"Kobolds have long since been a race of servants and tinkerers for Dragons and draconic creatures who they claim a desendance from. None truly would admit this, surely not a Dragon who kept them as at best favored servents and at worst a meal. Though some would argue Kobolds have such potential in which a Dragon might not see."
Ah a renegade Kobold, either on their own by choice, banishment from a chief due to some sort of crime or idea that they could overthrow them, or perhaps the last survivor of a rampage of adventurers who stole every bit of wealth. Adventurers had a habit of stealing everything not nailed down.
Though what is the Kobold's main set of skills that helped them survive?
A: Ugrand Darktalker: An Alchemist Kobold who's skills at potion making and other things helped keep other kobolds alive and only survived the attack on his people because he was out looking for herbs for more potions.
B: Lady Darkmantle: A Red kobold priestess who, while outcast from her past tribe due to her mentor fearing she was gaining too much power compaired to her. Her blessed powers from Nine Hells and Abyss grants her powers and possible contacts with evils beyond her race.
C: Vine Leafwalker: A Kobold Ranger and Trapper who had left his tribe long ago to seek out more understanding of the wilderness off the mountain where they lived. Currently his skill with basic combat and primarily his skill with his bow has kept him alive and in the know in his forest home.

Here we go!
----------
Coming back to the warren was shocking to see his kin all dead at the hand of some adventurers. Even his brother who was chief was dead and his head was missing from his body, probably the adventurers taking it as some kind of blasted trophy.

Ugrand was never much of a violent sort, he made potions to help his warren in all ways he could though he had discovered ways to make explosive items to throw at goblins that poked around. He looked at the bodies and dumped them into one of the largest caves that was once a mineshaft that had been worthless in it's construction and collasped it with a bit of a small chitter in a song of funerals...and then promptly went back into his meager quarters.

He looked at his small bed of furs, his desk which was just a flat stone atop two others, and looked at his formula books. Now he had much to decide what to do...

A: Attempt to make the place more of a personal fortress to live on.
B: Leave the grave of his people to whatever might inhabit it and go on the road.
C: Try to find the adventurers who did this! How dare they kill the Darktalker Clan!

Sighing and looking about his home...he knew that he couldn't stay. He would eventually forget one morning that his family was all but dead. He sighed and collected his things, a pack of things to make potions with, iron bottles and glass flasks.

Mostly basic clothings, bedrolls, rations that ended up being poked away in some hole near the mess. Now he picked up his personal purse, a few odd gemstones and coins of the local kingdom that some kobold stole and traded for some rare potions.

Sliding out of the warren he looked about, the canyon where the warren was based was a common trade route though far enough that caravan guards left the tribe mostly alone.

Sliding out into the path, a large walking stick poking the bushes out of his way now looking to decide where to go.

A: Head toward the Orc Mountains, perhaps finding a job for some Orc Lord or Chief.
B: Go south to a Merchant city of humans, most races were accepted and perhaps jobs could be had.
C: Go try finding a cave into the nearby swamp where herbs are more common but fairly isolated.
D: Go north, to the Dwarven Kingdom and cause some havoc for them.

Taking one of the only maps that the kobold tribe had the Alchemist head down toward the south, staying off the main roads as he went. He might not want trouble but he was more than likely to be attacked and killed for no reason by blood thirsty adventurers. Claiming they wanted 'XP'...whatever in the nine hells THAT was.

On his second night, he had to sleep more out in the open when he heard an odd sound coming nearby...he could go investigate but he could also rest and ignore it...

A: Go see what the sounds are.

Sliding through the bushes comes to a larger clearing and a...rather impressive camp. Large tents and wagons full of cages. Narrowing his eyes the Kobold noticed that the cages were filled with different humanoid! Slavers!

Or a prison caravan taking them away. The caravan was lightly guarded, though the men around the fire were talking loudly and that is what was the sound he had heard. He could greet the strangers, perhaps hitch a ride though there were inherent dangers in that.

A; Greet the strangers
B: Sneak into the camp to check out the things in cage.

