Emma wasn’t kidding. After your match, the hammered Elite Four member is trying to get you into a bar downtown. You and your friends tried to talk her out of it, but it was on the way back to your hotel and she insisted.

“Come oonnnn!” Emma argues with the bouncer at the bar. “Let me and my friendsh in. Don’t you know we are? Who I am?”

The bouncer looks over her to you and your friends, then shrugs. “No idea.”

Good. Now maybe now she’ll give up and-

“Perfect!” Come on!” She pushes him out of the way and users your friends in. You follow in a panic.

It doesn’t work, of course. You’re all caught and kicked out after a few minutes of running around. But you can’t say it’s not fun.

“Whoo. Alright. You guys were right. It won’t work.” She removes her jacket. “Lestsh go back to the hotel.”

Yeah. Probably a good idea to get her out of public.

You head back to the hotel. She flops onto your couch and produces a bottle from her flask. She takes her Froslass out and pours her some too. “Don’t do thish at home. Froslass can proshesh alcohol, but mosht Pokemon can’t.”

“Noted,” Vance says, sarcastically unimpressed with the lush. “Are you going to be okay?”

“Judgemental type, huh?” She leans back. “When you get to be my age, and you get ajsh many certifi,” she burps. “Shertifications and PhDs and shave as my lives as me, then maybe you can judge what I do on my time off.”

Vance blinks. “Fair enough.”

You sit back and chat for awhile. You don’t want to stay up too late. You have training to do in the morning. In three days, you’ll be battling Robert. He’s the fire type master, he’s got incredible power, and the officials told you on the way out that it’ll be a double battle.

“So, how’d you manage mega evolution?”

She burps. “I tried for years. Years. Genetic study, going over any footage I could find, interviews. Even following some myths. We trained and trained, and you know what worked?” She lifts her bottle. “Loosening up and being fully honest with my Pokemon.”

“Using booze?” Clair lifts the bottle then burps too. She waves away the smell, but Vance gets a whiff of it. She looks cute when she’s in trouble.

“Yeah,” Emma says. “Being honest isn’t easy. You can’t just drop your guard, feel waht your Pokemon feels, and put yourself out there willy nilly.” She looks up at you. “Well, I guess you can.”

Huh. Well, that gives you some insight at least.

You chill for awhile longer. She informs you that Vlad, as a poison type, can drink booze and that Zubats and their family actually enjoy fermented fruits in the wild whenever they can. Raistlin can process a little, Dan would get a little sick and no buzz, Oberon and Destiny could have a little but not too much, and everyone else shouldn’t have any. Levi especially would apparently go into a rage.

You have a pleasant talk and she crashes on your couch. Robin’s battle with her is tomorrow evening.

The next morning, you wake up fresh. Your battle took a lot of energy out of you, and Emma too, but a good night’s sleep does wonders.


Robin’s match is later, but right now it’s training time. What kind of approach are you going to take?

You do some quick, cursory studying of Robert. You decide not to bother Robin over it. She’s getting the last bit of training for her match with Emma, and getting Vance to help. He’s demonstrating his martial arts moves. Some snake like movement. You don’t have time to really pay attention, though.

Robert’s battles don’t last long. There are a few things you notice about how he battles. One is that in his double battles, he very typically focuses on attacking a single Pokemon at a time.

He focuses down the strongest one as quick as he can. He also has very powerful fire moves, which is no surprise. But what’s weird is that they seem to burn much more often.

Lastly, with all the damage and power that his Pokemon put out, it seems like they also take some. It’s like they all have the ability Solar Power, but they don’t.

You piece together his team. Seems like he’s stopped using a lot of his usual gym Pokemon.

Alright. You’re satisfied with the team list. You head to a training area. Jeanine comes with for moral support.

“And we never hang out,” she says. She even has her own Pokemon out to help out with training. “We’ll help with whatever you need,” she says.

Well, with your team set, you take out the first Pokemon you’ll train. Nibbles. His strength is his tenacity. He can take a crazy beating and dish it out pretty well too. He’s not very fast or agile, though.

If it were anyone else, you’d hesitate on this type of training. But Nibbles doesn’t care. You take Jeanine up on her offer and ask her to use her Pokemon to attack him. You don’t want to sound too vain, but Nibbles can take them all. Jeanine is a good friend and treats her Pokemon well, but she doesn’t train them to fight.

