===============

You are Prince Meirion auk Gwyrren, the only sane man in a royal family with dubious concepts of strategy, justice, taxation, and governance in general. You have made it your goal in life to keep your family on the throne and your head firmly attached to your body.

You invited your brother and his girlfriend to a masked ball so that you could meet her, but he refused. You still ended up going because hey, a party is a party. You had fun on the dance floor and might have sprained every muscle in your legs, and now you have some time to mingle.

Myrddin and his wife Nimue have spotted a few people of interest. The first is the daughter of the Count Caunys, who holds territory in the north near Olstren. You haven't heard much about the area lately, so it might be good to check up on things.

There's also a merchant named Coleran and his daughter. You're not familiar with them, but they seem to be important, or else Nimue wouldn't have mentioned them. You don't know how much longer you'll be here, so you need to make your time count.

"I should speak with Count Caunys' daughter," you say. "It's been a while since I've heard news from their territory."

"I haven't heard anything noteworthy, but it's always better to get first-hand information," Myrddin says. "This way."

As you walk, you recall what you know about Caunys. Seren auk Caunys is slightly older than you, and she's an accomplished alchemist. Thanks to the climate and soil of the north, her family is able to grow several plants and alchemical reagents which can't be found elsewhere. Their territory is just on the border, and it's been lost and taken back from Olstren several times.

Myrddin brings you and the rest of your party to a woman who's currently standing in a circle along with several other guests. Now that you can see her, you vaguely recognize. It's been several years since you've seen her, and the mask doesn't help, but you don't think Myrddin would be wrong.
"Trade with Olstren has been decreasing lately," Seren opines. "Their taxes are increasing, and their border patrols are almost violent."

"It's the same all across the border," someone else says. "At this rate, our coffers might take losses. I don't know if the king is going to do anything about this."

You frown in confusion. You haven't heard about problems with Olstren and judging by the look on his face, neither has Myrddin. This must be recent. You should learn more.

Myrddin, Olwen and Nimue hang back while you step approach the chatting guests.

"I'm afraid the situation will have become even worse by the time I get back," a man says. "Unfortunately, I had urgent business to take care of in Aurwain."

"I tried to prepare my vassals and their forces, but I'll risk starting a war if I mobilize too early," a woman says.

"We frontier lords simply don't have the clout to deal with this," another woman says.

You smoothly step into the circle of guests and ask, "What do you think the Crown should do about this?"

One of the men shakes his head. "I remember a few years ago when the king sent an army to Rosea because they were using slaves as miners," he says. "It started a small war, and for what? Foreigners? Why can't he raise an army for the sake of his own people?"

You remember that! It was one of the first messes you had to clean up. Good times. Good times indeed.

"Right, we need a demonstration of strength to force Olstren to toe the line," a woman says. "They shouldn't expect to provoke us like this and get away with it."

Seren shakes her head. "I'm afraid it won't be that simple," she says. "A show of strength might just make things worse unless it's enough to intimidate Olstren into submission. Our priority should be to normalize our relationship so trade can resume. That's the only thing that can ensure our prosperity."

>"If Olstren wants a war, we should give it to them."

"It's a bit too early to say," you say. "What's been happening at the border?"

"There have been additional patrols on the Olstren side during the last month or so," Seren says. "It was unusual, but it wasn't strange, so no one really paid much attention. However, just a week ago, I heard that Olstren was trying to completely close the border."

Closing the border between Gwyrddarfordir and anywhere else is nearly impossible. With Olstren, it is flat-out impossible. There are open plains that are impossible to block and forests that are impossible to monitor and absolutely nothing else there to separate the two countries.

"That is very strange," you say. "They might be preparing for war, but this would only make us suspicious and give us time to prepare. They'd be better off launching an attack immediately."

"Indeed," Seren says. "If anything, it's the uncertainty that's making everything worse. I was hoping to catch some rumours while I was here, but it seems I got here faster than the news. No one knows anything."

That is indeed a concern. It does take some time for news to travel from the border to Aurwain, and this doesn't sound like a priority yet. Fortunately, you heard about this before it could get worse. You might be able to deescalate the situation, if you think it's worth your time.

"If you're interested, I could arrange an appointment between you and people who are able to deal with this problem," you tell Seren. "That is, if you think you have the time."

"I can delay my departure of it's necessary," she says immediately. "I want to make sure this is dealt with."

"In that case, you can go to the palace tomorrow and tell the guards that you need to speak to someone concerning the northern matters," you say. "There shouldn't be any issues."

"Thank you for your advice, my lord," Seren says. She curtseys and you bow in return before leaving.

Once you're out of earshot, you ask Myrddin for his opinion on this.

"Olstren's movements aren't serious enough to be called an emergency yet, but it is concerning," Myrddin says. "It's probably a good thing that you took an interest in this situation before it developed."

"We'll see what Seren wants tomorrow and how much help we can give her," you say. "Tell the guards to let her through when she arrives."

