__________

You are Sarah Karlsen, Valkyrie of Sweden, and daughter of Odin.

Presently, you're confused.

You stare at the stone in your hand, turning it over as you run your thumb over the surface. It's smooth and cool to the touch, unremarkable for the most part, but you can't help but sense something...more.

"I had thought the last of these had been used or destroyed," Orek murmurs, lost in his thoughts. "To think there are still some in existence, let alone in the hands of the Order..."

"So, what is it?" You ask, looking up at him.

"Near the end of the war we'd lost too many of our veteran Valkyries, with fewer and less to train and manage the new arrivals," Orek explains. "A Valkyrie's power grow over time, but time was something we did not have. So, we looked for other options. Something to speed the process along, so to speak. The best idea we came upon were these."

"Self-contained energy, held within the stone," Sigmund notes, fluttering down to the table between the two of you. "Clever."

"That's right," Orek nods. "Our most elder and powerful Valkyries diverted a portion of their power, with the help of those like myself, to store energy for upcoming recruits. I have no real estimate of how many we produced, but I know the majority were used, with much of the remainder destroyed by the Allies. They worked as a mild booster to the abilities of new Valkyries, allowing for quicker mastery of their skills."

"So I can use it to help make me stronger?" You ask, frowning. "So...why did the doctor give it to me?"

The doctor hesitates to speak at first, pondering his answer.

"That, I'm afraid, is something I cannot answer," Orek admits, offering only a shrug. "However, it appears unharmed and in pristine condition. No matter Khoren's reasoning for giving it to you, this would do well to help you prepare for the road ahead."

"Begging your pardon," Sigmund added, head bowing. "The power in that stone lost much of its allegince once it departed from its host. Now it's in a raw form, easily conforming to anyone attempting to absorb it. I'd wager it could put me one step closer to being more than just a distraction to the crew."

Orek clearly had other ideas about such a suggestion, but he offered no comment. Sigmund, for his part, waited patiently for an answer, wings twitching ever so often.

"I'll hold onto it for now," You decide. "If not for the two of us, maybe Emma and Anna can use it."

"So be it," Sigmund nods, though his wings slump a fraction.

"We'll reach Germany within a day's time," Orek says. "Once there, we'll arrange a meeting between us and the Deputy's companions. They're eager to met the three of you, and it will do good to make a pleasent first impression."

"What happens after that?" You ask.

"Nothing too exciting, I'm afraid. We'll proceed with the support of the Worker's Party and their allies, but we're still not yet ready to step into the light. Until that day comes, we keep doing what we can to strike out at the Order. Perhaps find more followers to the cause."

You nod, thanking him for his time before departing from the medbay. You head towards the Officers Quarters, finding Tobias and the Major speaking with others. The Deputy is absent, so the mood is relaxed.

"I take it it's more than a simple keepsake?" Tobias asks as you enter.

"Something like that," You answer. "Orek's told me the gist of the road ahead. I guess it was too much to hope for quick progress."

"Luckily for us, we have time to spare," The Major says. "Each day you and your sisters grow stronger, so I welcome the time to prepare. Though, we still have our own plans once we end our meeting with the Deputy's friends."

"We'll be able to move with relative safety within the German border," Tobias explains, turning back to the map on the table before him. "With help from friends across the mainland we've discovered a few places and people of interest. Both those belonging to the Order and more neutral parties."

"As it stands, we have the opportunity to expand our own influence as well as undermine the Orders," The Major adds. "What are your thoughts?"

>"We should try and find more allies, in German and out."
>"We should concentrate on working alongside the Workers Party."

>>
>>45989848

"As much as we're capable of, we just don't have the manpower we need," You say. "We need more allies if we're going to be more than a puppet to larger powers."

"We're certainly not matching the Order man for man," Tobias mutters.

"A fair choice," The Major nods. "Despite the Allied victory, it isn't as secure as they think. There are still those in Europe who believe the war ended wrongly, or are at least sympathetic to our fate."

A short period of research and slogging through documents revealed a handful of possible recruits that could help you.

