Things haven't gone entirely as planned. You can just bet that the slaad had something to do with this.

At the other end of the chamber is a mound of broken rock with the artefact on it. You know because you can feel that, even from this distance, a good two hundred feet away. Wow that stings, get much closer and you'll be getting burned.

And around the pile of rock are lots of earth elementals.

Aboswe is in her natural form, hovering off the ground with black and green magical energies dancing around her.

“You're all going to die down here!” she screams at the earth elementals

You're facing twenty earth elementals that are about 20ft tall; five that are smaller but are shinier and have various protective spells active upon them; and one earth elemental made of ruby...oh great a gem elemental: they usually have a lot of raw magical energy, and this one is glowing really bright!

You need to get the artefact and run out of range of the ward against teleportation.

-I'm sorry Shalra- You say -It's not you, it's me. I hope we can still be friends and that one day you find the sort of girl you deserve- You also send some super helpful tactical suggestions to your friends. Which they promptly ignore and do their own things. Except Anli, good reliable Anli.

-What?- She responds –Shouldn't we be helping them?-

-We should spend time apart- You inform her, and them you begin pulling yourself away from her and reforming next to her.

-Hey wait- she objects “I'm naked!” and then wraps her arms around herself as you throw her some clothes.

“So?” you ask, throwing her some clothes “we've all seen you naked and they're giant chunks of rock.”

“That's not the point!” Shalra says crossly as she quickly pulls her clothes on and readies her sword and shield. Mortals eh?

As you help her dress the elementals start lumbering forwards and your allies do what they do best.

Aboswe yells “that's for crushing my babies!” and a pair of green beams of energy flash out: the two Earth elementals they touch immediately disappear, leaving behind only a tiny cloud of dust each. She gets so protective of her rotting corpses sometimes.

Genesiya starts singing: a harsh, out of tune song that sets your teeth on edge, you wanted cool battle music, not a tune that makes you want to punch her. Several of the earth elementals seem bothered by it, but shake off the effects.

Boosted by Genesiya's other spell, Anli darts forwards, swinging her ridiculously long sword at one of the huge elementals, wounding it.

Ilnesin starts praying to the destructive aspect of her Goddess, wait, does the Saviour even know how to crack heads? Well, whatever.

A blast of magic erupts around the gem elemental and...has no visible effect, no wait, it looks a little cracked, maybe.
>>
Three of the huge earth elementals surround Anli, but she easily dodges their attacks. Five of the Huge Earth elementals hang back, and ten rush forwards. They're not close to you yet, but they will be soon.

The Elders start casting defensive spells on the Elementals rushing into combat: proving them protection against lightning, and some resistance to magic and speeding them up as well.

The Gem Elemental fires a blast of brilliant energy at Ilnesin, who tries to duck out of the way but fails, your link to her mind ends suddenly. When the burning light stops blinding you, you see that Ilnesin is simply...gone. Not even a body or anything. Wow, you just. She's gone. It killed her, that jumped up fucking piece of jewellery killed Ilnesin!

“Ilnesin!” screams Shalra. With your mental link to the others you can feel their anger and sorrow, but none of them are going to let that distract them.

You push your fear and anger away, can't get distracted, plus Ilnesin's a priestess and you're on a mission from your Goddess so a resurrection is guaranteed right? In fact, maybe you should pray and ask for one now, because you might really need her in this fight.

Finally your allies start to get the plans you're feeding into their brains!

“Go grab the thingy!” you tell Shalra “just use some protective stuff and go: we'll keep them from rocking your world.”

Shalra gives you a somewhat sceptical look, but chants a few words to summon a blue glowing aura and rushes forwards.

At the same time a hoard of undead monsters appear in front of Aboswe and charge forwards to make a path for Shalra: bone and stone clashing in a horrible mess.

Genesiya starts screaming out a good tune at last: lifting all your spirits.

You kneel down, you're supposed to kneel when pleasing the Goddess- er praying right?

