By morning, Sophia has awoken, and is able to eat and drink. However, her gaze is distant, and she refuses to communicate beyond a simple nod or smile.

The City of Neige is in the process of reform, with pockets of resistance still sprouting, only to be quashed by your Hellraisers. Marigold takes great pride in removing the head of every rebel leader, to the point that she becomes known among the Hielonites as the Lady of Pain.

Duncan and Kyle are hard at work gathering information on the city, and the surrounding lands. They know of several dozen forces still holding out against the new regime, but none of them are organized enough to incorporate the others, and nearly all of them are plagued by rivalry and self interest. Duncan believes it will take little more than a unit of minions and a pair of Hellraisers to obliterate each one.

Legion has absorbed a plethora of souls, which has made him even more formidable. This new strength makes him feared among friend and foe, but his loyalty is ever unwavering.

Shen grows restless. His feet itch, and though he takes orders well enough, it's hard to ignore his propensity for bending the rules or causing trouble in order to have a little fun for himself.

Caitlyn and Gilbert are eager to return to work, but are making due studying the rituals and magic of the Hielonite mages, and Caitlyn is especially fond of helping to introduce the mages you have recruited from the colleges into the military.

As you wake this morning, throat parched and stomach slightly ill from the stress, you think on what to do first on this grey, dull day.

You rise and don your armor, noticing that the chill of the north makes it less than pleasant to wrap yourself in steel. After dressing, you exit your makeshift chambers at the top of the library's astronomy tower, and spot a minion waiting for you just outside the door. He holds a tray with hot coffee, and a slice of toast in one hand, and in the other he holds a notepad, covered in what looks to be Duncan's handwriting at a glance. You take the toast and coffee and begin absentmindedly eating as you walk.

"My dark lord, some news. Another group of radicals was put down last night by Lady Marigold. That makes four this week. There were seven hostile casualties, but no citizens were harmed. Also, Shen has been brawling in the streets again. He hasn't seriously injured anyone, but his escorts are having a harder and harder time convincing him to stop at bruises and bloody noses. Thirdly, a messenger was spotted riding north from our homeland. We expect to receive him before noon. And of course, the search for Lady Caela is ongoing, but we have found no leads. Even Duncan is beginning to show signs of fatigue from the stress."

The minion bows, and scurries off to perform his other duties, whatever they might be. You arrive at Sophia's door shortly, and enter without knocking, because knocking is for chumps and maids and you are neither.

Inside, the room is quiet, holding only a bed, and a chair for a guest to sit in during visits. The window shades are drawn allowing white sunlight to enter and illuminate the room, though dimly thanks to the clouds overhead. Sophia lays beneath a pile of furs, eyes shut and hair pouring freely over her down pillow. At each corner of the room, a Hellraiser stands guard, unflinching, even in your presence. They each carry a spear, and have been ordered to kill any unknown intruder on sight, though as of yet none have attempted anything.

You approach Sophia's bed, and peer down at her. She appears to be asleep, but her breathing is off.

You take the chair beside the bed and try to get comfortable despite the understuffed cushion, the rickety frame, and the slight smell of old people.

You lean back and look for something to occupy your mind. You try counting dust motes, and watching an ant on the ground try to roll a breadcrumb to it's nest. Thanks to the coffee, you can't even nap. This silence is not helped be the rather professional and well disciplined nature of the Hellraisers, who don't so much as gossip on duty. After two hours, you finally hear Sophia stirring.

"I was hoping you'd get bored, but it seems you're here to stay. Is running such a vast land really so dull that you'd rather sit with a sick woman and contemplate your navel?"

"I'm sorry to have caused you all this trouble. I'll be back to work as soon as I can be, so you don't have to worry. There's nothing more I want than to be out of this bed and back in my armor."

You let Sophia know that her work isn't the thing that worries you. You hear her shift in the bed, and look over to see that she has turned her head away and covered it with some of the blankets.

"I'm surprised to hear that. I really am. You always strike me as so professional, and dedicated to your work." You wait for her to pop her head back out, at which point she seems to move on from the subject.

"Before you ask, I want to tell you the truth. Caela did attack me. I can't say why, but it was reason enough for her to throw away decades of sisterhood and friendship. I don't blame her, in a sense, but I'll tell you now that we have nothing between us now. I won't like it, in fact it will tear me up inside, but if it comes to it, I can fight her next time. Just this once, I had to accept her anger. It was the least I could do for her."

"That must be strange. Most people I know had to face their mortality before they were old enough to vote for their senators. That's not even counting the ones who had to come to terms in the five minutes between being gutted by an enemy and bleeding out on the ground. I suppose it would be nice to keep my looks a while though. I dread being an old, shriveled prune struggling to raise her shield above her waistline."

