The mouthwatering smell of baking bread and muffins wafts through Arizona's small apartment. The oven's warmth is taxing the modest air conditioner. Willie's found her appetite again, and after wolfing down her donuts (so fast you make a note to ask if she's been avoiding the mess to the point of skipping meals,) she ends up falling asleep on the couch, her head resting in Arizona's lap. The slender “battleship” is gently stroking Willie's head, tucking stray strands of chestnut hair behind her ear.

“Baseline 9C?” you query.

“The whole package,” Baker confirms. “That isn't the half of it, either. Since she needed extensive yard work anyway, and the fleet is stretched so thin, the Navy requested we update the CIC and change the layout a bit.”

Your heart is beating faster, driving your relentless circling pacing around Arizona's empty little living room. “What, like the Flight III layout?”

“Better. Since the consoles are a lot more compact now, we were able to free up more floor space in there. And since we were rebuilding the whole bridge anyway, we worked over the forecastle to provide some cabins, a small conference and communications room...”

“What are you saying?”

“It's not a proper flagship,” Baker continues, “Not for a carrier battle group or anything, but she has much better command accommodations now. For a division leader.”

Your heart damn near stops.

“Baker, are-” the room seems to be spinning. “Baker. *Please.*”

“She's going to have her own Captain,” Baker says with amusement, “I'm not gonna jangle keys at you and tell you the tank's full. But you're an Admiral without a flagship right now, and rumor has it Higgins whole crew is *still* officially TDY-

The room is definitely spinning now. Higgins didn't just survive. She's not just coming back.

She's coming back to *you.*

[ ] It's a miracle. A second chance to do right by her, and her crew, and every man who's blood stained her decks at LA. A second chance to follow your XOs example. A chance to finally silence the demons - to finally discharge your duty in full.

[ ] You will finally be able to lead from the front. To stand on the field of battle with your shipgirls. To deliver on every dire promise you've made to the Abyssals. To stand where you ought - between the light and the dark, feet planted on a pitching deck.

[ ] Write-in.

Maritime evacuation slides would do nicely for rapid shipgirl deployment. And would encourage adorable WHEEEE cries

Yes, a ship-girl going full size would displace A LOT of water, pretty much the effect of a large bomb going off near the ship's hull. This would damage the hull.

If anything we'd need a catapult or a trebuchete to launch them far enough away.

I'm guessing it won't be too hard to refit her for shipgirl actions. We might not be able to *rapid* deploy our girls, but if it was that hard to launch girls, I doubt PF would have let it gone unmentioned.

Higgins isn't a shipgirl, Ari is, and CNO gave us very clear orders to keep our girls happy. We may have our old ship back, but that doesn't mean we can neglect the bonds we have formed with our shipgirls.

Yes, because we can then go into battle with her. We might not be able to ride her into battle, but that's because of the health and safety risks associated in riding her into battle. Not to mention the whole weirdness surrounding trying to get a saddle that can fit her...

The rest of Baker's words drift through your mind without connecting as the full weight hits you like a sack of lead bricks.

Flagship.

The howling dark is hungry, and it's told you - in as many words - that it wants to devour your girls whole. And you've told it, right back, that it'll have go to through every human soldier who draws breath if it wants to.

And now - you can keep your promises.

Every time you ordered your precious charges into a storm of shellfire and death from a thousand miles away - every time you stood there, trembling with impotent rage as the jaws of the trap closed, with you bereft of backup and all reserves committed, praying for a miracle - every time you loathed the burden you laid on their shoulders, while you carried none. Every time, this, this is what you wished for. Your shipgirls have produced more than their fair share of miracles.

Next time abyssals close the trap, you'll be able to back your words with action. Next time, the Abyss will find itself staring into *you* - and God help them then, for their own tricks won't.

The next time they come for your girls, the bastards will have to go through *you,* first.
>>
You make your apologies to Baker distantly, barely hearing your own words. You almost feel drunk; sandbagged by too many emotions at once. Almost staggering, you slip your phone into your pocket after obligatory goodbyes and promises of further contact as you approach the sofa. Arizona's staring into space, silent and stiff, her hand resting gentle on Willie's temple.

Always dutiful. Always ready.

“Flagship,” you breathe. “They're making her my flagship.”

She nods, ever so slightly, as if to say yes, she heard.

“From now on,” you breathe. “From now on, I fight *with* you.”

She makes no reply, eyes fixed on the carpet now.

