General Gregarius of the Third Legion Warhawks, General Vincente of the Fourth Legion Wild Stallions, and General Julius of the Sixth Legion Golden Lions all walk into a bar. A succubus sits behind the counter, serving drinks in a top that pushes up her breasts, and perfume made specially by lust devils in the Pits of Pleasure. They chat for a bit, when suddenly the Generals begin to feel tipsy, only after a few sips of their wine. The punchline comes four months later, when the succubus gives them each a Soul Kiss, and extracts their mortal essence, only to reshape it and reintroduce it to their frail bodies, turning them into mindless thralls who serve her Lord Father. It's a dark joke, admittedly.

And now those three generals kneel before you in the middle of your busy training yard. Each brings with them a promise of twenty-thousand trained and able men, seasoned from years of conflict on the western border of Theon. They will force march nearly one thousand kilometers from their posts to join you at the command of their generals, for loyalty in the Theon armies is not bought with gold, but earned with wisdom and trust. The idiots.

Ayyyyy, glad it's back
Hope I got some good responses like that one I posted before I went to bed.
hmmmm
>Summon the Legions Immediately, and have them meet you at your border
Time for us to push back, also, start bringing in more trainee men/women from our country, get them some combat experience. We will take this country, take over the biggest palace, give our LTs each their own. And redistributes a little bit of the wealth, so the people love us and help solidify our position in charge.
>>
Also, we should see if there are any demons available/

You tell the three Generals to summon their men as soon as possible, and have them march east to meet your forces. They salute in traditional Theon fashion, placing their flattened palms over their hearts, and moving them as fists to the side of their cheeks. They scurry out of the training hall together, in perfect unison. You turn to Vanessa, who is all roses and sweets.

"I did good, daddy?" she half asks, half declares, tilting her head toward you. You confirm as much, and pat her head as a reward. Now with a total of seventy-thousand battle experienced troops, you might have a fighting chance against the enemy's forty-thousand, including siege weapons and any unknown threats they may have.

You keep your troops on mend for a few days, and are visited by Duncan in short time. He comes bearing his own gift, the rotting head of General Magnus of the First Legion Blood Wolves.

"I'm sorry it took so long, my dark lord, but on top of my duties as conductor of the spy network, my time was stretched thin. This man is, or was, the most feared leader in Theon. Without him, his Legion will splinter, and with any luck, fragment. Our most powerful adversary in this war is fallen, though for how long until a new General is elected to lead them, I cannot say."

Quite good. Duncan was even smart enough to place the head in a bowl before dripping blood and viscera all over your clean carpet. Perhaps a reward is in order for him as well.

You reach around Duncan's back and pull him in for a hug and a pat on the bicep, congratulating him on a job well done. He blushes fiercely, but does not resist. You send him back out to work in high spirits, and return to planning your next move in the war.

You have ten thousand men and women ready to fight already in your lands. You have sixty thousand more two months away. The enemy has forty-thousand troops ready to enter your lands, and potentially fifty-thousand more either in training, or being drafted. They also have a second border that is about to lose the bulk of it's defenders to defection. There must be a way to play this to your advantage.

You send word across your lands, all fighting men and women will report to the border for one last march. It takes three weeks to gather them all, and you are forced to fend off several raids from Theon in the meantime, but eventually your entire fighting force is gathered. Seven thousand foot soldiers, two thousand armored troops, and one thousand cavalry, trained to fire bows astride their mounts. With yourself, Legion, and Shen at the head, you march forth into hostile territory.

You are contested every step of the way, if not by the enemy, then by the terrain and weather. Rain slows you with thick mud, and the rolling gusts of the plains make communication a nightmare. You lose a fair number of men to ambush and head on skirmish, but your men are galvanized by you presence, and press on despite the trouble.

Finally, you can see the Capitol on the horizon. You let the men rest along a river, fully encouraging them to shit into the water which flows toward the city itself. In the meantime, you send Duncan and Kyle to perform reconnaissance and espionage.

You order Duncan and Kyle to infiltrate the city and make some noise to confuse the defenders within. They go with all haste, vanishing into the night like shades. Within hours, you hear the bells and klaxons of danger on the wind, and can spot at least two large fires. Fire is always so handy. By morning, Duncan and Kyle are returned, black with soot and wheezing, as well as splattered with blood. They also have with them a guest, bound in rope decorated with strange runestones that hang off like baubles.

