/tg/ - Traditional Games

You are Lucie, chief shepherd of the Lanatae, and it is Late Summer in the Year 389. Long ago, your flock fled the great steppe of the west and settled in the heartland of the Empire. The Empire is either unwilling or unable to offer protection to your flock any longer, and marauding armies crash against its borders. Two years ago you led your flock from the imperial heartland and journeyed south, into the unexplored region beyond its borders. After a harsh trek through great forests, frozen mires, and tremendous mountains, your flock enters an enormous vale. It is surrounded on nearly all sides by sheer cliffs and mountains, possesses a large lake, and does not appear to be home to any dangerous monsters.

After convening with the other shepherds, it has been decided that this vale will be your new home, though there is still a great deal of work to be done. For now, your flock is encamped along the shore of the great lake, but these lodgings will not sustain you through winter, and the grazing lands here are covered in thick evergreens. There is also the serious problem of finding mates, as all Lanatae are female and must mate with a humanoid male in order to reproduce. Some of the imperial men, who had taken wives among the flock, have come with you, but most are now well past their prime. The last winter was especially hard on them, and unlike Lanatae they cannot subsist on grasses and forbs. They are, however, much stronger and more wary than nearly anyone in the flock. Lanatae are naturally frightful and timid, unsuited to battle, but these men are mostly former legionaries and have brought bows and swords with them. Of course you would rather that implements of that kind were unnecessary, but you're glad to have some protection all the same.

Settling in to a small tent erected on the edge of the water, you look out into the vale. Tall pines sway gently in the distance, along the water and beneath snowy peaks. A comfortable heat has settled in with the breeze, and most of the flock is grazing idly nearby. The men appear to be gathering brushwood for a fire.
As you wonder on where to start, you are reminded that you did not come entirely unprepared. The provincial governor had been on good terms with your flock and offered you some assistance before you departed. What was it again?

A. A great record of imperial history by the famed scholar Telemecus focusing on the Lanatae, which also includes some discussion and schematics of imperial technologies

B. Several sets of masterfully crafted steel tools, each including an axe, a pick, a shovel, and a hammer, along with a legionary field manual which has instructions on basic fortification and limited architecture

C. A magical talisman capable of minor alchemical changes, and locating items of subjective value up to a distance of 20km

D. A holy talisman of the imperial goddess Viride, patron of agriculture and fertility, which has several useful effects, ranging from predicting the weather to ensuring an untroubled pregnancy

In addition, he sent one of his retainers, a young, unmarried man along with you to serve as an advisor. The man, Lucius, is possessed of a special skillset. What was it?

1. Lucius was a hunter who served in the retinue of the provincial governor. He is an expert marksman, tracker, and scout.

2. Lucius was a legionary commander who fought on the frontlines against the barbarian invaders. He is well versed in tactics and strategy, and is himself a fine soldier.

3. Lucius was a master mason who trained under the famous Grand Mason Mikus Haduccus. He is not only an excellent mason and architect, but also a decent merchant.

You well knew the importance of establishing an agricultural base in any settlement, and were glad to have an educated and competent man like Lucius along to advise you. You spend some time unpacking and arranging your possessions in the small tent, taking special care of the talisman. You're surpised to see that the sun is nearly set when Lucius enters. He's tall and somewhat gaunt, with dark hair, dull eyes, and fair skin, a true imperial man. “I took a group of the men to explore the area nearby, but this vale is vast indeed.” He retrieves some parchment from his pack and places it on the tent's small table. “This is a map of the area we've explored so far. Obviously it's lacking much detail, but it should help with planning the settlement.” You nod appreciatively.

Your flock entered from the southeast corner of the vale, through a great forest that lies at the top of a series of steep hills. The massive lake at its center is home to a small island, and the lake appears to be nearly ringed by forests, but there are some areas that you'll need a boat to access. There does not appear to be any clearing in the forest which is unfortunate from a grazing and agricultural perspective, though that might be a sign that no other people have come to this place.

Having reviewed the nearby geography of the vale, you are left to ponder your first decisions for establishing a settlement here.

>C. Gather food and prepare crops

>D. Set up basic defenses around the camp

The flock spends the next week transplanting berry bushes, collecting forbs, and digging a shallow trench around the encampment. Lucius organizes the men and has them erect a simple wooden fence on the other side of the trench. You go to inspect the tent that now serves as a storehouse, and figure this much should easily last the flock for a month (with a bit of rationing it could stretch to two), discounting whatever is harvested from the berry bushes. One of your subordinate shepherds, Lulu, has, with the help of her husband, started planting a garden from the seeds you brought with you. The talisman of Viride helps determine which crops are best for the area, and with a simple incantation is able to enrich a small patch of soil – perfect for the garden-sized growing Lulu is doing.

You're surveying the grounds, wondering how effective your defenses would actually be, when Lucius walks over to you. “My lady,” - you're still unused to being referred to by title, but Lucius seems most comfortable with formality - “I've taken the liberty of drawing up some plans for some more permanent buildings. Of course we will need to fell some trees, but there certainly isn't any shortage here. I'll leave you to look them over before deciding,” he says, before walking over to another part of the fence.
There are three designs, a simple barracks to let people sleep away from the elements, a small storehouse with a cellar to keep supplies and food safe, and a generic carpenter's workshop which includes an area to install a forge.

