Well, the Division is not a perfect game (it suffers from a lot of typical Ubisoft problems), but it's still pretty damn entertaining considering I've already dumped 27 hours into it (I might actually still be playing it right at this very moment...).

You are the former United States Navy warship USS HOEL, now returned as a shipgirl and ready to kick Abyssal ass!

You had to admit, these Canadian ships were pretty all right. Ontario reminded you lot of Mulberry and Enterprise. Incredibly motherly and eager to make sure everybody around her was happy. Haida was a bit more of a mystery to you. She was pretty quiet most of the time, but she definitely seemed the sort who knew what she was doing. Plus she didn't really protest all of the motherly attention Ontario was showering on her, so you reckon that she wasn't a completely straight rail like Portland.

However, you didn't really have a lot of time to get to know them. Right after meeting them on the tarmac, they were whisked away by the Captain to get caught up. Meanwhile, you were all ordered to report to the Tarawa, which would be carrying the shipgirl forces to Midway along with the fleet. Scuttlebut going around was that that the Admiral had made the Tarawa his flagship, but if he did, you hadn't seen any sign of him, nor Sam.

The first day was spent just everybody trying to decide where they'd be quartered. Naturally, the fleet carriers and the battleships got the prime real estate normally set aside for officers, while the more common destroyers and cruisers were relegated to the enlisted bunks. Not that you were complaining. Despite the number of shipgirls packed on to the ship, it didn't come close to the nearly 1,000 Marines the she used to carry.

You wake up on the dawn of the second day of your transit, greeted with the sight of bottom of the bunk bed above you. Yawning loudly, you reluctantly crawl out, noticing that nobody else was present. Guess they decided not to wake you. Not like you all had anything particularly important to do yet.

According to the itinerary, the Tarawa would be rendezvousing with the rest of the amphibious assault fleet, with the actual attack taking place tomorrow. It was honestly a bit shocking just how quickly the Admiral and Captain were able to throw such a sizeable conventional and shipgirl force together so quickly. Then again, an assault for Midway had always been planned, so maybe the assets were just already in place.

Nevertheless, you needed to figure out what to do for today.

You decide to start off the day with a nice and hearty breakfast. After all, it was the most important meal of the day! Or so you were told. You quickly shower and get dressed, deciding to put on a fresh uniform today due to the cramped confines of the ship magnifying pretty much every smell by several factors. As you walk through the hallways, you could hear the small pitter patters of the Workshop Faeries scrabbling through the pipes, vents, and small spaces of the ship. It was pretty inevitable that he moment Shen brought them aboard, they'd scatter to the winds trying to spruce up what they could. The old amphib carrier had only recently been brought out of mothballs, after all.

And they seemed to be doing a good job, too. According to some of the veteran crew, Tarawa was now running better than she was when she was fresh out of drydock. However, Shen was plenty angry since faeries working on the ship meant no faeries working on the actual Rigs. It was not uncommon to see some of his less liked personnel being assigned the impossible task of rounding up the little buggers to get them back to work.

However, none of that stops you on your way to the mess hall, which is absolutely PACKED. You see shipgirls, enlisted, and even officer crew squeezing in wherever they could, and you could quickly see why.

Pancakes.

And not just pancakes, but maple syrup. Not the watered down artificial shit in the stores, the but REAL DEAL Sam was able to smuggle into the base straight from Canada.

You quickly dash over to the serving counter, where you see a cheerful looking Ontario casually humming a tune, flipping freshly mixed pancakes on the stove. Her long blonde hair was tied back in bun, but that didn't really detract from her motherly qualities at all.

"Oh, Hoel, nice to see you up and running!" Ontario says cheerfully as she slides a tray with a quad stack of pancakes and a small mug of coffee to you. "I made sure to give you double servings, given what your sisters have said about you!"

"Um thanks." You blink, wondering just what exactly Johnston and Heerman have been telling her.

"Well, you go eat up! I'm just finishing up the last batch here and I'll clean up and join you later!" Ontario gives an angelic smile as she turns back to the stove.

