Welcome to Academy City. The time is morning, the weather is stuffy, and the date is February 14.

You are Kyril Torikov, Level 3 telekinetic combat cyborg, and you woke up in a hospital bed. Yesterday had you working with Grímsdóttir to bring a serial bomber to justice. It hadn’t been easy. He had set off a good amount of explosives in your face as you were trying to defuse them. You got him back for it though. His limbs would never be the same if Heaven Canceller hadn’t got to him. Somehow you doubted it. Seeing as he wasn’t in immediate danger of death, Anti-Skill had hauled him off to the Reformatory before he even got a trial. You doubted he would get one, or walk out of the Reformatory any time soon.

Still, the encounter had left your body in worse shape than it was. Case in point, this morning’s breakfast was pure liquid soup. Lunch and dinner promised to be the same and far be it from you to dismiss your GP out of hand. You were going to ignore his recommendation of little strenuous activity for the day though. Today was the day of a grand ritual and given the nature of your opposition, you didn’t think you could manage without giving it your all. You and the rest of the Problem Children were going to get Kyouko back.

That said, there was no clear time as to when the ritual was to start. You were only providing a safe location to where it could be conducted. Sagara was to thank for that. Kyousuke as well, though he was responsible for keeping your little financial empire afloat. Teacher was supposed to pop in later today as well, if only to lend his not insignificant muscle to the whole affair. Strong as you were, you doubted you could take on a so-called Magic God, even at your best. Thus it was a pleasant surprise that someone came to pick you up.

It was,

“How are you my student?” the old Code M asked.

Teacher looked the same as he did when you last met him, old, wise, powerful, and glowing green.

“Getting better,” you replied.

He smiled.

“I would hope so. You do have a part to play later today after all.”

He took off his hat and sat down next to your bed. His hand rose up over your stomach and you tensed. Sensing your discomfort he ask,

“May I?”

“What are you going to do?”

He retracted his hand.

“I suppose you would doubt any and all words from one such as me.” He shook his head. “I should probably ask for your mother’s permission first.”

You raised an eyebrow at his manner. He was usually the type to do as he pleased, both from your memory of New Years and before. You couldn’t forget that his power and strength were similar to a Level 5 and perhaps beyond it. There was a reason he wasn’t welcome in the City. Despite that, he had come to your aid, well partly. Even without CASIE, you knew he had his own reasons to be here. What those reasons were you could only guess at.

“What mess did you get yourself in to this time?” Teacher asked.

“Don’t you read the news?”

“Humour me.”

So you did. More than that, you spoke about your misadventures as Academy City’s guard dog. CASIE was well aware that he was asking leading questions but you didn’t mind. Teacher listened patiently, humming thoughtfully and nodding along at times. Even when you were finished he remained silent.

“So? What do you think?” you asked.

“What does my opinion matter to you?” he replied.

“It’s worth hearing?”

“Fair point,” he conceded, “Then let me say that you haven’t done anything I wouldn’t do. Given your circumstances it’s a miracle we were able to talk face to face again.”

What kind of weird praise is that?

“So my student, is there anything you want to ask me in turn?”

“Were you about to heal me?”

“I was about to temporarily make your body whole again,” he clarified, “Do you still wish for me to do so?”

“Please.”

“Very well.”

Teacher reached out again and the green glow extruded out from his hand and sank in to your body. Slowly it spread and with it your aches and pains vanished. Your Overall Combat Efficiency went back up to 100%.

“A temporary measure,” Teacher warned, “I will not be present to keep the spell powered more than a day and I would not like to overstay my welcome. That and your body needs to heal.”

“What will you do after you leave?”

“I don’t know.” He shrugged. “Beyond your friend’s wish for world peace I had not thought about what I personally wished to do. Perhaps I shall resume walking the Earth until it is my time. Yet, a journey without good travelling companions makes for a dull one.”

“Then perhaps I am ready for my next lesson.”

He gave a small laugh.

“Before you ask me that, let me ask you, what do you wish of your life? Will you be content living modestly, enjoying the love of family for the rest of your days? Or shall you forever seek? It could be an unobtainable goal, an ideal, or simply because you cannot stand boredom.”

