Every story has an ending. Boy finds girl of his dreams, boy gets together with girl. Boy finds multiple girls of his dreams, boy ends up with harem who decidedly love-hates him. Boy settles with girl not-of-his-dreams, girl stabs boy in the chest with a cooking knife. You, however, are not that boy. You are not sure whether to be thankful or angry about that. But the fact remains that you are said boy's best friend and quite frankly, you are rather tired of it. That is not to say that you don't love him like a brother... because you do. But the moment he ends up with a girl, the story will be over, the curtains will draw, and everybody that you know and love will disappear forever into a sea of bad spinoffs and sequels.

So it is your duty as the main character's best friend to cock block him so you all don't get sent into story-oblivion. God, this fucking sucks. Your greatest deeds can be amounted to making sure your best friend stays a virgin. Basically, you are an asshole. You pray that when you finish high school, this little charade will be over and you can get on with your own life. But for now, you and your best friend are – and will – be tied to the hip.

Let's get this show on the road already.

“Class,” the homeroom teacher says abruptly, maintaining a stoic face. “I have some bad news to tell you.” The entire classroom quiets down, ready to hear his words. “Due to a very generous benefactor, 2C will not be meeting in school tomorrow. So...”

“Oh no,” you groan to yourself.

“It is unfortunate to say...” The teacher removes his spectacles gravely, throwing his folder on the table.“We are going on a two day beach trip tomorrow.” The entire class, deathly silent before that point, erupts into a cacophony of cheers and whooping. Monkeys, all of them.

Is this their idea of a redeeming episode? The director should stick to his shitty OVAs.

----

And so, tomorrow happened and you are now packing everything important, plus one pair of swim trunks. Ideally, you can spend a relaxing day at the beach but with all the girls there plus Hiro, you're probably going to end up more tired than usual. When you get to school, they unceremoniously throw you into a bus. Thankfully, it's a real bus and not a metaphorical one. You pick a good window seat and prepare to sleep. You're probably going to need it.

Nina shuffles over uncomfortably. “Hey. This seat taken?”

“Actually, it is.” You lean your head back on the window, shutting your eyes wearily. “If you want to contest this seat, please fill out the Satoshi Seat-Partner Complaint Form and settle this in court.”

Nina says nothing and sighs, preparing to move further into the bus.

>”I was just kidding. Go ahead and sit here.”
>You can deal with Nina later. You're too tired right now.

You take a deep breath and rub your eyes. Cracking open one, you say to Nina, “I was just kidding. Go ahead and sit here. Though...” you lower your voice. “Aren't you going to ruin your position and the main girl by sitting here?”

“What's the point?” Nina tucks her belongings under her seat and dusts off her seat. With a sigh, she sits down and leans her head back on the headrest. “You said that if Hiro gets together with a girl, then the entire world falls apart, right?”

“Basically. The world that we live in will end. And that's it. The season's over and we wait to see if we're popular enough to get a spinoff or something.” You pause. “But nobody really cares about another generic harem show.”

Nina doesn't look too happy. “Isn't the happy ending supposed to be, 'Guy gets girl, guy and girl lives happily ever after'?”

“No.” She's still thinking like the lead of a romcom show. “It's more like, 'Guy gets harem, guy gets harassed by harem, guy is implied to have wacky hijinks with harem forever before camera pans up into the sky and ends the show.'”

“Okay.” Nina mulls over the thought. “So, if we do get a spinoff, does that mean that the popular characters get to come back?”

“Probably.”

“And... what about the unpopular characters?” Nina averts her gaze, if only for a second.

You shake your head. “Who knows?”

Looks like most of the class is on the bus now. You'll all be departing soon. A few uneasy minutes pass before the bus starts up and gets on the road.

Nina first breaks the silence. “What should I do now?”

>Tell her to relax and enjoy herself. This is a beach episode, after all.

“For starters, why don't you relax and enjoy yourself? We're going on a free trip to the beach. Worry about the anime later.” You yawn and curl up next to the window. “Can't say I can do the same though. Beach trips are a free ticket to sexually harass Hiro. So I have to stick around and make sure nobody does anything stupid.”

Nina scratches her chin anxiously. “I don't really know what to do on a beach trip, though.”

“Nina, my God. What do you mean, 'you don't know'? Put on a swimsuit, splash around with your friends.” Really, this girl is something else.

In a small voice, Nina says, “What if I don't have friends?”

