You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and you're feeling rather embarrassed at the moment. After putting your heads together and coming to a series of wrong conclusions, you and your fellow Captains have finally located Head Captain Yamamoto: right in the heart of the Seireitei.

“How did we not see this coming?” you moan, more angry at yourself than anyone else. “We're supposed to be smarter than this!”

Kaoru shakes her head in disbelief. “The Head Captain must have come here hoping he'd be found faster this way.”

“The barriers down there were damaged during our hollowfication,” you realize, recalling that one hundred years ago the destruction of the Sōkyoku hill from within was a very real possibility. “They're still weak in some places. I can't imagine they'll survive if were not careful.”

“Must have been one hell of a party,” Kaoru grins. “Almost makes me wish I'd gotten an invite.”

All joking aside this is a serious problem. Even your own senses, impressive though they may be, can't hope to penetrate to the space inside the barriers. The only reason you could locate the Head Captain at all is because most kidō barriers aren't designed to be airtight, as not only would that suffocate anyone inside it would also require a prohibitive investment of reiatsu. The barrier protecting Yoruichi and Kisuke's old training grounds is no different from other barriers in that respect, allowing Yamamoto's zanpakuto to affect the atmosphere surrounding the Sōkyoku hill despite being on the wrong side of it.

It's enough that blood trickles from your nose as your body feels the slight but noticeable effects of moving from cold drizzle to bone-dry air and sunshine with almost zero transition.

“The design of the barrier leaves only one access point,” you inform Kaoru, bringing her into the small fold of people who know about the secret entrance on the side of the hill. “I can't tell who or what is inside, but you can be sure that the entrance will be guarded.”

Therein lies the dilemma: despite an intimate familiarity with the terrain the defenders have a distinct advantage. You suppose a strong enough push for the main entrance could overwhelm any defenders who were posted there. There couldn't be room for more than a handful of zanpakuto at that point, though the ones that are there would likely be among the more powerful.

“Sounds like a natural chokepoint,” Kaoru frowns. “Do you remember where any of the weak spots in the barrier might be?”

You shake your head. “Just the general areas. Nothing specific.”

Not to mention the fact that penetrating the barrier would expose surrounding buildings and nearby shinigami to a serious risk. You have no idea what's going on in there, and until you do it might be unwise to crash through blindly.

Another issue is whether you want to inform the other high-ranking officers of the Seireitei, mostly Captains and Lieutenants, of what you've found. A limited strike team would offer certain advantages, mainly because having multiple zanpakuto like Tenken involved would all but guarantee collateral damage. Conversely, bringing in all of the officers whose swords have gone rogue would probably guarantee each of them a chance at defeating their own sword. If the battle could be spread out beyond the walls of the training grounds, this would draw off Muramasa's support and allow you and Yoruichi a clean shot at him.

PICK ONE:
>Kaoru, please assist me in contacting all Captains, Lieutenants, the 11th Division Third and Fifth Seats, and the 9th Division Third through Sixth Seats.
>Please contact a shortlist of fighters (write-in) and have them join us when they can. We'll go when we have an adequate force.
>Securing Yamamoto is our priority, so we'll go in as soon as Yoruichi catches up.
>I'm going in now. I'd appreciate the backup, but you don't have to come if you don't want to.

ALSO, PICK ONE:
>We'll use the main entrance, overwhelm the defenders there and get inside.

>We'll use kidō to mouse-hole our way in through the side of the hill.

I'm mainly worried that penetrating the barrier will cause everything to be fire.

I meant more in terms of making there be huge amounts of collateral damage.

I feel like this is really unusual for you guys, and that the slow start may have something to do with that, so I'll give it a minute or two longer.

Could we write-in something else Queen? These options will lead to a close quarters stand off between Zanpakutou and shinigami regardless of who goes. Senbonzakura, Haineko, Mirai's Zanpakutou, and Hyourinmaru would slaughter us and/or our forces in that kind of environment.