"My dark lord. I spoke of potential defectors before, and here is my primary contact. This is Gilbert the Rabid. He is a master of rune magic, and has agreed to trade his freedom from the dark cells beneath the city for service to you.

You look over the man, ragged, hairy, and missing an eye. A proper mage is ever you've seen one.

You ask Gilbert about this weapon of his. He seems more than happy to share.

"It's a radical design I've toyed with my whole life. Using a single Maximized Rune of Force, and a rifled barrel intricately carved with Maximized Runes of Haste and missiles specially designed and built, and also absolutely covered in Minor Explosive Runes, we can create a weapon with the power to blow open gaps in fortifications and even collapse tunnels in a single blow!" He cackles manically, so much so that he begins coughing. When he's done, you ask what the catch is.

"The catch? The catch is that it's a terrible idea! Imagine the collateral damage! The loss of life! Thousand dead in a mere moment, why it's down right evil! Not to mention the fact that the thing would take months to build, and materials that are so rare in the mortal realm a single one would cost the price of a small country!"

Let's see if we can worm out any of his other talents before we offer a job, it would be just like a wizard to be hiding his healing abilities or forgery skills so he can name a price later.
>>
>>45842448
You ask him why you would bother employing someone who claims to be able to build a theoretical weapon out of materials you don't have to do something so mad.

"Because you're the only one who can make this weapon a reality! You have contacts that can obtain the materials and tools we need! Sulfur from the Pit of Fire, Aetheric Diamond to reinforce the barrel, Ironwood to build the base! You can make my dream reality! I can finally prove to those stupid savages that magic is not about what we 'should' do, it's about what we 'can' do! All the greatest minds of magic were cast as villains in the stories of barbaric heroes mindlessly swinging sword and axes to bring some ill conceived sense of balance to a world that yearns for innovation! What of the great sage Morioh? He was the first man to assemble a golem of flesh, and imbue it with sentient thought! Think of it, a living, thinking, feeling creation hewn from the blood and bone of the dead, a new form of life walking the earth, and they would slay such a beautiful creation! Burned it, and scattered its ashes to the wind and for what? Because it killed a useless girl? Because it ate human flesh?! What new idea has no faults? Has no cracks to be filled by generations of thinkers? And Morioh, why the man was slain in his own home, and left to burn with his notes and findings! Decades of research, gone! Because the ignorant masses can't wrap their heads around what true genius is!"

By now Gilbert is rolling and kicking in the dirt, but his point does make some kind of sense. You look to Duncan, who shrugs.

"He's a bit stir crazy sir. But I assure you, his work is skillful."

You order Duncan to remove Gilbert's bonds. He does so gladly freeing the old man and allowing him to shake out years of dirt and grime. The smell is nearly unbearable, but you don't need him to smell good to work. You ask him if there's anything he can do for you at the moment.

"Eh? Oh, of course. I'll need something to write with." You have someone fetch a pen, which he takes giddily. He picks a soldier at random, and has him lift his helmet so that he may write something on his forehead. When he is done, he caps the pen and excuses the subject.

"A mark of courage. Minor, but still good. have each man come to me, and so long as you have enough ink, I can bestow one on each of them. Might take a while, but without components I'm left with few options."

It seems having allies bolstered by magic makes even the common footman feel more confident in his ability to win. Ten pens later, Gilbert is done, and the sun is on the decline in the sky.

You'll have no reinforcements for two more days, but the sentinels and troops within the city will no doubt be readying themselves for battle now. The chaos caused by Duncan and Kyle will also subside before long, so you must decide your course of action quickly.

You divide your troops into three, assigning yourself, Shen and Legion to lead each, and sending them to block the main roads into the city. On the first day, you stop ten wagons. On the second, fifty. On the third, twelve. You let the drivers live, but confiscate the contents. You are not attacked by the enemy, and in fact they do little but post guards on the walls. It takes you some time to realize why they would merely let you block their food and goods, but then it dawns on you. They believe the three Legions approaching from the west are allies, coming to sweep you away like so much dust. They must believe they can simply wait you out.

Knowing this, you have the upper hand for once. When the three Generals are near, they each send a messenger to declare their readiness for battle. You shouldn't waste this chance at a surprise.