In Finland, a right-wind paramilitary group had recently gone silent after staging a number of movements and assaults against communist and pro-independent officials and groups. Their members were veterans of the Great War, pro-unification, and staunchly loyal to the Empire. Their leader had been an officer in the White Army before facing defeat by the Soviets years ago, now attempting to prevent Finland from falling into communist hands. Word had it that they had either been killed or captured by Soviet secret police, the survivors scattered to the wind. The survivors may know where the rest of them are being held, if they yet live.

In France, word came of an Order deserter and his men attempting to flee into hiding with poor results. Their exact reasoning's were unknown, but the possible skill and knowledge they could bring to the table could prove invaluable. However, elements within the French government were working to help find them and prevent their escape.

In Yugoslavia, rumors persisted of a pair of Bosnian siblings that were terrorizing the Serbian-dominated government and their allies. At one point part of over a dozen different rebel groups, they have chosen a mercenary life rather than that of a freedom fighter. Fierce fighters, with a bounty on the head of each, they were both loved and hated by their countrymen despite the apathy they themselves held.

Looking over what you've found, you find yourself leaning towards...

If I was a betting man, I'd say Finland and Yugoslavia will last a while until the Soviets get ahold of them, but the men in France won't last long. Or they at least won't be in France long.
>>
>>45990770
Until stated otherwise they'll be on the table, but the situation in each changes every day.

"If the Finns have already been captured, their days are already numbered," You say. "We need to get to them before it's too late."

"I'll begin making preparations," The Major says. "In the meantime, make the best from what little spare time you have left. That includes you."

Though surprised, Tobias offers no objection, instead clicking his heels together and saluting.

"As you say, Major," The youth says.

With that he waves both of you out, already calling over older officers to speak with. Closing the door behind you, entering the hall, you turn to Tobias and smile.

"Are you excited?" You ask.

"I've always wanted to see Finland," He says.

You swat his arm.

"Not that," You snort. "About coming home."

Tobias seems surprised at your question, his eyes briefly casting downward as he think. His reaction isn't as cheerful as you had hoped.

"It's been a while," He admits. "It'll be good to come home, I think. Even if for a bit."

Realizing who he's speaking to, the lieutenant blanches.

"N-Not that this ship isn't my home," He says. "Home isn't always a plot of soil, it-it's where you have friends and family, and, ah..."

His consideration is at once amusing and touching.

>"Yes, Lieutenant, please do go on..."

You chuckle, enjoying his discomfort for only a few moments before being merciful.

"It's alright, Tobias," You assure him, despite your coy smile. "I know what you meant."

Hearing that, he relaxes considerably, though he releases a nervous laugh as he nods.

"So," You say, moving past it. "Do you know the people we'll be meeting?"

"Not really," He admits. "I understand they're headed by a Great War veteran, and stand on the far right, but beyond that I've not kept up with Republic politics. They want to help us, and that's enough for me."

Your only response is a thoughtful hum.

"I'd say we have a few hours before nightfall, around the same time we'll make port," Tobias says. "Does the great Valkyrie intend on spending her evening performing her usual brooding?"

"I do not brood!" You balk. "I just...contemplate. Heatedly."

"I see," He nods solemnly. "My mistake, then."

Despite his terrible way of putting it, you do suppose you have time on your hands before landfall. Perhaps...

"If you're attempting to ask for some of my time, I may need help with my German," You admit. "Do you think you could help me?"

"Perhaps," Tobias murmurs, stroking his chin. "I may need to ensure I have nothing else planned, or if-"

Not waiting for him to finish you grab hold of his sleeve and yank. Giving a yelp of surprise, he catches himself well and resigns himself to his fate as you drag him through the hall.

The majority of the evening is spent with the two of you sitting on your bedroom floor, talking and shouting various bits of German to one another. Raised by the British, you only remember fragments of the lessons you were taught on other languages beyond English.

Despite this, you think you manage to be mildly coherent. After the first few initial attempts, and times you interrupted his snickering with a small bolt of lightning, the two of you keep yourselves busy. After what seems like ages you finally allow yourself a break, arcing your back as you stretch yourself.