Chipping the line of defence one at a time is the safer and surer option.
>>
>>46710291
>>46710002
This, our priority is to extract the old man from enemy hands. A fast infil to blind Muramasa and prevent him from using his sword when we escort the old man for the extraction. The critical moment will be when the old man turns off the flames.
>>
>>46710362
I like this alternative in taking down the guards one at a time, but you gotta remember, there's gonna be heavy collateral that will be absorbed by the barrier, and if the barrier goes down while the old man's firewall is still up, the whole hill turns into a living volcano.
>>
>>46710362
How about this?

>Have teams of Shinigami involving a Captain, a vice-captain, and several other seated officers strike at the zanpakutou at random, to draw them off piece meal or to keep them harried.
>Us, Yoruichi, Urahara, and Mirai infiltrate in the chaos.

>>46710396
Thoughts on this?
>>
>>46710471
If we're going in loud with a contingent force and near guarantee of heavy collateral to the barrier, we'll need some people (Kaoru) to spend time and effort to minimize collateral damage by making emergency patch repairs in the ongoing battle, or we can parley with the enemy by telling them the dangers of letting the barrier breakdown. I'm sure everyone understands that the only reason they're alive is because the barrier is containing the flames.
>>
>>46710018
“Kaoru, please contact Captain Kyōraku and Captain Unohana. Inform them of what we've found, and that we're going to breach the barrier as soon as Yoruichi arrives,” you ask your sister, who nods and begins to cast Kakushitsuiaku. “They can spread that information as they see fit”.

In the mean time you ponder how to best go about doing that... fortunately three of the most capable kidō experts in the Seireitei are going to be the three launching the assault. That means you can either punch a hole in the walls and push through that way as quickly as possible, or disguise your presence with Kyokkō and slip past whoever is guarding the entrance. It's as you're beginning to lean in favor of stealth that Yoruichi arrives.

“Ready to go,” she pants. Clearly she's sprinted her way here from out in the Rukongai, which even for her is an impressive pace. “Just... gimme a sec to breathe.”

“I'm thinking we should take it slow anyway,” you suggest, “so you're in luck. Kaoru, I take it you're familiar with Kyokkō?”

“Only enough to teach it to Lieutenant Hinamori when she asked,” she shrugs. “So yes, I'd say so... though I'll admit my close combat abilities have been hindered without Hanahonō.”

“That's fine, we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.”

The three of you take a moment to erase your spiritual pressure and bend light around your bodies, creating what to most eyes would be a perfect disguise before making your way to the hidden entrance in the side of the Sōkyoku hill.

You pause outside the entrance to the training grounds, still disguised after all these years as a dilapidated storehouse in the woods. It's protected both from stray blasts that might threaten it from within as well as surrounded by a barrier that clings to its walls and ceiling. You can hear someone speaking inside, making no effort to hide her voice, so you and Yoruichi immediately come to a halt. Kaoru's ears aren't as attuned for such details, but once you get her to stop as well even she can hear the next outburst.

“I can't believe it!” Haineko pouts, her voice clearly audible through the door. “I always get stuck doing the boring stuff, but being stuck out here with you by myself is the worst!”

“And could you PLEASE clean up your trash?”

A second voice, much deeper, grumbles out a halfhearted response that you can't quite understand.

“I mean, I understand wanting to bring snacks and all, but this is ridiculous! Someone could be sneaking up right outside the door and I'd never hear it over the nonstop crunching!”

Wow, if only she knew.

>Easy as cake. We bust down the door and take them out quickly.

“Hmmm...” Yoruichi muses softly to herself. “If only there were a way to get through that barrier without setting everything on f ire...”

“Not necessary,” you whisper back to her, producing something from the small pouch tucked into your sash. In your mind you can hear the sound of Rosa's palm meeting her forehead.

“Really, now? THAT'S your plan?”

Yoruichi falls silent as she catches a whiff of what you're thinking about using: catnip. “This isn't the time for... oh. I see what you're getting at. That was Haineko's voice, wasn't it?”

You may not be able to see her, but you can tell by the tone of her voice that she's grinning from ear to ear. After gently crushing the catnip between your fingers to release its scent a little more, you slip a little of it in under the gap at the bottom of the door.

It takes only a few seconds for the trap to work.

“What's that?” Haineko asks, sniffing at the air. “It smells... awesome!”