Christ, it's a pity they don't make ships like her anymore.

With tray in hand, you turn back to the mess hall, and immediately see three potential spots. Of course, there was a table that your task force seems to have taken over for themselves. At another table, you could see Portland being tasked with the unenviable duty of babysitting the Fletchers, who had a very awkward looking Haida sandwiched between them as they ogled at her uniform, red hair, and just about everything else about her. Finally, there was the table where The carriers and battleships were sitting at. You could immediately spot Enterprise and Iowa, and there seemed to be a little empty space just between them. A capital ship definitely couldn't fit in there, but a destroyer just might...

You head over to where the Fletchers are sitting. You suppose that poor Sweet Pea is going to need some help wrangling those destroyers. You head over to their table, pancakes in hand and you take a seat next to Portland, who looks just looks at the perpetually energetic Fletchers with a mix of tiredness and envy.

"Been like this all morning?" You ask with a cheeky grin.

"All morning." Portland confirms as she glumly looks at her now empty coffee cup. "I thought you were bad, Hoel, but Luce, Wren, and Daly are on a whole different level."

"Yeah..." You nod as you take your first bite of Ontario's pancakes and feel a shiver up spine. So good! "So uh, what's the story with them and Haida over here?"

"Oh, well, the usual." Portland shrug. "Foreign destroyer, and they all want to know more about her."

"Haida, Haida! How many confirmed kills did you get?" Luce asks as she leans in uncomfortably close to Haida's face.

"Ohmygosh, is this natural?!" Wren oohs as she runs Haida's long red hair through her fingers. "It's so reeeed!"

"And that uniform is soooooo cute!" Daly squeals. "Is it standard issue for your navy?"

"Ummmm ummm ummmm." Haida stammers, completely unable to keep up with the rapid fire questioning.

"Now now, girls." You say as you finish off your first pancake." Leave the poor Canadian alone and let her eat her pancakes in peace."

"Okay!" Luce, Wren and Daly chime as they return to ravenously devouring their breakfasts.

"How do you do that?" Portland asks incredulously. "They NEVER do what I say!"

"I guess it's just a destroyer thing!" You chuckle.

"Thanks for the assist, Hoel." Haida says, her cheeks slightly flushed.

"You know, you're one of the last few destroyers I've seen that wasn't comfortable around their own class!" You point out as you start work on your second pancake. "I take it you're not the social type?"

"N-no! I'm plenty social!" Haida tries to convincing you very unconvincingly, her shoulders shifting around a bit to much. "It's just... I'm just not used to dealing with with them like this!"

"Oh, really?" Portland raises an eyebrow. "How's that?"

"It's complicated." Haida shifts nervously.

"Aw come on, we've got plenty of time!" You say cheerfully as you shovel in the last of pancake number two into your mouth. "Why don't you spill?"

"Well..." Haida sighs. "Well, when this war first started, I was one of the earliest ships to 'come back.' At least, for Canada, that is. As such, I was often the first on the frontlines whenever the Abyssals tried to make a push from the Arctic, and pushed often and in force."

"Yeah, I heard the early days were rough." You nod.

"They were." Portland confirms.

"Well, anyways, as the fighting went on, more and more Canadian Navy ships started trickling in. A light cruiser here, a light destroyer there, but it quickly added up. By that point, Arctic raids weren't as threatening as they were before now that we had more shipgirls to keep them at bay..."

"I feel a 'but' coming." You frown.

"But, since I was the first destroyer, and the one that's seen the most combat, I guess you can say that the other destroyers are... intimidated by me? It's not like they're doing it on purpose or to be mean or anything but it's just..." Haida sighs and droops a bit. "I get the feeling I'm standing on top of a pedestal, and the others won't get close to me because of it."

"Hmmmm, that does make sense, in a way." Portland nods.

"AWWWWW, WE LOVE YOU JUST THE SAME, HAIDA!" Luce, Wren, and Daly wail as they all dogpile her.

"Gah!" Haida gasps as the bundle of destroyers falls over onto the ground.

Yep, it looked like Haida simply just didn't know how to deal with clingy destroyers who didn't care about her reputation.

