You are Captain Kusajishi Riku, and right now is officially relaxation time. Your subordinates have orders to stop certain loud Lieutenants and their zanpakuto at the gate, and they know not to disturb you with paperwork until you actually put in an appearance in your office. For the time being at least it's possible to unwind from a long series of brutal engagements that have left you feeling exhausted and sore all over.

Outside you can see that unseasonable clouds have gathered in the sky, and a light rain has begun to fall on the Seireitei as you pick out an absentminded melody on your guitar's strings.

“That's odd, there wasn't supposed to be rain today.”

Yoruichi sets aside a mostly-empty cup of lukewarm coffee, looking up from the newspaper she's been reading to look out the window. “Raijūsenkō caused it.”

That's actually a little scary when you stop and think about it, that the release of electricity was so powerful it changed the weather entirely by accident. These days it seems your wife is getting to be less of a fighter, and more of a literal force of nature. Certainly it means that her opponent was impressive to survive without releasing his zanpakuto, even if according to Yoruichi he got his ass kicked.

As the rain falls more steadily your mind begins to turn involuntarily towards the ongoing crisis facing the Seireitei. If Aizen were to make his final move today, how would you counter him without even being able to use shikai? Could your subordinates and allies face arrancar and Sternritter under the same circumstances? The more you weigh the odds the longer each dulcet tone you strike seems to hang, as you reach the conclusion that such a scenario would be an unmitigated disaster.

“Something has to be done immediately,” you resolve, the melody from your guitar's strings coming to an abrupt halt. “But what?”

Yoruichi sets aside the newspaper entirely. “Yamamoto's faced this zanpakuto before. Records say he had a way to counter its effect but don't go into detail, so we'd have to ask him directly.”

“You sure none of the other old hands would know, like Unohana or Shunsui?” Speaking of whom, it seems like Shunsui is on the move at this very moment. Yoruichi seems to notice it as well, taking a moment before responding to your question.

Your wife eventually shakes her head. “The Head Captain and Ginrei were the two who sealed Muramasa's wielder, so they're the only two who ever knew the trick.”

That'd be a great lead were it not for the fact that one of the witnesses is long dead and the other is missing without a trace, probably having been attacked by the very enemy you want to ask him about. You'd likely have to fight off Muramasa and his band of brainwashed zanpakuto to get to the Head Captain, and if you won that fight who knows if you'd even need to ask the question... too many caveats and what-ifs to that situation to think about resolving it right now.

>We should try and find Yamamoto first, resolve that situation before dealing with Muramasa.
>Perhaps we could pre-empt Muramasa somehow? Draw him out and crush him personally?

>In the mean time...
“Shunkō: Raijin Senkei!”

Yoruichi's Shunkō explodes out from her shoulders and back, threatening to shred even her ōken-enhanced haori with its intense pressure. Even still, the frown on her face makes it obvious: this technique only manages to close the gap, and she knows it. Grimmjow laughs like a maniac.

“Now that's what I'm talkin' about, shinigami!” he crows as Yoruichi pushes and redirects the incoming blows she knows she can't dodge outright. “This is the kinda shit I was hopin' for!”

Yoruichi grins right back at him. “Careful what you wish for.”

With a roar she unleashes a deluge of rapid, shunkō-empowered jabs: Raiōken. Grimmjow's eyes widen as he takes a pummeling. He's quick enough to block most of the punches with his raised arms, but the overwhelming speed of the beating leaves him little room to counter as it pushes him back across the rooftop. Finally he sees an opportunity, and rolls back to throw a twisting side kick towards Yoruichi's left temple. She raises her left hand and mutters something, bringing Grimmjow's attack to a complete standstill.

Grasping his hakama, Yoruichi rotates herself through the air and delivers a downward kick towards Grimmjow's face that the arrancar is forced to block with both arms as it slams him into the rooftop. It's only then, with his arms committed to a block and his body position completely off-balance, that Yoruichi grins.

“Gotcha!” she taunts as a shining spear of reiatsu forms in her right hand, her left still grasping Grimmjow firmly around the ankle.

“Shunkō: Raigeki!”

The blast catches Grimmjow right at the center of mass, blasting him down through the building below and into a courtyard where he leaves a smoke-filled crater.

