Ask Languid Anything: ask.fm/HellbornQM

You are Sierra Beckhoff, and you are the Imperiate – one true tyrant of the thousand hells.

Having won the elemental favor of the Great Lynx, you’ve returned from Canada to San Francisco, where you prepare yourself to answer the coming ire of your multitudinous enemies.

---

HP: 34/35
PP: 47/47
LW: 14/15

Sanity: 89/100
Stress: 15/103
Fury: 23

You weren’t really sure what you were getting into with the whole Native American spirit thing, but sharing a landwell with an ancient elemental has its perks. While you might not have sole control over the well, it does grant you a fleeting touch of the Great Lynx’s own considerable presence. In place of drawing from the land’s natural energies, you find yourself able to extend token powers foreign to yourself.

-Gift of the Lynx-
Enshrouding Mist
>When near a large body of water, a dense fog may be summoned to cover an outdoor area for a few minutes. This supernatural mist greatly limits visibility, and actively strives to keep you concealed. Its mystical nature allows it to diffuse 6PP worth of attempted magic from one target into the surrounding air. (Cost: 1 LW)
Current Mastery
>Knowledge of the tide and direction of waters within your territory comes as second nature. The waters know their master, and are under the sway of your will. (Bodies of water will follow reasonable commands to rise or fall, or quicken or slow in flow.)
ends.
>>
>>45928645

Drown
>When an invader to your domain is swimming without feet touching the ground, you may cause them to be pulled underneath the surface by a strong force. You (or one of your summons) must be by some means observing the invader to drown them.
Steam serpent
>You may summon idle shades from over the waters of Lake Superior to your side. Channeled through your fiery will, the placid spirits become superheated and enraged. Quick and agile, these flying serpents scald foes with their touch. As they deal damage however, they lose heat, until they dissipate altogether. (Summon cost: 5 PP; Limit: 3; Space Requirement: 1; Stats: 15 HP, nonphysical, flying. Damage: 1d5 scalding. Deals that much damage to self.)
Thirst for Vengeance
>Once every 12 hours, you may gain +20 rage.
Smoke Mimic
>You may summon a formless shade from the mists. The shape will take the shape and abilities of the first creature it encounters, though at degraded capability, and vulnerable to anti-magic effects. (Cost: 2 LW)

Besides your newfound mastery of tides, you feel somehow internally different. Your thirst for blood has been consumed by the fire within you. Stoked by the sacrifice, malice burns freely within you. Unlike before however, it bows to your command. You are now better able to manage your impulses to destroy.

Fury
>You are more able to harness your instinctual thirst for violence to your own ends. (Reaching 100 fury does not trigger a bloodrage)
>>
MY NIGGA
>>
>>45928659

“You don’t look as tired as you were yesterday,” notes Isaac, as you and the others roll your bikes through the dense, dry woods toward your well in Black Moshannon Park. You’ll be portaling home from there. You’ve been riding almost nonstop since you claimed the well. “The lynx really took a lot out of you.”

The sound of his voice and the memory of everything causes you to grit your teeth. (+2 Stress: 17/103; +2 Fury: 25)

>It’s like I drank a whole bottle of Mountain Dew: High Voltage this morning or something.

Yo lawn man that's already the case as of the unicorn gift when our bloodrage threshhold got bumped up a couple points.

Actually, it's always been the case. Reaching 100 exactly didn't trigger rages, it was exceeding it.

Woo, thought I was going to be late! not sure I like that fury counter.

>Thirst for Vengeance
Is the rage mentioned here actualy Fury or stress or is it something else?
>>
>>45928944
Oh. Alright then. I can go ahead and tell you that Fury is going to win. It kicks the shit out of all the other things there since half of them are situational upon fighting in/around deep water on mastered land and the summons are nifty but not game changing in the same way. And Thirst for Vengeance is theoretically neat with our powers that boost strength and stuff when we have high stress, but without Fury its not worth risking it t all.
>>
>>45929006
I think it's a case of languid changing the name of something after he writes the first update it's used in and forgetting to replaces all the old uses. He did the same thing with the cursed demon ball thing
>>
>>45928944
>>45929025

Preemptively, I feel like Smoke Mimic is a solid choice, with either Enshrouding Mist or Thirst for Vengeance being good second ones if we get to choose two.

