Every story has an ending. Boy finds girl of his dreams, boy gets together with girl. Boy finds multiple girls of his dreams, boy ends up with harem who decidedly love-hates him. Boy settles with girl not-of-his-dreams, girl stabs boy in the chest with a cooking knife. You, however, are not that boy. You are not sure whether to be thankful or angry about that. But the fact remains that you are said boy's best friend and quite frankly, you are rather tired of it. That is not to say that you don't love him like a brother... because you do. But the moment he ends up with a girl, the story will be over, the curtains will draw, and everybody that you know and love will disappear forever into a sea of bad spinoffs and sequels.

So it is your duty as the main character's best friend to cock block him so you all don't get sent into story-oblivion. God, this fucking sucks. Your greatest deeds can be amounted to making sure your best friend stays a virgin. Basically, you are an asshole. You pray that when you finish high school, this little charade will be over and you can get on with your own life. But for now, you and your best friend are – and will – be tied to the hip.

Let's get this show on the road already.
>>
You are currently walking towards school, getting ready for another long day of unfortunate events. You meet up with Hiro and Yori during your way to school. Yori has a thick muffler wrapped around her neck. Looks like she's still recovering from her cold.

“Yori, are you sure that you should go to school today?” You say, raising an eyebrow. It's not even 8 A.M. and she already looks completely exhausted. “I think you could use the rest.”

“Don't push yourself, Yori.” Hiro adds sternly. “You should take care of yourself more. You can afford to take another sick day.”

She musters a tiny smile and shakes her head. “I'm okay! I'm just a little worn out from not sleeping well.”

“If you say so.” You won't tell her twice. Looks like Yori made up her mind about it.

“If you ever feel sick, go the the infirmary, okay?” says Hiro.

Yori nods. “Yeah.”

You and Hiro pass by Shina as you enter class. She, in response, flees to the other side of the class and buries her face in a book. Huh.

“Shina,” you call to her. She hides deeper inside the pages. “Yo, Shina.” Ignored. Oh, for crying out loud.

>Time to be a nuisance. Walk over to her desk and bother her.

What a cunt. And after we had such a heart to heart last time.
>>
While we're waiting, have some character descriptions.

Hiro: Your best friend and protagonist of this anime. Dense as a sack of bricks, but trusts you completely. Actually a nice guy.

Yori: Both Hiro's and your childhood friend. Kinda shy and tags along with the two of you a lot. Is like a little puppy. Also is weak physically.

Patricia: Transfer student.... she's blonde and stuff. She might hate you? You're not sure.

Shina: Class rep. You and Hiro have known her since junior high. She might not hate you as much as you thought. She works at a bakery.

Yuko: Track team captain. Pretty tall. You have no idea how to deal with her. Also, she initiates friendly punches with you and they hurt. A lot. Apparently, her Valentine's Day chocolates are poisonous.

Nina: You have no clue. She said she was some wife candidate for Hiro. She met Hiro at last year's festival or something.

>Time to be a nuisance. Walk over to her desk and bother her.

You drop your bag flat on your chair before waltzing over to Shina's desk, peeking over her book. “Oh, what a coincidence! I didn't know we were in the same class! You know what's funny, the time I saw you over at the bake– mmph.”

Shina, who put her book down, slaps a hand to your mouth. Girl's got some furrowed eyebrows right now. Her ears are burning bright red, “Alright, you don't have to blab your mouth to the entire class. Can't you see I need some privacy? I need some time to think about... yesterday. Right now, I can't even look at Hiro without going red.”

You push away her hand and speak in a lower tone. “Well, like I said before. I don't know if you have a chance or not, but if you're going to run away from Hiro, somebody might to steal him away, right? Or...” You pause dramatically, “I could just tell Hiro that you like him.” I mean, you'll never do that, but still.

“No, nononono.” She furiously shakes her head back and forth. “Don't do that, please.”

Hiro, from his desk, calls out to you. “Satoshi! Did you do the homework?” His eyes light up when he says you with Shina. “Oh, I didn't know you two got along now!”

You throw a smug grin his way. “Yeah! I've decided to settle our differences and be friends. Isn't that right, Shina?”

