Welcome back, to the second installment of Mecha Space Pirate Quest.

If you weren't here last time, you are First Mate Roarke Susan Starwind (age 26 Terran years) of the Iron Kestrels, nicknamed "Dude McCool" by your Captain. You have a taste for the music of Ancient America's 1980's period and habitually eschew ranged and melee weapons in favor of an unarmed brawling style, an unusual but not ineffective choice.

Last time, you survived the ambush that crippled your pirate crew and killed two of your squadmates, Louis Raffsberger and Thelma Longgarden. You would have perished too, as your destabilized microfusion reactor decayed, but thanks to a stroke of luck and having the pluck to search for a new reactor rather than sit and wait for help, you discovered a large humanoid mech buried in a crater. Thanks to your technical acumen and plenty of spare parts cannibalized from the damaged Harpies of you and your squadmates, you managed to restore it to functionality and are now making your way back to civilization.

As an additional stroke of luck, your narrator was able to stat out your as-of-yet nameless mech and finish most of your character sheet.

Next post, plot.

First Thread: http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/46489044/

It has been a long two weeks since you desperately repaired the mech you found and went off in search of your missing comrades, backtracing the flight data from your Harpy's HMIS (Human-Machine Interface System) to the nearest high-traffic interplanetary route that crosses the asteroid belt between Mars and the Jovian Colonies.

Fortunately for you, you were able to flag down a passing scavenger ship and barter for passage. Which is excellent, because even with all of the meal bars and juice capsules you scavenged from Louis and Thelma's Harpies you aren't sure that you wouldn't have starved to death before reaching a neutral population hub.

The scavengers that picked you up were grateful that you could point them in the direction of a battlefield they could loot, and quite willing to accept your credits in exchange for food and scrap metal to finish the repairs on your new mech, but you don't like the way Captain Ashta looks at your machine (pic related) and take to sleeping in your cockpit in case he tries something funny. As good as it feels to stretch your legs in an oxygenated environment, you're happy to finally see them off at California Station.

California Station itself resembles a series of great metal tumors protruding from the surface of a mined-out asteroid, surrounded by four residential and agricultural colonies that provide for the needs of the residents. From the outside, they look like giant metallic cylinders with sheaves of solar panels at either end.

The asteroid itself is a starship depot with massive repair and production facilities, but it requires authorization to get in. The colonies, however, generally turn a blind eye to pirates so long as they don't cause trouble. This makes it excellent neutral ground, it's far enough away from Jupiter that UJCIDF forces are rarely seen, but the asteroid itself is important enough to the Jovians that only a suicidal Captain would try to take over the asteroid and risk retaliation from a UJCIDF battlefleet. It's the closest major population hub, a common haunt of the Iron Kestrels and a handful of other pirate crews, and the most likely place for you to track down your friends. You've checked out many times, but you're not sure you'll ever really leave. After all, you got your start as a pirate here.

A somewhat sleazy docking official demands an inordinate tip not to ask questions about your machine as you book a bay for it on Colony 1. Although you're able to pay for it, if you don't find either the Kestrels or new work soon, you're going to run out of money in a few weeks.

During your journey, you had time to power-clean your new ride and get a better look at it. The spherical pauldrons it initially had were badly cracked and damaged, probably from whatever destroyed its original head, but you were able to build a pair of simple flairing pauldrons to cover the vulnerable shoulder joints. In the process, you discovered a nonfunctioning MAGNETIC GRAPPLING ANCHOR and launcher. Although it's broken, you were able to record its data as a potential upgrade for whenever you find the Rhinehawk or a new pirate ship. Grapples aren't exactly a new technology, but customized aspects of this one greatly reduce its weight.

With the armor cleaned up, it looks something like pic related, a rather old-fashioned machine with boxy lines and heavy armor.

Its current stats are as follows:
>>
>>46549648

You welded part of the hull of a damaged lightweight arrowhead-shaped pirate mech that can transform into a jet onto the back of the shoulders to provide structure for your sensor core. Do you know how hard it is to find pictures of robots with jets for heads?

>>46549621

Perhaps eventually, I dislike twitter.

Head: Currently, your mech's head and shoulders plainly have armored plates from the arrowhead-shaped body of a Harpy covering the three glowing orbs of your compound sensor core. Like the point of a Harpy's fuselage, the armored cowl comes to a sharp point in front of the forehead, while the melted and twisted stubby wings and fan-shaped tail protrude behind the shoulders and have been flattened over the back of the neck joint respectively. It still looks like someone melted a small, dark-colored jet onto the upper back of a large, tan-colored mech and slathered bits of the jet across the chest to fill in the gouges in its armor. It would have 5 Spaces available for equipment and be able to take 6 Kills worth of damage, with its armor providing 6 Stopping Power if it weren't a slapdash job. As it is, it only has 2 Spaces available, and can take 5 Kills worth of damage.

