent to his lips. "Besides, it's too early for your jokes right now."

A grin tugs at the corner of your mouth, you're tempted to talk his ear off for that one, but ultimately decide that he's right about there not being anything else worthwhile to do right now. With that in mind you turn your attention back to your tablet.

You've got several books that you haven't started on yet. What do you want to read?

Learn how to patch up aliens.
>>
You flip through the books you bought on your codex tablet, eyes scanning your slowly growing selection of reading material before finally landing on the first aid manual you picked up in the book store. Considering the fact that you're trying to pass yourself off as a medic, and admittedly doing a pretty good job of it even if you do say so yourself, you decide that it probably wouldn't hurt at all to study better techniques to use on other species. After all, even you have to admit that you've been lucky not to have lost a patient yet, particularly seeing as you don't even know the most basics of what a species can and cannot ingest or whether there are better ways of stopping blood flow for some species than the most basic treatment of slapping a tourniquet on them.

With that in mind you open up the manual and quickly find yourself absolutely engrossed by it. While you do learn that most of what you've been doing is acceptable treatment for most species, you do pick up a couple of tips on where better to apply pressure and place tourniquets on certain races as compared to others to stymie blood loss, as well as what kinds of combat and emergency medicines can be administered without risk of doing more harm than good. As you get further into the book, the topic of how to treat shock for different aliens is brought up, along with the warning that for some aliens, such as the Paeteri, going into shock will cause them to enter a hyperactive or aggressive state rather than exhibit the symptoms that you typically were trained to look for.

interesting.
>>
>>46785519
>such as the Paeteri, going into shock will cause them to enter a hyperactive or aggressive state
We don't have any Paeteri in our expedition, do we?
Because having a guy that becomes a berserker when by all rights he should be slumped on the ground bleeding out, is a good friend and frightful enemy.

Good point. They should at least be passingly familiar with weird shit that happens when some aliens get injured.

Like maybe this other alien released a poisonous gas when its skin is puctured.

You're also surprised to learn that, without proper precautions, you're at just as much of a risk as your patients when it comes to performing first aid on some species, particularly when dealing with insectoid races, as their bodily fluids have a disturbing tendency to either be poisonous or caustic to many mammalian species, though it would appear that this isn't true all across the board. Additionally the manual details how to set bones for different races, as well as how and when it's appropriate to sacrifice a limb in order to save the patient, detailing that it should be done as an absolute last resort even for races that are able to regenerate lost limbs due to the shock and stress it puts on their systems.

>+2 for first aid on aliens.
>+1 for diagnosing symptoms for aliens.

Before you can get much further somebody taps your shoulder, tearing your attention away from your studying as you look up to see Julius grinning down at you. "Hey, man, the briefing's getting ready to start. Don't want you to be late another one just 'cause you had your nose buried in a book."

A small frown plays over your face at that thought as you nod, grabbing his hand and letting him help you up, "Thanks, Julius. The last thing I need is Nueve needing another reason to be a dick." You reply as you tuck the codex away and bend over to pick up your helmet before following him over to the huddled group of mercenaries and Antusyac Arms' 'security force'.

Once you manage to push your way closer to the front, past the larger aliens that were blocking your view, you're able to see lieutenant Nueve standing in the center of the group holding a smaller version of the same holo-display he was using last night. "Alright, is everybody here?" He asks, glancing around to the various team leaders for confirmation before nodding.

"Okay, good. We're getting ready to get moving, but first I just got some new information from our augmentation unit. They've reported scattered sightings of an unknown raider company moving through the area, along with a slightly higher than average level of wildlife activity since A company started working on cracking the bunker's security."

The K'tulu pause shortly as he clicks a button on his viewer zoom in on a somewhat fuzzy image of a Z'ho'don surrounded by several other smaller and more humanoid aliens in similar armor. The lieutenant casts a glance around the company to make sure everybody's still paying attention before continuing, "To be honest, I'm not particularly concerned about the local fauna. There haven't been any reports of apex predators in the area, and we should be able to handle anything less than that. Still, it's best to be on guard so keep your eyes open. As for these raiders, the sightings we have on them have been spotty at best, but there has been confirmation of at least one mechanized unit with them. It could be that they were just passing through the area and we'll never see them, however the timing seems to be somewhat suspicious, so I want all of you to keep an eye out for potential ambushes."

Several of the mercenaries and security platoon voice their quiet agreement with the alien, while you just nod silently, eyes still stuck on the large species of alien that you had trouble taking down in the apartment complex. Once the company quiets down again the lieutenant continues his briefing, recapping all of his points from your briefing last night before finally finishing up. "Alright, now that you're all up to speed, does anybody have any relevant questions?" He asks, eyes seeming to seek out your own group in particular.

Despite the small amount of annoyance pushing up within you as he seems to single your group out, you do have to recognize that he may have a decent reason for doing so. With that in mind, you glance at the floor, trying to think of anything you might need to know that wasn't already covered.

After just a few moments you realize that despite the multiple briefings, you still haven't been told about the makeups of the security platoon or the other 'freelancers'. It may be prudent to ask if any of them have a medic or if you're the only one tagging along, though on the other hand that is something that could probably be learned by asking around outside of the briefing as well. You also briefly consider asking if Nueve knows any more about the the raiders or the wildlife he mentioned, but you notice that nobody else seems to consider it important enough to ask about at the moment. It also occurs to you that, while this may not be the time or place for it, you should probably get some kind of record of chronic health issues and irregularities that any individuals in the company might have.

Are there any questions you want to ask?
>Ask about another medic. You need to know if you're the only one, and if not you need to link up with the others.
>Ask about the raiders. Are there any more specifics that the lieutenant knows about them?
>Ask about the local wildlife. Nueve didn't seen overly concerned about it, but you still don't know much about them.

You toss several questions over in your head for a moment before shaking your head and deciding on only asking the most important one for now. The rest can wait for when you're on the shuttle. With that in mind you raise your hand into the air, holding it there confidently despite the somewhat smug look Nueve adopts as he nods at you, "Doctor Yarick, what are you doing?"

"I have a question." You reply simply as you drop your arm, not bothering to elaborate any further than that. From the corner of your eye you see Julius trying to suppress a smirk.

The lieutenant lets out a soft sigh, his forehead lighting momentarily before nods, "Very well, Doctor, what questions do you have?" He asks impatiently.

You do your best not to roll your eyes at his tone before speaking up, "I've got a few, actually, but most of them can wait until we're on the shuttle. The most important one I've got right now is whether there's a dedicated medical channel or if that's reserved for team leaders."

The K'tulu blinks in surprise at your question, clearly not having expected it before quickly nodding. "That's right, I forgot to inform Miss Owens of that. I apologize." He replies, apparently genuine despite the somewhat sour look on his face. In another moment he turns around, apparently searching for someone before pointing at somewhat short alien cloaked in white. "Mister Doeud, give the doctor the comm code for the the medical channel. Everybody else get loaded up. We're in the air in ten. Team leaders! Gather around."