“What're you...” the second voice asks as the door opens. Out steps Haineko, still sniffing for the source of the scent, gradually honing in on you. Whoops, you didn't realize you'd smell like catnip too.

The owner of the second voice is no doubt the fat sack of sad that follows Haineko out through the door. You have no idea why but you get the feeling this is probably Lieutenant Omaeda's sword. Just a feeling you get.

“... there's someone here,” Haineko concludes, her keen senses telling her that something is off about this situation even despite not being able to see you. If you want to strike and knock them out now is the time.

You use hirenkyaku to instantly close the distance with the fat zanpakuto spirit... Gegetsububi, you think his name is, and thrust a hand in front of his face. His eyes open wide as he seems to realize what's going on, then go glassy and vacant as you use Inemuri to knock him unconscious. You suppose there's really no need to slam his head into the ground afterwards, but the sound the impact makes and the crater it leaves are so damn satisfying for some reason.

“If that's what beating Omaeda up feels like,” you grin, “I can see why Suì Fēng keeps him around.”

Haineko snarls as she readies herself for a fight. “You! I should've known you'd show up eventually.”

“You beat up on my daughter,” you reply casually. “But I know that wasn't your fault, so I'll let it slide on one condition.”

“And that would be?”

“Answer every question we ask,” Yoruichi whispers in her ear. Haineko's body stiffens as the tip of a sword taps lightly at the base of her spine.

The zanpakuto pauses for a moment, clearly considering her “loyalties” to Muramasa and weighing them against the fact that you can and will kick her ass if she disagrees. Few other zanpakuto under Muramasa's control are as aware of that fact as she is. She even looks down at Gegetsuwhoever's body, knowing that he didn't even get an opportunity to fight back against you.

Finally, after concluding that her position is hopeless, Haineko sighs. “Okay, fine. Just get this over with.”

“So what's going on inside the training grounds?” Yoruichi demands, Kaoru merely keeping quiet for now. Good sense of her too, to keep her presence here a secret for later.

“That Geezer made a barrier with his shikai,” Haineko tells her. “Sōgyo no Kotowari and Katen Kyōkotsu put a barrier around that while Muramasa tries to come up with a way to reach Ryūjin Jakka.”

“Ryūjin Jakka? Why?” you ask.

“So that he can use its power to keep you shinigami off our backs,” Haineko sighs. “Come on, that's obvious. Don't tell me you really ARE getting old.”

You glare at Haineko, who mumbles something in apology before you ask a new question. “So is anyone else in there?”

“Senbonzakura and Captain Kuchiki.”

Yoruichi sounds surprised, but feeling for his spiritual presence you notice the same thing she must: Captain Kuchiki is indeed absent. “Byakuya?”

For the first time, it seems like Haineko momentarily drops her guard. “I was surprised too, but apparently he wants to help Muramasa keep us zanpakuto free. Who knew?”

“Senbonzakura doesn't trust him though,” the pink catgirl admits, scratching at her ear, “so neither do I.”

“Why are you loyal to this asshole anyway?” Yoruichi asks next.

“Because he freed me from that hopeless old lady you call a daughter,” Haineko declares, looking straight at you. Then she seems to realize what she's said, and looks away from you. Is that a trace of self-consciousness you see? Is it possible that she's doubting Muramasa on her own?

“How is Muramasa holding up?” you ask her, remembering your confrontation with him in your mind. “Like, mentally speaking?”

“So what do you think changed?” you press. “And how is he acting 'odd', exactly?”

“He's been agitated,” Haineko recounts, “and a few times I've caught him holding his head, like he's in pain.”

“Since when?”

“Since the two of you fought that night,” she explains.

You nod thoughtfully. “You mean the time he invaded my mind and tried to “free” Tenkotsuki against her will? You know she's still got a barrier up to protect herself, same way Old Man Yamamoto does.”

“Funny thing, isn't it?” Yoruichi muses almost playfully. “Two zanpakuto going to such lengths to remain with their shinigami, and Muramasa just won't leave them alone?”

Haineko frowns. “That's not...”

“You yourself said it,” you continue sternly. “Muramasa just cares about the power he can get from separating Yamamoto's zanpakuto from him. Or do you really expect me to believe Rangiku was so horrible you had to get away from her at all costs?”

