Cao leaves the Emperor's palace, shrouded by a cloak so that none may see. Beneath it he carries his equipment along with the Kriss, Ashrah's blade, a gesture of good faith from Kotal.

His mind is still reeling from his experience in Kotal's dungeon. To be offered a place in the empire as his son... Cao sighs. Pulled in several directions at once, constantly, has left him weary. One group wants his help and then another and another... The Elder Gods must laugh at how much he is toyed with.

The thief puts such thoughts from his mind. He still has an hour before dawn, when he is to meet with the Black Dragon and deliver the hammer and helmet of Shao Kahn. There, he will plant a tracking device on them that will draw the Special Forces. But now he also has another goal: retrieving the Portal Stone on the behalf of Kotal Kahn, should he so choose to, as he gave his word.

But can he truly keep his word to the man who murdered his father?

Cao heads to the catacombs and descends into the secret passage. From there, he finds the pool of blood he once fought a skeleton in.

"Skarlet?" he calls out.

The surface moves as a humanoid figure rises, taking shape as the beautiful, deadly assassin Skarlet. Though, curiously enough, her attire has changed.

"Skarlet? You... changed your outfit?"

"Does this please you more, my Emperor?" she asks.

Cao inwardly gulps a bit as she calls him that. The news of Shao Kahn's soul within him, coupled with his recent encounter with Kotal Kahn, makes her calling him that all the more surreal.

"I liked your old outfit better," Cao replies.

Skarlet closes her eyes and blood covers her body. Though a macabre sight, when it drains away, she is left with her previous outfit. Though a bit more revealing than the other, Cao nods as he runs his eyes up and down her lithe form.

"Does this please you more, my Emperor?"

He shakes his head. "I told you to stop calling me that. In fact, I'm ordering you to stop."

"What would you prefer me to call you?"

"Cao, for starters," he says.

"Very well, Cao." She steps out of the pool of blood and approaches him. "Where to now?"

Cao urges her to sit. She does so, along the edge of the pool.

"What did you do while I was gone?" he asks her.

"This pool was nice," she says, running her fingers across the crimson surface. "But it is not the kind of blood I saw fit to consume."

"And what kind of blood is that?"

"The blood of warriors, spilt in battle," she casually replies. "This blood is the blood of peasants, of fools lured to their deaths... lingering memories and thoughts accompany this blood. It is more like the blood of cattle than of battle," she says, giving a small chuckle at her rhyme.

Cao looks up at her. "I've been wondering... You were in that dungeon for twenty years?"

"Yes."

"How did you not go crazy?"

"I spent much of it asleep. Dreaming."

"Dreaming of what?"

She smiles with half-lidded eyes. "Blood."

Cao sighs. "Of course. Why anything else?"

"Not just any blood," she says. "The blood of cities, nations, worlds. Blood spilt through conquest of the realms. Blood of kings and beggars alike, all spilt before my glorious Emperor." She looks up, as if lost in memory. "I only saw one invasion in my life, when Shao Kahn claimed Earthrealm for this own. What a glorious day that was... ended too quickly."

She lets out a sad sigh. "I dream of another. I've dreamt of it for twenty years."

"So what do you truly want?"

"To serve the true Emperor of Outworld, to be his assassin, to spread blood in his name," Skarlet replies. "It is what I was made for."

"And you weren't made for anything else at all?"

"Shao Kahn made me as I am. What point is there in denying one's true nature? I was made to kill, I thrive on it, consuming the blood of my enemies to fuel my kombat prowess. I enjoy it."

"What about other things? Food? Drink?"

"Pleasure of the flesh," she idly says. "I can enjoy them just the same, but they do not carry the same thrill." She pauses for a moment. "In fact, I rather enjoy drinking... ever since I first had some."

Cao thinks for a moment. "During our fight, I kissed you to take you by surprise. You said something about almost forgetting. What did you mean by that?"

"Oh," she says, letting out a small laugh. "I had nearly forgotten what contact with another was like, non-violently that is. It had been so long since anyone dared enter the sanctum that any contact at all was a rather welcome thing. In fact it was nice. But I still felt I had to kill you."

"Thanks..." Cao replies.

Cao stands up. "Well, I've got things to do today. Might be some killing involved later if you're up for it."