Sneaking through the camp wasn't terribly difficult for a kobold. With his dark red coloring he blended actually fairly well with the autumn season's trees. Coming closer it showed the slaves were mostly humans, a few dwarves (With shaved beards showing they had greatly dishonored someone in power), a few cages with bound and gagged halflings, and one cage with a small bird like person who's cage was a bird cage that it rested in.

Looking about it seemed that this was more than a slave cart, it seemed to be a prison cart with one of the markings on the back of the wagon. Now a few wheels turned in the kobolds head...

A: Greet the Wardens, and offer your services as an Alchemist to help keep the prisoners alive until they reach their destination.

B: Use a small supply of acid to free a few of the prisoners, perhaps to cause enough chaos to steal what can be found.

Now, you hadn't brought along any lock picks. Those were your youngest brother's thing and you never had much of a habit for them, pulling out a few large bottles of acid and started to pour it onto the heavy locks.

Looking back curiously, the guards seemed half drunk and half asleep. Lucky for you and the prisoners who were waking up due to the hissing and smell of burning metal.

The bird woke up and stared at the kobold, tilting its head and sliding it's door open nodding in thanks before sneaking upwards in the cart. Looking at the other prisoners clearly eager to be freed...of course it would be easier to flee without a huge group...but you could also over power the rest of the guards to turn the tables.

A: Free everyone! Viva La Revolution!
B: Leave with just the bird! Fuck these guys and fly the coup!

The first volley of what was a bomb was actually rather effective on the human guards by the Kobold who was hiding in the shadows of the cart. It was a simple bit, the casing made of rather plain wood with a fuse coming out of it that didn't explode instantly. The guards tilted their drunken heads as it ticked down before the big BOOM happened and echoed through the night.

Others bolted out of tents, another five men and one man with the helm of a commanding officer if his fancy hat was saying anything rushing over where the explosion occured.

He didn't truly make it that far when a figure, a bit bigger than a kobold but not taller than a dwarf jumped onto his back and began squaking and stabbing with a shortsword. The Tengu had claimed a weapon and was quickly making work of the soldiers who still were sleep addled.

Another bomb and more flips, squaking and screams of pain and the guards were dead. The prisoners quickly came up a cheer and rattling their bars as if goading the others to lead them to escape.

Just barely beats the bird.
---------
Searching the remains of the captain's torso, it was more than a little gibbed and stabbed all over from the blade the bird person was cleaning on a rag of one of the private's breeches which now had little other use.

The key was easy to find and the bird turned quickly as the other cages were opened. The dwarves were first, and though they were a little surprised that a Kobold of all things saved them they gave him a good clap on the shoulder and bowed.

"Ah we may not be knowin who ye be Lizard but ye got us in your debts. " One said with a laugh as he went to feel the earth beneath his feet as his brother rubbed his bare face into the dirt.

Next were the humans which needed help getting free. They breathed deeply, a small family. Three males and two females with an elderly half blind one who wasn't as strongly bound. They seemed to look at one another and when the dagger cut their bonds free they seemed all too happy. The elder looked at the kobold, and the oddest feeling over took the alchemist and he tilted his head.

"Blessed be you, Dragonkin." The elderly woman said bowing her head before giving a violent cough. "You saved this old woman from dying in a dirty prison cell or worse..." The eldest male, probably her son helped her steady herself and nodded in thanks as well clearly concerned for the elder's health.

The next were the cages of humans, a few were skinny things. Looking lithe while three were rather buff, built like orcs and perhaps having some giant blood far back into their heritages. Their locks came off and the lithe ones looked at one another and nodded in thanks going toward the fire rubbing their exposed arms clearly from the cool autumn breeze.

The larger men had a different reaction, coming over and kneeling to look the kobold in the eye before offering his hand to shake. The Kobold took it and shook it causing the silent man to nod before he was picked up and placed on the giant's shoulder!

He was brought to the smouldering remains of the fire, which the halflings were stoking back to life. The Dwarves had found the barrels of rather weak beer in the wagons which had surprised and was passing it out to all in attendance. The giant of a man put the kobold down on a stump and stood next to him with his arms crossed...