“You bet your ass she was!” Haineko protests. “She was always so respectful, and we made each other laugh, and...”

She pauses mid-sentence as her eyes widen, before letting lose a shriek and clutching at her head. The ashes of her weapon slash at nearby trees and kick up dust, but she at no point aims them at you or Yoruichi. It does take her a moment to get her abilities back under control.

“That's not possible!” she insists, as if trying to convince herself. “Muramasa said... but he told me... what the fuck!?”

“If you want my advice,” you offer, prompting Haineko's head to whip around as she faces you, “I'd tell you to go find Rangiku. However this gets sorted out you're a part of each other, and nothing's going to change that. Just talk to her, fight her if you have to, but I'll bet it'll make sense.”

“Yeah,” Haineko pants, her eyes still betraying her frantic state, “that's what I'll do. I'll explain everything to her, and it'll make sense. I can't waste any more time here.”

Yoruichi allows the zanpakuto to leave in a cloud of dust, her shunpo tearing out little divots as she goes.

“Do you think that was wise?” Kaoru asks, finally speaking up now that nobody's here to overhear her. “I mean, you just sent a zanpakuto at your daughter, and you saw the state she was in just now.”

“Let me put it this way: Rangiku is my daughter because I ran into her and Gin and felt like I had to take them in. She's my Lieutenant because I have complete faith in her abilities, and that includes handling Haineko.”

“Let's go,” Yoruichi hisses, sensing several approaching reiatsu sources. “I want to be in there and ready to go before the others arrive. That'll maximize our impact, especially if Kaoru has time to prepare.”

>You're right, let's go. We'll scope the place out and make our move in the confusion when the others get here.

Shikai releases treasures, so maybe the Bankai creates divine treasures?

The one thing that's gotten me curious now is it seems like the Kuchiki know quite a bit about Zanpakutou. Since I'm pretty sure they were involved in the Baishin incident as well and that they have kidou that seem to be custom-made for sealing away problematic zanpakutou-related stuff.

“Let's go,” you nod, re-applying the spell that's been hiding you. Problem is that this technique can't always hold up to a Captain's reiatsu while in combat. “Kaoru, we're not going to be able to communicate once we're down there, so come up with your plan for how you want to take advantage of the surprise.”

“I'll show him how the Shiba do things,” your sister resolves herself, and you immediately feel sorry for whoever's going to be getting the crash course. It's probably going to involve a LOT of explosions, or a big explosion... or more likely a lot of big explosions. “I'm gonna enjoy this way too much.”

The three of you Captains slip silently into the training ground, and take an assessment of the situation. The Head Captain's wall of fire takes up a large area near the center of the space, and as Haineko told you the fire is surrounded by a second barrier to contain it. The two corners you can see are being maintained by similarly-dressed women in something approaching Victorian dress, one tall and busty and the other small and slight: you're not sure which is Katen and which is Kyōkotsu, but that's clearly who they are. You can also feel Byakuya and his own zanpakuto are present as well, along with Muramasa. They seem to be having a conversation.

But what frustrates you is that there is one regard in which Haineko's intel was wrong: they're not alone.

Yoruichi and Kaoru have gone opposite ways, but you spot a zanpakuto coming towards you. It's one of what seem like four who Haineko didn't warn you about.

This zanpakuto isn't walking towards you, but rather slithers across the ground on the lower body of a white snake, which ends in the torso of a person. You can't tell if they're male or female, but you can tell from here that their face has clear serpentine features: pits under their eyes, slitted pupils, and patches of scales around the jawline being the most prominent. The snake-person is wearing a kimono, appropriate to the old courts of the Heian period if you're right.

“Riku,” Rosa silently observes. “His sword... look at its guard.”

It's a short sword, with a brass guard in the shape of a familiar S. You know who this zanpaukto is, and the thought of crossing its path here troubles you.

Shinsō.

“I know you're here,” Shinsō announces quietly, “an I know you're hidin' yourself. Is it Lady Yoruichi? Or Lady Riku?”

Damn, those pits under its eyes must be for more than show. Gin's manifested zanpakuto can probably smell you, or else see your body heat.