"Always," she says, her blue eyes gleaming.

"Until I need you, stay hidden," he tells her.

She nods, and without another word, bleeds into the floor and vanishes.

Cao heads home to pick up the helmet. He doesn't disturb his sisters as he does so.

Heading to the northeast corner of Z'unkahrah's inner wall, Cao waits for the sign. This is a rather empty corner, away from the markets or anything else important, so it seems smart of the Black Dragon to have chosen this spot to meet.

Suddenly, there is a bright flash of light. Cao averts his eyes as a portal opens up and out steps Trevor, along with several Black Dragon mooks. "Cao!" he says with a smile, holding out his arms. "I knew you'd come through on the job, eh mate?"

Cao nods as he approaches. "I have the helmet and the hammer with me."

Trevor stops a few feet away. "Alright. I'll take 'em from here, then get you your payment when the man comes through."

That's no good. If Cao does this, he might not get a chance to steal the Portal Stone...

"Hold on," Cao says, holding up a hand. "I want to be there for the deal. I want to see the buyer and get the money from him."

"Kano is the one handling the deal," Trevor says. "He might not like it."

"Too bad, I went through too much trouble to be anything other than cautious," Cao replies. "Besides, I want to see more of the organization."

Trevor folds his arms. After a moment, he smiles and nods. "Alright. Give us a chance to hang out a bit more, eh?"

He turns around and motions to the others. They quickly group up and Trevor takes out a mechanical device. "Let's go."

He presses a button, creating a portal. They all step inside.

Once more, Cao finds himself outside the Black Dragon's base. Trevor and the others start heading inside.

Cao knows he could activate the beacon now and alert the Special Forces, but maybe he should wait until they make the deal. Then perhaps the Special Forces could attack the buyer as well.

But Cao still doesn't know who the buyer is, or what kind of protection he will have. It could be too much for the Special Forces to handle. He isn't sure...

Cao decides not to activate the beacon. He follows Trevor into the tunnels and finds himself once more in the Black Dragon's compound. Things are a bit more active this time around, with boxes being moved about and things being taken down.

"What's going on?" Cao asks.

"Every once in a while we pack up and head somewhere new," Trevor says. "It's best not to stay too long in one place, right? So we're gettin' ready to head out."

"What about the deal? Aren't they coming here?"

"No, we're going to them," Trevor replies. "We'll be meeting on neutral ground. We don't let anyone come to the main base. When it's time for the deal to go down, we'll portal over."

"Who is the buyer, anyway?" Cao asks.

"Don't know, don't care, didn't ask," Trevor shrugs.

Cao splits off from Trevor and searches around the base for a while. He sees a few familiar faces, all of them preparing for the upcoming move. He enters the primary control room and sees Kabal overseeing the current operation, but no sigh of Kano, and no sign of the Portal Stone

Cao approaches Kabal from behind. "Nice to see you again," he says.

"That's a lie if I've ever heard one," Kabal says, his mechanical breathing punctuating his burnt condition. "Do you have what Kano sent you to retrieve?"

"I do," Cao nods.

"Good."

Kabal turns his attention fully back to the screens in front of him, still standing with folded arms.

"So... Trevor says you guys are getting ready to move. How often do you pack up and move around?"

"Whenever we need."

'Helpful...' he thinks. "Are you going to another realm?"

"No. But if it were me, I would."

"Where would you want to go?" Cao asks.

Kabal turns his head again, staring Cao in the eyes through his mask. "The Netherrealm."

"The Netherrealm? Why?"

"Ever been? Fascinating place, really. I think I feel a bit more at home there, among the others whose worlds are nothing but fire."

The man stares. Breathing. Cao slowly backs away. "Alright... I'll just, uh, be on my way, then..."

Cao quickly turns and walks away. He can hear a faint chuckling sound coming from Kabal beneath his respirator.

That guy gives him the creeps...

Cao travels deeper into the base, where he finds a fighting pit. There, Black Dragon prospectives compete to get a chance to join the organization.

Tasia is here, in the pit, with three men. Other Black Dragons cheer her on as she slaughters them, wielding two swords. Her moves are quick as lightning and her body is like a dancer's as she twirls around and slices the would-be initiates. Cao observes her as she leaves them all with small cuts that slowly sap them of their strength as they bleed.

