>Thread died out, apparently!

Waking up in the morning, you groaned. There were many, many things you liked waking up to in the morning, and today had none of them.

No coffee.

No booze.

No hot women.

No good news.

Instead, you had a prepubescent girl sleeping in a ball on your chest, a searing backache, numb hands, and the dull feeling in your mouth that told you you desperately needed fluids.

“Joan…” you muttered, scrabling around on your nightstand for a Nalgene. “Joan, get up…”

“Non.” The sleeping girl replied.

“Joan. Get up.” You said, trying to unscrew the canteen one-handed. “I need a drink.”

“Non.”

Drinking very carefully, you lifted her off your chest and sit her on the bed. Sitting up, you grumbled quietly as you looked for your pants. After acquiring said pants, you stretched out, trying to work the kinks out. Halfway through this, you felt a small pair of arms around your back, pulling you down to the bed.

“Non.”

You had to roll your eyes now, walking out of your bedroom. Joan flopped behind you, muttering at you. “Non. Non. Non. Non. Non.” It was quite the skill to ignore her. Going to the galley, you looked at the duty cook and blinked.

“Sorry sir, no coffee yet.”

“Sorry sir, no coffee yet.”

Goddamnit. Looks like breakfast was going to be…. Green beans and a chunk of… fish? You were fairly sure that was fish. Going to the table, you ate it, groaning. On today’s to-do list, there were a LOT of things. Firstus was finding where you were so you could start looking around for either a major shipping lane to loot ships from or a fairly small island or atoll to dump people on. Secondus was talking to Captain Jasper and Carmine about things, along with setting up the beginnings of a machinery shop on the Carolina for tools and weapons. Thirds was Joan. Fourth was getting the crew of the Arroschere rotated so there were some Apprentice sailors and warriors onboard, and senior crew on the Carolina to teach them things. Oh joy.

>Find where you are

As you get slowly piped onto the Carolina, you wince at the smell. The ship must be flooded with refugees that had been picked up, and you could smell the wash of humanity. From the foredeck, you saw spurts of water coming off the side, making you look at the waste carefully. As you reached the top, you looked at the ensign there, distinguished by his youth and hat.

“Kid,” you ask, frowning. “what the hell is up with the bow?”

“That’s the wash station, commodore. Some of the guys, well, made a sort of a wash station from a container full of bathtubs. There’s also a bunch of water-trough heads there, too…”

You nodded distractedly. “Good on them, then. Take me up to the Acting Captain, please.”

“Yes Sir!”

*

Ten minutes later you were on the bridge, looking Carmine in the eyes and wishing to God she didn’t have two inches on you, easy. In all seriousness, she was an Amazon! Shaking your head to clear out your thoughts, you got ready to talk to her.

“Acting Captain Carmina.”

“Commodore Asieta.”

>Fellowship Check: PASS
>Command Check: PASS

“Thank you for coming aboard, Commodore. We’ve had a little trouble with disease lately, but overall the Carolina is still fit for duty.”

“Good to hear. I believe earlier you mentioned you had a fogy idea of where we were?”

At this, Carmine blushed almost imperceptibly behind her tan. “Yes. We found out our latitude, and cross-checked a map. Right now, our closest landfall is a small island near San Cristobal. We’re currently in the Solomon Islands based on this information.”

You scrunched up your eyebrows. “And how did you figure out the island was there?”

“We spotted the ship after it ran aground. The island isn’t huge, and we think that we could use the wrecked boat as a supply depot and base while we build a fort there.”

On one hand, you agreed with this. You needed a settlement for agriculture, and on the atlas that had been found with the ship said island was referred to as Uki Ni Massa Island, with a population of about twelve hundred. You knew from lifeboat clearing that the flu symptoms before the zombiesm kicked in usually killed one in six, and competitive feeding when there was no available food source meant that zombie populations generally had a definite half-life.