"Oh my, it's nice to see Haida making friends so quickly!" Ontario smiles warmly as she sits down. "Now, don't go rolling around on the floor like that, you'll get all dirty!"

"H-how do you DO that?!" Portland gasps.

"Well, you learn a thing or two when you lead a large destroyer squadron!" Ontario giggles, her golden blonde hair swishing in the air.

"How many destroyers do you lead?" You ask.

"Hmmm, well, not too many." Ontario puts a hand to her chin. "Including Haida... that would be 53 destroyers total."

You swear Portland's jaw would have dropped and hit the floor if it could.

"T-that means they're pretty obedient, r-right?" Portland stammers.

"Oh no, they're all quite as rambunctious and energetic as these three right here!" Ontraio motions to Luce, Wren and Daly.

"H-how..." Portland wheezes. "I-I can't even control three..."

"Well, you know, Sweet Pea here just LOOOOOOVES destroyers!" You grin as you wrap an arm around Portland and pull her close to you , close enough that both your cheeks rub together.

"Hoel, what are you-"

"So much, that she wants to lead fifty of them herself one day!" You continue on, cutting off Portland's protests.

"Really now?" Ontario's eyes spark with life. "Oh, well, I've... I've never really taught this sort of thing but... I'll do my best! And do you prefer to be called Sweet Pea? I know quite a lot of ships like to go by their nicknames..."

"N-"

"Of course!" You say loudly, drowning out Portland's protest. "Why do you think I keep calling her that!"

"All right then, Sweet Pea!" Ontario gently grasps Portland's had and starts leading her out of the mess hall. "Let's get straight to it, then! Luce, Wren, Daly, I'll require your services, too!"

"YAAAAAAAY!" The three destroyers cheer as they follow Ontario and Portland. Portland shoots you one last look of utter HATE right before getting pulled out the door.

"I'LL TAKE THAT AS A YES!" You grin as you loop your arm under hers.

"More company is always welcome!" Johnston joins in as she takes Haida's other arm and the two of you literally carry the little Canadian destroyer out of the room.

"H-hey, wait! Stop!" Haida protests uselessly as her feet drag across the deck.

"HEY JOHNSTON, DO YOU HEAR ANYTHING?" You say loudly.

"NOPE! I JUST HEAR A DESTROYER HAVING FUN!" Johnston replies, equally as loud.

"But-!" Haida stammers.

"Just roll along with it." Heerman chuckles. "You're not going to change any of our minds."

Haida just sighs.

The four of you make your way up to the hangar deck. Back in the Tarawa's glory days, this would have been where her helicopter compliment would have been stored and serviced. However, in her current role as a shipgirl transport, the hangar deck had been converted into a mobile maintenance shop. Due to the importance of the mission, Shen had decided to personally accompany the assault force this time, doing last minute tuneups and maintenance on all of the rigs.

"Ah, Hoel, Johnston, Heerman and..." Shen squints and adjusts his glasses as he catches sight of Haida. "I don't believe I recognize you."

"I-I'm HMCS Haida, sir!' Haida somehow manages to salute, even with her arms being held by you and Johnston.

"Ah yes, Haida, I've heard of you from my old colleagues." Shen nods in recognition. "A lot of their current maintenance knowledge stems directly from working with you."

"Ah, well, honestly it was nothing!" Haida blushes slightly.

"They've also pointed out how regularly you had to brought in for repair. Not unlike a certain few other destroyers here." Shen eyes you and your sisters grumpily."

"Hah, well, I was a bit more reckless in my early days..." Haida acknowledges.

"Oh, not so different from us, eh?" You grin as you finally let go of Haida and nudge her in the shoulder. "Reckless is our middle name!"

"More like 'giving the engineers extra unnecessary work' is your middle name." Shen sighs and shakes his head.

"Actually, you're technically our senior!" Johnston says happily. "So we'll be sure to follow your lead!"

"U-um sure." Haida nods, her eyes naturally drawn to Johnston's front hull.

