You are Tom Gainer, Class 5 Super and volunteer Cape. Today is a great day! You awake to the sun shine and the smell of Jim making pancakes. You put on your new outfit and trim the rogue hairs from your neat beard. Honestly, you think the facial hair was the best thing to come out of training in the wilderness. You like the ruggedness of it. You but a comb through your firetruck red hair before styling it a little and scramble downstairs for breakfast. You are surprised to see not just Jim at the table, but also Tiffany Cooke (aka Cicada Killer) in her crime-fighting costume and a man you don't recognize. You assume he's the other Union Cape currently trying to restore order to Crimson Beach as he is also in a costume.

Cicada Killer's costume very much reminds you of a wasp or similar insect. It even has insect-like wings on the back of the costume, draping down like a short cape. You take a brief moment to appreciate how the costume accentuates her physique.

"Tom Gainer! Speak of the devil!" The unknown man chimes in gesturing at you and smiling. "We were just about to call you down!"

>"Oh." Sit down to the plate Jim has graciously prepared for you. "What do you want?"
>"Who are you?"
>"Its nice to meet you, Mister..."
>"Isn't it a bit early for house calls?"

(For those wanting a consistant starting image, I'm working creating one, but it might take a little while. Since I'm starting art school this week.)

It might be a good morning, but you've never been much of a morning person. Still somewhat in that haze of waking up, you reply rather bluntly to the man.

"Oh?" You sit down at the plate of pancakes and eggs that Jim has prepared for you, like the great friend he is, and continue, "What do you want?" You shove a bit of the scrambled eggs in your mouth and listen.

"Er... Yes. Allow me to introduce myself. I am Echo and I'm the senior Cape currently in charge of assisting with the repair and peacekeeping of Crimson Beach. Since you've volunteered to help us at the International Union of Powered Heroes," You see Cicada Killer smirk a little and roll her eyes at the mention of the official name of the Super Union. "And after reviewing the information released to us by Platinum Towers, we've decided to send you out on a supervised patrol with Cicada Killer to gauge your skill, powers, responses to the public." It sounds a little rehearsed, but you think that might not be a bad thing. These guys follow set rules for including non-Union Supers in their activities for a reason, probably.

>"Working with Tiffany? I think I can do that." Wink and rolll for flirting (d100-10 for being in a semi-professional setting)
>"Working with CK? I think I can do that. What's the mission?"
>"Is this really necessary? I'm not much of a team player."
>"Echo? Never heard of you. What can you do?"

Yes there are a few influences from Worm, but I really tried my best to keep homages and references to a minimum as I plan on using this setting as the basis of a graphic novel series.

That series will be following a different character you might meet later.

You take a second to look between Tiffany and Echo before answering.

"Working with CK? I can do that. What's the mission? Where are we patrolling?" You cut into your syrup-smothered pancakes and take a bite. Echo's grin widens slightly.

"You'll be investigating some mysterious disappearances in Mid Town. We have reason to suspect a Super is involved." Echo produces a manila folder and sets it in front of Tiffany, who opens it and moves several crime scene photos of empty houses in front of you. "What we gather is that the abductor is some kind of manipulator. In every disappearance, there are no signs of struggle or forced entry. They just up and left their houses and never returned." You look closer at the photos. Some look like people left in the middle of meals. There is one where a bathtub is overflowing. Another one has a back pack and a suitcase just left on the ground in the middle of an open door. You almost wonder if this isn't just some photography student's portfolio.

"You and Cicada Killer will going interviewing associates of each victim and hopefully establishing a pattern. After that, we'll see where things go." He smiles again. "Any questions about this or in general?"

You raise your fork as you ask a question. "This doesn't pertain to the case, but you said you go by Echo. Do you have sound powers too?" His smile falters a little before he answers.

"Er, no. Actually my powers aren't combative. They're investigative. I can generate a projection of a recently deceased individual and follow their final actions in reverse for up to an hour prior to death. Normally helpful, to the police, but not this time. That's why I need you and CK to do this while I continue doing what I do for CBPD's forensics team."

Kind of macabre for a guy who dresses as brightly as Echo.

Jim's pancakes man. I mean would you voluntarily leave hot fresh pancakes made by a Minotaur? I thought not, especially when that Minotaur can cook.
>>

To take a sip of orange juice before replying.

"I think I got it. Mind if I finish my breakfast first? Jim makes some killer pancakes." They nod and Jim offers them a plate. Tiffany accepts, like any college student living on ramen and easy mac would do, but Echo declines saying he has to head over to the crime lab to follow up on another case. Jim really seemed to outdo himself on these pancakes this time. You taste a hint of vanilla and some banana and strawberry. You don't know how he does it. Maybe its another Power he got from the Blast? After the both of you finish your plates and wash up you decide to head out. Jim tells you he has to work today as well and hands you a key to the house. If you wind up finishing your patrol before he gets home, you can let yourself in.

