Rioja Five-0 Quest one shot

http://houseanddominion.wikia.com/wiki/HouseAndDominion_Wiki

Rioja, a dusty little colony world that wouldn't have amounted to anything in the grand scheme of things if it weren't located on a major trade lane. With it's atmosphere thick with carbon dioxide, sulfur and other pollutants anyone wanting to go outside would need rebreathers or air scrubbers. Only within the past eight months had it become relatively safe to leave the confines of the sealed habitats without the use of full environment suits.

Despite all that the crazy Baron that owned half the planet had invested a fortune into the place. New cities were being built and old ones reconstructed from the rubble of the previous colony destroyed a few decades ago.

Desperate for any place to flee the distant war refugees had poured in by the millions. Humans, aliens, all bringing with them their own money, cultures and crime. The cities were expanding so fast few knew how to keep up. Certainly the police were overworked despite the Governor pouring resources into boosting their manpower.

With the air above ground still in rough shape most public areas were underground. There were plans to open up skylights in the larger courtyards once Terraforming had finished but for now subsurface malls and shopping centers filled the spaces connecting the residential buildings. Farther below ground were high speed passenger and cargo trams connecting to the industrial sectors and the spaceport.

Things were quiet, weather warnings announced that an abnormally large dust storm had moved in and might cause transportation delays. It was enough to keep people away from the city center. Experience had shown most residents that larger storms would cause traffic jams as cargo handling needed to make use of more of the underground tram lines.

An aerocar with police markings pulled up in front of the planet's main branch of the Banc Sabadell. It was one of the few Terran banks that reliably offered service within the Dominion of the Royal Houses. Plenty of Dominion nobles had made use of it over the centuries whenever it became necessary to go into exile.

Stepping out of the vehicle the police officer looked around, checking for civilians.

"Severe weather alert." Warned a nearby public info terminal. "All Strymon city residents. Sandstorm warning is in effect. Airspace is restricted to emergency services and spaceport operations."

Ignoring the alerts the officer pulled out a bulky looking communicator and reported in.
"Unit 223, site clear. False alarm."

"Copy that 223. Resume patrol."

Rather than getting back in the car the human turned off the device, ripped off the back then broke the processor unit.

Seconds later the front of the bank exploded and a pair of armed men rushed through the conflagration.

"Oh my god." The officer muttered under is breath then waved the robbers towards his vehicle.
"Get in you idiots! Did you have to use explosives?!"

"What?"
"Just get in!"
>>
Soon the car was speeding through the upper level access ways reserved for the military and emergency services. Using a few tunnel connections and access shafts they reached the larger cargo tramways within a minute.

"Timing is looking good."

"Let's just hope there are no issues at the Choke."

The Choke as it was referred to be the locals was one of the busiest and most congested cargo tram lines between the residential and industrial sectors of the city. Delays in construction had resulted in work crews and vehicles clogging four of the eight lines as additional infrastructure connections were finished. Directly or indirectly it was responsible for most traffic congestion in the city.

"Let's just hope our timing will let us through and slow down pursuit."

The man wearing the police uniform flipped through several displays and cursed.

"What? Is the choke backed up worse than normal?"
"No it's clear, no construction. There's room to drive tanks through here if the cops want to."

Somehow the police and PDF weren't on them yet and they passed through the choke making good time.

"Maybe the countermeasures are throwing them off better than we thought?"

Arriving at one of the empty cargo storage facilities near the spaceport, the driver brought the car in towards a parked Raider craft. A woman was waiting next to it, arms crossed with impatience.

"Let's go. Cops are already talking about closing down the spaceport. Dee, lose the uniform." The woman instructed once the others had exited the car.

While closer to a starfighter than a shuttle the Raider was still more than capable of getting them into orbit. This one had been fitted with ECM which should keep the spaceport from detecting them.

After lifting off the Raider sped down one of the other tramways outbound towards the industrial sector.
"El, how is our window?"
"The freighter is leaving dock on time. It doesn't look like they were able to stop it. Surface access is still open."
>>
Turning off and entering a siding the pilot quickly found the open access point and pulled up. They were just in time to see the blocky form of a Kavarian Y-type transport rumble past overhead, having just lifted off from the spaceport.

Now that they were above ground grains of sand from the dust storm pelted the small craft as it matched speed with the much larger cargo ship. The intensity of the sand barrage dropped off once they entered the larger ship's airstream. Repulsors were helping it cut through the atmosphere to reduce drag as it gained altitude and headed for orbit.

"I looks like the storm and ECM shielded from all ground sensors. Bring us in to dock."

Their pilot acknowledged and brought their small craft in towards the ship's topside.