Arms: Its current loadout consists of a rectangular Large Shield (Defensive Adjustment 0, Stopping Power 12), mounted on the left arm, and a custom-made Armored Thruster Fist on the right. The Armored Thruster Fist (6 Kills, Handy, Quick) is something you threw together when you were first repairing it, as a defense against the Green Skulls or other pirates. Essentially, you welded a lot of spare Harpy armor and the two weakest thrusters on the right forearm and the knuckles of its clawed hand to give it added punch, with the thrusters facing back towards the elbow. This would be a waste of metal and a desperation weapon for most pirates, who would probably have tried to integrate the guns of your squadmates' Harpies into its design, but you are a man who appreciates the purity and excellence of unarmed combat, even your old Harpy was equipped only with brawling options. Your arms both have 7 Kills of structure, the Left Arm has 5 Spaces available for equipment, the Right Arm has 6.

>>46549761

I have no idea, and neither does /m/. The reason why I saved it in the first place was because it looked interesting and nobody knew what it was. General consensus seemed to be that it was fanart and somebody just made it up, but it's telling that it could easily be a real Zeon Mobile Suit.

>>46549908

They saved a lot of cost on names by simply writing down the noises a two-year-old makes.

>They saved a lot of cost on names by simply writing down the noises a two-year-old makes.

Thats all fine and dandy, but I feel sorry for the father when the names for the Dom and Rick Dom popped up.
>>
>>46549936
Why exactly was the captain of the ship we hitched a ride on eyeing with interest, as opposed to outright disgust, a mech which clearly looks like someone with the barest knowledge of engineering haphazardly welded five different utterly-trashed machines together, crossed their fingers, and turned the ignition (which, funnily enough, is basically more or less what happened)?
>>
>>46550219
well it's still a old war relic much like a diamond coverd in shit it's still a diamond that with a bit of cleaning and some polishing is stil worth quite a bit.
>>
>>46550331
Honestly, once we get better non scrap parts and get it in good order, it would be a pretty strong contender. As is, it's still a pretty strong mech. Just needs some armor, fresh coat of paint and a actual mechanic and tools to properly put it together.
>>
>>46550442
how i think we could should build this mech is give it a pair of shields then a pair rending claws, some realy powerfull booster rockets to get us close to the enemy realy fast and finally maybe an AT hammer for anything that's to big to claw to death.

maybe even a few bits with beam weapons to cover us while go fast towards the enemy they don't even have to be accurate just close enough to suppress our enemies

Torso: Your mech's torso is broad and brawny, with the excessively squarish lines of older Bucephalus Heavy Industries models. It has articulated plates around the waist, with an assembly of three adjustable thrusters shielded beneath for maneuverability, and an additional pair mounted on the back slightly below the shoulders. The cockpit is mounted in the gut, behind heavy walls of interlocking armor. Your cockpit incorporates your chair from your Harpy, because you've had time to wear a comfortable groove into it and you like the color, as well as some of your belongings. Your aviator shades, signifying your status as an Iron Kestrel, your father's prized harmonica, and a signed poster of Red Siren with a kissmark that's still as crimson as the day she gave it to you. She's a former S-Pop Idol who turned space pirate Captain, and although that's not really your style of music you met in a bar one night and drunkenly karaoked 'China Girl' together. The harmonica is a fairly cheap one, but your dad always made it sound beautiful back when he was alive. You feel pretty safe decorating your cockpit, because in addition to a backup sensor core mounted on the chest the cockpit has the ability to eject as a spherical escape pod in the event of catastrophe. It also has a standard Liftwire, an extendable cord with a foot loop attached that can extend or retract with a command from your PC (Personal Comm) when the cockpit is open, a large storage module, your Anti-Theft Code Lock Deluxe you were glad you could salvage from your personal Harpy that opens with your personal code and sends an alert to your PC if someone else tries to open it. Best of all, it has your customized stereo system, which can be broadcast via loudspeaker at the touch of a button and the most amazing speakers you could steal. Even with all of this equipment, it could still fit 2 Spaces worth of additional equipment if it weren't for hasty repairs. As it stands, 0 Spaces, 12 Kills, 6SP.
>>
>>46550605
Well, punch shields are always a thing and oddly enough, I can see a heavy charger for our build. Ramming speed in, and stick to the target with our melee and that cable.
>>
>>46550605

That's actually an available upgrade, which you'll have access to once you have a mecha bay and a mechanic. The California Station people could do it, but that's expensive and draws attention. Which is why...

>>46550219

...this is partially incorrect. Roarke's Technical Ability stat is high, and you have enough points in the Mecha Tech skill to build a mech from the ground up, albeit poorly. This is virtually a necessity for Harpy pilots, because Harpies are fragile and prone to breaking.

Also, and I'm glad you brought this up so I could mention it, the sensor cores and HMIS are the most expensive individual part of a mech besides a good pilot and have a good value to weight/illegality ratio, making them prime scrap for scavengers who just want to turn them into cash.
>>
>>46550706
and we also get around the problem with one big shield in that one side of our mech would have a big dead spot sure the shields wouldn't be to big but seeing as how we are skilled in melee deflecting shouldn't be a problem.
>>
>>46550763
Which explains the looks we got. Three sensors plus old war tech would be a small gold mine for a scavenger.
>>
>>46550824
It's not like we have to downsize the shields if we are going battering ram with the punch shields. Could use the magnetics and maybe sub arms to hold the shields when we need our hands for other things.