She turns directly away from Hiro but mumbles, “Y-Yeah, sure.” Class is starting in five minutes, but Shina taps your shoulder before you head to your seat. “Satoshi? Remember Nina, the student from 2C, right? What do you think of her?”

>”I have no real opinion of her. Never talked to Nina directly.”

Seriously, either she has issues or...

SHE KNOWS
>>

She did say "potential wife candidate" so it is possible she does have some sort of understanding. She likely has her own set of win/loss conditions.

Win:
Get the guy or be a part the harem
Loss:
Loss the guy

I await the day she decides to talk to the anons and tell them to fuck off.

”She seems kinda suspicious. Who even tells the class they're a 'potential wife candidate'?”

Shina opens her mouth to say something and sputters out, “She did... what!?”

“...Excuse me, do you even pay attention, class rep?” You motion to Nina's empty desk. “That's kinda the reason why the entire class was yelling their heads off when she came.”

“I, um...” she laughs weakly, “I didn't notice. I just wanted to ask you if you thought she was cute.”

“Weeell,” you drawl, stroking your chin. “I guess she's cute. But she's been trying to get her hands on Hiro the moment she set foot in this class. “I still can't believe you didn't notice. Why did you think Nina was crowding over Hiro's desk during Valentine's Day? But yeah, what are you going to do about it?”

“I'll... do my best!” Shina gives you the most vague answer in the world.

Well, whatever. Nina joins the class, taking the roundabout way to their desk. It's obvious that she's taking a little detour to meet Hiro.

“Alright, watch this.” You point over towards Nina. “Watch how she makes a beeline towards Hiro.”

And lo, she stops to chat with Hiro. Nina smiles warmly over towards your best friend. Hiro laughs and waves her goodbye.

Shina frets, glancing back and forth from Hiro to Nina. “How did I not realize?”

“Because, like Hiro,” you chuckle, “you're as dumb as bricks when it comes to interpersonal relationships.”

“Do you want me to smack you?” Shina replies icily. “Because I can do that.”

“Face it. You're dense. That's what makes you cute.” To the viewers.

“I'm... cute?” Shina blinks.

“If you don't hit me, maybe.” Well, yeah, she'd be cute. Because otherwise, she wouldn't be a part of this anime. “Just gotta show everyone you're cute.”

“...I guess.”

With that, the bell rings and you head back to your seat. English is starting. Today, the class is going over predicates and subject-verb agreement. Stuff that you already know, so instead you'll bother someone else. Someone like Patricia. She's absorbed into her textbook... haha, not likely. Inside the textbook pages is a smaller book. From the corner, you can make out the author to be Agatha Christie. Ooh, mystery novels. You loved that stuff as a kid. You're actually surprised she can read that kinda English though.

>Ask her if she likes mystery novels.

You twirl your pencil idly, leaning back on your chair. “You like mystery novels, Patty?”

Immediately, she's sucked out of her book-world and comes careening back into reality. “Eh!? Uh, I dunno, why ask me?”

You say nothing but instead look straight at her textbook that she's holding tightly to her chest. You smile. “Just a friendly question.”

“Well,” she breathes, slapping her textbook back on her desk. Patricia, after sticking a flowery bookmark between the pages, tucks her book inside her bag. “I love murder mysteries, but there aren't any good ones here. I go out of my way to read things from America.”

“English books aren't really hard to find, if you know where to look. Ever read Murder on the Orient Express? That's probably my favorite Christie book.”

“Yeah. I think I've re-read it twice now.” Crossing her arms, Patricia leans over to you. “I never expected you to like books. Aren't you... a little bit too dumb for that?”

“For your information,” you scoff, “I just don't do well in tests. Also, I don't do homework.”

“Why,” she sneers, “because you're a genius?”

“No.” You rest your head on your arm. “Because it doesn't matter to me.”

“What do you mean by that?”
>>
You don't answer – the teacher cuts you off. He scolds you to sit up straight and you do so. Nothing particularly interesting happens until lunch, so you won't bother going in detail about how much nothing you did in gym class. Yori joins you with Hiro and the three of you settle into lunch. Patricia, looking around, quickly rushes over to your group and fidgets for a bit.