Besides their main container block, many Y-type freighters were equipped additional passenger compartments along the ship's spine, or docking space for smaller ships. This one had retractable shuttle landing pads perfect for concealing their Raider.

With the protective airstream landing was simple enough and soon the pad was retracting, doors beginning to iris closed above them. In the seconds before they had closed completely another ship flew past, dangerously close to the freighter.

"What the hell was that?" asked Dee.
>>
Aboard the Frigate that had just passed them the Captain's voice blared over the intercom.
"All combat teams, we're tracking a Y-Type transport that our perpetrators aboard. Prepare for boarding action!"

You are a member of the Rioja Special Response & Investigative Unit. This elite taskforce is dedicated to keeping Rioja stable and secure, ready to combat any terrestrial and extra-terrestrial threat that the Police and Planetary Defense Forces are unable to handle on their own.

Looks like you're Human.

Originating from the planet Earth (despite conspiracy theories saying otherwise) Humans struck out into the stars over two thousand years ago. They make up the majority of the population of the Terran Alliance of Confederated Systems but are not confined to those worlds.

Found in nearly every part of known space and adaptable to many environments, they're less able to survive atmospheric differences than Kavarians.

>Choose your background.

Rioja belongs to House Jerik-Dremine, a largely human dominated member of the larger Dominion. With an existing human population refugees from Terran colonies have chosen to flee here. These people are watched closely for fear they may promote democratic reforms beyond what the House will tolerate.

Refugees from other Dominion Houses have fled the wars as well choosing to settle here. While not under the same level of suspicion, there are concerns they may try to help the cause of rival Houses.

House Jerik-Dremine is doing all it can to settle their own colonists to maintain a majority demographic on the planet. These people are strong loyalists of the House, and while the government might trust them more refugees are less liekly to do so.

With power base of many former Pirate Warlords of South Reach slowly fracturing many of their best people are leaving to find work on their own as private Mercenaries. A merc with a good record is respected but most would question their dedication to a cause besides money.

Your Marine grade vacuum rated body armor shows a pale blue stripe below your unit insignia identifying you as a mercenary. With the face plate polarised It's next to impossible for anyone to get a look at your face.

The Deck officer walks over and kicks the cargo crate your feet are propped up on.

"Combat teams, onto the shuttles, let's go! That means you too new guy. Mercs, I swear you have to throw a pack of charge cards for them to get moving."

Heading aboard you take your seat next to a woman kitted up with a repulsor rifle and custom optics.

You're barely strapped in when the ship's bay doors open and the assault shuttle launches into the thinning upper atmosphere.

The trooper turns to you. "You're new right? I'm Gwen MacGowan. What was your name again?"

"Nope, no last name. Don't officially have one. I don't know if someone at the census office spilled some coffee over my last name or if they where just bored and decided to mess with my files. South Reach isn't exactly known for it's record keeping.
The good news is it also plays hell with the bureaucrats making it harder for them to tax me."

"Don't worry, they'll catch up with you eventually. The tax office always does."

Checking the external feeds you watch the shuttle come in to dock with a small access airlock on the ship's central hub. It should be possible to reach most areas of the ship more quickly from here. The added passenger compartments painted in desert pink look to have been taken from another ship. It's going to add plenty more area for you to search and may add the complication of civilians.

You've selected your class as Generalist.
You can carry a maximum of 2 rifle class weapons in addition to grenades or can switch a rifle class weapon for a pistol class to carry more ammo. Choose your loadout:

Would have resumed sooner but my neighbours decided to have a fight at 3AM that required police intervention.

You grab a Reynard Rifle M just in case it turns out these guys have real armor then load up the rest of your kit with stunning people in mind. If there are civilians present you don't want to be responsible for collateral damage.

Six flashbangs and three re-usable stunpulse grenades are enough.

For the hell of it you throw on a forearm grenade launcher.

You see Gwen grab a few halfmoon breaching charges.

Team one is the first aboard. They have a four man team but yours is short at the moment only having the two of you.

"What do you think?" asks Gwen. "Deploy here with the others, or go aboard somewhere else?"

"We should board back towards engineering."

"Good idea. If they try to hijack the ship we can cut their sublight engines or FTL."

The shuttle detaches once first team is aboard then docks at another access point near main engineering.

"Sure." you reply.
Better safe than sorry, and another team member couldn't hurt.

Shortly after boarding the transport you're joined by the new specialist, James.
"What is this, the all Human party?" You wonder aloud.

Heading for main engineering you switch to secure team coms.