You're pretty sure it's Avalanche that's on guard duty at the gates to the officers' quarters today, so you enter the number of their fireteam leader into your denreishinki. The little device rings three times, doubtless because the soldier on the other end can't believe you're calling him.

“Captain? What can I do for you?”

“Fireteam Avalanche, you're on gate duty right now. Am I right?”

“That's right, ma'am.”

Good. If it hadn't been right that might have gotten embarrassing. “Captain Kyōraku will be there in a few minutes, I want you to wave him through for me.”

There's a brief pause while the team leader considers how you knew that, but he quickly seems to accept that it doesn't really matter in the end. “Yes ma'am, I'll be sure to. Anything else I can do for you?”

“Nope, that's all. Carry on.”

You hang up.

“Seems like someone didn't get the memo,” Yoruichi sighs. “Weren't we supposed to be relaxing?”

You smirk in response. “I find your lack of faith disturbing, Yoruichi. I've got my reasons.”

“I'm sure you do.”

A few minutes later there's a knock at the door to your quarters, and Shunsui pokes his head into your reception room. He holds a little clay bottle with writing on it... you may lack the ability to read it thanks to Tenkotsuki's condition, but you know what's inside. “Could we have a little chat? I brought awamori.”

“I figured you'd try to butter me up with booze,” you smirk, pulling out an extra cushion from the closet.

“You disapprove?”

“Not at all,” you admit, tossing the cushion to the floor. “Why do you think I let you in?”

Awamori: the drink of choice in the Ryukyus, noticeably different from the sake and shochu found in the rest of Japan. For a moment you remember an evening on an isolated beach, a thin white line between emerald green jungle and clear calm seas glistening under the Southern Cross. The smell of your first solo kill roasting over an open flame with sweet potato and wild tree fruits, the smooth flavor of a bottle of fifty-year aged awamori passed between proud father and even prouder daughter. The kind of bottle that simply hasn't existed in the decades since the war, both the first and last you'd ever share with your father.

The brief pang in your chest subsides as suddenly as it came on. Yoruichi's eyes narrow, but she manages not to say anything.

“So, I hear you had an adventure this morning,” Shunsui begins, calmly sipping at his own drink. “There was a report and everything.”

“There may have been a bit of an invasion,” Yoruichi admits. “But we dealt with it.”

“Seems the rest of us aren't making much progress.” Shunsui sets his drink down. “Unlike some others I could name, I'm not too proud to admit when I'm stumped.”

“Humility comes along with experience?” you ask.

“You could say that.”

Japan's military structure has adapted to the modern times while we're still organized like an edo-period army. Yoruichi completes her maneuver, landing in a low crouch facing the ruin where her arrancar foe crashed to earth. She draws one of the butterfly swords on her back as the smoke abruptly clears, revealing a wild-eyed Grimmjow as he charges a powerful cero.

Most of his uniform has been burned away and his skin is cracked and bleeding where the Raigeki struck him, but as a wounded animal Grimmjow has grown even more dangerous. As he releases the Gran Rey Cero with a wordless scream of fury, Yoruichi slings her sword high into the air above her.

“Purr,” she growls, “Raijūsenkō!”

A blinding flash engulfs Yoruichi, forcing Grimmjow to shade his eyes. When it fades he lowers his arm to find his opponent transformed. Her close-fitting pants and gauntlets now end in bright concentrations of reishi which cling to her ankles and wrists, hissing and flickering like lightning condensed into razor-sharp claws. More cause for worry, it seems his attack had far less effect on her than he'd anticipated.

“What the hell is that form?” he wonders aloud, shutting his eyes to open a pesquisa. When he feels the full weight of Raijūsenkō's reiatsu his eyes fly open again in alarm.

He draws his sword.

“Finally taking me seriously?” Yoruichi muses, her voice reverberating like distant thunder as her eyes lock with Grimmjow's. They're cold eyes, black as night and absolutely pitiless, staring down at him with an intense fury.

The eyes of a hollow.

“Well, too late,” she hisses in his ear.

“As much as it bugs me that we don't have a clear interim Head Captain,” you admit, causing Shunsui to cock an eyebrow before you clarify your priorities for him, “I'm more concerned about securing the one we have from whatever Muramasa has planned for him.”

“Neither of us have ever seen him fight, so we're not sure what we're even looking for,” Yoruichi explains. “All we know is we can't sense his reiatsu like we should.”

