Pastebin is updated. I keep a running tally of the XP in my own notes, but I keep forgetting to actually post them.

===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

You decided to travel north towards Olstren along with your retinue and Seren auk Caunys, whose family rules lands near the border. There have been suspicious movements in the area - merchants turned away, troop deployments, rumours that Olstren wants to close the border, that sort of thing - and you decided to personally investigate. The information is recent enough that your own contacts haven't told you about it, but in this case, it's a good thing. Whatever's happening, you can put a stop to it before it becomes a serious problem.

The carriage rolls into a small town just big enough to hold the Caunys castle. After several days, your journey has come to an end.

"Your highness, now that we've arrived, I'm certain my father would be glad to meet with you," Seren says. "He should be able to tell us about anything that might have happened while we were traveling as well."

"It might be better to stay away from the castle for now," Myrddin says. "No one knows we're here. We can benefit from the element of surprise for a day or two."

"I'd rather make our presence known," Olwen says. "I'm curious to see how Olstren's forces will react at the prince's presence."

"So am I," Myrddin says. "I'd just like to be prepared first."

"We'll stay at a quiet inn for a day or two," you say. "Myrddin's right. If I provoke Olstren into action, I want to be smart about how I do it. Seren, can you recommend a place?"

Seren puts a finger to her chin. "I can think of a few," she says. "I suppose it depends on what kind of inn you want. Merchants stay at the White Gold Coin Inn if they don't have anywhere else to go, while commoners stay at the Horseshoe Inn. There are a few others, but those are the major ones."

"What about places of ill repute?" Myrddin asks.

Seren's face turns bright red. "How would I know anything about those kinds of places!" She yells in offended tone.

"No, not that kind of ill repute." Myrddin dismisses her indignation. "I'm talking about thieves and smugglers."

"Oh." Seren thinks for a moment. "The Black Veil Inn, I suppose? Father said it was a shady place. I don't know how nice it is though. Actually, if you want a private place, we might be able to rent a house. Visiting nobles and wealthy merchants do that sometimes."

"We'll stay with the merchants at the White Gold Coin," you say. "It's their goods at stake, so they should know what's happening. Myrddin, can you take care of our guards?"

"I'll see to it they have a place to stay near us," Myrddin says. "If anything happens, they'll be able to reach us quickly."

"Good." You turn to Seren. "Can you tell us where the inn is?"

"Of course, your highness," Seren says.

The town isn't very large, but it is close to the border, so it has an above-average number of inns to accommodate travellers. Seren leads you to one of the bigger inns closest to the northern entrance. It has stables fit for carriages and even some warehouses. Myrddin sends the guards somewhere out of the way so they can change into less conspicuous clothes and take up rooms in different places. His people will know how to contact them if necessary.

Your carriage enters the grounds of the White Gold Coin Inn and an attendant comes to greet you. His clothes are good, but not too fine. It looks like he can handle rough work, if necessary.

"Welcome, sirs and ladies," he says with a bow. "How may we help you today?"

"We need space for our carriage, as well as two rooms for two," you say. "A hot meal wouldn't go amiss."

"Of course, sir," the attendant says. "May I inquire as to your business in this town?"

This could be a chance to learn something, if you can come up with a convincing excuse for why you're here.

You step out of the carriage and help Olwen and Seren out after you.

"We're travelling," you say. "Looking for new opportunities to expand our business."

"Many merchants come here looking for fortune," the attendant says. "Sadly, too few of them achieve their goals. I hope you are better."

"So do I," you say. "A merchant needs to be daring, but I don't like unnecessary risks. This time, we'll be looking into Olstren."

"In that case, I doubt you'll have much luck," the attendant says. "Things have been strange at the border lately."

"So I've heard," you say. "Unfortunately, it's too late to change our plans. We'll have to figure something out."

"For what it's worth, I hope you do," the attendant says. "It'd be better for our business that way. But I shouldn't bother you with such things. Come, I'll show you to your room."

You're assigned a room with Myrddin, while Seren and Olwen will share the room next to yours. The rooms are quite nice ̶ they come with a bed room, lounge and bathroom ̶ and the view isn't bad either. After unpacking your luggage, you congregate in the dining room for roasted potatoes and grilled beef skewers.

"This isn't bad," Olwen says. "It has that rustic feel to it that you don't get from the palace's kitchens."

"It's a common regional dish," Seren says. "It's easy to eat and cook, so it's convenient for hunters and soldiers."

"I wouldn't mind tasting a more refined version of it," Myrddin says. "That aside, how do you want to proceed with information gathering, your highness?"

You snort and stand up. You casually walk around the dining room on your way to the exit and keep an ear out on the merchants' comments to see if an opportunity arises.

"I wish the beer around here was made of sterner stuff," you hear one of the merchants say.

"The fields around here are too cold go grow hops properly," one of his companions says. "It's hard to get the right bitterness."

There you go.

You casually saunter over to the merchants and smile. "I know what you mean," you say. "I wouldn't drink bitter stuff all the time, but it cleanses the palate every now and then. It's a shame it's so hard to get around here. I really miss my brewery some times."