"Hey Gwen, is it okay if I call you Police Girl?"
"Why would you call me that?"
"We'll we're in a special police unit and you're anatomically female right?"

Gwen thinks it over before responding.
"I feel like if I agree to this I'll be falling for a joke I'm not aware of. So no."

Reaching the doors to engineering you call for a stop.
"They likely did not just land on some random civilian vessel. There are likely accomplices among the crew, or the suspects are part of the vessel's crew to begin with. Don't let your guard down."

"How are we going to do this?" asks James.

Time to act official. You're paid to do this shit and have done more than a few customs inspections in your career.

Hitting the door button the three of you enter. A few Humans, Kavarians and Dro'all seem to make up the crew here.

"Customs inspection." You calmly inform the nearest crewman. "Need to see the chief engineer."

While you're lead towards one of the older looking engineers Gwen adjusts her optics, looking at each of the crewmen in turn.
"I have two people that are showing signs of elevated stress levels. One Kavarian and one Human. They look like junior crew."

They could be involved, or they might just have had bad experiences in the past. And there's always the possibility of simple work related stress.

"I wasn't informed of any inspection." says the chief engineer.

>How did you want to play this? What say?
>>
>>46105294

>>
>>46114574

>>
>>46114574
That's why it's a random inspection. I'd rather be sitting on my ass reading a magazine but we got orders to perform a random search of this vessel. So everyone stand down, line up and turn out your pockets. Oh wait my bad police girl! What's the procedure I forgot!

>>

Doesn't have a criminal record that the government of Rioja is aware of.

"I wasn't informed of any inspection." says the chief engineer.

"That's why it's a random inspection. I'd rather be sitting on my ass reading a magazine but we got orders to perform a random search of this vessel. I wouldn't worry about it, happens all the time, but no matter what though we are preforming this inspection.
So everyone stand down, line up and turn out your pockets. Oh wait my bad, police girl! What's the procedure I forgot!"

Gwen glances in your direction, probably considering a suitable response to your antics but instead tries to move things along.
"Could we have a moment alone to explain the situation? James, keep an eye on things."

You, Gwen and the Chief step into a nearby office.

How much do you want to tell him about your real reason for being aboard? You could go the completely open route or a more need to know and ask about suspicious activity among his people.

Or did you have other questions for him?
>>

Gwen goes through the usual customs check list then asks about any resent strange occurrences both before and after launch."
"Nothing that I'm aware of. Power levels remained good through launch. You really should talk to the Captain."

Then the two jittery crew members are brought up.

"One is a new guy, picked him up a week ago. The other I'm considering firing. He's a bit of a clutz and has next to no skill at anything."

Before either of you can ask for more details on how they were hired you're interrupted by a report over of the unit coms.
"This is Team 3, we are under fire!"

Team 3 is farther forward closer to the bridge. It will take some time to get there unless you call for the shuttle.

Do you want to continue to investigate the crew here, head forward or do something else?
>>
>>46116390
Mate. Seriously? Mate. Seriously?
>>
>>46115732
So in-case you are particularly naive random searches aren't common, especially with heavily armed response forces, so that would leave one to believe this isn't random. Also whether one is involved in the details that could justify said response force to search their vessel would be a particularly important question to you. So to be brief i hope we would have your full cooperation, especially as you and your crew would not want to be accessories to any sort of behavior that would end up with you in a supermax cube? No?
>>
>>46116417
Stay here Team 1 is a lot closer.
>>
>>46116417
Well sorry but duty calls. Cuff and/or stun them in a room and lock it, then disable engines and head on up to support.
>>
>>46116474
Team one is indeed closer. I feel though that if we detain these guys and disable the engines (the reason we came to engineering) that we can move up and either support or cover the search area that team 1 was just clearing. We can get statements later. Make sure the two jittery guys are extra secure.
>>
>>46116417
Team 1 can respond to their help while we quickly settle these two guys. Just see if they panic then detain them for further questioning if needs be and then go help the other guys.
>>
>>46116544
Indeed, don't forget to disable the engines though. Is probably just as simple as turning them off and locking out terminal and bridge access. Would suck to have to do all this on a fleeing ship.
>>
Had a bunch of stuff written but it was garbage so here we go.

>>46116450
>random searches aren't common, especially with heavily armed response forces
"This planet gets crazier and more heavily armed each time we visit. I wouldn't have been surprised to see a boarding team with plasma cannons."

You shrug. "Alright, play time is over. One of our teams are under fire so we'll need you to either cut power to the engines or let our specialist do it."

"I'll need to contact the bridge."

"After we have control of the engines. Meanwhile let's see if those two crewmen panic then detain them for further questioning if needs be. Maybe we'll even have time to go help the other guys."