He realizes she could kill them whenever she pleases, but instead keeps them alive, only to prolong the fight. She smiles as she dances, cutting off a finger, then slicing a shoulder, before one collapses in a pool of his own blood.

She'd give Skarlet a good run for her money, that's for sure.

The final one falls when Tasia decides to end it by gutting him. She impales both blades through him, cleanly severing his body's hold on his soul before withdrawing her blades and taking a moment to rest.

She leaves the pit, wiping her blades on the clothes of her kills. Cao has an opportunity to go up and speak to her.

Cao steps closer to her as another Black Dragon hands her a towel. "Where did you learn those moves?"

"Greece," she says, pausing for a moment to wipe the blood from her skin. "My mother taught me."

"To kill, or to dance?"

"Both," she smiles, "right up until I killed her when she tried to kill me." Cao swallows a bit as she takes a drink of water. "I didn't think we'd be seeing you again," she admits. "Perhaps you'll be more useful after all."

"I can be used in all sorts of ways," Cao throws her a smile.

"I can only imagine," Tasia chuckles.

She smirks. "Firstly, those were not members. They wanted to be members. They were weak, so I killed them. The Black Dragon has no room in its ranks for weaklings and pathetic members---weakness breeds weakness. So if weak members try to join, they are weeded out."

She then turns back towards the pit. "Secondly, the pit is where we resolve disputes. Got a problem with someone? Take it to the pit. Argument? The pit. Want to kill? The pit. Are you starting to understand?"

"Can I fight in it?" Cao asks after a moment.

She smiles and places her hands on her hips. "You sure that's a good idea? Who do you even have to fight?"

"I'll fight him," a voice from the back reaches their ears. Two Black Dragons are pushed to the side as Kobra muscles his way over. "He's scrawny. Don't know what Kano ever saw in him. Two minutes, tops."

Cao looks Kobra in the eyes, considering whether or not he should meet this challenge.

"Bring it, blondie," Cao says as he takes off his backpack. He throws it into a corner as the Black Dragon mook begin to cheer.

Kobra takes off his jacket and walks to a table, picking up a large, rusty and bloody machete. Cao takes out his dadao blade and they both proceed into the pit arena. The ground is even and dirt, circular in nature, with strong walls.

Kobra points the machete at Cao. "The Black Dragon ain't got room for the likes of you."

Tasia joins the crowd looking down into the pit, alongside Trevor and Kira.

Cao prepares himself for kombat! Kobra brandishes the machete and prepares to charge.

Kobra charges in, swinging his machete! Cao sees it coming a mile away and rolls away from the karate warrior, doding the swing. He then turns around and swings his sword, scoring a hit across Kobra's back! The crowd cheers as Cao's blade cuts his shirt and draws blood.

Kobra shouts and whips around, furiously swinging his weapon, but Cao again rolls away.

As Kobra faces him again and swings his macheta, Cao blocks it and pushes against the blonde. He twists his blade in an attempt to disarm him, but Kobra pushes back and forces Cao down onto a knee before kicking him away, stepping back as he does so. Cao manages to get back up onto his feet and both of them square off again.

As Kobra charges back in, Cao leaps up, flipping over his head. He grabs him by the shoulders as he rolls behind him, using his weight and momentum to pick Kobra up and throw him over his own shoulders!

Kobra flies forward and hits the wall, sliding down to the ground and dropping his weapon.

Cao reaches for some dirt as Kobra gets up and prepares to throw it, but to his surprise, the man puts his hands together and throws a fireball! Cao puts up his arms to block but the projectile hits him in the chest, sending him to the ground with some smoke coming off him, his dadao landing nearby.

As Cao tries to pick himself back up, Kobra is on him in an instant, punching and kicking. The man falls back into his mixed martial artist training, getting on top of Cao and focusing on quick, tight attacks to pummel him into submission.

Cao, however, thinks fast and darts out with a fist, punching Kobra right in the neck! The man chokes a bit, giving Cao the chance to headbutt him and get him off. Cao scrambles away and picks his sword back up as Kobra gets his machete.