I think we just get Fury, isn't that why it's separated from the others, and has it's own little paragraph explaining it as though we already have it?
>>

“More like I took a lot out of me,” you say, scowling. “Fake me was a huge jerk.”

“That entire situation was big surprise,” Borislav says, coasting carefully along on his motorcycle while Reeber trots along behind.

Isaac smiles. “Sierra handled it well.” The happiness is replaced with a hint of concern. “Everything’s coming back together okay, then?”

You frown as you take account of yourself. Your extremities are okay, but your jeans are still ripped up and bloodied. But your shadow-self still buzzes oddly on one side. “My shadow’s still sore, I guess,” you say. “But hey. No pain, no gain. Right, Ranthix?”

Ranthix hacks aside a low-hanging bough with his claws. Well, for him six feet is low, anyway. “WISDOM IS OFT WRAPPED IN PAIN. A LESSON YOU ARE WELL ON YOUR WAY TO LEARNING, SPAWNLING,” he replies.

You approach your landwell. Crimson light only you see is cast on every tree and inch of dirt in a broad circle about it. You feel a fluttering of wings above you as an owl takes flight at your company’s arrival.

Your dad is still a little bit on your case, though. “You might have pulled something,” he says. “I’ll have Deletrius to take a look at it when we get back home.”

Ugh.

[Hold your votes until all level up posts are out]

With the influx of power, you are stronger than before. Your increased might stretches your boundaries.

You gain the following ability:

Translucency
>You can allow light to pass through you for a short period of time, making you transparent. (1 PP/ sec when moving, 0.5 PP/second when still)

Psychotropic Venom
>Your fangs produce a non-lethal, but debilitating hallucinogenic venom.

Choose one selection from each type.

-Infernus-

Infernal Frenzy
>As you experience more and more rage, power of terrible proportions floods your body, lending you incredible strength. (When stress and/or fury reaches 70, your strength doubles)

Hastened Regeneration
>Nothing can keep you down. You heal faster than ever before, recovering from wounds even in the midst of combat. (Turn 4 PP into 1 HP per combat round – combos well with dark heart for rapid healing outside of combat)

Numbing Spite
>As your fury builds, you become less prone to being distracted or impeded by injury. At higher levels of fury, pain does not inflict stress gains, and you gain minor damage resistances.
>>
>>45929772

-Verwelken-

Intransience
>You can become much more difficult to move than you should be. When this power is active, you may expend PP to resist a force that would otherwise force her to change position. This only applies when an outside force is applied to your person. (Scaling PP cost)

Cutting Chord
>Stretch a razor-thin wire of darkness in front of you, and drive it forward at speed. Attack may be performed several times in rapid succession. Deals less damage to targets further out, but wider spread makes it more difficult to dodge (3 PP, damage modified by range and ambient lighting conditions. Slight AOE. Short to med range attack)

Way of the Crooked Passage
>Stepping of the Shadow now enables an instantaneous change of position from one shadow to another, if you are merged with that shadow. Destination shadow must be within manipulation distance. (Scaling PP cost dependent on distance and ambient lighting conditions)
>>
>>45929772
Clarification requested: if we have 71/71 stress/fury, does that quadruple our strength?
>>
>>45929798

-Belphegoran-

Sap Strength
>Sap physical strength from a target, greatly hindering strength, agility, and endurance. Reduces resistance to damage. (Moderate cost, medium range, debuff)

