Welcome back to the sixth chapter of Mecha Space Pirate Quest, me hearties. As always, you are Captain Roarke S. Starwind of the Iron Kestrels, master of the pirate ship Rhinehawk, and pilot of the terrifyingly oneshot-prone Knuckle Kaiser.

Last time, you put down a pair of Martian Tulwars with consecutive headshots before “Rebel Yell” could even get to the vocals and forced the surrender of the passenger liner Heart of the Sunshine, and presently you are boarding the ship.

However, before that, there's something important I need to give you, along with a little OOC talk. Experience points. As a Professional, you earn them more slowly than, say, a bright-eyed teenage Rookie with no experience and an experimental gundam their father built, but you still progress in strength over time.

Exp in this system is called “IP”, or Improvement Points, and is applied individually to your skills. To raise a skill, you need 10x the IP of its current value. For instance, raising a skill from 2 to 3 would require 20 IP. Raising a skill from 0 to 1 takes 10. I didn't bring this up sooner because I wanted you (and me as well, actually, I'm still making mistakes when it comes to assigning bonuses and penalties) to get used to the mecha combat system first. There are three ways to acquire IP.
>>
First, independent study. This is worth 5 IP per ingame week you spend studying a skill in your downtime. It can only increase a skill to a maximum of 2, but you don't need any help and it's essentially free. If there is a particular skill you want, you can always, as the Captain, take some downtime and lay low between missions to beef up low-level skills. If there's a skill you don't have that you think exists and want to improve, ask me! Some skills will be left entirely up to roleplaying (for example, you would have effectively a massive score in Expert: The 1980's Music Scene if I ever called for a roll there, which I probably won't).

The second method is instruction from someone with more points in that skill than you have. They can teach you up to the average of that skill and their Teaching skill, giving you 10 IP per ingame week. This can be a good excuse to spend time with particular NPCs. By the way, you would need someone on the level of Colonel Stern to improve a skill like your Mecha Pilot +8, which is massive. A +9 in a Mecha skill makes you the sort of person every mecha pilot has heard of, so it's going to mark a fairly significant shift when you hit that point.

The third way, the one that I fully expect will see the most use, is direct experience. Direct experience means that you do things and I give you IP at my discretion. I've awarded 10 points or more for every significant use of a skill thus far, even if it was purely roleplayed, more if it was particularly important or funny (for example, the impassioned defense of your waifus last session led to the large increase in Seduction you're getting...so it wasn't a total waste of time).
>>
So what have you earned so far? 10 points in Intimidation (raising it to +2), 10 points in Oratory (raising it to +2), 30 points in Seduction (raising it to +3), 10 points in Hand-to-Hand, 10 points in Dodge & Escape, 10 points in Fast Talk & Persuasion, 10 points in Streetwise (raising it to +2), and a whopping 40 in both Mecha Fighting and Mecha Pilot for superb destruction of enemy machines. It won't likely be so much in the future, but seeing the way /tg/ determines Roarke solves problems gave me a sense of how he's developing. I've also transferred Seduction from Empathy to Cool, because that's just how you roll.

I also took the liberty of “fixing” the Rhinehawk. It turns out I was wrong in thinking that a starship can fire only one weapon per turn (discounting CIWS systems). It turns out they can fire any and all weapons in a turn, or move their full MA (added to the pastebin along with crew stats), or launch 1/10 of its maximum mecha complement (since your maximum is 50, this means 5 per turn). This meant that upgrading the rear battery to a Medium-size with the remaining space was the obvious decision to take, meaning that you could fire both if you're side-on to an enemy vessel. However, looking at the shape of the ship I used as a reference, that didn't make much sense, so I further changed your two Medium Beam Batteries from Front and Rear to Port and Starboard. It's not explicitly stated in the Mekton Zeta rules that you can have Port and Starboard batteries instead of Front and Rear, but who cares about that? You can now fire both batteries at a target directly ahead of or behind the Rhinehawk, or one if it's off to the side. With that, the OOC talk is done and we can get back to piracy.

By the way, as much as the Mekton Zeta Plus Advanced Technical Manual is a fun read with a lot of lovely systems and customization, one can see the writers slowly going insane as you delve deeper and deeper into it. The example for the Shadow system is...interesting. As I gazed deeper and deeper into the endless skein of numbers, I began to hear the maddening tune that burbles from the mindless flautists that dance around the feet of Azathoth himself, and was forced to look away before I reached the Stupid Mecha Tricks section. I did learn a lot about the pros and cons of I-Fields ("Reactive Shields"), however.

As you jet towards the only visible mecha bay of the Heart of the Sunshine, you send a transmission to Avi to bring the Rhinehawk out of hiding. If you cared to look, you could see Miles and the majority of the Harpies are clustering around the three Tulwars and five remaining Scimitars, towing them and the environment pods their pilots are floating in back to the Rhinehawk. You can salvage your personal kills, the two damaged Tulwars, for upgrade parts (you got 3 CP for an Anon making the pastebin better, and the two Tulwars are worth 6 each for a total of 16 CP with the one you banked earlier), or have them repaired and added to your crew's assets if you don't want the CP (this might be more advisable for more powerful and unique mechs that you can slap an ace pilot in). Your narrator assumes that at this point you want the CP, but has been wrong before and a strong voice in favor of keeping the two Tulwars intact could change the thread's mind.

Incidentally, the ship presents a similar situation. You could always release it after looting its mech bays, cargo, and the VIPs. Or you could sell it, giving you a few months of downtime to increase your skills while living off the profits. Or you could add it to your pirate fleet. We'll say that the profits from the cargo and the credits you take directly are enough to cover the cost of hiring a crew, although you still have to make rolls to hire pilots. Why? Frankly, because pilots matter more! Even a passenger ship like the Heart of the Sunshine can be upgraded into a formidable pirate vessel, it's of the same general class as your own Rhinehawk despite being configured more as a cruise vessel with luxury accomodations and lots of passenger room.