“Just what are you doing here?” Your lunch time is precious. Patricia has no business here.

“Could I join you guys?” Lowering her head, she murmurs, “I-I don't really have a group to eat lunch with.”

>Let her i–
>Tell her n–

“Sure!” Hiro grins, waving her over. “That's fine by me. Come scoot a table over.”

Patricia, completely ecstatic, grabs her lunch and joins you all for lunch. Oh. Right. Main character privilege. But now that Patricia's joining, the rest are sure to follow. And as you predicted, Nina wordlessly brings another table over.

“...Isn't it getting crowded all of a sudden?” You speak to empty ears.

“Um, I'll join too!” Shina speaks up, face in full blush. Still, she doesn't back down and moves over the sixth table to your group. Somebody send help. Hiro looks a little nervous.

And Nina, going on the offensive, takes her chopsticks and raises a piece of her omelette up to Hiro's mouth. “Hiro, say, 'aaah'.”

What a fucking ruckus. The other girls are getting a little frustrated and it's only been two minutes since lunch started.

>Incite some competition. Tell Shina to feed him too.

You lean over to Shina and whisper to her, “Are you just gonna let her do that? If you're not going to do anything, nothing will change.”

“Yeah, but what can I do?” She grumbles.

“If anything, you could do the same thing she's doing,” you helpfully offer your suggestion. “It beats doing nothing and letting Nina do as she pleases.”

“Are you crazy!?” Shina looks over to her chopsticks and seasoned rice. “That would be... an indirect k-k–”

“Kiss, yeah,” you finish her sentence for her. Otherwise it might take days for her to spit out the words. “Not a big deal.”

Shina glares at you, but takes some rice and nudges Nina out of the way a little. She lifts up the chopsticks and turns away. “Hiro, here.”

And here comes the army. Patricia scrambles for her food, Nina's attempting to gain access to Hiro's lap, and Yori is busy trying not to die. Poor Yori – she's cowering in her chair. Hiro, suddenly being stuffed with food, tries to say something but is quickly showered with more food in his mouth. You do nothing but watch the consequences of your actions. You feel pretty bad for Hiro but it's for the best.

As if sensing the harem pile up, Yuko comes running through the class with her lunch in hand. “Oh, is this a new game? I wanna join!” She shoves some of her bread into Hiro. And so, the show ends with your protagonist lead dying by the hands of his harem. He's pretty much passed out now, face flat on the table.
>>
“So.” You face yourself towards the track team captain. “Why are you here, Yuko?”

“I'm glad you asked, Satoshi!” She smacks a flier straight into your face, palming your nose. Agh, fuck. “The track club is hosting a test of courage tonight at the school! You all should come. And by 'should come,' I mean you guys are definitely coming!”

“Uhh. Why is the track club hosting a test of courage of all things?” you question Yuko. “Shouldn't you guys be hosting... I dunno, a track meet?”

“No more questions!” laughs Yuko, smacking your back. Fucking ow. “Just come! It'll be fun. I promise!” And as soon as she arrived, she leaves running out the door, presumably to terrorize other classes.

You eye your best friend warily. “Well, what do you think, Hiro?”

“Sounds like fun,” he groans. Yori is worriedly patting his back. “Ask me again when I'm a little bit less dead.”

“Test of courage?” Patricia laughs hollowly. “Sounds. Fun.”

Shina looks around. “We don't have to go, right?”

“Of course not.” You give her a sly smile. “That is, if you're a chicken.”

“I'm not a chicken!” Shina fumes. The rest of the class looks over in surprise. She sinks down in her seat. “I-I might be busy tonight.”

“Oh, okay. I definitely understand. Don't worry about it!” You reassure her, folding your arms and flapping your elbows up and down like wings. “Nobody will think less of you if you don't go.... cluck cluck.”

Shina swallows nervously. “Fine. I'm going. But don't you dare call me a chicken!”

You salute her. “Will do.”

Patricia coughs. “I'll go too.”

And Nina, for the first time, looks a bit flustered. “...I will go.” Oh? That's interesting. You better remember that.