"Now Haida, you wouldn't mind if I take a look at your Rig? I've been assured that you and Ontario were overhauled before being sent here, but I'd like to double check."

"Oh, yeah!" Haida nods as she closes her eyes, summoning her Rig. As it materializes, you note that it doesn't look too much different from yours at first glance, thought the most obvious difference were the two double barreled pistols holstered o her belt.

"Ah, your dual barrel 4 inch guns." Shen nods. "May I?"

"Sure." Haida nods as she carefully hands her weapon to Shen. You watch his arms buckle for a split second as he tries to adjust to the weight, but you're impressed that an old man like him could lug such a heavy load. He he turns it over in his hands, that little flash of an engineer's happiness in his eyes.

"It's well built, and well cared for." Shen smiles as he gently hands the pistol back to Haida. "I'm sorry to say that we don't really stock 4 inch ammunition as standard, so you'll use your reserves carefully."

"Understood." Haida nods.

"As for you three." Shen waves for you and your sisters to follow him as he shuffles further back into the workshop. "We've completed the development of your experimental refits. Ideally, I'd like to get these put on and put through testing before the battle, just to work out any kinks. Are you ready for that?"

"Of course!" You nod, grinning with anticipation. "Been waiting for this all day!"

"Understood." Shen nods. "Then let us get ready then. Head down to the well deck and summon your Rigs there. Then I'll walk you through the testing process. Haida, you go along with them as well. Even though we're in with the rest of the fleet, an extra set of eyes wouldn't hurt."

"Yes sir." Haida salutes.

"And remember, if you can, DO NOT turn on your refitted systems until I tell you." Shen warns.

"Got it!" You and your sisters nod."

"All right, go along, then."

The three of you jog down to the well deck. You've all been the Tarawa before, so you all know the way there. Down in the well deck, you can see a couple of RHIBs being prepped to launch by members of STRIKE-1. No doubt as extra "pairs of eyes". You give wave to Red and Section, who are busy mounting a heavy .50 cal machine gun on one of the RHIBs. Red waves back while Section gives a slight nod.

The four of you jump down into the water, summoning your Rigs as you go. Immediately, you can see Johnston's Rig was very different from what it used to be. It was now a greyish black instead of the regular light grey, and you could see the Rig extend out to cover more of her body, particularly around her chest, like an honest to god suit of armor. Meanwhile, it seemed that Heerman's Rig extended out to wrap around her entire right arm, might it look rather robotic.

Meanwhile, your own Rig looked rather different as well. Your old radio mast was now more af a large, angular column, the sides covered with radar arrays. Currently the power to the new radar was disconnected. You could easily fix that, but decide not to since Shen instructed you to keep it off anyways.

"Taffy 3, you are clear to launch." The Captain says over the well deck's loudspeakers. "Good luck out there."

And with that, the four of you sail out into the open sea outside. Almost immediately, you can see the numerous conventional Arleigh Burke destroyers forming a protective perimeter around the Tarawa, and one of the larger Ticoderoga class cruisers. Farther out, you could see the distant silhouettes of shipgirls on picket duty to watch for any potential Abyssal scouts or ambushers.

"All right, we shall begin testing shortly." Shen announces over the radio. "Which of you would like to go first?"

"Me me!" You say happily. "I wanna see how this new radar works!"

"All right." Shen says. "Now, just to reiterate, you're now using the same type of radar suite that our Arleigh Burke class destroyers normally use. I don't have to remind you that modern search radars are more powerful than their WWII predecessors by orders of magnitude."

"Yeah yeah, I'm aware of that." You roll your eyes.

"You will be able to see farther and with more clarity than you've previously thought possible." Shen continues. "I say this the few other shipgirls that have taken this upgrade have had... 'exciting' experiences upon first activation. Poor Annapolis' incident is rather infamous among us in the workshop.

Oh boy, you HAD to hear this sometime...

"All right, if you are ready, turn on your radar at minimum power setting. We want to take this slowly." Shen instructs.

And you see everything.

Not, not just everything.

EVERYTHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING.