You sense true doom in Sophia's tone. You suppose to someone who hasn't even seen an Aeon Worm eat a burning star, or felt the hot wind of the ninth pit caress their face as they sail the sea of traitors, a life like yours must seem semi-eternal. You haven't had to worry about ageing in so long, you don't even remember how old you really are. You remember fearing death though. The sleepless nights. The fear induced vomit. The sense of longing. The certainty of finality after every deep cut and hard blow.

QM, this makes me wonder...
Sophia doesn't know what we look like... but we fucked her, right?
Did we have sex wtih our helmet on? Did we play beach volleyball with our helmet on? That's not a joke, that's actually something that happened?

Yes, we had sex with our helmet on.
We have different helmets for different occasions.
>>
>>46591308
Yes to all your questions anon.
>>
>>46591314
You ask Sophia if she's ever actually seen your face, without the helmet on. She responds in the negative, and you stand, asking the Hellraisers to step out. They do so without question, filing out neatly and orderly. When they shut the door, you turn back to Sophia, watching her nervous, excited eyes trace over you.

You tell her the story. Of how when Vanessa was only a toddler, she was hit by a stray knife meant for you, but that you knocked out of your ex-wife's hand. It flew and nicked her cheek, and she took it to mean she was unwanted, hated even. She fled, through the back door and under the fence. You chased her at top speed, but her size afforded her the means to use routes you were unable to. You did your best, but eventually you lost her. You searched high and low, tearing through the town from the playground to the library in hopes of finding her. Eventually, someone point you the shore of the Sea of Torment, a place dangerous even for the pit fiends who dwell there.

You followed her trail, until finally you found her. She was seated on the edge of a brimstone cliff, watching the magma waves ebb and flow far below. Out of instinct and joy, you shouted her name. It startled her, and sent her careening over the edge. She screamed, and you leapt after her.

It was too late to stop her from hitting the fire. All you could do was protect her. You banished your armor, and dove after her. She was rendered unconscious by the fear and altitude drop, but you held on long enough to grab hold of her, cradle her against your chest, and summon your armor back. It was resistant to heat and flames, so it would protect her so long as she was inside it with you. But the last thing to appear, as always it has been was your helmet. You felt the flames sear your scalp and char your every orifice, but the helmet did come, and when it did, you passed out.

cont
>>
>>46591606
You floated together for a long time. All the while, submerged in a flood of boiling stone, you had Vanessa pressed tightly against your bare chest by the armor. She couldn't so much as move. You did your best comfort her. You spoke to her, sang to her, even told her stories about your life. She cried often, usually until she fell asleep. But through it all, you did what you could to make her feel better. When at last you were dredged up, she was nearly starved, and your helm was fused to your skin. Vanessa's mother was so angry, she couldn't even speak to you. It was the final nail in your marriage, and the next day you filed for separation.

That is the origin of many things. Vanessa's devotion, your visage, and your unending hostility with your wife.

When you look back to Sophia, her eyes are filled with a mixture of sadness, and understanding. She says nothing, only waits for you to continue.

>"I can take it off for you. If you like. I've been able to for a long time. I was always just...afraid."

"I should have told you before, but I honestly wasn't sure what to do about it. Caela and I had been arguing for a while. She was convinced you were going to be the death of the people you came to rule over. But I saw the hope you could represent for them. I tried to convince her that the two of us, she and I, could do more good as your advisors than as common soldiers. But she refused. She wanted the warring to end, as if war could ever truly end. It's in human nature to fight. I know that much. And when I told her..." she pauses here, gazing back at your face, and struggling to keep her eyes there. "When I told her...I..."

You ask her to take her time, and she thanks you. After a minute, she seems to gather herself again.

"When I told her I might be...carrying your child, she couldn't handle it. She attacked me. I didn't fight back, and she ran. I tried to find help, but I had lost a lot of blood, and... and well you know the rest."

Sophia turns her face down to the blankets, as if trying to hide her face.

"I think that might just have been the last straw. She probably didn't want to suffer the child of someone she saw as an enemy to live. It makes no difference now. What's done is done."

Despite her words, you can see the regret on Sophia's face. She might pretend to be neutral, but who could truly be unaffected by such an event.

You tell Sophia to put it out of her mind for now, and focus on recovering. She seems to appreciate the sentiment.

At that moment there is a ruckus outside. You tell Sophia to try and sleep, and head toward the door to see what's going on. As you open is and peer into the hall, you see the Hellraisers holding one of the minions against the far wall, telling him to keep quiet for the sake of Sophia and your conversation. Upon seeing you, the minion cries out for help.

