You take a tray of eggs, what must be two dozen or so of them scrambled up.

“You wouldn't have to eat that much if you'd just get back in the sword where you belong,” Renji raises an eyebrow as Monkey and Snake each help themselves to double-servings of porridge and sausage.

A loaf of toasted and buttered bread on a second tray balances on your forearm.

“Oh, you're still here?” Snake pretends to notice Renji for the first time before turning his back on his former wielder. “Go away, you're bothering me.”

You have one of the chefs start piling bacon on top of the eggs. The man looks at you as he forks three or four strips at a time, as if expecting you to tell him when to stop. You don't do so until you have thirty strips or so, causing the line behind you to start backing up before you give him an “okay” gesture with your free hand.

“You heard the kid,” Monkey agrees in the meantime. “We're through with you, so quit wasting your breath.”

A pot of coffee sits unattended near the end of the line. You take it and try to find a place to sit down.

Ichigo and Tatsuki are sitting at a table and talking quietly, with a little space between them. Most of the shinigami in the room are giving them a wide berth, but you see no reason to do the same. You seat yourself between the two young humans in a clattering of trays.

“Did a farmer owe you money or something?” Ichigo asks.

You leer at him menacingly, in a combination of misplaced frustration and exhaustion. “You what now?”

“Nothing,” Ichigo replies warily. “Forget I said anything.”

When Renji and his sword spirits sit across from you, it takes Ichigo a moment to process the scene. “Ah, Renji! I didn't know you were in Riku's Division.”

“I'm not,” Renji replies through his toast.

“And isn't that Zabimaru?”

“It is,” Renji grunts.

“How could you even consider that!?” Renji demands.

“ENOUGH!” you roar, slamming your fists on the table. At the sound of your voice the entire mess hall falls silent, and Renji and Ichigo jump in alarm. “I am eating right now. So until I finish my meal, kindly piss. OFF.”

“So those things that attacked the Division headquarters yesterday were zanpakuto?” Ichigo concludes after Renji and his swords stomp off in opposite directions. “What ARE you gonna do about those three?”

“Until Yoruichi gets back to me with the results of her archival search, nothing,” you admit, finishing off your first pot of coffee with a slurp. “The last thing I'd want is to accidentally deprive Renji of his better half.”

“So what should we do?” Tatsuki asks, looking around at the unusually empty dining hall. “Seems like a lot of your Division are out of the fight for now. Are the other Divisions this badly off?”

In fact, they're mostly worse. The Ninth's individual fireteams fared better on average than other units, and the fact that your squads not only have field medics but a permanent aid station on the Division's grounds means that even the wounded will be back in the fight soon enough.

“Well,” you sigh as you lay aside the silverware after finishing your colossal breakfast, “I guess I need to assess how much of a risk keeping you here's going to be, don't I?”

“How do you keep that figure when you eat like that?” Tatsuki muses quietly as she suddenly realizes that yes, you just ate enough breakfast for ten or twelve people in a matter of minutes.

Ichigo gets up from the table and begins making his way out of the mess hall. “Yeah, I guess so. There someplace out of the way?”

“Of course,” you scoff. “This is a military barracks, of course we have a training ground. Just follow me.”

The Ninth Division's barracks have frequently been called “park-like” by visitors and residents alike, for good reason. The kitchens and main dining hall are located behind heavy, stone-clad ramparts in the same area as the Division's offices and official headquarters, along with the printing press and aid station. This nerve-center of the unit is a tightly packed and bustling spot even at this time of the morning, but even so there are a few shinigami taking a break in the small gardens tucked between the individual buildings. You lead Ichigo and Tatsuki out of this complex, past your subordinates who greet you formally, and into the “outer gardens”. Here, within a much more expansive barricaded grounds, are the barracks for your lower-ranked shinigami. What they lack in size they make up for in their surroundings, as they're distributed seemingly at random around the gardens, each having a unique view from their wrap-around patios.

You head for the training grounds, a gravel-covered empty space beside the headquarters complex, to find Zabimaru and Renji still arguing. Other than them the place is pretty much deserted, as nobody else really has the time or cause to be out here right now. It'll be a perfect place to see what your nephew's really made of.