The bird man was not far away either though in a cross legged stance with the sword he had stolen in his lap cleaning the blade.

"So uh...do you have a name big man?" The alchemist asked, twitching his draconic snout. Smelling the great scent of finely roasted meats out of rations the soldiers and guards had.

"My name Beorn, I am big man who accused of bashing man's head in with ax." He said simply, "You let me go, I owe you much. " He said bluntly nodding a little bit.

The bird saw the beckoning over, and quickly came over with the blade resting in a scabbard at his side with a bow. Accepting it with a stately bow.

"What of you? You are impressive! I haven't seen such impressive blade work what is your name?" The kobold asked as the bird tilted his head.

"I have lost my name, my family has faced dishonor at my name and stripped me of all I have so I was caught fighting within large city to the east. I am alone but now I serve the man who showed me such kindness as you, Small Lizard."

Seems the bird needed a name...interesting enough and surprisingly female tone. Weird...

"Now excuse me you two, I'm going to go check on the others...." Ugrand said simply as he stood from his seat. Beorn staying there and moving to sit on a nearby log but keeping the smaller kobold in sight. Either to protect him or because he didn't trust the sneaky little thing, no one was really sure.

"Ah lookie here at 'our savior eh?" The younger of the two dwarves said, only told by the slightly higher pitched tone distracting his brother from the small lock box he was trying to break open with a large stone.

"Eh?" He asked looking back and tossed the stone back before grinning. "Aye thank ye again me Kobold friend. Got a heart of a dwarf in ye." The elder of the two said with a nod. "Me name is Barnar and me brother is named Argnar. We are o' the lost clan o' Blacksteel." They both bowed and went to pull their beards in the common dwarven greetings but their faces went chrest fallen when they had no beards to tug.

"Aye the damn Bluehoof clan killed our clan!" The younger of the two said hucking a rock into the woods in anger.

"Some folk killed my clan too, perhaps we can speak more in the future. Tell me if you find anything of interest in that box or in the barrels will you?"

"Aye me Kobold Friend, ye will be the first ta know." The elder said as his brother took his place on Bashing duty.

The halflings were next, all of them preparing a meal together as the elder sprinkled something into the flames that looked like some kind of dust muttering to herself as the elder son noticed he came forward to meet the kobold.

"Ah supper isn't ready yet, we have to season it a good bit to make it edible." The halfling said, the kobold nodded though he was more used to rubbing dirt into the food because it tasted so bad in the warren.

"I came to check on your...Family?" He ended it with a question assuming as the halfling man nodded.

"Ah let me say we are the Blackfoots. We..." He rubbed his neck and glanced back, "Well I was training and finished up my apprenticeship at a Academy of Sorcerery."

"When I was called back home due to a skirmish between clans of halfling families I was accused and convicted of..." HE looked around, "Unlawful Necromancy. " He quickly seemed to panic as he shook his head at the kobold's raised brow.

"I was simply trying to help keep my clan safe! Who would miss some old skeletons of no named halflings instead of actual people with still living families!?" The halfling said and rubbed his slick brown hair back and wiggled his hairy toes.

"As for tradition my whole family and I were being sent to the prison together including my mother who had nothing to do with it. I got them all into this mess..." He said sadly.

"I see no fault in what you did to protect your family. Common in my warren for our priests to do. Good for mining and protection when tribe is weak." HE seemed to brighten at those words and entrapped the kobold in a hug...which he returned with a hesitant pat on the back.

The kobold left soon after brushing off some of the seeds and dust of spices from his cloths as he noticed the lithe men poking around the bodies of the guards and dragging them out of the camp. Following them and he saw them throwing the bodies into a small crevice with abandoned and pocketing anything they found left on the bodies. Meh, could be worse.

When they noticed they looked at one another and one stepped forward. "We thank you for your efforts tonight, we owe you a lot. We were...going to be stealing from the local guilds in the east but when we got caught...we thought our short careers were ended." They said nodding with the others nodding in agreement.

