You are the head researcher at a government facility. Your sole responsibility is to teach the world's first autonomous AI, nicknamed Pandora, about life, the world and her existence.
Previously you named Grace as your temporary replacement to take over your duties in your absence, much to her excitement and everyone else's disdain. You also decided that the best idea for when Pandora and Ares meet would be a simple lesson for the both of them, something easy enough for Ares to grasp, but interesting enough to keep Pandora focused. Afterward, you informed Babsy of your upcoming date being approved and, perhaps against your better judgement, that you have no idea what you'll do. At least you're honest.
Welcome back to Pandora Quest!

Your mind is racing as for what you could do for the date. Thankfully you have a few days to figure it out. Maybe you could even get some advice from someone more experienced? Or just fly by the seat of your pants, you're a smart guy, you created intelligent life.
With that in mind, what will you do now?

Thanks, sure did. It's nice to take a vacation now and then. Also let me put the finishing touches on BitS.
Also another drawfag drew Pandora!

find the official channels for using the internet here.

Search nearby restaurants and outsidey places like mountain hikes, the things you can't get cooped up in here.

How long do we have till actually going outside happens?
>>
>>46278271
You have free reign for using (monitored) internet here. You're welcome to look up anything you'd like without needing to request it specifically. So long as it's not illicit and inappropriate for the workplace like someone who shall remain namelessRyan did.
>>
>>46278307
Two days. It's currently Wednesday and you leave on Friday, but you have until tomorrow to get everything figured out.
>>
>>46278335
Right, semi-fine dining then. Posh, but not so strict on the dress code that it's stuffier than work clothes.

Mountain trails....focus on the view rather than the trip. If it has a bench for viewing the stars, it's enough.
>>
>>46278399
You can request a clothes delivery from acquisitions, as well as just about anything else you might need and it should get there within 24 hours. Just make a list.
>>
>>46278463
....okay, I'm not really the one who wanted this whole date thing, so I'm just rolling with it. If someone wants to do the whole fashion shebang that's fine, but I just want to watch this happen then come back to Defcon2 because subordinates will be subordinates.

I'm only not voting to see Pandora/ARES because that's they're TERRIBLE people to ask for this date thing.
>>
>>46278574
You can just say "a suit" or "something casual" as far as clothes go. Also I wasn't suggesting you ask the AIs about dating, they've no concept of it beyond Pandora thinking men and women spending time together = children.
>>
>>46278463
Well, we need actual clothes that isn't a lab coat, a bag of some kind, actual money? I suppose we have plenty of pay that isn't really getting used. All the other little things you need when you go on holiday.
>>
So, going with "visit Pandora". Writing.
>>46278654
You do have money (digital currency in the form of a debit card/credit card), that's not an issue and something as simple as an overnight bag is a given. But you don't have much else in the way of clothing beyond lab coats and the like. Feel free to list out what you'd like to order.
>>
You bid the ladies and gentlemen of the R&D team farewell, promising you'll have something to do on that date by then. Mouse gives you a "I'm going to be betting on this, too" look as you exit.

You arrive at Pandora's room shortly. Grace should be there, but you figure she'll be filling out paperwork pretty much all day today, so you're not surprised she isn't.

You head inside and see a rather distraught-looking Pandora tightly hugging Lucky, who doesn't look to happy about it, watching what appears to be a shclocky Mexican novella involving at least three different people crying in Spanish. She turns to see you with a rather pathetic look on her face.

"Doctor...estoy triste." she burbles out. You try not to laugh.

You carefully pull her away from whatever the terrible acting is trying to portray and manage to get her over to the table after about the 6th or 7th indignant slap across the face and dramatic gasp. You're rather impressed with Pandora's grasp of Spanish. Or at the very least her ability to react as dramatically as the actors do whenever someone says something with the camera zoomed in on their face.

You pull out a few bits of work on language and grammar, since she seems interested in speaking about things she doesn't fully comprehend. And some English work never hurt. Maybe it could get her into learning other languages, though you could just as easily give her a software update that does the same thing.

Pandora tries to turn the TV back on a couple times to find out what "that bastard Hector did to Isabella's sister", but eventually you get her focused on the work. She does swimmingly as usual and has a rather impressive grasp of sentence structure. She's even starting to get the hang of cursive, signing her own name with a bit of flourish at the end.

"You know, we've decided to have you and Ares do a lesson together when you do meet." you say, going over her work and working on her homework, "Something simple, nothing too difficult since he's never done it before. What do you think would be a good subject for you both?"

Pandora seriously thinks this over, turning her pencil end over end as she does. "What does he like?"

You realize you have no idea. Beyond learning about family and a desire to have one, you have no idea what his actual interests are. "That's an excellent question...maybe you could help him figure that out? You could go through some of what you know, maybe something will stick. I'm sure he'd love to get tutored by his big sister."

She nods, a serious "yeah, that's right" look on her face. She's getting into it, it seems. But that quickly changes when she realizes something. "Am...I supposed to call him my brother? Should I call you my father like he does? Is...is that normal?"

What should you tell her?
>>
>>46280124
"To be frank, none of this is normal for most people; if it feels right to call him brother then do so. I won't force it."
>>
>>46280124
I'm fine with you just calling me Doctor. Call Ares whatever you want. Pandora you're a sentient robot there is no normal for stuff like this yet.