“Dear Saviour Sireyi” you start your payer “I know I'm probably not on the nice list, but right now I'd really like to offer my body in payment if you'd do one small favour for me...”

Anli takes down her elemental, and starts on another: those she is fighting still can't hit her.

The elementals and undead really smash each other around: Rotting Hulks hack at elementals restrained by Carrion Crawlers and both are clubbed by heavy stone fists. Burning Giants and Fire Wyrms really heat things up but are often caught between a rock and a hard place.

The Elder Elementals blast at the undead with their spells: making Aboswe scream in rage and yell something about siccing 'Boney' on them. Oh please no!

The Gem Elemental doesn't help; dumb thing tries to kill Shalra but some of the Burning Giants step in front of her and get blasted to pieces. Aboswe starts to cast the spell to call that terrifying weird thi-

Ilnesin appears next to you in a flash of blue lightning and says “Nansuj! That's not the way to speak to the Goddess! The angel on call for emergency prayers today was laughing throughout that whole thing! As soon as we get out of here I'm going to give you a thorough course in the Book of Sofia: All six volumes and the advance copy of the seventh (subject to revisions)!”.

Then you remember what Aboswe is doing and you turn your back on Ilnesin: forgetting about her as you fly at Aboswe, grab her hands and yell at her “no, no Boney!”

Aboswe pulls at you “they hurt my babies!” as if that excuses her behaviour.

“So crush them!” you say “but not with that, why not that barbarian guy, or the blue dragon?”

Aboswe considers this for a moment and then says “why not both?” and sets out to do just that. Oh Thank you Saviour, I'll be good, I promise (one day).

Anli and Shalra rush forwards, with Anli fending off the earth elementals that try to grab them.

You can also see Anli starting to burn as she gets close to the artefact, and Shalra yelling at her. You can't hear what they're saying but you imagine it goes something like this:

Shalra: Thank you for saving my delicate and tender mortal body Anli, how can I ever repay you?
Anli: Fear not, for am I not Anli? Mightiest of all Succubi? Why I'll have you know even my brain is pure muscle!
Shalra: You're on fire.
Anli: Curses, if only I possessed the superior intelligence of Nansuj then I would be able to think of a solution!
Shalra: Does that rock look like a slaad to you?

Shalra digs frantically into the pile of rock and holds up the bracelet thing triumphantly, it's time to book it!

Genesiya keeps singing and Ilnesin attacks the elder elementals with a spell: destroying one of them.

Next to the Gem Elemental appears a blue dragon a barbarian king and his guard: they launch themselves at the big red idiot. It responds by blasting several of the guards to bits, but at least its distracted.

The undead and elementals continue to carry on, particularly the crawlers.

The Elder elementals split their focus: some try to trap Shalra in prisons of rock and others try to turn Ilnesin to stone, but neither seem affected.

You are a genius! You've just hit on the perfect plan!

You cast a spell that'll reflect magic, and Genesiya stops singing and instead starts insulting the elder earth elementals and the gem elemental: disparaging their looks, their boulder-sizes, and their mothers.

Shalra comes running back in your direction, with Anlia guarding her behind.

Aboswe destroys another four earth elementals and her undead and the elementals continue their destructive dance.

Ilnesin attempts to destroy the Gem Elemental but a burst of red energy blocks her spell; the light within the elemental dims significantly.

The Elder elementals cast killing spells at Genesiya; exhausting her protection but only hurting themselves.

With Shalra on her way, soon to be in your arms, it looks like the day is won.

No, wait, dammit! Despite Genesiya's best efforts at being an annoying bitch, the Gem Elemental is focusing on Shalra's back, and as you watch the glowing light within it travels down its arms and a a glowing ball of energy appears between its hands, it's building up to something big!

Uh oh, you're not letting it shoot Shalra from behind, no way!

You cast your spell and make sure that any hostile magical energies will wash back in the other direction, thank you so much!