Legs: The legs are strong and sturdy, with the wide weight-dispering feet of older models. New ones tend to have narrower, more graceful looking feet with microthrusters to let them dance around, but there's something reassuring about being stompy. The front comes to a blunt point, while the heel is wide and rounded. An armored skirt is attached to each chunky, armored knees and extends down over the half almost to the heel, with an array of seven thrusters on each to provide main thrust. Due to the thruster array, no Spaces remain for additional equipment, each leg has 7 Kills (for reference, a Kill is a point of both structure and damage, effectively each leg has 7 HP for instance, while your Armored Thruster Fist does 6 HP of damage against an unarmored target), with the same 6 Stopping Power in armor the other servos all have.

As a note, the properties on your fist Quick and Handy allow it to attack twice with one action (attacks are rolled separately) and function as a hand respectively.

You were only partially correct earlier when you said it was faster than the Harpy, it turns out. It can move 500 meters in a ten-second turn, around 112mph, but much to your disappointment when you reached for that button on your Harpy that let it transform into a jet and double its normal speed...you found it currently lacks the capacity for transformation.

It weighs in at 50.5 tons, giving you -5 to all Reflex rolls while piloting it. This sounds like a lot, but even a small and maneuverable mech inflicts a penalty of -2 or -3, and further upgrades can make up for the lost accuracy and dodging ability.

It would be classified as a Medium Weight mech, on a scape going from Superlight to Lightweight (a Harpy) to Striker to Medium Striker to Heavy Striker to Medium Weight to Light Heavy to Medium Heavy to Armored Heavy to Super Heavy to Mega Heavy.
>>
>>46551025
not a bad way to get around that problem yeah we are pretty much going to be an armored battering ram with wolverine hiding behind it.
>>
>>46551025

I can confirm this. Shields, like Hands, are interesting in that they only take up one Space when mounted on the arms. Most weapons, handheld or integrated into the machine, have a Space requirement (handheld weapons technically don't fill those Spaces, just require them), but Hands (and pincers and claws) only take one. Large Shields are far and away the best, although they're extremely heavy and cost a lot of points. However, you saved a lot of points by being Pure and only needing one weaponry type, which is also reflected in your character's stats.
>>
>>46550835

Four if you count the Backup Sensor in the chest. Scavengers have a nasty reputation for ambushing recon units, which frequently have upgraded sensor cores and expensive equipment coupled with light armor and limited weaponry.
>>
>>46551114
So by the sounds of it, the thing has plenty of space and while it moves faster, no transformation means it can't double the speed. It's also the Mario in terms of weight categories. Not huge, but not paper either.

>>46551184
Yeah, from what I recall last thread, while hand to hand seems to have a limited capability compared to the other two groups, the extra space and the design for the magnetic grapple can help with that. We could go for simply armoring/powering the arms up, or making supports/multi layer shields, or maybe even multiple arms.
>>
>>46551325
>plenty of space and while it moves faster, no transformation means it can't double the speed
Just means we need to full ALL THE SPACE with ALL THE THRUSTERS. Flying faster means punching faster, right?
>>
>>46551380
technicaly yes though we are probably also going to need to fill some of that space with options.

Before your mech can be upgraded, it needs three things. A name, a new head, and a paintjob. You can vote now, along with talking about what sort of head design you want, but there's time to think about it before you have to make the final decision. Pic related are some standard Jovian head options, but any head design from any suit you or I post is a possible option. Heads are one of the best ways to make your mech stand out and be memorable. For the paint job, I'll have you cast your vote for a primary color, a secondary color, and optionally a third color, along with an eye color.

As for you, this is what you look like on paper.

Attractiveness: 8
Body Type: 8
Cool: 10 (Intimidation +1, Leadership +2, Oratory +1, Persuasion & Fast Talk +2, Streetwise +1
Empathy: 7 (Seduction +1)
Intelligence: 6 (Awareness +1)
[Education]: +4
Luck: 7
Movement Allowance: 7
Reflexes: 10 (Athletics +1, Dodge & Escape +5, Drive +1, Handgun +1, Hand-to-Hand +5, Mecha Fighting +8, Mecha Pilot +8, Zero G +1)
Technical Ability: 8 (Mecha Tech +5)

Most rolls are handled via a 1d10 roll plus your most applicable Stat and any applicable Skills. For instance, punching an enemy outside of your mech would use Reflexes + Hand-to-Hand +1d10, and he would use Reflexes + Dodge & Escape + 1d10 to try and avoid it.