The problem was that you were looking at thick jungle, not some nobody no-where flatland. There would be abundant food, and abundant predators. Your people would be conducting slash-and-burn farming, flailing at the jungle while praying they could grow enough food. They would be dead weight on your logistics, a yoke that burdens until they were self-sufficient. Once that point was reached, they would still tear at your resources, consuming everything they could to keep growing.

We need materials for making rigging, or getting something to use as fuel for the ships. Current model of life is unsustainable.
>>
>>46509669

Alright, you lost me at "fuel for ships". These are modern ships, which means diesel engines. Therefore, you're talking biofuel production, and you're going to need to explain some of it to me.
>>
>>46509588
>Yes shore colony on Uki Ni Massa (pre-Apocolypse pop 1,200)
Maybe find an islet to put the settlers 1st?
>>
>>46509759

Uki Ni Massa is the comfertable islet, unfortunately. Once you're done there, you have a hold on the Solomon Islands, and can probably expand to the Bismarck Archipelago.
>>
>>46509753
I will admit I'm no expert at this subject either. From what I'm able to gather, you need a sugar-rich crop to churn with lye and methanol in some sort of process. Fuck, there's gotta be one person in a thousand who understands chemistry.
>>
>>46509877
Alternatively we could alter our engines to work on wood gas, or outright replace them with steam engines.
>>
File: Ziggsies..jpg (80 KB, 1280x720)
80 KB
80 KB JPG
>>46509877

The catch isn't understanding chemistry, though. It's finding someone who can chemistry in a tube showing a guy who can chemistry a bucket who can chemistry a bathtub who can chemistry a vat.

Which isn't much until you look at the support structure, at which point OH SHIT.

>>46509935

The problem is that converting wood gas only works well with gasoline-fired engines, and comercial marine engines use diesel. As for all-out replacement, by the time you can build a steam engine I would expect them to be going into new hulls, like warships.
>>
>>46509996
So... what you are saying is that either we get a modern tech base up and running; create fuel, parts and all that shit, OR we have to go back to either steam or even sail ships in the near future. As i doubt our ships have that much more fuel stored away.
>>
>>46510063

It's a question of salvage, and more importantly UNREP. Salvage is anything not nailed down. UNREP, Underway Replenishment, is basically the naval version of siphoning gas out of someone else's car with a rubber hose.

And it WILL come up. The question is, can you pull it off with only one point in seamanship?

I give you three videos on how it's produced in a series. Essentially, this >>46509877
anon says is mostly right, you need a sugar rich crop, but the problem is breaking down the complex sugars (Cellulose and the like) down to simple sugars (Glucose and Fructose, both present in high amounts in fruit and sugar cane) to then be broken from their glucose ring structures to linearity and then from there broken down from glucose to ethanol. really, if you have brewers yeast and enough time, you can just mass produce rum and then distill it to 100% ethyl alcohol and burn that as fuel.
>>
>>46510155
well, we would need a flexible and watertight hose, and a way to make suction. We could always siphon out the depot ship once fuel runs low, there's no way oars are moving that tub.
>>
>>46510158

the main problem with this specific method is that it takes a LONG time to create enough, then distill it over and over again till you have totally drained the water away.
>>
>>46510158

Welp, that's a thing. It's also a good thing- you can use it for a lot of fuel requirments, including Zodiacs and other Light Craft. The problem is that there's the pesky diesel-gasoline difference. If you could add some longer ethel chains, then that mix would work fairly well.
>>
>>46510252

Pretty much, and you're not wrong. I just went on auto pilot for the second and started thinking in terms of ethanol and not diesel, similar but different enough chem comp that you cant really convert between the two, but I believe if you use corn or some other grain crop you can produce bio diesel from that.
>>
>>46510243
that, and it means diverting arable farmland away from producing food. Our colony is going to have to work its ass off just to survive in the near future, let alone supplying us with fuel.
>>
>>46510300

yeah I was gonna say that, you're gonna need something that either produces a lot quickly, like sugar cane or sugar beets, or use some that's gonna take some chemical and physical treatment before it can be used, like corns and grains. Regardless, it's still going to take a lot of space.