"Brother, you own a brewery?" One of the merchants asks. His eyes gleam with opportunity. Or possibly alcoholism. It's hard to tell at this time of day.

"Yeah, it's a little place near the capital," you say. "I've been thinking of expanding, actually. I can afford the transportation fees, but I don't know anyone who can handle the distribution."

The merchant laughs. "I know a few people who can help you with that," he says. "I can arrange some introductions, if you can make it worth my while."

"Certainly! However, I heard things haven't been going too well here lately," you say. "Something about problems on Olstren's side of the border?"

"Odd business," the merchant says. "I heard the Duke of Machrain is massing a small army. There's no conflict in Olstren that we know of, so Gwyrddarfordir's his most likely target. The strange thing is…"

"Machrain is no where near here," you say.

Which means the duke's son is getting involved with things that aren't his business.

You note the merchant's name so you can make the trade arrangements later and return to your companions. You share the news you receive and discuss the implications.

"Well, we know there's an army," Olwen says. "We know enough to make preparations."

"Or we could accidentally provoke them before we're ready," Myrddin says. "Our situation hasn't changed all that much. What do you want to do, your highness?"

"I hope your highness' judgment is correct," Seren says. "If my family's lands are attacked…"

"The prince won't allow your people to be harmed," Olwen says. "Even if Olstren does encroach upon our lands, we'll force them back."

"If we're lucky, we'll be able to settle this with an easy assassination," Myrddin says. "Both easier and cheaper than a war."

"We'll consider that later," you say. "For now, we need to decide how we're going to proceed."

"We can try sneaking through the border during the night," Olwen says. "It'll be dangerous if we get lost or if we're caught."

"I'd rather try to cross the boarder as merchants," Myrddin says. "We'll be able to see first-hand how Olstren is turning people away, and it's less likely to arouse suspicion."

"You have fun with that."

You leave Myrddin to his bottle and knock on the ladies' room. "It's me," you say. "I want to check up on you."

"Come in!" Seren calls out.

You enter the room and immediately shut the door so that no one else can see. The blood immediately rushes out of your head and into your… other head.

Olwen and Seren are in their nightgowns, still damp from the bath. Seren's displays her bountiful cleavage and while Olwen's is very slightly more modest, the way she crosses her legs so that her nightgown slides up her thigh most certainly is not. Your brain shuts down and you dry very, very hard not to ogle them.

"Your highness?" Seren tilts her head and gives you a confused look. She's not faking it either. Doesn't she realize what she's wearing? "Is something wrong?"

"Did you need anything?" Olwen asks. She presses her lips into a thin line to hide her smile. She's doing this on purpose and you both know it. Is this some kind of revenge? It's because you wouldn't make her your consort immediately isn't it? Goddamn it, it's not like it's your fault that you have so many problems to deal with and women can't even make the top ten list yet.

You cough awkwardly and sit down. "I just wanted to talk for a bit," you say. "See how the two of you were doing."

"It's the same as always for me," Olwen says. "Kingdom's imperilled, we come in and save the day, we go back home and move on to the next thing. I've gotten used to it by now."

"I must admit this is a bit different for me," Seren says. "I spent most of my time managing my family's alchemical labs. It can be difficult sometimes, but it's never quite so… exhausting."

"That's all it takes for most nobles," Olwen says. "There's nothing wrong with that. So long as you're doing your duty, you're doing your duty. It's appreciated if you want to go beyond that, but no one expects you to do it."

"Thank you, Olwen," Seren says. "I'm glad someone understands."

"If it makes you feel any better, I dealt with it better than his highness did at first," Olwen says. "If it hadn't been for Myrddin, I think he would have lost his mind."

You remember when you first got involved with the kingdom's affairs. There were so many problems to deal with that you didn't even know where to start.

"It helps to have excellent advisors," you say. "You need to learn what you can delegate and what you need to take care of yourself."

"Thank you, your highness!" Seren smiles brightly a bows, giving you a good look at everything under her nightgown.

In an instant, your faces flushes. Olwen's eyes widen and she briefly chokes on her tea. You suspect she didn't want to take her little private joke quite this far.

"Yes, well, for now, you can rest until tomorrow," you say. "I still have some things to take care of."

"I'll bet," Olwen quips.

You stand up and leave as quickly as you can without embarrassing yourself further. As soon as you're out of the room, you lean your forehead against the wall and let out a sigh of relief. However, you can't help but notice something is a little off. You open your eyes a crack.

"Greetings, your highness," the woman says with a curtsey. "I wish we could have met under more formal circumstances, but a friend of mine told me you were here and I simply had to meet you. There's something I'd like to discuss in private. I believe it would be beneficial for both of us."

>"Okay, fine. Let's talk."

Well for one we only have to cover ourselves, two one extra blade which is duelist oriented will do jack fucking shit against two heavily armored foes. Especially in close quarters. "Okay, fine." This isn't a cold shower, but it's close enough. "Let's talk."