How do you want to try and scare either of them into action?
>>
>>46117458
Just stun pulse all of the and handcuff them for later questioning.
>>
>>46117458
Aggressive interrogation on the spot. Lots of loud voices and arm waiving and implying they are criminals and bad shit is going to happen. Either they will deny having done anything, confess or panic. Either way we detain them for further questioning

You double check that your phase rifle is set to stun then walk over to a point in engineering where you could have a clear shot at either of the two suspects.

"Attention please. This ship is harboring the crew of a raider that docked mid-flight. We have reason to believe they are engaged in terrorist activities including the bombing of a bank. There are rewards for information leading to their arrest or elimination.

Does anyone have information about the raider that docked with this vessel after departure, or those aboard it?"

One of the suspects look like they're about to bolt but eventually thinks better of it.
"I- look I, may know some things. I didn't know they were terrorists!"

That's the new guy that had only been on the ship a few days. The other one seems just as nervous as before.

"Is anyone else working with you?" Gwen asks.

"I don't know. I was just supposed to move some cargo in a few days then I'd get paid."

"Shut down the engines." You tell James before moving in to drag the conspirator away.

Bit distracted. Got other stuff to do.

You're taking this guy back to the shuttle for protection. James meanwhile makes sure that the FTL is disconnected and that the sublight engines are only good for basic maneuvering.

The shuttle is soon docked again and you take the prisoner aboard.

"Does this mean you won't press charges against me if I help identify them?"

"You'll probably get a much lighter sentencing than the others provided they're taken alive."

"I didn't move any explosives!"

Not taking chances you zip tie him to one of the seats. There are weapons and ammo aboard the shuttle, no point in letting him get hold of them.

One of the shuttle gunners are asked to keep watch.

There are scattered reports of firefights from Team 3 in the forward half the the ship. Team 1 is moving to assist and are dealing with passengers trying to flee from the fighting.

Team 4 was dropped on the underside of the ship and have been conducting a sweep of the main cargo bay.

Where do you want to deploy your team to?
>>

The shuttle drops you back where Team 1 had started allowing you to direct remaining civilians and get them into passenger compartments you can lock down. There will be time later to search them to confirm if they were on board when the ship left.

"Team 3 reporting. Confirmed one hostile down. Raiders don't usually hold more than four so three more may be aboard. Pursuing our remaining contact in the direction of the bridge."

The Captain of your unit's Frigate breaks in on the coms. "This is Kymeri to all teams. All hostiles encountered so far look to be human. We don't know if this means they're a group from Terran space or possibly human supremacists but keep an eye out."

So, bonus for ally actions/possibility tree for enemy actions to choose from. You could even roll a dice with percentages for which action the enemy would take (Ie, 1-20 is action A, 21-79 is action B, 80-100 is action C) and let us know the percentages but not what you rolled.

Re-typing. Again. From the start.

“I’m good, get going.”

The others head off after the woman. You consider joking to them about using the medkit improperly but when you're wounded and need treatment it may not be best to waste time.

Sealing the wound and injecting the prescribed dosage of medications takes a few minutes. Soon you're taping the armor closed again and hauling yourself back into your feet. You won't be running anywhere that's for sure, but you can still limp along after them.

Get a cheap laptop or netbook with lubuntu for typing stuff. You can easily buy an perfectly adequate one for around $75. Also works well enough for watching stuff up to 720p. Unless you play vidya or need to use proprietary softwar, windows 10 isn't worth the hassle.

Not much to be done about shift hours, relatives wanting to talk for hours on end, or neighbours waking up the entire building at 3AM and requiring police response.
I lost the previous post when switching word processors and the file didn't save despite me hitting yes to save. But yeah bit be a good idea to get another cheap notebook. The key will be not to drop it on a tile floor this time.

You check on the other civilians. A few are lightly wounded from the exchange of fire and easily treated. It's not bad but one of them is freaking out badly enough they might go into shock so you put them in stasis.

The medkit is running a little empty but you should be fine barring a serious injury. Anything that doesn't instantly kill you or knock you unconsious should be surviveable long enough for backup to reach you.

Team 3 has reached the ship's command module and managed to stun one and kill another of the suspects. Gwen and James chased the escaping woman into the main cargo hold.

Team 4 located a ship in one of the smaller cargo containers being carried in the main bay. A Modified Constellation light transport. On hearing that the woman tyhat shoit you might he headed their way they vented the atmosphere from the container. As a result the woman ended up trapped in an airlock that wouldn't open when trying to reach it.

