Recently: You're training for your second Elite 4 match.

General rules:

There is a 10 minute voting period after each post. Non-contradictory votes will be combined as best as possible.

Write-ins for all votes are always welcome and encouraged. They may not all make it into the post or be altered to fit in, but I'll do my best to at least try to address the spirit of the write-in.

Very important or contentious votes may be redone in a stricter voting system as it comes up.

Combat involves rolls! Once there's a clear vote winner, we roll for the move accuracy/crit/secondary effect. Usually it's just three 1d100s. Sometimes you can get a modifier from circumstances, so be creative! Add flair, do tricks with moves, mess with terrain, whatever! This is not a video game.

Call me out on a mistake and receive an apology butt or suggestive picture.

Pokemon time!
>>
You reach deep inside. Devon is running his obstacle course, picking up speed. Push! Faster!

Devon, as if hearing you, pushes harder. His lungs burn and legs ache in an oddly satisfying way.

Without realizing it, you’re running beside him. The training room you’re using isn't that large, but it’s large enough. Devon laps you, but you’re not discouraged. You’re giving it your all, and so is he.

You both feel exhausted, but you bulldoze past it.

“YEAH!” You shout. “Come on!” The rest of the world melts away.

You wake up to Devon licking your face. He’s mega-evolved and panting.

“Hey boy. How long was I out?”

He just barks. He doesn't really have a way of communicating time, or even a hard concept, but you know what he means. It hasn’t been long. You wipe your face and notice your bracelet with the little figures of your Pokemon are there.

“You’re pushing too hard,” Dark Kat tells you.

You look up. “I...I'm awake, right?”

“Yeah. So?”

“So...does this mean I'm crazy?”

“Probably. I wouldn't worry about it, though. If I were you, I’d be worried more about-”

You wave your hands. “Ah! Don’t start! No no no.”

“Fine,” she shrugs. “We’ll just leave those worries to creep up on you while you lie in bed at night.”

You get up and scratch Devon behind the ear. He seems concerned about you, but not enough to stop your scratches. There’s no immediate danger “So, what does you being here mean?”

“What do you think it means?”

“You’re a ghost!”

She just stares are you. “What, are you retarded?”

“Woah! Robin wouldn't like that. Also, you’re me, so you know I’m joking.”

She smiles and stands over you. “Got any more?”

“Well, I was going to say that now neither of us will be virgins.”

She laughs and transforms her clothes into a nun’s habit.. “Yeah, now that’s a joke.”

You just look back at her.

“Stop getting turned on, you weirdo narcissist!” She changes back. “Be serious.”

You get up. “Fine. It means I'm more in touch with my issues, and I'm able to confront them in the real world.”

“More jokes,” she laughs into her hand.

“No, I'm serious. I've come a long way.”

“And the punchline is that you believe that. If you just keep going, you’ll get somewhere new, where you don’t have to stuff all your deep dark garbage into the recesses of your mind.”

You tune her out. “Come on Devon. We’re on a roll. Let’s keep going.”

You and Devon finish up your training before heading back. You sleep, shower, eat, and then it’s time for Robin’s match against Cliff.

As you and your friends walk her to the arena, she fidgets. She seems on edge. The faint scent of ozone and gathering clouds aren't helping.

“Hey, why does it smell different when it rains?”

She looks up, then she smiles. “Oh! That’s simple. See, petrichor is caused by...”

You smile and nod. Robin has a bad habit of going way too far into detail about technical terms. You get the general idea though.

“And that’s what causes it!” She seems much more at ease now.

“Thanks,” you peck her on the cheek. “And good luck.”

You’re escorted away as Robin is led into the battler area. You and your friends find a spot in the rafters to watch. You chat for a bit about this and that as you wait for it to start. It sure is taking a long time.

Robin is late.

Why is she late? What’s she doing? She’s standing there, just outside the battle area, not stepping forth.

“Seems like the challenger might be delayed.”

“Chip, I’m seeing her on the camera, just outside the battle area. For some reason, she’s not stepping in.”

Clair sits back and smiles. “Crafty dyke.”

You’ve come a long way, feel like you really know your stuff, but you don’t understand. Is it nerves? She looks okay.