And you can understand why she doesn’t like to do her own training. She gave up on the life of a Pokemon trainer when she lost her first Pokemon. You couldn’t imagine starting your journey and then suddenly losing Devon.

Creed swoops in and lands a slash on Nibbles. Nibbles barely registers in. Then her Wartortle, Triton, gets him in the back with a water gun.

“You can’t dodge them all. Use Protect”

It takes him awhile, but he finally gets it. After some time, he uses Protect to shield himself from all attacks.

“That was fun!” Jeanine bounces. Her ponytail sways. “What’s next?”

You check the time. You can get some more training in if you don’t mess around. You send out Destiny.

It’s a tough choice, but you decide to go with Disable. Jeanine has one of her Pokemon use a move on a target, and Destiny tries to disable it.

Destiny only has one hiccup. Every time someone uses a move, she instinctively tries to dodge it even though it’s not directed at her. She learns to work with that instinct instead of letting it dictate her actions automatically, and she uses Disable with ease after a short while.

“Awesome,” Jeanine gives you a high five, and then gives Destiny a slap on the tail. Destiny bubbles happily.

“Thanks for helping.”

She smiles and puts you in one of the headlocks she usually reserves for Clair “Hey! No problem. This is your time. You and Robin. I know if I were publishing a book, you’d be helping me out.”

You dash to the arena. Robin’s match is starting soon. You catch up to her and the others give her a good luck kiss, and a pat on the butt as she heads to her area. She seems more confident this time.

Jeanine raises her hand to talk, but then calms herself. “Most nights Vance and I don’t get much sleep.” She puts a hand on his leg. He has no idea what to say or do.

“Only some nights?” Violet ignores Clair and smirks condescendingly at Jeanine. I suppose the honeymoon phase can’t last forever. Plainness does get old.”

“Violet!” You've had enough.

Robin and Emma have a very cautious battle. Neither fully commits, each tries to outflank the other. It’s long and to be honest a bit boring at parts, given how much they constantly reposition and feint. After a long series of no decisive actions, Robin makes her move. She retrieves her tiring Sylveon and throws out Gyarados.

Robin makes her to toss it high up into the air just like you did, but instead of using Bounce the same way, she fires down a Fire Blast. It misses and hits the frozen pond that Abomasnow is ingrained beside, making a huge cloud of steam.

Her ingrained Abomasnow is shrouded in the heavy steam, but unharmed. She was expecting Gyarados to land on top of her.

Robin has Gyarados use Dragon Dance under the water.

“No problem, we’ll just-”

Emma’s eyes go wide. Emma can’t move Abomasnow because of Ingrain, and can’t retrieve it through the steam. She’s helpless as Robin’s Gyarados becomes a powerhouse.

She uses various rock moves, but they lose their power when smashing through the ice, if they even make it through at all.

Emma pushes to mega-evolve Abomasnow. With the extra strength, it rips out the frozen ground and finally gets loose. But it’s too late. Gyarados bursts from the icey water and makes short work of Abomasnow.

And with that, she sweeps the rest of Emma’s Pokemon. It’s nothing but relentless and aggressive assaults to stop Emma from forming a counter strategy.

“See you around, children.” She gets up and leaves. You sense a faint anger simmering under her voice. Violet was the only one to win a flawless victory against an Elite Four member in living memory.

You and your friends head down to congratulate Robin. She’s giddy as can be. Emma looks exhausted, but satisfied. “I’ll need to take a rain check on more rounds,” she tells Robin. “Too much brain drain for me. I didn't realize you were getting me into position until it was too late. Well done.”

Emma stops before leaving. “You know, Robert would battle against both of you at the same time, if you wanted. I think you both can cover each other’s weaknesses.”

You and Robin exchange a look. You can tell from that look that she’d be okay with that if you are.

Robin nods in understanding. She knows not to take that personally. Your last doubles battle wasn't great. Your first one was fantastic, though. But it’s not just her nerves you’re worried about.

“How would it work?” You ask Emma.