Before you can decide, another one of your subordinate shepherds approaches you. It's Marie, your flock's best magic user. “Lucie,” she addresses you, with her usual haughty affectation, “you simply must give me some space from these animals! I cannot research or even practice in these conditions, with all the bugs and the birds and the kissing and the hugging!” Lucie's prudishness aside, there certainly have been problems with keeping track of people and getting them to actually do work when they're sleeping all over the place. You tell her you'll keep it in mind as you head to your tent and decide what to do.

Another week goes by, this time it's marked by very visual progress. Though the personal handaxes that the men brought are hardly ideal for this clear-cutting of this kind, with everyone assisting the trees in the encampment proper are felled. Finally there is decent grazing area available, though for now you've restricted grazing here in the case that it is needed in an emergency capacity later. Lucius managed to get the workshop up in just a few days, though the interior is still being arranged. It's surprisingly comfortable and roomy despite the actual size of the structure. Aside from a great depression in the west wall, clearly meant to house the forge, it also looks pretty complete, with specialty tools hanging from hooks on the side and a large chest full of lumber. A husband and wife duo, the dainty, blonde Ysolde and her brawny, bearded, Titus, have long been the best woodworkers in the flock, and as you are out surveying the new building you see them sizing up a plank together inside. It should be a lot faster and more efficient to get buildings up in the future, with their expertise combined with Lucius' plans.

It's late in the seventh day of the week when the scouting party finally makes it back to the camp. Some had been worried that they were gone so long, since everyone figured it'd be a two or three day trip at most, but they've all shown up unharmed. Eli, the leader of the scouting party, addresses you and starts explaining the details of their exploration. Before she can relay much, you have the sense to call Lucius over and have him expand the map based on her description.

One of the first things that is confirmed is that there is really only one passage into the vale – the one you entered through in the southeast corner. The second thing that strikes you is the size of the vale, it's around twenty square miles, all told, with the lake representing about half that. The lake is fed by a large river on the north side that runs down a mountain valley into the vale. They counted at least a dozen caves, but did not venture into any of them. There is a small mountain range on the west side of the lake that stands independent of the rest, and was noted to have clearly visible surface minerals. Forested hills along the north side had outcroppings of some kind of limestone or marble. Plenty of animals, mostly deer and rabbits, were spotted along the way, though they were left undisturbed. Worryingly, there was some evidence of large predators, especially along the west side of the lake.

Lucius finishes the expanded map and hands it to you. There is a great wealth of resources here, clearly, but some dangers as well. You thank them both for the assistance and retire to your tent. Things are still fairly disorganized but you're starting to get a clearer picture of what to do about it.

>G. Strengthen defenses further
This week was very busy, but everyone was relieved to stay at camp. Though roughly the same number of trees were felled, the design requirements of the mage's lodge and storehouse were significantly less intensive than the workshop, and thanks to Ysolde and Titus these buildings could be fashioned from planks instead of cut logs. The storehouse is really only slightly larger than your tent, but it's got the root cellar to keep food fresh longer. Lucius showed you some plans to add a smokehouse to the building's side, but it's more of a long-term idea given the lack of sustained hunting or fishing. Lulu's garden was fenced in and expanded on her own accord, and sits just across from the storehouse.
Marie, your flock's most magically (and as far as she's considered, intellectually) gifted member, was glad to take up residence in the library-lodge. It's not much of a library at this point, since it only contains the books people brought with them, mostly nursery rhymes and romances, but Marie did have a small collection of historical and magical tomes too. Aside from directing and organizing people, you spent a good part of this week sewing together some cushions from last year's shearings. Titus fixed up some chairs, both of the human and Lanatae variety, and together you managed to set up the lodge with some comfortable seating. Everyone's glad to have a place to read in tranquility, and Marie doesn't seem to mind them so long as they sit quietly. Speaking of Marie, she explained that she'd like to conduct some research, but that she would need Lucius' help. She didn't go into any detail as to what exactly the research was into, but said that it would definitely speed up the process of planting and growing crops.

Eli and the men spent most of the week digging a deeper trench on the other side of the small fence, to the point that entry and exit from the camp requires crossing a small land bridge, which is constantly guarded by one of the former legionaries.

Cooling temperatures and cloudy skies remind you that it's been nearly a month since you arrived, and autumn will soon be upon you. Autumn itself is full of bounty, but it's the last desperate gasp of life before winter entombs all. It'll be hard to find food in the winter, and it'd be best to have more permanent shelter up by then, so you've still got a lot of work ahead of you.