[ ] Head for the shuttle, it's time you got back to the ship.
[ ] Take a look at that Raider, maybe you can find some spare change.
[ ] With the whole ship and everyone locked down maybe you could collect a few souvenirs.

The job we're doing is probably exclusive enough to pay well. Does our team get to claim salvage rights on the light transport?
>>
>>46127802
>Does our team get to claim salvage rights on the light transport?
Potentially yes. Its registry will need to be checked to see if its stolen or if there are previous claims against it. If everything goes well it can be sold to a friendly company cough RSS cough and the RSRIU will get half half the money.

Unless of course your unit decides that the ship could be a useful asset and people can be spared to crew it.
>>
>>46128010
Well, there's also the raider. That ship should make for a nice bonus.

That's small enough to fit inside the Frigate's cargo/shuttle bays. With it being small enough to fry through Rioja's underground tunnel network the captain will probably want it to be kept for the unit.

Everybody gets paid don't worry. As a mercenary however much of your cash is tied up in escrow which means you need to make more careful decisions.

This has the upside of requisitions knowing you're good for money you put down on weapons you want acquired.

Deciding that it's only fair that you borrow a few items you find in return for the medical aid you dispensed you grab a few items on the way back to the ship. Nothing that will be terribly missed. Quantity more than quality though by the time you're done you figure your pack has a few hundred Seni worth of nick nacks.
Also a pressure suit that seemed to have been abandoned near the bay the Raider was docked in. It was definitely manufactured on Rioja. These things seem to end up on the local black market all the time.
Requisitions will be more than happy to take it off your hands.

With the firefight, the need to have medics look after the civilians and resultant scans that need to be done of the transport and its cargo it's decided to just bring it in to dock at one of the stations in orbit.
Security forces get to work as the last of the RSRIU are pulled off the ship and your unit returns to the planet.

Back at a safe cruising speed and altitude in the atmosphere the holographic camouflage is brought back up.

It was a crappy mission for you personally but it's over and done with. Now is the task of tracking down the leads left by those that were captured and plugging the holes they exploited to carry out their crimes.

Leg properly fixed you're welcomed by the others when you limp your way into the crew lounge where the bartender has brought out the real drinks.

"To another mission, three lightly wounded with no fatalities!"
"Just remember, try not to get shot in the head the next time you take a hit. It's harder to walk off." one of the heavy weapon specialists jokingly tells you.

>Grab a drink? What say?

"I don't know about that, I don't usually walk on my head."
This gets some laughs from a few.

You stick to the light drinks just in case. No reason to screw with your meds and healing injuries just yet. There's still a week's worth of physio to worry about.

"Hey I was saying earlier we should call Gwen Police Girl from now on."

"Are you trying for a friendly fire incident next?" the annoyed sniper asks.

"Yeah man, I think you should maybe hold off assigning nicknames until you've made it through another mission without getting shot at least." suggests the sole Shallan team member.

"They're not going to let us get our hands on the fancy power armor until our performance improves that's for sure." another adds.

"I heard the Baron is spending money like crazy fortifying the Smuggler's Run and preparing for a siege. Imagine if we all got power armor? Recon for our close combat guys, those new heavy power armor with the big repulsor guns for the weapon specialists and medium jump jet for everybody else."

"...there's no way they'll spend that kind of money on us."
"Nah."
"Nope."
"Not a chance."

If I actually get a good story line worked up or if players have a suggestion for one I'll consider running Rioja Five-0 again in the future. Otherwise we'll be returning to regular House and Dominion whenever I can run the next game.

See you then.

That's the starting armor. Heavy Weapon specialists have the option to start off with the heavier chest plate but it weights a lot slowing them down. I suppose a Generalist could still take it but it's not the best when speed is required.

As for story lines? Hmm.....you could always do something with the "tensions" between Terrian and Dominion civilians/gangs that are starting to form on the planet, maybe if they get good enough their reputation could have people ask the Baron or Governor if they could as a special request help them with a situation on their planet (Most likely would be restricted to the smuggler's run).

But yeah you could most likely steal some plot points from various sources for any "filler" or inbetween missions (Everything from Hawaii 5-0 to NCIS).
>>
>>46131194
That's what happens when reading comprehension fails. Also thanks for the thread man.

For a story line how about playing a krath from watcher space out at the front lines of the Neeran War?
>>

Thanks for the thread TSTG.

It's occurred to me that there's kind of a big performance gap between power armor and normal armor. Is there something like an exoskeleton that can assist with heavy loads, remaining relatively cheap and bridge the gap in combat performance?
>>
>>46132160
You could probably mount a stasis shield on a cargo loader frame.
>>
>>46132223
That sounds expensive.