Aboswe calls up more of her undead minions and they swarm the remaining elementals, with Anlia keeping any that try for Shalra off her.

Genesiya flies above the battlefield, attracting the attention of the last remaining elder and the Gem elemental. However they both still try for Shalra; her blue ward of protection gets so thick you can barely see her.

The Gem elementals power fizzles out as Ilnesin covers him in an antimagic field: he strides forward but she's made it big enough that he can't get out of it quickly enough.

The Elder casts some spell at Shalra but all that happens is cracks appearing on its own torso.

And then Shalra is coming towards you and yeeeeouch that hurts!

C'mon!” you yell at them “let's go – the undead can keep them busy!” around you the rock starts to ripple as more earth elementals are on their way.

Anlia and Genesiya need to drag Aboswe with them: she's determined to keep as many of her rotting pets intact as possible.

It's a rather harrowing run through the tunnels and keeping Shalra safe without being able to pick her up and fly with her presents some interesting complications, but eventually you all get outside and beyond the range of the dimensionally locked area.

And before you know it you're on the Elemental Plane of Air.

Uh, why are you here again?

“Because Nansuj” explains Ilnesin when you ask “we need to escape the Earth Elementals: who won't come here. Now give us all a moment to recover, and then we're going home.”

Oh right, yes home. Hang on, you recall this armband thing was once sacred to Shalra's god, is that important?

“Anti-magic zone please” you say to Ilnesin, who gives you a suspicious look, but complies.

You beckon everyone into it and say to Shalra “storytime: what is this thing and why is it sacred to your God – I though old Azastor was all about forgiveness and stuff.”

“Well he was” says Shalra patiently “but he still had paladins and martial servants – after all not everyone wants to be good. And if evil people are determined to do evil, we stopped them.”

“Making sense so far” you say “but this Tears thing still sounds way too violent.”

“A Paladins family was murdered by demons” explains Shalra “he swore vengeance on them and eventually found it. When he died his soul argued with Azastor for weeks about the nature of inherent evil vs choosing to do evil. Eventually The Tears of Altusim appeared in a temple one day and the priests had a vision explaining that it was only to be used in times of great need.”

“Sounds like Azastor caved just to shut the guy up” Genesiya comments.

“So what does it do?” asks Aboswe.

“It's presence harms demons” says Shalra. Yeah it certainly does. Even in an antimagic field it still feels like insects stinging you.

“And it enhances a paladins powers against demons” Shalra adds “more than that, I don't know.”

Huh, interesting. But enough about that....

“So” you say, sidling up to Shalra and draping an arm across her shoulders “Do I get a reward for saving the day?”

As the others all protest you say “hello, brilliant tactical mind here: I saved the day.” You ignore all the naysayers.

Shalra just gives you a wry smile, she's getting used to all of you teasing her by now.

“What did you have in mind?” she asks.

“Oh nothing” you say “a kiss on the lips maybe?”

“With a normal, human-sized tongue?” she counters. Damn, saw that one coming did she?

“Sure” you agree.

Shalra rolls her eyes “Well you did behave yourself when you were pretending to be clothes so I guess I can trust you on this.”
>>
“Great!” you say, kneeling down and reaching to pull her breeches down.

“What are you doing?!” she demands, grabbing at your reaching hands.

You grin at her “I didn't specify which lips I was asking to kiss you on.”

“Nansuj!” She yells indignantly “Nansuuuuu-oh!”

You are Milerna Jalweyen, angel-blooded and born paladin of Konig. You are 9 years old, and are attending paladin training at a church of Konig school.

http://pastebin.com/RE8br4uf

You are on an obstacle course, wearing padded armour and holding a wooden training sword. With you are your friends.

Against you are twenty older boys. You need to take them out to win: the last team tio have a standing fighter wins.

The obstacle course though, that could be really useful to you. You have a small group, they have a big group, you can use that to your advantage.

There's a big frame covered in rope netting that you've practised climbing and crawling through, that could tie up your enemies.