The city of Theon, Capitol of Theon, is built to withstand attack. Outer walls house sturdy defenses and troops, as well as protect the commoners. Breaching them will be difficult, but you have three routes to do so from. Past the inner walls, houses and businesses are built, and beyond them is the second wall, which is built on a hill, and houses sentinels and elite guards. Beyond this wall are the homes of the rich and powerful, as well as the military facilities. Finally, there is the citadel. A fortress of stone, with halls built to aid defenders in their duty. This will be the last push, and taking it will end the war.

You order each Legion to join one of your divided units, and ready themselves for a full on charge, taking the enemy by surprise. It takes them a few hours to get into position, and only near the end do the enemy realize they are not attacking you, but assembling with you.

When all is prepared, you give the signal, and all three gates are met with the force of thirty-thousand plus men. The gates hold for a good while as the defenders of the city rush to pour pitch and stones down onto the heads of your troops. You lose a good number, but in time the wooden gates splinter, and you are into the city.

Houses and businesses burn, blood flows in the street, and by sundown, the city is dead silent. Those who were not killed hide away in their homes, frightened and confused.

You tell the troops to rest, and once night comes, to begin helping the citizens harmed by the conflict. They rescue those trapped beneath damaged buildings, and feed the hungry. Though the citizens willingly take your kindness, it is clear they do not trust you. Still, they do not rise up, and for now that is enough.

You let the men get a good night's sleep and eat their fill, all while keeping close watch to make sure no enemy spies approach. You do inf act catch one, thanks to Duncan's sharp sense for espionage, but you can't be sure he was the only one dispatched. Come morning, all the men seem hale and hearty, and you march them onward, to the second wall.

Wall Augusta is high and strong, with gates reinforced by iron. Taking it will not be as easy as the first. You will need to either scale the wall, limiting the flow of men terribly, or find some way to breach the gates.

You summon Gilbert to your next meeting, and ask him if he has any idea for a way into the second wall. He scratches his tangled beard and thinks for a moment.

"I could blow the gates open with enough runes. Let's see, they're about this tall, so thick, and maybe...hm... Yes, about thirteen gallons of lamb's blood and a pound of gold dust should be plenty potent."

You begrudgingly ask why he would need these items.

"Lamb's blood makes excellent ink for runes, and gold naturally conducts magical energies. Most folk would tell you to use ink from a whitewood tree, but it flakes easily when it's dry, and this work will be slow and careful. Give me those two things, and some men who aren't afraid of heights, and I'll have those gates open in two days time."

You agree, and tell Duncan to help Gilbert gather everything he needs. In the meantime, you prepare your forces around the twin gates of the second wall, to ensure the enemy doesn't get any ideas about slipping out. You do not allow anyone in or out, even civilians, though you suspect some may be finding ways to get word through the wall somehow. At any rate, Gilbert gets to work, taking a few men to paint runes on the twin gates, first at the base, and then higher up, suspended by ropes secured with Duncan and Vanessa's help. The men are brave, and finish the work on schedule, before retreating back to camp.

On the morning of the attack, you behold he gates, decorated in blood and glittering gold taken from the city's treasury. The people are upset, though you're not sure why, since the gold was never theirs to spend, but no matter. You order the troops to ready for the charge, and give Gilbert the order to begin. He stands before your men, just out of the range of arrows and slings, both of which rain down missiles at his feet.

"Long ago, there lived a man called Patric of Lemant! A Pyromancer by trade, and a lover of the fine arts! He dreamed of a world consumed in flame, flickering and dancing in proud imitation of our glorious sun, and though he was cut down by those who bore him ill, I stand here today to show you what the passion that burns in a man can give to us!"

As the wind plays with Gilbert's messy hair, he raises a foot, and brings it down hard on a rune at his feet. It flashes, and scatters in the breeze. The runes on the gates flash as well, and suddenly there is a thunderous boom that knocks nearly all nearby on their backs, and causes your ears to ring fiercely. The gates themselves break and splinter like to much plywood met with a sledgehammer, making way for your men to charge, and they do.

You rush to the head of the charge, and are the first to cut down an enemy. A large man, screaming with rage, and wielding a warhammer. He lasted all of three seconds, and dies quietly.

The men troops follow you fearlessly, killing all who dare to raise weapons, often distracting them while allowing an ally to impale them from the rear with their spear. You're quite proud of such a fine display of teamwork. You yourself are able to kill just over a hundred, while Legion and Shen boast three hundred and two hundred twenty respectively.

