>You are one of three characters: Samson, a spoiled bard, Dyrus, an axe-wielding rebel's son, or Rene, an orphan adopted by a high-ranking Director of an ominous empire, now a prepromoted archer-lancer. POV will rotate between them on a thread-by-thread basis, with an off-chance that someone else might occasionally take a chapter.

>These protagonists' motivations and goals will very likely come into conflict with one another's.

>Character Death is always a possibility and sometimes an inevitability (this is Fire Emblem after all), but your actions can very easily influence who lives and who dies.

Rene and her companions are set to spend the next few days doing what they were doing when we last saw them, throwing their combined might at whatever Vautou might need some skirmishing. Omar certainly gets his work cut out for him keeping Saye alive, and Alfred and Veiz often find themselves right by that healer's side as Rene, Marduk, and Cicero team up. In between missions, Veiz takes to interestedly studying the Tower of Longevity's libraries on dark magic, though she has no intent of breaking it out in battle until she's "more than ready," whatever that means.

None of them are going to show up in the next two threads anyway, so what's it matter?

Dyrus, as mentioned before, is sailing along his merry way to the island fortress of the elusive pirate captain Marlo, being warned by both grandfather Darren and newcomer Doran that he should be prepared for one hell of a welcoming party. He's a bit busy focusing on practicing singing, though.

Samson, meanwhile, slogs alongside his companions, both from Holmstead and lent to him by Neir, approaching the Noban-Holmstead border with increasing rapidity. He and his companions cannot go a moment without an earful from his mother, Marion, on fighting off the forces of the Gerxel, even if they're simply supposed to be undercover as simple travelers returning home now that the battle has ended (an idea of Fabrice's).

You are now Dyrus, with the recaptured-from-pirates Muirgel only a short distance from DePlume Isle, which Doran claims to be the hideout of the Marlo Pirates' leader.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6sAMZFmDShs

"Sir Dyrus... The young champion of the people..." You tap your chin as you sit in your cabin, trying to hum a theme and compose lyrics that make yourself sound as cool as possible. Your lack of satisfaction with any of them makes you REALLY wish you'd saved that bard now. Maybe he'd owe you a favor and handle the hard part for you!

Anyway, you put the pen away from sometime to rest your mind and train your body up on the deck of the ship, taking a few practice swings after making sure that won't lead to anyone being cleaved into pieces.

You wonder what this Captain Marlo could be like! Captain Sasha was powerful enough, even with all her silly showboating, to hold her own against your grandfather, and she's not even the one the gang's named after!

"Pardon my interruption," a voice says from behind you. You turn around, recognizing the voice as belonging to...

Byron, it was Byron who spoke! By his side, his constant companion and co-cavalier, Biff.

"We simply wished a moment of your time to discuss the near-future," Biff explains.

"Uh, sure," you say. "I can train anytime, really."

"Alright, then... In short, it has come to our attention that you've taken up quite the unofficial position of leadership among your crew," Biff says. "And thus, your state reflects upon that of the party-nay, the entire resistance-at times!"

"Um... Thanks?" You say, uncertain what he's getting at. Are you being reprimanded?

"What Biff is trying to say," Byron helpfully begins, "is that, whether you realize it or not, you are a keystone of this group's morale, Dyrus. Were anything to happen to you, I doubt that we could finish our mission."

"I'm sure you're just exaggerating," you say, waving your hands a bit. "But, uh... I wasn't planning on dying anyway, so no worries there!"

"Excellent, excellent!" Biff says with a grin. "You'll lead us to great things in upcoming struggles, I'm certain of it."

"Er, my grandfather's kind of our real leader," you say, rubbing the back of your head. "I'm just... our plucky mascot?"

"Your grandfather trusts you a great deal," Byron quickly says, "hence why he has given you as much responsibility as he already has. That being said... The foe we're about to face is an elusive criminal, as I don't need to explain. Be prepared for any amount of trickery on his end."

"We can handle anything he throws at us!" You boast, holding up your Royal Axe and Hand Axe in your hands. "I'll be more mindful than a million Marlos morphed!"

"If you're certain..." Byron says. "We just wished to assure ourselves you would be on your toes."

"Now, if you'll excuse us, our horses demand one last brushing before we reach this fabled island," Biff says before he and Byron away themselves with a mutual farewell.

A short time later, Doran shouts from above, "oi, DePlume Isle's on the horizon! I can see Cap'n Marlo's ship docked!"

You're as ready as you'll ever be to take this guy on, and when your ship docks on the small, out-of-the-way island, you notice a fortress just a ways off of its beach. More importantly for your immediate future, however, is a welcoming party of some maybe 16 men and women, salty smugglers of the sea, the closest to your landing spot being an impressive man, bronzed and looking to be some seven feet tall, clad in a VERY long coat.