Or maybe the big climbing frame: if you all get up there you'll have the high ground, it's supposed to be like mountain terrain so you should be able to fight on there.

The tunnel complex might be useful: you're smaller than your attackers and so they'll find it harder to move in there.

The trap-trainer has been set up for swinging blades – all made of wood. Fighting in there would be like an open field of battle...except for all the giant blades swinging at you all the time.

And lastly there is a small wooden castle that you've see the other kids attacking and defending sometimes.

Where are you going to fight them?

The larger group of kids start approaching slowly and confidently. As they move you say to your allies “This way!” and dash for the tunnels.

Everyone follows you without a second thought but your enemies don't, maybe they think you're just trying to get away. But as you get close to the tunnel maze you hear yelling behind you, and running feet.

You all scoot quickly into the tunnels: Gilly has to almost crawl to follow you, but everyone else can just stoop down and run.

Soon you're at the central chamber – which is just big enough for Gilly to stand up in.

Outside there's lots of yelling, and people calling you a coward.

“Not bad” says Gilly “but what now?”

“We wait” you say.

“Why?” asks Chesi

“Because leaving the Arena means you quit” says Michael “they have to come in here to beat us, if they get bored and walk off, we win.”

Thomas grins at you “good one Mili.”

You wait, eventually your enemies figure it out too.

“You're all cowards!” some yell.

“You're all stupid!” Chesi yells back.

Eventually they resort to threats “We're going to come in there and get you! Come out and fight fair – you can't guard all the entrances!”

“They're right” says Jenny quietly “they'll probably come at us in 3 or 4 groups, what do we do?”

“Take on each group one at a time” suggests Gilly.

“But then we could get surrounded” says Thomas “maybe we should split up into groups ourselves?”

“Duh silly” says Chesi “that defeats the whole point, we should stick together.”

Outside your foes are having the same debate, loudly – seems they don't realise how well the tunnels carry sound.

Eventually they split into three groups and enter from 3 different directions.

The first group is just rushing in and easily falls into your ambush: You all attack from different directions and force them to fight back-to-back.

With no room to manoeuvre and all being hunched over they are easy prey for all of you and you whack at them with your weapons over and over until they cry out surrender.

Of all your party only Gilly has a problem: being as obstructed as your foes she ends up being tackled over by one and you and Chesi have to rescue her as Gilly's attacker has her by the throat and is banging her head on the ground repeatedly. You're only able to drag him off when Chesi sticks her fingers up his nose and pulls back as he yelps in pain.

“You ok?” you ask Gilly as she rubs her head, blinking.

“I'm fine” she says, leaning on the wall for support, you're pretty sure she's just putting on a brave front.

[Gilly is disoriented; penalties to all rolls]

“Go out and tell everyone you surrendered!” says Thomas to your foes, pointing with his sword. They grumble but start moving towards the exit.

“Now what?” asks Michael.

You listen carefully to the noises in the tunnels.

“One group is at the central chamber” says Jenny “but the other”

“Can't hear them” says Thomas.

“An ambush” you decide “if we rush in there the second group takes us from behind.”

“And not in a fun way” adds Chesi “so what do we do?”

“Hunt for the second group?” Suggests Jenny.

“How about” says Michael “one person goes for the group in the central chamber, and when the second group comes along the rest of us ambush them from behind?”

Hmm, maybe.

“Let's go hunt them out” you say “they can't be that quiet.”

Indeed they cannot. It only takes a few minutes of sneaking around to find them and then you all rush in and attack.

Thanks to the element of surprise you manage to overwhelm them quickly and Gilly is able to fight well despite her injury.

Thomas has worse luck: ending up tripping over and being hit a lot until you come to his rescue.

The second group is retreating, soundly defeated, when you yourselves are rushed by the other group – obviously attracted to the sound of your fighting.

You all turn ready to face them...only for you to see that Chesi is far from the rest of you and closest to them.