Somehow, you thought his next lesson had just begun. It was true you had considered retirement but what would you do with it? Sure you would have more time to spend with Asuka and then what? The business inherent with your current would cease leaving you to pursue other things. What those things were, well, you had no idea. Your extended silence elicited a smile from Teacher.

“I’ll think on it,” you replied, “So what have you been up to Teach?”

“I suppose you would be curious after a student of mine introduced me to your new friend, and your pet Sikh.”

“Fujimoto-san, Touma and Kaoru,” you told him.

“Right, your betrothed’s uncle, the boy with the Right Hand, and the Sikh you are sweet on,” he continued, “Seeing as you had aided my student in his task, and a deal had been struck, I was of course obligated to aid you in yours.”

“I don’t recall wishing for world peace.”

“No, but it is preferable, to make rescuing your pet lich much, much more easy.” He paused. “Kid, if you having girl problems I feel bad for you son.”

“Then you shouldn’t, I don’t have any girl problems.”

It was a lie and you both knew it.

“As you say.” Teacher shrugged. “I took tea with Her Royal Majesty and arranged for a ceasefire between the United Kingom and France and Germany. While the Right Hand was off on his play date, I tested the Sikh’s resolve. I will say she had sunk to depths she had never before thought she could. Then I used Benjamin as gateway in to the City and let me tell you, security was atrocious.”

“When is the ritual scheduled to start?”

“We gather before noon.”

The time is late morning, the weather is fresh, and the date remains unchanged.

Teacher had left soon afterwards leaving you free. Before leaving the hospital you got reacquainted with your body. Teacher’s spells may only have been temporary but you were amazed at how much you had lost. Your organs weren’t just all in the right place, you felt like they were working better than before. That wasn’t taking in to account your sense of touch. Your metallic, cold, and unfeeling limbs were there, yet they could feel. You had woken up without feeling in your arms, and later, your legs and torso, but today you could touch. The rediscovery of a lost sensation was heady. You just grabbed and pawed at everything. Socks were soft, yet warm, glass was solid and cool. Water was wet. Thus your friends were surprised when you had later met up with them.

You had grabbed both Kyousuke and Sagara as you entered, hefting them each in your arms as you swung about the bar. Tadakuni, for once, didn’t look like he was in on a private joke. As for Asuka, well, you embraced her last. She sat in your lap with one arm draped over her shoulder, the other wrapped around her waist.

“Not to offend you boss,” Tadakuni started, “but what’s with the touchy-feely crap?”

“Not that I am averse to it but what brought this about dear?” Asuka asked.

“Magic.”

You smiled at Sagara. He pointed at himself just to make sure your gaze was on him before he seemingly got it.

“Right, so what’s the plan?” Kyousuke got you all back on track. “I mean Teacher definitely has a plan for all of us right?”

“If he did then he certainly didn’t tell me,” you answered, “Besides, he’s the one doing the heavy lifting isn’t he? I only provided the land.”

“I can live with being a mana dork,” Tadakuni said, “But I still want to see the action.”

“Or take part in the action, so to speak,” Asuka added.

Sagara and Kyousuke turned to look at each other. They certainly knew what the other was thinking so you asked them,

“Where can we get a good vantage point?”

“Helicopter,” Sagara replied.

“That’s a deathtrap in the making that is,” Tadakuni argued, “I’d like to keep my feet on good old terra firma for this.”

“Roof tops just aren’t the same man,” Kyousuke said, “Even if they are safer.”

“Less mobile too,” Sagara added.

Asuka could care less about the whole thing. Rather, the fact that you weren’t really paying attention was what was occupying her presently.

“How about we reconvene an hour before noon?” she suggested, “I think poor Kyril is a bit too distracted at the moment.”

There was some snickering involved before Asuka led you off. When you were less distracted you decided to,

Sagara’s helicopter, if you remembered correctly, was a stolen from a hotel as it was collapsing. It was in no way a military transport yet somehow, Sagara had found a way to install a minigun on one of the doors. It had a search light and a large bucket to catch red hot shell casings as well as over 9000 rounds of ammunition. Most of that was going to moved off to make space for passengers of course.