"Hold a moment," the man remarks, his cocky grin turning to a scowl. "I come out to see one of Sasha's songs for once and I'm greeted by some strangers? For the love o' the seas, ye'd better be new recruits!"

You and your grandfather, followed shorty after by Gerard, Belle, and Via, disembark, the rest of your company in various number, staring down the tall guy, noticing now a hammer strapped to his back.

"I came 'ere to hear beautiful music! If I don't get my wish, it'll be your head!"

"Captain Marlo, I presume?" You ask. "I must say, I'm impressed! By the description of you hiding in the shadows, I was expecting someone far more sniveling and cowardly!"

"Grh... Don't mock me!" He shouts out, brandishing his hammer. "I'll smash yer' head in before you get another word out!"

"Threatening me before I even get to take you up on that offer?" You ask, looking towards Via. "Come on, let's not keep the good captain waiting!"

"Me? You're... Dragging me into this?" Via asks, uncharacteristically flustered and red from being put on the spot. "I... I didn't expect to..."

"I've heard you practice!" You exclaim, "no need to be so modest!"

Belle looks onto the scene with slight surprise at your... Brazen insistence on singing again, surely, while Gerard just laughs a bit and your grandfather pinches the bridge of his nose.

"Eheh... By the gods, he's serious, lads," Marlo says. "C'mon, lessee you and your lass here show of 'yer pipes!"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VYxcVkayk8

Your abrupt duet is a touching ditty about the sea, improvised on the spot. It sounds nice (Via has a very pretty voice!), but the lyrics could definitely have used any work whatsoever.

Marlo looks to be clutching his sides in amusement. "Ahaha, this's all a prank, ain't it?! Sasha put ye up to this! Tell 'er to get her ass outta here before we keelhaul 'er for gettin' us worried..."

Via, still standing somewhat close (and red, very red... Gee, you didn't mean to embarrass her!), whispers, "Lord Dyrus, we've bought ourselves a moment... Shall I use it?"

"Knock 'em out, Via!" You whisper back.

Via approaches Captain Marlo, who, by this point, has let his guard down and put his hammer back on his back. "Ah, now what've we here? A lass with as silky a voice as yer's... A name, if ya would!"

Via, standing quite close to him, says softly, "my name is Via." Tilting her head back a bit to look up, raising her hand towards his face, she says, "you're quite big!"

You shift uncomfortably, not really sure what she has in mind, and it's taking every muscle in your assorted allies' bodies to hold back from whatever she's doing. They think we're friendly, after all!

"Eheh... Already understandin' the pecking order, are we? Handin' yourself off to the 'ead honch-"

Marlo's words are cut off by Via revealing a pair of daggers and puncturing his neck, sliding them across and using his shock as an excuse to shove him into the water.

"Big, strong, wielding a hammer like that... A fair fight would never have ended in our favor," Via explains as she waves to the fallen pirate as he sinks into the water, gargling even before falling in. Quickly, she scurries back to your side, the rest of Marlo's crew just looking... Too shocked at what's just happened to actually retaliate. Then she gives a bow and a sincere apology. "Sorry if that made you uncomfortable, Sir Dyrus. He simply needed to die as efficiently as possible!"

"C-Captain!" One of the pirates shouts. "E-everyone fall back!"

And like that, his entire entourage hurries towards that fort, with the stragglingmost one getting shot in the back by Doran.

"Why would I be?" You ask, curiously. "I was just really worried you would get hurt!"

"Oh, I wouldn't do that to you, sir," Via says. "I would not have taken the risk of getting close to him had I not been certain it would be purely beneficial."

"Well... That's good!" You exclaim. "My grandfather has always says he likes when I fight smart and unexpected!"

"Indeed," Darren says, "pragmaticism on the battlefield is a great virtue."

"Will I be getting a raise, then?" Via asks with a giggle.

"Maybe," grandpa responds.

"Two guys gibbed an' we already got 'em on the ropes," Doran remarks. "Goddamn, the Marlo're shittier than I remember 'em bein'."

"Well, let's not underestimate the rest!" You exclaim, seriously. "They're probably planning their counterattack right now!"

Winona, Nia, and the rest of their bunch of wyvern riders, alongside Biff, Byron, and Belle, lead the charge to the fort, taking out a surprisingly small subgroup of fighters as they clear your way to the entrance.

"This is getting increasingly curious..." Byron notes.

"Obviously, they're all inside the fort." Belle says next. "They're cowering, but it's still their turf... We're undoubtedly walking right into a trap."

"My intuition tells me the same thing," Biff agrees, dismounting, "but I do still love a challenge! I see their trap and raise them a simple step-over!"

"Step over... Then some of us should at the roof," Winona says. "Fliers, let's do that! Infantry... I'll leave in the hands of Lord Darren."