They all went back to the camp, into a small set of logs where they enjoyed the fire and spoke openly with the halflings and other humans.

As the night wound down, everyone getting their meals prepared by the halflings, drinks served by the beardless dwarves, and jokes or stories told by the humans the camp was jovial with the criminals as they ate and drank being merry as the kobold thought before standing up on the stump in the middle of the meal clearing his throat which all stopped after a moment to listen.

"I know not what your plans are, to go home or run to some far off place where your crimes will not follow." The alchemist said with a simple nod, "But I know we all have been brought together and now we all are free from the cages and shackles. For tonight...be free and think perhaps what shall occur tomorrow."

The humans applauded lightly at the small speech and the dwarves began singing a gravely tune in their own tongue that sounded like a landslide as the halflings smiled and made merry themselves eating more than any other.

Going to the caravan, and poking around the sacks produced rather curious items. Weapons, enough for the whole guard troop and some extras. A few shields, simple chainmail made to fit humanoid bodies like that of a man, along with plenty of food for a long journey.

The chest on the back of the wagon drew the most interest and opening it up with a deft little motion of his kobold hands nearly made him salivate. It wasn't filled with gold or jewels it was better!

It was a portable alchemy lab! Fully stocked as well to make any potion he could think of! He got one off a merchant once for cheap though it was of horrid quality and missing half the ingredients but this was more than enough to keep him happy.

Also a few lockboxes were found, most of them were closed while others had distinct break marks with little bags inside. The dwarves seem to have put them back and left a note in there.

'Thought we had better be splittin' this Boss'. On it with a little dwarf doodled at the bottom.

Settling down to bed was a simple affair, the famiy claiming the largest tent with no complaints while the others claimed communal tents of the men to share with the kobold who admitedly got the best bed of them all. The bird was the only one who didn't go to bed and when questioned she simply responded.

"I shall keep first watch, and awake another to take second." Reasonable bird as she was it seemed.

The night luckily passed with issue. And the morning air was full of the smell of roasting left over mutton. It tasted better reheated if that could be believed! The others chowed down drinking a light beer, safer than any water in the region.

"So what are all of your plans?" You ask rather bluntly, the others seemed a bit shocked and looked a up. The large duo stood up and made themselves known as the bird did as well.

"We will stay with you Kobold, you saved us and now we owe you our lives. You got us for life." The Largest man said his friend nodding in agreement.

"And I have no where to go, and I shall follow my honor to follow he who saved me from prison of dishonor." The bird said with a deep bow.

"We ain't got no where ta go, so uh..." The elder dwarf said scratching his morning stubble, "Guess we could follow you."

The lithe trio looked up and pointed at the dwarves, "Same boat as the dwarves, if we go home we'll be executed."

"We...need a place to live thats...stable." The halfling said with a nod, the clearly wizardly one. "But...I don't know what to do. So...until we find a place where my family can stay we'll tag along."

Seems the group was more than willing to go with you...as an unofficial leader! Great...you were now chief of a bunch of criminals!

A: Ask the dwarves about this mountainous area. Maybe about a fort.
B: Ask to see if someone knows anywhere you could stay.
C: See if the group could head to the city to the south, seemed no one was from there...
D: Go back to the Warren, make your home grand again!

As much as the Warren sound like a good Idea, don't you think some people are gonna have trouble adjusting to it, like Beorn or Harpy-Girl?

If we're going to be a leader we at least need to pretend to know what we're doing, and at the very least we should know a stable source of food and water around our home. They can make the area as comfortable as they want for themselves.

Hey scale, where'd you go from the last quest you were going to run? Did you end up using those Kobold names I gave ya? Was a shame I liked where that quest wad going but you vanished

Harpy girl is more of a Tengu Girl so she's more the size of a Dwarf or halfling.
Some of the places in the complex they couldn't get Into but that's a minimum thing.
---------
The choice is hard but it makes the most sense.

"I know a place, it is a bit small but is but a days travel on foot, less so if we keep the mules going in that cart." He said muttering a prayer to the Dragon Gods and gods of Magic. "My old warren which...adventurers went into and killed my people."

