Your name is Amy Nakamura, a 17 year old void Oni, and the world used to make sense. Sort of at any rate, more than it does now. You’ve always had this preconception of what a Wizard should look like. They should be tall older men with long beards, the weight of their power and wisdom should weigh heavily on their shoulders and be present on their face.

Okay, you may have watched and read Lord of the Rings a few too many times, but who doesn’t think of Gandalf when they hear ‘wizard’. If not that they should be supremely confident and powerful, just looking at them should tell you that they’re not to be messed with. Basically they shouldn’t be blonde, overweight, overly-cheerful women in their mid-twenties. Christin seems like a nice person (she could stand to get in shape) but she doesn’t seem like any sort of wizard. Maybe your expectations were too high?

“Ah! The tea is finally done.” Christin says as she quickly takes the antique kettle off the burner. “How do you take it? Sugar? Honey? I’ve got pretty much everything.” She asks while pouring three cups. Trish mumbles out that she takes it plain and you quickly do the same. You watch in a mix of horror and awe as she pours a shit ton of honey in hers.

“Ahhhhh. That hits the spot,” She says taking a sip of her tea flavored honey. “How can I help you lovely girls today? You weren’t very particular about what you wanted this meeting for online.”

>Start with the basics, what does she know about wizards and magic.

>What’s up with the city lately? Houston seems to be having a magical crisis (all the monsters showing up, fae in the park etc.)

“Well, miss Klein-“

“Christin, if you please.”

“Er-right Christin, maybe we should start with the beginning? What is magic? Amy and I are tired of running into this stuff and not knowing what’s up. Like this whole week has been nothing but a giant magical mess. If this is going to keep happening to us, I feel like we should know the basics.” Trish says leaning forward in her old wooden chair. You get the feeling a lot of this furniture is hand-me-downs, it’s all very old and European looking. Christin for her part gets a pensive look on her face before settling down into her old, over-stuffed armchair causing the poor old thing to groan and creak. You wince in sympathy for the poor chair.

She stays like that for a minute or two, one hand on her tea and the other stroking her chin like she had a beard. You get the feeling she’s doing this unconsciously, no normal person takes long awkward pauses in the middle of being questioned, right? Suddenly, her eyes snap to Trish and she leans forward, placing the tea on the end table.

“Give me your hand, Trisha. I want to see something.” She asks with an intensity that’s totally at odds with her bubbly voice. Trish glances in your direction, obviously asking you if she should do it. You don’t feel any ill-intent from Christin, but she IS a Wizard (supposedly).

You nod quickly, Trish let’s out a breath of relief and stretches her arm out to the older woman. Christin gently takes Trish’s hand and takes a deep breath. Then you feel it, something moving through the air, but you can’t see it… It’s moving towards Christin. You feel whatever it is move into her as she closes her eyes. She keeps them shut for a brief moment before opening them again. But they aren’t her normal bright blue color, they’re a glowing almost iridescent green.

She’s using magic! You start to feel it leave Christin and move into Trish. You can feel everything that’s happening through the bond, it isn’t painful or anything, only mildly intrusive. As weird as it feels to you, Trish seems almost giddy. You haven’t seen her this happy in a while. You rub the bracelet on your right arm in worry, is this going to be over soon? It’s obviously not bad or anything, but it’s making your skin crawl. Slowly, Christin lowers her arm from Trish’s and closes her eyes again. The strange whatever you felt moving through the room also stops.

Curious

A few seconds later Christin opens her eyes and screws them up in thought as she starts stroking her chin again.

“Interesting, very interesting.” She says as Trish falls back into her chair looking a bit tired.

“What the fuck was that!” You yell out. Christin jumps up and looks at you with a startled expression.

“Oh! I’m so sorry! I don’t know why I did that without saying anything. I really am sorry, sometimes I move too fast and my rational thought can’t keep up.” She says trying to placate you.

“It’s fine it’s fine.” Trish interjects, waving her down. “Amy’s just a bit over protective, there was an incident with a witch when we both younger, it’s left her with a protective streak.”

“Oh I’m so sorry to hear that. I’ll make sure not to something like that again.” Christin says, her bubbliness creeping back into her demeanor and voice. You grunt in acknowledgement of her promise. Hmmmph over protective huh?

“Alright, alright. Just tell me what that was.”