Shunsui frowns, stroking lightly at his stubble in contemplation. “Well now, that's a dilemma. Thankfully I've known the old man for longer than I'd like to admit.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Let's keep it simple,” Yoruichi suggests. “Why would Yamamoto leave the Seireitei without warning?”

“I suppose he'd do it if he knew he'd have to release his zanpakuto,” Shunsui explains after taking a moment to consider the question. “That's the only thing that makes sense. He'd head out to the Rukongai because he knows releasing Ryūjin Jakka carelessly could kill many of his own subordinates.”

“So he's probably in the first or second district,” you conclude, considering the speed of your own movements and the range of your Bankai to be the best basis of comparison. “And you think it likely he released his sword? Then why hasn't he killed Muramasa?”

“It could be that he's using Jōkaku Enjō, a barrier of sorts.”

“So he sealed himself off the same way Tenkotsuki did?” you ask.

Shunsui nods. “Possibly. At least that's what seems likely when we stop and think about it.”

>... I HAVE THE BEST IDEA (write-in)
If I remember correctly, based on how Tenkotsuki sealed herself off in the inner world, we can stretch out our 6th sense and locate the place you can't sense any reiatsu/reishi whatsoever since it can be inferred that Jōkaku Enjō uses reishi/reiatsu as fuel for the flames. So those who can detect reiatsu, look for any place where it's they sense void of reiatsu or where they feel their reiatsu is stiffled.
>>
>>46565307
Isn't she keeping herself locked down so she doesn't go crazy like the other swords?

Also,
>Should you or I give the orders to prioritize finding him? They might not like the fact Riku giving the orders since she inadvertantly caused them to lose their zampakuto in the first place.
>>
>>46565328
yes, but the way she locked herself down is the key: to quote:
>Your eyes reveal the same sight as last night, though your heart is now prepared for it: Tenkotsuki has surrounded herself with some form of kidō barrier you don't immediately recognize. The amount of reiatsu it uses is massive, and it's mostly divine in origin. It even totally stifles any reiatsu you can sense as well, so you can't actually feel Tenkotsuki herself in the slightest: in effect, she has cut herself off from the rest of the universe. You have no doubt that anything much short of a living god could crack this shelter even if they somehow found their way inside your soul.
Key word is: "It even totally stifles any reiatsu you can sense as well"
>>
>>46565188
>... I HAVE THE BEST IDEA (write-in)
Might as well enlist Kaoru's expertise in this for both locating and unlocking the barrier if it comes to that.

>Should you or I give the orders to prioritize finding him?
>>
>>46565401
that may not be the case. Even if Yamamoto's sealed himself off from Muramasa via flames, that doesn't mean he can't physically give orders unless he requires uninhibited total concentration like tenkotsuki (of all things, the divine foxgirl just had to be susceptible to motionsickness)

“Should you or I give the orders?” you wonder aloud.

Shunsui pours himself another glass of awamori. “Sorry to say it, there are still a couple of us who are sore about you calling a meeting.”

“Komamura?”

He nods. “Komamura.”

“Then could you do me a favor and take the lead around the Seireitei?” you ask. “I have the beginnings of a plan for finding the Head Captain.”

“You got something?” Yoruichi asks, perking up.

You shrug. “We could try and find a place with no reiatsu, like a dead zone.”

“Under the assumption that they used a barrier to contain Yamamoto's flames,” she nods. “The Kidō Corps may be able to help with that.”

“I'll send Kaoru a request,” you suggest. “Any other ideas?”

>"Time Out"
“The simpler my deal with the God of Time, the more powerful the results!” the monstrous green mound of muscles that was once an old-timey bartender brags. Mirai, thoroughly unimpressed, begins to wind up with her sword in hand as if preparing a powerful underhand pitch. “Now I've become stronger than...”

“Sesshōseki,” Mirai interrupts as her sword whistles in a blindingly fast arc, straightening and expanding into the familiar form of a stone-studded warclub.

The resulting nutshot is nothing short of cataclysmic.

Sesshōseki's progress doesn't stop for anything. It shatters the Fullbringer's entire pelvic girdle before thrusting the fragments upwards through his body like shrapnel from a grenade. A bit of bone that doesn't look like it's a tooth flies from his mouth, and the word “impossible” never quite manages to leave his lips before he dies from the shock of the impact.