“If everyone's going, I have no choice but to go as well,” says Hiro, still in agony over lunch.“If my stomach doesn't kill me first.” That just leaves Yori. Girl looks like a deer caught in headlights.

Shina hmphs and crosses her arms. “If I'm going, you have to go too Yori. There's no escape.”

Flustered, Yori looks over to you for help. You give her a shrug and a flat stare. “...Okay.” She looks like she's about to cry.

“That settles that. Yuko got herself some victims.” The bell rings – your precious lunch time is over. Your and Hiro see Yori off as the class settles back into place. Today is another long day of math. Maybe you should just ditch.

>Ditch class and go hang around the roof.

Yeah. You're not staying around for math, of all things. You'd be better off watching paint dry on the roof or something. And that's exactly what you're going to do. There's little to be done during class. Even Nina can't disrupt the class once math starts.

You take your bag and head out. But before you can leave, Shina yanks you back inside. “Well, hello, class rep!” You exclaim.

“Just where do you think you're going?” leers Shina. “We have class right now.”

You roll your eyes at the girl. “I have to use the bathroom.”

“...With your bag?” She questions impatiently.

“Oh, this thing? I forgot I had it on me.” You swing the straps around Shina's shoulder and break off into a run. “Hang on to it for me, thanks!”

“Hey, wait!” But Shina can't stop you, else she'll be absent for class herself. You scramble to the second floor before slowing down. Nobody will chase you this far. Besides, all the teachers patrolling around are in class now. You briskly walk up the stairs all the way up to the roof. You're hit with a blast of air. Ahh, freedom. Or so you thought. You see a familiar figure. A third year. Oh. Oh no. Yuko turns around, lighting up when she sees you.
>>
“Oho? What do we have here? A delinquent skipping class?” She smirks, leaning back on the railings of the roof.

“You don't get to talk. What are you doing here?”

“I don't like class.” Yuko says simply, raising her arms behind her head.

“Well, then we have something in common,” you mutter, sitting down and resting your head on the back of the railings. “While we're here, let me ask again. Why are you doing a test of courage again?”

Yuko stares at you like the answer is right in front of you. “Because it's fun?”

“And the track members just said yes?”

“Why wouldn't they?” She winks at you. “Their captain asked, so of course they'd say yes!”

You shake your head at the girl. “I think you have too much power in the club.”

“Don't like it? Join the club and take over.” Yuko says with a prideful smirk. “But are you coming to the test of courage?”

“Yep. I'm going with Hiro and co.”

“Fantastic!” Yuko claps excitedly. With a knowing smile, she adds, “I think you will just love it.”

“Yuko, is this some kind of elaborate ploy to get Hiro into track?” Though it's unlikely, you wouldn't put it past her to think of something like that.

“Ahaha, no.” She does a twirl, waltzing around the roof. “I don't think something like that would convince Hiro. It'd be nice if did eventually join, though.”

“So why do you like Hiro anyway? What'd he do for you?” You stretch your legs and lean back fully on the railings. Just being around Yuko tires you out.

“He's kind.” She gives you a big-ass smile. “Probably one of the most genuine people I know. Since last year, he's been helping all the sports clubs when we were undermanned. I like that in him.” Then, with a hearty laugh, she adds, “Plus, I can't imagine how the girls in the team would react if he showed up in the track uniform! They'd swoon!”

You narrow your eyes. “Is that why you flirt with him in public? To see how the girls would react.”

Yuko shrugs. “A little bit, yeah. It's fun! But don't say that I'm a phony. I mean what I say.” She leans over you. “What, you jealous?”

“I'm going to throw up.” You scoff. It'd be way easier if she didn't butt in all the time.

She goes and ruffles your hair. “Awww, you're jealous.”

“Yes, whatever, I'm jealous. I don't care.”

“Jeaaaaaaalous!” She sings.

“You're a bother. Go away.”

“Sure.” She opens the door to the stairs and disappears off, probably wandering the hallways until school ends. You're fine staying here, away from that girl.

At least she didn't punch you today.

When the last bell rings, you sneak back into the classroom. An angry Shina is waiting, holding your bag.