You head outside and don't see a vehicle. You ask Tiffany if you are walking to Mid Town from here. She smirks and replies. "These wings aren't a fashion statement, you know." The previously limp membranes spring to life buzzing like a small motorcycle. If you weren't immune to high levels of noises you're pretty sure you would have some significant hearing damage if you had to be close to it for long.

"They're a little noisy," Tiffany shouts over them as she dons orange and black ear protectors. "But they're strong enough to carry up to 400 pounds plus my own body weight without breaking a sweat." That's pretty impressive, you admit. She ceases the noise briefly and pulls the file again. "The three most recent disappearances are 3 males from Mid Town. Donovan Bucholtz, 25, Wallace Long, 33, and Assad Aqueel, 27. They have relatives nearby. Bucholtz's mother lives in The Dunes neighborhood a couple miles south of here. Long's uncle in an apartment in Old Town near the Station. Aqueel has a brother, but his last known address puts him in The Husk, so we're not sure exactly where he's staying now."

"Wait, hold up now." You interrupt her. "What's the Husk? Nobody's mentioned any place by that name to me before. What is that? WHERE is that?" She sighs and taps a hand against her head.

"The Husk is the burnt up husk of sections of Mid Town and its closest subdivisions, Cherry Grove and Sunny Hill. This happened back when the Quarantine was still in effect. The Union Capes overseeing the Quarantine, Reflex and Waylay, were trying to suppress a large gang battle between the Scrappers and Odinsons. An unknown Super caused a massive, uncontrollable fire. The Capes opted to try to multitask between evacuating civilians in the fire's path and cease the gun battle." She hesitates for a moment, "It didn't end well. Flashpoint died from major burns. Waylay was shot in the back. It left him paralyzed from the neck down, but he's still alive. There were a few civilian casualties, but if the Union hadn't done what they did, there might have been more."

"Damn..." That's all you can think to say to that. You knew that the Capes weren't having a good run of things in the city. Silver Eagle being the freshest example in your head. How many other Capes have died trying to get this hellish town back on its feet? At least 2 and one permanently crippled that you know of. They said they had been switching Capes once a month, was that to keep of stress? Or was it because that's how long they last before serious injuries or worse? At least you know why no one talks about the Husk. You shake the ominous thoughts from your head and tell yourself to focus. You change the subject.

"Let's start with the mother. Mrs. Bucholtz." You decide, pointing to a picture of the young man with the same last name. Cicada Killer seems happy for the change in subject.

"Okay. She lives on the northern end of the Dunes. I can get us there in about 10 minutes. Hope you're not afraid of heights. She starts up her wings again with all its noise. She grabs you by the forearms and takes off. Its like you weigh nothing to her and you're rather impressed at her speed. It won't be long at all until you reach the destination.

While you don't think its a good idea to let go of her arms to snap, you decide to take this opportunity to practice your sound suppression skills. You concentrate a little on the sound waves being produced and slowly fade them out.

"Whoa, did you do that? I can't hear my wings at all!" She shouts over the quiet. "That's amazing!" She adjusts to the new levels of ambient sound.

"Well it would be a bit annoying to shout over to talk to you." You decide not to mention what happened last time you used your power without using a focus point. It'd ruin the coolness. "So I like your uniform. It looks amazing on you." You start of with a compliment.

"Thanks! I designed it myself. I thought it went well with the wings." So those wings are a part of her. That's good to know. "I like your new look." She tosses a compliment right back at you.

"So how goes that paper? Has my interview helped?" You ask.

"Hah! It really threw my professor for a loop when I told her about it. She approved of using it on the stipulation I share the interview with the police as well. Your eyewitness account could reignite cold leads." She seems to be beaming at the thought.

"Well if you need more material, I'd be happy to do another one. Over a lunch, maybe?" You smile up at her.

You get a playful look in your eyes as you stare into her's and reply. "Mmmmmaybe..." You swing your legs a little for maximum effect. She laughs. You find it adorable.

"Well then, maybe I'll take you up on that." She replies. "Maybe we should meet at Giuseppe's in Old Town. I'll be there tomorrow around 1pm." She swings you from side to side slightly, which would be more fun if you weren't so high in the air. But being the smooth operator that you are, you don't let it show.

"Then maybe I'll see you there!" You keep up the joke just one line more before you two finally reach your destination. Mrs. Bucholtz's house is a two-story home with white siding and a built in garage on the left. There seems to be a similar house every third house down from her in this subdivision. Not that you care, but even Jim's gated community has more diverse living space than this place.