“I told you,” Mirai repeats with a sidelong glare as the man collapses to the floor, “I do not care about your abilities. If you threaten my comrades' lives, I will kill you.”

>Jackpot

With each punch the young punk throws, Hisagi merely redirects the momentum with a casual slap of his palm or a blow to the wrist. It's clear his opponent has had more than his share of frustration.

“The hell's wrong with you!?” the punk demands loudly. “Fight back!”

“This is lame,” Hisagi frowns, knocking aside yet another painfully slow punch. “What's the point of hitting that “jackpot” when you can't even land a punch?”

“Dammit all!”

With a sigh the Commando grabs the Fullbringer by the wrist and delivers a powerful strike to the back of his elbow, bending the limb at an unnatural angle in a shattering of bone. The punk doesn't even realize he should be screaming by the time the follow-up roundhouse kick connects with his partly-shaved dome, ending the fight on the spot.

“Kids these days,” Hisagi sighs, scratching at his hair. “All talk.”

“Feel free to share.”

“Well,” Yoruichi reasons aloud, as if pondering the implications herself. “My release caused this rain, and I know Hitsugaya's sword can control the weather. Doesn't Ryūjin Jakka have a similar property?”

Shunsui's face lights up. “Actually, it might. The flames cause massive evaporation within an area around them. Makes it impossible to use any ability revolving around ice or water, because the air is bone dry.”

“Even if Muramasa erected a barrier on top of Yamamoto's, it would likely still dry out the surrounding air,” Yoruichi continues. “So it wouldn't be raining there.”

“Sheer dumb luck,” you grin. “It's entirely possible Raijūsenkō gave us the answer, but it may not have.”

“Oh, decisions,” Shunsui chuckles. “We started this conversation with no clear options and now we have two.”

“Your fault for wearing white after Labor Day,” Jackie responds casually. “Aren't you going to defend yourself?”

“Nah,” Gin replies, still grinning. “Don't feel like it.”

“I'll make you regret that overconfidence...”

After several minutes however it becomes apparent that Gin's “overconfidence” is actually well founded. Each kick is dodged by the narrowest possible margin, and the grin never fades from the Captain's face.

“You bastard!” Jackie pants, launching another assault with her legs. “Just hold still so I can beat you up!”

“Fine.”

With a loud crack and a surprised yelp of pain, Jackie breaks her toes against the side of Gin's head.

“See? That's why I kept dodgin.”

You weigh the options in your head: both have advantages and disadvantages, and either one could turn out to be a complete waste of time. So you're eventually forced to consider the possibility that splitting your focus may actually increase your odds of success.

“The Onmitsukidō can probably execute a search of the First district by looking for dry spots,” you suggest. “The Patrol Corps should be able to cover a massive area, then move outwards if need be. I'll help Kaoru with the reiatsu sensing plan.”

Yoruichi nods, rising to her feet. “I'll oversee the search personally. If either group finds what we're looking for, delay until reinforcements can arrive.”

“I don't like the idea of one Captain taking on half the zanpakuto in the Seireitei, regardless of who it is”

Tsukishima looks down at his chest in shock. That's not right. Why is Yoruichi's hand sticking out of it like that?

“How?” he demands, gasping for air as Yoruichi withdraws her hand from his ruined lung. “After all our years together, how could you...”

“Betray you?” she hisses, her voice filled with a cold rage at the gradual return of her memories. “It's nothing of the sort. You just fucked with the wrong memories.”

The Fullbringer falls to his knees, bright arterial blood dripping from his lips. “Are you saying you resisted the Book of the End?”

“You removed Riku from my life,” Yoruichi explains, hauling him back up by his hair. “A sociopath like you could never hope to understand what you'd taken, let alone how to replace it. The pervasive sense of emptiness in every memory you slithered your way into made it painfully obvious.”

Tsukishima chuckles, a grim smile spreading across his face. “So it's “the power of love”, then? How absurd.”

Yoruichi scowls as a bright mass of reishi builds in her free hand, just inches from her enemy's face. “Like I said, I don't expect you to understand.”

“I'd suggest someone should communicate with the other Captains in the mean time,” you sigh, rubbing the back of your neck. “In case we fail it'd be good to figure out how to proceed without Yamamoto. Ask Gin, I get the feeling he's made some progress towards restoring his zanpakuto.”