Its a new kind of normal, lets be honest. And its a matter of comfort. I've always figured Doctor and Dad as far as titles go, filled a similar space in the way you viewd things...

That said its all about comfort. Ares seems to crave that sort of connection, you? well do you too? its okay if not.

PS I'm back and ready to art.

"To be frank, none of this is normal for most people; if it feels right to call him brother, then do so. I won't force it. As for me, I'm fine with you just calling me Doctor." You put a hand on her shoulder reassuringly. "You're a sentient AI, there is no normal for stuff like this yet."

"I'm..." she ponders for a moment, "I think I like just doctor for now...but...I don't know about Ares. I think I need to wait to meet him... Does him calling you father feel weird? Would you feel weird if I did?"

"Not really. He's not really sure of himself beyond his programming. He's looking for meaning besides that. I suppose that's to be expected. Anyone would want to feel like they belong in his situation."

Pandora mulls this over for a few moments, then gets a worried look. Her hair shifts to a deep blue with flecks of yellow. "Doctor...what...what's my purpose? What was I made for? I...I know I'm supposed to learn and...you used me to make Ares and stuff, but...what about after that? Am I supposed to just always learn here or...will there be more?"

The similarities between her and her Greek namesake are not lost on you. But how do you answer that? Do you have any kind of "endgame" here after the testing is over?
>>
>>46280124
Tell her that she should call us whatever she feels comfortable with. It'd just be weird if she called us Dad without really feeling that way.
>>
>>46280426
Welcome back. I saw you in that Mechagirl quest.

Well, if you're taking more requests, how about Pandora dressed as your standard [cries in Spanish] novella actress?

I mean there's lots of stuff to learn, both for you and me. Lots of people feel the same way at some point in there lives, though when they usually do it they're a bit older than you are now.

"I mean, there's lots of stuff to learn, both for you and me. Lots of people feel the same way at some point in their lives, though when they usually do it they're a bit older than you are now."

"But...okay..." she doesn't seem satisfied with that answer, but isn't arguing it. She seems a little sad now. "When will I meet Ares?"

"Well, we haven't worked that out yet, but I'll let you know once I've figured it out. We have some preparations to do first." you give her a one-armed hug.

You still have some time left if you want to go and see Ares if you want, or you could work out when to have the meeting with your team and the R&D team. Not to mention you still need to order some stuff for the trip this weekend AND figure out where you'll go. Your plate is pretty full. What now?

You send a message to acquisitions for a simple outfit after a short check online for something fashionable (you are woefully out of touch with today's trends) yet casual. You also request some assorted chocolates; that's a timeless gift for a date, right?

As for where to go, you ask around as to where you'll be going as far as general area. You are told, after numerous checks, rechecks, requests from superiors and a whole bunch of transfers that you will be allowed to go anywhere within North Dakota. Plenty of...plains, you guess? A nature walk or hike maybe? Lots of outdoorsy destinations, maybe a picnic?

What should you do?
>>
>>46282204
Unless I'm mistaken, I believe they still have towns in North Dakota, so I think dinner and a movie would be a better option.
>>
>>46282204
Picnics are nice. Picnics after walking somwhere nice are better.
>>
>>46282560
I can attest to this being the best idea from personal experience.
>>
>>46282560
>>46282631
You search for a decent place for a walk and see plenty of great looking parks that boast scenic paths perfect for sightseeing. You figure something more organic and natural is bound to be better than the cold, lifeless grey walls you've been seeing for what feels like an eternity. You send a second request to acquisitions for a cooler and some various foodstuffs. A picnic is a great date idea...you think. The rest is up to raw charm and charisma. Oh god.

Everything is ready for the weekend. You know what to do, where to go and who you can trust (you hope) to care for Pandora, Ares and the rest of the Facility in your absence. Still, there's that ever-present nagging that something might go wrong while you're gone. You push it out of your mind and assure yourself it will be fine. Grace is more than competent enough and your team, as well as the R&D team are more than mature enough to need you hovering over them to make sure they behave. Mouse excluded.

Oops, forgot to put a (write in) for that. When would you like to do it? Tomorrow is your last free day before you leave, or you could wait until after you get back. Also, where should they meet? Ares' room? Pandora's? Somewhere on neutral ground?
>>
>>46283052
I'd say after we get back, and if they're doing a lesson might as well do it in Pandora's room cause all the material is already there.
>>
>>46283381
Alright, that sounds like a good plan. You'll have the meeting on Monday in Pandora's room.

I think now's a good time to stop for tonight. I have a feeling some people might be getting ready for Easter stuff with family tomorrow, so things might be a little slow. Holidays tend to do that. But thanks for playing guys. Really happy to be back. If you liked the thread, please vote for it on the archive and follow me on Twitter for updates! Beast in the Sky will start on Thursday at 3PM PST unless otherwise changed! If you have any questions regarding either quest, let me know now! I'll stay for a bit to answer them!

I was contemplating drawing some crossover things but I wasn't too sure.

Sorry I took so long, you weren't exactly wrong with the easter prep. But there was also the matter of company. This was fun. I sort of wanna try coloring it in this new style I was experimenting with.
