Eclipse Phase Quest: TARNISHED CHROME

You remember the tube; drugs in your system, needles in your arm, barely feeling the headrest as every cell in your body prepares to freeze over. Everything seems so white, so cold. A cute tech leans over the side of the tube
and pats you on the cheek. "Say hello to the future for us" They say with a smile, and everything fades to black...

Everything fades to white... It's a room, white walls, white floor, white ceiling, all lit in a white light that comes from somewhere, maybe everywhere. And in the middle, looking like one of those bad old science fiction movies, is a simple white table, edged with green, with two institutional white and gray chairs on opposite side of it.
Did it work? Is this the future?

>Look around, maybe there's a door or window

You start feeling around the walls, looking for different textures. You would have used your eyes, but it's so hard to see even the joins between surfaces. The light is hard to deal with too, you don't seem to be casting a shadow...

It has been a few minutes of searching, and there's nothing so far. The walls are pleasantly textured, a barely there stippling of paint, but not a single crack, piece of glass, or tiny hole to put a camera in.
A rolling sound, like a sliding door opening, comes from behind you. Spinning around, a section of the wall, about the size of a door, has slid away. You think. It's been replaced by flat black, through which no light comes from or goes into. But a man is there, stepping through. A bit of a rough face, but gentle still, in a classic business suit and a confident stride, holding a manila folder and a pen.
He gestures with the pen at a chair. "Please, sit down."
As you sit down (ooh, these chairs are comfy), he sits opposite you. "Now, I'm sure you have many questions, but we also have some for you." He sets the folder down. "Your file didn't come with you, so we'll need your help to reconstruct it."
He opens the folder and pen before looking at you.
"Let's begin with your name. If you want a new one, we can take that one down as well."

You pause for a moment. Your memory must be having issues from the cryotube, you can't remember anything about yourself. He asks again. Now you remember, but you aren't sure if it is your actual name or a new one.
“Brahmaputra Nau. But I think my friends called me Bob.”

He nods, writing it down. It's actual paper, something you barely handled in school. Almost everybody had moved over to tablets and stylus for this sort of thing. He looks back at you. “Memory issues?” He asks. You nod and he sighs, muttering something to himself. You think you might have caught the words “... again... nevermind... foreward...”

“Anyways," he begins again "what is your gender identity? I can presume male from your name, but I've seen plenty of women with weirder ones.”

You tilt your head, thinking. “Female.” You say, feeling a bit more confident in your self-identity. Not that you can really remember your identity right now. “And what were you talking about? Is this a simulation, or are you just that old-fashioned? I barely held paper books when I was in school.”

The man simply cocks an eyebrow at you. “I'll explain later.” His eyes briefly unfocus, then refocus. “You are currently being held in a simulation, as your physical situation is a bit... delicate. Alcor couldn't make any promises, and we're doing our best to defrost you healthily.” He writes down your gender, then looks back up at you. “But I can be that old fashioned. Onto the next question: Where were you raised?”

“I wanted to see if the future had genetically engineered animal girls.” You say. That answer seems to be right. “And if I could become one.” You shrug. “Nobody wanted to listen to me or my money, so I said fuck the past and got frozen.” Not that you're sure where those fat stacks of your family's money came from, or if they even belonged to your family. This entire 'not-sure-of-own-identity' thing should probably be freaking you out more than it is.
It is at this point that the man puts his face in his palms. “Let me get this straight...” He begins. “You bought a one-way ticket to tomorrow in hopes your fetish would become real?”
You nod and he seems to slide into sadness as his hands slide down to the table.
“Well,” he says. “I've seen way fucking worse reasons. There was this idiot two weeks ago who tried to leave a corporation behind that would take over the world and hand it to him when he woke up. He tried to sue us for the company failing.”
You chuckle at the image. Stupid idiot.
Pen is placed on paper again, and he doesn't even look up before continuing. “Good news: your fetish is real. Bad news: none related to your fetish. Sort of. So what did you do before you were frozen? And not just jobs, but also hobbies and interests.”

Bodyscuplting is also cheap.

You want like, genetically inherent traits, then we'll have to do some science.
>>
(I tried to find a good picture, I really did...)