"Permission to stand guard out here?" You ask.

"Wai', what?" Doran asks, somewhat surprised. "Since when're you the waitin' around type?!"

"If somebody tried to run away," you explain, "it would be pretty bad. I just wanna stop them before that happens!"

"A wise choice, upon further thought... Alright, then. Dyrus, you and Gerard stand guard out front, intercept any pirates who attempt to flee."

"We won't disappoint, sir!" Gerard promises.

You spend like a half-hour being bored, listening to Gerard go on about nature and fruits, as you await something happening.

"...and there's these fruits in the desert that I hear are REALLY hot... Like, I'm not sure how many Island Peppers you've had, but I'm told that eating one raw blows them outta the park in hotness."

"Mhm," you say with disinterest as you tap your axe against your leg idly.

"...alright, what gives?" Gerard asks with surprising impatience. "I mean, you'll give every girl in our crew the time of day, but I try to talk to you and nothing."

"Look, I don't mean to!" You swear to him.

"That just makes it even worse!" He gripes. "You're a natural at this without even realizing it..."

Well, that's certainly something to have on your mind... Later, though. For now, you shake your head. "Let's focus on what we're out here to do."

"Be bored out of our skulls?"

You nod. "Aha, yeah..."

Moments after you say that, you hear the sound of an unfamiliar woman's scream, followed by a lady and an old-looking man, both in rather drab robes, running to the best of their ability from two pirate archers.

"Th-they're gonna kill us!" The lady shouts, moments before being struck down by both archers.

"N-no!" Gerard says, more than a little upset that that all happened far too quick to save one of the... Well, what you assume is escaped prisoners by their garb and actions.

The old man hurries past you and Gerard, clutching his chest and frowning in the direction of the other prisoner's body.

"Just our damned luck..." One of the archers says.

By the sound of things, these pirates are having a pretty bad day! Their captains are both dead, their hostages are escaping... Oh, dear, you hope driving the pirates back into their fort didn't ruin the escape or something.

You quickly chuck your Hand Axe at the one aiming at you before rushing towards the one that was staring down Gerard with your Royal Axe, cutting through him at the same time the soldier pierces him.

The one you simply tossed your hand axe at survives to fire an arrow, though thankfully his upset aim leads him to only graze your side. "Ow..." You complain, downing a vulnerary as Gerard finishes him off before retrieving and handing you your axe.

That being settled, you now find it safe to check on the old-timer.

"Hey, are... You alright?" You ask the old man.

"I'm not the one who just took an arrow or two," he jokes in a bittersweet tone before looking towards the other victim of the archers. "She was going to finally show off the quiche recipe she boasted about so much once we escaped..."

"I'm... Sorry we couldn't save her," Gerard says. "Are there any other prisoners?"

"All that I know of were cut down in the escape, I'm afraid..." He muses, shaking his head. "Some may have survived being separated from the group, but I highly doubt it."

"Why did they capture you?" You ask.

"Why do pirates capture anyone?" Rimes responds. "We were aboard a vessel for an organization that exports tropical fruits to Holmstead many years ago."

"Ah... Wait, they've been holding you hostage for YEARS?"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xIWC2moJvE

"I'm a quite skilled mage when I'm not left without a tome, and many of the others had trades of their own that they were forced to use... I suppose Captain Marlo wanted to try to sway me to his side, but I never relented."

"And good on you for that... We're part of a resistance fighting the Gerxel, and pirates like the Marlo are our enemies as well, Mr. Rimes!" Gerard boasts.

"That is reassuring... I take it you're the ones who we heard of capturing the Muirgel, then?"

"Uh huh!" You say with a smile. "Gerard, show this guy aboard, would you? I think it's high time I helped the others out!"

"Will do, sir!" Gerard says, starting away and offering Rimes an arm.

"Grandpa, Winona, Via! Where are you guys?!"

Your grandfather's voice calls back, "Dyrus? Everything's alright in here, worry not!"

"Right!" You call back. "Gerard was just escorting a prisoner to the Muirgel, so I thought I'd come in!"

There's a moment of silence after that before Doran's voice rings out. "What?! What's so damn funny?!"

Sounds like something important. Biff and Byron run past you as you head in (maybe taking over guard duty for you and Gerard?), looking more than a little concerned. You follow the trail of dead pirates and sound of corpses to the sight of a laughing myrmidon in an eyepatch and sleeveless red shirt. Close to him, Darren, Via, and Doran, the latter aiming his bow at his head as he sits, tied to the ground. The various winged fighters stand around a couple parallel flights of stairs to the roof.

"What's funny, asshole?!" He asks.