“Shotgun!” Tadakuni called.

“Good for you,” Kyousuke told him, “I got door gunner.”

“What?”

“What Kyousuke means is that you get to be the co-pilot,” Sagara explained, “Would the bossman, and bosslady, mind not dirtying the leather, just get it cleaned two days ago.”

“I am sure we cannot possibly be as slovenly as you are on a bad day.” Asuka gestured towards the portable stove in the back. “I am also sure that Kyril can, as the colloquialism go, ‘keep it in his pants,’ for the moment.”

“No need to get your panties in a twist,” Sagara replied.

“That would be impossible seeing as Kyril currently has them.”

The three boys looked at you.

“Sorry VERDICT cannot currently be reached for comment,” you said, “Please leave a message after the beep. Beep.”

Sagara shook his head and passed out the headsets and the mics.

“Now, if you lovebirds in the back can tear your gaze from each other from a blinking second, to your left, is out fabulous hive of scum and villainly, School District 10,” Sagara said over the mic.

The flight above was short. Academy City wasn’t so big that a helicopter couldn’t go from one end to the other faster than a car could in reasonable circumstances. That was probably why blimps were used extensively, in the air. Sagara had kept you below that altitude where they loitered and had assured you that local air traffic was the least of your concerns.

“We’re awfully close to those buildings man.” Tadakuni rightly pointed out. “You better not crash this one, I’m starting to like the seats.”

“Now if you keep your eyes out of the window then you can see us coming over the remains of the Russian Embassy that was being built.” Sagara valiantly ignored him. “In about a minute we’ll be coming up on our base of operations.”

“It seems our allies have arrived dear,” Asuka spoke.

True to her word, Touma, Princess Carissa, Kaoru, your boss, and strangely, a dog had gathered on the roof of your little HQ building.

“Should we land and talk to them?” Kyousuke asked.

“How much you wanna bet they’ll want a magical carpet ride?” Tadakuni added.

“I’m sure we can make some space back there,” Sagara answered, “What’ll it be boss?”

“Bring her in nice and slow,” you ordered.

“Aye cap’n,” was Sagara’s sarcastic reply, “You better believe I spent a fortune making sure the building was solid enough to land on.”

The craft banked and slowly started to descend. There were no helicopter pads, or makings on the roof, so the group that was on the roof started edging away as the copter came about. You weren’t sure whether their retreat was from not wanting to be squished by the helicopter landing or the minigun that was pointed in their general direction. Your appearance as the copter down only seemed to impress Touma. Tough crowd, you thought.

“Aren’t we going to be starting soon or something?” you asked them.

“We were just waiting on you nii-chan,” Nayuta answered, “Or at least Teacher said we should.”

The dog, a golden retriever, sneezed before padding up to you.

“This is the one?” A voice came from the strange contraption on its back. “You have still a long way to go as a Kihara.”

“Jeez jii-san, can’t you at least pretend that you aren’t upsetting the variables in this experiment.”

“Hmph, we shall see.” The dog dismissed you. “Make sure he gets the results we want.”

“I will already.” Nayuta’s annoyance at the dog(?) disappeared when she addressed you again. “Sorry about that, Noukan-jii-san is here to observe the results of my hard work.”

CASIE understood her unstated words. This was a test. Doing well would look good for you. You weren’t sure what exactly they wanted you to do though.

“So are we ready to begin?” you asked.

“Just moment,” the Princess said.

Nayuta rolled her eyes. The built in clock of your helmet displayed 1157. Princess Carissa drew a blunted sword, one that held no edge or no tip. It was a treasure of the United Kingdom, part of the coronation regalia, a Code M artefact beyond all compare and the centrepiece of the noon ritual. The glowing yellow sword held in Her Highness’ hand was called Curtana. As the sun hit the zenith, the blade flashed once, swung in casual manner. Exactly one and a quarter seconds later, the yellow trail it left behind split, turning green as a wave of yellow spread out.