You're going to pretend that nothing is wrong. “Oh, hey thanks! I was looking all over for it!”

“Satoshi! You know you can't skip class! The teacher scolded me because I let you run off.” Shina puts two indignant hands on her hips.

“Sorry, sorry.” You bow to her a bit, grabbing your bag. You offer her two of your biggest puppy eyes. “But hey, I'm grateful that you kept my bag safe. I owe you one?”

“Yeah,” she sighs. “I don't really care anymore. Just don't do it again.”

Swinging your bag over your shoulder, you reply, “I won't make any promises.”

You head back to your home first and phone your mom. She's at work, but you should probably tell her that you might return home late. You ring her number and wait until she picks up. “Hey, Mom?”

“Hello? Satoshi?”

“Yeah, it's me. I won't be back until late night, maybe. Track club is hosting a test of courage event and I'm going.”

Your mom pauses. “...Why is the track club hosting a test of courage?”

You laugh. “That's what I said. But yeah, don't be surprised if I'm not there when you come back.”

“Okay,” she says. “Try and not to be too much of a little girl then.”

“Whatever, Mom. Love you, bye.”

>Take the boredom walk around town.

Nothing else to do, why not go around town until they finish preparing the test of courage? Damn, sometimes you wish the events just came to you. When the viewers aren't centered around you, there's a lot of nothing to do. Then again... if the events came to you, then they'd probably be events you would fucking hate. Two sides to every coin, you guess. You take your jacket and head out.

You walk by a blonde-haired person. Stopping, you take a look back. “That you, Patty?”

The girl jumps, looking around in confusion. “Eh?” When Patricia spots you, she sighs. “Oh, it's you, Satoshi. Hi.”

“What are you doing right now?” you ask her.

Patricia seems a little hesitant to tell you. She stuffs her hands in her pockets, murmuring to herself. “Promise you won't laugh?”

You raise your right hand. “Yeah. I promise.”

“I... had nothing else to do, so I was walking around town until the test of courage.”

You snort involuntarily. Haha, that's funny and sad at the same time, if only because you were doing the same exact thing.

“Don't laugh!” She huffs, scowling. Patricia paces back and forth frantically. “I'm just a little worried about the event, is all.”

“I'm only laughing because I was doing the same thing, you know.” You usher her to walk around with you. “It's pretty boring off-cam– it's boring in this town.” Whoa. You almost casually let it slip.

“It's a nice town, though.” Patricia smiles, brushing aside a lock of stray hair. “The place is always so sunny and bright. It's... homely, I guess.”

“I don't see it, but you're entitled to your own opinion.” You can only offer her a shrug.

“Way to ruin it.”

You smile falters a bit. “I'm pretty good at that.”

She tilts her head. “What now?”

“Ruining things.”
>>
>"Ruining things."
Damn.
>>
When the sun starts dipping below the horizon, you and Patricia start heading towards the school. It's really different at night – the entire place has an ominous feel to it. There's a huge crowd – holy shit, was this test of courage thing really that popular? Why is this popular? You can see Hiro in the back with a couple of other people.

“Alright, everybody!” shouts Yuko from... somewhere. “I hope you're ready for the scariest test of courage that the track club has ever made! Mostly because it's the only test of courage we've ever made! Now everybody, go file in! If you can make it up to the fourth floor and back, you win!”

“Win what?” asks a person in the crowd.

“The test of courage, duh?” Typical Yuko. “Now we're going to separate you into groups!”

You're chosen to be with Group B, which is... Hiro, Yori, Patricia, Shina, and Nina. What the fuck. “Yuko!” You scream. “This is rigged!”

“It's not a contest so I do what I want!” She guffaws. “Now, choose a pair!”

“Okay, I choose Hiro–”

“Girls only!”

What the hell.

Alright. You're sure that everybody but Nina will be way too scared to do anything. The only factor is if Yuko does something... but she's Yuko. You aren't sure if you can stop her from doing anything anyway. So... “Nina, you're coming with me.” She covers her face like an arrest convict. “Alright, I tried. Yuko, can I go yet?”