“What’s she doing?” You cave to Clair.

“Stalling.”

“But why would she-” Jeanine pauses. “...The humidity!”

You all look up. The clouds are in that iffy grey area. There’s no worry about rain now, but it could turn.

“So she’s delaying so she can get rain?” Vance keeps his head up.

“She could just use Rain Dance, but she’s not taking any chances. If it’s already raining out, her Rain Dance will have an advantage.”

That makes sense. Cliff is in the Elite Four. He’s probably built a strategy around keeping his sandstorm up. Robin needs all the help she can get. She’s smart, she’s crafty, she’s fast, mentally but she’s not strong. You've been around long enough to know Pokemon take some trains from their trainers.

Still. A Pokemon battle is supposed to be about the bonds between trainer and Pokemon being tested against each other, right? A small part of you feels like trying to win just by rules instead of keeping with the spirit of the competition is maybe missing the point, isn't it?

“I don’t like it,” Vance says. “I know she needs to do everything to win, but it feels dishonest. What’s the point of a victory you can’t repeat?”

“It’s smart thinking,” Clair says. “Robin can’t depend on just brute forcing her way though.” Clair teases you. Her tone makes it clear she’s not seriously putting you down.”

Jeanine hasn't made up her mind. “What do you think, Kat?”

My constant status effect spam and buffing/debuffing the enemy could be seen as "cheap" be some too. What matters in the end is winning with the pokemon you have, and no one getting hurt.

Taking advantage of a situation arising is one thing, engineering it like this dosen't feel right. Is it any different than waiting until someones Pokemon are sick or exhausted before battling them?"
>>
>>46041896
>Pokemon battles aren't just testing the bond between trainer and pokemon - they're also supposed to test each on their own. A pokemon who just isn't strong enough; a trainer that cracks under pressure. If it wasn't raining, Robin would use another strategy, pick at another seemingly inconsequential circumstance until it turned in her favor. This is just using her own strength.

“Everyone has their own style. I can’t really judge.”

“Wuss answer,” Clair smugly looks down at you, folding her arms.

“What! I’m agreeing with you.”

“Yeah,” she says. “And that’s why I’m calling you a wuss.”

“I mean, I’m always spamming status effects, and Robin is a smart trainer that takes advantage of anything she can. If it weren’t rain, it’d be something else. Some trainers lead by being loud and giving confidence. Robin leads by giving her Pokemon the best path forward that she can think of.”

Before you can retort, Jeanine puts Clair in a headlock. “Can’t you be nice?”

Clair struggles and muffles. Jeanine slackens her grip so she can talk. “Can’t you figure out deodorant?”

Jeanine lets her out and smells herself self-consciously. “What? I don’t smell.”
Clair sticks her tongue out. Jeanine goes to grapple her again. Vance just tries his best not to get in the middle of it. You can’t help but laugh.

“Looks like the judges are going to penalize her if she doesn’t take the field, Chip.”

Robin finally steps forward. The crowd goes from chatting to cheering. The match is on.

The ref explains the rules. Like anyone needs to hear them. Then the it’s time to throw out.

Robin looks up to the sky, and does nothing.

Cliff’s first Pokemon is already out. It’s Hippodon. Robin waits the timer down to the last second and throws in Joltik. She uses Sticky Web, Hippodon uses dig. Robin uses Disable, and Hippodon comes back to the surface looking miffed.

The sandstorm rages, but the edges of it fly off a bit as the natural winds pick up.

Cliff takes another approach and has Hippodon trap Joltik with Sand Tomb.

“Looks like Cliff is trying to keep Joltik in the arena.”

Cliff switches Pokemon, not fearing any major damage from Joltik, and has Marowak use Belly Drum. After that, he uses Substitute, the Focus Energy.

Robin’s Joltik uses Giga Drain over and over in vain. Marowak’s surprisingly impressive special defences and Substitute allow it to take her attacks without too much worry. She finally takes down its substitute while Marowak stops buffing itself and goes on the offensive. It charges with Double Edge.

Robin uses Gastro Acid, eliminating his Ability, Rock Head. Marowak collides with Joltik and both Pokemon go down.