“That's where you use the harem genre to your advantage.” You really wish you brought a pillow. The window makes your neck stiff. “As long as you're a good-looking girl, all you have to do is walk up to the harem and you're basically in. Even though harems fight, they're usually on good terms with each other. Make friends with the other girls.”

“Yeah... I guess.” Nina towards the window, admiring the passing city fly by. “Thanks, Satoshi.”

“Don't thank me. I just want to sleep.” You plug your headphones into your mp3 player and shut your eyes, hoping for some shut-eye before you arrive at the beach. “Night.”
>>
The bus halts to a stop. Groggy, you strain to get one eye open. Through the window, you can see the beach, in all its glory. Maybe, if you were one of those dipwad side characters, you'd scream, 'It's the sea!' or something. Oh, wait. You are one of those dipwad side characters. Stretching your limbs, you grumble, “It's the sea, hurray...”

You stand up and get ready to file out. You hear a thud echo from your seat. Nina was out cold too. Well, long bus rides do that, you guess. You shake her awake. “Bus ride's over.”

She stirs, brushing the stray hair from her eyes. “Mm, oh are we here already?” Grabbing her bag from underneath the seat, Nina drowsily follows the crowd of students out the bus. As soon as you get outside, you're face to face with a gigantic traditional inn. The teacher gathers all the students before they can escape to the beach.

“Now,” he starts, completely sullen-faced. “You have the option of staying at the beach or touring the area. Please stay in groups and do not wander off alone. We will be staying in the inn, so please come back by eleven. There is a hot spring, but please do not attempt to join the other gender. And if you do, you will be escorted out immediately with no lodging. Any questions? No? Dismissed.”

Oh. Hot springs. Damn, how many filler episodes can they fit in one episode? What's next? Me– actually. You're not going to say it. Once the teacher leaves, all the students clear out and run off to do their own things. Hiro comes and wraps his arm around your shoulder. “Satoshi! We should go to the beach!”

Typical of the protagonist. “Uh, sure. I'll go get changed after I drop off stuff.”

“Oh, right. I saw you sitting next to Nina. I didn't know you two were that close!” He smiles. “I'm glad. I thought she didn't really like you or something.”

“Demon pacts for make for a good alliance,” you shrug. “Now we're on our way to steal the souls of innocent young high schoolers.”

He laughs. “Did you watch too much anime before going to bed?”

You laugh back. “Something like that.” Hiro's a good dude. If he weren't a walking chick magnet, you'd probably have a hell of a good time hanging out with him. Still, he's your best friend.

“Still curious though. What did you talk about with Nina during the test of courage?” He pleads, clasping his hands, “I won't tell a soul. I promise.”

“Honestly, we just talked about anime until she could stand up again,” you lie casually. “I don't actually remember what I said. I just wanted to calm her down.”

“You're really nice, Satoshi.” He gives you a big thumbs-up. “I just wish everyone else knew, though.”

“Yeah, well, I never liked being in the spotlight anyway.” You throw your hands up in the air. “I'm going to get changed now. See you on the beach.”

You go to your assigned room and dump all your stuff inside. Then, throwing off your clothes, you get your swim trunks on and put on some sandals. And the moment you step foot onto the beach, you see Hiro being dragged through the sand by Yuko, who is laughing her ass off. Chasing her (and Hiro) are Shina and Yori, probably trying to save him more than anything. Nina is behind Shina and Yori, though she doesn't look even the slightest bit concerned for Hiro. So that leaves...

“Satoshi!” Patricia screams in your ear. You turn. Girl's all dolled up with a big flower pinned to her hair. She puffs out her chest in pride, though you really wish she didn't. She has a green polka-dotted bikini on and it looks, uh, not bad. “What do you think? Do you think Hiro will like it?”

“No,” you reply flatly. “I hate it. He'll hate it too.”

She's taken aback. “R-Really?”

“No, you idiot.” You shoo her away. “If you care so much, then go ask him yourself.”

Patricia looks up and down at her outfit. “I'd be too embarrassed.”

“What, and I'm okay?” You hide under the shade of an umbrella and lie down on the sand.

She stops. Then, with a quick move, she buttons up her shirt over the swimsuit. “Don't look.”

“It's too late, you numbskull.” Anyway. “You look alright, so go knock him dead or something. As long as you don't do it literally.”

Patricia nods lamely. After a pause, she says, “You know. I think we started off on the wrong foot.”

“Same,” you start. “That's how I tripped over you when we met.”

Patricia slaps you on the shoulder, frowning. “I was being serious here, you dunce.”