“I was researching genetics.” You begin. “In hindsight, I should've stayed and tried to do it myself, but that equipment is expensive, and nobody would give me funding to try for doing that.”
The man nods and jots down a note. “Anything else?”
“I did martial arts, specifically Akido, Karate, and Krav Maga, along with general working out.”
He nods. “well, these are the highlights, and we've been watching your responses. You check out. Now...” He snaps his fingers and an entire wall changes to a starfield. “I promised an explanation.”

He walks to the front of the wall and places his hands in mid-air, a dark wood-and-brass railing shimmering into appearance beneath them. All around, the room changes to dark wood and gleaming brass, expanding and curving, even the table and chairs changing to fit. You now sit on a balcony that overlooks some sort of grand ballroom. And the walls are windows curving upward to become the ceiling and beyond them lie the stars. It's... really beautiful, you decide. You never liked those neo-victorian imperialist-facists that call themselves “steampunk”, but it's beautiful.

“There's a lot of bad news.” The man begins. “17 years ago, runaway AI's with bootstrap capabilities called TITANS lead to the destruction of Earth as we know it. Humanity barely survived, and cyropods like yours were very low evacuation priority. Since then, some of us have worked on gathering survivors and making sure they weren't infected with the weapons the TITANS used.” He brings out a slim silver case and extracts a cigarette. Twirling it, he continues.
>>
“I used to be an employee of Alcor, the company that pioneered every advance in cryogenics. When you bought your ticket, it was our equipment. When someone had an incurable disease, it was our equipment. So on and so on. When The Fall came, “ and here you can almost hear the capitol letters. “cryotubes were so low on the evacuation list that potting soil ranked ahead. So we bribed and pleaded and got as many as we could up the well.” He pauses the twirling to light the cigarette, smoke drifting a bit too coherently in the air. “You got scattered, and so few of us got up that most of the tubes got lost, just sitting in cargo holds with tanks of liquid nitrogen and nuclear batteries.” He turns to face you, his suit just slightly fancier, with a symbol on the chest – a lightning shaped serpent coming from a cloud. “I spent 5 years working an indenture. 7 more working to get the resources I needed. And the past 5 years have been spent on getting every tube I can find.”

A panel floats in the air, depicting a tube and a name. Your name. It sounds kind of silly. “We found you floating in open space.” He says, waving a hand at the panel. “Some brain crystallization had set in, along with the regular issues caused by cryogenics. This is why you have memory issues. You seem to be much the same person, but there are many things you won't remember until the right stimulus comes up.” He shrugs. “This has been attempt 5 to rez you. Anything you want to talk about?”

You shake your head, then nod. “I have a lot of questions, so let's start with the important ones. What did you mean by attempt 5? What's the political situation? Economics? Am I still worth anything? What's Earth like? Can I visit other planets? Am I stuck with the name my parents gave me? Can I become an animal girl?”

He chuckles. “Your neural networks suffered some damage during your stay in space. This is the fifth attempt we've made to heal the damage, and so far the best. Your bank accounts crashed during the Fall, and there's multiple economies throughout the system. We can't easily travel between stars, and that's a complicated subject. We can make you look like an animal girl, and plenty of people look them already. As for politics...” He sighs. “There's some major players to pay attention to.”
He waves his hand and another panel floats in the air, symbols and text scrolling down it. “The Inner System is split between the Planetary Consortium, which is a council controlled by corporations; the Lunar-Lagrange Alliance, which is friendly with the PC; and the Morningstar Confederation, which controls Venus. The Outer System has the Titanian Commonwealth; the Autonomist Alliance, which is a loose alliance of various habitats, and the Jovian Republic. Unless we can fully repair your original body, and you want to keep it, you really can't visit the Jovians though.”
Another panel, another lecture... “And speaking of bodies, we have the ability to put you in a new one. You can also modify them to your liking. Would you like to see the options?”
You nod. “Can you explain anything I can't figure out?” He nods in response.

Frobisher blinks in surprise. “I can honestly say that I have never heard that request before. Let me see what we can do. Meanwhile, we have written a tutorial program to take you through some of the details I didn't mention.” And with that, he disappears like he's on Star Trek.