"Of course, your highness," Myrddin says.

"Enough about your work," Olwen says. "Tell me, did you enjoy the evening, your highness?"

"It was quite a bit of fun," you say.

"I'll be sure to remember you said that the next time I feel like going out," Olwen says.

"You want feel like going out? I don't remember that ever happening."

Olwen rolls her eyes. "Just because it doesn't happen often doesn't mean it never happens," she says. "I do need to relax sometimes."

The evening ends and you return to the palace. You soak in the hot baths for some time to help your muscles relax and put you to sleep.

The next morning starts off with business as usual. Myrddin comes by with the daily reports, which you discuss with him and Olwen. After some time, a servant comes to inform you that Seren auk Caunys has arrived to discuss the matters of her family's land. You send for tea, and ask the guards to escort Seren to your room.

She's visibly surprised when she recognizes you.

"Greetings, your highness," she says. "I'm honoured that you would take the time to see me."

Seren sits down and you pour her a cup of tea.

"So, I heard there were some strange movements on the Olstren side of the border and that it's affecting trade in your family's territory," you say. "What kind of help are you looking for?"

"In truth, your highness, I'm not certain," Seren says. "I would prefer a peaceful solution that would restore trade to its usual levels as soon as possible, but I'm afraid no one knows what's happening on the Olstren side of the border. Without knowing even that much, it's difficult to think of a solution."

"Military exercises are the usual excuse in this kind of situation," Olwen says. "We can bring a few paladins and soldiers to the north and if Olstren raises a fuss, we can say the troops are there on legitimate business."

"That would work so long as Olstren doesn't react violently," you say. "Then again, if they do react violently, that would greatly simplify things."

"We could also pay an official visit to Olstren," Myrddin says. "They certainly won't be able to turn us away if we go in the Crown's name."

"I can't ask much of you, your highness," Seren says. "However, my family and I would be glad to host you if you would like to visit us."

>"We'll travel north with a small army, just in case."

"Thank you very much, your highness." Seren beams happily. "I'll make sure my father throws a feast on your honour!"

"Don't get too excited," you say. "I'll go and have a look at things, but I can't promise that I'll be able to solve the problem."

"Even so, I'm grateful for your efforts, your highness," Seren says.

"I'll gather a small groups of guards for the trip," Olwen says.

"And I'll let my contacts know we're coming," Myrddin says. "Speaking of, what are you going to tell your father?"

"Obviously, I'll lie about it," you say.

Olwen and Myrddin seem nonplussed about your declaration, but Seren seems thoroughly confused.

"You're going to lie to the king about where you're going?" She asks. "Why not just tell him the truth?"

"It's better this way," you say. "I can handle this myself. There's no need to get him involved."

Sure, you just told Seren that you might not be able to accomplish anything, but it's not like bringing your father into this would make things any better.

"You two can get everything ready," you say. "I'll go talk to his majesty."

Fortunately, it's a slow day at court, so you don't need to wait to see your father.

"Greetings, your majesty." You bow before the king, as is proper decorum.

"Meirion, you've been difficult to find lately," the king says. "Tell me, what can I do for you?"

"I just wanted to let you know that I'd be going on a trip north."

The king laughs boisterously at your announcement.

"Excellent!" He says. "You're young, so it's only right that you should go out on some adventures."

"No, no, this is just a leisure trip," you say. "I just want to travel a bit and see the country."

"That still counts as an adventure," the king says. "Go, and have some fun!" He laughs again.

You bow and take your leave of the king. That's one problem dealt with.

You retrieve your trust rapier Rhithcan, a blade of illusion and deception. Its attacks are impossible to predict and its shriek can disorient even the most experienced paladins, making it useful in all situations. You've won several fights because the sword caused your opponents to pass out and keel over. It isn't capable of mass destruction, but its illusory blades make coordination between multiple opponents nearly impossible.

You also pack some clothes, medicines, and food for traveling. You don't know how long you'll be gone, but it never hurts to be prepared.

The servants bring everything to the carriage which is waiting for you. Myrddin and Olwen are already there, along with Seren, who will be traveling with you.

"My entourage will come along in a day or two," she says. "I'm afraid they still have a few things to take care of in the capital."

"That's quite all right," you say. "There's more than enough space for four in the carriage."

"We'll be accompanied by a small mounted escort," Olwen says. "They're armed with both spears and muskets, so they'll be ready for anything."

"I'd prefer a quiet trip, to be honest," you say. "We'll have enough problems to deal with once we reach our destination."

You all get in the carriage and leave the city. As you pass through the gate, Seren asks you a question.

"If they have, we'll just have to deal with it," Olwen says.

"Once we arrive, we'll need to find out where Olstren is drawing its lines, how much force they're using, and which nobles are involved," Myrddin says. "We'll need your assistance as someone who's familiar with the area."

"It doesn't matter if this is big or small," you say. "So long as it poses a problem for the kingdom, I have to do something about it."