As soon as the last words were spoken the company broke up to their various groups, most of them heading towards one shuttle or the other, while Angelicia and the rest of the team leaders moved closer around the lieutenant. Once the crowd has dispersed enough for you to see him again, you start moving towards the alien in white, offering your hand to him as the two of you reach each other.

A moment of silence passes between the two of you as you both take stock of the other. The majority of his body is covered in robe that almost reminds you of a burka, with a much thinner veil over the lower half of his face, despite that though it's clear that his form is much more lithe than you'd typically expect with a human. From a first glance, it doesn't look like he's carrying much in the way of weaponry, only a simple-looking pistol holstered on his hip, while a satchel resembling your own first aid kit is slung across his torso.

"So, you're another medic then?" You ask, nodding at the med kit as you extend your hand to him with a grin, "I'm Jack, by the way. Most of my friends call me Doc, but I somehow I doubt that'd fly with you."

The alien blinks owlishly at you as he stares at your hand, almost making you feel like you're being rude before he slowly accepts it, only to shake his head. "No...I'm in charge of the comm channels. I used to be a doctor, but my license was revoked." He replies in a matter of fact tone, before releasing your hand from his own three fingered one and tapping his wrist. Seconds later a prompt to join the Antusyac Expedition Medical Channel blinks into existence on your comm unit's limited HUD.

You find yourself at a temporary loss for words at his casual admission, instead taking your moment of silence to quickly accept the invitation before returning your attention to the conversation. "Ah...I see. Well, in that case do-"

"Does our group have another medic?" He asks quickly, seeming to smile a little under his veil, "No. Lieutenant Nueve's platoon does have another....official medic, however. Of course, being in charge of my company's comm frequency, I'm on the medical channel as well. In case there are communication problems."

You can practically feel his amusement as you look at him in disbelief, "I see...." You start, wondering momentarily if this is how other people feel while talking to you.

"I don't suppose that you might have medical records for your company then? For...emergency communication purposes?" You ask carefully, feeling a mixed rush of relief and slowly dawning frustration as the alien nods quickly.

"Naturally. Who better to keep the medical records than the comm guy?" He asks as if it were the most logical thing in the world, "At any rate, it would appear that the lieutenant is finished with his meeting. It would likely be best if we board the shuttles." He pauses for a moment, seeming to consider something, before nodding to himself, "It seems like you've been left somewhat out of the loop, Doctor Jack. The flight plan has me on the A shuttle, but if you would prefer I could board your own shuttle and bring you up to speed. On the communication protocols for the medical channel, of course."

You look at Doeud somewhat skeptically for a moment, "Not that I'm complaining, but I think that Nueve would have a fit if you just jumped from one shuttle to the other."

"I'm sure he would get over it." He replies, clearly unconcerned with the possibility. "Besides, as long as I get the okay from my team leader it should be fine. After all, I'm just trying to help out one of our medics with integrating his outdated commlink with our systems."

You quirk an eyebrow at the explanation, though you do have to admit that it does seem like a plausible explanation. Of course, you still don't know who the other medic for the company is, and if they're on the same shuttle as you are, then the other shuttle could be left completely without a medical professional...or communication specialist. Assuming nothing happens then that'd probably be fine...but considering the circumstances, that may very well be a big if.

You debate whether or not it would be worth the risk to let the alien come along for a moment before shrugging. "Alright, as far as I know most of Nueve's people are on the other shuttle anyways. I'm sure that they can handle it if something comes up." You reply with a small nod, drawing a trilling laugh from Doeud.

"I'm more than certain that the lieutenant and his platoon can handle themselves, Doctor. I'll need to go and let my team leader know that there's a change of plans, I'll see you on the shuttle." He replies, moving to leave before seeming to realize a mistake, "Oh, I almost forgot. You may call me Enque, if you wish. If not, Doeud works just as well." With that, and before you can say anything else, the supposed comm specialist hurries away to the first shuttle, while you're left shaking your head as you turn to make your way towards the second ship, only to find Angel waiting for you halfway there.

"That took longer than expected." She says, looking curiously at Enque's retreating form before starting to move towards the shuttle next to you. "And you've got a weird look on your face. Is everything okay, Jack?"

You nod slowly, "Yeah, it's fine. A bit weird, but fine." You reply absently before shrugging and picking up the pace slightly, "By the way, looks like we're going to have an extra person on board. Doeud's going to fill me in on what I'm missing on the way there."

The mechanic shrugs casually, "Alright, he's the other freelance medic, I take it?"

"Nope. Apparently he's their comm specialist." You supply, grinning at the familiar look of confusion on your friend's face, before finally taking pity on her and elaborating, "Enque used to be a doctor...his license was revoked. So now he's a comm specialist...with full access to his team's medical records."

A dawning look of unease spreads across Angel's face at the information while the two of you board the shuttle and find your seats. "Right...remind me to make sure that you're the only one that works on me, Doc."

A shit-eating grin spreads across your face, immediately drawing a groan from the punk as you open your mouth, "Oh, well that's an awful lot of commitment, Angel. Are you sure you're ready for that?" You ask teasingly, receiving a glare in response as she struggles to keep a straight face.

"You're an ass, Doc. And it's too early for this shit." She mutters, making both you and Abi laugh as the two of you sit down next to her.

"So you keep saying, yet you keep 'im around. Maybe eet would be best to move on?" The younger girl interjects enthusiastically, leading the mechanic to roll her eyes in exasperation while you offer a mock glare.

"Well, if you want to try and explain to Lizzie why you're the one bandaging Angel's cuts instead of me then go right ahead." You retort, glancing around momentarily before letting out a haughty huff. "Maybe Julius would appreciate me more."

The swordsman lets out a surprised and uncomfortable cough at your declaration, "Ah...I appreciate the offer, Doc, but...no thanks." He answers uncomfortably, his left hand finding the back of his neck as you manage to put on a convincing display of disappointment for all of five seconds before letting out a chuckle.

"I'm only kidding, Reece." You offer, shaking your head in amusement as he lets out a sigh of relief, "Besides, I'm sure that Tobias would be devastated if I stole you before he had the chance to charm you." You finish, flashing a grin at him before turning around just in time to see Enque board the shuttle. The alien glances over the aisles for just a moment before making his way towards you, the shuttle doors closing firmly moments before he sits down. "I take it that you managed to convince your team?"

Doeud nods simply in response, taking a moment to set his satchel in his lap before answering, "Yes, everything is in order. I've also got the medical files you asked about earlier. I can't speak for Nueve's platoon, but my team is fairly healthy. There are only a couple of abnormalities that should be noted." He explains, reaching into his satchel to pull out a clear plastic case with a data chip inside. "I myself am allergic to the pain killers that are normally stocked in standard medical kits, along with most of my species."

You nod in understanding as you reach out to take the offered chip before nodding down at his own satchel, "Alright, that shouldn't be a problem. Do you have something we can use for you in your own bag?" You ask while sliding the chip into your codex's case for later use.

"I have a limited amount, yes." The alien answers, though before he can continue a low hum rumbles to life across the shuttle moments before it starts to take off, slowly departing from the bay before quickly accelerating the further out it gets.