Confuse Mind
>Cloud target’s mind, making coherent thought much more difficult than usual. Temporarily hinders cognitive skills such as perception, comprehension, reaction time, and dexterity. (Moderate cost, medium range, debuff)

Curse of Agony
>Instill pure suffering into a target, causing them to take increased damage from all sources and suffer severe penalties on all rolls. Any movement or action causes debilitating, agonizing pain. The curse persists for 12 hours or until removed. Requires intense focus. (2 PP to begin channeling, 8 PP upon successful completion, medium range, powerful debuff)

-Landmaster-

Bloodpack
>There is no longer a limit to the number of hellhounds you can summon. Each hound has a 1 space requirement.
Plains of Night
>Tiger gains access to your basic Verwelken abilities, and summons with 6 pp (Stepping of the Corner, animate shadow-self, etc)
Bone Horror
>You may summon a Bone Horror.

Frenzy seems really nice when it gets triggered. I just like the feel of Intransience, and it'll seriously throw off any bruisers we run into.

I prefer Sap Strength over Curse since it's quicker, but don't have any problems with Confuse Mind.

Bone Horror does sound badass, and Tiger would get some utility from it. But we have a lot of summon slots, there's a lot of problems that can be simply solved by tossing a dozen hellhounds led by the Reebs at it. Besides, Reeber would love to have more friends.

After we get a good night's rest, I'd like to propose we look into rearming ourselves. MP5's and their delayed roller lockback system are great for maintaining controllability while outputting high cyclic rates of fire, but considering that we're going to be going up against more beefy enemies soon, we'll need a bigger caliber. 9mm was almost completely useless against Axos' hide, and he seems pretty lowkey for what comes next.

I'd like to propose we get Harvey and Cassandra to get us a more powerful gun and possibly some custom ammunition; I'm talking military grade bullshit for top tier hell flavor bullshit. What I'd like to get in particular is a carbine length Bulldog with M948 Sabot Light Armor Penetrator rounds. It was developed by the US Marines to pierce armored Humvees and light aircraft. Practically speaking, a standard 7.45 grain 9mm has 570 Joules of kinetic energy. A standard round of 7.62 Nato has 3304 with a speed of 2437 feet per second. SLAP rounds fire at 4000 feet per second and can penetrate Level 4 armor, which is proofed against conventional 7.62 up to 30.06.

To put it into plain words, this ugly motherfucker would've cut Axos in half like a tin can, and it has at least 6 times the power of an MP5 with a comparable fire rate. Yet it is only 6 inches longer in length. What do ya'all think? In my opinion, upgrading our guns is the quickest and most efficient way to up Sierra's power, and we'll need a bit more of that in the threads to come.

I know nothing about guns. But if you say it works, you go man. Just remember we have some powerfully enchanted guns already. Enchantments are probably more important then traditional ideas about firepower, looking at Isaac's crossbow.
>>
>>45931738
Fucking hell I must be going senile. I would have sworn that you said the exact opposite last time this argument cropped up.
>>
>>45931693
hello /k/
>>
>>45931754
I'm not gonna touch magic guns. I'm just really concerned about Sierra's chosen primary, the MP5. I mean, we're facing dudes who shrug off hails of gunfire like it was a light rain. We can't really trust pistol caliber, personal defense weapons against that kind of armor. Furthermore, the magical guns we do have are situational. The Bulldog strikes a happy balance between firepower and usability, with the compactness Sierra needs to take to whichever situation she enters and the firepower to destroy light armored vehicles, and probably heavily armored demons. Again, standard 7.62 ammunition in the Bulldog will provide her with six times the joules force, and SLAP will make it just one step under an M2 "Ma Duece" 50 .BMG.
>>
>>45931820
It is simply the quickest and most efficient method of attaining more power. And with Isaac's ability to ignore the TFA, I anticipate this loadout won't be that terribly hard to attain. Lastly, interactions with Cassandra and Harvey have fallen in frequency. It would be nice to touch base with some them again, in a field of their expertise.
>>
>>45931754
different anon
Our guns don't really have enchantments that are that good. The best thing is the scope that pierces glamours and we can (and have) remove that.