“How could you possibly know that?” Shunsui asks, setting aside his cup. The awamori he brought is finally gone.

You smile fondly at the notion. “Oh, call it a mother's intuition.”

Unsurprisingly, your senses betray yet another interruption in what should have been a relaxing afternoon. Not long after there's a call from the front gate.

“What is it?” you ask the fireteam leader, pinching the bridge of your nose.

“There's a man here to see you,” he tells you. “Black and green clothes, sandals, and a weird hat.”

You can hear Urahara's protest on the other end of the line.

“So Kisuke's here?” Yoruichi muses, setting aside her own cup. “Wonder what he's got on his mind that brought him all the way out here?”

It probably has something to do with your report, but Yoruichi has a point: you're not entirely sure what part of that report could have caught his attention to the point that it necessitated a personal visit.

With a stern glance and a gesture of one hand Rangiku commands Haineko to move again and again, bouncing Yukio up and down by his ankles like an invisible bully trying to shake the lunch money out of his pockets. The young Fullbringer's arms are spread wide by the ashes lodged inside his Fullbring itself, leaving him utterly powerless to enter in any more commands.

“Let us out!” Rangiku demands, crossing her arms under her breasts.

“Never!” Yukio insists for what must be the tenth time.

"Alright then, try this," Rangiku smirks, directing Haineko's dust to tickle the young man's sides. In spite of himself, he can't help but snicker.

Eventually he gets a hold of himself. "That won't work you crazy..."

The Lieutenant sighs at the outburst, and proceeds to spin her Fullbringer victim head over heels until he loses his lunch.

“I'll be down in a moment,” you sigh, shutting the phone. “Yoruichi, Shunsui? Care to join me?”

A few moments later you approach the guarded gate where Urahara's been stopped, and you see him wave even as your fireteam salutes. He's still wearing the goofy hat.

“Tell me that's not gonna become a part of your uniform,” Yoruichi taunts her old friend.

He smiles back at her. “No promises.”

“Where's your husband?” you ask, looking around for Tessai. Honestly you'd expected him to join Kisuke sooner or later.

Kisuke shakes his head. “Tessai won't be joining us. He's looking after the many barriers all throughout Karakura town.”

“Okay, so be straight with me here,” you insist. “Why are you here?”

“I'm here because I heard about your prisoner,” Kisuke tells you, the look in his eyes suddenly far more serious than what you're used to. “Miss Halibel was the one who cut off her arm, correct? If so, her condition may still be dangerous.”

“If you don't start explaining things simply I'm taking your hat,” you threaten.

Urahara seemingly relaxes a little. “Please don't. It's my identifying feature.”

“Follow me.”

Yoruichi seems to follow what Kisuke may be thinking. “You think Halibel's reiatsu may be harming the prisoner?”

“I know that's how it happened with Masaki,” you add, “but can it be the result of a nonlethal injury too?”

“I can't say that it's impossible, but all the evidence I do have suggests it might happen. Your captive Sternritter may slowly be succumbing to poison as we speak... it could even explain her apparent compliance, if it's weakened her mental resolve.”

That's a troubling thought. As you work your way deeper into Ninth Division's grounds, eventually entering the holding area, you consider another possibility: that healing Bambietta Basterbine may undo what little progress you've made in her interrogation.

Finally you reach the right cell, and Kisuke's expression darkens.

“Seems I was right,” he tells you. Looking at Bambietta you can tell she's feverish despite her wound having been treated properly, and you're not sure at first whether she's even conscious.

“I take it you didn't come here just to say you can't help her?” Yoruichi muses. “What have you got up your sleeve?”

From his actual sleeve, Kisuke produces a small syringe. “I prepared this a long time ago, on a hunch that it could become relevant.”

“What is it?” you press. “It looks like...”

“Blood plasma,” Kisuke replies sternly. “With a twist: I've engineered these plasma cells to produce a certain suite of 'antibodies' that normally remove traces of foreign reiatsu within a spiritual body. They're antibodies that quincy have a genetic deficiency of.”

“And how did you do this?” Yoruichi asks, clearly surprised that such a specific answer was even possible.

The truth dawns on you fairly soon after your wife asks.