I'd like to think that /tg/ is at least mature enough not to break character simply because they don't want to interact with any waifus not their own.

I'd like to.
>>
>>46698271

I would. Essentially, they automatically successfully parry every last incoming attack at you. Sounds great, right? Except there's a catch. Unless you buy a downside for them (such as them only affecting ranged weapons or energy weapons or something), they are incredibly expensive and take up a massive number of spaces. Furthermore, if an attack has enough Kills to bypass the shield, it flickers off. It stays off for an amount of time determined by how many points you put into it, I believe the sample one I made blocked attacks up to 6K and took 3 turns to recharge, and cost at least 10 spaces and an ungodly amount of CP.
>>
>>46698288
Lets sell the Heart since it would take a lot of money to retro fit it into a battleship, when their are plenty of battleships out there we could just take
>>
>>46698299
I don't do waifu wars. However for those that do. Would your waifu approve of you destroying another girl's happiness? Be a better man for your waifu.

>>
>>46698313
Nifty. I hope we get enough CP to get one of those some day a 'No Ranged Attacks' field around us would be a great help in getting up into dudes' faces to wreck them.
>>
What if we keep the cruiser as our base/future fleet's relaxation ship? Space gets boring after all. Though if our current job doesn't rake in the money we could just sell it instead.

I'd want to put Richard and Miles into an upgraded mecha though. The Tulwars are damn better than the harpy that has 2 kills armour on every armour part. Was it established if Tulwars are jetfighter only?
>>
>>46698410
Yes since its Haram to make Mechs bipedal
>>
>>46698389
It would be pretty cool to get a defense that basically forces enemies to engage us in melee combat if they want to hurt us. Wonder how much it'd cost?
>>
>>46698410
>>46698422
Think we could salvage their armor and strap it to the Harpies? Or failing that, Strap arms and legs to a Tulwar?
>>
>>46698466
Salvaging them would be our best bet and using them to buff up both the master harpy and use the other two harpies plus the tulwar to make another custom ship
>>
>>46698422
Then we should give it to Richard and Miles then no question. I definitely don't want them using some junk hardware.

>>46698466
>>46698493
I think the play is to use Tulwar as the base and just add harpy parts to it for any extra upgrades.

Tulwar: 5SP, Torso 12K, Head 6K, Wings 6K each. Travel 1000 meters per turn using both actions.
Harpy: 2K EVERY ARMOUR part.
>>
>>46698313
Got something for you.
http://www.projectrho.com/rpg/cidiagram.html
>>
>>46698509
The master harpy is a Harpy with Tulwar parts and if we don that again we can make another one or two Master Harpies, plus you have to take into consideration what the pilot is used to. Throwing them in a Tulwar when they are used to Bipedals is a bad idea
>>
>>46698509
Not so sure throwing 2 pilots used to mechs into jets is a great idea, but I'm sticking by the idea of going full Robotech.and slapping limbs on jets.
>>
>>46698562
A fair point. Three Master Harpies or 2 master harpies and the tulwar for the ace pilot we got should work fine and help us quite a bit.
>>
>>46698562
Actually it was stated to be a combination of Bluegill and Tulwar parts, meaning we're lacking one half of the parts required to make them en masse.
>>
>>46698562
Harpy transforms into jet or bipedal. I actually didn't know Master Harpy is Tulware/Harpy hybrid. Did we get the stats for the master harpy? Honestly I'm happy as long as our lieutenants stop using the regular harpy. Makes me more comfortable with any action that divides our forces so that their leading officer doesn't get gibbed in one unlucky dice .
>>

"Remember, Richard, if I don't send you a ping on your PC once every fifteen minutes, dump your entire rocket load into the engine core and get out of here because it means I've been shot in the back." You hail Richard's bulky missile boat of a Harpy, and he responds with an unhappy grunt. Although the large explosion probably makes him happy...he's one of those individuals who loves seeing technicolor flowers blossom across the starscape from successive reactor breaches...the idea of losing his friend after such a short time reunited probably grates on him. Or he's just being his usual taciturn self.

You and your handful of escorts land on the bay floor, avoiding a damaged Tulwar and Scimitar that look as though they're being repaired. The airlock closes behind you. A half-dozen individuals in scarlet Martian space suits have formed a respectful double-line around the door, their firearms floating nearby. You dock and disembark, shooting them a casual wave as you ride the liftwire down to the floor and stroll up to them. They're wearing the markings of a Martian PMC group, thankfully, you've heard bad things about the Martian military itself and the 'death before dishonor' ethos it engenders. In your experience most of the sane Martian pilots join a private security corporation and do mercenary work. In true Martian fashion, their pilot suits have a spike topping their helmets, with microweave cloth wrapped around it several times and then around their shoulders, fastened in place to form a sort of short cape or mantle around their upper chests. As you approach, they clap their right fists against the left side of their chests, over the heart, in a Martian salute. The oldest one gestures towards the door, "This way, effendi. Our Captain awaits you."

You glance suspiciously at them, but they seem too frightened to start anything with their escorts gone and most of your Harpies swooping around their vessel outside of CIWS range.

(SPx3) x0.75 with further multipliers depending on how quickly it can come back up if busted. The real kicker is that it takes up Spaces equal to its cost, and you're running short on Spaces.

However, despair not, for you are only 2/3 of the mecha you could be! As it stands, you have the six standard servos. You could additionally purchase Wings and a Pod, but that would also cost a hefty chunk of CP and also increase your tonnage significantly, likely necessitating further CP and Spaces spent on thrusters and still more CP on Weight Efficiency.