>>
>>46551421
>>46551380
We've also got to take in consideration the sort of situations we are in. Thrusters are fine for initiating combat and getting in there, but we will need mobility, armor, and raw power once we get in close. Really, rather than beam weaponry, spikes or something like the Altstein's Revolver Stake could better serve us due to the momentum and penetration.
>>
>>46551498
i'm a fan of the visor head.

as for colors i think a black primary with a silver secondary would be cool as for the eye color i think i will vote for red.
>>
>>46551568

If I saw Ali al Saachez as a giant robot flying at me intent on close quarters combat I'd shit myself too, and as you can see >>46551528
sculpted faces are an available head design although it isn't normal for grunt units to be built with them.

The average human statistic is 6. As you may notice, Roarke is pretty strong. He isn't a Rookie, the standard sixteen-year-old protagonist, but a Professional built with enough experience to hack it as the personal enforcer and first mate of a pirate captain. Mostly, you're good at hand-to-hand combat, good enough to be considered an up-and-coming ace even if you're not a truly famous one yet, definitely the most skilled pilot in your crew. Taking on a leadership role will probably involve branching out from that specialty a little, and it's a good thing that this system uses a bizarre sort of exp progression where low-level skills improve more quickly than high-level ones. The fastest way to sum it up is that you improve skills by using them.
>>
>>46551498
I doubt that colors will have any mechanical effect, but even so I'd suggest black camouflage of the exact same shade as deep space, with white highlights and white eyes to confuse enemies.

For the head, can we just get a blank faceplate? Also, what are the odds we can get a modular radar sensor array of the exact same shape as a sombrero?
>>
>>46551528
Hmmmm.. I like the brave head because it makes me think GaoGaiGar, and damned if we are not going the Brave Super Robot route anyways.

Blacks, gray and red can work, but the eyes should be yellow.

As for the name.. Got Knuckle Kaiser, Strong Arm, Blitzkrieg, and a few more basic ones in my head. Fancy doesn't seem like our guys name, though a loud and bold name would.
>>

As you ride the liftwire down from the battered cockpit of your machine to the ground, you feel the reassuring weight of artificial gravity. It makes some people sick, but to you it feels almost like a good morning stretch. There are a lot of things you could do, but first and foremost is breakfast.

Outside of the hangar is the town of California Station Colony 1 itself. It's a surprisingly verdant place, with small gardens and walls of greenery everywhere. There are a lot more weeds in the poorer districts, but it's still equally as leafy. If you were outside the town, you would be seeing farms, ponds, some colonies even have lakes, and larger estates. Birds fly overhead as you walk down a tree-lined street of interlocking faux-adobe hexagons, past flower shops and bakeries. You've left your pilot suit behind for civilian clothes.

You see a child picking an adult's pocket and smile nostalgically. When you turned fifteen, the usual age to get a job, you decided that fuck working for Bucephalus or the UJCIDF and came out here to the asteroid belt in search of money and adventure. Naturally, you fell into a criminal gang. You were a shitty thief whose only real talent was beating people up, but by your eighteenth birthday you'd been recruited by the Iron Kestrels and were a pirate in earnest.

Thankfully, you know where to find a few decent diners, and before long you're seated at an old-fashioned booth with a steaming platter of flapjacks and french toast swimming in maple syrup, with plenty of cream and bits of real fruit. Your eyes tear up slightly at the first bite, after subsisting entirely on space food for weeks. As you tear into your meal like a starving wolf, guzzling down coffee, you mentally review where the old pirate hangouts in the poorer sections are, and which ones are still open.

OUR head is a sensor array. For the most part we are an exception to the rule. As for weaponry, well our range wouldn't be that good and those tend to be rather bulky to begin with. Really, I would say a flash bang thing that we are shielded against could work in messing up shots along with emp or other communication jammers. Hominh, targetting and the like are going to be our biggest banes. Nulling or dampening them can put us on a more even field.

Mechabeasts and mecha that transform into animals get a bite attack automatically. Beast Transformation prevents you from using your hands as weapons, or I would have mentioned it sooner.

Heads might be glorified sensor arrays and personalized crests, but they can still stock equipment the same as any other servo. Theoretically, you could stock any kind of weapon you wanted in one, including a crushing weapon such as a mouth.

However, it would take up Spaces commensurate with the power of the bite, unlike your hands.

It takes a lot of wandering around, and the first two bars you remember on Colony 1 have either closed or moved, but the third one is still open.

The streets here are cramped, with a lot of switchbacks and steep inclines as they meander along the valley between a low-income residential district and a major hospital, but the view is magnificent even if the paint tends to be worn here and small trees are worming their way up between the cobblestones in some places.

You're about two blocks from the neon emerald sign advertising the Winking Sun bar when a glint of metal and the clamor of upraised voices catches your eye. In a small courtyard, with his back to a nonfunctional public fountain, is a straight-backed elderly gentleman with black, silver-streaked hair holding a briefcase in one hand and a straight walking cane in the other. Two scruffy young men are gesturing at the suitcase, and one of them is brandishing a large bowie knife.

What will you do, space warrior?

>Help him

If you choose to help either side, explain how. You have your fists, as always, plus a hand cannon that you carry as part of your job as First Mate, and all of your social skills.