"Where did you learn to speak English so well, anyways?" You ask, reclining against the side of your bed.

"My father was German, my mother American," He explains. "Before the war my father was a school teacher, and ensured I learned as well from my mother as I did him."

His tone is one of nostalgia, a small smile appearing as he seems to stare out into nothingness. However, there's also a tinge of sadness to him. Something you don't often see.

A small weight tugs at your chest, but you ignore it.

>"What about after the war?"
>Keep concentrated on the lesson at hand.

"What about after the war?" You ask, hesitant.

Your heart seizes when you see the pained expression that surfaces, however briefly, on his face. As quickly as it came it vanished, leaving the professional mask he often wears. A moment passes, and it relaxes, showing a young man with heavy shoulders.

"A great deal of tragedy," Tobias answers, more tired than sad. Perhaps even a little angry? "My father answered the call the day war was declared. A year later, I couldn't bare it any longer simply watching the world unfold. Against my mother's wishes I joined the army, hoping to find my father. To fight alongside him. It was foolish, but I had still been young."

He hesitates, looking to you, but you nod for him to continue.

"I never found him," He sighs. "I never saw him again, either. He had been killed in the east, fighting the Russians. I didn't know until I returned home, after the end."

He reaches up, taking off his officers cap and inspecting it. It still bears the colors and marks of the German Empire, well-kept and carefully tended to.

"A man came to our house a few months later. He said this was my fathers, and had wished for me to have it. I can't say for certain if it was anything more than a lie, but it helped me to where I am today. Which, I suppose, is enough."

Placing it back on his head he clears his throat, giving you a sheepish smile.

"Listen to me chatter on like an old woman," He chuckles, dipping his head in apology. "I told myself not to bother people with the past, especially my own. On this ship, there are plenty more who had it worse than I. Yourself included."

>"That doesn't mean no one cares, Tobias. I care."
>"You said it yourself, didn't you? The past is the past."
>"Chin up, Lieutenant. Misery loves company, and I think I could have worse."

At that you frown, not having one bit of this mopey lieutenant. You want the real one back.

"That doesn't mean no one cares, Tobias," You tell him.

Before he can object you scoot forward, closing the little distance between the two of you and wrap your arms around his neck. He's surprised, but doesn't reject you.

"I care," You whisper, voice muffled against his shoulder.

"Sarah..." He answers, swallowing hard. You only hug him tighter. Caving, he wraps his arms around your waist and pulls you closer. You feel his chin come to rest on your head as he gives a strained laugh. "You're going to be the death of me, woman."

"Good," You answer. "I won't let you leave me any other way."

He thinks he's gotten better at trying to be the Major, stoic and unmovable, but you know better. As a professional on keeping ones emotions are far-flung away as possible, you didn't hesitate to help him when he needed it. Though, you admit to yourself, it's not all a charity act. He's warm, his embrace gentle but firm, the scent of leather-

A knock at the door sends you nearly flying backwards, face flushing as you share an equally shocked expression with Tobias. His face reddens as well, and you both take a moment to return to your previous positions before you answer.

"Come in!" You call.

The door opens and Emma sticks her head through. Spotting Tobias first, she looks to you with eyes shining of mischief, but your glare keeps any comments from surfacing.

"We're almost there," She says. "The Major wants the three of us as ready as we're going to be."

"Right," You nod, standing. Tobias does the same, and you turn to him. "Thank you for the help."

"My pleasure," Tobias nods, tipping his cap to bid farewell.

Emma steps aside to let him pass, allowing him time to depart before looking back at you with a near feline-like grin.

"Soooo...?" She begins, feigning innocence.

A spark of lightning flies from your finger, striking her in the hip. It doesn't even ruffle her skirt, but the surprise causes her to nearly hit the ceiling.

"Sarah!" She growls.

"I love you too, dear sister," You beam, slamming the door in her face.

Turning around, leaning against the door, you place your face in your hands.

Idiot.

Striking the thoughts from your head, you go about finding your best set of clothes. It's probably best that the three of you match, and you doubt the others will much care what you pick. Still, you feel there may be a right and wrong choice.

Scanning the few items in your closet, you decide to wear...