As Kobra prepares to get up, Cao leaps over atop him and smashes him right in the face, drawing blood. Kobra falls to the ground, his blonde hair splaying across the dirt.

As Cao prepares to kick him, Kobra shouts and his feet burn. He propells himself upwards in a fiery backflip kick from the ground, kicking Cao away and getting up to his feet. He charges in!

"Submit?" Cao asks, but Kobra continue to struggle, refusing to give up.

"Finish him!" a voice shouts from above. It's Kira. "Kill him! Do it!"

The Black Dragons around her pick up chanting, "Finish him! Finish him! Finish him!"

Cao looks at Kobra, who grits his teeth and continues struggling, refusing to stop trying.

Cao looks at Kobra as he pulls his head back a bit before slamming it into the wall. Then again, and agian, and again. Much like he had done to D'Vorah, Cao battered Kobra's head until his body lost all tension and he stopped struggle, but Cao keeps going beyond, his fingers running red with blood. He crushes Kobra's face into the wall, painting it red, about twenty times before dropping him to the floor. Everyone cheers as Cao holds up a bloody fist.

Within him, something stirs. He looks down at his kill and kneels over him, turning him around. He grits his teeth and is compelled to hold his hand over Kobra's head, clamping it down on his forehead.

His eyes widen a bit as he feels a strange power overtaking him. Kobra's soul leaks off of his body and up to Cao's hand, where he absorbs it into himself. Cao lets out a gasp as he feels stronger, consuming the soul and making its power part of his own.

He falls back, panting, and the power goes away. He's in full control and frightened of what he just did, but it felt... good.

Cao looks at his bloody hands for a moment before he is pulled to his feet by Trevor. "Hahahah! Great job! Always hated that cunt myself!"

Cao feels someone wrap an arm around his and sees that it is Kira, giving him a devious smile. They take him out of the pit and leave Kobra's dead, soulless corpse behind, though only Cao is aware of the latter part.

Trevor hands him a beer as various Black Dragon gang members pat him on the back. Cao drinks it as they enthusiastically discuss the kill.

Cao tactfully disentangles himself from them as he finds a dark corner to contemplate what just happened in.

He felt it---Kobra's soul, his lifeforce, his essence, whatever you call it, draining into his hand. It joined with others who fled into him in Shao Kahn's Sanctum. Cao breathes hard as he looks at his bloodied hands and focuses.

He thrusts both hands in a direction and blasts a fireball, Kobra's move! His eyes widen as he realizes he has the man's power. Cao closes his eyes and hears something deep within himself. Deep, powerful, resonant.

>"The souls of the dead offer power. They are your slaves. They are yours by right. Claim them. Subjugate them. Use them to destroy your enemies. Rule!"

The voice stops and Cao is shaken out of his stupor as Trevor rounds the corner. "You alright?"

"Fine," Cao breathes.

"Just got word. Kano's back," he says. "He'll want to see you." As Trevor turns, he stops and looks back. "Oh, and welcome to the Black Dragon, mate."

Well, a little out-of-quest history lesson, back in the day there was a horrible game on the PS1 called Mortal Kombat: Special Forces, which was an adventure brawler where you played as Jax as he hounds Kano and takes on several Black Dragon lieutenants as bosses.

The game is notable for (more than just being a horrible game) introducing Tremor, who languished in obscurity until he managed to claw his way back into the light, supported by his fans. Other bosses included Jarek, No-Face and Tasia, the latter two have since never been in any games.

Tasia, however, recently made a return in the MKX prequel comic, much to my delight.

Cao whispers Skarlet's name and she bleeds out of the ground, taking form alongside him. "What was that I felt?" he asks.

"Shao Kahn was a master of absorbing souls," she says. "He conquered entire realms. Within him he held countless souls that he used to fuel his inhuman power. Be it through strength or sorcery, Shao Kahn was the ultimate warlord because he was empowered by those he conquered. He ruled over both the living and the dead." She places a hand on his shoulder. "You, too, shall rule."

"I don't know if I want to kill," Cao says, avoding her gaze.

"That's a lie," she says with a smile. "I saw it. The lust in your eyes. Your desire to spill his blood was as great as mine."

"Because I didn't like him," Cao says. "He had it coming, he challenged me. Did Shao Kahn kill only those who challenged him?"