Once the shuttle's speed seems to have leveled out you hear the intercom crackle to life above you, "Alright everybody, listen up, this is lieutenant Nuevo. We're now in route to our LZ. Our pilots tell me that aside from some rain later in the day we should have clear skies, so it should only take us a couple hours. If you need to catch up on sleep or maintain your gear, this is the time to do it. Our augmentation unit is already waiting to link up with us, so we'll be hitting the ground running. Be ready."

You can't help but roll your eyes a little bit as the intercom crackles back off, "Call me crazy, but I'm starting to think that the lieutenant really likes the sound of his own voice." You mutter, winning a quiet giggle from Abi along with a smile from Angelicia.

"You don't say." The punk replies, before sighing, "He is right about making sure that we're all ready to go though. If any of you need to do some last minute tweaks to your gear then you should probably do it now. Especially with those raiders running around."

Enque nods in agreement, "You make an excellent point, Miss Owens." He replies, either not noticing or ignoring the brief flash of disdain on her face before turning to you, "At any rate, I've been lead to believe that you have a limited knowledge of xeno medicine, Doctor. If you would like, I could offer a certain amount of advice. Of course, it'd be much more effective if we had a subject to practice on, but in lieu I do have some diagrams that I can show you."

You blink in surprise, not expecting the alien to be quite so willing to teach you, or to have medical texts on him in the first place for that matter. Obviously it would be beneficial to take his advice on the matter, though as you cast a cautious glance around the somewhat crowded shuttle you have to wonder if it might be something better left for later, when you could get a volunteer to look over. Of course you do also have those medical files that he gave you, as well as the rest of the manuals that you bought before the expedition. Of course, there's always the option to forgo studying in favor of just talking with him, assuming he's willing to share.

A brief moment of silence passes over the two of you as you consider Enque's offer before nodding in agreement, "I think that'd be a good idea. I'd appreciate any help you have to offer." You answer, receiving an enthusiastic nod in return.

"Good, good. It has been quite a while since I've had the chance to teach somebody else about medicine, I'm looking forward to seeing if you're as gifted as I've been lead to believe." Doeud says happily while reaching down to pull a tablet that looks simultaneously similar and much more expensive than the tablet you received from the K'tulu. In several swift strokes of his finger he pulls up what looks to be an interactive program before handing it carefully to you. "Very well, Doctor, these are the diagrams I was speaking of before. If you wish you can cycle through different species to study and run scenarios on."

You nod in understanding as you study the anatomical chart of a Lenoshian for the first time, despite having read multiple entries on them from your medical texts. You're somewhat surprised to see that rather than resembling a reptile as you'd envisioned from the name, the species actually appears to more closely resemble a humanoid bird. Finally, after carefully studying the diagram for several more minutes you look back to Enque, "I assume you didn't pull up your own species first just to see if I would figure it out?" You ask, unable to hide your amusement as he blinks slowly at you before shaking his head.

"You would be correct. I'm most familiar with my own specie's anatomy, so it will be much easier to start out here and then work into some of the more obscure species." He explains, before reaching forward to point at another button on the tablet, "Once you've studied the charts to your satisfaction, press that to begin a scenario."

[Continued.]
>>
>>46789178
"Sounds good." You reply, pausing to look over the diagrams one last time before reaching forward and pushing the button. Immediately all of the medical charts blink out of existence, only to be replaced by a model of a Lenoshian writhing on the ground with a slowly growing pool of indigo blood under it, while a toolbar offers a variety of medical supplies for your use.

You quickly go to work, remembering what you read about your 'patient's' species. While you follow many of the same protocols as you would for a human, you make sure to use less pressure on the tourniquet than you normally would. It only takes you a few more minutes to finish the scenario, closing it out by taking a special precaution not to use any Bamordin, the galactic equivalent to morphine.

Doeud hums in approval as you look up at him, "Very good, Doctor. Why don't we move on to a more advanced scenario?" He suggests, waiting for you to agree before gently reaching over to swipe the screen repeatedly before finally pressing the button and leaving you to it.

You run through several more scenarios on Avnari, Lenoshian, and Z'ho'don, and while you end up failing most of the more advanced scenarios, you do manage to successfully save the lives of a handful of your 'patients' before finally handing the tablet back to the white-cloaked alien. "I'm impressed, Doctor. Most new students give up after a few failures. It's good that you're so persistent."

A quiet chuckle escapes from you as you sit back in your seat, "You're the first person to tell me that since I was still in med school." You reply, glancing at Angelicia as she lets out a quiet laugh of her own.

"If I had to guess, I'd say that you were still in your formative stages, Doc. Without your supposed 'roguish charm' that you're so proud of."

You offer the mechanic a grin before shrugging, "Deny it all you want, Angel, but we all know that you're just jealous. Maybe if you asked nicel-"

Before you can finish your sentence the intercom crackles back to life, while at the same time the red warning lights spread across the shuttle flash on. "Listen up, everybody! We're coming in hard and fast. Our augmentation unit just reported that they've had recent enemy contact. No enemies are in the LZ at present, but we're not going to wait for them to come back. As soon as we touch down all gear and administration personnel will be moved to the truck immediately. This includes all medical staff." A wave of frustration washes over you at the lieutenant's words, and as you look to the rest of the team they appear somewhat uneasy at not having you with them on the rest of the trip. "We touch down in five minutes, people. Be ready."

A buzz of voices assaults your ears the moment that the intercom cuts off, most of them curious as to what might have happened and almost all of them decidedly dissatisfied with the situation. As you turn your attention back to your immediate surroundings you notice Enque sliding his satchel back across his chest, "I don't like this...I shouldn't be separated from my team." You mutter to him, drawing a contemplative glance from him before he nods.

"I agree, you shouldn't be." He replies calmly, "I suspect that they will need you in one fashion or the other on this trip."

"I wish people wouldn't say things like that. Even if it's true." You say, a frown pulling at your lips while you glance over towards the rest of your team, "What are you going to be doing? Heading to the trucks?"

"No." You blink in surprise and look back to him, "The only people required to go to the truck are Antusyac Arms' medical staff and administration, doctor. I am neither, so I will not be joining them." He explains, giving you a pointed look. "I would suggest that you consider what you will be doing once we land. It will be chaotic, and most people don't know your face yet. It would be unfortunate if you didn't end up where you were supposed to be."

Before either of you can say anything else the shuttle shudders, shaking everybody inside it as it lands and the doors fly open. As the ramp drops down and the shuttle starts to empty you pull your helmet over your head in a smooth motion before following suit. From your place on the ramp, behind your team, you can see several heavily armored people rushing to the trucks, ignoring all the other people that are starting to secure their gear. You can also see Abi and Tom from your vantage point, and it looks like the rest of your team is starting to reach them now. The question that you have to answer right now, is where do you belong. Surely there's a good reason for the lieutenant's orders, but on the other hand, are you really willing to abandon your team for the relative safety of the trucks?