Kisuke turns to you. “You remember how I took a blood sample from you the day we met? You have antibodies in your bloodstream that are compatible with multiple sorts of reiatsu. That includes quincy, meaning that if I inject this plasma into Miss Bambietta it should allow her body to begin naturally rejecting hollow reiatsu.”

Your response is simply to place a hand against your forehead and sigh. “You literally what?”

“Whatever happened to you between the moment you died as Rosa and woke up as Riku,” Urahara explains further, unknowingly referring to the moment when Tenkotsuki and Rosa met in the Dangai, “it changed the rules, as it were. A quincy became a shinigami in all ways but some traces of her memory, and your spiritual antibodies were a part of that process.”

“All I had to do was isolate it, replicate it, and put it into a needle.”

“So what side effects might there be?”

“It may be rough at first as her body gets used to it,” Urahara tells you, “and as with any injection it's always possible that it could be rejected. But most significantly to your current situation it may return her mind to its usual function.”

“You're saying it may actually make her stop cooperating with us?” Yoruichi asks, seemingly grasping the logic but wanting to make sure.

Kisuke nods solemnly. “It's possible, yes.”

“She's potentially a valuable source of information,” Yoruichi muses. “She may stop cooperating, but then again she may die if we leave her as she is.”

“I say do it.”

Kisuke shakes his head. “I can't say either way.”

You take the syringe from Kisuke's hand.

“I'll do it,” you announce. “It's my responsibility, through and through. If it goes wrong then I'll take responsibility for that as well.”

Urahara nods. “Anywhere is fine, but the heart would cause it to spread quickest. Her blut should make that relatively safe.”

You look down at Bambietta. You're not entirely sure whether she can hear you or not as you kneel down...

… and ease it almost effortlessly past the helpless woman's weakened blut, sinking it deep into her heart and depressing the plunger.

For a moment after withdrawing the needle nothing seems to happen. Then, the Sternritter lets loose an unearthly scream: like a keening banshee being beaten to death with a bag full of wildcats in heat. You find yourself screaming in alarm, you can hear Yoruichi yelling something, and in the next cell you can hear what sounds like Menoly sobbing in terror as Bambietta thrashes wildly on her bed, hands clutching at her uniform right over her heart. Her eyes widen until they look like they're about to burst from their orbits, still making that ungodly noise.

Without thinking you draw Kobara no Tachi, slash at your left palm, and slam it down over the needle wound. A steaming surge of your own blood stains Bambietta's white uniform as it forces its way into her body, coursing through her veins after the injection. Almost miraculously your ears are greeted with the sweet blessing of silence.

Bambietta's thrashing ceases as she settles into the mattress again, your blood having dispersed throughout her body. Her body feels almost painfully warm for a second, then that warmth fades.

You remove your hand to find the wound nearly gone, no more than a faded scar.

The Sternritter's breathing is normal, and her eyes open slowly.

“The hell was that?” Yoruichi asks as you turn around to face them. Urahara's raised his hands in a defensive position, as if he expected Bambietta to explode in your faces.

You glance at the Sternritter, then back at your friends. “I think I used my own blut to kickstart hers, or something?”

“That's exactly it,” Rosa comments in the back of your head, sounding honestly impressed. “I didn't realize you knew that was a thing.”

“It is?” you ask, confused.

Kisuke exchanges a glance with Yoruichi. “Is what?”

Yoruichi shakes her head. “Don't ask.”

Well... that may not be completely accurate. What you used was regular kaidō: you can simply use it through your blood if you concentrate hard enough. Maybe not useful in the middle of battle, but it seemed to suit this situation perfectly. Without it, Bambietta's body may have undergone soul suicide.

“What happened!” Menoly demands loudly. “I can't see a thing from here!”

“Okay,” you shake your head, “I'm officially done with this sort of spiritual-science bullshit for today. Thanks for coming Kisuke, the door's that way.”

Bambietta sits up and stares at you. “You stabbed me in the heart.”

“I did,” you nod. “To save your life.”

“What was in the needle?”

“A serum made from her blood,” Urahara informs her. “It gave you the spiritual antibodies all quincy are missing.”

“So if I got stabbed by another hollow...”

“You wouldn't be poisoned to death,” Yoruichi concludes. “Yeah. That was the idea.”

Bambietta is silent for a moment, then lays back down on her bed and rolls away from you. “I need some sleep, you people are so insane it's exhausting just having you around.”

