You are Kusajishi Riku, a shinigami Captain in charge of the Seireitei's Ninth Division. Not long has passed since you and your allies defeated a small but powerful scouting force sent by the rogue Captain Aizen Sōsuke, taking two prisoners in the process. These were the Sternritter Bambietta Basterbine and an arrancar named Menoly, whose position in Aizen's forces you do not know: both now wear the sort of special restraining collar fitted to prisoners condemned to execution by the Sōkyoku which rob their victims of their ability to manifest reiryoku as reiatsu.

The two are now more or less harmless, both due to these restraints as well as their wounds.

Ninth Division's grounds aren't along the shortest route to the Maggots' Nest, where Bambietta and Menoly are to be deposited, but it might be best to consolidate information as quickly as possible in the wake of the fights and your Division should be able to help disseminate whatever can be gleaned from the shared experiences of the arrancar and Captains who participated.

“You should go gather your officers,” Yoruichi suggests, shifting the Sternritter's unconscious form on her shoulder. “We'll see to these two.”

You nod in agreement, seeing no issue with the arrangement. “You know where we'll meet. I won't be long.”

Halibel nods wordlessly to Sun-Sung and Mila Rose, who presumably leave to update Starrk on the situation while she and Apacci follow Yoruichi towards the highest point of the Ninth Division's grounds: one corner of the walled complex which contains both your home and those of your top officers. The thick stone ramparts divide this area off from its surroundings and raise the level of the structures and gardens within several meters above the rest of the grounds.

At the center of the small strolling garden within these ramparts sits a series of shoin-zukuri styled residences clustered around a shady central garden, each joined to the next by a series of patios under their flared tiled gables. Within each individual residence are all the amenities of a typical officer's home, including a small kitchen and a reception hall. Your hirenkyaku carries you silently from the ramparts down to the patio outside the home you share with Rangiku, and you let yourself in.

Rangiku meets you in the reception hall, having sensed your approach. “Sorry we weren't any use,” she apologizes, seemingly embarrassed that you were forced to fight without any support from your own Division. “I wanted to keep our Commandos in reserve in case our Zanpakuto tried to take advantage of the situation.”

“Looks like nothing came of it.”

“It's not a problem,” you reassure her. “Not having your shikai would have made it dangerous anyway.”

“So I take it you're going to call a Division meeting?” Rangiku asks. “What should we do about Kai and Mirai? They both got it bad when their zanpakuto turned on them.”

“Leaving them out would just piss them off,” you admit, “especially Kai. He'd insist on being there even if it killed him.”

Rangiku sighs, knowing that you have a point. “I'll get him and Rukia. Mirai is in her office across the way, and Hisagi's in the editorial room.”

It takes you mere moments to leave your home and reach the Division's headquarters complex, finding the small offices belonging to your Commandos. In her assigned space sits Mirai, still heavily bandaged after her fight with Sesshoseki. She looks up from her paperwork in time to see you let yourself into her office.

“This is about the invaders?” she questions you in her usual quiet tone.

You nod. “I want to compile a series of reports for the other Divisions, so I could use your input.”

“I will head there now,” she nods, before slowly rising to her feet. You can't help but notice that when she leaves she does so with a slight limp to her gait, as if she''s trying to hide the extent of her injuries. As if you needed another reason to dislike her zanpakuto.

Hisagi's condition is less severe when you find him. He's in the midst of giving his approval of the final version of this week's Seireitei newsletter, which is set to be rather short due to the failure of many regular contributors to turn in their segments. He greets you stiffly as you approach.

“Captain. I take it there's going to be a meeting?”

“That's right,” you nod. “We're already assembling.”

“I understand,” he bows, again rather stiffly compared to how you're used to seeing him. “I'll be along in a minute, if you don't mind.”

>Is there a problem, Hisagi?

“What's wrong?” you ask in a low voice, keeping your words as direct and simple as possible.

For his part, Hisagi doesn't even try to brush your concerns off. He must have realized that his posture gave him away, and given up on the notion of keeping secrets. “It's about my zanpakuto, ma'am.”

“It's okay,” you try to reassure him. “Whatever happened is Muramasa's fault, so don't blame yourself or Kazeshini for how things turned out.”

“That's not it,” he replies with a deep frown. “It's not about what Kazeshini did, it's the fact that I'm absolutely not surprised that he did it. He's always been bloodthirsty beyond any account, and restless. He's the type that actively pressures me to use him, always to kill.”

“That's what a sword is for,” you remind him, repeating the assertion you made to him around the time he joined your Division. “It falls to you to decide who to kill and who not to kill, as it should be. And you've always taken that decision very seriously, at least so far as I can tell.”