Where will you go?
>Head to the trucks. As much as you hate to do it, you're part of this expedition, and the person in charge of your part of it has made it clear what he expects you to do.

On the other hand, the orders would leave everybody outside the trucks vulnerable and without a medic. Plus you're putting all the medics into one or two trucks when it was confirmed that our enemies have heavy weapons...
>>
>>46793935
Do we have any military or law enforcement training?
Are we familiar with and trained on the trucks we will be riding, and their defensive specs?
The most likely anti-vehicle weapons found out here on the frontier and used by a group of the size of the hostile group?

Just as we wouldn't respond well to any of these aliens giving us medical advice on a human patient, are we really in a position to second-guess the tactical decisions of the military leader of this expedition?
We don't know if the LT is a political/bureaucratic appointee or if he actually earned his bars through combat.

Sure, if it was the rich backer of this expedition giving the orders, I'd second guess his decisions. But it's not.
>>
>>46794141
I'm not the same guy, and I'm not arguing that we shouldn't get in the trucks, but I also think that we should make sure that we have good comms with our team, or at least Angel, before we get in. And that we're going to be able to get out to help them if we need to, instead of being locked in there with possible bureaucrats.

Indecision tears at you for for several more seconds as the few people left in the shuttle shove their way past you. Finally, with one last look at your team you start towards the second truck, trying to ignore the concerned expressions dominating their face while they load your gear into the lead truck. As you move, your hand flies up to key your comm unit through your helmet, "Angel, do you have me?"

There's a momentary crackle of static before your friend's voice comes over the line, "Yeah, Doc. Where are you? We've got everything loaded in the lead truck."

Your lips form a thin line under your helmet as you reach the truck and start to pull yourself up through the door. "I'm in the second truck. I want you to keep me updated on everything that's happening out there. If you need me at all then I want to know about it." You tell her, no hint of your usual lighthearted tone in your voice. "Does everybody else have access to this channel?"

"We're reading you, son." Tom chips in gruffly, "Are you sure you want to get in there? You've still got time to get lost in the chaos."

A strained sigh escapes you at his question, "I'm not sure about anything, Tom." You reply honestly, pausing for a moment to find a seat, noticing an open one right next to the lieutenant. "But even as much as I don't like Nueve, he's in charge and we need to listen to him until we know for sure that we can't trust him. He'd better have a good reason for separating us, though." You finish quietly, dropping into your seat and starting to buckle yourself into the harness, finding it slightly more difficult than expected with the addition of your jetpack.

"The doctor's right." You hear Freida say over the comms distantly, getting the distinct impression that she'd accidentally left them open, "And I think that he has more than earned our trust in his judgement. If-"

The Israeli's comm unit suddenly clicks back off, deafening you to the rest of the conversation, leaving you to simply watch as Nueve shouts orders to the few members of his platoon that are still loading into the truck. Finally, as the lieutenant drops back down into his own seat and buckles his harness Angelicia's voice crackles back to life in your ear. "We're all ready to go out here, Jack. While you're in there, Tom's our XO in case I fall out of contact. Once you get back out and reconnect you'll take over for him again. We'll make sure you know what's going on out here, if you can do the same I'd appreciate it."

You nod, seemingly to yourself, before keying your comm unit again, "Sounds good, Angel. I'll be back out there as soon as I can manage."

"Alright. Good luck, Doc. Enjoy the air conditioning." With those last, half-joking, words the mechanic kills your own comms again, leaving you shake your head in subdued amusement before turning your gaze across the aisle to see Nueve tapping away at his holo-display once again.

It takes the K'tulu a couple of moments to realize you're looking at him, though he doesn't say anything at first, apparently content to concentrate on what he's doing. Finally, as the trucks rumble to life and start moving forward, he lets out a frustrated sigh and closes the display to look up at your with aggravation, "Is there something you need, Doctor Yarick?"

You feel your own frustration at the alien's continued impatience with you, though you try to push it down in favor of not pissing him off any further. "Actually, Sir, yes. I'd like to know why it's necessary for me to be separated from my team right now. I doubt I need to remind you that nobody else on the ground knows as much about my species' anatomy as I do."

Nueve gives you a measured look, holding your gaze for a while, before shaking his head dismissively, "It's need to know information, Doctor. The moment you need to know, you'll be informed."

"And where you're from hasn't developed FTL yet, let alone simple plasma weapons or even a basic cyber translator module. So I don't think I need advice from a non-military man of a backwoods race."
He'll likely respond in a condescending manner, if past mannerisms hold true.
>>
>>46797470
I fully expect him to go full retard, only for us to point that this is the kind of thinking our military do, and it turns to shit almost everytime because it is proven to not work. All these improvements means nothing if you keep thinking like a caveman, or cavexeno in this case.
>>
>>46796943
You glare at him from under your helmet, "Excuse me, -Sir-, but I think-"

The alien's head snaps back up at you, his markings blazing angrily, "I didn't ask what you thought, did I, Yarick?! Now I suggest that you drop it unless you want a reprimand, which, since you're so new here I'm sure you don't know what that entails, means that your team's pay will be docked, I suggest that you shut up and sit back until I tell you otherwise!"

You bite back the first response that comes to your mind, gritting your teeth as the familiar feeling of your psionics wash over you, forcing you to take a calming breath and try to reassess the situation as the violet glow fades away. As you cast a look around the truck you notice that most of the lieutenant's people are looking back and forth between the two of you nervously, clearly just as out of the loop as you are.

Shaking your head you think about it more. Obviously something out of the ordinary is going on, there's no way that everybody in here would be so on edge if something wasn't wrong. You briefly consider pushing the point with Nueve, though it's pretty clear that you'd have to be pretty damned persuasive or threatening to get anything out of him, and if threatening him went wrong then you expect that having your pay docked would be the worst of your worries. Of course if you took a moment to really calm down and assess the situation some more then you might be able to get more out of him...after all it's possible that you could be overreacting. Alternatively, you could just drop the subject for now, it doesn't look like the lieutenant is particularly willing to talk about what's going on, and pressing him for information will probably only raise tensions for both of you. It might be best to just sit back and read for a bit until you've both calmed down.

You take another deep breath and let it out from beneath your helmet, taking one last hard look at Nueve, noticing that he seems much paler than any other time you've seen him before as he fidgets constantly with the holo-display, seeming to refresh it every few seconds as if desperately waiting for new information. You shake your head in frustration, but don't bother trying to breach the subject with him any further. Instead you reach up to tap your comm unit, waiting for Angelicia to pick up as you send a direct call to her. You sit in a somewhat awkward silence for several seconds before finally the dialing tone ends, "Doc? Is everything alright?"

A quiet, humorless chuckle escapes you at her question, "Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and say no on that." You mutter into your comm unit, doing your best not to draw any more attention to yourself than you already have, "I don't know what's going on, but something's wrong."

There's a brief pause in the call, and you hear the mechanic mutter something that you can't quite hear to someone before replying, "You don'-...shit. I take it your truck commander is keeping the info to themselves?"