Granted, you just started on the low power setting, so you can only see what's immediately around you, but it's still extremely harrowing. Before, using your radar, you could only "see" objects as rough silhouettes. Basically fuzzy blobs that you had to guess at what they were based on the context of the situation like speed, altitude, and size. Sure, it let you see things beyond regular visual range, but it was all ultimately guesswork.

But here, you could see every single little detail. Not just the outlines of Haida and your sisters, but you can pick out the individual folds and wrinkles in their clothes. The individual rivets and weld lines in their Rigs. You can TELL when each of their individual eyes were blinking. Hell, you could see even DEEPER than that. straight through their clothes and-

oh.

OH.

YOU'VE MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE!

>Hoel's new radar now allows her to find critical weakpoints in enemy defenses! Attack rolls of 19 will now count as a critical hit! These rolls do not generate FATE POINTS.

"Hoel? Are you okay?" Johnston frowns. You swap back to your regular optics and see her looking worriedly at you.

"Yeah, why?" You blink.

"Your nose is bleeding." Johnston takes out a handkerchief and dabs it right under your nostrils. "Guess Shen wasn't kidding about the power of that radar!"

Huh? Oh right. Yeah. The Radar.

"So, what did you see?" Haida asks.

"YOU'D KILL ME IF I TOLD YOU!" You shake your head rapidly, trying to back up, only to feel the back of your Rig bump into Heerman, who's not standing behind you.

"Oh?" Johnston's face twists into a devious smile. "What could you have possible seen?"

"Yeah! What?!" Haida asks suspiciously.

Both of them were slowly inching closer and closer to you. You knew how this was going to end, so you might as well end it with a bang.

"I've seen things you Destroyers wouldn't believe." You utter, wonder in your eyes. "The way that Johnston's bra is just a little too small for her. The color of Heerman's panties and the lace on Haida's underwear. All those things, like a sailor's secret stash, gone like tears in rain."

There's a moment of silence as Haida and your sisters pause to process what you just said. However, as the realization begins to creep in, so does the blush on their faces.

"I somehow expected this was how it would go." Shen sighs. "Anna had the same reaction too and her poor boiler just couldn't handle it."

Well, you had MUCH more to worry about than a blown boiler, as now you were facing three VERY embarrassed and VERY angry destroyers.

Both Johnston and Haida dive to tackle you, but you're too quick, crouching down to your knees, while your screws propel you forward, just narrowly dodging the two attacking destroyers as they ram into Heerman instead.

"Oh dear..." Shen sighs. "Just leave her be, girls, we still need to get through the rest of the testing."

"Fiiiiiiine." Johnston sighs.

"Well, it's not like we don't know where she sleeps." Heerman points out.

WAIT. FUCK.

"Don't worry, I'll chase her down!" Haida assures them.

DOUBLE FUCK.

You pulse your advanced radar again, increasing power and this time getting an eye on the rest of the ships in the formation. However, this time, you already know what to expect, and try to filter out all the unnecessary details that you can. Immediately, you could see a few hiding spots you could use to try and shake Haida's pursuit. There was the considerable bulk of the nearby Ticonderoga class cruiser Phillipine Sea which could you from Haida's gaze. You could also see a small shipgirl task force, with Anna at the center. Maybe you could blend in with them to hide from Haida's radar? And then there was the LCS Freedom, which was out on the edge of the fleet resupplying some of the submarine shipgirls. Surely Haida wouldn't chase you that far?

You manage to kick up a cloud of smoke from your Rig's smokestack, obscuring Haida's vision and forcing her to rely on her radar to track you. However, right as you do, you swing around the stern of the Phillipine Sea...

...and crash right into the back of Portland's rig, nearly sending her falling face first into the water. Good thing she had higher tonnage than you.

"Hoel!" Portland grunts as she barely manages to maintain her balance. "What are you doing here?"

"What are YOU doing here?" You counter, right when you see Ontario and the Fletchers present as well.

"I was just practicing formation sailing with the Fletchers." Portland adjusts hers glasses. "At Ontario's suggestion of course."

"Hey, clear off, ya little twerps!" You laugh as you lightly shove them away.