“Haha, sorry. It was too good to pass up. But I think we can all acknowledge that as an accident and move on.” You sink slowly into the sand, letting yourself drown in the warmth. “So, friends?”

“Yeah, why not.” Patricia smiles. “Just don't try and wrong-foot me again.”

“Accident,” you lazily explain. Despite relaxing in the sand, you eye Hiro running around in the sand as a wary lifeguard would. Guess he escaped from Yuko's clutches... too bad she's still chasing him around a few meters behind.

“You'll tire out eventually, Hiro!” shouts Yuko, jogging right behind Hiro. From her speed, you know that she's definitely holding back. She likes the chase, doesn't she?

“Satoshi! Heeeeeeeelp!” screams your best friend, whose breathing is growing increasingly ragged.

You sigh and dust the sand off your skin. With a cheeky smile, you tell Patricia, “Now, if you'll excuse me, I have someone to save.”

Kicking along a nearby beach ball with your feet, you dribble it right past Hiro. When Yuko passes you, you do a quick sliding tackle to the ball, sweeping her feet from right under you. “Oh shit,” you say in your most innocent tone. “Oops?”

“Satoshi, c'mon. Watch where you're going.” Yuko complains, shaking off the sand in her hair. “I almost caught my prey!”

“Haha, sorry, sorry. Won't happen a second time!” You laugh, putting on a dorky smile. You say nothing until Yuko loses interest and instead pursues something more interesting, like teasing the other girls in the class.

But damn, you lost sight of Hiro.

>Better go after him. He's probably near the inn, given how far Yuko chased the guy.

Yeah, you shouldn't get too complacent. Literally anything can happen if you don't keep your eyes peeled for Hiro. Better chase after him. Even if that means that you're going to miss out on some quality beach time.

“You played that like a real pro.” Nina approaches you from the side. “If I didn't know better, I would've assumed that was a real accident.”

“I've had years of experience playing the best friend. It's almost natural by now.” Waving to her curtly, you tell her, “I'm off to go find Hiro before he does something dumb.”

“Yeah?” She giggles. “I'll join, too.”

“Do you think this is a game?” you groan. But you're not going to waste any more time trying to convince her not to come. “Just hurry along. I think he's around the inn.”

You don't find him along the walk to the inn, nor was he inside anywhere. You have no clue where he went. “Damn, the protagonist of this anime is missing. What shoddy script are we following?”

“We're in a beach episode!” Nina laughs. “You tell me.”

“While we're on this terrible plot line, can we at least rewrite it so that I get a day off?” You circle around the entrance of the inn. “I'd like to get promoted from the laughingstock of the anime to a respected side character, please. Not like that'll ever happen.”

“Must be tough being the best friend, huh?” Nina returns a sympathetic smile.

You rub your nose. It's still sensitive from the volleyball in the first episode. “You have no idea.”
>>
You finally find Hiro on the ground, gasping for air. Looks like he ran around the entire inn to make sure Yuko wasn't chasing after him. You've got to admit, that's some dedication. But before you can call out to him, Yori ambushes him first. Huh.

It's pretty hard to see what's going on, but it looks like they're talking. You would step in immediately but the atmosphere is tense. You motion Nina to hide behind one of the walls of the inn. From this distance, you can't even hear their conversation. But if you go any further, they can easily spot you.

Nina, wide-eyed, whispers over to you, “Do you think she's confessing!?”

You shake your head no. “The timing isn't right. We're in the middle of an episode and everything's been lighthearted. There needs some build up. But it's hard to tell what's happening. We're too far away. If I go in, I might ruin something accidentally.”

Even in a harem anime, there has to be some semblance of narrative causality. We can't just appear out of nowhere during an important scene without reason.

Though, if we and Hiro are the type to carry phones around even on the beach, we could try to
>Interrupt the scene by calling Hiro.

Likely, it'd resolve such that Hiro has a humorously embarrassing ringtone, which sets the mood back to normal and acts as a punchline.

You rummage through your pockets. You brought your cellphone over when you changed, right? In case of emergencies, or some shit like that. From the corner of your left pocket, you thumb your trusty flip cell-phone. It's pretty old, but you can't say you hate it. Nodding to Nina, you motion for her to leave. “Let's go back to the inn.”

“Ehh?” She protests. “What about Hiro!?”

You hush her. “I have a very important phone call to make.” You hurry back inside and immediately push the speed-dial for Hiro. If you brought your cell, chances are, Hiro did too. You calmly wait two rings before he picks up. Hell yeah. Best friend knowledge. “Yo, Hiro!” You exclaim, adding sincerity to your voice. “Where are you!? We all thought that you got lost somewhere. You're okay, right?”