His question is cut short as your folded haori hits him in the face, and you re-tie your sash over the keisen uniform you wear beneath it. He looks down in surprise as you place your silver hair ornament on top of it, along with your wooden prayer beads.

“You're really making me hold your stuff?” he sighs, exasperated. “Captain Kuchiki may have been right about you after all...”

“Quit mouthing off,” you shoot back. “My own Lieutenant is busy, so I'm entrusting you with these until I'm finished. I'm sure Byakuya's taught you about the basic etiquette we Captains are expected to observe?”

“I see,” Renji replies, still unamused but apparently able to understand your reasoning. “Fine, but don't expect to make this a habit.”

“Why're you taking off your jacket?” Ichigo asks, unable to follow the train of the conversation.

“This is a personal fight,” you explain, tying off your hair behind your head. “I want to see how my nephew has grown. A Captain shouldn't wear their Division's symbols of pride when engaging in a fight like this.”

“You really are like Byakuya sometimes,” Ichigo observes, unwrapping his zanpakuto and settling into a low defensive stance.

“You take that back!” you demand, hirenkyaku bringing you instantly into punching range.

Your fist strikes out, parried quite well by Zangetsu's blade as Ichigo tries to push back. But you have the mechanical advantage, your bastardized version of Blut preventing the blade from biting into your skin as you push it out of the way with your forearm and hit Ichigo under the ribs with a right hook. To your shock however he takes some of the impact out of the blow by using the cloth wrapping of Zangetsu's hilt to slow your fist. With a twist of his arms he's got your wrist entangled, and he follows up with a sweeping kick towards your ankles that you just manage to dodge.

A flick of your middle finger sends a shockwave at your nephew, blasting him back through the air and freeing your wrist. Ichigo for his part lands on his feet and slides back in a spray of gravel.

“Good,” you growl, “but you'll have to do better!”

In an instant you're on him again, and he uses a shunpo to sidestep you, swinging Zangetsu in a powerful arc behind your back. This attack is far stronger and more intensely focused than you've ever seen from Ichigo, and you're fairly sure your blut won't be able to stop it from slicing your back up. Maybe non-lethally, but still quite messy.

“Shunkō!” you declare, wrapping your back and arms in powerful reiatsu as you turn to elbow Zangetsu out of the way and throw a punch that Ichigo barely manages to block with his hilt. The force of the blow throws him off his feet again, and he shoots a few projectiles as he grinds to a stop to keep you from pursuing him too closely.

The way he's learned to fight with Zangetsu's shikai with this degree of creativity and coordination... you almost hate to admit it, but it may not all be bluster.

“Tenkotsuki's not coming out,” you explain, “but Rosa's still in there. You really sure you want to fight against my Resurrección?”

“I don't think he does,” Rosa taunts, despite the fact that only you can hear her. “And I'll admit I don't really wanna fight either. Not for a training exercise.”

“Scratch that,” you correct yourself. “She's not really feeling it, and I have to agree. I'm not going to release her against anyone I don't intend to kill.”

“You just did that thing again,” Ichigo sighs. “Whatever. I don't see the point of us sparring if you're not gonna...”

You press your fingers against his chest. “Sajō Sabaku.”

Even weakened, your bakudō is sufficient to pin Ichigo's arms at his sides before it even registers that he's under assault. A powerful uppercut sends him sailing as he tries to undo the spell with some success, but not nearly quick enough. Hirenkyaku brings you behind him in time to dropkick him back towards the gravel below, and you draw a triangle in the air with your fingertips.

“Shitotsu Sansen!” you call, sending a trio of yellow reiatsu fangs after him. He manages to roll on his feet to dodge two of them, but the third slams into his shoulder and pins him to the ground.

“Checkmate,” you mutter, dashing down towards him with a massive overhead blow ready.

Reiatsu gathers around your downed nephew as he strains against the bindings.

“Bankai!” he shouts, black reiatsu erupting all around him. You backpedal to get clear, abandoning your attack until it's clear what his capabilities in this form are.