“No,” you sigh, “what do you really think?”

“I'm sure she'll appreciate it,” you tell him. “Don't be a stranger... and lose the damn hat already.”

After a brief exchange with her old friend before he leaves, Yoruichi turns to face you. “So, we finally ready for business?”

“Yeah, let's get started before...”

Even as the words come out, you're interrupted by a powerful wave of reiatsu as something finds its way into the Ninth Division's grounds. Menoly sits up straight, while Bambietta mutters something and puts her pillow over her head.

"... fuck," you curse your poor timing, hand finding the hilt of your sword. Yoruichi turns to face down the hall as the reiatsu approaches you, grasping the hilts of her butterfly swords.

"Who can that be?" she grimaces.

The response, surprisingly, comes from Menoly. "Ulquiorra... Schiffer..."

A lanky, pale-skinned arrancar turns the corner and approaches you at a casual gait. You sense no hostility, or rather no real emotional content of any kind from him. His uniform is the same reverse-color shihakusho as the other arrancar you've seen from Aizen's forces, and his eyes are a sickly green. His mask fragment is on the side of his face, and two lines of estigma run down his cheeks from under his eyes.

Curiously, he has no zanpakuto on his person.

"So here you are," he states... not really strongly enough to be a declaration, and it's almost like he's not even saying it for your benefit. It's almost a strange lack of feeling in everything he does and says.

Let's not push the envelope right now, anon.

Maybe later if it turns out she -is- fine. But I have a feeling there is more hollow juice (or at least more being pumped directly into her) than the bleedoff from Halibel cutting her arm off.

Basically, stop giving the quincy hollow-goop for fuck's sake.

You begin tapping a short message to Halibel into your denreishinki, and Ulquiorra stares at you blankly.

“That is unnecessary,” he tells you. “I am only here to bring a message at the request of Lord Aizen. I am completely unarmed.”

“You'll have to forgive us if we don't take you at your word,” Yoruichi counters.

“Shihōin Yoruichi,” the arrancar mutters as you complete your message, reaching one hand up to his left eye. “Of course. Take whatever precautions you feel appropriate. I will not be long.”

With his hand he seemingly pries out his eye, holds it out, and crushes it. Yoruichi, whose posture has been one of tense anticipation, relaxes ever so slightly... and you immediately understand why. The image of a desert, a familiar-looking figure killing an unfamiliar man before retreating. Then the vision ends.

“As you can see our organization was attacked by the arrancar known as Arturo,” he explains the scenes you've been shown. “He snuck into our realm disguised as one of what we call the Privaron Espada to hunt down a strong fighter.”

“And why exactly did Aizen order you to tell us this?” Yoruichi demands. “Don't tell me it's a sense of fair play.”

“Lord Aizen's plans require this third party to be neutralized,” Ulquiorra drones. “That would become complicated if he were allowed to act unchallenged within the Seireitei, particularly if he were to take the power of your Head Captain.”

Ah. So that's it.

“Don't take a single step,” Starrk snaps, placing his hand on Lilynette's shoulder as if preparing to release on the spot. “It'd be a pain in the ass for me if you did.”

Ulqiorra looks at you, as if expecting something.

You catch Starrk's eye, and shake your head at him silently.

“What do you mean?” Lilynette demands loudly, shaking her head back at you.

You sigh. “He's an unarmed messenger. I won't condone attacking him if he hasn't attacked first.”

“I appreciate the courtesy,” Ulquiorra bows stiffly, “even if it is unexpected. Lord Aizen told me to expect far worse.”

“Well, Aizen and I don't see eye to eye on a lot of things,” you shrug. “Like how he thinks he's not a complete asshole, but I know better.”

Ulquiorra opens a garganta to his side. “Do you have anything you wish to say to Lord Aizen?”

“I'm coming for him,” Yoruichi snarls. “That's all he needs to know.”

“Agreed,” you nod.

Menoly presses her face against the bars of her cell. “Ulquiorra! Bust me out of here, please!”

“No,” he replies stoically, stepping through the garganta and disappearing.

There are several moments of painfully awkward silence where nobody in the room either moves or speaks. That silence is finally broken by Starrk.