You decide to don your old school uniform. It's one of the few things you still have that links you to your old life. It's also one of the few things you own that aren't directly linked to the military. Not that you're complaining.

When you announce your decision to your sisters, they're willing but curious.

"Aren't we supposed to be intimidating?" Emma asks.

"Not yet," You say. "For now, I want to see who it is we're putting our trust in. Until we can believe them, I'd prefer they think little of us in the way of a threat."

"Fair point," Emma nods.

"I guess it's too much to think we've made easy friends," Anna sighs.

In short order the three of you are prepared, and just in time, you arrive in the port city of Bremerhaven. Initially you had hoped to have the meeting done on land, but your hopes were unfounded. Instead, you meet the new arrivals the same way you met Deputy Himmler.

Alongside the man in question were two more individuals. The first man was clearly a veteran, carrying himself proudlh, though perhaps a bit too highly. His uniform was similar to that of Tobias and the others, but also bore insignia's and emblems you don't recognize. Time had began to turn him a shade plumb, but it did not seem to deter him.

His companion was smaller, slimmer, and much more muted in comparison. Dressed as a common working man, he pulled off his hat and smiled politely as he caught sight of you. He was younger, you think, and seemed much more friendly. You note, as he enters, that he walks with a heavy foot.

"Göring, Goebbels," Himmler said, signaling to you and your sisters. "May I introduce to you Sarah, Emma, and Anna. The last Valkyries on Earth."

The larger man seemed unimpressed, though somewhat curious. He looked over each of you, each time more skeptical than the last. The smaller man seemed further intrigued, looking around the room before settling once more on you.

"So these are Valkyries," The smaller man noted. "A pleasure to meet you, all of you."

"The pleasure is ours, Mister...?" You ask.

"Geobbels," He answers. "Despite what my companion may seem like, he is as delighted as I am."

The larger man, Göring, merely grunted in reply.

"Your Major says the three of you could be the key to restoring our nation," He says, voice deep and rumbling. "I see three children, nothing more."

He takes a step forward, looking down at you, hands on his hips.

"What is it that made us travel all this way for?" He asks. "You can speak for yourself, no?"

"Your friend Himmler said that we can help one another restore our nations," You explain. "You want Germany, and we want Sweden. Whole, as they should be."

A few moments pass and the older man once more grunts, offering little hint as to his reaction.

"And what of you?" He asks, looking to Anna.

"We lost someone dear to us," She answers softly. "We want to stop the people who took him."

At that Göring's expression softens a fraction, but only just.

"And you?" He asks your twin.

"The two girls you see beside me are the only family I have left, sir," Emma says. "Wherever they go, I go. Whatever they do, I do."

Something akin to respect appears briefly on the man's face before he turns back to Goebbels, muttering something. The smaller man merely smiles and nods.

"We have been sent by our leader to greet you all and welcome you to Germany," He explains. "I am pleased to say that I believe there are great things awaiting all our futures. However, there is still a time remaining before we can truly bring you onto the world stage. We can house you, if you wish to end your days at sea."

"We thank you, but that isn't needed," You shake your head. "Just as you have your work, Mister Goebbels, we have ours."

"Of course, my dear," He nods, conceding. "Despite this, we will not simply assure you with word alone. Beyond simple food and basic munitions, is there anything we may be able to help you with? Our means are not as large as we desire, but we are by no means helpless. We may be able to help you with a single request for now."

You look to the Major, who as ever is indifferent, deferring judgement to you. Even now, you question his decision on that particular subject.

>"I don't suppose you could spare us with anything beyond army surplus, could you?"
>"We could use your help tracking down people that could better our cause."

"We could use your help tracking down people that could better our cause," You admit.

"We have gained the ear of many across Europe," Goebbels nods. "I will personally see that we do all we can to assist you."

"We will contact you once we have made plans for our cooperation," Göring says. "Until then, I wish you luck."

"I'm certain we'll need it," You answer. "Goodnight, sirs."

They depart shortly after, though the Major leaves with them. Unlike when Deputy Himmler had arrived, you leave the meeting just as determined as you were before. From what you can tell, the same can be said for your sisters.