"Of course not," she replies. "The Emperor only killed those who were worthy of his attention. His armies took care of the rest." She gently turns his head to face her. "In time, you will see," she assures him, her words leaving Cao wondering at what he is to become.

It's at this point he notices she's changed her outfit again, to a unitard, mask, gloves and boots. "New outfit again?" he asks, changing the topic.

"I do not know what suits you," she replies. "I only aim to please."

She considers for a moment. "I would like to wear many different things," she replies honestly.

"Well, don't let me stop you," he encourages her. "Wear what you like when the fancy strikes you." He looks at the beer. "Here, want a drink?"

She tentatively reaches for it and pulls her mask down to drink. "I'm going to go find Kano," he tells her. "Stay hidden until I need you, okay?"

She nods, vanishing away into a puddle of blood, leaving the can behind.

Cao walks into the primary center of the compound, discovering Kano outlining their movement to the new base. The room goes quiet as the thief walks in and Kano smiles. "Well, here he is, man of the hour," he laughs. He looks at Cao's bloody hands. "See you've been busy, eh?"

The steel table in the heart of the room has a silver case upon it, with the Portal Stone inside.

"Shame about that hammer," Kano shrugs. "But the man wanted the helmet most of all." Kano points at the door. "Someone'll get you a portal back to Kahn's city."

"I'll be coming to the deal to get my cut," Cao tells him.

"Oh, izzat right?" Kano says, folding his arms.

"Let 'im," Trevor throws out to his father. "He just took out Kobra, so I say it's owed."

Kano looks at his son with his one good eye. "Ain't nobody owed nothin' here," he says. He turns back to Cao. "But the kid's got balls. Alright then."

He tosses the helmet to Cao. "We're leaving in just a bit. Jarek, Tasia, you're with me and the ankle biter. Everyone else, stay back. Kabal, you're the one in charge 'til I get back. Start the move when everything's ready."

The masked man nods. Kano closes the case on the Portal Stone and takes it with him. Cao can't help but remember that Kano said the same buyer is also looking to buy the Portal Stone, so it'll be at the deal...

As the group disperses, Cao approaches Tasia. "So, will that guy I killed be missed?"

"Doubtful," Tasia says with a shrug. "Few actually enjoyed his company. Kira liked him, more like someone would like having a puppy, but she was also the first one to shout for you to finish him, so that should tell you all you need to know."

"He wasn't very challenging, either," Cao shrugs. "I'm sure the Black Dragon will do fine without him."

"A good kill. Not very graceful, though," she criticizes, "but I applaud your brutality all the same. This clan has no room for those who cannot stomach blood."

"Speaking of which, she did you join?"

"Well, if it wasn't obvious, I like doing what I do. But I joined after my mother's attempt on my life and I ran from the law. For a time I was a thief, like you. Freelance, working my way across the world. The Black Dragon found me and put my talents to better use. Haven't looked back ever since."

"Why exactly did your mother try to kill you?"

"Jealousy," Tasia says with a serpentine smile. "I was better than her, in many ways. She couldn't stand it. But when the time came, she hesitated. I didn't. That's why I'm alive and she isn't."

"I don't care for them too much," she replies. "They have a bad habit of shooting at me." She takes out a sword. "Fortunately, I have a habit of making them dead."

She pauses for a moment. "Say... You're from Outworld. How do you know about the Special Forces?" she asks, her voice suddenly a bit suspicious. Cao quickly thinks up a lie.

"Trevor told me about Kano's relationship with them," he says.

"Ah... I see." Most heads in the room turn when Kano returns.

"Time to roll out," he announces. Jarek moves to follow him.

"Shall we?" Tasia asks as she moves after him. Cao goes along with her.

Cao exchanges a goodbye with Trevor before following Kano out to the sands beyond the hideout. There, he uses a technological device to open up a portal. He, Jarek, Tasia and several Black Dragon thugs with armor and guns enter the portal. Cao follows along.

He is whisked across Outworld to a massive canyon, with bridges of stone crossing the two sides far overhead.

Kano looks around and spits. "Bah, figures he'd be late. That's what I get fer being punctual."

He looks over and sees a lizard lounging on a rock. He takes out a knife and throws it at the lizard, skewering it. He walks over and holds up the body on the end of the knife and begins to roast it with an eye-laser before chewing on it.