You kneel near her, looking up into her shadowed eyes - the only lit lamps are in the kitchen, and the last setting sunrays are retreating across the ceiling. “I don't... I don't know what you feel-”

- a twitch, at that -

“- but when they-” when they rake filthy claws through my mind - “- touch my thoughts...” your breath quavers in your breast. “That last time... it's... it's personal, now. Especially with Higgins, again... they'll come for everything I care about, directly, because I've-” scared “-challenged them, and they can't take it, they *loathe* it, I think. They're going to come for mine - for *you.*”

Arizona seems to have stopped breathing.

“I-” have no goddamned idea what I'm doing - “-was never meant for this. Not now, not so soon. Men my age don't *get* this rank for a reason, and it's not just office politics, either. But this... this I can do. This is what I've been *trained* to do,” you insist, feeling the heat creep into your voice. “They want to desecrate all I hold dear and *I won't fucking let them, Arizona*.”

She tucks her chin down further, as if checking on Willie - but in the growing gloom you can see a single tear sliding down her pale cheek.

I was tempted to select option 2, but we've already been burned by not doing better with Arizona, so let's hear what she has to say about this so we're on the same page and not making assumptions about what she thinks.

Ah hell, this is tricky. I definitely don't like the first option, because we'd just be defending behaviors that are pretty unhealthy.

We can't say that there won't be losses, because we went into Sunda Strait with the best possible fleet combination and damn near almost lost four shipgirls (chunnibotes and torpedo sisters), on top of the conventional naval asset losses...

And the first option just sounds unfortunate for continued friendly relations between Ari and Settle.

All the options are fairly in character, here. But focusing on the "Okay, now you're no longer making sense to me." might be best.

Cup sizes are inherently relative to build and frame, as opposed to bust circumference, which is exactly that.

A woman's 3 sizes don't inherently tell you how busty she is, because a given number for the bust could be pretty much any cup size depending on the size of the ribcage those boobs sit on. A 36 inch bust could be an A cup for a fairly broad-chested woman, or a DD for a more petite frame.

The cup letter tells you how big the breasts are relative to the chest as a whole, and thus are a fairly consistent metric of bustiness. DD breasts won't have the same mass and volume from woman to woman, but they will always be about the same size relative to the woman's frame.

None of the options are great. But we do know that Arizona cares about us a lot. It's redundant to ask her as in option #3. Plus, I'm pretty sure she doesn't want us keeping our flag on another boat, so Higgins coming back is not exactly what she wants.

We want to be in the fight as much as she does, and we are just as much of a sailor as she is.

Then I stumbled on to '89... 4 or 5 weeks ago and burned through that, Tanks, and PJ at the same time.

You know which ship should be in one of the writeups about the Bongs? HMS Glowworm: when a duel against two German destroyers became the losing side of a curb-stomp battle against the faster, more heavily armed heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper, her captain, Lieutenant Commander Gerard Roope VC RN, attempted to torpedo his opponent, playing what was a small ship's hole card against larger ones in those days. When this failed, he charged his burning ship in to ram. Glowworm was on fire from end to end, her guns knocked out, and her Action Stations klaxon stuck on due to a shorted-out wire connection. The Germans were being attacked by a flaming ghost ship that was screaming like a banshee and determined to ram them. It could only have one ending, but when it was over the German cruiser had had 130ft of armour plate and half its own torpedo tubes ripped off, while Glowworm carried Roope and 108 of his men to Valhalla. Captain Roope was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross - at the recommendation of the German cruiser's captain.

“Don't,” you say quietly. “Come on, don't - don't do that.”

She makes no reply, sitting statue-still in the gathering gloom.

“I know... at the hospital, I... I was hasty. And angry. But I *can* take care of myself, Arizona. I think I proved that much. Standing on a bridge - I proved that too, didn't I?” You hear the frustration in your own voice and let go of it with a sigh. “I can *do* this, Arizona. I can finally do my damn job!”

She says nothing, motionless.

Gripping the sofa's arm, you lever yourself up with a grunt, fighting the tight snarl of your leg wound, where the muscle doesn't want to flex. Frustration swells in your chest till you feel fit to burst - so soon on the heels of the good news, this intransigence from your most trusted subordinate, the one you owe the most after your follies - it's almost too much to bear. Safe in the dark, you grip your head and twist your fingers through your close-cropped hair, trying to squeeze the growing headache back down where it belongs. Arizona's bowed head, bare of its usual hat, is just a phantom in the shadows. You close your eyes and see her again in the doorway; shorts and t-shirt, duster tied around her waist like a hoodie, or an apron; blue eyes all asparkle.