Isaac's crossbow is bullshit powerful and was crafted specifically to use a bullshit powerful enchantment.

>>45931823
You know what's funny? If we had gotten Intransience we could combo it with our strength boosting abilities to pick up insanely large weapons and fire them without recoil affecting us at all.

Hip firing a battleship gun would be fucking hilarious.
>>
>>45931874

>>
>>45931823

>>
>>45931693

>>
>>45931900

>>
>>45931262
We should probably call Moriah as well, considering she was going to research this Spirit for us and then we just kinda did it.
>>
>>45931823
That's conventional logic, though. When magical creatures are involved, who says penetration is king? What if we're fighting some gribbly with a healing factor that seals up small clear-through holes in seconds but struggles with comparatively superficial coffee-cup-sized craters? What if we're fighting some summon that doesn't have organs, just blood? What if we're not on a deserted gun range in the middle of nowhere and don't want to worry about accidentally ventilating the four apartments behind the target?

But just because you don’t feel tired doesn’t mean that you aren’t tired. You’ve been on the road for more than a day. Somewhere in the middle of all that, you had to fight a duel with yourself. Your veins course with incredible power, masking your fatigue. You need a break for a while.

You head upstairs.

You run into Rowan, who leaves her room with a yawn and stretches her arms and wings. “You’re back,” she says. “How’d it go?”

“Mostly good,” you say, popping into your room for a moment to grab things to sleep in. You give the summary of events to her.

Ro leans in the doorway. “Wow. You’re pretty tired then?”

“Not really, but I think I need to act like I am,” you reply.

You chat a little bit more, before you head for the shower and Ro heads back to bed. Six is a little too early for sentient beings to rise to alertness.

You scrub the blood and sweat off yourself, change clothes, and head to bed. It takes some doing to fall asleep. Not to be deterred, you enlist the aid of your pre-calculus textbook. You don’t even remember falling asleep.

--

The night is thick. You can feel it. And the background murmur of shadow surrounds you.

HP: 34/35
PP: 47/47

Sanity: 90
Stress: 0
Fury: 10

You untangle your wings from the mishmash of blankets on your bed, and yawn. Your mouth is unpleasantly dry and your eyes resist your commands. Judging by the darkness and your empty stomach, you slept all day.

>You’re on a roll. Sleep all night.
>Stock up on snacks before going back to sleep.

>>

Then we use our magic to royally mess them up. The gun is useful against more mundane or less magically inclined targets.

>>Enough sleep. You need to go do stuff now, the night beckons. Get dressed.

Stuff like Wolf.
>>
>>45931916
The only rifle that suits Sierra's CQC focus is the automatic FG-42. It is fully twice the weight and more than one and a half times the size. It's practically a full sized rifle. A carbine length Bulldog will allow Sierra to combine it with off hand abilities, due to its compact length and rear distributed weight.

>>45931939
For such enemies, we have magical abilities such as hellfire, shadow spikes, etc. What we lack currently is penetrating power. In the fight against Axos, we used enormous amounts of PP only to inflict status effects and minor damage. Sierra herself is a walking meatgrinder against soft targets. Against hard targets? Not so much. That's why we need to upgrade. The MP5 doesn't really offer anything to Sierra in CQC that she is unable to do with claws or blades with this point. As a superfluous item, we can afford to replace it.

>>
>>45931939
Pretty much all demons that are hard to kill with guns are that way because of armor plating, not regen or other things. The ones who have weird gimicks like Philo or Wolf wouldn't be affected by any physical projectile in the first place so it's hardly a point against.

As for not wanting to inflict collateral damage, we can just choose not to bring it to residential areas, same way we can currently choose to not bring fucktons of C4 on missions where it's inappropriate.