Keep in mind, the Rhinehawk can upgrade you up to 250 points currently, and you're somewhere in the 150 range as it stands. There are also other systems that are very useful, I believe the first thread discussed the possibility of a drone system with multiple flying arms, so you can punch while you punch.
>>
>>46698847
Wait, we can add wings to the Knuckle Kaiser? Gundam Wing-style?

And yeah, I completely forgot about the Drone thing. Being able to ORAORAORA with our mech would be pretty rad.
>>
>>46699016
If we do go with the hands it should be called the Star Platinum system
>>
>>46699016
Well, with quick hands we can already attack twice. Linking our fists allow us to hit 4 times a action. If each arm has drones for more punching, thats 16 a act. 32 in a full round.
>>
>>46699050
>Star Platinum
>not Northern Star
Unless we actually find a way to stop time, in which case go ahead.
>>
>>46698787
One thing I'd imagine you'd need to get feet planted on a colony first is massive amounts of money. While other nations certainly posses such, and probably had significantly better industrial/technology bases, few have the specific circumstances of today's gulf nations. What with the ridiculous assloads of money that can be immediately invested with little obstruction/accountability/process, especially if it means showing up your regional rivals. Well that's less the case at the moment given the current economic warfare the Saudi's and company are waging, what with undercutting their incomes and budgets as well as their rivals.
>>
>>46698847
speaking of upgrades I remember you saying that the old captain's master harpy was made from the fighters these guys have. would it be posable for us to scrap some of the jets and make another master work harpy? Just asking because I think it would be neat to have 1 for each of our lieutenants or aces or whatever we're calling them.

Inside the ship is like nothing you've ever seen. You're used to somewhat dingy cargo ships, not gilded corner decorations and rich rugs decorated with abstract patterns that only suggest the form of living things rather than showing them outright. You hear one of your Harpy pilots whistle crudely, and start talking to the pilot beside him about maybe taking a few of these back to the Rhinehawk before the others shut him up. You set a timer on your PC's chronometer, to remind you to send that ping to Richard as you walk along.

Some of the hallway doors are plasteel, and through them you can see luxuries that would be ridiculously inefficient on a pirate vessel. Ballrooms. Small auditoriums. Cafeterias that look like the ritziest dining floors of the fanciest California Station restaurants. Most of the people you pass seem to be serving staff of some sort or another, bowing their heads and avoiding eye contact. One old woman makes the sign against evil in your direction before a younger one that looks like her daughter slaps her hands down and glances up at you beseechingly. You give her a smile, to let her know that you don't mind.

Even the bridge is luxurious. Yours is spartan, with grey and white plastic and cold metal everywhere, while this one is richly appointed in what appears to be real wood. Even the computer panels are inlaid with brass.

The Captain himself is a man on the border between being middle-aged and legitimately old, with deep wrinkles and an impressive walrus mustache that seems to meld seemlessly with his long, steel-colored beard. Like the mercenaries, he has a short robe on over his uniform, open in the front, and a small round hat.

It also helps that the outskirts of Martian civilization were chock-full of Muslims when the Green Men were setting up their cult and taking over the cities with their superintelligence and advanced science, and that the Martian Muslims were preaching against them before anyone else realized that anything was wrong, and that they maintained a guerilla resistance throughout the Great Sidereal War and Hakim the Kinless personally led the Purging of Mars at the end.

"Welcome, Captain Starwind." He bows deeply, spreading his hands wide in a gesture of welcome before straightening up with effort and looking at you sharply, "Great conquerer, I must ask that you swear before us not to harm the innocent people under my protection. Although I know the irony in trusting a pirate, any assurance of their safety would do much to set their troubled hearts at ease. Inshallah, we can do this with as little trauma to them as possible. I know it is impertinent of me to make demands of the pilot of the Black Ogre, but I have no choice. As Captain, I am as a father and chief to the people who make this good ship so special, and a good father must risk his own safety for his wives and children. If you wish to strike me for this, I shall take it as a man, but it needed to be said!"

Captain Uzun stares you down for a moment, then nods briskly, "Then the ship is yours."

Your PC bwoops at you as the timer goes off, and you send Richard's PC a ping so that he doesn't blow the Heart of the Sunshine sky high while you respond, "Speaking of things that are mine. You have a passenger, don't you? Where are they?"

He's spared the agony of choosing whether to answer honestly or try lying to you and passing off a member of the crew as a VIP, because at that moment the doors of the bridge open and a young woman in a long gown enters the room. Her skin is a pale brown, with eyes somewhere between brown and green and long, dark hair partially covered by an elaborately embroidered scarf. Her voice sounds faintly sleepy, "Captain, why have we stopped, and what are those ugly machines flitting around outside my window? Are they beggars? Your smile grows slightly strained, "That's out of the question, unfortunately."

She frowns, "No, it is not. I handpicked my escorts, ten gallant knights mounted on machines from my father's personal stable to escort me to the arms of my husband-to-be. I need no others. Leave at once, or I shall have the Captain summon Sir Ibrahim and have him throw you out of the airlock if necessary. Your mecha are dirty and ugly and I will not have them sullying my most special of days." She wags her finger right under your nose, "Do not try to barter with me! I have accompanied my ladies in waiting to the market many times, and I am well aware of how your class tries to strike deals! If you are hungry, here, take it and Allah bless." She takes her PC out, and taps the tip of yours with it. A notification pops up that a paltry ten credits have been added to your account from the account of one Fatima Hana Ahmad, just about enough for a kebab.

Somehow, that's the most insulting part of all this, that she's trying to buy you off with pocket change. Luckily, you're spared having to decide just how harsh to be, as the other Captain removes his hat and presses it to his chest, his voice low and respectful, "Lady Fatima, this man is the master of the pirate vessel that has seized ours. Two of your valiant ten had their machines destroyed utterly in the blink of an eye by Captain Starwind here, and Commander Ibrahim is in Paradise now."