“An amazing last second maneuver by the challenger.”

“Indeed, Chip, but that only let’s her stay even with Cliff.”

There are a lot of things going on in this battle, and there are only so many things you can really pay attention to in detail.

Robin sends out Gyarados against Cliff’s Hippodon. The rain starts dripping down softly, but his Sandstorm keeps it from wetting the ground.

You split your focus. You spend the first half of the match watching Robin and her Pokemon as close as possible.

You pay close attention to Robin’s body language as she commands. The way she moves her arms when commanding. She points when going on the offensive, and almost tries to pull her Pokemon back when going on the defensive.

But the thing you notice most of all is her hips. That’s the giveaway. When she has a plan, she sticks her hips out to the side. It really makes her shorts look tight. And look at the subtle arch in her back. You bite your lip.

Jeanine elbows you by accident as she cheers. Robin wasn't using Gyarados at all! It was Zoroark. And in the time it took Cliff to land a solid blow, she had gained the upper hand. Once again, both Pokemon go down.

You keep a closer eye on her Pokemon, now. Zoroark and Ditto have the potentially to really mess things up for her opponents, but it’s ehr Gyarados that you want to learn more about.

Using Rain Dance and Dragon Dance, he’s able to make huge headway against Cliff. You spend a good while watching it closely. However, the arena’s automatic roof starts covering the arena and blocking the excessive rain to keep the audience dry. Gyarados can only do so much. Cliff uses Toxic and several rock moves to bring it down.

Robin looks shaken.

Stomp stomp clap. Stomp stomp clap. “Come on, Robin!” You start a cheer. Your friends join in, then much of the crowd follows.

Robin shifts her weight to one side on her hip, and throws out Sylveon.

You haven’t quite pinned down Gyarados’ ability yet, but you feel you've gotten to know it and Sylveon’s patterns a bit more. Robin’s Pokemon all seem to have similar tendencies. She avoids committing fully until it’s time to spring a trap unless she’s stalling. They all always have an avenue of escape and a way to leap back if things go wrong. You could take advantage of that if you can just watch it a bit more.

“And that’s the match!”

Holy crap! It is! Robin won, having lost 3 Pokemon total.

You all rush down to congratulate her. She just finishes shaking Cliff’s hand.

“Well, I just can’t wait to see what you do next. I haven’t felt a rush like that in some time.”

“W-what about your match with Kat?”

He gives you a nod. “That good. But this was much more my kind of battle. I think you’ll both go far.” He heads off.

Robin’s shaking from the excitement. The crowds are still roaring.

[Well, besides the Pokemon stuff, I was considering a Mutants and Masterminds inspired superhero campaign. You'd basically be the rookie to the Freedom League and have to learn the ropes and save the day.

The other idea was playing as an adventurer is a very stereotypical fantasy land. You and your team would dungeon dive, scout, clear trade routes, deliver packages, etc. Whatever pays the bar tab. The player would be a relative blank slate where you grow your fightan'/magican'/skillan' abilities and gain notoriety.

The other idea was a Star Trek campaign where you command a vessel on the reaches of known space. Diplomacy, anomalies, away missions, broken holodecks, corrupt admirals, and all the other typical trek stuff.]
>>
>>46043772
Sounds like lots of potential, and pretty open-ended each of them. Not all to my taste but probably fun regardless.

Not to discourage you or anything but it kind of has been done before - see Hero Quest Rena.

I gotta admit I have a weakness for fantasy adventuring especially if it still includes /u/, now with delicious elfs, catgirls or whatever cute/sexy non-human race you prefer.

Still, as one anon mentioned, a second Pokemon quest in another region culminating in a World Tournament would be pretty fucking rad.

Rena was a pretty unique take on it, I don't think he'd be in much danger of treading the same ground.

Though a NPC hero who's skilled at talking villains down and throwing rocks would be a funny shout out.

You walk her back to the healing centre.

“Celebrations, then training?” You point to Robin. She agrees. Clair, Jeanine, Vance. They all give the affirmative.

“Alright!”

Robin gets her Pokemon healed up quickly at the Pokemon center. You go over a few ways to pamper your Pokemon. They’ve all earned a lot of praise.