“Nonsense!” She cackles, slapping you past the entrance. “You two go have fun! And if you don't... consequences!”

You start walking forward, muttering to yourself, “What does she mean, 'consequences'?” Nina starts walking ahead of you, though it's more of a frantic jog. You do your best to catch up. “Hey, wait up.” As you pass through the hallway, the lights all flicker off. Nina stops where she is.

“Eep.”

You blink. “Uh, 'eep'?” Then, with a clatter, all the windows in the hallway clack open and shut abruptly. Hah, lame. However, Nina's frozen solid. You approach her gingerly. “Nina, are you alright?”

With that, she breaks off into a full sprint, screaming into the night. “AaaaaaaaAAAAAAAA!”

You rub your nose in weariness. “Jesus.” Then, after a quick stretch, you chase after her into the darkness.

You find the girl huddled underneath a single dim light. With small steps, you approach Nina. Don't want to scare her or something. “You alright?”

She sighs. “I'm no good with these things.”

“I'm not going to judge. But you're not getting out of here unless you stand up and walk out.” You motion for her to get up.

“I would but my legs gave out.” Her usually stoic face is mixed with fear, anger, and disappointment.

“So, what? Need some help?”

“No.”

>Offer her your hand.

You stick out your hand and wait for Nina to grab it. “Let's just hurry up. Don't you think it's better to get it all over with instead of dragging it out? Come on.” Nina gingerly sticks out her hand but shies away. Impatiently, you throw your jacket off and put it over her. Reaching out and grabbing her hand, you pull her up. “Follow me, you scaredy-cat.”

You wonder where all the confidence she had while facing Hiro went. You pulling along a scared Nina wasn't even close to how you thought this would go. You'd imagine her to walk along unfazed until you reached the end of the test of courage. But here you are. You thought for a second that she might be faking it, but the look in her eyes says otherwise. On the second floor, there's a low moaning sound and a loud banging noise inside the classrooms, but you hurry along and drag Nina along.

She sticks close, covering her eyes with your back.

At this point, you can't help but make a joke. “Sucks that I'm not Hiro, huh?”

“Please die,” she says, spitting out the muffled words into your back.

You sober up for a second. You wonder if the same result would have happen to Hiro had she went along with him. Granted, you weren't sure whether Hiro got a choice on who his pair was, but still. You feel relieved. You also feel unnerved by Nina, but that's another thing.

Third floor. The moment you step foot into the hallway, a blood-curdling shriek echoes throughout the area. Now, you're not the type to get scared but a cheap-jump scare like that gets a jump out of you. Nina, on the other hand, shrinks to the ground again. “Alright, Nina,” she mutters to herself. Aah, she's losing it. “This isn't befitting of you. Tough it out... tough it out. You're the main girl, here.”

Main girl... huh? That's an awfully familiar term.

“Yes, you can be the main girl, and I'll be the comedic buttmonkey best friend.” You usher Nina back up. “Done talking to yourself or can we advance the plot already? Nobody likes this part of the show.”

She falls back on her butt. Squinting over at you, she asks, “What do you mean by that?”

You're not going to tell her anything, but you can confirm your suspicions if she knows something. “I don't know about you, but we should get this over with. I'm not really here to take care of you, y'know.”

“...Is that why you're always in the way?” asks Nina.

“Not necessarily.” You take a few steps into the hallway. “I'm pretty much the stereotypical best friend... but I like the status quo, as unfortunate that may be to other people.”

She inhales slowly through her nose. “So you know.”

“About what?”

Nina grabs your shoulder, stopping you from walking to the next floor. “That this is an anime.”

You turn around and level your gaze with hers. “Yeah.”

“Then,” Nina pauses, creasing her brow. “Why are you stopping me?”

“No, the real question is,” You jab at her accusingly, “why do you want to make us all disappear?”

“Disappear?” She parrots back. “What do you mean?”

You sit her down. “Alright, you're going to tell me what you know.”

Nina buries her face in her hands. “...You mean that this isn't a romantic comedy?”

“Are you an idiot or what?” You groan. “Why do you think the other girls crowd around Hiro all the time? Consider that fan-service is a given at this point.”