Sierra's only superhumanly strong while burning PP or in a bloodrage.

If anything, it being sentimentally valuable would make it less desirable for actual use since we have no clue what the thing does that makes it supposedly good.
>>
>>45932110
One that we know nothing about, can'torce to do magic, and still, twice the weight as well as one and a half times the length. It's a two handed weapon, no buts about it. In situations where we know what to expect, it will definitely stand above conventional firearms in its magical capacity. But in stealthy operations or CQC where length, size, and modern attachments such as suppressors come into play? The Bulldog is simply the better choice.

Regardless, Harvey is the enchantment guy right? He's practically a Celebrimbor. Probably.

I'd feel pretty bad about turning him into nothing more than an enchantment machine though. You feel like you want to do everything at the same time. But knowing your limitations, you decide to start with what’s closest. You head out of your room and see if you can’t find Harvey or Cassandra. Harv’s not in his room, which signifies that he is indeed someplace else, and perhaps even awake. You don’t know what time it is, and you forgot to plug in your phone, so you don’t know where people should be.

Heading down stairs, you find Cassandra reading a book on the couch, dressed up in PJs much as you were two minutes ago. You recognize the pair as the one she lent you the first night you stayed over. It seems like a long time ago.

Your mom puts down her book. “So you’re finally awake,” she says. “Vikrama called earlier on the landline, apparently your phone’s dead.”

It takes you a second to catch up with your thoughts. “What? Oh yeah. It’s charging or whatever.”

Cass takes a look at you, seeing you’re more ready to go do stuff than she is. “What’s up, kiddo?”

I don't actually know shit about guns, just that the AK is the meme gun of the world. Muh fire anywhere anytime. I figure it would get a bonus to resisting magical effects, if anything.

“I’m thinking about heading out,” you say. “I want to figure out the magic on David’s rifle, but I’m kind of crappy with enchanted stuff or whatever. Need to put time into that.”

“Didn’t you already figure it out? Harv said you figured out the scope on Orias,” she says, sitting up further and adjusting her tinted glasses.

You sit up on the couch armrest. “Well, yeah, but that’s like a detachable thing. There’s a bunch of weird Verwelken script on the stock and barrel. I don’t know, if anybody knows magic guns I guess I thought it would be you.”

Cass thinks this over, setting her book aside. “Well, you’re not wrong,” she says. “I’m not really a magic-type, but I’ve dealt with my fair share of imbued firearms. If we took it out to the range, I could see if there were any triggers for whatever spells are on it. We could head out first thing tomorrow, if Isaac doesn’t need my help with anything.”

That seems a little too easy for you. ”Why couldn’t Harvey figure it out? He molested the hell out of that thing.”

“Your brother’s only sixteen,” Cassandra reminds you. “I’ve been doing this since before he was born. Where do you think he learned what he knows?”

“Internet?” you say, so as to cleverly skirt over your lack of forethought.

She laughs. “Wrong answer.”

“Yeah yeah.” You pull one leg to yourself, carefully rubbing toe-claws over the leather couch. “Another thing though. What do I have to do to get a gun? Like, not just an MP5. Like, my own gun. One that’s illegal and stuff.”

“None of our guns are illegal,” Cass tells you. “The marshal’s office can appropriate any arms necessary to the protection of US citizens and territory under its jurisdiction.”

You snort. “You know what I mean. I want something that can put holes in junk. Something military grade. Like those Kriss guns Sattler was going on about.”

Cassandra wrinkles her nose at the mention of Sattler. “We have plenty to choose from downstairs,” she says.
>>

“I’m more just wondering if there’s something better for me. Like, I got swords and World War 2 guns, but I feel like I need an anti-tank rifle or something with some of these guys. Like they just shrug off 9mm.”

“9mm works so long as you keep your distance and put enough of them in the right place,” she informs you.

“Things don’t keep their distance and I can’t shoot worth crap without my glasses,” you complain.