They're girls, Goto said. Girls. But Goto doesn't see the Warship in them, and that's why he never noticed Naka's slow slide towards the abyss. You always sensed it strong in Arizona; the calm, rock-solid determination to serve, to realize her true purpose in the fires of battle, standing square between carnage and Country - the first and last line of defense, the sword and shield combined - the battle line.

But she didn't look like a battleship today.

Just a nervous girl carrying a gun two sizes too big for her delicate frame.

A girl.

You squeeze your head tightly, trying to cram the blasphemous thought back into the churning tentacles of your Id - but it's there to stay, sticky like tar and even now flickering alight, a flame that'll burn underwater if it wants.

You were ordered - give her whatever she wants. Ordered. By God himself.

... but isn't that what you should have been doing from the beginning? Isn't that your job, in the end? Not just to lead - but to lead from the front. To place yourself between them and those who would do them harm - to preserve the precious assets - no, the beloved daughters of the Nation? To support, and protect?

No matter *what* the price?

“... I.” You suck in a rattling breath. “I... I'm just doing my job the best I know how. Because I... I don't know what you want, exactly. And... and I... I know you'll *never* ask. But you shouldn't *have* to.” The pressure in your head is tearing it apart. “I'm not... I'm not supposed to do this. Admirals... don't do *this.*” Never let them see you crack - and never, ever let them see you cry. Fetch my red shirt and my brown pants, as the old joke goes. You can cry on your own damn time - but when you carry the burden of command, you carry the courage and morale of every man and woman under your leadership. You're the guiding star, the fixed point in space that everyone can steer by, the Old Man.

But when you're alone in the dark, you know what you really are - a fucking joke, promoted far above his competence level.

You're not the right man for this job.

But there is nobody else here.

“But I have to,” you gasp. “I'm responsible. I've... I owe you everything I can give-” even if it's a Captain's service, not the Admiral she needs - “-and I can't give it if I don't know, so I beg you, *tell me.*”

There's a gentle creak of sofa springs; a soft rustling of cloth. You squeeze your eyes shut, not wanting to see what you just asked for, some delirious part of your head hoping you'll wake up to a saner world where you didn't just wind up and kick years of training and proper procedure into the gutter. You expect the click of a light switch, but instead you feel a gentle tap on your shoulder. Lowering your arms, you feel the shaft of your cane obstructing your motion.

You accept it, turning to face Arizona. Her face is half-lit, half shadowed by the faint glow of the stove-top light in the kitchen. She lifts her hand and mimes a cane-walking motion, then points at you.

“... okay, that one I don't get.”

She grabs *her* head now, then stabs her finger at the open floor between living room and kitchen before making a shooing motion. *Go.*

You go, hobbling towards the kitchen. Stopping at the threshold, you look back over your shoulder. She beckons you back, so back you go, hobbling up to her. “So what does this-”

-without warning, she kicks the cane out from under your hand just as you're trusting your full weight to it. You're so surprised you don't even have time to yelp as you fall -

- right into her arm as she catches you around the waist. You feel her sag dangerously as she takes your full weight; she's still in Girl mode, with no Ship to steel her frame - but she manages to get her hips into it, slinging you upright with a grunt.

On steady footing again, you stare at her, the gears crunching into motion in your skull as she pokes you meaningfully in the chest.

“... but-” her hand clamps over your mouth, and steel or not, her grip is pretty damned firm. You see her blue eyes flashing as she shakes her head, catching the dim light of the stove light.

Not really. Tsushima certainly was humiliating for the Russians and cemented Japan as a great power, but it's not like Russia winning against a non-European navy was utterly groundbreaking, nor was an Asian power getting its ass handed to them.

The only real change would have probably been focusing on its army more than its navy. Which results in the Chinese meatgrinder, same as the standard history.

What would actually cause butterflies for Japan would probably be better outcomes from the Post-WW1 all you can eat kraut buffet. Japan's ww2 mindset stems directly from the feeling they got shafted post-WW1, not from overconfidence after Russia.

Because nobody should really feel overconfident after defeating Russia.

>Patients tend to love us more than the Docs, which is always nice.