Tasia takes the opportunity to stretch and limber up. Jarek folds his arms and squints at the horizon as the thugs maintain the perimeter.

Cao approaches Kano. "So, Trevor said I'm in the Black Dragon now."

"Trevor don't decide who's in or out," Kano replies, biting off the lizard's head and spitting out part of the bone. "Boy think's he's got he's got that right; he doesn't."

"You seem very hard on him," Cao remarks.

"What of it? He's my son, I'll treat him however I---Wait a tic," he stops chewing and stands up. He looks in the distance, zooming in with his mechanical eye. "Hah. Showtime."

Cao looks on as what appears to be some kind of warparty begins to appear from around the bend of the canyon. They ride chariots pulled by various beasts.

In a way, Cao recognizes them from his childhood. He remembers the armor his father used to wear, red and silver, like Shao Kahn's. This group wears similar armor, with some black thrown in.

They stop a distance away as the Black Dragon fall face them and the meeting is about to begin.

Cao does not yet activate the beacon. He hopes that when he does, the Special Forces will come in time.

One of the chariots pulls up and a man announces, "Black Dragon! You are in the presence of Emperor Reiko!"

'Emperor Reiko...?' Cao thinks to himself. He watches as another chariot, a larger and more ornate one, is pulled forward by a pair of Outworld steeds.

Cao saw this one once before, when his father fought in his armies. He looks at him now, with his grey goatee and Shao Kahn-styled armor with a knockoff helmet, and he can't help but regret that his father ever once marched for this man and died fighting for him. He doesn't look particularly worth fighting for.

"Kano," Reiko calls out. "It has been a long time."

"Long enough to start calling yourself Emperor, huh?" Kano says with a smile. "I assume you brought the money?"

"I have," Reiko says, his eyes straying towards Cao. He stares down at him and at the helmet in his hands. "Is that...?"

Cao holds up the helmet and Reiko's eyes widen.

"Easy there, 'Emperor,'" Kano says. "I know this means a lot for you, but we have business to conclude."

Kano reaches over and takes the helmet. When he does, Cao steps back and reaches into his pocket, activating the beacon.

Jarek opens up the silver case with the Portal Stone. Reiko laughs and says, "Truly your methods are effective, Kano! And true to my word, I've brought payment for both. Where is the hammer?"

"Helmet only," Kano says.

"The hammer was part of the deal!" Reiko insists. "How am I to be a proper Emperor without both?"

Cao stays silent as Kano works out the finer points of the deal. The Black Dragon head even manages to maintain the full price for the helmet, even though Cao had kept the hammer to himself. It takes some time, but the deal is done.

A third chariot, with chests of gold, drives up and prepares to unload. Jarek and Tasia inspect the gold and ensure that it's good and Kano gets ready to hand over the case with the Portal Stone and the mask.

At that moment, a portal opens up in the sky overhead and several helicopters fly out. Kano and Reiko both look to the sky as this happens.

"Aw, bollocks," Kano mutters.

Reiko summons up a blast of blue magic and knocks Kano to the ground, immediately reaching for the helmet and case! He grabs them and makes it back to his chariot as they begin to fly away!

Nearby, Kano gets up and prepares to use the portal device to plot a quick escape as Special Forces soldiers begin lowering ropes to descend onto the battlefield!

As the Special Forces touch down and bullets begin to fly, Cao looks and sees Reiko on his chariot riding away with the Portal Stone.

"Skarlet!" he says urgently, and she appears alongside him. "Go after Reiko! Get the Portal Stone from him!"

"Where will I meet you?" she asks.

Cao thinks quickly. "The catacombs! The blood pool! I'll make it there myself, but I need that stone!"

She nods, and without a second's delay, she fades away into a pool of blood in Reiko's direction.

Cao looks back and sees Jax and Sonya charging out of the Special Forces helicopter, battling with the Black Dragon. A large, red-headed man with a thick mustache tackles Jarek to the ground and they begin to scuffle.

Cao knows he has to play his part to avoid suspicion.

Not even trying, Cao charges one of the mooks and gets taken down in a moment. His face is forced down and his hands are quickly tied up with some kind of strange plastic tie that will not break despite his best efforts.