“Yeah that’s... true, I suppose.” Cass considers the problem, sweeping her hair back and putting it in a ponytail out of habit. “You need something automatic then. Short barrel, but high-powered.”

“Uh. Sure,” you say. You don’t know that much about guns. You just pretend to.
“I’ll look around for you,” she says. “I think I have a few ideas. You should have told me you were having problems earlier, silly goose.”

If she gets salty over us trying to defend her and the rest of our loved ones then she can fuck right off.

I really like her and hopefully she'll understand this shit but she was saying she was afraid of us gaining power back before we found out about every single east coast asshole gunning for us. If the changed circumstances and our newfound self-control don't at least let her accept that this was necessary, then...

Fuck, that reminds me.

If we ever get in fights with people we care about, we have to make sure their emotions don't taste good.
>>
Just a threadly reminder that there's like 500+ unclaimed wells on the west coast.

Silly goose? She’s worse than dad. “Your face is a silly goose,” you shoot back, unable to keep yourself from snickering. “Whatever. I’m going out. As... soon as my phone's charged.”

“Where to?” she asks, smiling.

You guess angsty teens everywhere balk at that question, but you’d rather have your parents knowing where you are if you come under attack and need backup. “Mori’s, if she’s awake. Maybe check in on Wolf. What time is it?”

“Ten o’clock,” Cass says.

Guess Rowan and Harvey being gone isn’t strange.

“Be careful out there. I’ve been getting calls in about goblin sightings from my people,” she tells you. “The locals usually act up around the end of summer, but with the whole conclave situation, it could be connected. I know you did that job for the magister a few months ago, so you know what they’re capable of.”

“Right,” you say.

“And say hi to Wolf for me.”

That gives you pause. “Uh... sure.”

“Be careful with him, too. Boys are more fragile than they let on,” she advises, raising an eyebrow at you.

She knows. (+3 Stress: 16)

>Execute tactical retreat.
>Probe depths of Cass’s alleged knowledge.
>She doesn’t know anything. You’re overreacting.
>Come clean while the ball's still in your court.
>Feign ignorance.
>Other (?)

oh, Sierra knows EXACTLY how fragile Wolf is. He's got the marks to prove it.

Whoops, that should be 3 stress.

Another one of those moments where we think they know something they don't and end up saying something we shouldn't.

I'm waiting on the journals to see if we get some more information to go on. If they haven't all been taken by now then another short wait won't hurt.

We have every right to take a consort, show no shame

>Be super sneaky
>Travel in shadow form and use our new shadow jumping thingy to do it
You know what else? I bet translucency makes it so we can take less damage from light in shadow form, since it makes light go through us instead of hitting us. Stack that together with the VE+IN shadow light-resistance thing and we might even be able to just wince and change back instead of instantly getting forced back in while in pain.

LIES ARE TOO STRESSFUL.

Besides, we haven't done anything to be ashamed of.

So this is where Cass shares stories about her sex life before she met Isaac, right? Detailed stories. In a pastebin.
>>
You stop your panic short. Just because she might know you scratched Wolfgang up a bit doesn’t mean she knows anything more than that. And if she does... well, she doesn’t feel mad to you, so you shouldn’t freak out.

“Yeah well... fool me once, shame on me,” you say, nonchalantly. “Sort of was his fault though.” He shouldn’t have been so... uh.

Cass laughs. “It happens,” she says. “If you ever have questions, I’m your girl.”

This is worse than talking to Isaac. Your cheeks burn. “Sure, um. Yeah I gotta go, bye,” you say, already on your feet and half-way to the door to the garage.

Your mom laughs you out the rest of the way.

Would Wolfgang be less in danger if next time we tried it while in shadow form? Not as much pointy bits that way
>>
>>45934901
I wonder if Wolfgang would be more willing to drop his glamours if it meant that he and Sierra could play "naughty witch summons an incubus"?