I didn't list animal-shaped heads as a possibility for a reason. This setting is a bit more Real Robot than that, any "beasts" are fairly abstract, in the same way that a Big Dog robot doesn't look much like a real rottweiler.

Those two are thugs, with nothing to offer us. Even if this guy is important these two are doing it at someone else's behest. Plus I'd like to think for all our pirate ways we respect the elderly. Approach them from behind and pistol whip mr. knife in the back of the neck. It's just a knife. Any weapon the enemy relies on is a weapon you can take away, and besides, you have a gun. Rather than bother being stealthy, you simply walk up to them from the front, casually hooking your thumbs into your belt to expose the butt of your gun, and speak your first words in this story.

"What's all this, then?"

The elderly gentleman whips around with concern on his face, twisting the top of his cane and baring a few inches of steel. You suppose the cane sword is why he wasn't giving the thugs what he wanted, but he closes it again when he notices the thugs seem as confused by your appearance as he was.

"Who the fuck are you, his bodyguard?" Says the one with the knife, getting more bold as you walk into stabbing range without pulling out your gun. "Piss off, you piece of shit, this is our fucking turf a-"

He shouldn't have talked so much. You draw your arm across your body and the gun from its sheath in a single, smooth motion. You don't like using firearms, it's too hard to put a shot exactly where you want it, but they have their uses. He obviously thinks that you're trying to line up a shot on him and have fucked it up by coming too close, because he dodges TOWARDS you, head down and knife flashing out.

Sadly for him, you're faster, and you aren't aiming to do anything as complicated as take aim and shoot. The metallic butt of your pistol strikes him squarely on the side of the temple, and he goes nearly horizontal as he flies away to sprawl across the ground in an unconscious heap. The knife clatters from his fingers. The other thug, practically still a kid, looks up at you in terror. He takes one shuffling step back, then another. His eyes dart towards the knife, and you take a step forward to discourage him from thinking about going for it.

He chooses the better part of valor and runs away as fast as he can. Meanwhile, the middle-aged gentleman dusts off his briefcase and adjusts his long, black coat

"Thank you, youngster. You might have saved those young men from spilling any of their blood." He looks down at the unconscious thug several feet away, whose nose and lips are clearly busted and bleeding from hitting the ground so hard, "...Any more of their blood." Before you can get annoyed at him, he smiles to show that he's joking, and takes a seat on the edge of the fountain with a sigh.

"This is troublesome, I was just here to visit the hospital and buy some souvenirs and was hoping to keep a low profile, but I owe you my name." He touches his right eyebrow with the point of his cane in a cavalier salute, "Colonel Ziemowit Stern, UJCIDF. Have you ever thought about a career in the military, son? With reflexes like that, you could make an excellent pilot someday."

Oh shit, it might be a bad idea to tell him that you're a pirate or what you're doing here. What do?
>>
>>46554461
>"I don't think the military life would quite fit me, sir, but thank you for the sentiment."
>Make small talk, preferably without disclosing anything, until we can part ways from him.
>>
>>46554461
Best to keep calm about it, but aloof. Reason we decided to help was because the punks were being disrespectful and cowardly, which doesn't really work for us.

If he asks what our profession is, simply say Freelancer. It is what we are right now until we find our buddies or work.
>>
>>46554461
Ask if he want's to grab a drink and see if the alcohol loosens his lips at all. This guy probably knows stuff.
>>
>>46554461
Make ourselves look like a reckless blood thirsty brawler to dissuade him from wanting us
>>
>>46554653
Yeah, nah. That will end badly considering he's military. We don't want him to pay attention to us because he sees us as a threat to the peace.
>>
>>46554684
Not enough to be considered a threat but enough to be seen as too reckless to follow orders
>>
>>46554461
"I'd hope I'm an excellent pilot right now, or at least good enough to enough to limp back home after all's said and done. You seem an experienced sort, especially with such a notable rank in such far reaches, for the UJCIDF at least. Care for a drink? Can't say I'm decent company, but I try to be." See if we can see what's what, or at least have some good conversation.
>>
>>46554653
I don't think he can enlist us without our consent, which is why he's asking us.

On the other hand, we could say something like:
>I grew up in the poorer part of town. I've done some things the military might not look too kindly on to get by, and please don't ask me any more than that.
which carries enough implications that he ought not to want us, but is still vague enough that we haven't implicated ourselves.

It carries the bonus of seeming level-headed to him, which may allow us to continue the conversation and get more information from him, and allowing us to gauge him as a person by his response.
>>
>>46548855
Is this a fanfic quest or an original setting?
>>
>>46554746
Original, but definitely Gundam-influenced
>>
>>46554710
that will still cause a problem because we would look like a person who would cause problems. If we want to look unemployable, go aloof, not reckless. All the same reasons for not employing us without looking like a suspicious/dangerous person.
>>
>>46554713
Also I take it from the stations description that its neutral enough we can be amiable with someone if their not set on violence even if we're on opposite ends. Besides he seems to know how things are, especially if he's roughly based on the character. He'd probably toast to a future fight than kill us in cold blood. Maybe if we're hard for cash he's even be willing to hire out a little clandestine work for the UJCIDF.
>>
>>46554461
Crazy idea, we join the military and spend years working through the ranks and they put money directly into our bank accounts until we retire in 40 years.