"Alright. Since this is your first patrol, I'll let you choose." Tiffany gets back into business mode at the drop of a hat, apparently. "Either you can lead and ask the questions first, or you can observe this one and do the interview of Long's uncle."

>I'll ask the questions this time. You just tell me how I did when we're done.

You tell Cicada Killer you'd prefer if she takes the lead on this one, but you'd still like to ask questions if you think of something important to ask. She nods in approval and instructs you to follow her to the door. You both walk up and are greeted by an older lady in an old t-shirt covered in light blue paint and faded jeans covered in similar paint. She looks sad.

"Can I help you?" She asks politely.

"Are you Mrs. Bucholtz?" The woman nods. "I'm Cicada Killer with the IUPH on behalf of the Crimson Beach Police. This is my partner, Mr. Gainer. We'd like to ask you a few questions about your son, Donovan Bucholtz. It won't be but a few minutes of your time." Tiffany sounds quite professional, but that's to be expected. She's done this several times. The older woman agrees and motions for the two of you to come in. She guides you to her living room. Several plastic tarps litter the floor. Cans of paint, a few paint trays and a ladder stand in the corner. Looks like she decided to update the color today.

"Thank you, ma'am, I know this must be a tough time for you. We appreciate your cooperation." Tiffany chimes in again.

"Anything if it helps you find my son. He's a good boy. I don't know why someone would do this to him." The woman confesses weakly. She makes you think about your mother. You realize you still haven't called them. You've been back in contact with the real world for almost a week now and you haven't called your folks to tell them you're not dead or a criminal. They must be worried.

You zoned out of the conversation for a little, but CK is diligently taking notes on every important point the lady raised. You sneak a peek at her notes to catch up.

Donovan was a personal trainer at Mid Town Fitness and, until the Incident, going to CBU for Sports Medicine. A decent student and model employee according to his mother. Didn't have a girlfriend or significant other. Didn't have any known enemies. Was not a Super. Didn't have any gang affiliations.

Seems Donny-boy was a real stand-up guy. Kind of a shame something like this would happen to him. You empathize with the missing person. You're not a stranger to bad luck.

Back up to speed, you listen in on the interview trying to think of any pertinent questions you might have.

You decide now is the time for chime in with some questions of your own.

"I understand your son had nothing to do with the gangs in the area, but did he ever mention any gang activity in his area? Did he mention anything odd happening around his work or his apartment?"

"Not really. I had talked to him earlier in the week, but he didn't mention anything. Donny always said that his part of Mid Town was relatively safe as long as you remembered to lock up." You wonder if Don was just making sure his mother didn't worry. You move on to your next question.

"Do you know any of his usual hang outs? Does he have any friends in the area we could talk to?"

She thinks about this for a moment. "Donny is an outgoing boy. You know he was on the University's Track team? Most of his friends also work at the gym or at least go there. I don't know if they meet up anywhere else since the University shut down." Well at least there's another lead. Mid Town Fitness. Maybe a coworker or client might know more.

Tiffany wraps things up with a few smaller questions, but they don't yield any worthwhile results. But now you do have some useful information on the next step on tracking down Donovan's activities before he disappeared. You and Cicada Killer thank Mrs. Bucholtz for her time and see yourselves out. CK stops momentarily to hand her a business card with her number, Echo's, and Platinum Tower's help line.

"Well now we have another stop to make. We either take care of Mr. Long's uncle in Old Town now or follow up on the Gym immediately. They're about equal distance away from here." Its about mid-morning now.

>Check in on Long's uncle first and see if there are any similarities in their basic routines.

You vote for taking care of Wallace Long's uncle before moving on to the gym. You reason it would be useful to get the gist of both victim's routines and see if there's any common ground or overlap. You see Tiffany smirk as she agrees with you and tell you to hang on. Again, her wings start to buzz and she grabs you by your forearms. With minimal effort you mute the sound of the buzzing significantly so the two of you can talk. Rather than the flirting and planning of the first ride, the two of you discuss theories about the abductions, though without more substantial facts, all them seem pretty wild. Some of the wilder ones include Invisible and Intangible Serial Killers, ninjas (your contribution, though it was more of a joke), Some kind of Super stalker taking things too far, to some kind of high powered psychic. That last one makes Tiffany nervous. Psychics are a rare strain of Powers, but are almost always dangerous to some degree. In the history of Supers, there has never been a psychic below a class 3. You agree that someone who can disable you just by thinking about you would be a real trial.

You let the conversation die and recap what you know in your head:

Donovan was a model citizen. No enemies, no gang affiliations.
He wasn't a Super.
No significant other and wasn't seeing anyone.
Nothing odd was mentioned to his mother, who he talked to earlier in the week.
The area of Mid Town he lived in was fairly quiet with a low crime-rate.

Not really much to go on, but maybe there will be something about Wallace Long that will show a pattern.