Her sweet, polite expression freezes like a pond in winter, and then cracks as though a colony was dropped on it. Underneath is a snarling grimace, "You what!? You...you have dared to do such an evil thing and ruin the sanctity of my pilgrimage!? You dog! You scoundrel! How much must I pay to remove the stain of your presence from my sight!?"

"Everything. Well, you aren't really paying. By unwritten sidereal law, all of this already belongs to me." You gesture around sort of vaguely at the entire room, "The ship, everything on the ship, all of your credits..." You snag the PC out of her hand before she can log out of her bank account, and she makes a noise like an outraged goose, a sort of incoherent honk of rage, "Ah, and you. You see, you are coming back to my ship. With me. Your betrothed will see you again when he's paid me too."

Her face is rapidly reddening, you can almost hear her teeth chattering with fury. She stomps one dainty, slippered foot soundlessly on the carpeted floor, "You...you...YOU MAGGOT! YOU SLIME BRED OF THE INCESTUOUS UNION OF GOATS! YOU UNWASHED BEAST WHO FLAPS HIS GENITALS AT PASSERBY! BRUTE! COWARDLY DOG! INFIDEL! HEATHEN SAVAGE WHO CANNOT EVEN READ THE WORDS OF THE PROPHET!"

You realize that escorting her quietly is going to be somewhat difficult. You remove your helmet and pinch the bridge of your nose between your fingers, sighing heavily. The sheer pitch and volume of her voice is beating against your eardrums, and you realize that removing her quietly might not be possible.

Well, fuck subtlety.

You put your helmet back on. You stoop down...she's surprisingly tall, nearly six feet, with wide hips...and you wrap one arm around her waist before straightening up with her slung over your shoulder like a thrashing, kicking Persian rug. "I'll be taking my leave now, Captain. My apologies for making a scene." With a polite nod of your head to the flabbergasted Captain Uzun, you carry the blushing bride-to-be off the bridge and down the hall in front of countless staring eyes back to the mecha bay, stopping only long enough for two of the female Harpy pilots to wrestle her into a spacesuit. She makes several very good attempts to bite them, and nearly leaves clawmarks on their visors from her nails.

Your solution as to how in hell you're going to transport her back to the Rhinehawk without her kicking your mech's monitors in is a simple, efficient, and ingenious one. You ping Richard, get a roll of thick, silvery repair tape from your machine's storage trunk, and you truss her up like a Christmas goose. Her arms are bound to her sides, and her legs taped together. You might need tools to get her out of the spacesuit when you land, but it's worth it, especially since she's your prisoner and you feel obligated to carry her back yourself. Soon, you're back in the Knuckle Kaiser's comfortable chair, worn to your frame by eight years of constant use. Fatima is slung across your lap, wriggling like a cocoon about to hatch into a beautiful, angry butterfly, trying to bonk her head against your leg for lack of any other way to hit you. She seems to have run out of originality in her insults, she's repeated the word 'brigand' repeatedly until you broke your silence to tell her that it wasn't an insult, at which point she began loudly speculating about what animals your parents were. At this point, she's gone through most desert ungulates and is just sort of yelling out the names of various disgusting insects and other creepy crawlies.

Frankly, you have no idea how a centipede could impregnate a camel.

So, what are you going to do with your captive?

By the time you reach the Rhinehawk, she's expended so much energy raging at you that she's practically asleep. The clank of your mech docking in one of the tall, vertical bays along the wall awakens her slightly, and she looks up with a slightly dazed expression through long, inky-black eyelashes.

"You jackal...you...you wolf..." She gazes up at you with sleepy resentment, then closes her eyes again, letting her weight go limp. You carry her down the liftwire, thankful that she seems content to be deadweight rather than continuing her efforts to injure you somehow.

As she wakes up, Lady Fatima starts to wriggle around once again. "My betrothed will kill you and all of your beggars. He is the greatest huntsman who ever lived. He can track a falcon on a cloudy day, you would do best to release me at once, repent, and pray for forgiveness. Otherwise he shall destroy you as the righteous always destroy the impure."

The stream of threats, surprisingly, alleviate the laser-like gleam from a pair of round spectacles on the upper floor of the mecha bay, or at least change it from threatening to somewhat protective of you.

Fatima continues threatening, "My father, Sheik Ahmad himself, greatest landowner on Mars, will butcher you like a lamb, once my husband...the great warrior and officer Commodore Rashad Abujamal himself...strikes you out of the sky. I will watch and I will laugh, and when they are done I will put my foot on your head and press your dead face into the dirt."

"There isn't any dirt up here." You remark. "What's a Martian Commodore doing on the other side of the Belt, anyway?"

She snorts, "Are you truly ignorant of the talks between Mother Terra, Luna, Mars, and the Jovian Colonies? The time has come for the Solar System League to extend the light of true humanity over all the galaxy, and you and all your kind shall be burned out of your hiding places by the holy light of mankind, inshallah! As we did during the War, we Martians stand at the vanguard, with brave hearts and strong souls!"
>>
>>46701738
If she was a trap, that might reduce or negate what we could ransom her for, so I'd be a bit salty. Unless we could convince the trap to join our crew, because anyone with enough fight in 'em to leave scratches in the glass of a space-suit's helmet is somebody I want on our crew.

Plus we can still sell the ship, so we'd still get a nice payday.

>>

On the other hand, you could add it to your pirate fleet, getting an extra bay and some more beam cannons out of the deal. Sure, it would take a while and some more missions to upgrade it to the level of the Rhinehawk, but I'm just saying that both options have merit.

I might not have been sufficiently clear earlier, but by this point the Rhinehawk is repaired.

To be more clear, you've acquired from this venture (money aside) six regular pilots in your brig (in other words, you can convert them with rolls), one Ace who is already converted (the second pilot you oneshotted), the non-ace pilots' six undamaged Scimitars, a damaged Tulwar that you can sacrifice to repair the Master Harpy, and the two broken Tulwars you personally shot down that you've scrapped to turn into CP. You manage to, finally, push Fatima off on two of your crewmates. Luckily, the brig has multiple cells, and you're able to stick her in an empty one.