It's been an entertaining few hours, learning about the situation today. “I always like having knowledge.” You say, pointing at the panels of information where you've sidetracked into deeper dives into topics. “I tended to be pretty studious.”
Frobisher nods, making a note. “Your lifestyle tends to effect your morph – certain action groups are harder to use if you don't have the instinctual, muscle-memory level knowledge of how to do them.” He closes his notebook.
“Hey.” You interrupt. “You did tell them that I wanted a humanoid scorpion morph, not one of those centaur ones, right?”
He nods, which is really starting to get on your nerves. Always that same little nod. “Of course. They will be discussing with you over the next couple of days, but this” a panel shows a picture “is basically what they're looking at.” Looking over the little beauty, you feel yourself growing a bit aroused. Maybe more than a bit. To be that? That's hot.
“Maybe more brown in the skin.” You say. “I liked having brown skin.”

“We also have a few gifts for you.” He says. The scene changes dramatically, the windows showing what appears to be a hanger. “This is a live feed of our hangers.” It zooms in on a tiny little ship. Okay, not that tiny. “This is going to be your ship. 3 reconfigurable cabins, 1 industrial nanofac, storm cellar, AGI pilot, and two types of engines: Metallic Hydrogen and Fusion Rocket, both using the latest in barely-understood alien salvage to get some ridiculous performance. Okay, I will give this until tomorrow, allow people to possibly find it and vote.
It's also been archived on suptg, so if we fall off the board I can start a second thread.
I need sleep. And for my partner to not pull my spine out for paying attention to the computer above everything else.

But you'll get the chance to swap them out later.

“Well,” You laugh. “The first one is easy – Genehacker. I wanted to create abominations of science then, I want to create them now. I suppose Techie to help keep my equipment running and....” You frown in thought. “I really didn't like the sound of the surprises that the TITANs left behind. I'll take Wrecker as my third.”
Frobisher nods. “Onto the skillsofts. Oh, and if it seems like I'm giving just enough to push you to get more, that's because I am. I find that tends to work best with getting obs up to speed. So let's double check your loaded skillsofts.”

Shitposting (Angering people)

We should already have a shitload of Academic and Medical skills based on Genehacker, skillsoft is basically getting a weak AI which knows stuff at a competent level. They will not boost our extant skills.

Then History, Fighting Strategies and Transhuman Culture/Biology.
And shitposting.

SO our votes so far for Skillsofts are

“Hmm... Well, I need to know the culture, so something on that. I might end up fighting people, so something that tells me how to best go about that, and...” You furrow your brow in thought. “History. Especially recent history, but I know that the conditions for today spread pretty far into the past, so I need something to help give context.” You wave your hand somewhat dismissively as a random though flits across your mind. “I can figure out the modern porn situation on my own. I can get more skillsofts, though, right?.”
Frobisher gives a slight nod and a smile. “Seems pretty good so far. Your skillware has a limit of three skills, but yes, you can build up your own library. Now, I'm going to leave you alone for a little bit, but the next part is important. You're going to get a Muse, a smart AI designed to be caretaker and companion. A personal secretary, if you will. I'll leave you to the set-up program.” He leaves in that weird star trek-y way, and another god-damn panel shows up.
“Welcome to the Bakula Collective's Muse Set-Up program! We're skipping past the kids section right now. Would you like to base your Muse on a character from our Personality Archives, create your own from our Trait Database, or let it develop naturally?”

“I'll let it happen naturally” you say, hoping the program is smart enough to respond to voice input.
“Excellent!” Says the program (although you're pretty sure it says that to every choice). “Keep in mind, your Muse will be asking you lots of questions to figure out your needs. Your Muse needs a name! Would you like our Random Generator, or to pick a name yourself?”

“Good day. I am Orion, your Muse. I can take this form, or move to a different look, as you wish. What would you like to do? I learn best of your needs from observation.”

>Write in action

I'm going to let this go for now. I might pick it up later, but I have things to do.
If I don't pick it up later today, I'll pick a start time and day and announce it in the /epg/ thread.

Are we allowed to list additional features we want for our new body?
>>
>>46356366

We can sort that out later if we get a budget. Our initial model comes with a good spread of enhancements too.

Also, can we tone down the claws thing? Lacks manipulators is kind of a bitch, even with a prehensile tail/poison gland. Hands are very important for manual safety features
>>
>>46356622
Hands inside claws.

Eh, that's still really clunky. Might as well go like a novacrab and have a second set of arms for like, regular hands.