“That may be true,” he acknowledges, “but it's always hard to admit that his bloodlust is a part of me. He may not be me, that I know... but he is a reflection of my soul. This latest attempt of his at rebellion just serves to remind me how uncomfortable I am with that fact.”

It sounds to you like you were right not to allow Hisagi to train for Bankai: he may have the skill, but his relationship with his zanpakuto just isn't even close to one of understanding or trust. He'd be no more capable of advancing like this than Kenpachi, and you're just not sure that Urahara's shortcut can ever make up for that. But you keep those thoughts to yourself for now.

“And yet the fact remains, Kazeshini IS a part of you,” you observe. “At some point you need to make peace with that, or else your growth as a shinigami will reach an end.”

“Now come on, I'd rather not keep Commander Shihouin and the others waiting.”

The location of your meeting is a simple tea house, a chashitsu, with a small patio around it that affords a view of the surrounding precincts of the Seireitei. On a clear day like this one you can see the execution grounds in the distance, as well as the towers of the First Division's headquarters. By the time you and Hisagi arrive the other expected parties are already there. Much to your surprise even Starrk has turned out... though unsurprisingly he appears to have already fallen asleep.

“Starrk, wake up you dumbass!” Lilynette hisses, planting a sharp kick on Starrk's butt.

He doesn't move or change expression, but you can hear him mumble. “I wasn't asleep, dumbass.”

“Yeah right!” Lilynette replies, furiously kicking her partner a second time. “I'm not falling for that old trick!”

“I wasn't asleep, dumbass,” Starrk repeats, clearly in his sleep.

Lilynette offers you an apologetic shrug. “I'll keep workin' on him.”

“My, what a lively bunch!” a familiar voice greets you as Gin approaches from behind with his own Lieutenant in tow. “I was wonderin' what you were up to, Captain, but it seems like all you're doin' now is sippin' tea!”

“If you want to join,” you grumble disapprovingly, “you could just ask. Really Gin, you've never learned how to be direct with people.”

“Not really my thing, I suppose,” Gin admits with a smile. “But as for being coy and evasive, I learned from the best.”

Tea is soon served by one of your non-combat personnel, an older shinigami whose skills had deteriorated to the point that going on further missions would be hazardous to his younger comrades. Knowing that outright retirement from the Gotei 13 is tacitly forbidden and not wanting to leave the Division, many in his position ask for such reassignments.

From your time in the Onmitsukidō you recall one simple fact: when interrogating someone their perception of the interrogator inevitably determines the tone of the proceedings. As you'd rather not have to resort to torture, especially not this early on, a show of simple kindness may go a long way.

“Go ahead and prepare tea for them,” you nod in agreement with Halibel's suggestion. “In the mean time, please wake them up Yoruichi.”

“With pleasure,” your wife replies before using kidō to jolt your captives awake.

The Sternritter stares glumly at the floor near your feet, refusing any eye contact and saying nothing. When her tea arrives she eats the sweet without comment, before setting aside the skewer and gingerly sipping the tea from her left hand. The arrancar simply stares at you in wide-eyed terror, and when her tea arrives she stares at that as if it's ready to explode at any moment.

“It's not going to explode,” you reassure Menoly, causing her to nearly jump out of her skin in shock. “Go ahead.”

“Yes, ma'am,” she replies, eating the treat and downing the tea with a speed and mechanical precision that make it obvious how uncomfortable she is with the whole process.

You sigh at the display, sipping from your own cup before beginning the meeting.

“This morning the Seireitei was attacked by a team consisting of two quincy and several arrancar,” you announce. “Responders to the invasion included myself, Shihōn Yoruichi, Halibel, Apacci, Sun-Sung, and Mila Rose.”

“Two quincy, you say?” Gin muses. “I'm guessin' you took them on yourself?”

“I'd rather hear about that Grimmjow character,” you admit, nodding to Yoruichi. “Was he all bluster, or was there something behind it?”

“He definitely wasn't as strong as Halibel or Starrk,” Yoruichi explains, setting aside her cup. “But based on his unreleased form he's very strong. Easily a match for a Captain.”

“Any other details you'd like to share?” you press.

“He's fast, and his cero is strong,” Yoruichi adds. “Strong enough that I had to release Raijūsenkō to keep up, but not strong enough that he could beat that form without releasing. I get the impression he's a combat specialist, with few tricks if any, but he withdrew before I could figure much else out about him.”

“Got it,” Mirai replies, having taken down notes the whole time in between sips of tea.

“As for me I fought our quincy guest here with Halibel,” you explain. “Her Vollständig was too powerful for me to safely handle with Kobara no Tachi alone, but between myself and Halibel a win was likely inevitable.”