“It's Riku,” you admit quietly. “Knowing that, why have you not struck already? Also... which pronoun?”

“Because I have to agree with those morons from Sixth Division,” Shinsō admits, keeping its voice down. “Don't really care about Muramasa's little plot, I just wanna see how people deal with it.”

“He, by the way.”

“So you're just doing this to mess with people?” you ask. Actually, knowing Gin... that makes some amount of sense.

Shinsō nods in agreement. “It's my purpose in life.”

“So you're not planning to do anything about it?” you ask, cautiously circling away from your potential foe's strong side. Or what you think is his strong side based on where his sword is, you haven't actually seen him draw it yet.

He nods again. “That's right. But I can't say she won't do anything.”

“She?”

With a speed that catches you entirely off guard, a small, golden streak manages to land a hit on your left shoulder. The impact and the speed at which you moved compromise the outermost layer of your Kyokkō's camouflage, but with a serious effort you can keep your reiatsu well-hidden.

You look down at your shoulder to find a crest etched into it. Like the wings of a black butterfly, spreading from the point where it briefly penetrated your blut. It doesn't even hurt, but you know what it means.

“Suzumebachi.”

Your tiny assailant does a dramatic pirouette in the air, like a humanoid bumblebee with a wicked barb for her arm. “Shinsō, you big scaly doofus! What was all that talk just then, huh!?”

If your enemy is of choleric temper, seek to throw them off by taunts: one of the tricks common among the Onmitsu for gaining the upper hand when their stealth has been compromised. It seems as though Suzumebachi is even more easily riled up than her wielder ever was, so your first instinct is to take advantage of it.

“Suzumebachi!” you greet her, “it's been a while. Shinsō was just talking about how he thinks you're all idiots for trusting Muramasa. What do you think?”

“I know!” she fires back immediately. “I heard you talking to him, you know!”

“Sorry, I guess I forgot you were there,” Shinsō apologizes. You don't think he's sorry.

Suzumebachi seems to agree with you. “Whatever! You're totally just trying to wind me up, you always do that to people!”

“Because you keep rewarding him,” you observe.

“Nobody asked you!” Suzumebachi squeals. “You always butt into people's business, you weirdo!”

“You're one to talk,” you scold her. “I mean, look at what you're wearing! What would Suì Fēng think? Does she know you go out dressed like this, showing so much of your chest?”

“It's okay,” Shinsō waves his hand. “She ain't got nothing to hide anyways.”

“You... you take that back!” Suzumebachi shouts angrily. “It's not my fault I'm six inches tall!”

“Even then...” you frown, stroking your chin sagely. “Still pretty much flat. I can see why you'd betray Suì Fēng though, if she ate better maybe you'd be better developed.”

“She has a point,” Shinsō agrees.

Suzumebachi is practically frothing at the mouth. “I'll kill you! I don't need two damn hits, I'll freaking kill you!”

When the explosion hits you, it makes you initially wonder what sort of technique she used. Judging by the patterns as the individual explosions spread she used Hadō #12 as a basis, stringing out a web of reishi that she made invisible with her Kyokkō. But the power and color are all wrong: you think she wove Kongōbaku into the web as well and detonated that at several of the intersections. The resulting blast nearly fills the training chamber, leaving more than a few cracks in both the barrier surrounding Yamamoto as well as the one keeping this engagement contained despite Kaoru's best efforts.

The closest individual explosion blasts Shinsō on his scaly snake ass and sends Suzumebachi tumbling through the air like a ragdoll, squealing all the way. By using shunkō you're barely able to keep your feet to exploit the opening. With all your might you kick off the ground, shattering stone all around your feet and making a ninety degree turn as you overshoot the barrier in the center of the chamber.

He's there. Muramasa is standing right in front of you, shielding himself from the blasts. You have him, one step away...

… until a familiar sword crosses with yours, stopping your attack cold. On the side opposite you, you can see Yoruichi has met similar resistance.

“You know,” you tell Byakuya as your blades lock near the handguards, “I was always afraid something like this was going to happen. But I always figured you were going to be the one attacking me, and I'd be suspected of treason.”