You shake your head, momentarily glancing up to look at the lieutenant again before answering her, "Something like that. Whatever's happening, Nueve's not telling us anything. He looks pretty nervous though. I just thought that I'd let you know that you should be extra careful. I wish I knew more."

"Alright. Thanks for the heads up, Doc. I'll pass the word along to the others. Do you think you might be able to get anything else out of him?" The mechanic asks, sounding somewhat pessimistic.

"I doubt it, Angel. Maybe if I were somebody else, but...well, you know where that's going. For now I'll just be as productive as I can and hope that I can get out of here soon." You reply, glancing up at the lieutenant only to notice him staring at you again. "I've got to go, Angel. Be careful."

Your friend hesitates in responding for a moment before finally sighing, "Alright, Jack, you too. Thanks again."

"Of course, I'd be a crap medic if I didn't try to keep you guys safe." You shoot back, a halfhearted grin pulling at your lips before you reach up and kill the call. As soon as it's over you start pulling your codex from its case, taking an extra moment to slot in the chip that Enque gave you on the shuttle. The program lets out a quiet chime as it finishes loading, drawing curious looks from a handful of aliens as you sigh and start getting to work reading.

Thankfully it seems like Doeud was right about most of his team members being fairly healthy, and the files seem to be intentionally simple to navigate. Most of the notations next to the various names remark on the nature of the patient's alien physiology rather than any legitimate issues. You do note that the team leader, an Anvnari, apparently had two of his arms amputated in the past year and is still on medication to keep his cybernetic replacements from being rejected, meaning that he's just as incapable of taking bamordin as Enque.

You manage to get about halfway through the set of files, before the feeling of being watched forces you to drop the tablet down to your lap to stare back across the aisle at lieutenant Neueve. "Is there something I can help you with, lieutenant?" You ask coolly, noting that rather than the disdainful gaze he typically gives you, he's wearing a much more neutral expression, though he still appears just as nervous as he was earlier.

There's an awkward pause as the K'tulu stares back at you evenly, his markings slowly brightening before he lets out a warbling sigh, "I...wanted to apologize for earlier, Yarick." He starts, seeming to have to fight to get the words out.

"While you were still out of line, questioning my orders, I appreciate that you didn't try to do anything drastic. And...I admit that I should have given you at least some information to relay to your team." He continues, pausing as both of your comm units crackle to life momentarily, only to continue as all you hear his a brief burst of static, "I sometimes forget that I'm not in the Imperial Marines anymore, and I realize that with our races' recent...history, my actions may look like a direct attack on your team."

A somewhat skeptical look dominates your face, making you grateful, not for the first time, for your helmet. "I see..." You start to say, before trailing off, not really sure where to go from there. Honestly, from your perspective, the alien's been an asshole at best, and at worst has been actively endangering your friends' lives. You're not really sure you even want to listen to him right now...on the other hand, it's clear that while it's taking a lot of him to admit that he's wrong, he's doing his best to be sincere. You know for a fact that it can be difficult to admit that you're wrong...even if he's only partially doing so.

Ultimately, it comes down to whether you're willing to take the lieutenant at his word, or if you even care about his apology at this point. After all, the damage has already been done, even if that damage is breaking the fragile trust that you had in him in the first place.

>Accept his apology. There's no point in holding a grudge, and in this environment, it'd probably only serve to cause more problems than it's worth.
>Whatever. You don't really care about what he thinks of you or your team. You're here with your friends to work for his boss, and after it's over you've no intention of seeing him again.
>Fuck off. He deliberately endangered your friends' lives. Whether or not they've actually been hurt is immaterial.

You stare the K'tulu down as you consider the legitimacy of his apology before shaking your head as you realize that you don't particularly care. "Fine. Apology accepted...as long as you don't get between me and my job again." You reply, keeping your voice as neutral as you can, even as your comm unit crackles with static again, the out of date implant only adding to your frustration.

Nueve's forehead glows dully at your response, seeming to measure your answer just as much as you had his, finally he nods in agreement. "I should reprimand you for that." He tells you before leaning back with a sigh, "But I can respect your position. As long as it doesn't hinder the rest of the mission, I won't stand in your way. If it makes you feel any better, we're only a few minutes from the bunker, and I got a call from A company earlier, they sai-"

An ear splitting burst of static screams in your comm unit, tearing a shout of pain from you as you bring a hand to your hear in a vain attempt to ease it. Thankfully the pain only lasts for a few moments before disappearing completely, only for your comm unit to burst to life again "-ck! Jack, can you hear me?!"

Your face twists in confusion and a small amount of alarm at the sudden presence of Angelicia's voice in your ear, and as you look up at the lieutenant you see that his own face has paled drastically, even compared to his earlier shade. "Oh thank god. Doc, the scouts just got back from the bunker. They said the place is decimated, fires and bodies all over the place, there was just nothing left."

"Wait, what? They were just wiped out? Do they know who-" You start to ask, only for another deafening burst of static to interrupt you. "Shit, Angel? Can you hear me?"

"-lt was open, Doc."

"What?" A fresh wave of frustration washes over you at your comm unit, though it fades into confusion somewhat as you notice Nueve cursing his own implant.

"I said the vault was ope-" She starts again, only for her to pause as you hear a low whistling on her end. "Oh, fuck! Incoming! Damn it, Abi, get down!"

You suck in a sharp breath as your friend kills the call as muffled shouting reaches you from outside the truck, seconds later you hear a shrill whistling followed by an explosion that you don't just hear but feel. Your heart pounds as several of Nueve's men start unbuckling, ignoring the lieutenant as he shouts at them. "All of you stay put! We'll get out when it's clear!"

"Screw this, my team needs me." You growl to yourself, starting to follow their lead, fumbling with your harness as you hear another shrill whistle before it disappears without an explosion, only for the K'tulu to deliver a rough kick to your armored shin. "Stay buckled, Doctor Yar-" Before he can finish his sentence your entire world spirals into chaos as an explosion rips into the front of the truck, sending shrapnel soaring through the air and leaving you with ringing ears, despite your helmet's attempt to filter the audio.

Several warnings flash on your HUD, though you ignore them as you struggle to get your bearings back, only for your world to be rocked all over again as another explosion slams into the truck's side blowing a gaping hole in it and sending it tumbling onto the opposite side, leaving you hanging in the air, held there only by your harness. You're not entirely sure how long it takes you to focus your thoughts again, but when you do you can clearly hear gunfire and scattered explosions through the hold in the truck.

You swallow thickly, noticing the distinct taste of blood in your mouth as you cast your gaze around wildly, finally actually taking notice of the flashing warnings on your HUD. 'WARNING: SHIELD INTEGRITY AT SIXTY-FIVE PERCENT. TAKE IMMEDIATE COVER.'

[Continued.]
>>
>>46803715
You blink several times before fully comprehending the message and have to wonder exactly how you're still alive, before belatedly realizing that your shield must have absorbed the brunt of the shrapnel. Unfortunately, as you reach for your harness and let out a groan, the same can't be said for the force of the blast. It takes a few moments of fumbling with your harness before you manage to unbuckle it and fall forward unceremoniously. "Ugh...did somebody get the plate on that bus that hit us?" You manage to get out as you stumble to your feet, only to feel your stomach drop as you take in your surroundings.