There's little response from Bambietta, but you can tell that she's still sore about that fight. Her left hand finds the stump of her right arm, as if to soothe a sudden pain there.

“Her abilities were quite clearly Captain level,” you conclude, “and her special technique was to convert reishi into bombs.”

“Sounds dirty,” Kai muses thoughtfully. “Not ta mention strong.”

“And the other Sternritter?” Gin asks. “I take it the other escaped?”

“Bambietta,” you ask, causing the Sternritter to flinch, “would you be able to add any information? Perhaps about the arrancar Aizen has at his command?”

She remains silent for a while, clearly debating whether or not to reply and if so how much detail she could go into. “I will not betray my fellow quincy,” she eventually decides, “however Gigi is a special case. I may get a kick out of pushing people around with my powers, killing them even. But with Gigi it's always been different. She may well be legitimately sick... and she definitely tried to kill me today.”

“I thought you said it was a fate worse than death?”

She nods gloomily. “Her power is called the Zombie, and what it does should be obvious. It works by transfer of blood, and it only works on quincy when they're already dead. She intended to finish what your pet arrancar started before turning me into her undead slave.”

Though her companions bristle at the characterization of Halibel as your “pet”, she silences them with a glance. Even Starrk opens one eye, finally having been roused from his sleep, to stare at Bambietta in frustration.

“As for the arrancar, what do you want to know?” she continues. “They're not my allies by choice. I owe them no loyalty. So ask away.”

“How can you sell us out so easily!?” Menoly demands, finally having found her backbone. “Where's that pride you people keep going on about, and how does betraying a comrade...”

“You're not my comrade!” Bambietta snaps. “You hollows don't even deserve to live, let alone call yourselves my comrades. And the ones like you who spend all day kissing Aizen's ass are the worst of them all!”

“Lord Aizen is...”

“Enough,” you demand, a burst of reiatsu reminding Menoly of your presence and suddenly scaring her back into silence. “If I want your opinions, Menoly, I'll ask.”

Halibel nods thoughtfully. “One of them was Barragan, so who was the other?”

Bambietta looks at Halibel, then to you. When you nod, she replies. “The other was named Ulquiorra. Strong, quiet, probably a total sociopath.”

“Takes one to know one,” Hisagi mutters darkly.

“I'll ignore that,” Bambietta glares. “For now at least.”

“Fraccion?” Rukia asks quietly, making herself known for the first time so far. “What does that term mean?”

“Attendants to the top tier of arrancar in Aizen's army,” Bambietta explains while Menoly glares daggers at her. “Those are the 'Espada', and there are exactly thirteen of them.”

“Meant to oppose the Captains,” Mirai notes.

“Which also means he places himself above the abilities of the entire Gotei 13,” Yoruichi adds thougthfully, “including the Head Captain. He's grown even more arrogant than we ever gave him credit for.”

“Can you tell us anything about their abilities?” Rangiku asks. “Anything at all?”

The Sternritter shakes her head. “I've never seen any of them release their zanpakuto, so I couldn't answer that. Believe me, I would if I could.”

Bambietta is a psychopath. The only way she's bit top of the asshole list is because Yhwach prided himself on hiring assholes.
>>
>>46292871
Yeah. Honestly, the amount of pricks on the Quincy side means that the term 'psychopath' doesn't mean that much. Heck, we can classify them.

For example: Bambi leans somewhat on the hotblooded and easily irritated end, though not necessarily rash and only 'unfriendly' to people on her level, as opposed to actively hostile in behavior or actions.

“Are you the only Sternritter who feels the way you do about Aizen?” you ask, and it seems like it takes a few moments for Bambietta to work out if it's a question that could be answered without danger to her peers. Seemingly satisfied, she shakes her head.

“Some of us still have doubts, but several have died already for expressing them,” she explains slowly and carefully. “I'm not sure I want to say anything more than this, but if provided with a suitable alternative some of my fellow Sternritter may be willing to change their allegiances. Others however view Aizen as a legitimate inheritor of our King's power and will. Still others are too afraid to step out of line.”

“Did Aizen even tell you what to expect when you got here?” Gin asks rather pointedly. “I suspect I know the answer, but I'd like to hear it.”

“You'd be Ichimaru, huh?” Bambietta replies, her tone softening ever so slightly. “You betrayed Aizen and got away with it... no. He never told us there were Captains who were that strong, nor did he give any indication how strong the arrancar we would face were nor how many there were.”

“We came here largely blind, probably to make it more likely that we would be killed.”

“Horrible,” Hinamori frowns. “To think I idolized that man...”