One of the plasteel-doored cells has the six disgruntled-looking pirates in their red suits with the spiked tops and microweave wrap. Another has a young man in the same sort of pilot suit. It's unclear why he's separated from the others, but he seems to be meditating.

Karen, also, is sort of following you at a safe distance, coming closer once Fatima has been cut out of the tape and dragged into her cell. One of the Kestrels dragging her comes away with a black eye. The mechanic gives you a huge smile, clasping her hands tight behind her back, "I saw everything. Did it feel like it was moving more smoothly? How was the torque adjuster? I fine-tuned your thrusters a little while I was doing the repairs, it should have been a lot more stable in flight."

Before you can answer, Richard pokes his head into the brig, "Hey Dude...er, Captain, the proximity alarm just went off, it looks like another ship just jumped into range of our sensors. We think it's a pirate vessel."

Yes. Most countries from the 21st century exist only as cultural traditions carried on by the inhabitants of the space colonies.

To live on Earth you have to pay a truly, truly staggeringly exorbitant fee, ostensibly to cover the impact on the recovering environment from your presence and to help pay for the remaining reterraforming efforts. In practice, this means that only the hyper-mega-rich can live on Earth. They have weird-looking mecha that destroy anyone who tries to approach Earth without authorization without question or mercy, and much about the people who live there is something of a mystery. Luna is considered a separate entity, sort of a public face for Earth even though the people living there are almost without exception not allowed to visit the planet below. Luna mecha even look different from the Earth ones, a Harpy is generally made using a Lunarian civilian mech called a Sparrow as the base.

You have to dash, but you spare the time to reach up and pat Karen on the head again, "It did great. I couldn't have made them surrender without your adjustments..." You pause for a moment as her smile gets larger, "...or the spiky shoulder armor." She squeals and hugs you. "Karen, listen, I've got to go deal with this. When I'm done, let's have dinner together. You can tell me all about your designs." Her eyes light up even more, and the wrench tucked into the thick toolbelt looped around the tips of her cheongsam nearly falls out with the force of her embrace. She nods wordlessly, and finally lets you go.

"I'll see you when you're done." She murmurs in a very quiet voice, poking her index fingertips together. You grin at her, adjust your aviators, and head off to the bridge at a pace just unhurried enough to keep your cool.

...Which nearly evaporates when you hear the voice hailing the bridge of your vessel. At least it's not the Green Skulls, but did it really have to be him?

Oda Fucking Yoritomo himself, Captain of the Storm Dragons. Like the Iron Kestrels, he only has one ship. It's a bit bigger and a bit slower than the Rhinehawk, packing on a few extra missile bays. Captain Ozark preferred beam cannon batteries, but then again, Captain Ozark was never as flashy or gaudy as Yoritomo manages to be. A Wels-class or similarly sized vessel could still gobble up both of your ships and be hungry for thirds.

The word weeaboo has been extinct for centuries, a dead term for a long-gone cultural phase of orientalism in occidental lands. It's a relic of a time so far gone that it doesn't even enter your mind. Yet if, somewhere, in some sort of encyclopedia of cultural terms, it still existed...it would have a picture of Oda Yoritomo grinning up at you from beneath his ridiculous forehead protector.

He claims to be an heir to the culture of long-gone Nippon, a direct male-line descendant of a Sengoku warlord named Oda Nobunaga who united Japan. The thing is, he's the single blackest individual you know, you wouldn't estimate more than a handful of his ancestors were anything but West African. This hasn't stopped him from naming every single pirate ship he's ever owned 'Yamato', and he's had two shot out from under him before acquiring this one. Or picking up what you've always assumed to be the fake name of 'Oda Yoritomo' in the first place. It hasn't stopped him from amassing a collection of Japanese artifacts ranging from samurai swords to resin models of doe-eyed schoolgirls. It hasn't stopped him from painting his ship with Japanese-style designs of stormclouds with neon tubes of lightning bolts, and from what you remember it certainly didn't stop him from destroying the purity of a reliable Morgan II mech by tarting it up to look like a samurai. He's supposed to be a damned fine pilot, but you're sure he's also got something wrong with his brain.

He's already started what sounds like a speech by the time you enter the room.

"Firstly, I applaud the warrior spirit shown by the Iron Kestrels for continuing to take on work after the tragic loss of their Captain and First Mate at the hands of the dishonorable Green Skulls. Surely, my great sempai Ozark-sama and Dude McCool are smiling to see the honor and discipline of their nakama!" You can practically hear him clenching his fist, "As a fellow warrior poet, I can only mourn the death of the Captain I admired most as well as the loss of my glorious rival!" You have never, even once, called or considered Yoritomo your rival. "For that reason, let me first honor them with a salute! May their shades hear us in tengoku, even if I must walk the path of meifumado to avenge them!"

The Yamato's cannon batteries roar once, at a safe distance from the Rhinehawk, then again. And again. He literally fires them off twenty-one times before he resumes talking.

"However, as much as I also respect my dear kouhai Miles-chan and Richard-kun, I know that half of your effective forces were lost to the Green Skulls. We, too, were attacked, but thanks to what happened to the noble Kestrels, we lost a mere ten Harpies of our fifty. As you can plainly see, this gives us an advantage should this regretfully become a battlefield...but it does not have to! Do not let your blood paint the starways like cherry blossoms, join with me, accept me as your Captain and together we will seek vengeance for our fallen. We will show the Green Skulls the blades of our souls, and burn them to ash with the fires of our samurai spirits! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNNNNNZAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!" He roars this last word loud enough to make the comm unit rattle.

His Harpies, incidentally, have always struck you as looking particularly weird.