Then came the rumble. It was low and slow. The wind started to pick up before finally, a monstrous yellow form stepped out. You couldn’t even begin to describe the amorphous mass that just spilled out. Slowly, it formed in to a shape of a man.

“Well now.” His voice was unmistakably pissed. “Interrupting my private time is just plain rude.”

He stepped forward and suddenly the gravity of the area multiplied. The pressure forced you in to the ground, on to your knees. Only Touma remained standing in the maelstrom of yellow. It licked about him, unable to reach. The man tilted his head.

“So why don’t you just die already?”

Then a green beam swept him off his feet in to the distance. The pressure disappeared but the portal did not. In this brief reprieve you,

As everyone picked themselves up, you noticed Princess Carissa was touching her ear.

“Alright, it’s all on you now Teacher, keep him occupied.”

“Heh, I would not expect the Princess of War herself to suggest that I merely occupy the Mad King Ollerus,” was the reply given.

Given the proximity, you watched as he rose up from the floor without a single solid object.

“Surely you must think I am capable of besting children running around with knives.”

Princess Carissa snorted.

“If you think you’re so good then you better give him a good drubbing,” she ordered.

Teacher then turned to the dog.

“I’ve seen the phrase ‘dog of the City’ bandied about but to think that someone would take it to its logical conclusion.”

“Enough,” the dog metaphorically barked, “We let you in for one purpose.”

“While you are not serving yours,” Teacher observed.

“The honour goes to your student for this one.” The dog smiled. “We shall see how he performs.”

Teacher shrugged before he walked off the side of the building and kept going as if the floor continued under his feet. The group remained silent until he was well out of earshot.

“Well, what now O Glorious Leader?” Tadakuni chose that moment to break the silence.

You pointed at the portal.

“We’re going in,” you replied.

“Are you insane?” Princess Carissa asked, “You can’t just jump in to random portals and hope for the best.”

“It’s not like I haven’t done it before,” you shot back.

“That’s really not helping your case nii-chan.” Nayuta shook her head.

“Only those that want to come with me are free to join.” Your eyes fell on Touma. “Well, everyone but Touma I guess.”

Asuka seemed a given, as was Sagara and Kyousuke. Tadakuni looked apprehensive but if you forced the issue he might just do it. On the other hand, you might need an anchor on the other side. That left you with Princess Carissa, Nayuta, and the dog.

“Alright, I’ll pick you.” You pointed at Nayuta. “And you, and you, and you, and you, and you as soon as we find a leash.”

The dog’s sneezing seemed to be the human equivalent of a snort if CASIE was to be any help.

“Oh and one last thing before we step through, I’m going to need a bigger gun, Sagara do you mind?”

He helped you safely dismount the minigun. You hefted it like a girl would heft a handbag before turning to assembled.

“Alright here we go.” You turned back to Touma and the Princess. “Hold down the fort you two. And no snogging alright?”

Her Royal Highness, who had sheathed her sword, crossed her arms and pointedly looked away with a huff. Touma simply wished you luck. The Problem Children, Kaoru, Nayuta, and a golden retriever walked through a portal. Then you were immediately beset by an obstacle.

Marching in front of you in perfect lockstep were creatures of some sort. Their form looked like robed people. Their colour was not uniform and you could make it out despite the blue haze that seemed to colour the whole area you step in to. The others didn’t seem to notice save for the dog who actually snorted.

“Eh? Noukan-jii-san can perceive Code M emissions too?” Nayuta asked.

She was deliberately playing up her surprise.

“The air is so thick it’s a wonder your pet project can see at all,” the dog replied, “So tell me VERDICT, what do we do?”

His tone was testy. You looked at the army that moved to a hidden cadence that blocked your path. On some level you knew that Kyouko was deeper in wherever this was. You looked to your left then to your right. There was a marching column as far as the eye can see. Above you saw a pane of stained glass. A brief telekinetic push and you confirmed that physics still somewhat functioned. As you closed on the army the figures stopped and in perfect synchronisation came about face with you as if forming an impassable wall. It didn’t matter how high to rose above them they still faced you.