The interior of the truck is practically painted in several different colors of blood from Nueve's platoon members. A quick sweep of the the compartment makes your heart sink as you realize that none of them could have possibly survived their injuries. Just as your comm unit tries to crackle back to life, you hear another groan from behind you, making you jump as you turn around to see lieutenant Nueve laying halfway into the cab with a large shard of shrapnel penetrating his left arm, while his right leg looks to be trapped between the crushed dash and the driver's seat at an odd angle. "Damn...and I thought I was having a bad day." You mutter to yourself quietly, shaking your head as the alien cranes his neck to look at you, his face contorted in pain.

"D-doctor Yarick. You're alive, good. I-" A rough, wet sounding cough wracks his chest, "I thought I was the only survivor at first. I can't feel my leg, though. Do you think you can help me pull it out?" He asks weakly.

You turn to look at his leg again and wince, "That's in there awfully tight, Nueve. And from the look of you, I'm not sure it'd be a good idea to move you without proper equipment." You explain kneeling down to get a better look at him just in time for your comm unit to finally crackle fully back to life,

"Jack!? Can you hear me!? Shit, please be okay..."

You wince at the sudden influx of sound, your ears still ringing from the explosions, as you cue your comms, "Yeah, I'm alright, Angel. In one piece anyways. What about you guys? Is everybody okay?"

"Doc! Thank god, we saw your truck get hit, we thought that...well, that doesn't matter now. What's important right now is that we need you here! Abi took a bullet to the chest, and I think we've got the bleeding under control, but it sounds like she's got a collapsed lung."

You feel your blood run cold at the news, your eyes quickly moving from the lieutenant's ragged form to the heavy metal door past the hole above you, just barely sitting open. "What all do you have in your med kit? If I talk you thr-" You start, only for the mechanic to interrupt you.

"I don't have anything for that. All I had was tourniquets, pressure bandages, and quick clot powder, and those are all gone now. Please, Jack, if you don't get here soon I think we're going to lose her!" It's clear from her voice that your friend is deadly serious, and from the gunfire echoing from outside the truck and on her side of the line, it's obvious that whoever it is that's attacking you isn't letting up at all.

Another pained groan from the alien next to you pulls your attention back to your current surroundings. It's clear that Nueve needs immediate medical attention as well, and while you hate to move him, the only way you're going to be able to help both him and your friend is to do exactly that...though with his leg trapped, it's going to take either a miracle or drastic measures to get him out of this truck without the proper equipment. "How long?" You ask, your mouth setting into a thin line as you look over the lieutenant's form and wait for the your friend's unsure reply.

"I-I don't know, Jack. Maybe twenty minutes, assuming that one of these...things don't overwhelm us. Reece and I have been switching out, but we're both at the end of what we can do without you."

[Continue.]
>>
>>46804828
Well shit. Twenty minutes isn't a long time, and it's even less considering the amount of time it will probably take you to find your friends on what you can only assume is a chaotic battlefield. As you look down at Nueve, you know that he's not going to make it much longer without medical attention either, and if you just leave him here then he's almost certain to die. You could try and pull him out, and risk further injury by moving him, but if you do that then you'd be using valuable time and supplies. Of course, for all you know, by the time you get to your friends, Abi could already be gone...or she could still have much longer than Angel thinks she does. It's hard to estimate that kind of thing in the first place, and your friend would be the first to admit that she's not trained for this kind of thing.

You grit your teeth as you consider the facts as quickly as you can. It looks like you're going to have to make a call here...and you're not sure that you can save everybody. What do you want to do?

>Concentrate on Nueve. There's no guarantee that you'll be able to reach Abi in time anyways, and there's a much better chance of saving the lieutenant if you start working on him now.
>Try to stabilize the lieutenant before leaving to help Abi. You can't just leave Nueve to die, but you're sure as hell not going to abandon your friend to her fate either.
>Take Nueve with you. Try to pull his leg from the wreckage. There's a lot of risk involved, especially in moving him, but if you can get him out then you might be able to save both him and your friend.
>Take Nueve with you. Amputate his leg. There's no saving his leg, even if you managed to pull it free or someone had the right equipment, you doubt that it would do him any good.
>Prioritize Abi. You don't want to abandon the lieutenant any more than you do Abi, but you know Human physiology better...and you can't abandon your friend.

You quickly evaluate all of your options as you stare down at Nueve, briefly considering writing him off as a loss, before shaking your head with a sigh and let your hand drift down to the plasma whip hooked to your belt. "I'll be there as soon as I can be, Angel. I've got to take care of something here before I leave though. Can you think of a signal so I know where you are?" You ask quickly as you rest a hand on the lieutenant's thigh, just above where you plan to cut it, drawing a pained cry from the alien.

"What?! What do you-" The mechanic asks incredulously only to stall in her question as she hears the scream. "Oh...I see. Alright, just...please get here as quick as you can. If not..."

"Angel...trust me. I'll be there. If I have anything to say about it, then nobody else aside from the bastards that did this are going to die today. Tell Abi she's going to be okay." You reassure her, pulling the whip from your belt and lining it up above the lieutenant's leg. "Okay, Nueve..." You start, only to realize that the K'tulu is still writhing in pain rather than paying attention to you. "Damn it...lieutenant! I need you to pay attention to me."

As the platoon leader's eyes focus on you, the markings on his face flaring brightly at the pain he's clearly trying to suppress you try to ignore the mechanic's labored breathing on the other side of your comm link, "You have my attention, Yarick." He manages to grit out.

"Good." You nod, before sighing, "Look, I know you're not going to like this, but there's only one way I'm getting you out of here with your leg trapped like this. Do you understand what I'm saying?"

Nueve's eyes widen in a mixture of fear and denial as he realizes what you're getting at, markings flashing wildly for a moment before fading back down to simple pain rather than panic. "You're sure?" He asks somewhat weakly, waiting for you to nod before groaning and letting his head slump to the floor beneath him.

"Okay...do it. Just make it quick if you can."

"As quickly as I can manage, lieutenant." You confirm, turning your attention back to his leg and gripping it more tightly, drawing another shout of pain and a line of curses from him. You thumb the lethal switch on your plasma whip, hovering above his leg for a few seconds as you have the slightest moment of hesitation, before pulling it down. Nueve lets out a somewhat sickening scream, which quickly mixes with the the a sizzling and popping sound. "Almost done, Nueve, just hold in there." You tell him, stomach turning somewhat as the smell of charring flesh and bone makes you wish that you'd had the foresight to temporarily disable your helmet's olfactory sensors.

Finally your whip cuts through the back side of the officer's leg, the plasma dropping and sizzling against the floor before you quickly switch it off and hook it back on your waist. You lift your hand up off Nueve's thigh, not the least bit surprised to see it start thrashing the moment you do, and decide to give him a moment to recover while turning your attention back to Angelicia. "How are things going on your side, Angel?"