Seriously though joining up at least temporarily would be a good way to get some key knowledge and maybe run off with an experimental mech.
>>
>>46554746
Original setting
>>
>>46554798
You can't just join up and get assigned to an experimental mech, you gotta achieve Char Aznable levels of fame to do that. And that'd take years to do.

And it ain't like we'll fall into the cockpit. We're a professional, not a 16-year old.

We probably have some remaining loyalty to our gang, and will likely have to go through some background checks to get enlisted.

>>46554798

>>
>>46554845
Don't need to get assigned to it just gotta grease a few palms to see any cool military tools so we can aspire to them and then make off like a thief in the night.

"I was raised to respect my elders, sir, and frankly I didn't like their attitude. His father should have struck him before I had to." You shrug, and the Colonel laughs. Now that you know it's there, you can see the outline of a sharply pressed purple and white United Jovian Colonies Independent Defense Force uniform under his coat, complete with gold epaulets.

"Children these days don't have parents who remember the war years, back when there were evacuation and gas mask drills, back when entire colonies were being purged to stop the green plague from spreading." He sighs heavily, the lines on his face growing deeper, "Mankind was a hard species back then, and hardest of all on our own children, the Green Men and their creations. I worry sometimes that it's not possible for us to become soft again, and that we'll become simply brittle if we try. You have the air of someone who knows the battlefield, I've seen that look on too many soldiers' faces when they get used to seeing friends die. You weren't in the service yourself, were you? You look a little young for a veteran leaving without reason..." His voice trails off, asking the question by omission.

"Not military, sir, freelance mercenary work. I know my way around a machine, or at least good enough to enough to limp back home after all's said and done. You seem an experienced sort, especially with such a notable rank in such far reaches, for the UJCIDF at least. Care for a drink? Can't say I'm decent company, but I try to be." You respond, mostly for the sake of politeness. His short, neatly trimmed beard and general age remind you a little bit of Captain Ozark, but Ozark has been an irreverent drunk with a foul mouth for as long as you've known him, while this old fellow is quiet and polite.

He holds up his hand, palm-out, in polite refusal, "I'm not so naive that I don't know what sort of pilots frequent bars on California Station, especially in this part of the town."

He gives you just the faintest sidelong look and you could almost swear the 'l' was blurred somewhere towards an 'r' when he said 'pilots'. He might be hinting at something. Fortunately, you're a brick wall of cool and wearing your shades, so the innocent look you give him is quite foolproof.

Seemingly satisfied, he continues with what he was saying. "I couldn't be at ease, drinking while surrounded by men and women whose friends I might have slaughtered. It would be painful for both them and myself, so I would rather avoid it. I prefer more select company, and...ah...of course..." He picks up his briefcase. It's a huge, heavy thing, almost more of an armored carpetbag, and he has to tap in a code to open it. From inside, he pulls out a folded, hinged piece of wood, a bag, and a miniaturized active cooler just large enough to hold a six-pack of humanity's oldest friend. Still sitting on the edge of the fountain, he unfolds the board to reveal a checked red and black board, and opens the bag to pour out a selection of red and black roundels, "Do you have time for a game?"

"Everyone knows how to play checkers. Toddlers can figure out how to play checkers. It's one of the most primal strategy games there is. It's simple, instinctual, pure. Chess, go, shogi, these all model the war...but only checkers models the battlefield. For the field commander whose concerns are the immediate lives of everyone around him, I find checkers to be the ideal game to study." He explains.

"Certainly, I hope you're not disappointed. I can't promise to be very good at it." You explain as he sets the pieces up, with him as red and you as black. He shrugs, pops open the cooler, and offers you an ice-cold beer. It's in a glass bottle, too, none of the space-compatible 'juiceboxes' or cheap metal cans you're used to.

At long last, after losing the last few games, he puts the board away, stands up, and stretches. "Thank you for that, son. It was a pleasure." His beer was, by the way, an excellent local, and you suspect it might have been one of the souvenirs he was talking about. The six-pack is gone by the time you're done, and as he stands up you ask one final question that's been niggling at you.

"Why do you have a sword in your cane?"

He looks momentarily bemused, then laughs deep in his throat, "Military regulations frown upon the discharge of firearms aboard a ship, it's common for officers to carry swords. Besides, I don't get around as well anymore as I used to, and the shape makes enemies mistake a weapon for weakness." You notice that his left leg below the knee is a metal prosthetic. A convincing one, sure, but your brother Cassius has two of them and you recognize the movement. War is hell sometimes. After a few more pleasantries, he departs. You watch him go, and then turn your attention back to the bar.