“So it has the power of experimentation,” the dog huffed, “Is that supposed to impress me?”

You ignored the dog and flew up the window. There was a latch and you could open and go through. When you went through, you found yourself on the other side of the marching figures. Supposedly anyway, since you couldn’t see anyone on the other side of the figures. Perhaps this was another floor. Peering through the window, you could clearly see your group down below(?). Looking above a haze of blue floated above you. You reached down and pulled everyone up swiftly.

“Well we definitely changed location,” Nayuta chirped up, “Whether this is actual progress or not remains to be seen.”

“Kyril,” Kaoru spoke, “do you see where my mana is disappearing to?”

The swirling yellow Code M emissions of Kaoru’s drifted off in to the air before joining the blue haze above you. You pointed it out to her.

“The Mad King chose his defences well. Above us is a spell, or what I hope is a spell that continually feeds on other, more hostile spells.”

“And let me guess, touching it turns us in to tang?” Kyousuke asked.

“Most likely but we could not be sure. Unless there is another way to deliver a spell to it without my mana being siphoned off as I build it up then there is no choice but to interact with the barrier physically.”

“Then it is fortunate that I am here,” the dog spoke, “This is a shortcoming of VERDICT through no fault of its own. I will have to discuss the possibility of providing the specifications to you later Nayuta.”

“So that backpack of yours is not just a simple laser designator?” Nayuta asked.

“I would ask whether your own is merely a teleporter, or simply the gateway to your private reality.”

“Alright, so you can blow it away,” Tadakuni interrupted, “doesn’t mean you should though. Who knows what’ll happen.”

“As opposed to simply touching it?” the dog snarled.

“Let’s not waste time here, do it,” you spoke to the do.

“I don’t take orders from you boy but at least you understand expediency,” he growled, “Nayuta bring me my suit.”

“Coming right up Noukan-jii-san.”

Nayuta had reached in to her backpack and widened its mouth. Slowly, she tilted it dowards until several containers came tumbling through. The dog walked over to them and pressed a paw down a particular one. Breaking apart, pieces and components flew out and around the dog becoming an unknown type of powered suit. It was then to your surprise that you found that a part of it, a drill, glowed red/blue as it came online. The mixture of Code M emissions grew before it was somehow transmitted in a tight beam up to the barrier.

Amidst all this you noted the growing horror on Kaoru’s face but it was too late to say anything about it now. The barrier shattered before thunder erupted. It sound like a giant mechanism had abruptly stopped, like a gearshift gone wrong. Falling from the sky, you could see the unconscious form of Kyouko floating down, glowing her usual blue. You grabbed her as gravity inverted itself. What you had previously been standing on was now above. Similarly the army of marching figures scattered in all direction, literally. They marched up, down, left, right. Their feet seemed to define the “ground” relative to their bodies. If only you could say the same of your party.

“We need to get out, this place is collapsing,” Kaoru shouted.

“I’ve plotted our movement,” Nayuta added, “If we can retrace our steps exactly then we can get out.”

“Do we have time though?” Kaoru bickered, “If my hypothesis is correct we have been standing on the ceiling all along.”

“Would make sense, given how gravity works.” Nayuta conceded.

“We would have to account for the impact, assuming we have time to freefall,” Asuka said, “Keep falling or follow Nayuta’s instructions?”

Use TK to bring one of the marchers over to us, manipulate the ground it walks on to give the party ground to walk on. Cushion our landing with TK

I wonder if Kyouko is naked?
>>
“Everyone hold on to something,” you shouted.

You had to hold Kyouko’s fortunately clothed body in one arm and grab on to Asuka with the other. The boys, grabbed Kaoru who in turn grabbed Asuka. Nayuta was held aloft above you as the dog had her by the neck while trying to futilely direct his mini-jets in to some manner of flight. Since your hands were full, you had to trust that Nayuta’s grip on your body was enough. You directed your controlled fall right behind one of the marching figures. Feet first, you landed on solid ground though the weight of everyone else threatened to pull you down and off the precarious platform. It seemed that the path the figures took were permanent. If you had kept falling, who knew how badly hurt you could have been. There were no visual evidence of their path.