“We don't have much of a plot otherwise,” she replies, frowning.

“Yes, that's the point. Harem shows don't have a real plot. And now, what kind of harem show has a clear winner?”

Nina exhales slowly. “None of them.”

“Right. And if a girl wins, that's it. The show is over. We end prematurely and we get sucked into the magical world of shitty sequels and spinoffs. Nobody wants that. Especially not me, the best friend that nobody wants in the show.”

Nina nods slowly. “Then, what's your plan?”

“Stop the girls from getting too close to Hiro.” You sigh. “That's about it. Every day, I just kinda... wing it and hopefully things go right. Still, I'm trying not to fuck everything up. I still want the girls to like Hiro. What kind of harem anime would it be without a bit of a tease, right?”

Nina stays silent. After a moment, she stands up and waits for you to come along.

You have more to discuss, but you'll ask Nina another time. Laughing, you tell her, “So, was that all an act or were you actually scared?”

“Are you kidding?” She glares at you. “I was scared out of my mind.”
>>
The two of you finally make it to the end, where the rest of the group is waiting. Everybody looks positively miserable, excluding Yuko. Hiro looks about ready to pass out, Yori and Shina can barely stand, and Patricia has the classic thousand-mile stare on.

“Congrats, Satoshi! You're the last one to make it!” Yuko grins. “And that means, I have a special surprise for you!” Pulling out her smart phone, she chucks it over to you. On the little screen is a video. A video of you and Nina going through the test of courage. Oh, shit, panic. You quickly lean close towards the phone to check if any of your conversation was picked up. Luckily, all you can hear is faint static.

However, that doesn't stop the rest of the group from checking out what happened.

Shina gasps, “Wow. Satoshi, I didn't know you could be so nice.”

“I have no clue what the hell you're talking about.” You decide to play dumb. You know you're going to get shit for this, but as long as the video didn't pick up your little talk about anime, you don't really care.

“Well, look at that.” Yuko covers her mouth. “I half-expected Satoshi to make a run for it alone!”

“Jump in a fire, thanks, Yuko.” You reply with a false smile.

“So,” Patricia speaks up. “What were you guys talking about while sitting down?”

>”Nothing much. We were talking about anime.”

>"We formed a demonic pact for unspeakable power."

You give off an evil grin, tilting your head to the side slightly. With a sinister chuckle, you speak. “We formed a demonic pact for unspeakable power.” Just then, the lights flickered out for a second. The darkness was probably scarier than what you said, but everybody lets out a scream... Nina included. Thank you, convenient anime timing.

Shina decides to let out her fear by giving you a noogie administered directly to your head. “You idiot! Can you not scare us like that!?”

“It was a joke!” You yell, scrambling to get out of her clutches. Eventually, you wiggle your way out and topple backwards onto Hiro, pushing him straight into Nina. He falls on top of her, just barely brushing against her chest. Hiro quickly jumps off, muttering out jumbled apologies.

Nina blinks and stands up, catching her breath.

“Nina,” you mutter under your breath, “Harem, remember?” She, in response, gives you a half-hearted smack. Good enough for now, you suppose. You weep a little. “Why me?”

Patricia frowns. “You did push Hiro into doing that, you know? Even if it's an accident, that's not okay.”

Man, you love double standards. “I don't know about you guys, but I don't plan on spending the rest of the night here in the school. Let's leave?”

Yuko waves. “Yeah, you can go. I need to wait until everybody is cleared out of this place for sure. Bye!”
>>
You wait until everybody clears out of the entrance. Well, everybody but Nina. She paces back and forth, worried. “We're going to talk more tomorrow. I told you what I'm going to do, but I expect you to tell me the same. I'd love to chat now, but it's late at night and I think the episode is going to end.”

“Yeah, we'll talk tomorrow.” She puts a nervous hand to her forehead. “I need to think about today.”

“Well, see you then.” You leave her behind and walk to your home. Theoretically, you could say that the plot thickens. But generally, you'd want the plot to be as thin as it could be.

Regardless, you only have one thing to say.

“Fffffffffuuuuuuuuuuck,” you breathe.