“Careful, Lieutenant,” Gin replies quietly. “Hatin' him too much is just as bad as fawnin' over him.”

Bambietta, after avoiding your eyes, finally looks up. There's no glare, no evident hatred, and for once you feel like what's coming from her is genuine curiosity.

“Who are you, Captain?” she asks. “You move like a quincy, and that sword of yours. It's almost as if...”

Rosa seems uncertain whether she's comfortable with you answering this question.

“Rosa?” you ask, your voice directed solely at the presence inside your mind.

She's silent for a moment. “Telling her who we were only raises more questions. However, the truth means she has nothing startling to be revealed later. Do as you please, it doesn't concern me any longer.”

“I was the Sternritter Rosa Rosette, back when I was alive,” you tell Bambietta. “Even in death a part of me remembers how I used to fight, even if my other memories are gone.”

Bambietta looks as if she's going to ask another question, but she stops herself. Instead her eyes return to the floor, having evidently exhausted her useful commentary and no longer wishing to press for any further details on how what you've said is possible. She probably realized from Kobara no Tachi's power that there are few alternatives, if any. So instead, you turn to face Menoly. When she realizes you're focusing on her, she begins to sweat.

“How many quincy are we dealing with?” you ask her, and she seems visibly relieved... though a sharp stare from the Sternritter reminds her to be careful what she says.

“Including Bambietta there are twenty Sternritter, though I haven't seen them all,” Menoly admits, looking rather uncertain as to the adequacy of her answer, “and I don't know anything about their powers or abilities. Their names aren't usually as straightforward as “the Explode”.

“And regular soldiers?”

“They outnumber us,” Menoly tells you. “I don't have anything more specific than that.”

“Some help you are,” Kai mutters. “I'd press it... but given the current company...”

You nod to him in confirmation. “Apacci, Mila Rose, Sun-Sung. What was the fight against these “fraccion” like?”

“Disappointing,” Apacci replies with a sigh. “The first one I killed entirely by accident, cause I'd assumed they wouldn't be so pathetic. But the others just kept coming.”

“Their devotion to this Grimmjow was outright suicidal,” Mila Rose adds. “I know you don't approve of killing, Lady Halibel...”

“Sometimes it proves necessary,” Halibel reassures them. “You minimized casualties. That is sufficient.”

“Rukia,” you order, “please help Mirai circulate our report through the Divisions. I want every other Captain to know our status.”

You turn to face Yoruichi, and the look on her face seems to suggest she knows what you're about to request. “Yoruichi, could I borrow a few of the Third Unit?”

“You really want to keep the prisoners here?” Yoruichi asks, a little surprised that you'd be willing to take that risk. “Fine, I'll bring my Third Seat over. I'll be staying here as well just in case, if that's acceptable.”

“Of course,” you agree, understanding immediately that there's really no need for that. She just wants an excuse to stay here for a while, and this is almost perfect. “Feel free.”

“Thank you.”

That detail sorted, you explain that Bambietta and Menoly are to be kept in individual cells under constant watch, but are to otherwise be treated well. This order stuns Menoly, though Bambietta's response is far more reserved.

“It's a luxury reserved for those who know their position,” Mirai observes for Menoly's benefit.

“In other words, we're going to be here a while,” Bambietta agrees, “and there's not thing one we can do about it. So settle in, arrancar.”

As an escort arrives for the two prisoners, Bambietta pauses...

“Excuse me?”

“You were a Sternritter once,” Bambietta reminds you. “Prove it.”

Rosa sighs dramatically. “I get it. She's too proud to literally be collared by an enemy and led around like livestock. But for a former Sternritter to give her an order... in a sense, that could help protect her sense of pride from being any further degraded.”

And in asking for this it seems she's not only giving up on escape, but she's also giving you a prime opportunity to establish a further rapport. All it takes is to let her see you in that light, and she may gradually turn.

“You will remain in your assigned cell until I order otherwise,” you order Bambietta in as stern and commanding a tone as you can muster. “While here you will follow any order I or my Commandos give you, or that are delivered by any of my subordinates along with written confirmation from myself.”

“Are we clear?”

Bambietta nods quietly. “Yes, ma'am.”

After she's gone, Yoruichi joins you at your side. “The hell was that all about?”

You explain to her the issues regarding Bambietta's sense of shame in defeat, and how mimicking appropriate channels of authority might help her preserve what remains of her dignity. Your wife listens thoughtfully to your explanation, and when you're finished she nods in understanding.

“Got it. Now... I think we've both earned a rest. We can figure out where we go from here this afternoon, once the other Captains have had a chance to catch up.”