You take out your most prized possession. It may be old, and it may have been cheap, but this was your father's harmonica and there's not a damned thing wrong with how it sounds. Just that first insouciant, warbling note sends a shiver up your spine as you settle back into the Captain's chair as relaxedly as you can and point from Avi to the main screen dominating the bridge. He nods hurriedly, and sends the request to Yoritomo's ship for video communication.

"NANI!? This beat...I've heard it somewhere before..." He even talks like that when he isn't giving speeches.

He accepts, and you get a good view of the big guy himself, clad in a black kimono patterned with white koi fish and red dots. He's got a pair of nihonto tucked into his belt, and his customary forehead protector with its skull and crossed katanas. His eyes look huge and white as he stares at you. You're warbling a tune that he asked you to play years ago in a bar on California Station when he was celebrating the acquisition of the second Yamato.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MduJjbcLSqE

"R...Roarke? I don't dattebayo, man. I don't dattebayo at all." He whispers, as you continue to play. You roll through the song like a professional, hitting every note perfectly and with soul, the way your dad taught you how to play. There's not much for a kid too young to work to do in the slums of Io. You didn't see your first simgame until shortly before your parents died...but you had music throughout your childhood.

Finally, the music stops, and you put the harmonica down. Yoritomo is staring in stunned silence as you fold your arms and ask as casually as possible, "Why are you bothering me, Captain Oda?"

"Roarke...Dude...but I heard you were dead, man, I heard they killed you. You...you're really alive, right? This isn't some kind of joke?"

"You want me to play it again? Can't you see I'm working."

"Well, fuck. I always knew you must be part Japanese. That your spirit couldn't rest until we settled things. Sasuga, Starwind-sama. Sasuga." His brawny chest puffs out, he puts his hands on his knees, and he bows formally, "But I gotta ask you to hand over that ship. Paint and resin ain't cheap, and neither is keeping my nakama's Harpies daijobu. It's got a passenger with lots of cash, and I've got a yen for her yen. Just hand it over, you've had enough good luck to last a lifetime."

"No. Not only no, but fuck no." You point at him, fingergun-style, "You said it yourself, the Green Skulls are the flotsam of the Belt. You and Captain Ozark didn't always see eye to eye, but at least there was respect." An impulse prompts you to add, "Between warriors."

He perks up. You keep talking, "If we fight, they win, whoever survives will be easy pickings for them and they'll end up with the girl." You lean forward, elbows on your knees, "Are you really okay with Captain Galbadie and the Green Skulls taking some beautiful, demure girl from a good family and doing horrible things to her? What would your ancestors think?"

His mouth forms an o, "An ojou-sama, you say?" He rubs his chin, pondering, "Is she kawaii?"

"Yes." You reply as firmly as you can without being entirely sure what kawaii is, "She is incredibly kawaii." You spread your arms wide, "Why don't we settle it like rivals? You and me, one on one. Whoever wins keeps the girl and the ship."

"A CONTEST OF BATTOJUTSU!? HAI! IT'S WHAT MUSASHI WOULD HAVE WANTED!" He clenches his fists, his eyes full of fire and determination. "RRRRRRROARKE-SAMA, YOU'VE FINALLY BECOME A TRUE BUSHI!" He stands up, his tabi socks gripping the tatami mats he's installed most likely into every possible floor of the ship, "I accept your challenge, domo arigatou!" Then a thought strikes him, and he frowns, "But I can't do it, nii-chan. Your Harpy against my glorious Osano-Wo wouldn't be an honorable battle."

We can technically chalk it up as a profit regardless of the result, because we've already drained all of her presumably-considerable bank account, and there's no way he'll be able to get that off of us.

"I've got a new mech." You reassure him, "It's got true warrior spirit and cuts through Tulwars like your sword cuts through cheap plastic bottles."

"UWA~! That's more like it, nii-chan! I'll face you with everything that I've got!"

He cuts comms, and you head for the bay with a grin on your face. Finally, you get the chance to dent up his monstrosity a little.

Karen watches you launch again. This has been a truly triumphant day for her.

The Osano-Wo is already floating in space when you arrive, the sakura pink of its thrusters lighting the void of space. Morgans, and Morgan IIs, are a Bucephalus product, a resoundingly reliable and user-friendly Heavy Striker known for their ability to fly in gravity environments. Bahamut Corporation has tried as aggressively as they can to undercut them with their own Heavy Striker, the Warmouth, but the Morgan series has a strong fanbase and is known for being easy to mod. Bucephalus even released a series of commercials making fun of the fact that the Warmouth copies the flattish head and large protruding pauldrons of the Morgan, with the tagline of 'if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.'

No, rather, it's a lot different. Yoritomo has attached superheavy assault armor specifically designed to resemble a samurai's armor, complete with flat, ridged plates on the shoulders. He's holding a massive heavy autocannon across one shoulder, the big gun inlaid with faux-wood shaped to resemble one of those antique Japanese guns with the virtually straight stock. The left forearm has an small attached shield in the shape of a tessen, one of those strategists' fans. You even see a pair of swords mounted to hardpoints at its hips. With all of its additional armor, it actually weighs about as much as the Knuckle Kaiser, and stands about as tall when you count its proud crest. It's bright purple and red, with a rising sun embossed on its breastplate and two eyes shaped like lightning bolts peering from behind its blank mempo and below a forehead protector shaped exactly like Yoritomo's own.

It has 5 Kills in the head, 10 in the torso, and 6 on each limb. All locations have 7 SP armor. It moves at around 400 meters per turn.

When you reach a distance of 200 meters, Yoritomo whips out the autocannon, "Alright, Roarke-kun, I hope you're ready...BECAUSE I'M GIVING IT MY ALL!"

General consensus seems to be to open with a dropkick.

