Just like she said, Hurricane zips down the street, skidding roughly on her feet and stopping just a few inches from you, dust kicking up around you both. She practically rips her helmet off and stows it under her shoulder, grinning ear-to-ear at the sight of you.

You slide on over to an old favorite of yours, one you were never able to beat as a kid.

Destiny Dragoons. The ever-classical story of two brothers, a gang that thinks it's invincible, and a punch and kick button for each player. You point a thumb in the machine's direction.

"Wanna go for it?" You ask softly.

"Well, sure! My big brother always brought me to places like these and would let me play as the 2nd player. Heh, he always used any leftover singles he had for the quarter exchange machines for me..." Her face gets a little more reserved as you actually boot things up though. Whether it's from game face or talking about Masahiro, you can't be sure.

The familiar title screen scrolls up, playing that lovely little intro. Switchblade, the game's final boss, throws your sensei off the roof plummeting to his death, cackling evilly about how the city is all his to control with the Blackjack Crew at his beck and call.

The two main characters, Lee and Bobby, find their master and swear revenge, scrolling down the street on the first stage on their quest for revenge against Switchblade.

You go through the level with a degree of familiarity, punching and kicking the smaller enemies, while letting Makoto strafe the heavier ones so you can hit them in the back. She's so oddly in-tune with you, it's rather uncanny.

"Heh, I always thought the turkeys in this game were more like...I dunno, a big old turd. Is that silly? I was kind of a dumb kid." You say, as the arrow pings for you both to go right.

"I, um. That is silly!" Makoto says, delayed. It was a weird pause, but you chalk it up again to her being focused on the game.

Level after level is crushed by the two of you. While there are many obstacles within your way, you seamlessly crush them. Even the ridiculous platforming levels! And not a word of communication is needed between the both of you.

Finally, the two of you make it to the penultimate boss. Railgun, Switchblade's second in command. His gun was the reason why you were never able to beat this damn game as a kid. It completely ignored invincibility frames and everything! Being a lonely kid who's mom never understood how to play games, you knew you needed a P2 to attack his back while the other player drew fire.

But now, you have Makoto. Casting a glance at her, she looks at you, nodding. She dives in front of Railgun's AK fire, taking the shots while you throw divekick after divekick at the back of his head.

But--

Then he turns red.

This was new. He started a 360 sweep of the screen, firing all around and forcing the two of you to jump. The draw fire tactic wouldn't work now! You both had to alternate divekicks between his rounds, it seemed. Running across the screen, you both kick, causing his sprite to flinch. Makoto wastes no time, pressing the P and K buttons to unleash all her meter to finish Railgun off. He explodes, and the door to the final level opens.

The level, curiously, is just a long hallway. Walking down it, there's no obstacles, and just running water falling down cracks in the ceiling. Eerie.

Finally, you enter the misty boss room.

Switchblade steps down from his cartoonishly high throne, throwing off his leather jacket to reveal--ice hands!?

This just got a lot more interesting and a lot harder already.

He slams the ground, destroying it and bringing you into the depths of his highrise building. With that, the final battle begins.

Throwing lobs of ice shards at you, you both manuever and jump over them. They don't seem excessively hard to dodge, but it seems a little odd at this relative ease. You throw a hit at Switchblade and realize he's not taking damage.

That's a kink in the plan if you ever saw it.

He throws another lob, freezing you in place as he starts to wail on you, before turning on Makoto and throwing another shard. That's when she goes it, with a battlecry.

Well, a peeping battlecry, but a battlecry.

She throws a punch at the shard, sending it back and freezing him in turn. You break free of your frozen bindings in time as well, and the two of you start to wail on it. Just as it begins to shake, you both leap out of the way and dodge his emergent attack.

Thanks to Makoto's bravery, you find out his secret! In no time, you've brought him down to no health, as he satisfyingly falls from the window to his inevitable demise.

, the ending screen proudly reads, in all it's poor typing and syntax glory. You turn to Makoto, pumped up and beaming.

"Wasn't that awesome!? You totally figured out how to kick his ass just as I was gonna..." You trail off, looking at Makoto.

You walk with her slowly to the cemetery, which isn't an incredible distance away. Still, there's enough time to let the early-spring breeze wash over you. It's got a crisp chill to it, but you wrap your arm over Makoto's shoulder, channeling heat to the both of you.

She's still shaken up, fresh tears plopping down her soft cheeks. You suck in air through your teeth and do your best to rub her back as you make your way to those gray, rusty gates. Wind whistles through the metal, eerily singing through the dour yard.

Makoto pushes the gate open and leads you to the lot 'Matsushita.'

There, clear as day, you can see the sole name on the headstone. Masahiro.

Makoto breaks away from your arm for a moment, putting a finger up to indicate you to wait. She gets on her knees at the headstone and closes her eyes.

"...hey, big bro. I'm...sorry I'm late today." She speaks to the solitary stone. "But I was on a pretty fun date, I just...got overwhelmed was all, thinking about what we used to do. I don't like letting Yukari see me cry, cause' of what you said about me staying strong as Hurricane...b-but it's so hard!"

She grips her fists into the grass, grabbing clumps and tearing some from their roots in the earth.

"How is it fair that no one knows who killed you!? A-All you ever wanted was to be a good brother and a hero! And someone took that all away! A-And now Arcadia's just left with me!! The weak, stupid crybaby sister o-of the best hero this city's--"

I knew I was using Hurricane (who's actually my character in my friend's homebrew), but changed her gender to female. Same backstory, but game Hurricane is more competent. I made this Hurricane less experienced to make the audience sympathetic to her, and want to train her or at least help her.

Didn't exactly plan on the waifu-ing, but hey.

Knightmare was planned as the intro fight to make things start off with action, but I admittedly didn't always plan on her being a girl.

I knew I wanted to do the Union corruption story somewhat inspired by the comic C.O.W.L. but the parts with the Avatars was added in Chapter 3 for added flair, a new power source, and to make things more interesting.

The initial idea, in a way, came from watching OPM. I'll be real--I cried during Mumen Rider's big speech, and it just inspired me to make Hurricane in the first place.

Hurricane then inspired me about my love of Henshin heroes, and the whole idea of heroic spirit was always part of me through stuff like Platinum's games and other media.

I always intended for there to be a serious side to this story, we're just starting to get into it now, although the hints were always there. I just hope I can pull it off.

The Phoenix grants you your powers, and can definitely restrict them, but you cannot lose your status as Avatar until you die. The same holds true for the other four. Byakku, Genbu, and Seiryu.

Also, while we know him as Truth and Genbu as Deceit, those aren't the only names we should know them by. Many people have many views. Truth is also known as Chaos and Deceit known as Law by some.

There's also Nature and Technology, or Tradition and Progress. Everyone sees them all differently, and none are totally innocent.

Heroes do exist globally--the reason Paragon Supreme hasn't shown up in a while is because, as stated in the beginning of the Quest, he went over to Europe to talk about expanding the Union over there.

Arcadia is the main focus, being the setting, but there ARE heroes elsewhere in the world. When we get to Arc 2, we may in fact get outside of Arcadia.