You quickly slip away from the cruiser/destroyer group before Haida can link up with them, and instead sail for Anna's position near the back of the formation. You can see her sailing between the escorting Burkes, evidently coordinating movements and operations between them and the larger fleet as a whole. She WAS a communications ship, after all. No doubt she was keeping touch with distant superiors in Pearl and DC as well.

"Yo, Anna!" You wave at her as you casually sail past the small shipgirl detachment escorting her. "Whatcha up to?"

"Oh, Hoel!" Anna smiles as her hair antenna twitches furiously. "Just coordinating some fleet movements and keeping track of the submarines and subgirls we've sent ahead to scout! Nothing too much!'

"Actually," You give a seductive grin, "I don't mind. Look all you want~."

"W-w-w-w-w-w-whaaaaaaaa!" Anna starts to freak out.

However, the process is interrupted when Iowa swoops in and flicks her on the forehead.

"Anna, focus! We can't have ya overheating like that!" Iowa drawls and then turns to you. "And you, Hoel, ya should know better than to bully her and get her all riled up when she's on duty!"

"Sorry..." Anna says meekly.

"Sorry." You hang you your head.

"Now I'm sorry to say, but if you ain't got nothing better to do, Hoel, you should return to Tarawa!" Iowa grins. "Don't want you causing a ruckus for the girls on duty!"

Well, maybe you should follow Iowa's advice. Looks like you've shaken Hadai off your tail. Then again, maybe you should link of with your sisters and kinda sorta apologize to them. Maybe they're not so mad anymore?

They seem pretty mad. It's not like it's something we haven't seen 100 times either....

The question is, is this roll for our sisters being angry or is it us catching Anna using her radar on us as we walk away?

You feel a hard impact against your back that feels like a goddamn freight train, sending you tumbling forward and falling face first into the water with a large SPLASH. And then you feel something grab the back of your collar and LIFT you, Rig and all, so your feet were actually dangling above the water. You wipe the salt water out of your eyes to see a grumpy look Heerman, that robotic arm of hers holding up your entire weight. Johnston then sails in, now sporting a large metal shield, in addition to the extra plating on and around her body.

"Well, Hoel, it seems you've experienced your sisters' upgrades firsthand." Shen explains. "As you can see, Johnston's is rather straightforward, being passive armor protection."

"Personally, I think it kind of ruins my figure, but I think we can adjust it!" Johnston giggles.

"And Heerman here is testing an experimental technology I've been developing for Rigs. EXO gear to increase raw strength and durability." Shen continues, explaining that metal arm. "I haven't been able to develop a full body version yet, but Heerman volunteered to test it and I've gotten rather valuable data.

"Still feels a bit stiff, but it works." Heerman grins.

"Um, can you let me down now?" You ask meekly.

"Not until you apologize." Heerman glares at you.

>Fine! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!

"DUDE WE SEE EACH OTHER NAKED ALL THE TIME ANYWAYS!" You wail. "I DON'T SEE WHAT THE HUGE PROBLEM IS HEEEEERE!"

This was kinda true. You ARE sister and you DO live together, after all.

"It's the principle of the matter!" Heerman huffs.

"Yeah! The principle!" Johnston says in agreement.

"WHAT PRINCPLE! YOU'RE JUST SAYING NONSENSE!" You yell as you thrash wildly but uselessly.

"All right girls, I think that's enough testing for today." Shen's voice interrupts you all. "Let's pack it up and return to the Tarawa, all right? Then you three can kill each other then."

"Okaaay~!" Johnston chimes. "Oh, maybe we should tell Portland? I think she'd want to join in, too!"

"Ooooh, that does sound tempting." Heerman smiles.

"Haha, nice joke there...." You laugh nervously. "You're joking, right?"

"Are we, Hoel?" Heerman's smile goes from innocent to evil in a heartbeat. "I'm sure she'd love the thought of you peeping at her every time you turn on your radar..."

Godfuckingdamnit.

You are so dead.

If that's what the radar does on low power, does high power just increase the range, or does it increase resolution as well?