Darren and Via take rides with one of Winona's cronies apiece, and you find yourselves spotting Gerard lying on the ground a decent distance from the Muirgel and the other ship you never learned the name of. Biff and Byron stand atop their mounts, between him and Rimes (Marlo, you suppose is the old man's real name), trying their damnedest to kill the Sage. He keeps swerving out of the way of their strikes, getting closer and closer to his own ship as archers onboard make for annoying covering fire.

"Come now, Gerard... It's not funny to joke like this," she says with that stoic smile that fills Via's features whenever she gets PARTICULARLY upset. "I'm healing you, see?" Tears begin to well up in her eyes, and her expression widens. "See? He moved."

"...I see," Via plainly responds before staring down at Gerard in silence, wiping her eyes before smiling. "Now, I suppose I made a mistake earlier in assuming Captain Marlo was slain." She produces a dagger and turns towards the Sage. "I'll simply be correcting that now."

"Via, you're getting emotional!" Belle shouts (shouts!), drawing her sword. "Stay back and let the fighters fight!"

"N-no, no, he's... Dead because of me," you say, frowning. "I could have easily prevented this... So I'll rectify it!"

"You're not going alone!" Belle shouts again, though it falls on ears that aren't paying any attention.

"Take this, MARLO!" You shout out, getting the sage's attention as you toss a Hand Axe straight for his face...

He dodges with ease and strikes you with his thunder magic next, and now you are in a LOT of pain.

"A-argh! Some... one..." You fall to the ground, Marlo grinning and raising his tome.

"This is all your doing, boy!" He taunts you, striking you with another bolt. "Die here now!"

Biff and Byron rush forward, only for the two of them to be blasted off their horses by the powerful sage.

Belle, having been circling around this entire time in search of an opportunity to strike, takes it now, diving straight into the highly maneuverable pirate with her Silver Sword.

"G-ghr... I am... Not going to..." If the last word of that sentence was "die," Marlo, you absolutely are. Your grandfather rushes in to split his head in two with his axe.

"Via, you take care of the wounded!" Darren shouts out. "The rest of you to his ship!"

"It's alright, Dyrus..." Via reassures you, softly, and you feel a soothing staff overpower your wounds. "You... Should not blame yourself for Gerard..."

>A. But you should!

>C. Less talking, go heal Biff and Byron!

"I... Y-you're right, I guess, but... I won't let it happen again!"

"That's the spirit, Dyrus," Via says, cradling you a bit. "You've had a difficult day. After this, I'm going to need to prepare your favorite-"

"Er, can we save the small talk?" You ask. "Biff and Byron are still alive, I think..."

"Of course," Via says, showing herself away to tend to Red and Green over there.

Fort DePlume and the isle surrounding it are soon cleared of all pirate presence. Gerard is given whatever small burial and service you could give him on such short notice, and on such a tight schedule.

According to Biff and Byron, his last words were, "everyone... Take care."

"You served our family well, Gerard..." Your grandfather says in solemn seriousness. "Know that your death was not in vain, and that the true Captain Marlo was unable to escape what he truly deserved."

"I never appreciated your... Emotional tendencies," Belle says, eyes shut, "but I could admire how earnest and curious you always were. Though I... Never had the chance to admit it, your demeanor was often infectious."

"You lived and died as any soldier must be prepared to," Via says, "but... I think we all would have preferred you live long enough to even consider retirement."

"May the gods grant you peace in the afterlife, my friend..." You say to his grave. "You had such a love for new experiences, and now you're the first one of us to enter the great unknown..." You shake your head, "ah, but you don't need any of that philosophical stuff."

You clear your throat, taking a moment to change the subject. "Thank you for all your work, and I hope I can have your forgiveness for... Getting you killed. I'll try to keep what you said in mind, though, and talk to more people... I swear, it's not at all on purpose that most of my friends are cute girls!"

After a bit more rambling to his grave, the lot of you depart from DePlume isle onboard the Muirgel. So it turns out, Marlo was lying about ALL the civilians having been killed, and in fact enough survived to take Marlo's ship-and Doran's promised cut of the loot to give to his hometown-are shipped straight to Port Orla.

"Our next stop," Doran suggests over the tactical table with you, your grandfather, and Winona, "ought'a be here, the coastal city of Darton. Workin' outta there's a group o' mercenaries called the Lords of Chance, led by a dame by the name o' Fortune. We can 'ire them with some o' the pirate gold we just appropriated, talk the townsfolk into rebelling the ol' fashioned way with our tales of how we GOT the gold."

"Certainly Director Waldrick will notice such a thing," your grandfather says.

"Then we'll just need to be ready to fight his forces!" Winona proclaims. "We knew it was only a matter of time when we took the coastal route."

Things got serious pretty fast... It leads you to realize you need to get even better at songs!

For reference, cutoff point for being able to save Gerard was when you heard the thunder outside.

Thanks for playing, as always. Update twitter/ask.fm are qmgrandflocto, and I'll be around in-thread to chat for awhile.