The Major returns late that night, explaining that they would be receiving help once they reached Finland. With that set, the ship departs the next morning.

Reaching the edge of the North Sea, the shores of Denmark appear on the horizon. You speak excitedly with your sisters, nearly a stone throw away from the Empire. Despite your anxiousness, you remain focused on your goal of saving the Finns. You reach the outskirts of Finland within a few days time, soon stopping a mile out from the coastal city of Hanko.

Already Tobias is gathered a shore party to support the three of you, but your desire to get going is driving you near mad. You've been told agents would be awaiting you on the shore, but getting there by boat will take time.

You look to Emma, who shrugs, and Anna, who seems less inclined to the concept but doesn't object.

Looking out at the sea beyond, you decide to...

>Remain with the shore party.
>Fly to shore, let them catch up.

Despite your desire to get a move on, you know both Tobias and the Major would have your head if you went on ahead.

With that in mind, you board the ships and begin to make the final stretch to the shore. Nearly an hour passes before you arrive, finding your welcoming party already waiting for you.

The group consists of three men dressed as regular Finnish citizens, if a bit burly and frozen over.

Upon seeing you their eyes go wide, but they recover quickly.

"Is this all of you?" One of them asks.

"Should we have brought more?" Tobias asks.

"You'll do," Another grunts. "This way, if you please."

With that they wave for you to follow them deeper into the forest. The leader of the group introduces himself as Akseli.

"It's been nearly three weeks now," He explains. "Bastards came in the night, took us by surprise. We don't think the Captain fell, but they certainly dragged him off. Him and the rest."

"Do you know where they may be held?" You ask.

"I do. I think," He admits. "We've believed it to be a Soviet outpost for a time now, but never dared test the theory. Too much danger, not just for us, but all of Finland."

"Alright, so where is it?" Tobias asked, growing impatient.

"An old prison, long since abandoned outside of Forssa, within the wilderness. Handed over to the Soviets once the ruling party took power, to deal with dissenters," He says, spitting each word. "By ourselves we'd have the military on us before we could get inside. But with you lot..."

"How quickly can you get us there?" You ask.

"A day, perhaps less. We hadn't expected so many, but it's a blessing, I assure you."

"Just tell us where to go and we'll free your brothers," Tobias says.

Continuing on, you come upon a lumber outpost where a pair of large truck sit waiting to be loaded with timber. However, instead, all of you are ushered onto the back of each. It's an awkward, slippery placement, but a bit of encouragement from yours and Anna's powers manage to take out most of the frost. Tarps are thrown over the backs of both trucks, giving the impression of a regular load.

"Our life is a most glorious one, is it not?" Tobias mutters.

"I don't remember doing this for pleasent drives through the country," You snort. "Try not to fall off."

With that the trucks begin underway, the world around you being only muffled sounds often drowned out by the truck engine. Occasionally you hear brief sounds of people and settlements, but more often not there is little more than the wind.

On the verge of dosing off the truck comes to a halt, stirring you awake as the others prepare as well. The tarp comes free near the end of the truck bed, and you all slide off and regain feeling in your limbs. Around you, you are once more in a snow laden forest with civilization far from sight.

"This is as far as we can get," Akseli explains. "My man will lead you to the prison itself. We will wait here for as long as we can."

"Best we get going then," Tobias nods, rounding his men up.

Your sisters fall into step beside you, and together all of you start into the forest. Despite the excitement you feel from being on soil once belonging to the Empire, you cannot help but feel a nagging sense of familiarity with this place.

Shrugging the thought off, you continue forward.

Today seemed like a particularly good day to continuously drag me away from the computer, meaning my focus and ability to think has been virtually halved today.

So, good news and bad news. Bad news is I'm cutting the thread short here, as much as it sucks (and it does, trust me). Good news is, to make up for being a shitty QM, I may try and attempt to run a follow-up quest in the next few days. I promise nothing concrete, but do know I feel rather bad for doing this.

So, beyond that, I hope you all had fun, as ever I did. Always keen to hear any and all questions, critiques, and other general praise/slander.