He watches Kano and Sonya go at it, amazed at the prowess of both warriors. Kano throws a pair of knives which Sonya rolls under, allowing her to do a rising bicycle-kick on him. This ends up with her on top of him, pummeling his face in before he kicks her off and rolls towards her like a cannonball, barreling into her. He stomps on her but she trips him and they take turns strangling each other for a bit.

Jax blocks a sword strike from Tasia and shatters both her swords. "Just like old times!" he shouts as he picks her up and gives her a suplex, knocking her out. He then walks over to Kano and Sonya's scuffle and joins in, and despite the ferocity of Kano's attacks, he does not last long against them both.

Soon all remaining members of the Black Dragon are on their knees alongside Cao. Sonya and Jax look on at them. Kano is the first to speak up.

"Lovely day for a reunion, isn't it sweetheart?"

She folds her arms. "You're going away for good this time, Kano."

"Y'know, they say time heals all wounds, but the same isn't true for being a cunt, eh Sonya?" Kano laughs.

She ignores him as they put bags over their heads and force them into separate helicopters by the soldiers.

Cao is sat down and the door closes. After a moment, the helicopter takes off.

His mask is pulled off. He realizes he's in a helicopter with Sonya and none of the other Black Dragons.

"You did good, kid," she says with a smile, wiping away from blood from her lip. "Real good."

"Where are the others?"

"In the other choppers. I'm in here with you so we can talk. Jax is with Kano and I've got men on Jarek and Tasia. We didn't get all of the Black Dragon, but this is enough." She takes out a knife and cuts his wrists free from the plastic.

"They're moving their base," Cao tells her. "Don't know where."

"Kano might, but I doubt he'll tell," Sonya replies. "But we have him. That's what really matters."

Cao is silent for a moment. "I need to head back to Z'unkahrah," he tells her. "My sisters are there and I still have unfinished business."

"We can make that happen," Sonya says with a nod. "Listen, Cao. You helped me bring in Kano. This means a lot to me, but bringing you to Earthrealm is going to be complicated. We need to be quiet about it."

"I can do that," he says with a nod.

"My men and I can't stay in Outworld any longer. I'm going to give you something," she says as she hands him a small device. "This is a portal generator."

"A portal generator?"

"One-time use only. Got it? Only one. This is a special escape portal devised by our scientists. It's meant as an escape from a bad situation for our men; it takes them directly back to a medical wing in Earthrealm at the OWEA headquarters."

"Okay," Cao nods, understanding.

"Use this when you're ready to come to Earthrealm, when you're done with your business and have your sisters. We'll take care of you from there." Sonya smiles and places a hand on his shoulder. "Don't keep us waiting too long, alright? I don't like having outstanding debts."

He smiles back at her and puts the device away in his pocket.

"They did," Sonya nods. "The car, too." At that, she lets out a bit of a laught. "Hard to believe that thing made it through Outworld."

Cao changes the topic after a moment of silence. "How do you feel about me? We never really got the chance to talk before and you seem really busy all the time. Would I really have a place in earthrealm?"

"You seem like you have a good head on your shoulders," Sonya says. "You're a scrapper. A survivor. I can tell that just from looking at you. Earthrealm has a place for all kinds of people, and I've known scrappers. Trust me, there's room for one or three more."

"What will happen when I reach Earthrealm?"

"Like I said, we'll handle it. We'll get you settled in, probably in some temporary housing, and figure out what will be needed to give you a new life. Forged background, probably, some paperwork to back it up. Complicated stuff but I'll make sure it gets done."

Cao nods and sits back, closing his eyes and waiting for the trip to be over with.

About two hours later, he's dropped off once more outside the Living Forest. He waves to Sonya as she flies off with the others.

Cao moves quickly through the Living Forest and makes it towards Z'unkarah. Entering the city through the exterior aqueducts, he makes it to the streets and disguises himself with Ashrah's hat as he makes his way to the noble district and uses the fountain passage to the catacombs.

Once inside, he heads to the pool of blood and calls out for Skarlet, but there is no response.

He sits on a stone and thinks. Perhaps she hasn't had enough time to make it back yet. Maybe something happened to her. He isn't certain...