By the way, I'm going to improve the Grapple Drag maneuver since it requires you to already have an enemy grappled with the harpoon. From now on, every point you beat their roll by drags them 100 meters towards you. Admittedly, it's still better against kiting assholes than the Osano-Wo, which is cheekily standing in place filling the sky with bullets.

Do you all need the maneuvers reposted?
>>
>>46704549
>Osano-Wo, which is cheekily standing in place filling the sky with bullets.
Wait, then what the fuck are those swords for? Visual appeal?
>>
STRIKES:
Punch: Basic attack, +0 WA, deals 6 Kills with your Armored Thruster Fist. Does AN ADDITIONAL attack per Action, unlike the others.
Sensor Jab: -5 WA, deals an additional 2 Kills plus your regular damage to the enemy's sensors. This -5 comes from it being a called shot, the +2K is a special bonus because a hand weapon is better suited for this than a melee or ranged weapon.

KNOCKDOWN:
Throw: -1 WA for every 10 tons the enemy mech is heavier than yours, hurls opponent anywhere within 50 meters of you. It does no damage, but the victim loses 1 Action.
Slam: -2 WA for every 10 tons. Identical to Throw, except it does the same damage as a punch.
Trip/Sweep: +1 WA, knocks defender down, does no damage.
>>
GRAPPLE:
Grab: -1 WA. Take one object from opponent. This can be used to grab humans for a -5 modifier instead of the -1, mostly to avoid sqaushing them.
Pin: +0 WA. Restrains one of the enemy's limbs with one of your own. Neither can use any systems in the limbs involved so long as the pin endures.
Bearhug: -1WA. Pins both of an opponent's arms to his sides, using both of yours. The same rules apply from Pin.
Dismember: -2WA. Rip off any servo from the main torso, except for Pods. Dismembering IGNORES ARMOR COMPLETELY and deals 1K against a servo of the same weight category as your arms (Medium Weight) plus 1K for every category below that. For instance, Dismembering a Harpy's Lightweight head would do 5K.

FULL BODY ATTACKS:
Stomp: -5 WA. Used to squash people, cars, and gun emplacements. If successful, the unlucky target is no more. Against an enemy mech, this attack is just a regular kick.
Tackle: +1 WA. Knocks opponent up to 50 meters away and causes them to lose an Action if the attack is successful, but does no damage. Arms are required to tackle.
Ram: +0 WA. Attacks Torso only. You slam into your opponent's torso, dealing 5K of damage (based on your mass) to both you and them, +1K for every 100 meters you traveled that action. Can be done for FREE at the end of any Action spent on movement. The heaviest unit occupies the space of the defender afterwards, with the other unit knocked 50 meters back.
Drop: -2 WA. Attacks Torso only. A running leap that ends with both feet slamming into the opponent's chest. Identical to Ram, except for the -2 accuracy and the fact that you do NOT take damage from performing a Drop attack. Can also be done for FREE at the end of a movement Action.
>>
>>46704549

Also, you know what to roll! Do it with spirit!

Dismembering will do 2K damage if successful. Two punches will lower the armor of whatever area you aim for by 2, but deal no damage.

Yes, his armor is heavier than yours.

Nah, he has to blast off our face to see that. If the visor is open every battle, what's the point of having it? Seeing our demon face should be a point of honor (and pants-shitting terror, of course).
>>
>>46704655
Grapple. Keep his gun off and don't let him use his swords.
>>
>>46704655
I'd vote grapple so he can't kite us like we're Meiling in IaMP.
>>
>>46704666

I should have said Dismember.

By the way, remember to specify what you're hitting.
>>
Y'know what I just remembered? We still need to investigate Miles and Richard's secret sex affairs.

>>46704655
Grapple. I think Dismembering will get rid of the arm faster than punching.
>>
>>46704702
The gun arm, that is.
>>
>>46704702
He has shitloads of armor everywhere. We'll need to punch the armor off before Dismembering can get through.
>>
>>46704687
Dismember an arm, whichever one had been using the gun. Unless that gun is remote activated, in which case right arm I guess.

>>46704716
>Dismembering IGNORES ARMOR COMPLETELY
>>
>>46704716
Wait, no, ignore me, I am retarded.
>>
>>46704655
Punch one of the arms. Don't dismember. Dismember does 1K damage. He is the same weight as us. We need 6 actions to get rid of it. We just need 3 actions of punching to destroy it with punching.
>>
Could we target a strike to his joints to disable one of his arms rather than ripping it off?
>>
Actually, is it possible to disarm him of the autocannon?
>>
>>46704746
>Dismember does 1K damage. He is the same weight as us

Actually:
>>46704586
>Dismembering will do 2K damage if successful. Two punches will lower the armor of whatever area you aim for by 2, but deal no damage.
>>
Rolled 8 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

>>46704746

He's technically one weight class down. His servos are Heavy Striker, but between his armor and weapons he's 50+ tons.

Sounds like Dismember on the Right Arm. Roll for it!

Also, I was apparently wrong. He can't parry since he's two-handing the tanegashima cannon.
>>
Rolled 5 + 11 (1d10 + 11)

>>46704787
Holy shit, what is with his rolls?
>>
Rolled 9 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>46704787
Alright lets see if I can get out of this funk
>>
Rolled 8 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>46704787
Damn he's pretty dodgy too.
>>
Rolled 1 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

You flatten out your machine's body as you streak towards him like a missile. Some of those bullets come so close, they nearly scrape your paint, whistling between your shoulder spikes. Still, you slam into his chest, and nearly grab his right arm before he twists his body away.

He darts back a few meters, and...lets the cannon go. It drifts behind him, secured by a stout, sturdy cable. With a flourish, he draws his swords...both of them...and attacks twice with one furious volley (one action to draw his swords, one to attack with them, they're Linked, so he only rolls once to see if both hit or both miss).
>>
Rolled 1 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>46704844
This is why I don't hate you. We can only indulge ourselves when face to face against another warrior.
>>
>>46704844

And he misses, you're in melee range with both actions available. He has 6 Torso armor, 7 everywhere else, and no damage taken. What will you do?
>>
>>46704916
Dismember one of his arms twice.