>>
>>46510329

The good news is though, that if we use plant based bio fuels, we can use some of the byproduct as feed for animals (or people if desperate enough)
>>
>>46510397

Animals. You have fishing as a fairly good means of getting some food, and farming aside. The follow-up question is where to get or domesticate animals.
>>
>>46510496

Teach dolphins to act as cattle of course! but no really, um with a population of 1200 the island would most likely have at least chickens and goats brought in. Regardless that's later not now. Now we focus on three things, get these people off the boats and onto dry land, secure some shelter for them and secure food for them. Water is easy enough to still with solar stills and home built charcoal/sand water filters.
>>
>>46510603

The problem is that those are perfect zombie food. Although, I would love to see tamed dolphins. Maybe that can be an Ability, point buy 45...

There was really one option here. Your little squadron was a resource sink, and you were playing a zero-sum game with the time you had. Each day was food and fuel you couldn’t take back, and things were going to get dicey on both fronts soon.

“We’re stuck between a rock and a hard place, here.” You said, frowning. “On one hand, that island is going to be absoluty covered in hostile zombies. Assuming things go as normal, call it an even thousand zombies on the island. There would be plenty of food and water, so they wouldn’t need to hunt each other for food. There would be predators, but I doubt they could drastically knock down the population of zombies. So, an even thousand heads of zed. We don’t need to kill them, but we do need to be in a position to hold them off while we evac if it comes to a siege. That crashed ship isn’t going to be very stable, and it would be almost totally uninhabitable. I presume it’s a cruise ship?”

“Passenger liner, fairly spartan. Not much we can loot from it.”

“Good. The only thing it’s worth is scrap metal. You’re going to have to include it inside the defencive lines anyway, so that’s that. There’s no good harbors, so you’re going to be landing into a beach. I’m detailing the Carolina to anchor here until you get a fort built, because I want nobody staying on that island after dark until you have some good fortifications up. Once you get that fort built, well, good luck.”

“Wait a minute- me? Build a fort, run a colony? No fucking way!”

You grin, devilishly. “Yep. Congratulations, you passed the competency test. Find a pleb who can draw up architectural plans, get him to design a triangle fort with enough room for three hundred heads. You can have ten Engineers native to the Carolina, and fifteen Warriors. After that, plebs. When you need to motivate them, mention the fact that the Carolina leaves in a month, and if they aren’t finished then oh well. The growing season is all the time here, make sure you have good drainage in case of a typhoon, and good fucking luck.”

Leaving, you listened to Carmine gibber, then transition straight into Angry Marine Matriarch, bar none. It was rather refreshing, as you walked away from the wall of FUCK YOU COCKSUCKERS GET ME THE PAPERWORK AND PLEBIANS! It really was.

Heading back to the Arroschere, you yawned distractedly, and smiled. It was shaping up to be a good day-

“Sirnath! Sirnath, nous devons y aller! J'ai trouvé ma sœur!”

And here was Joan. Hoo boy. She was particularly insistant today, bodily dragging you towards the Comm Shack.

“Joan, slow down!” you said, digging in your heels. As you stopped, she looked at you. Your eyes connected, and you remembered something. She could kill zombies by stopping their heart through this same gaze.

You had a sudden moment of sympathy for the zombies.

“J'ai. Trouvé. Ma. Sœur!”

Well, looks like you were going to the comm shack! Inside, Joan flew into a frenzy, speaking faster than you could discern, pointing at things.

“Radioman,” you asked quietly, “is that a live contact she’s talking about?”

“Erm… more ghost than contact. It’s something, but I’m not sure what.”

Quietly leaving Joan in the signals room, you snuck up to the bridge. The only things you bothered to remember was that the signal was at heading 165, and the area had some light chop. “Hey, man,” the pleb said, schmoozing up to him. “What did you do to get that hot chick that waits on you?”

The warrior turned very slowly towards the plebeian, and focused.

“Why, exactly, are you asking?”

“C’mon, dude! You gotta share this kind of shit! Bros before hoes, and all that! You can’t tell someone how not to get at the pussy and booze and whatever else they have on this piece of shit!”