Apacci did teach them the kido incorporated Hollow sonar technique, might as well put that technique to good use, as it can detect reiatsu deadzones.
>>
>>46571897
This sort of was a KUBO episode. There were a lot of things I wanted to either set up/foreshadow or tie off. For example, the blood Kisuke collected like fifty threads ago. Maybe not this precise scenario, but it was intended for something along these lines.

Pesquisa is essentially a reiatsu sonar. Sending a pulse wave out and reflecting any sources of reiatsu as well as reiatsu size. If they can sense places/people that have reiatsu, then it can also detect reiatsu "deadzones" as well.

“We'll split the teams,” you suggest. “Halibel and Apacci can go with you, Starrk and Lilynette will come with me, and Sun-Sung and Mila Rose will stay in reserve with Rangiku.”

“Works for me,” Yoruichi nods.

You leave your prisoners behind, one now healthy and perhaps more cooperative than before, the other completely crushed. Starrk and Lilynette follow close behind you, and you make your way towards the Kidō Corps together.

“So what are we doing again?” Starrk asks with a tired sigh.

“We're trying to find Captain Yamamoto and rescue him from Muramasa,” you explain. “We'll be searching for a barrier that blocks reiatsu sensing.”

“Oh. Well, I guess my pesquisa could come in handy. Shall I try it?”

You stop atop the execution ground hill, short of the Kidō Corps, to allow Starrk and Lilynette to press their hands against the ground and close their eyes.

A few moments later another ripple reflects off of you: this time from Apacci, possibly the most skilled arrancar in any application of reiatsu that doesn't involve raw power.

“Nothing within our range,” Starrk concludes, rising to his feet. “So within the Seireitei itself, there are no barriers that could match that description short of the one right below us and the one below the Ninth Division.”

“Least it's not raining on us anymore,” Lilynette observes.

“Alright, let's move on.”

“Ah, Riku!” Kaoru greets you at the gate to her unit's barracks with a warm embrace. “You're a welcome sight. Any word on the zanpakuto issue yet?”

“Not yet,” you admit. “Gin may be contacting you some time soon about it.”

“Fair enough. So, what's going on? What was with that powerful reiatsu before?”

“A messenger,” you explain as you walk further into the barracks with her. “It ended without a fight for once. As for why I'm here, I need a hand finding something.”

“What would that be”

“The Head Captain.”

Kaoru stops in place. “So, you think you have an idea how to do it?”

“I'd be looking for a barrier that blocks reiatsu, which would account for why Yoruichi and I can't sense his reiatsu itself.”

Your sister nods thoughtfully as the beginnings of a plan form in her mind. “Kakushitsuijaku.”

“Gesundheit,” Starrk replies.

“It's a spell,” Kaoru explains, resting her hands on her hips. “One designed to locate spiritual powers. With some adjustment I should be able to find this “dead spot” you're looking for.”

>it IS similar to how I imagine her despite being Shuutara
Your sister produces a large brush from a storage cabinet, nearly as long as she is tall. You've used these before, while learning Shiba style fireworks and gunnery techniques, and Kaoru's immense degree of practice and skill with such a tool allows her to produce an intricate seal for an immensely powerful Kakushitsuijaku. The circle ends up being about eight feet wide.

“I'll need you to do the initial casting,” she explains. “Then I'll add an incantation to add power to it.”

You nod, understanding what Kaoru has planned as you kneel by the circle. Starrk and Lilynette watch curiously to one side.

“Heart of the south, eye of the north, finger of the west, foot of the east,” you chant in a low voice, focusing your reiatsu. “Arrive with the wind and depart with the rain.”

“Bakudō 58: Kakushitsuijaku!”

Across from you Kaoru performs the chant as well. The Seireitei scrolls by your vision at lightning speed, one sector at a time. Then the Rukongai: First District North, then South, then East and West. Next the same for the Second District, and even the Third.”

“That's enough,” you sigh, breaking off the effort. “We even saw all of Yoruichi's unit, but not what we were looking for.”

“It was just the barriers around the training area Lady Yoruichi set up below the execution grounds, and the one under your Barracks,” Kaoru sighs. “The spell was flawless. Maybe the Head Captain went further out than we anticipated?”

A 2-fold barrier system. If he's not in Seireitei nor in the Rukongai, then he's outside this realm. Places that aren't within the realm of soul society include ghost mexico, our valley of screams, the latter seems more likely.