The Hellraisers let him go, sending him fumbling to the ground. After recovering and dusting himself off, he belts out his message.

"My dark lord, the fortress was infiltrated during your campaign! A few of us were hurt, but none killed so far as we know. They took some of our gold, maybe four pounds, but more important they found their way into your office and took not just your favorite desk toy, but the sword that once belonged to the Paladin Cruz."

Cruz, you old rival, the man who tried to kill you thrice, and the former tenant of the body that now houses Legion, your loyal thrall. The sword he brought during your last battle was strange, made from steel using techniques of a far and distant land. You yourself did not take the time to master its use, but you knew that if he thought it might serve to kill you, it must be worth keeping. Still, a few fistfuls of gold and a sword are hardly worth disturbing your peace for.

You tell the minion to report in, then rest before heading back. He bows, and scampers off. The Hellraisers look to you, concerned. If even one of them had remained, things might have been different, but to dwell on that now is meaningless.

You decide to send someone back to the fortress to keep things in order while you focus on the uprisings and management of the Hielonite people.

You might send Duncan, who would no doubt track the intruders in due time. But he would not stand a great chance if they're too strong.

Sending Legion would keep the fortress well defended, but he is not one for espionage or tracking.

Shen would keep things safe, but his recent behavior leads you to believe while he might find the intruders, it may cause even more trouble.

Gilbert and Caitlyn are neither good in a fight, nor good at deduction or subtle detection, but it might be humorous to watch them try.

Eventually, after a lot of tedious business and boring meeting, night comes, and with it more trouble. The people of Neige are still volatile, and in need of correction, but tonight things are made worse when Shen, deep in his cups, finally goes off the rails and attacks a bartender for refusing to serve him. According the Hellraiser that finds you at dinner, he is going on something of a rampage, and though his escorts are doing what they can, without orders to bring him down or help from another, he will continue to tear up the town.

Shen seems to take your words in sincerely. His gaze falls to the ground as he steadies himself with one arm, and presses his free hand to his head to assess the damage. You wait for him to respond.

"You sure do love the sound of your own voice," he says, half laughing. Suddenly, he rises, and you realize his hand is burning once again. His fist comes up, aiming for your chin. You step back right as his knuckle is about to land, causing it to graze the bottom of your helm. You take no damage, but your helmet is damaged, and tumbles off of your head.

Shen's face changes from smug satisfaction to utter shock when he spies your true face. He is about to speak, you think, when suddenly a massive arrow pierce his chest. He stumbles back, and ten more shafts lodge into his body, followed by thirty more that send him backward, and pin him to the wall behind him. You spin around, and spy the Hellraisers. They are spread across the rooftops, and at their center, is Marigold. She has discarded her helmet, revealing her covered eye and ginger hair. Realizing your helm is removed, she turns her head away.

"Hellraisers! Divert your gaze! Your dark lord is not decent!" She cries, covering her one good eye. The Hellraisers follow, burying their faces in the crooks of their elbows.

That done, Marigold and the Hellraisers uncover their eyes, and leap down to the ground to meet you. They file into tight formation, putting their bows at rest. Marigold approaches, and leads the others in a bow.

I'd rather not draw this out in public...

Vanessa and Shen were foreseeable. Caela was the only thing that came out of the blue. I thought since we had Sophia on our side Caela would not do anything extreme.

You did well. You may return to your duty.

Punish her on the spot.

We are not weak. We did not need her help. We were having a good time, and then she came in and ruined it. she killed our foe for us when we wanted to do it ourselves.

We didn't lose Vanessa, we just let her go. Even if she has her own career, she'll always be daddy's little girl.

We should use a crystal ball or something to call her, to check up on her and see if she still eats her veggies and gets enough sleep and doesn't let herself be pushed around on the job and maybe ask if she has met a strong and handsome man that will give us strong grandchildren yet.
>>
>>46598489
did you read that part where she poisoned us for the job?
>>
>>46598316
Shen, Vanessa, Caela, Almost Kyle, Ray ;-; RIP.
>>
>>46598516
Ray best bro ;_;7
>>
>>46598234
I hope Caela is redeemable though... Vanessa probably wont work for us again as will Shen but Merigold returned to us too after bitch-slapping her.
>>
>>46598553
I wanted to do another flashback story about when you became besties with Ray, but I figured people wouldn't take kindly to so many of them so I left it out
>>
>>46598582
we always knew he was best friends, he will be a hero.
>>
>>46598577
Caela will not return to us. She is propably thinking that we stole her sister from her. Also she attacked the girl we waifu'd so no life for her. She has to die. I think the eagle would be a good way to end her life.
>>
>>46598648
BLOODY EAGLE? Yus anon good man.
>>
>>46598685
We should than let the hellraisers parade though her former home city with her in display. This will show the others better not to fuck with us.
>>
>>46598510
because it was part of her job. that's like the most normal part of being an evil overlord surrounded by more evil overlords. it's like the equivalent of a handshake.
>>
>>46598685
i vote we don't if not for us, for sophia. maybe hanging or death by a thousand arrows, but not the blood eagle.