“Oh! Uh, yeah! Everything's fantastic! Great! Ahaha!” His laugh seems a little shaken. “I'm actually heading back now. We can meet up in the inn?”

“Oh, cool. Nina and I are already here, so we'll wait for you.” You suck some air in and wait a second. “Did you, uh, see Yori by any chance? I think she wandered off somewhere too.”

“NOPE!” He shouts a little bit too eagerly. “I'll see you there ASAP. Okay, bye!” With a click, you snap your phone shut. You scratch your chin thoughtfully. Though Hiro isn't one to lie, his occasional fibs are really easy to figure out. Your thoughts are interrupted by Nina.

“That was good. Really good.” She puts a finger to her lips. “Is every harem show directed by you behind the scenes?”

“I'm good at what I do. But if Hiro didn't have his cellphone, I think I would have dropped dead in fright.”
>>
Hiro arrives, still slightly winded. “Satoshi!”

“Hey, you're alive!” You smile at your friend. Thought you have an idea, you ask him, “What have you been up to?”

“Ah, you know, stuff, and...” He trails off. Quickly changing the subject, he says, “Oh! You're with Nina again! Are you two an item?”

You shake your head. “Not a chance.”

“Oh, I see.” Hiro says, nodding. “I... just got back from the, um, far side of the beach and stuff.”

“Cool.” You won't press him anymore. He looks relieved that you believe him so easily. “Anyway, do you want to go travel around the city with the girls? I think it'll be fun exploring.”

“Sure!” He looks over to the inn. “I can go change first, right?”

“Yeah. We all do, unless you want to travel around half-naked.”

He salutes you. “Alright. I'll be heading in, then.”

Nina, finally speaking up, says, “What do you think?”

“About what?” You ask, prepared to walk inside the inn. She stops you.

“About Hiro. I never got to ask, but you said you were forced to be the best friend, right?” Nina looks at you dead-on. “But what do you, as a person, think of Hiro?”

Possibly buy more screen time by being a sympathetic character and possibly make the show more than generic harem

Or introduce a horror aspect or turn the thing into a mystery? Dunno, there's more ways to subvert the show; especially one using up all the generic fillers in 4 episodes
>>
>>45945459
We have no power on what the show will or will not become. We're just trying to live through the director's whims.
>>
>>45945115
>He's your best friend. Simple as that.
>>
>>45945517
>become
Do we know that?
We obviously have some agency if we can subvert the tropes, we just need to take it a step further.
>>
>>45945115
>You don't like him as the protagonist. But as a person, you care for the guy.
>>
>>45945459
>attempt getting close with a girl in the harem with the expectation we'll fail
Don't see how this would get us a spin-off.

>Wallow in obvious pity of how much we stuck compared to our bro
Achieves nothing.

>Possibly buy more screen time by being a sympathetic character and possibly make the show more than generic harem
May work. If we become enough of a fan favorite, we may end up getting our own series, though it'll be an uphill task since the camera is always focused on Hiro.

>Or introduce a horror aspect or turn the thing into a mystery?
>subvert the show
May break the universe, but depending on how the universe itself functions, may also be the way to go.

Playing it 'safe' and becoming Kamina in an attempt to get a Nanoha-style spin-off is probably the best option until we know more, though.

Or we could just follow our purpose, be a generally good guy and hope for a good ending when the series finishes.
>>
>>45945454
That screencap is relevant at all times.
>>
>>45945540
Our actions influence little in the grand scheme of things.

We can delay things on how events play out, but things like genre shifting, like your implying with the mystery or horror, is something way out of our influence.
>>
>>45945540
We're not subverting tropes as much as we know what's expected and use that to our advantage

If we could combo the harem trope triggers right, we could get the director to consider branching outside harem, as long as it isn't "animation intensive"

We've already created hints of supernatural activity (demon pact; appropiate light flickering), and while they WERE played for comedy within the show... what if we managed to consider the director to do more with it.

He has to know it's conpletely generic. The possible inclusion of differentiating factors could increase $ potential and get us more seasons

“It would be convenient if I could say that he is a nice guy and move on.” You exhale slowly. “I don't like him as the protagonist of this show. Not because he's a bad lead, but because he gives me a lot of work every day. I'd like to sit down and mind my own business one day, but I know that's never going to happen.” You pace around the entrance of the inn. “Still, I care about him. At the end of the day, the only other person I can rely on is that guy. So, he's my best friend. Simple as that. Now, as the 'main girl,' what do you think about Hiro?”