>D. Have Lucius build you some personal quarters (also functions as a weaver's workshop)

>F. Gather food

Amber leaves and pine needles litter the whole floor of the vale, and near-constant breeze chills the air. It is autumn, and in the last week you saw to some preparations for it. First off, you sent people out to gather food. Lulu and most of the flock went to gather more forbs and berry bushes, while Eli led a party to try hunting. The results of these expeditions were better than expected, as a hunter in Eli's party managed to take down a deer. It's the first meat anyone has had in a good long while, and while Lanatae aren't particularly fond of game, there was a bit of a celebration held around the storehouse.

Again trees were cut from the surrounding forest, though this time more was felled than usual, and some lumber was left over in reserve, for firewood. The iron handaxes the men have carried with them since before the departure are showing visibile wear, and will need to be repaired or replaced soon.

Finally there is a communal barracks, erected right near the water's edge, as far as possible from the camp's outer edges, as a precautionary measure. It's really just a longhouse with several beds, including a few designed for humanoids. There is a fire pit in the near the center of the barracks as well, as warmth becomes more of an issue. Lucius' original designs had called for a hypocaust, to heat the building from underneath, but you deemed it too labor and resource intensive for the time being. About half the flock can sleep in the barracks at one time, so it's not a permanent solution to the shelter issue, but it's a big (and welcome) step forward.

[continued]
>>
>>46442986
Even more welcome, for you at least, is the new, personal cottage Lucius built you. You don't have a big enough ego to demand personal quarters without reason, and it's really more of a workshop than a home, but it feels great to be out of the tent. It's got two rooms, the larger of the two serving as your workspace, adorned with tools, wool, and cloths, – presently you lack a loom, but it's certainly within Ysolde's skillset to create one – while the smaller room serves as a private bedroom and meeting space. Rather than the simple baskets that serve as the Lanatae beds in the barracks, yours is more akin to a throne in design, made of solid wood and cushioned with high-quality wool padding. Here too, there is a small firepit and a shuttered window that looks out over the encampment – now more of a village – and the lake beyond. Despite the fairly spartan arrangements, you feel incredibly secure and comfortable inside.

As you're settling in to your new home, Maries comes to visit you, and again recommends you “give her Lucius for a week.” It's not long after she's left that receive a rare guest – Lily, a shy and timid member of the flock who doesn't stand out much. Lily tells you that she's been working on some fishing nets, and pulls them from her satchel to show you. It's remarkably fine work, and you reckon they would have sold for five or six denarii back home. She explains that she'd like to set up the nets to ensure a steady supply of fish. The best place to set them up would be along the river to the north, but she recognizes the danger there, so requests that a dock or boat be constructed so she can set them up near camp. Certainly a worthwile suggestion, given that food scarcity will be a real problem come winter.

Economy is nice and all, and I do like the feeling of building up our little village.

But what about our neighbors? And what about breeding?

The second month is well underway, as you direct the flock to deal with some of the incidentals that have been hanging around for a while. First, as always, you cut more lumber, and add some of it to the reserve. Titus and Ysolde had a busy week, making a simple boat and a loom for your workshop. The boat is an oar-powered two-to-three person affair, though Lanatae have difficulty on or in water so it's designed more to accommodate the humanoids. Lily set out with some assistance to set up nets a few hundred yards out, and one of the men is eager to try out some active fishing. A good source of food, if a bit unreliable. The loom was installed in your cottage with little difficulty, it being an item most all Lanatae are familiar with, and you feel good about finally being able to do some meaningful work yourself.

You relented to Marie's request, and Lucius assisted her in the lodge for the entire week. The two of them hardly came out the whole time, and Marie didn't permit anyone into the lodge for the duration, so you're not sure what exactly they did, but Marie came out confidently and declared she would be assisting Lulu with the crops for a little while. Lucius seemed indifferent to the whole affair.

The last day of the week, today, is your first exposure to a real storm since you've been here. Lanatae are naturally frightened of loud sounds, and the thunder of this storm seems especially loud to you. Holed up in your cottage, you feel somehwat envious of the rest of the flock, who are taking shelter together in the barracks, when you hear your front door slide open. Heavy footfalls and the flexing of leather are audible through the door to your bedroom. Already agitated from the storm, you grab your ceremonial crook and open the door, ready to strike whoever entered unnanounced for being so insensitive.

You're genuinely shocked to see a small bearded humanoid, dressed in leathers and wearing an eyepatch, rummaging through your things. He turns to face you, similarly surprised at first, but then sneers and pulls a dagger.

[Roll 18]

Before he can really react, though, you club him upside the head, and send him reeling. He tumbles over the counter of your workspace and lands on his back, the dagger landing some distance away. Paralyzed like a deer in the headlights, though, you look on in terror as he starts getting back up. Lucius and two other men, one of which you recognize as the legionary sentry, burst through the front door through the pouring rain and proceed to wrestle the tiny man to the floor. It is then that you realize you've been screaming, and promptly stop, before striking the bearded man on the head once again, knocking him unconscious.

Just when you think it's over, you all hear shouts coming from outside. You peer through the doorway and spot the unmistakable light of five lanterns, each closing on the perimeter of the village.

It appears the vale is not as uninhabited as you thought.

Okay I'm sorry, but why the hell are the horns located next to her lower torso? Why not her head? It would look cuter anyways.