“It doesn’t matter.” You turn around and see Robert. His arms are folded over his powerful chest. Vance is built like a bodybuilder, but Robert is like a strongman. “Double battles are my specialty, but I’ll fight you in a single battle if you’d prefer. Or both at the same time. We can do six total Pokemon per side, or twelve. I’ll only need two.”

“Dad...”

“Robin, it’s time to end this farce of yours. The world doesn't let you taste victory just because you’re able to win a few battles.” He looks off into the distance. “Eventually, we all taste bitter loss.”

“She did great against Emma.” Everyone backs you up. Even Emma voices her agreement.

“Yes. She did.” He smiles proudly, but only for a second. “Emma is a strong trainer, yes, but you’ve crossed into a new tier. Pick whatever approach you think you can use to win, and I will crush it. Mega-evolution is a gimmick. Tricks and schemes and luck run out.” His voice booms. “Prove you’re able to defend your dreams or kill them in their cribs before they’re strong enough to destroy you.”

“What was that?” She loosens the grip.

Jeanine releases her with a smug look. “Darn straight I’m...oh.”

Now it’s Clair’s turn to look smug. Jeanine and Robin still clearly disagree with that viewpoint, but they can’t seem to vocalize a strong defense at the moment.

You’re not the philosophical type. Your mind is on training. Whatever the circumstances of your next match, what you’re really feeling right now is the thrill of a strong battle under all of it.

“We’re doing something a little different, today,”

Levi looks down at you and cocks her head to the side.

Before you begin, Robin runs up and gives you an idea. You both talk about the details, and you agree. She tosses out her Gyarados.

You both stand ready to recall them, but they’re well trained. They don’t fight this time.

“Here’s the plan.” You point to a painted circle on the training floor. “You two are going to fight for that spot. But no using moves.”

“That’s if you’re up for it,” Robin includes. “We expect to see a friendly game. No hurting each other, okay?”

Levi snorts. Obviously she can act disciplined. It’s the other Gyarados that you two should be worried about.

Robins’ Gyarados conveys pretty much the same thing.

“Good. Then do your best.”

Both Pokemon wrestle for the spot. Levi tosses Robins’ Gyarados aside, but it comes back fast and gets under her, throwing her out. She swings around and wraps around it. It wraps around her.

And it goes back and for for a long time. Both push, shove, and pull the other, and sometimes fangs are bared, but nobody does anything they shouldn’t.

At the end, there’s no clear winner. They’re both exhausted. But they both seem to have gotten a lot better and wrestling and tossing and grappling each other. There’s a sense of mutual respect now too, but still undercut by having to appear unhappy that the other exists.

You take them back. Oberon is next.

You’re a bit torn, so you spread your focus somewhat. You casually grab Robin’s ass with one hand while stroking your chin with the other.

Training goes late into the night, but you get both mostly done. Facade, and working on expanding his ability to land critical hits. You’re still not 100% confident, but you’d be willing to make a decently large bet based on his performance.

You go back to the hotel, eat, pound the hell out Robin and Clair like they owe you money, shower, sleep, apologize to Vance and Jeanine for the noise last night, eat, and head back out to train.

“Vlad, come on out!”

He does a loop and zooms through the room at absurd speeds. You guess you being fired up is rubbing off on him.

Vlad has a niche on your team. He’s your wallbreaker. He has Infiltrator, great speed, and lots of status moves that can shut down larger and stronger Pokemon. He has enough kick to bring the pain if needed, but it's not where his expertise lies.

You and Vlad work on Roost. He somehow catches on to the concept of landing and taking a break very quickly.

Robin’s busy doing some sort of switching training with Ditto and Zoroark. Everytime she throws one out, she tries to get it to transform into something different. Over and over, she retrieves and sends them both out. Each time, they either disguise or transform into something else that’s in the room.

And at the end, you have three identical Robin’s standing there.

“I’ve had dreams like this,” Clair mutters.

Jeanine leans on your shoulder “If you guys have spares, can I have one?” You all look at Jeanine. “What? I don’t mean it in a creepy way. It’s just...like, Robin’s super adorable and you could dress her up in all sorts of outfits and... and I’ll stop talking now.”

Devon is next. You release him and play for a bit. Sometimes you just chase each other around and run. He likes that the most, next to just listening to your flute.