Nina shrugs. “I like him and he's a nice person, but I don't have any personal attachment to Hiro. It's actually a bit freeing, knowing that I don't have to chase after him.” She blinks. “That reminds me. 'Not a chance'? Really?”

“Don't flirt with me, now. The ratings will dip if you do.” You motion her to enter the inn. “Let's go get changed. We have some more harem stuff to do.”

When you enter your room, you put on some shorts and a casual button-up. Thank the stars you don't have to wear your school uniform. It's too stiff for you to wear it all the time. “
>>
Once all the girls have dressed and gathered, you round them up into the nearby street. “Alright! What we're going to do is go around the city!”

“That sounds fun!” Patricia shouts, ready to do something. “What's the plan?”

Without missing a beat, you reply, “I have no plan!” Everybody topples over. Still, you keep your smug-ass smile on.

Hiro steps up to defend you from the mob. “O-Okay, for starters, why don't we just walk around and see what we can find?”

You let Hiro lead the group along and shuffle your way to the back. Shina's trudging along from the very back in a struggle to walk.“What's wrong with you?”

“I'm... really tired after chasing Yuko,” she wheezes.

“That was a while ago,” you helpfully point out.

“I'm not exactly in the best shape of my life. My legs are bricks right now,” Shina whines. “Regardless, it's good that you're here. Can we talk? It's about that time in the bakery.”

The problem I'm having right now is that we are doing exactly what we shouldn't be doing: being nice to all these girls and steadily making them like us, thereby decreasing their interest in Hiro who doesn't really show any affection to them other than simple friendship stuff.

Furthermore, the fact that this story actually has US as the protagonists in the first place instead of Hiro is raising some red flags for me.

What if the premise of this harem show was different from the others from the very start? An original story, wherein the sidekick actually takes the harem away from the 'supposed' MC by just simply always being around the girls of the harem.

After all, we have a lot of things in common with the girls already:
>Priscilla and we like mystery novels
>Nina and we know about the anime thing, and are both obviously not so happy about it
>Yori's also our childhood friend
>Yuko is trying to get us to join the track club even more so than Hiro. It seems so to me at least
>>
>>45946504
>what if we're the mc

God help us. What genre does that even fall under?
>>
>>45946582
Cuckoldry?
>>
>>45946504
You bring up good points, but in character we don't realise anything like this yet.

Not to mention several of the girls have expressed some interest in Hiro.

But it really doesn't matter, unless we come to this realisation in character it wouldn't make any sense for us to stop trying to keep the girls away from Hiro.
>>
>>45946504
So head to head fight over the harem between friends to spice it up? like how 2 guys fight over one girl in other romance shows?

would be a change and unique show that for sure

Given that we are rushing through the filler episodes maybe the production crew are willing to subvert things to gain a jump in rankings
>>
>>45946504
I have the same reservations. My only issue is, is this a ruse(we are the mc) or a double ruse?
>>
Then the only question is has harem shows started to become stale and declined in attracting viewers like how the zombie craze is now finally ending?

And if so would any corp willing take a risk with the formula and the resulting profit risk?

If we assume that all the talk about this being an anime is taken seriously, it would either be

>A. Psychological thriller, in case this really isn't an anime and both Nina and we are just lunatics who have a false sense of reality
>B. Supernatural, since some kind of force is threatening to destroy the world once someone hooks up(be it Hiro or us)
>C. Romance drama, seeing how we are destined to prevent the person most precious to us(or maybe even ourselves eventually) from forming a romantic relationship

“I'm all ears. But,” you eye the rest of the group walking forward. “Let's stick with the group.”

“Okay, but don't walk too fast now.” She looks down at her feet, lifting her left up daintily. “I'm still injured from when I tripped on my ankle.”

“Oh right, I forgot about that,” you laugh. She gives you a dirty look. “So what's up? Been thinking about Hiro?”

“About that.” Shina puts her arms behind her back. “I think I'm going to give up on Hiro after all.”

“What.” You almost faceplant into the asphalt. Luckily, you were lagging behind the group so they didn't see anything. “Why?”

“It's better off for the rest of the girls. I've been getting this feeling of guilt, anyway.” Shina smooths down her hair with her hands. “But thanks anyway, for the encouragement. I'll keep doing my best.”

Uh. “And what brought you to this decision, if I may ask?”