“Chesi this way!” you yell, but she is unable to move fast enough and is overwhelmed by the group of larger kids, only....they grab her instead of 'killing' her with their weapons.

The two groups face off in the low tunnels, Chesi is held between two boys.

“What are you doing?” asks Michael.

“All of you, surrender” says the closest boy.

“Uh, why?” asks Thomas.

“Because if you don't....” one of the boys holding Chesi's arms starts to twist it up behind her back “We break her arms.” Chesi gives a surprised grunt.

“That's cheating!” Objects Jenny.

“No” says the boy smugly “that's smarts, well?”

Chesi looks at you and fiercely shakes her head. You know that because of her powers she's a lot more flexible than they think, and can probably withstand having her arms twisted for long enough for you to finish them. But still, you really don't want to see Chesi hurt at all.

Your friends all look to you for leadership, as usual.

“If you hurt her” you say calmly to the two boys holding Chesi “you're going to end up much worse than her.”

“Just answer!” snaps the boy in front of you, stepping closer “are you going to surrender or not?” as he asks the two boys holding Chesi start to twist her arms more and more. Chesi just grits her teeth.

You smile, the boy is close enough now. A strange calmness comes over you as you activate your powers and everyone else slows down.

You lunge forwards with your wooden sword, catching him in the stomach. As his eyes go wide and he starts to double over you hit him on the chin with your sword, you hand beneath the blade pushing it up hard.

The others follow your lead as you charge forwards, slashing left and right.

Everyone fights hard but its up to you and Michael to fight your way through to Chesi: Gilly and Jenny hold their own but Thomas knocks himself silly by trying to leap over a foe you've felled – apparently he forgot he was in a tunnel.

By the time you've made it to Chesi there are tears in her eyes and her arms are bent at angles that would break a human arm. The two boys pinning her down realise you weren't joking when your wooden sword smashes one nose, and then another.

You stand over them, breathing hard. Your mind analytically works out how hard you'd need to hit them in the throat to kill them, even with a wooden sword. They hurt Chesi...

Then a pair of arms embrace you weakly from behind and a familiar voice whispers into your ear “Don't hurt them Mili.”

“They hurt you” you observe coldly, raising your sword.
>>
“You'll hurt me if you hurt them any more” Chesi responds, and then kisses your neck “My Mili doesn't hurt helpless bullies, because my Mili is going to be the best palading ever. If you're the sort of person who would hurt them when they can't fight back, you're not my Mili.”

And just like that the world speeds up again and it's no longer black-and-white kill-or-be killed.

“Chesi” you say, turning to face her, seeing the tears on her cheeks “I-”

Then you hear instructors yelling.

>>
>>46042166
Mili has a strong moral center already, it's just that battle mastery supplants her standard thought process with a hyper-efficient combat machine as a designed feature. I'm struggling to explain it, the best analogy I can think of is being a kind of controlled rage state with a variable objective driving it rather than mindless anger (Protect Chesi, in this case) that doesn't have a step between "kill" and "don't kill" - and hurting her friend (and current ward) that badly definitely puts them under kill. When she grows up, she might be able to control it better. Maybe. I mean, her mom almost took out her dad's eye in a sparring match due to it, but she was using it as an innate and untempered power then too, don't know how controlled she is now.

Chesi just isn't an aggressive person in general, so her desire for revenge (at least for herself - haven't seen how she'd react to someone hurting, say, Mili) is muted, especially going that far, or when compared to how much she doesn't want her friend to not do something she'll regret.

That cooldown hug bringing her out of it was incredibly adorable though. Think the neck-kissing and possessive terms should be read into?
>>
>>46042772
>Mili has a strong moral center already
I didn't mean to imply she doesn't. moral center was just the best way I could think of to describe it, maybe moral anchor fits best, as she can calm Mili out of her killing-machine episode, similar to how Sireyis wifes can keep her out of going full DESTROY ALL UNHOLY when she enters Soul of Light.