It's a quiet, dimly lit place. No music on the radio, just a riptide of quiet conversation. It's likely for the best that the Colonel didn't come in here, a few of these guys are openly wearing pirate colors.

You've got three in you already, but you order another beer and start pondering your next move. Along with the whole affair with the Colonel. Although he looked slightly Asiatic, you could swear that Ziemowit Stern is some kind of ancient European name, if Ziemowit is even a real name at all. You spot a Bluegill Joe machine in the corner and are tempted to spend a few creds playing the belt's most popular simgame series, when you hear a snatch of conversation from one of the booths,

"...I swear, I saw a guy with orange hair earlier and I thought I was going to cry."

It's funny how sometimes a sentence can reach you across the room. Looking over, you see an unusual sight, a very small woman and a very large man, crammed into a booth in the back, wearing sunglasses. It's unusual because they're not fighting.

Miles Longshadow...which you strongly suspect is a fake name, and which everyone only found out was short for 'Milesia' when she started growing breasts, joined the Kestrels before you did but at a younger age. She's not a traditionally pretty girl, her nose has a pronounced sort of point to it, her eyes are small and narrow, her hair is matte black and generally cut in a fairly short mop, and her face is almost completely covered in freckles. Of your old squad, she was the one who had been with you the longest. Right now she's looking into the eyes of the huge, hulking man who just spoke, patting his hand, "Dude's dead, Rick. All three of them are, and the Captain is..."

"Don't say it! I don't wanna hear it again! I'm telling you, you should've let me go back!"

Richard Thorslund, by contrast, is a huge, hulking bear of a man. He's always struck you as looking like precisely the sort of human being that would have existed a few millenia ago, when men wore furs and fought with axes. He has a huge, squarish face with stern lines so deep they could have been cut with a chisel and a massive, braided beard.

You won't trick Miles into painting your Harpy for you ever twice. She spent hours on it the first time, right after you got your new Harpy Customs and you switched the nameplates on the hangars, and when she found out what you'd done she went into a berserk rage and nearly broke down the locked door of your cabin with only a paint roller and her fingernails. After that incident, she customized her Harpy so much it couldn't be mistaken for anyone else's ever again.

What I was actually referencing was Tom Sawyer showing up to his own funeral after he was presumed dead and hiding so he could hear all the nice things people were saying about him.

You take a circumspect route towards their booth, taking the long way around the central bar. You're pleased to see that, like you, they aren't wearing the black leather jackets with the white hawk emblem on the back that identifies them as members of the Iron Kestrels. As you get closer, you pull out your harmonica, and weave a sultry little riff on it.

Miles' head pops up, then she drops her face into her hands, voice breaking a little, "Damn it, Rick. I...I'm still hearing his fucking music. I swear, if he was here right now, I'd never say a mean thing to him again. He was...he was like the big brother I...I always wished I..."

"Mia...babe, no...it's gonna be okay, don't cry." Babe? This is new and juicy. You'll never be able to stop giving them shit for this. The big guy puts his arms around her, and she nearly vanishes. As he does, he looks up, sees you, and freezes. Miles doesn't notice anything wrong at first, and keeps going.

"What are we going to do? Neither of us is cut out to be Captain. You know it, and so do I. Is this just it, then? Do we just leave? Pack up and go home? I don't have a fucking home to go back TO, Rick, what am I supposed to..Rick? Richard, are you listening to me?" As she speaks, her voice gets more and more angry, and by the end it's the same old angry-pitbull-crossed-with-a-chainsaw growl you know.

"Miles, do you believe in ghosts?"

"No I fucking don't believe in ghosts, you idiot. Why are you talking about that? Are you spacing out again?"

"Don't turn around, then. He's right behind you and looking more smug than a fox with a chicken suit. Unless I'm hallucinating"

[Continued]
>>
She turns around, and her jaw drops open. Confirmation of his sanity is all Richard needs, and with a huge roar he jumps to his feet and throws his arms around you like the bear he so resembles, nearly crushing you in his grip. "DUDE!" He bellows, nearly lifting you off your feet, and moments later you're nearly yanked to the ground in the other direction as Miles jumps into the air to get her arms around your neck and hug you from the other side.

After a few minutes, you're able to breathe again, let alone talk...that hug nearly shoved your harmonica down your throat because you'd been trying to play more and more loudly until they heard you. They sit you down in the booth and bombard you with questions.

"You're alive! You're really here, man! Roarke Starwind, you bastard, how could you let me think you were dead!?" Miles punches you in the arm, it stings a little. "You're such a fucking prick for pulling a stunt like that, why couldn't you just be a normal person for once instead of a giant fucking showoff!?" You think this means she's happy to see you.

"Dude, you're really alive..." The crags of Richard's face bend into something resembling a smile, "We thought you were gone when that...thing...the big one with two horns...dropped more rockets than I've ever seen into your airspace."

Come to think of it, you do vaguely remember that it was one of the big ones, not a Harpy, that shredded Louis and Thelma and the left half of your Harpy. Honestly, if they hadn't been between you and most of the salvo, you might have really died. You'll remember that oni facemask and its vivid green paintjob for later.