She puts a hand to her cheek. “I've just been thinking lately. But don't get me wrong! It's not like I'm going to be ignoring Hiro from now on or anything. It'll just be the same as usual.”

“Still like him though?” You wonder if this is okay. Regardless, as long as Shina doesn't flat out hate Hiro, you think things can still proceed 'the same as usual.'

Shina blushes instantly. “Let's not get too hasty.”

Well, there's that.
>>

You rush on over to Nina, who you've promoted to be your confidant. “Uh. So, Shina told me that she's giving up on Hiro for now.”

Nina sharply turns around. “What.”

“Yeah, me too.” You suppress a scream. “She still likes him, though. I'm just not sure what that means.”

“You're the expert, here,” She shrugs. “I'm just here for moral support.”

“My best guess is that this is some part of the show where one of the girls reaffirm their love to the protagonist after a drawn-out series of indecision.” You snap your fingers. “And then all that is lost when the protagonist gets caught in a perverted situation.”

“...That's a stretch,” Nina mutters, shaking her head.

You smile shallowly. “I don't believe it either. There's a chance though.”

“So you aren't going to convince her?”

“Not now.” You rub your temples. This is turning out to be a fun beach episode. By that, you mean it's going terribly. “This can still be resolved naturally. I'm not going to rush in without some kind of idea. Even if the idea is half-botched. If anything, I have one less person to keep track of at the moment.”

Nina puts up three fingers to your face. “Don't get too lazy now. You still have Patricia, Yuko, and Yori to worry about.” She blinks. “Me too, I guess?”

“What,” you chuckle. “Do you think I take my job lightly? Not everybody can manage to be the best friend, you know.”

“Don't flirt too much with Nina now,” Yuko pipes up from the front.

“What,” you grumble, “I can't talk to people without it being called flirting now?”

Eventually, the group returns to the inn. Everybody had a good time, despite not finding anything to do. Sometimes, a nice chat with people is fine too. But now you've learned that Shina's taking a temporary leave of absence from the harem. You aren't sure how to handle that yet. But as long as she still likes Hiro, there is a way of getting her back into the Harem Express, all expenses paid.

You rack your brain for some ideas, but nothing is coming out. You take a walk around the inn. Looks like they've just changed the signs for the public baths. You confirm that when some girls file out of the outdoor bath. As you pass by the public bath, you see Hiro absentmindedly pass through.

“Oh, Satoshi!” He perks up when he sees your face. “Aw, man. I just missed the gender signs. Do you know which one is the men's bath?”

“I think I'll just trust my instinct and guess before someone tells me off.” He shakes his head. “Well, wish me luck!”

You decide to let this one go and have the anime decide what will happen for you. He chose the indoor bath. Though he can't see you from behind, you do a slow salute in memory of your friend. In seconds, you can hear a ruckus from inside. You turn around from the baths and cover your eyes for what's to come. Hiro, dashing straight out into the hallway, makes a break for his room while a few angry girls clad only in towels chase after him. No doubt, if you stopped to gawk, they could have – and would have – hurt you.

Hiro will probably be occupied until he gets that misunderstanding cleared up. Looks like you got some time for yourself. Heading to the outdoor bath, you undress and towel up. After a wash, you dip into the steamy water and let your muscles unwind.

Someone else joins you. Peeking open your eyes, it's... Patricia.

What the fuck. So you tell her your most sincere thoughts in the heat of the moment. “What the fuck.”

She takes a moment to register that a boy called out to her in the bath. “Oh my GOD. IT'S A PERVERT, AAAAH!”

“Actually, you're the pervert here.” You have the decency to turn around. “This is the men's bath. So, can you get the fuck out already?”

A staff employee enters the premises, lifting up the curtains to the bath. “Did anything happen? We heard a loud noise from here.”

Oh. Uhhh.

“Sorry,” you say, placing a gentle hand to her head. Then, you dunk her underneath the water and turn around. Looking at the staff dead-on, you point over to the entrance with your free hand. “I think somebody got confused that this was the women's bath. Before something happens, could the staff put up the signs? I'd rather not risk having another heart attack.”

The employee jumps, looking back at the entrance. “Oh, I'm terribly sorry. I'll go put them up immediately. Thank you for pointing that out!” He rushes out to go fix the mistake. You let go of Patricia's head, and she comes up gasping for air.

“Hey, what are you doing!?” She hisses angrily, “You just–”

“I just saved your ass. Why did you even enter the men's bath anyway?”

“The signs from before said this was the women's bath!” Patricia sputters out, scooting to the other side of the bath. Even in the bath, you can't relax for one fucking minute.