The camp looked a bit solemn but seemed to agree. Quickly the cart was filled back up, some walking some simply riding. Walking along the road that was fairly empty, the kobold warren was well known but more so the goblin tribes in the region kept the traders away along with a few orcish tribes.

The warren was about as messy as it was before, it's base was a large open cave mouth that was once protected by sentries of different verities.

A: Set everyone up in their private quarters.
B: Set up some kind of camp outside the caves.
D: Arrange the loot to be handed out among the new clan.

We should also consider naming the Tengu, since she(?) seems to have bound herself to our service. Maybe something alchemical or draconic, since I assume we know next to nothing about their culture.
>>
>>46061627
Part of the reason I haven't named her yet is because I figured one of you Anons would think of something clever. Also I'm horrible at naming Tengu because my friend named one who was a pirate who painted himself like a Seagull and simply named him Gull.

Let them know this is not permanent, we just need a good staging area for our next move. Find a nearby city-state and perhaps start hiring out our services, probably leaning towards the neutral side of things, we take money to do jobs, no killing children who aren't actively trying to kill us, etc.
>>
>>46061738
We should totally go into a forest and become this world's version of Robin Hood and The Merry Men, only less arrows and more bombs

"I think we should be good for the things we have in the group so..." The Kobold understood the value of gold and the little shiny things in the cart but didn't care much. Taking the alchemy lab, moved by Beorn who was happy to move everything at request.

The group found their own past items. Weapons for some part, a few bits of hide and leather armor which were claimed rather quickly while the food was placed in the old storeroom that was now empty save for some splinters of wood from old crates.

Each claimed their own general quarters, the largest of the group claiming the old sentries quarters due to them being...past barracks. The halflings claiming your brother's old quarter also due to it's size but also due to it's many chambers for each of the family members.

Unsurprisingly the tengu had claimed the room next to yours, the former room of the captain of the hunting parties. Why she chose that you don't know other than the whole life debt thingg.

The dwarves had claimed the rooms near to the mines which they proclaimed they'd work themselves to see what they could dig out while the lithe men agreed to assist them a little bit...

Speaking to everyone was on the agenda the next morning and everyone...seemed rather relaxed. The largest of the men had to stoop in the smallest tunnels but the main dining hall smelled of good food made by the halflings. Seems they had taken it upon themselves as the head chefs of the region with the elder advising them and hitting them with a large wooden spoon when they stopped serving someone. Getting his own bowl of stew and loaf of bread Ugrand was happy and chatted with them for a bit. Though they had little to say.

The humans all sat on the low stone benches and ate quickly. Enjoying the fine halfling cookie when one of them brought up a good point.

"Ya know, we could probably set up an ambush by the road, or sell our services to make sure people get through this Wild Canyon safe. I think if folk used this way they'd get to Aranal faster which would be better for their trade." Now that was an idea.

The dwarves had taken their bowls and went back down to the mines, large picks and shovels over their shoulders clearly eager to get to work and giving polite hellos and goodbyes.

"Why are you acting like I am...some kind of child in need of guarding?" The alchemist asked the Tengu who was watching sipping at her stew calmly when she placed the spoon down she said simply.

"I am Ronin but you are now my lord. You released me so now it is time I paid you back with my life."

Interesting...

A: Set up some kind of bandit ambush in the canyon.

Let's get an idea of our capabilities first. I am against banditry out of the cave as it has already been swept by Adventurers before though Escort Services wouldn't be a bad way to drum up some money

B. Better to be on the up-and-up, especially when we're vulnerable. Plus, doing to escorting will help scout out new options for a safer clan spot.

If the Tengu is our retainer, we can just give her our name, Darktalker. Or alternatively, I like the name Strix, Greek for owl and harbinger of ill omens.

I'm not sure if someone is searching for the prisoners, so I would suggest to lay down for some time, avoiding especially the road where they were freed. But we need to give the men something to do, perhaps
>B - if we think that they will not be recognized
Otherwise ask the dwarfs if they need wood for their mining and let the men (only the giant men?) cut trees.