You tell Marigold you aren't upset, but that you are disappointed in her lack of faith. She apologizes and you dismiss her back to her normal duties. The Hellraisers follow, dragging Shen's barbed corpse with them.

You look around at the ruined square. Shen did a good deal of damage before you arrived, and you both made a serious mess while you were brawling. It's a shame such a powerhouse had to go rabid, but such is the nature of the business.

You talk a walk back to your chambers, enjoying the cold evening air along the way. It relaxes you, and by the time you reach your door, you are ready for a well deserved nap. Unfortunately, as you enter, you spot an imp resting on your bed, spread out and snoozing as if he has any right. You clear your throat to wake him, and he leaps up startled.

"Gah! Good evening, sir! I'm a representative of Davison, Goldberg and Dagon the Undying! Rather, the firm formerly known as Davison, Goldberg and Dagon the Undying. We were recently merged with another firm, and are now under new management. I'm here to serve as a courier-" you tell him to get to the point so you can sooner bash his head in with your fist.

"Ah! Well I'm here to deliver this!" he shouts, tossing a card onto the floor in front of you. "That's all, I'll show myself out!" He vanishes into smoke, avoiding your now restored anger. You kneel and pick the card off of the ground, flipping it over to read its face. Nothing is abnormal about it, it seems to just be another business card from DGD, only now it reads DGDQ. The Q is perplexing, since you don't know any Death Lords by that name. You think for a moment, then another, then stop to clean and bandage your open wound, then think a bit longer, and come to a realization.

You look down at the card again. There are four numbers listed, belonging to the offices of the partners. Davison, Goldberg, Dagon, and the mysterious Mr. Q. It is in that moment that you realize you recognize the last number

Have to wrap here, sadly. I had a ton of fun today, and I hope you all did too! I also hope you come back next time for more! Maybe we'll see Vanessa again? Maybe we'll see Ray? Maybe we'll make out with ten hot chicks at once, because you literally control the course of the story by voting!

Remember to vote, and check the twitter, and to have a great week!

Now that's something to look forward to! Thanks for running and until friday.
>>
>>46598834
op, can we personally hire people to fill the positions that are being open? or they are being filled automatically in the background?
>>
>>46598784
naaah man. We shouldn't be too soft on traitors. Someone trying to kill us is one thing, but being a traitor? Hell no I say bloody eagly for her and everyone who helped her.
Though we could always go the japanese tour and let her get raped until she dies. Of course not by us but the drunken filth of thelon (forgot the name oh her home) or the hellraisers. Maybe gift her to mary as a present or out mage for some magic-human-experiment-shenanigans? Aahhhh things we could to to a traitor are endless.

>>46598866
Thanks man.
>>
>>46598990
You can, just know that you're blacklisted from hiring demons.
>>
>>46599051
Why?
>>
>>46599064
Ex-wife pulled some strings, got you blacklisted by every temp firm in hell. I'm sure I mentioned that back after the custody thing
>>
>>46599064
Our wife did this after we the trial for vanessa.
>>
>>46598946
It's Q forQueen of Pain. In other words our ex-wife.
>>
>>46599093
>>46599090
huh, I apparently never saw that. Fucking Cunt, Can we kill her at some point?
>>
>>46599090
damn, i thought that was temporary.... so what kind of extraplanar beings can we hire?
>>
>>46599180
None. Can't hire demons, can't hire angels. Stuck with mortal creatures
>>
>>46599260

What about that angelical lawyer that helped us in the trial?
>>
>>46599260
why the hell can't we get rid of it?
>>
>>46599260
damn...then what kind of mortal creatures can we hire?
>>
>>46599307
because our ex is a demon queen, and while we can pull a few strings to help us, she can pull a whole string factory.
>>
>>46599260
Reminder to kill that bitch and hang parts of her on every step of hell.
this will be messy, and this will be extremely gory, it will not be anywhere near what she deserves.
>>
>>46599373
we can always just... take care of it?
>>
sooo