“Robin,” you hear a familiar voice. Your friends all turn to see Violet. She’s wearing her usual large sunglasses and oversized hat to avoid public attention.

“B-b-b-b-” Robin begins to stutter.

Violet simply looks down at her and continues. “You won! I’m surprised. Of course, you didn’t do quite as well as Kat, and Cliff is hardly a skilled trainer, but you-”

“B-b-blow it out your ass!” Robin says with a smile on her face.

Everyone is at a loss for words. Everyone except for Robin. “My Pokemon and I worked hard. Cliff too! I’m not letting you taint that.”

Robin turns around and walks away. She looks lighter than you’ve ever seen her.

Violet finally looks like she doesn’t know what to do or say.

You shrug to Violet. Your simple response seems to dig at her even more as she struggles to find a way to turn this around.

But you’re already gone. You follow Robin, and everyone else follows you.

As you turn the corner, Robin dives into the washrooms, leans over a toilet, and dry heaves. You hold back the small bits of hair that are long enough to touch her face, then help her get out of there before too many people pay her mind. She holds her stomach, having failed to launch anything out of it.

“F-first, we get minty green bubble tea, then back to our place, then we play with out Pokemon, and then we train, okay?”

Robin can’t seem to stop. She’s on fire today.

“Sounds good.”

You do exactly what she said. She declines anyone’s offer to talk about it. “I wanted to do that for a long time,” she tells you. “I know I shouldn’t feel so good about it, but I realized that my Pokemon and I don’t need her approval. We just need each other. If she wants to talk straight, she can talk instead of...you know, what she does.”

You guess everyone has their limits.

After some fun times playing with your Pokemon, sneaking a few kisses and held hands, and play wrestling with your Pokemon, the party has to end.

“Alright,” Vance says. You guys still have three more Elite Four battles to go. We need to train for Emma.”

“Yes sir, coach,” You stand on the couch and lean on his shoulder.

Robin nods. She looks determined, but also more back to normal. The adrenaline is gone.

Darn, it's too late to say Train each other.

We've spent so long training individually, it would really help to get different points of view on our styles. So we (Kat & Robin) could train Kat's way in the morning, and Robin's way in the afternoon.

She can up her power, and we can improve our technique.

Figured it was worth asking about, considering how well Sneasel did.

So, Devon is in.
Aria is a good idea.
Zappy Dan is probably a good idea just in case of Articuno.

Destiny might be worth the risk.

After that, maybe Raistlin.

And lastly, I'm tossing up between Levi and Nibbles.

They're both gambles, but they've both got BS attack.

You'll put a team together and train it specifically for her. It worked for Cliff and should work here too.

Ice is a tricky type for you. A lot of your Pokemon are weak to it. Going just by type, your team for this battle is obvious.

Devon (Houndoom)
Aria (Meloetta)
Leviathan (Gyarados)
Zappy Dan (Magnezone)
Destiny (Kingdra)
Raistlin (Alakazam)

Her team, from what your and your team's research shows, is:

Glaceon
Lapras
Mamoswine
Abomasnow
Avalugg
Froslass
And maybe Articuno.

But maybe you’d be better off swapping someone out. Nibbles for example, has Stealth Rock and a higher than average Special Defence. Trunks has his special move and Destiny Bond if you’re in a pinch. Vlad is fantastic at disrupting and taunting if she’s planning on doing something complicated. She’d never expect Oberon. Fel’s powders might turn the tide where raw power would fail.

You decide that Nibbles would be a better choice in this match over Destiny, and make the swap. You’ll have half a day for each Pokemon on your team, which is plenty, by your reckoning.

Aria (Meloetta)
Leviathan (Gyarados)
Zappy Dan (Magnezone)
Nibbles (Tyrantrum)
Raistlin (Alakazam)

“Alright, Aria, we’re going to work on something new.’

She perks up. She’s ready for a new song, more fighting moves, and to be just as strong as a legendary is expected to be.

“Sometimes power isn’t everything. Fel’s a great example. He’s not as strong as the rest of you, but he’s got enough status moves that I’m confident he could hold his own. Status effects are a great way to get an advantage on your foe.”