“Well we’re not supposed to divulge secrets like that to normal people. It keeps everything need to know to prevent panic and the like. So I had to check to see if I could tell you and Trisha about magic.

“We’re not exactly normal you know. We’ve seen magic before.” You tell the Wizard, while rubbing your bracelet. Christin for her part just giggles a bit.

“Oh I know dear, it isn’t that simple though. Everyone knows magic exists, some people see it every day, but I’m physically, magically and contractually obligated to keep the specifics from you. We don’t want the details of how magic actually works getting to normal people. It could cause a panic, or make people tamper with things that they’re physically incapable dealing with.” Trish nods at her last statement.

“That’s why you can never find anything concrete about magic anywhere, it’s all speculation.”

“Exactly, we even promote wilder theories to keep people content.”

>>

But I'd say shifting into oni form just to make a point isn't really something Amy, as she's been written so far, would probably do.
>>
You pinch the bridge of your nose and sigh.

“Alright, fine, but why do you guys do that? What’s the point of going through all that trouble to keep people in the dark?” Christin just gives you a bright, but somehow sad smile as she clutches a locket you didn’t notice she was wearing until now.

“It’s to protect them, magic is inherently dangerous. You have to be born able to do use it, it can’t be learned or brute forced. The people who try usually end up killing themselves in misguided attempts after learning the barest details.”

“So what you just did to Trish…”

“Yes, I was checking to see if she had the potential use magic, and she does. It’s not an enormous talent, but given enough time she could be incredibly adept. This also means that I can tell you both what I know, you’ll just have to promise me at the end not to tell anyone.” Christin says, her smile brightening even more.
How can anyone be that happy?

Trish for her part is speechless. She has a disbelieving and yet joyous expression on her face.

“That’s great news squirt, I’m happy for you.” She struggles underneath your hand for a minute before giving up. She crosses her arms and pouts trying her best to not look happy. TIME FOR INFO DUMPING!

Writing.
>>
“Okay now that you know you can reveal this information, let’s start at the very bottom. What is magic?” Trish asks, unable to hide the eagerness in her voice. You don’t blame her, you already have your own kind of power but the thought of learning about human magic is exciting as hell.

“Hahahaha, that’s a loaded question. Hmmm, okay I think I can handle that.” Christin says, laughing at your friend’s earnestness. “Magic is often defined as the ability to manipulate non-physical energy, energy that has no explanation from science and shouldn’t actually be able to exist. Some people call this energy Mana, some call it Æther, my master and I just call it M.E. Magical Energy. This energy permeates everything you see on this planet, the trees, the animals, the buildings and cars absolutely everything. Few people even realize it exists, some people get clued in when some of it accidently interferes with something, like getting a random chill on your neck or a car alarm randomly going off. Magic is the ability to harness this energy and shape it. All beings on this planet capable of it, do it differently than others. Dwarves can use it to strengthen physical properties and other material things. Elves can use it to commune with the remnants of those long dead, and other things they don’t bother to mention. Fae can use it to create pockets of Faerie, their spiritual realm, they can also use it for glamour and other more common things.” She pauses for a minute to sip some of her flavored honey (seriously who does that?).

“What do you mean several ways?” Trish interrupts. You nod along with her question, although you kind of expected Christin to explain it anyway.

“Well the first way is draw the energy into yourself, refine it, shape it and then release it back into the world as what you want. This is called channeling and the people who do it are called channelers, or in more contemporary times, Wizards. I’m a Wizard, if you couldn’t tell by my introduction.” She pauses for a moment to giggle at her own joke. “What I did to Trisha earlier was channel the ambient energy from our surroundings into myself and then use it to “map out” her potential. The second way humans use magic is to generate the energy in their own bodies. People who can do that have natural wellsprings in their body, and they shape it with their emotion or will or what have you. Everyone does it differently. These people are called mages or Sorcerers. Now the third way is somewhat different to the first two, the people who use it don’t have the ability to channel magic naturally.”

“So how do they use it?” Trish interjects. “I thought you said you have to be born with the ability to use magic?” Christin just smiles at her warmly.

(cont.)
>>
>>46258288
“They don’t have the potential for magic, inherently, they have the potential for something else. They can bind the will of beings and spirits from beyond our understanding to channel the M.E. for them. We call these beings Familiars, and the people who use them Witches.” You and Trish both shudder reflexively at the name.