“Did it occur to you that maybe, just maybe, they rotate the indoor and outdoor baths?” You're tempted to give her a noogie but at this rate that might lead to something unfortunate. “Now, leave the bath before they start coming in, okay?”

“Y-Yeah.” Patricia readjusts her towel before hurrying out. “Sorry,” she says as she exits.

You sink lower into the bath and blow furious bubbles. You wait a good five minutes before leaving the bath. Gotta make sure that Patricia left a hundred percent before changing. Throwing on one of those complimentary robes the bathhouses give away, you head outside to get some cool air.

Hiro's outside as well, taking a look at the evening sky.
>>
“Yo, Hiro.” You greet your friend. “Did the bath go well?”

“Nah... I guess wrong. I never seem to get lucky in that regard.” He chuckles. “What about you? You seem all cleaned up!”

“Yeah man.” Ignoring the part with Patricia, it was almost relaxing. “It was alright. Whatcha doing out?”

“Checking out the sky. The view is pretty nice from here, right?” Hiro grins, waggling a flier around. “Looks they're setting off fireworks today! I think we can watch from the beach. Wanna come? It's starting really soon, actually! I've already invited everyone else.”

“Pass. I actually want to get some sleep.” Though you might watch from afar to see if anybody does something suspicious to Hiro, you don't really want to join. You've never liked fireworks. Too loud and bright.

He actually looks a little hurt. “Come on. Please? Everyone else is coming! It'd be a shame if you didn't come as well.”

But that's the problem, isn't it? We apparently know that we are an anime character, the comic relief one at that, yet most of our actions for the last two quests at least were rather rational and thought-out. We aren't really acting as the comic relief all that much, at least not from what I know about comic relief characters in anime, and I've watched my fair share.

So what is to say that we can't just walk up to Yori if she looks troubled and confront her about it? Especially if she really did confess to Hiro, because as far as we know right now this could probably lead to the destruction of the entire world!
>>
>>45950020
We act as the comic relief when we're on-camera, but when we aren't we do all our nice, logical stuff.

>Go

Yeah. You suppose you'll go. Time to close out the day with one last event. Hopefully, nothing important happens so you can clock out early. Though... you really need to speak to Yori. You haven't seen her at all today. And with the suspicious meeting with Hiro, you definitely have some questions for the girl. “Yeah. But you owe me one for this!”

Hiro slaps you on the back goodnaturedly – and not with the force that Yuko has. “How many times have you owed me one? I'd say you owe me... like twelve!”

“Hah. I'll just round down so we're even now.” You chuckle. “So are we going to watch the fireworks or what?”

His eyes widen in realization. “Oh, right! Let's go!”

You meet up with the rest of the group,or at least, most of them. Yuko is off wading in the water, running about and Yori is nowhere in sight. Everybody else is here. Nina comes over, waving to you. “Hey, did you figure out the problem?”

You scratch your hair in irritation. “No. I was a little preoccupied. Things sure have a way of getting out of hand quick. All my plans get ruined two-fold. I feel like I have more problems that I started with today.”

“I have no words to comfort you with,” Nina shrugs. “Best I can offer is a 'good luck,' but I'm sure those are empty words.”

From the side, Hiro ushers in Yori. Hiro's looking rather nervous. With a rather uneasy smile, she calls your name. “Satoshi... err, we should talk.”

The first firework explodes into the air. You exhale sharply and rub your temples with your index fingers. “Can it wait just a second?”

She looks like she's about to cry. But, with the tiniest voice, she whispers, “No.”

You immediately pay the fireworks no mind. This is the first time you've heard Yori with a voice like that. And you're not talking about a timid voice. You're talking about a voice that has resolve to it. She clenches her fists – her hands are shaking nervously. “Yori?” You ask gently. “What's wrong?”

“Can we talk? Just you, me, and Hiro?” Yori lowers her head. “It's very important.”

“I wouldn't have said no, you know that?” You smile weakly, but all it does is make her tear up a little. You drop the smile. “I'm going.”

Yori and Hiro lead you up to the stairs at the inn. She stops you halfway, clutching at the railings. She looks like she has something to say, but the poor girl is shaking all over.

“Yori, tell me what's wrong.” Though, since she brought over Hiro, you can guess what she's going to say. “Is it about Hiro? Because you know–”

“It's... not about Hiro. It's about you.” Yori sniffles a little, wiping away her tears with the sleeves of her shirt. “Every time you smile, I can see how unhappy you are. I want to see the Satoshi that smiled with us when we were young. I can always tell that you're holding back on us. The way you don't like to talk about school anymore, the way that you stopped caring about books, the way that you... pretend to be so happy!”