“Captain,” he replies calmly. “Please withdraw. You're interfering.”

Something's not right with this situation... Byakuya's normally unflappable. That's the image he tries very hard to maintain as Head of the Kuchiki Clan, and over the years that image has very nearly become his reality. He just doesn't get shaken up anymore, let alone visibly.

So why did his blade tremble just now? And is that look in his eyes doubt, or regret? Or is it something else...

You disengage with Byakuya. It seems like he's got something important on his mind, and that like your own questionable deeds his apparent defection has a reason behind it that he can't tell you. Maybe he needs Muramasa to trust him. But in a moment you make the decision to let him leave.

But that doesn't mean there won't be a fight.

“Scatter,” he declares, “Senbonzakura.”

It seems he's regained his ability to use shikai. The blade in his hand becomes a wall of floating petals, which stream towards you. It's easy enough to sidestep, and there's a brief window to strike back. Whether he left it open for you or not isn't immediately obvious.

“Hadō 32: Ōkasen!” you counter, sligning an arc of yellow reiatsu from Kobara no Tachi towards Byakuya, who raises his hands to counter your attack with his petals. They move faster when he directs them manually like that, based on the few times you've seen it released.

“How regrettable,” he shakes his head, probably for the benefit of Muramasa. Behind them you can see Yoruichi having a similar battle with Senbonzakura himself who has released Bankai. Yoruichi is keeping up the pace, and hasn't yet released Raijūsenkō... this is dragging on too long. Come on, Byakuya.

“Byakurai.”

A lance of lightning streaks over your left shoulder as Byakuya raises his fingers to counterattack from behind Senbonzakura's petals, just in time to be seen by the shinigami officers who burst through the rock surrounding the entrance of the training cavern.

“I know your zanpakuto's weakness,” you announce dramatically. “It's purely psychological. Instead of retreat...”

Hirenkyaku allows you to bypass the thinly-scattered blade barrier between you and Byakuya, getting you right up in his face.

“... you have to advance.”

A powerful bolo punch connects with Byakuya's ribcage, rewarding you with the familiar sensation of a rib giving way under the force. He's sent reeling backwards towards Muramasa, but in the same movement he “pulls” Senbonzakura's blades into your back. The weapon slices into you, drawing a spectacular amount of blood when you consider how shallow the wounds are. But that's the point: it makes a good show for Byakuya.

“Riku!” Yoruichi shouts in alarm, leaving Senbonzakura an opening to crack her across the jaw with an armored fist and send her crashing to the ground.

Byakuya seals his blade again as Senbonzakura joins him at his side. “We should go. The other Captains are here.”

“Yes,” Muramasa agrees, opening a garganta. “As much as I'd like to take the chance to kill our friend Captain Kusajishi here we have business elsewhere.”

Byakuya casts one last look over his shoulder at you after Muramasa turns to leave, and gives you the smallest, nearly imperceptible nod. Then he's gone, and the Garganta closes behind him.

All around you can tell that things have gotten serious. Multiple Captain-class fighters have run across their respective zanpakuto... you can feel them now that the barrier has been so badly weakened by Kaoru's distraction. The barrier around Yamamoto cracks and shatters, and the flames around him seem to fade somewhat.

"So, what do we do now?" Yoruichi asks you, extending a hand to help you to your feet. "I figured little Byakuya was up to something, he's too straight-laced to betray the Seireitei for any reason."

"Thanks. Now we figure out where he went."

"Captains," the Head Captain growls. "I assume you have a reason for allowing the enemy to escape? Well?

"What do you have to say for yourself?"

“Byakuya's doing his own thing,” you admit, “so I let him go. Besides, our main goal was securing you. You're the only shinigami left alive who knows what Muramasa can do, and possibly what he's after.”

“Indeed,” the Head Captain nods sternly. “I believe I understand young Kuchiki Byakuya's motivations. More like his grandfather in ideals than in temperament, but I suppose he could do worse. Now then...”

"Do me a favor, my dear," a familiar voice greets you. "I would like you to release our Bankai and meditate. I have something I would like to do."

"Tenkotsuki!" you roar, relieved to have your zanpakuto back. "Manifest, I wanna give you a big old hug!"

