Uh oh.

You reach into your coat and quickly grab out a lump of fluff.
Whoops.

You take your coat off and start dusting your shirt down. The whole time Atsuko is trying to look away, maybe to pretend that she isn't seeing this.

When you feel that you've been properly de-furred, you throw your coat back on and sit down.
There's a huge wad of brown hair in your hand right now. You could knit a new Tuile with it.

"So, are you done yet?" Atsuko asks.
"For the moment." You discard the hair and try to change the subject, "Whatcha up to today?"

"Well, I was going to go shopping, but half of downtown is closed off."
"Ooh, they took it that seriously, eh?"

"You bet. Someone making an attempt on a Gallete princess while in Biscotti has made them try to take it seriously. So they're doing a full investigation thingy." Atsuko sighs. "I'm amazed you didn't get roped into it."

"Aye have a way of avoiding these things."

"In that case, why don't you tell me what you were doing last night?"

"Lass-"

"Not that!" Atsuko pouts, "I mean the bar last night. Yuuki came back drunk as she could be."

Uh oh, you forgot.
"Yuuki was still staying at the shrine?"
"Yup, Anna doesn't want her coming back."

That's right, her summoner Annetta is very protective of Yuuki.
Oh, that probably doesn't bode well if she saw Yuuki come back drunk last night.

"So, how mad was she?"
"Just saying." Atsuko bites her lip, "You may want to stay away from the shrine for a while until Yuuki recovers. She had a wicked headache this morning."

"You sure do." Her tail wags behind her.

"Whatcha wanna do?" You down the rest of your drink. "I'm game for anything ye want."

"Well, I wanted to go get food, but I guess that's not happening."

You think about it for a few minutes. That means your afternoon drink, your post-afternoon drink, your evening drink, and finally your before-bed drink might be postponed if the bar isn't operational.

This is disturbing.

Oh! You just remembered something important.

"Hey, I was gonna ask Gougere about that little girl we found. Apparently she might know something about it."
"What did you find out about her?"

"Something about her being the 'Black Knight heir'. Some kind of curse in the Gallete royal family. Aye don't know, still no excuse to lock a little girl up in the room."

"..Did Charlotte know about that?"
"Of course not, she wants to meet the little girl. She's 'er sister, technically, after all."

Atsuko thinks about that for a few seconds, and her face turns to a frown.
"People who do things like that should be shot." She retains that frown, "Shot and thrown outside the barrier."

"'ey, we're more alike then ye think."

She stifles a smile as you two stand up and make your way to the library.

Inside, Gougere is where she normally is.
Only, there's a slight difference now. She's cornered in her chair by one of Biscotti's knights, Bennet.

"So, that's your story?"
"It's the only story I have. I was here all night. Didn't go anywhere." She seems more exhausted than nervous.

"'Ey Bennet." You walk up behind him and tap him on the shoulder. "Aye was there last night, she had nothin' to do with it."
Bennet turns around, "It's just we were asked to question anyone of interest, and- her name came up."

"Take five, Bennet." You give him a pat on the shoulder, "I'll 'take it' from here."

"Sounds good to me." He folds up a little clipboard he was holding and happily walks out.

You turn to Gougere, and she eyes you with suspicion.
"You're not gonna fondle my tail now, are you?"

"Well-"

There's that burning feeling of Atsuko staring darts.
"-That'll come later. Right now I gotta ask ye something about a completely different topic."

"Oh good." She sighs, leaning back in her chair. "I am so sick of thinking about this."

"Well, good news is: Ye don't have to anymore."
You smile at her, "But I'm here fer-"

You think of something else that you'd like to tell her.
"-To tell ye that yer niece, Felice. Had my back the whole night. She'll go far in the guard."
"Oh, I heard." She ruffles her own hair, "She's being questioned, too. Gallete politics for you."

Ah great, you'll have to go bail her out later.
"But anyway, I came to ask about somethin'. What do ye know about the 'Black Knight Heir'?"

Her hands daftly reach into a pile of books on the dresser and then pulls one out from near the top.
"I was looking into this recently." She flips to one of the pages. "It's an old curse the Gallete bloodline has which stretches back a very long time. Apparently every four or so generations, there's a black-haired kitten born. All of Gallete royalty has white hair. That kitten is rumored to be the reincarnation of a tyrant that existed long before any of our books go."

"So that's it? It's just haircolor?"

"Well it's just a rumor, I got this book on myths of the occult."

"She's fine, but-" You think of the proper way to say this. "The butler, the one aye caught? He said she was the black knight heir."

Gougere seems, almost confused.
"That's impossible. She's-"
You can tell Gougere is trying to find the right words to say it.

"-She's only half royal blood. Surely that doesn't count. Charlotte turned out just fine. She just has black hair."
"What do ye know about this, then? Does it matter if it's only half-royal or does it have to be a proper princess?"

"I don't know, does it?"

"Lass, that's why I'm askin' you."
"Well, your guess is as good as mine." She shrugs, "I'm just saying, I think that butler is a coot."

"And if- let's say it were true. And she is this reincarnation of a tyrant? Ye know, the butler said this happens once every four generations. Ye think maybe that has somethin' to do with it? Could we trace it back and figure it out that way?"

She's silent, "I'm not sure how you would count a 'generation' in this case. If you count Charlotte, then no, this girl is the 5th generation. If you count Charlotte and her as part of the same generation, then yes. But then why wouldn't it be Charlotte and not Esther?"

"Well, don't worry about it then." Atsuko happily chimes in.

"If it is true though, Atsuko." Gougere seems serious, "Then she can't live in Gallete anymore. Who knows how many people actually believe in that sort of thing. Keeping her hidden from me in the castle was a work that required dozens of people to keep secret. All of them must have believed it."

"If the problem is where she goes, there's already three people willing to adopt her."
"Add me to that list." Atsuko raises her hand.
"Me too." Gougere states.

"No, unfortunately." She puts the book down. "I've been trying to for a while, and it never lead anywhere. It was a one-night stand with someone whom he only found out about in secret."

"Well, at the very least, do we know if 'Esther' was her real name?"
"How should I know? I thought it was something different for the longest time."

That's kind of depressing, Gougere.
"Do ye at least know where she was born?"

"That I do know. She was born in a village outside of Gallete castle."
"So findin' her mother should be easy, right?"

She gives you that look.

"Aye, well at least I can't say I didn't try."

"Give it some time, Jack." She sits back in her chair, "We should wait for all the investigations to settle down before we have Charlotte meet her."

"How did ye know she wanted to?"

"Trust me, I know Charlotte well enough to guess that." She smiles.

"Huh, that's a real problem then. Tryin' to think of who is gonna adopt her."
"Well, feel free to ask if you need any help trying to decide."

"One more question, when I was out on the town, I found a kid who was really good at pickin' locks. Homeless kid in Gallete, has a rich sister he's lookin' for. Anyone ye know?"
"That's kind of vague." She shrugs, "Try to get a description of his sister, and maybe I can help."

"Alright."

You say goodbye and part ways for now. You need a bit more information from the kid before you can even start to help with that.
Of course, there's a lot of things you need right now.

Like, maybe a towel to wipe this sweat off your forehead. Why are you sweating? It feels cool in here.
Maybe it's because you can feel a certain presence just below your chin.

"Hey Jack." Madeleine says, her tail gently brushes against your adam's apple.