Alternatively, grab that cable, haul in his cannon, and blast him in the face with it.
>>
>>46704916
Dismember head twice.

If we punch 2(+2) times does that mean we have to roll twice or four times?
>>
Autosage is wrecking us. Might want to start a 6.5 thread.
>>
>>46704955

Four times. So, say that you hit him four times in the head. The first two would do no damage but reduce his armor to 5. The next would reduce his armor to 4 and do 1 damage, the next would shave it down to 3 and do 2 damage. If you Dismember twice, you ignore his armor but do 4K total to whatever servo you Dismember.
>>
>>46704964

I might, but it's also 4 AM. Since everything is written down here, what I could do is run the rest of the session after this turn tomorrow night, although it might start a little later than usual. It's awful to break mid-combat, I know, but for once Roarke has an opponent he can't Shining Finger to death in a single turn.
>>
>>46704916
Actually, I'll change >>46704932 to Pin his left arm, and Dismember his right.

Our hands can punch twice as an inherent property, so we're fine as long as we have one arm free, but if one of his arms is disabled, that should nullify the benefit of the Linked property of his swords, unless I'm misunderstanding.
>>
>>46704916
Changing >>46704955 to this >>46705032 good plan.
>>
So how does our shield work? Do we roll to parry anything that fails our dodge? Also if we use the harpoons on our right hand to pin one of their servos. Does that disable our right arm as well?
>>
>>46705065

Yes, and...hmmm. You know what? No, it doesn't. You paid a lot of points for that harpoon, it shouldn't disable your right arm to use it.

>>46705032

I dig it, make your rolls.
>>
Rolled 4 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>46705088
Well shit, maybe we should make the Pin attack with our harpoon, then?
>>
Rolled 5 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>46705088
Pin left arm using harpoon. That way we can still block with our shield which has twice our regular armour.
>>
Rolled 4 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

>>46705098

I'll allow it.
>>
Rolled 3 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

>>
Rolled 359 (1d1013)

>>
>>46705126
Damn we got him good huh.
>>
Rolled 1 + 13 (1d10 + 13)

>>
Rolled 1 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

Successful pin confirmed! Even if your Dismember fails, he won't be able to attack you with his left-hand sword next turn.
>>
Rolled 10 + 11 (1d10 + 11)

>>46705136
Pin lasts until he takes an Escape action, right?
>>
>>46705126
>>46705134
Thunderbird go home you're drunk
>>
Rolled 5 + 12 (1d10 + 12)

He failed to dodge, but he can still try to block you with his left hand sword.

By the way, after this turn would people rather continue tomorrow after a dramatic pause post, or have me start a new thread?
>>
>>46705148
Tomorrow. We only have like 3-4 Anons left.
>>
>>46705141

Yes. That's one of the factors that made me realize that brawling combat is actually really strong in its own right.
>>
>>46705148
I may not be here tomorrow, but you'd probably get more players if you continued then.
>>
>>46705172
Theoretically it's one action for one action (assuming the actions lost to actually succeeding the pin and the actions lost to escaping are equal), so it'll end up as an even trade unless we're built specifically to prevent enemies from escaping.
>>
>>46705187
Do they not have to beat our pin roll first?
>>
"You're sugoi, nii-chan!" Yoritomo bellows, "BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH! WITNESS MY FOUR WINDS HURRICANE DRAGON SLASH!"

His blades blur through the air in a double downward blow, and once again, you barely dodge it. Knuckle Kaiser's powerful frame lunges forward, trailed by jets of thruster fire, as you thrust out your right arm. A shockingly thin strand of an oddly liquid-looking rope shoots out of the boxy protrusion beneath your mech's right forearm, tipped with a sharp-looking point that separates into five small, needle-shaped drones. They whirl around the Osano-Wo in the blink of an eye, pinning the samurai mech's left arm against his side.

You flick on the comms, "You're not bad, Yoritomo, but I'm not in a Harpy anymore, you can't just overpower me with the strength of your machine...because mine is STRONGER!"

You jam the edge of your left-hand shield beneath the base of his helmet, and grab the right arm by the wrist with your massive right claw, and PULL. You can see cracks spreading through the servos of his right arm, but he doesn't seem bothered, laughing uproariously, "Good, very good! It's only when a man is pushed to his limit that he can go beyond it! You've drawn first blood, but only the last blow counts! Show me the fires of your soul, STARWIND-SAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!"

[To Be Continued]
>>
>>46705218
If I'm not wrong, both of us roll another contested 1d10+Mecha Reflexes+Mecha Fighting every time he tries to escape as an action. If he succeeds, he breaks free. Otherwise, he remains pinned.
>>
>>46705187

Except that he loses out more than you by having an arm restrained as it halves the number of attacks he can make. It's gone from two sword strikes per action versus two punches per action to one sword strike per action versus two punches per action. You also pinned the arm with the shield, so he can't block ranged attacks (if you had any besides the grapple) and his right-hand sword will be taking damage on a successful parry because that's all he has to block with.
>>
>>46705240

And keep in mind that this is a guns and melee focused mech versus a mech designed purely for brawling.
>>
>>46705267
This makes sense. I'd forgotten to consider how his options would be limited while attempting to escape, whereas we have access to our full range while attempting to get the pin.
>>
Out of curiosity, if anyone's still here, did any of the other threads hit autosage or is this the first one? You did do an awful lot of stuff tonight.
>>
It helps that Roarke has ungodly luck at avoiding hits.
>>
>>46705403
I'm popping in and out but then again I work night shifts so I'm use to staying up till the crack of dawn.