You swallow your spit. “I don't–”

“You can trust us!” Yori cries out in between sobs. “We're here for you!” Hiro steps in to try and calm her down, but he has no idea how to do so. He gives you a worried look – one that tries, in vain, to console you.
>>
“I trust you guys. But apart from that...” You trail off. “I don't have any more to say.” You breathe in deeply. Gently, you murmur, “Yori. I trust the two of you. More than you guys know. And I'm not sad. I've just changed. That's all there is to it.”

Yori listens quietly. She covers her face with her sleeves, hiding the tears away from you and Hiro. She waits until she stops sniffling, wiping her eyes one last time. “Then hear me out, one last time, Satoshi.”

“I'm listening,” you say solemnly.

Then Yori, your childhood friend, whispers, “I love you.”

And, with perfect timing, the second firework drops – even bigger than the first. A bright explosion of blue and white scatters the sky and shrouds the stars. And just as fast as it came, it disappears.

And so, you break off into a run. Or at least, that's what you want to do. But instead, you stand there, unable to say a fucking word. Not waiting for a response, Yori turns, taking a slow walk up to the inn. You're unable to follow. You just stand there, underneath the quiet sky awaiting the fireworks.

EPISODE 4 - END.

On the roof scene, she did say we were going to like the Courage test, she said multiple times for us to join track and become captain, and that she while she does flirt for shits and giggles, she does like him cause he's genuine with his kindness. So she could like Hiro and us but how much difference is the thing.

>>45952252
Shit, how is this going to fuck up our friendship with Hiro? There's bound to be some money on Hiro liking Yori a tiny bit. And does he know that we're throwing the plot in loop? First Nina is getting all buddy-buddy with us, Shina is giving up, Patty is sort of a friend, and now Yori is officially gone. When's he going to start antagonizing us?
>>
>>45952359
There is no way Hiro is going to give us shit for it. One, he's oblivious as fuck. Two, he's our bro. Trust and compassion is his thing. Okay if he likes Yori we might have a problem.

I got a couple of theories for anyone that is still up.
Theory 1: This is the anime adaption of a one shot. It explains why all the big events like valentines day and the beach episode are so closely packed together. This is a test to see how well a new premise (protagonist is in a _____ scenario and he knows it). Time constraints also explain why we have been confessed too so early on.

Theory 2: Yori is actually a lot more sick then we thought and is going to die soon. This also explains the early confession. Whoever is controlling things behind the scenes is trying to build up our character and artificially extend the run of the show by affecting us psychologically. This can be seen as lazy writing by the viewers and also a punishment for us because we keep mucking things up.

Possible solution: Force a genre shift. Get into fights on purpose and turn this into a shonen. This will make it so that the director wI'll have us (and probably Hiro if we drag him into it) fight increasingly harder enemies over a long series of arcs. The pros of this is that shonens are long as shit in run time and the chance of a possible time skip will give us years of non TV time. The cons are that we will be putting ourselves and our friends in danger. Secondary con is that this will not save Yori if she really is going to die.
>>
>>45954110
Decoy protag?
>>
>>45954110
I support becoming a Shonen, though Nano may not want us to try it.

Even if we manage to pull it off, we'd just be killing the story and making it boring bullshit, which weirdly enough is what we want to do in-universe, but it will also kill it for us, the Anons.

Meta as fuck. We're the retarded audience for this shit. Maybe that's the twist Nano has, he's actually the director trying to change shit up to fit what "we", the "viewers" want.

We started shadowrunning about us being the secret protag? WE ARE. We think we're gonna steal the harem and be confessed to? WE ARE.
>>
>>45955369

I actually dont want to go shonen. For the reason that it'll put all we know and care for in danger.
>>
Hm. I think I had a some theories.

Theory 1. our bro here is think HE IS best buddy in harem's anime and try to support us (and failing miserably) to get us a girls. All of them.

Theory 2. Everyone here is aware about its anime, but no one knows exactly which one. Patty maybe think it's a mystery, for a Shina it's a romcom, Yuko - highly random slice of life etc.. Hiro is aware too and all his denseness it's just an act.

Theory 3. Hiro is protag, and soon we gonna get our obligatory fight/reconciliation with him. Either way it's gonna end in manly tears and bruises. And it WILL convert into shonen too quickly for us to realizing it.