Sorry, as a long time EP GM and Player, I just can't get over the inefficiency. I know this is /tg/ and fetish shit will win anyway, but in my mind, I can't not be like "Oh man, even with smart materials we're not gonna be able to grab shit with giant crab claws. Can't hold anything properly, and we'll never kill a TITAN warmachine with fucking CLAWS why did people think this was a good idea?"

I suppose I could just wait until it kills us and then on the next round be like "Alright, so, design flaw".

I mean, the setting has razorgirl/wolverine claws already. Or just like cat claws which aren't cyber. The question is do we need to have our claws be giant pincers or can we roll it back a little?
>>
>>46357122
Giant retractable pincer gauntlets?
>>
What if the hand was kind of just sticking out of the claw?

From the bottom half of the pincer I guess (the top part moves in scorpions), below the actual pincer part.
>>
>>46357195
That'd be pretty awkward to hold anything with a giant claw in the way.
>>
>>46357411
A hell of a lot less awkward than trying to hold it with the claw

“Miss, the local genehackers wish to discuss your project with you.” Orion interrupts his relentless grilling of your preferences, growing ever more like the classic British butler every moment. “They want to discuss possible designs for your claws.”
Ah, that was a short turn around. “Okay Orion, let's talk to them.”
A single person in street clothes walks around the curve of the balcony. Average height, but the averages stop there. Male, with some sort of crazy augmented red-and-orange arm and seriously spiky hair.
“Ah, there you!” He begins, cracking a crazy smile. He dramatically extends his augmented arm. “Welcome! To the world of tomorrow!” He drops the arm and chuckles. “So you're the one with the crazy requests.” A briefcase comes out of nowhere and is placed on the table. Opening it, he pushes some buttons and a hologram appears above. He looks at you. “Hi, I'm Jerry, one of Frobisher's best genehackers. We've been looking at several possibilities for your claws, and it's been interesting.”
He points at the hologram, pretty much the same image Frobisher had shown you earlier. But now the skin is brown and the entire body is more rugged looking. “The tail is easy. So are the carapace sections in aesthetically pleasing areas. Even the poison is easy. But giving you claws and usable hands at the same time is a major concern.”
>>
Several holograms appear, each showing various ways the claws could be attached and used.
“We have several possible models here. The first uses extra muscles to swing both halves of the claws out of the way, allowing the hand beneath to be utilized. The second is like the first, but swings the entire claw to one side. The third adds a wrist joint to the outside of the inner claw, with a flexible hand that extends from it and sits flush to the carapace when not in use. Then we hit creepy fingers by having the fingers mount to the claws themselves, allowing you to open the claw and extend the fingers. Sub models of this one use various finger lengths, ranging from human normal to slenderman. Our next models are what we call our lazy models: an extra pair of arms that have hands, or cybernetic claws that slide up and down the arm as needed. We could do that one biologically with a few years more research and testing.”
The holograms are swept away and replaced with a single one, showing what looks like a pretty regular hand. Looking at it, you feel... Disappointed. “This is extremely easy, but is more related to the concept of scorpion claws than anything else. Metamorphic keratin with structural enhancements is placed along the index finger and thumb. When given the correct command, it shifts like so -” Here the hologram shows the change in slow motion. “- giving two edges that can be used in a manner similar to scorpion claws, if not as powerful.”
The full array of holograms is shown before you. “So here comes priorities. Which one do you want us to focus on, and what is your preferred secondary in case the first doesn't work?”

>Model 1 – Swing away, reveal hand

You look closely at the models, their strengths and weaknesses showing as little tags. “Let's try model 1.” You say. “That would have the least number of mechanical issues.” You feel so proud for having studied this sort of thing in a theoretical sense. “If we can't make that work, let's go lazy and have model 5.”
Jerry makes an appreciative noise. “Nice to see a client with sense when it comes to their fantasies. To be fair, that will be the easiest one.” He brings up another hologram. This one shows a tank with a... That's a pretty hot body, brown with black carapace in all the right places and nice 1.5 handful tits. “This will be your morph. Be careful with it though, the Theseus requires a bit of work to grow right with all the genetic adjustments, and we grow them only on demand. We can build the claws and add them on later when grown, so you can sleeve into it right now. That will allow you to get used to the body first, and I'm sure you're itching to get out of this simulspace.”
You nod. There's something not quite right about this place. Maybe the way the air circulation doesn't seem to really happen... “Let's do this.”