The distinct sound of a rifle chattering away fills the link for several seconds before you hear the mechanic's voice filter through it again, shouting for a sitrep before focusing on you. "About the same as the last time we talked, Doc. Reece is trying to keep her stable, Tom took a round to the arm, he says it was just a graze but it's wrapped up as best as it can be with what we have right now anyways. How's Nueve?"

You push yourself up to your feet, glancing down at him as you hurry over to the heavy door in the back of the truck, "Doing about as well as can be expected. We're going to be moving here soon." You grunt, pushing forward and forcing the door to swing out and crash against the side of the truck, forcing you to duck down in fear of attracting the attention of any nearby enemies.

"What do you have for me as far as a signal goes?" You ask her, before peeking around the corner of the wall in an attempt to see if you can get a better idea of what's happening outside. Unfortunately the only thing you manage to determine for sure, aside from the expected chaos of bullets and explosions, are a small huddle of the mercenary company that Enque belongs to taking cover behind what's left of what looks like an office building wall and firing at something behind you.

"Well, we've got blue smoke, but were in what's left of a first floor confrence room to your east. I can pop it outside if you want. I don't know how you'd get Nueve in here while he's missing a leg though, there's not a whole lot of cover between us." She replies. "We haven't seen quite so many of those...things recently though. You might be able to make it through the window if you book it."

A concerned frown tugs at your lips as you glance back to the lieutenant's groaning form, "I'm not sure that's going to be an option, Angel. We're going to move as quick as we can, but a route with more cover would be ideal."

"Not a lot of options, Doc." The mechanic replies somewhat tersely, "You could swing north and try and come in from the side, it'd be safer, but that'd take way too long."

"No...that's not a good idea." You agree, before another idea occurs to you. "Angel, do they have any air support?"

"Well...a bit, but- oh, no...you're not thinking." She replies, concern overtaking her tone, "Jack, no that's-"

"It's be the quickest option. Assuming that we're clear I should be able to make it a lot faster than if I tried to pull him on the ground." You argue, pulling up your jet pack's controls on your helmet's HUD. "It could work."

"But you haven't even tested that thing yet! What if it explodes?!"

[Continue.]
>>
>>46807274
A sigh escapes your lips, "Look, no matter what we do there's going to be a risk, but we've got to move soon or it's going to be too late." You retort, before shaking your head, "Look, I'll find a way there. You just get that smoke out there so I know where I'm going." With that said you kill the call hurry over to pick Nueve up, letting him sling an arm around your neck as you lead him over to the door.

"Trouble in paradise, Doctor?" The lieutenant rasps out as you slow to a stop, blinking in surprise behind your helmet at the uncharacteristic joke from him.

"Nah, Angel's just jealous of my cool new toy." You quip back, before leaning out to assess the field again, noticing a brand new cloud of inky blue smoke drifting toward the sky in the east. "Alright, so-"

Before you can get into your explanation of what you want to do, the alien lets out a warbling sigh, "There's another option you didn't consider while talking with Miss Owens." He offers, drawing a curious gaze from you while he reaches out another arm to support himself better on the wall. "You should leave me here, Doctor. We both know there's a not a lot more you can do for me right now that I can't do myself, and I know that one of your team members is injured. If I go with you then I'll just be slowing you down."

You cast a critical glare at before shaking your head, "That's not happening, lieutenant. I don't abandon my patients." You shoot back, only to tense somewhat as he lets out a wet cough.

"Ah, so I'm a patient now." He mutters, before shaking his head, "I can take care of myself, Yarick. I'm in no shape to try and force you to leave me here if you're too stubborn to do it on your own, but we both know it'd be faster if you did, and you owe a lot more to your team than you do to me."

[Continue.]

You feel a stab of both betrayal and guilt as you listen to him, shaking your head. He's right that moving on alone would be faster, but you don't like the idea of abandoning him now anymore than you did earlier. Not to mention that you've already invested time into helping him...if you leave him now then you're almost certain that your work will have gone to waste.

"Come on, Nueve, cut that shit out. We need to figure out how we're going to get out of here." You mutter, doing your best to ignore him as he disagrees. Regardless of whether or not you were going to take his advice and leave him here, you're going to need to decide how you want to get to your friends.

Obviously the first that occurs to you is to use your jetpack. Assuming that there aren't any aerial attackers close to you, or that one of the attackers doesn't get in a lucky shot, it would be the quickest and safest route. Of course, you have to admit that's a somewhat big if...and as much as you hate to admit it, Angel is right about you not having tested it yet. Alternatively, you could make the straight run east, there's not a lot of cover but it'd be the quickest route on foot, especially important given that time is of the essence. On the other hand, if you swung around the building and came at it from the side you'd have a lot more cover, but that would take a lot longer, and you're still not sure how much time Abi has left.

[Options in next post.]

Frustration tugs at your mind as you consider your options, and the increasing amount of explosions coming from the group of Enque's team members isn't helping. Still, you have to decide, what will you do?

Are you going to leave Nueve?

Looks like I'm writing to take him with you. I'm probably going to close out the episode pretty soon. I need to get to bed so I can work tomorrow.

>16, 15, 17 - Succes. If only barely.

"Alright...so this is how we're going to do this." You say, finally breaking the relative silence between the two of you as you assessed your situation. "I'm going to pic-"

A frustrated groan escapes the alien at your insistence to bring him with you, "Yarick, we've been through this, I can-."

"Get over yourself, Nueve." You snap back just as quickly, "I didn't amputate your leg just for fun. I'm not going to let you waste my time that could have been used saving my friend just because you want to play at being a tragic hero. Now, I'm going to pick you up and fly you over to that conference room. Do you have a pistol on you?"

The lieutenant's face flashes angrily before dying back down to an expression of resignation, "Fine, we'll do it your way then." He grumbles with a petulant nod as he reaches down to unholster his pistol, "Yeah, I've got one."

"Good. I need you to watch my back. With any luck we'll be able to make it over without attracting too much attention, but I'm not going to count on that." You explain, before turning fully towards him, "Ready?"

The K'tulu wobbles slightly as he tries to keep his balance before nodding with a sour face, "As ready as I'm going to be." He answers, only to groan somewhat pathetically as you bend down to scoop him into your arms.

You wait for him to wrap his free hand around your neck for support before stepping over the threshold and out into the open. Almost immediately you have to duck under a burst of rounds from a mixed group of humanoid synthetics and spindly-legged construct that looks distinctly like a cybernetic spider. Despite the chill that rushes down your spine at the spider-like synthetic you blast off into the air, managing to completely avoid a second, burst of fire from the group.

"Shit, what the hell were those?!" You demand, resisting the urge to look down at your patient as you speed towards the slowly dissipating funnel of smoke.

"The humanoid ones are entirely synthetic constructs that we assume were used by the planet's military before they disappeared." The lieutenant shouts back to you, gritting his teeth as he fires of several shots over your shoulder, "The other ones are something I haven't seen before, maybe they prototypes or something. But they look a lot like one of the local fauna. They move like them too"

"Wait, what?! There wasn't anything about giant spiders on the damned brochure!" You shout, a note of fear in your voice that, mostly, has nothing to do with the rounds that you're weaving through the air to avoid.