"Thank you, your highness," the woman says. "I reserved a table at a nearby restaurant. Please escort me."

You dutifully offer the woman your arm, keeping your face impassive as you do so. You follow her directions - and her four gigantic guards - to a nearby restaurant. The guards wait outside while a servant brings you to a private table. Fortunately, the establishment is crowded, so there's no worry that you'll get jumped.

"So, what would you like to discuss?" You ask.

"Love problems, unfortunately."

Fuck your life, you really don't need any more of this right now.

"The first man I was supposed to marry died in war three years ago," the woman continues. "The Winterbread skirmishes. Have you heard of them?"

"In passing." You were there, actually. It was a small war against Olstren, and one of the first battles you commanded. "My condolences."

"Thank you," the woman says. "The second man I was supposed to marry drowned at sea after falling off his ship. The third was killed by a wild boar while hunting."

The story seems oddly familiar, but you can't quite put your finger on it.

"The fourth was killed in bed by one of his jealous lovers, while the fifth and sixth killed each other in a duel over my hand."

Oh. Well, that explains that.

"How tragic." You calmly poor the woman a glass of wine. "Tell me, what can I do for the Widow Princess?"

Princess Reagan mac Connaught, the king of Olstren's only child, is most famous for her string of dead suitors. Olstren's power is decentralized and the king's succession is unstable, so a civil war is likely upon his death. The princess' odds of survival are not very encouraging according to what you know.

"My seventh suitor chose to prove himself worthy of me by conquering his own lands," the princess says. "Unfortunately, he can't wage war against anyone in Olstren, so he came to raid Gwyrddarfordir."

And that explains what the Duke of Machrain's son is doing around here.

"I'm quite grateful for this information," you say. "I would prefer to have peaceful and profitable relations between our kingdoms."

Now that you know who's involved in this and why, it'll be easier to make plans. You doubt any other nobles will want to get involved into this.

"That is my wish as well," Reagan says. "Gwyrddarfordir is fortunate to have the Victorious Prince. I'm afraid the Widow Princess' reputation is embarrassing in comparison."

Meirion's Basic Plan for Basic Bitches

(1) Confirm imminent Olstred invasion/raid. [DONE]
(2) Discretely ready an superior force near the holdings in an attractive ambush site.
(3) Victorious Prince does Victorious things. Clarify with Reagan whether she wants the Duke's kid dead or just thrashed a bit.
(4) Do NOT marry the Widow Princess, but hint/nugde/wink that we might be happy to support her claim to the throne (on paper at the very least).

"In fact, I wouldn't mind borrowing your highness' reputation," Reagan says. She reaches across the table to gently stroke your hand.

You resist the urge to bang your head against the table until something breaks.

"The men of Olstren are simply too deplorable," she says. "They only care about the throne, and none of them have the talent to earn it."

"Royalty is a demanding responsibility," you say. "Few people understand that."

"I'm glad that your highness is one of them," she says. "I think I would enjoy it if we could support each other. Of course, my current suitor would have to meet a tragic end before that could happen."

"That is unfortunate," you say. "And I'm afraid I can't make any commitments at the moment."

"Oh, I understand," Reagan says. "Svekka and Rosea have their own princesses after all. However, if I could spend time with your highness in the future, that would be fate. Those who go against fate are doomed, aren't they?"

In other words, she'll help you arrange for her current suitor to join his predecessors in exchange for a few dates.

We don't have to marry her, but if we help her secure her succession we earn a strong ally.
>>
>>46555404
So all we have to do is date her a couple times to solve the current issue? DONE!

That said, on the dates make sure we have a contingent of guards, we choose the locale, and we have everything tested for poison

>"I'm afraid I'd rather handle this on my own."

so she DOESN'T like him. That complicates things, certainly.

>"I'm afraid I'd rather handle this on my own."
don't let her dirty her hands, that's got the potential to blow things up even further. It won't strictly end badly for us, but your neighbors descending into civil unrest is hardly a good thing.

I suppose we could still take her up on those dates, though.

"I would greatly enjoy the pleasure of your company in the future," you say.

Reagan beams, genuinely glad at your response. "I shall look forward to it. It seems my current suitor's future" - she slides a folded piece of paper across the table and you pocket it immediately - "is quite unfortunate."

"He was doomed the moment he set his sight on my country," you say. "I simply hope that this can be resolved with as few complications as possible. And that I won't be the next one to join him."

"You have no reason to worry about such things." Reagan smiles behind her wine glass. "You're not like those boorish thugs. Nothing untoward will happen to you, regardless of our personal or professional circumstances. I guarantee it."

That's certainly a relief.

Why would she though?

Given the discussion so far, we're her best shot at her sitting on the Olstred throne after her father's death. The risk isn't until after that.

It wouldn't be in her best interests, given that she'd be burning her bridges with a powerful neighbor, but I can see it happening if she wanted to avoid looking like a Gwyrddarfordir puppet.

The trick would be to get some leverage over her before she takes the throne, proof of her involvement in one of the many deaths of her suitors perhaps?