“So what’s Trish? Which way can she use?” You ask, concern creeping into your voice.

“She’s a channeler, a Wizard like myself. Or at least she has the potential to be one.” Christin tells you as she sips on her drink and eats a tea cake that she didn’t offer you.

“So do these different ways of using magic actually influence anything? Like do they do different stuff?” Trish asks, her eagerness to learn more incredibly apparent. Christin just chuckles to herself for a second.

“Yes, there are incredible differences. Sorcerers are unparalleled when it comes to destruction, they can instinctively use large amounts of energy to simply blast things away. Well I shouldn’t stereotype, but it’s true that very few of them can do more delicate things with their magic. Wizards are probably the broadest in terms of skills, they all do something different after all. There’s very little overlap in what we can do, beyond some of the more basic uses. I guess a good example would be a Ward, which is a kind of alarm or trap that a Wizard can make. We can also make links to people magically and dispel ambient magic. Witches are a bit different, their magic is heavily influenced by the kind of familiar they have. A classic example would be a black cat familiar, that kind of Witch would have subtle control over the mind. They all seem to be good at making things with magic though, the old classic Witches’ brew I guess.

"I mean, Christin might just be overly excited at becoming famous for getting her Master's so young, but... I don't know, I'm just leery without a lot more details. Might be wise to at least ask around a little or something."

Writing.

Thanks for playing guys, sorry about the missed week.

No worries, RL happens, and thanks for running!

Do what you do, I've enjoyed the story quite a bit. A little waiting doesn't hurt anyone, work with what you got and all that.
>>
You are now imagining how much alcohol it would take to make Amy hungover, and the looks on her parents faces at the mess from such an event.
>>
You still have some more questions for Christin but those can wait for the moment. You turn to Trish who seems to be seriously considering it.

“Hey Trish, what do you think?” You ask her. She tilts her head down for a minute, sitting in contemplation. You guys have had a huge amount of information dropped on you, on top of what she just told you. You’re starting to like Christin, but there’s just something about her that’s mildly suspicious, you can’t really put your finger on what though.

“Oh, I probably should’ve mentioned this earlier, but trained Wizards can live for hundreds of years.” Christin tells you both with another sunny smile. Your jaw drops. Hundreds of years? You can’t even imagine that amount of time. Trish for her part just looks up and stares Christin directly in the eyes.

A huge smile on her face

And that's it! Thanks for participating everybody. The Archive and my Twitter are in the second post of the thread.

I really appreciate you guys comoing out even after I missed a week. It means a lot to me.

I'll be sticking around till the thread dies to answer questions and shoot the shit.

I've actually got one for you guys though, how do you like Christin so far? I'm I doing alraight with new characters?

I feel like just writing Amy and Trish might get boring.
>>
Completely meta question. Do wizards have familiars and would we technically be one?
>>

I've enjoyed the characterization so far. Its an urban setting so it will obviously have a wide cast. Christin is nice but I feel that its to soon to truly tell. Amy and Trish had some bad experiences in the past with a witch so it seems right for them to be a little wary, even if she seems like a female Mr.Rogers. I really liked the Oni greeting from a few threads ago even if it caused some people to go butthurt over being "rude".

Thanks for running

Thanks for running Strike!

Christin is well written and fun so far, and I hope that whatever's off about her turns out to be aggravating but not something that would make us stop associating with her. There's a lot to be paranoid of in a magic world, hopefully some of it is just shenanigans.
>>
>>46260480
They do not. They can summon demons and elementals but those aren't familiars.

>>46260530
Cool, thanks for the input anon I really appreciate it.

>>46260537
Thanks for playing anon
>>
>>46260549
What's off about her is some of the anon's paranoia from the write ins.

>>46260545
Thanks for playing
>>
>>46260554
....Can they summon Oni?!?!
>>
>>46260588
Probably not, oni are ogres, demons are different. Going by the other oni we met, that Danny that bound us before might have been possessed by one though.
>>
>>46260588
Nope, only beings from another plane of existence.

Oni were created by the Kami of earth to serve them and by extension japan.
>>
>>46260636
Alright, my brain juices are running low. Thanks again for running and have a good night!

>>46260657
I think you meant to thank SZ here >>46260650

They aren't technically Ogres, it's just a way for ignorant gaijin to describe them easier.