As well they should. Nursing care is where patient recovery makes or breaks. What's more common; a fuck-up during a surgery, or a nasty drug-resistant MERSA infection contracted at the hospital? Nurses are the ones that check charts and actually administer drugs and do the day-to-day. That's where diligence is required, and diligence is hard, especially with the kind of grueling shifts nurses work. My grandmother's life was saved by a competent nursing staff when her own doctor's dipshittery would've killed her.

Fuck yeah, nurses.

I like most of the first option, except the insinuation at the end that we doubt she can handle it. Hence the modification -- it's not that we think she's weak, it's that it simply wouldn't be right to ask her to bear our burden on top of her own.

You're both right, probably. IIRC SoDak didn't have a turreted secondary battery, and even if she did, those are small enough to be trained by hand. Without power, though, you're firing on local control (no automatic setting from the fire director) and laying the guns by hand, both of which are shit ways to do it, especially at night.

So she was blazing away, but her accuracy was predictably shit.

Don't forget she's absolutely massive. In other areas.

I mean, those hips can't even fit though the Panama canal!

Clearly you've not met many actual women then.
>>
>>46660016
Well, as it turns out, Essex is very much not a lewdcarrier, so her having a harem is relatively unlikely.

Eh Legs are Tone's strong suit.

They're uncommon, but not enough to make random people mention it.

Again, in Japan? The average height for women is 5'2", whereas in America it's 5'4"

Someone failed a reading comprehension check.

Nope, the little shits are breeding into the Gene pool. They count as white on statistics even if the closest they come is grandmommy getting a good hard dicking by some marines after the war.
>>
>>46660102
>>46660108
Wasn't implying that, just that Ari's character wasn't much more original than Shoukaku's hypohetical one.

Also in AWiY no one complained about the Keinelock.
>>
>>46660130
Seconded.
>>
>>46660079
Not only you missed your reading comprehension check, here's some more data.

That's because Keine was 1. wonderful, 2. could keep up with and call out Wizard on his shit, and 3. Domestic comfiness with an adorable daughteru. AWiY was ahead of its time.

I kind of hope you're kidding. If this is really the route lock, then please just have her bow out and let the waifu wars finally fucking end. Watching her go yan would be kind of painful.

Inches are in Table 10. I used the metric table because I prefer civilized measuring systems.

Incidentally, military and medical units use SI units, making them the true freedom units.

She really doesnt deserve such a short end of the stick.

Then again still trying for fleet end.
>>
>>46660172
So comparing Shoukaku to her would be a compliment, not so much the Ari to minna one (considering how emotionally damaged the latter is)
>>
>>46660159
I bet they're counting midgets in there, which skews the average dooooooown.

The US race categories are an enigma to me. When I went over there to work I had a 5 minute debate with the persons around to decide wether I was "white" or "hispanic". Being from the Mediterranean, I really could fill any of those.

The definitions are really, really arbitrary.
>>
>>46659961
You don't want possessions, not that early on. Raid the shit out of them until they collapse, then take NO territorial reparations. The points will instead be applied to your base income... which multiplies over time. Colonial income does not. So a quick war early can be lucrative as fuck in the long run.

After reading those notes/write-up for Houshou I'm going to go with Houshou being a dick loving and manipulative slut.

Ari is totally the Saber clone and I totally support this and I am not pushing for it when PM'ing Deme.

Shou's closer to Rin than I thought, now that I think about it.
>>
>>46660296
But they *do* push it.

We invented math, geometry, astronomy, democratic government, natural science, philosophy and engineering. We're as close to Arab as you can get without being Arab, which also means we're as far away from French or German as you can possibly get while still staying European.

Of course we don't shop around for genes. We don't fuckin need any.

>>46660396
GHOST WHY.
THIS IS JUST REVENGE FOR MERLIN LEWDS ISN'T IT?!
>>
>>46660316

They mostly pertain to groups that the Government feels should get special treatment for being a minority. There's even a category for "Pacific Islander." Since my family came from Calamos I just write-in "Mediterranean Islander" every time. Fuck'em.

Neco/Catte, yes.

>>46660571

Nah, I was just talking with her. She's uninvolved, I don't actually think she follows KCQ
>>
>>46660462
But then you have Kaga + an entire goddamn Marine Corps squadron going after your arse (re: Akagi), or Hiryu and the rest of the Midway group descending on you (along with the aforementioned Marine Corps squadron to boot, because Akagi) re: Soryu.

With Shoukaku, she's isolated, ya see? Plus she has a history of being quite unlucky as well.
>>
>>46660584
Of course she's uninvolved, she's saving herself for her nii-san~
>>