When he's visible again his outfit and sword have changed: he's gained a black haori with narrow sleeves, and his sword looks more like an ordinary katana. On closer inspection it's jet-black with a red and black handle, and it has two blades extending parallel to each other from the hilt.

As nonchalant as you're trying to act, however... it's clear that this new form is a massive improvement in his reiatsu. Even Rosa's release doesn't increase your reiatsu this much, so as things stand fighting this Bankai will be a struggle.

The brat's power is obscene for his age. You can see why Byakuya lost.

This calls for a different approach.

You know that Yoruichi has been working on a new version of Shunkō for some years now, and you're at a point where you may well be able to do so as well. So rather than maintaining its efficiency, you pour more energy into it. The resulting form may not be something you can maintain as long as Sōkō Shunkō, but this is the only real way forward that you can see.

“Forcing your reiatsu higher?” Ichigo muses. “Not enough.”

Were it not for your blut being active as a part of Shunkō that may have been a disaster. You throw a punch and Ichigo simply isn't there. It's not even Utsusemi, which you use to avoid his counterattack, he was just that fast.

Even more power goes into your aura of reiatsu as you strain with your own technique. The weight of it all is immense, and you start to compress it until with a massive shout some unknown threshold is crossed. The reiatsu collapses in on itself, and the strain lessens.

You might forgive Tatsuki for thinking the result looks underwhelming, because her spiritual senses aren't fully refined yet. This nameless version of Shunkō clings to your skin like frost, trailing little wisps of steam as if it's sublimating against your body heat. And then it hits you: an overwhelming sense of numbness. As you draw your swords from their sheaths your fingertips can't feel their grips, your arms have no sense of weight, and your legs feel strangely heavy.

“That's new,” Ichigo comments, standing off at what he judges to be a safe distance.

“Rangiku,” you begin calmly, “please send out a general announcement that we have eight arrancar here along with a quincy. Presumed hostile.”

“Did you say...” your daughter replies in surprise before she plainly feels their reiatsu for herself. “I see. On it.”

“That was underwhelming,” the first quincy comments. “I expected more.”

“What the hell, Grimmjow!?” the black-haired arrancar demands loudly. “You knew she couldn't win.”

“Yeah, I did,” Grimmjow replies. “The two of you don't belong here, so at least she's out of the way now.”

“She could have died!” the smaller arrancar protests, until Grimmjow silences her by grabbing her by the collar of her skimpy uniform.

“Get in my way and I'll kill you both,” he grumbles. “We clear?”

Before the other arrancar can reply he slings her into the same wall. The impact isn't as vicious as that of her friend, but she's still left stunned on the ground.

"Like I give a shit," Bambi retorts, producing a Chinese dao from the reishi around her. "They're just arrancar. As far as I'm concerned we've got too many of them as it is."

“Told you,” Rosa adds.

So she's not willing to play ball with you? Too bad. You give Halibel a subtle nod.

“Shunkō!” you cry, propelling yourself at the Sternritter and slamming a foot into her gut as Halibel completes a sonido. Bambi's blut takes a lot of the impact out of the technique, but it can't stop the massive transfer of momentum. Your foe is sent reeling through the air as Halibel completes her own technique, opening a garganta to Hueco Mundo. As you and Halibel intended, she passes through the portal with you hot on her heels.

A second blow to her chin keeps her momentum going, cutting short what was no doubt intended to be some withering criticism of your fighting ability. The third blow comes from your fist as it connects with her sternum, knocking the wind out of her and propelling her down towards the sands below. Another blow, and another, chaining together to keep Bambi hurtling towards the ground until your last punch slams her like a hammer against an anvil. The force of the impact excavates a massive hole in the desert, plunging you both straight down into the Forest of Menos.

“Flashy, but effective,” Halibel commends you as she finally catches up, having passed through into Hueco Mundo herself before the portal closed. Sure enough, two trickles of blood from the corners of the Sternritter's lips betray the fact that despite her iron-hard Blut some of the battering in fact got through.