You were fairly sure the Warrior was thinking of how much trouble he would be if he smeared this moron over a bulkhead. The answer was none, but he didn’t know that.

“First, she’s not a hoe-“

“Bullshit! Ain’t never see her do any work ‘cept lounge around you old-timers! How is she not putting out?”

“Because she doesn’t want to.”

You were fairly certain that Mr. Wanna-be-a-gangster was gasping in shock.

“For God’s sakes, why! Hell, you probably don’t even need to ask-“

Well, this had been quite pleasant, but you felt that this could be useful for a number of reasons, one of which was setting a pleasant perscedent. Turning the corner, you raised an eyebrow at the Warrior holding the pleb up to the wall by the throat.

“Warrior. Stand down.” You intoned softly, watching him carefully. He slowly let the gangster down, but snarled at him when he attempted to move away. “Your name, son?”

“Emden, sir.”

“Very good, Emden. Now, as I did not here your entire conversation, did this plebeian inquire to the feasibility of preforming rape?”

“Buncha half-baked LIES-“

After Emden kicked him in the gut, you smiled. “He did, sir. I was in the middle of dissuading him from that path when you entered.”

“While I applaud your dedication to the codes of honor among this squadron, next time please take him to the fordeck for purposes of discipline in the future. However, there is a very clear punishment for this sort of event.”

“This man here is to be put on the bowsprit watch until such time he is needed, the post is needed, or two days have passed. Take him to the bowsprit and gather the rest of the Warriors to mount him.”

As Emden took him away, you took a second to ask him a question.

“Emden, what is the name of the young woman being discussed?”

“Alicia, sir. She came for me because I helped her off the liferaft, and with her nightmares.”

“Very good. Please inform her she is now considered a Warrior as well. You all need support staff, and I would rather your aides be official rather than grifters which could be thrown off.”

Back in the signal room, you got ready to cart off the sleeping Joan. Before you got to leave, however, Signalman stopped you.

“Sir. The contacts have solidified.”

Waitaminute. “Contacts, plural?”

“Yes sir. Three of ‘em. One’s looking like a small yacht, ‘bout our size, one’s a trawler like what the Warriors say the old boat was, one’s something I’ve never seen before. The little lady can’t tell us which one her sis is on, though.”

“Her sister?”

“Grew up in Sault ste. Marie, sir. Can garble my way through some Quebequais, but the little miss here speaks something so far from that it’s like comparing American English to Indian English as spoken by some drunk fucker who emigrated from the part they don’t have call centers in.”

Ouch. You visably winced.

“That was what it felt like making sense of her, sir. No disrespect, but I can’t translate for her. We’re gonna have to pick a contact, though- all three are drifting apart.”

(This was implamented to give anon a decent clue what he was going to find. The only other diffrence is that lifeboats are a seprate passive from the rest of the passives. Someone actively talking on channel 16 would be treated diffrently.)

That's what I'm trying to figure out. All the passive alarms you have to press initially. The MF/HF bands, the Sat-C(if that's even still working), the VHF auto alarm, they all have Big Red Button triggers a crewman has to hit. They'll stay broadcasting until someone turns them off, though.

About the only passive I can think of is the BNWAS, but I think that stops at ringing the general alarm if it doesn't detect activity on the bridge for a certain time period.

Although, if zombies are happening, it's probably easy enough to rig another level to the BNWAS to trigger a mayday broadcast. Maybe something on MF since nobody uses it anymore.

I'm going to be rather honest and say I hit the distress signal with the Rule of Mechanics First, Reality Second. Maybe somebody pushed a button, or a zombie smacked it by accident.

Unlikely. Remember, this is still a very recent zombie apocalypse. As in, it started a few weeks ago.

Fair enough.

We're running around the Caribbean, right? For the easy pickings?

Southeast Asia. Currently we're somewhere in the Solomons.

Oh. Well that makes things difficult, at least until we can teach someone to navigate. Or find one of these.