A few minutes of conversation reveal the grim truth of the Iron Kestrels' situation. Twenty four pirates with enough piloting skill to be trusted with a Harpy remain, a little over half of what your strength was before, and the Rhinehawk was damaged and had to retreat. They hede around the Captain's situation, but you gather it's not good.

[Continued]

Apparently, the Rhinehawk is in the docking bays of Colony 3. The two of them took a personnel shuttle here because they didn't like the more ritzy establishments over there and Miles likes this bar's beer better. Secretly, you've always quietly suspected her of being a farmgirl originally despite her absolute and adamant refusal to talk about her past. Richard's backstory is less of a mystery, he's from a mining family and grew up here.

Although the personnel shuttle can't carry your nameless mech, the two of them encourage you to hop in your machine and fly over to Colony 3 immediately, it's important that the crew knows there's an officer still alive. They plan to take the shuttle and get back before you do to tell everyone.

Are there any further questions you have for them? Anything you want to do or discuss?

It's actually a very sad story. She was an early attempt at randomly rolling a backstory.

Red Siren, originally Rosita Kim, was a popular Jovian idol singer who was famous for incorporating her skill as a mecha pilot into her act. Her Eilonwy was designed to be a speaker system and lightshow projector as well as a graceful and stunning-looking aerobatic dancer, and she put on magnificent shows with it. She was sponsored by Bahamutcorp, who made her mecha and acted as her agent.

Unfortunately, spoiled idols used to getting their own way, and sometimes it goes to their heads. She had an affair with her mech designer, an up-and-coming young Bahamutcorp developer who had a bright future ahead of him and was even married to an executive's daughter. The wife found out, however, publicly confronted her, and stabbed Rosita in the eye with her hairpin before throwing herself off a balcony at a high-class party in front of hundreds of people. It ruined the designer's career, and he sunk into depression and eventually took his own life too. She was left alone, and Bahamutcorp dropped her like a sack of wet dog shit over the scandal and her now-missing eye. It was less for the affair, and more because they thought the public wouldn't want to see a scarred songstress.

Out of a sense of pure, dramatic, stubborn vengefulness she stole her Eilonwy, rode off to the asteroid belt, used her savings to pump it full of thrusters and weaponry, renamed it the Archen, and started a crew on the power of sheer charisma and viciousness.

The money from her occasional but highly flashy acts of piracy keeps her and her crew comfortable, but the real cash flow is the videos she makes of her raids and the music she continues to put out and sell on the black market, profiting off her notoriety. Every time the news reports on her she sells more albums.
>>
>>46558018
Lets talk about what happened to the rest of the crew and whats been going on since we've been gone
>>
>>46558018

>>
>>46558022

The mechanics for that exist, although keep in mind that you survived in a much more fragile mech with a much smaller shield than the one you're currently piloting, so you're not all that fucked against missile spam.

The survivors all fled after the battle became unwinnable. The Green Skulls had the advantageous position and at least double your numbers. They stayed together, protected the Rhinehawk, and made their way back to California Station, arriving a few days before you did. As for the plan? There wasn't one. The Captain is incapacitated and...you infer more from the silences than what they actually say...dying. Apparently his Master Harpy was the first thing the Green Skulls came after, and although he shot down plenty of lesser Harpies they wore him down and tore his mech apart.

How long does he have, and how much money do we need to get him treatment?
>>
>>46558207
Can we use his parts to make us a stronger leader?
>>
>>46558103
That's good to know. But I thinking since our ability to evade attacks will be hampered by our larger mecha going for a tankyer route might be a good idea.
>>
By the way, since we're winding down to a stopping point for tonight and picking up tomorrow, did anyone happen to notice what, if any, the general trend was regarding opinion on head types, eye color, and paintjobs for your mech once it's repaired?
>>
>>46558214
I hope that, by that, you're asking if we can rebuild him. Better. Stronger. Faster.
>>
>>46558207

Neither of them is sure, neither of them has medical training. It's a miracle he's survived this long, they say...but this is definitely the end for him, he's not getting better. He's not in an anime coma or suspended animation, he's dying, and all they've managed to do is make him more comfortable. That's part of the reason why they've all been waiting around here.
>>
>>46558207
A better question would be can we turn him into an Einborg?

No real consensus on eye color, as far as I saw.
Paintjob seemed to be black primary, with no consensus on secondary.
Head types didn't really have a consensus either, except for that bit toward the end about having a mask with a mouth beneath.

Probably want to call a revote next thread.

Just to clarify, though, a fanged grin is totally doable. If you want it to move, though, you either need to be tremendously hotblooded or able to convince your mechanic to spend hours tuning moving parts that don't yet serve a practical purpose. Thankfully, Fast Talk & Persuasion is a Cool skill, and you have the maximum Cool value possible.
>>
I'm curious whether people talking about combining the brave head with the sensor mask head and a fanged grin meant something like this, or if I'm just not getting it. You could always shape the mask like your sunglasses, too.