Of course CADRE soon rectified this as it charted the path of all the marching figures within your sight. Overlaying it with Nayuta’s calculations and you had a path out, if somewhat labyrinthine.

“Come on this way.”

Thankfully, everyone had seemed to come to the same conclusion as you did. Your party caught up to the marching figure ahead shortly. The dog’s attempt at overtaking the figure was met with it nearly falling in to the abyss again. Just as you set him down farther down the path, he fell again. It seemed there was a limit to the platform, well no matter. All you had to do was stay relatively close to the marching figure, switching paths with jumps predicted by CADRE and double-checked by Nayuta.

As soon as your party stumbled out of the portal you came upon Teacher, Touma, and the Mad King. You weren’t sure where Princess Carissa was but hopefully she was fine. The roof top was cracked, Sagara’s helicopter laid split in two. Both the Magic God and Teacher seemed to be on their last legs. Touma too was panting but at least he didn’t have literal holes that could be seen through all over of his body. They all turned at your entrance.

“They thought to kidnap my queen from me,” the Magic God said, “I will beat them to death with your own spine.”

Teacher smiled.

“That is where you are wrong.” Teacher raised his hand. “I’m sorry my student but the need is great.”

Before you could even ask what he was asking of you the pain from this morning returned. No, it was worse as it was drowned out by a high pitched keening noise. Whatever spell Teacher had cast on you, he was taking it back because you could hear him enunciate clearly,

“Wholesomeness Rightly Assumed.”

You were also aware of screaming and collapsing in to a heap on the ground. Your eyes still worked and you watched as Teacher’s body reverted to a pristine state. He even had the hat he had lost back on his head. He must have used you as some kind of trump card because as soon as he did that, the Magic God brought out a spear. Teacher contemptuously batted it aside and their fight resumed. All you could do was simply,

>Push Touma in to the fray
>Order in supporting fire
>Watch and learn
>Other (write-in)

mind you touma makes everything betterl in addition mind you canonically he held off othinus, can explode gungnir, and can take on othinus's super attack, between that and the shit with HP, he would probably be stupidly useful right about now.

“Supporting fire,” you uttered in to your helmet.

Apparently no one had heard you scream yourself hoarse when you boneless collapsed. Kaoru and Nayuta, who had been looking you over started.

“Nii-chan, don’t talk, your ribcage was just rebuilt yesterday,” she huffed.

Kaoru simply nodded. Your head tracked Tadakuni and Sagara scavenged what’s left of the minigun’s door mount and fashioned an improvised tripod mount as Kyousuke dragged the minigun where you had dropped it over. The dog was taking potshots but otherwise he wasn’t having much. Teacher and the Magic God were evenly matched until you heard Sagara shout.

“Shot over.”

Teacher must have known a he seeming took a thrust from the spear cleanly. The Magic stood baffled by the action until you hear the angry buzz of a minigun open up. Kyousuke’s aim wasn’t perfect but the tracers licked up and down the Magic God and threw up smoke. They had simply disintegrated. The smoke was simply what was left of the bullets as minigun spent a full box of ammo laying down supporting fire. Once the smoke cleared, there was nothing left but a severed leg and arm.

“He got away,” the dog noted.

Teacher spat out a glob of blood and spoke,

“But not without losing a key item.”

Teacher slid it out of his heart with a squelch and nearly slumped on to it.

“Gungnir is a spiritual tool that can destroy worlds and remake them alike. At least for a Magic God since to us, it is merely a pointy stick.”

“This isn’t over,” the dog said.

“Of course.” Teacher agreed. “The hunt has just begun, and it is only going to get wild.”

With that, he leapt off, leaving but a cloud of cracked concrete to signify his departure. The door to the rooftop slammed open. Her Royal Highness Princess Carissa was dishevelled but not immodestly so.

“What did I miss?” she asked.

Episode End.