"What are- oh no! Pull up, now!" Nueve screams into your ear, the arm around your neck tightening almost enough to hurt even through the armor.

You grit your teeth as you follow the alien's order, finding yourself traveling up the side of a building rather than through the window you'd planned on. "Why di-" You start to ask, only for what you can only assume was a devastating explosion erupts under you, cutting off your words and threatening to send you hurtling off course as the shock wave slams into you from below. "Holy shit!"

Lieutenant Nueve fires off several shots in quick succession over your shoulder, and soon another, much smaller explosion reaches your ears from beneath you. "You're clear for now, Yarick, the other one is out of range!"

You nod to him, despite still not knowing for sure what 'they' even are, before letting off on the acceleration just enough to flip around and head back down again, "Hold on, lieutenant, I'm going to try and slow down as much as I can, but we're probably going to be coming in pretty hard." You shout to him as you level out almost horizontal to the street, speeding towards the barricaded window behind the cloud of smoke.

You feel Nueve nod against your shoulder before tightening his grip again, almost at the same moment you start decelerating in earnest. For a moment you're afraid that you're not going to be able to slow down in time but, as you dart through the window and let your feet drop down to the floor, you manage to skid to a stumbling and clumsy stop. You hear several somewhat familiar sounding shouts, though as you struggle to get your heart rate back under control their words fail to register. "I can't believe you managed that." The lieutenant pants, drawing a somewhat disbelieving chuckle from you in response.

"Well, what can I say? I'm good at what I do." You shoot back, the alien's disbelieving expression as you help him slump down against the wall to rest only adding to your amusement. Before either of you can say anything though, you suddenly remember what it was that brought you here, and you spin on your heel, coming face to face with Reece.

"Doc, glad you made it! Follow me, I'll take you to Abi." He spits out as quickly as he can, before taking off at a sprint down the hall, only slowing to make sure that you're following him. Finally, after far too long in your opinion, he turns into the the conference room where you see Angelicia and Tom standing over Abi's form as she desperately fights to suck in rasping breaths.

"Alright guys, move! What symptoms have you seen and has she gotten any worse?" You demand rapidly, practically tearing your medkit from your your belt as you push past them only to feel your heart drop as you get your first good look at the redhead. "Oh....shit."

Don't die on us Abi.

Seriously though, glad you're back. Do you know when you'll run again?

REEEEEEEEEEEEE
>>
>>46809130
We've already lost one person in the past, I'm a bit concerned that Hawk might be more willing to kill characters than I originally thought.

I hope she doesn't die though...or any of our friends, actually. I bet we'll have a fair chance to save her. I hope...
>>
>>46809163
Who was it we lost again?
>>
I'll be around for a little while, if anybody has any questions, concerns, complaints, confessions of absolute adulation and undying love.
>>
>>46809163

At least a chance to save her i hope, we still well within the golden hour.

Sounds like a sucking chest wound though, fuck.
>>
>>46809174
I don't realy remember his name, but it was that black asshole on the ship. He got shot up in the attack.
>>
>>46809174
Was during the attack of the ship who brought us here, Johnathon Fetherston, didn't make it after we triaged his wounds if I remember
>>
>>46809181
I will find out where you live and stab you to death if you kill off abi
>>
>>46809181
Did we ever look for a cybersurgeon on this planet who can do implant work?
Can we upgrade our implant and tablet later, assuming we come out of this expedition alive and making a profit?
>>
>>46809209
Go for it. I welcome the sweet release of eternal sleep. Just remember who's truly at fault for it, if it does come to pass, seeing as how she never would have been in this situation if you hadn't allowed her to come with you on the Deculion.
>>46809215
You haven't made an effort to find a cybernetics specialist yet, no. While there's nothing stopping you from doings so, it's cost quite a bit for the services of one that's on the level, considering the rarity of human compatible cybernetics, coupled with a general ignorance of human anatomy beyond what can be readily observed on the surface.

As for upgrading your translator implant and tablet later, that should be within your means, depending on the outcome of the expedition. Since the K'tulu's records of your language has been available on the extranet for a couple weeks now it shouldn't be too difficult to find a replacement.
>>
>>46809301
I'd really like some cybernetics that can help our surgery and medical skills.

We should have convinced our friends to invest in more body armor/shields.
>>
>>46809194
Well...we do have our first aid shit on us, hopefully we'll have what we need in there, and if not then we can probably get our trauma kit out of first truck assuming it didn't all blow up.

I just hope that she can hold in that long.
>>
>>46809301

What medical facilities or capabilities does this expedition come with?
>>
>>46809352
I thought we kept our trauma kit with us?

If it was in the lead truck, we'll need to go through that gauntlet again to get to it.
>>
>>46809354
You, Enque, and an as of yet unknown alien under lieutenant Nueve are about it. So you've got everything you've brought with you and whatever supplies and equipment that was brought with those companies, assuming it all survived.
>>
>>46809386
Nah, the trauma kit was too heavy to carry on us, remember? We put it in our crate. We kept our medic bag on us. I think that's right anyways.
>>
>>46809388

Are there provisions for medivac?
>>
>>46809398
Well I guess, then the first job is to stabilise her and then evac to a place we can treat better.
>>
>>46809404
Not this close to the bunker. You'd have to evac her to at least the safe zone in order to get her air lifted to a real hospital. That said, if you manage to stabilize her, and any of the vehicles survive the ambush then she won't be the only one getting a medivac.
>>
>>46809440

Is there any contact from the other teams?
>>
>>46809488
The only report you've had about A company is that there's nothing left of their base camp. You're already linked up with the mechanized augmentation unit, though you know that at least a third of them aren't around anymore.
>>
>>46809507
Nothing on the combined medic channel?
>>
Just saw this! Hawk you faggot! Welcome back!
>>
>>46809514
Ah, I misunderstood. Sorry about that. You've heard scattered messages on it, but between the static and the chaos you haven't paid a lot of attention to it. It may be prudent to see what's going on with the other medics as soon as possible though.
>>
>>46809565

Need to coordinate a fighting retreat to pull back and consolidate forces.

Whats the make up of the merc forces on the expedition? Don't even know whats the make up of Company A. What others are there?
>>
>>46809565
>medivac
Does anyone even know the channel or procedure to call in a medivac?
Or the authority to do it, besides the LT?
>>
>>46809583
You know from the briefing that Enque's team specializes in demolitions and carries a lot of heavy weapons, the obvious exception being him. The LT's platoon mostly consists of infantrymen, a handful of combat engineers, and administration personnel.
>>
>>46809587
Enque will know the channel, as well as the procedure, though whether or not he has the authority would depend on the situation, I'd say this likely qualifies. Additionally the LT's medic has the authority, along with Nueve's XO. Though you haven't met her yet.
>>
Well, I think I'm gonna head to bed. The thread's archived so I'll see you all next time...which is probably going to be sometime early next week, depending on what my new schedule turns out to be.