Aria seems moved by your reasoning, and eagerly follows your training. She keeps doing it too hard though. Instead of a wide, paralyzing attack, she makes quick zaps and powerful blasts. Eventually she gets the hang of it though.

Levi is next. She roars, but it’s more of a casual announcement of her arrival than her old aggressive approach. She curls around you playfully. Well, as playfully as she gets, anyway.

>>
>>46046151

The answer for Levi is simple. Stone Edge.

For her training, you go over the video from Robin’s match. Her Gyarados ended up taking a few Rock type attacks. Levi gets a good understanding from watching another Gyarados get hit. She sees exactly how it can knock her around, and so she learns how to make it effective.

Levi can be pretty smart, when she focuses and isn’t trying to prove anything. You think Oberon has been a good influence on her. That, and Nibbles looking up to her makes her feel like she has to be more responsible. She learns Stone Edge well.

It’s Zappy Dan’s turn. He hasn’t had a chance to shine in awhile. Of course, he doesn’t seem to mind. He’s just content to float there, minding his own business and thinking about whatever he likes to think about.

You spend the day working on Magnet Bomb. Dan doesn’t have as much practice with physical attacks, and accuracy isn’t anything he’s worried about much before so there’s a bit of new territory for him to cover. You end up running out of target and buying poffins from the vending machine outside. You toss them out, Dan takes a shot, and any that hit the ground get gobbled up by Nibbles.

As the day goes on, Dan leaves less and less snacks for Nibbles. Eventually he just stops missing.

“Good job, Dan. You’re up, Nibbles.”

You spend the early morning working on Rock Slide. Being a Rock Type, he takes to it quickly. While he’s more used to biting things, he enjoys dropping them too. To him, it’s all one big game. At least, it is for now. You’ve seen him when he battles for real, and he’s a determined force to be reckoned with. His track record against larger Pokemon, or Pokemon he should be weak to is great.

You get enough progress in that you also have time to start on Fire Fang. It’s not finished, but you might be able to improvise the rest in your upcoming battle. At least, you’re pretty sure you can.

“Take a breather, Nibbles. You did great.”

The exhausted Pokemon plops down with Levi. She gives him mild, reluctant praise.

What's more annoying than a highly evasive enemy?

A highly evasive enemy with good defence.

And if possible concurrently:

>Flash to lower your opponent's accuracy

Let's be the biggest asshole going.

This is so in character for Kat, and could swing matches when there's no other option.

You’re pretty happy with Raistlin’s current move pool. He’s got a nice mix of moves and solid coverage. His teleportation will really make him something to fear too. You still haven’t used that to it’s full ability.

“Alright! Let’s do this!”

Raistlin fails to show the same level of excitement. That’s okay. You know he’s taking this seriously.

You both work on his speed, and a little on his Special Attack. He flashes around the room.

“Good job, but we can’t always rely on teleportion. The battlefield is always full of surprises. Let’s try that same exercise, but no teleporting this time.”

For what you think is the first time ever, he slumps his shoulders and sighs. But on an intellectual level he agrees and gives it his all.

You’re feeling just as exhausted as he is by the time night rolls around. You can’t believe it’s been three days already. Your match against Emma is tomorrow.

You share some juice, get up, stretch, and walk back to the hotel. Robin, who has been heavily relying on Vance this time around, joins you.

“How are you feeling about your next battle?”

She looks up at the night sky. “I don’t know. But that’s okay. We’ve been training so much that I haven’t had a chance to worry.” She’s smiling. “I like Emma. If I lose to anyone, I hope it’s her.”

You can’t really fault her for that. There’s her dad, her mom, and Geno. Geno isn’t such a bad guy, you think. But Emma is the one that operated on Robin. She’s also a good role model, except for her drinking. Still, pilot, surgeon, and elite four member is a pretty impressive resume.

Somehow you think Robin is going to be just fine. She leans against you, probably thinking the same about you.

Just as you arrive at the hotel, you see Professor Fir. He lights up when he sees you. “Kat! Robin! Wonderful news about Porygon!”

[That’s it for tonight. Next thread should be Saturday. Thanks for coming!]