The Head Captain, perhaps unused to being interrupted, has no idea how to handle the situation. Yoruichi just snickers behind her hand.

"It is good to be back, Lady Riku," Tenkotsuki replies, "but I fear that time is limited. I believe I know how we can solve this crisis with the rogue zanpakuto, but to do so the side effect of our Bankai is required."

>Are you sure? What if someone works out its true nature?

“Head Captain,” you bow in a sudden tonal shift, “please, I ask that you kindly overlook what I am about to do.”

“And what is it you're asking me to overlook?” he grumbles. “Speak plainly.”

“My true Bankai,” you explain, drawing Tenkosuki from her sheath.

“Bankai: Higeki no Ojō.”

The familiar sensation of this reiatsu fills your body, and in a moment its effects are obvious. Yamamoto's eyes widen in alarm as the flames of his shikai are extinguished almost instantly. Other sources of reiatsu also disappear, including the barriers all around the interior of the training chamber. Nothing within the Seireitei can last long under the stifling presence of Tenkotsuki's shinreiryoku.

“I should think that would be enough,” Tenkotsuki comments. “Rosa? Your insight into the matter?”

“If it's gonna work,” Rosa sighs, “it will have already, Vixen. Don't ask stupid questions.”

“No question is stupid, my foolish young friend.”

“It is when you know the answer, stupid.”

Ah. You missed this.

You release Higeki no Ojō, and the ornate multi-layered kimono in summery greens and blues disappears. Your haori, so far as you can tell, is pristine once more, cleaned of the blood left by Senbonzakura. Tenkotsuki slides easily back into her sheath, at your side where she belongs.

“What was that?” Yoruichi asks, cocking her head at you. “I'm guessing Tenkotsuki wanted to try and disrupt any lingering traces of Muramasa's influence.”

“Yes,” your sword replies calmly. “It was my understanding that releasing the full weight of Higeki no Ojō's reiatsu could accomplish just such a feat. The brainwashed zanpakuto should gradually return to normal, though their wielders may have difficult fights ahead in order to reach that point in one piece.”

“She says yes,” you add aloud, vastly simplifying the explanation you received. “Now, if you'll excuse me.”

You carefully sit in seiza and breathe deep.

All is right with your inner world this time, the azure flames gently flickering all around the otherwise barren volcanic vista. Beneath a cherry tree in full bloom sit two women: the elegantly-clad fox woman Tenkotsuki, and your sinister-looking doppelganger Rosa. Tenkotsuki beckons for you to sit next to her.

“You have grown much in a short span of years,” she smiles as you seat yourself on a lump of lava that looks more comfortable than the rest. “Much more than even I had dared hope.”

Rosa looks a bit uncomfortable. “You've grown on me too, I guess. Don't let it go to your head.”

“What we are trying to say is that the time may be right for you to take the next step in your growth,” Tenkotsuki continues. “Rosa told me how you fared while I was stuck behind my own barrier, and I feel that your body and soul may be mature enough to handle the technique I am about to teach you.”

“Mature enough to handle it?” you ask, puzzled. “The hell does that mean?”

“It means she was scared it would've killed you,” Rosa snaps. “Come on, it's called subtext Riku. Read a fucking book sometime.”

“I know that, loudmouth,” you scowl. “What I mean is that I don't get what changed”

“I suppose it could be called a matter of perspective,” Tenkotsuki explains in her usual cryptic manner. “But it is of little importance.”

“So what is this technique anyway?”

Tenkotsuki shuts her eyes in thought, taking a moment before speaking further. “You are familiar with kidō, of course. Most shinigami are to some degree. But there are some spells that carry with them certain... prerequisites.”

You raise an eyebrow. “Such as?”

“The correct instruction, an unusual amount of reiatsu, and an unyielding will. But there is one other requirement that is far more rare: the touch of the divine, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant.”

Tenkotsuki rises to her feet, suddenly as stern and majestic as a living god given flesh. “The technique I will teach you is the first way of Ura Hadō, called “Sōgenbi”. Do exactly as I say or you will perish.”

"We begin immediately. Time is short."