By sundown, you are at the citadel, with a little over forty thousand man at your back. They are exhausted, but fiery.

You give the remaining forces within the Citadel one last chance to give up, and live. There is no sound from within the Citadel for a time, which you can only take as either a sign of deliberation, or refusal. Either way, you don't have time to wait and decide to simply take the last step toward conquest. You order your men to march forth, and they do.

Ten by ten, shoulder to should they advance, ready to break down the gates of the citadel and slay those who would oppose your rule. However, as they approach the gates, you hear chains and cogs from the other side, and see the wooden doors swing open slowly. The men back away from something, and make way for you to see what has emerged.

Two women, each tall and robust, decorated in silver and gold armor respectively, stand outside the now closing doors. The first, blonde of hair with golden wings protruding from her back, holds up a mighty tower shield and plants the butt of a lance firmly in the ground. The second, hair white as the moon, has not two but four arms, and holds both a greatbow and twin sabers. They peer around, and eventually their eyes settle on you. You feel a tingle as you sense the sheer density of magical energy permeating their bodies.

"Ye who would lay waste to this nation that has lasted a thousand years!" shouts the golden one.

"Begone from this place, or die by our hand!" shouts the second.

Your men look to you for an answer.

Lay waste? Nay, I am to control, even the wealth among the populace. I met the 'great leaders' of this place, opulent and residing in palaces. On my way here I passed the starving farmers and peasentry who scrambled for scraps. Judge me in any way you want, but do not accuse me of mere destruction. Power is my vice, one of which I am also eager to share and see grow. I was attacked at my boarders, my mine killed, my forts sacked. From no agression on my part, only retaliation.
I see a frightened nation grown fat, lazy and vicious of newcomers, how else could my small force hold fast from their attacks?
I have come to bring this opulent nation under my control.

You taunt the idols, and though their faces show no sign of impact, your men get pretty hype and start throwing shade like you wouldn't even believe.

The two idols step forward and level their weapons.

"I am called Juno, Strength of the Wall," recites the golden idol.

"I am called Augusta, of the Eternal Vigil." responds the silver idol.

You would tell them your name, but you sold it to a fiend for your sword, so instead you merely summon it, and let the fiery blade be your announcement. The idols brace themselves, but you are cut off from them as Shen and Legion step forward. Shen cracks his knuckles, and Legion draws his sword.

"My Dark Lord, do not give these cowards the satisfaction of seeing your power on display. Allow us, your servants, to dispatch them." Legion levels his weapon and singles out Augusta.

"I don't much care who wins the war in the end, but I know a powerful opponent when I see one, and I'm always glad to accept a challenge." Shen moves into a combat stance, breathing in, and taking not only crisp night air, but potent energies that pool in his belly and then flow to his limbs.

You give them both permission and encouragement to fight. They step forward, and the troops around them step back. Soon a grand circle is made, with the four combatants at its center.

Juno positions herself opposite Shen, and Augusta does the same with Legion. Shen begins reading Juno's every movement, planning a route of attack. Her shield no doubt presents a challenge, but his speed should make it possible. Legion on the other hand fights purely with power and instinct. Dodging arrows on the approach, and then two swords with his one will not be simple, but you do not doubt his ability.

Shen is the first to move, dashing at Juno with the speed of a hunting hawk, testing her guard with a powerful kick that is taken dead center on her shield. He bounces back, landing on his feet just in time to narrowly evade a powerful thrust from Juno's lance that creates a gust of wind strong enough to knock over a row of troops around the inside of the circle.

Legion attacks as well, coming in for a thrust, parrying arrows one by one. his speed is not quite enough though, and he takes a shaft to the leg, though it does not stop him from charging.

Juno toys with Shen for a short while, allowing him to attack her shield, and merely pushing him back before following through with a good thrust. You think they are evenly matched until suddenly, after a strong punch knocks aside her shield, Juno flaps her great golden wings and sends Shen rolling back. He recovers in time to see her taking to the air, wings beating against the night sky.

She dives like a bird of prey, lance pointed, and manages to cut Shen's side as he evades, planting her weapon firmly into the stone floor, at least two feet deep. Shen dances away, clutching his side, and gritting his teeth.

You tell Shen to get his ass in gear, especially if he ever hopes to stand a true chance against you. He hears this, and freezes. As Juno yanks her lance from the floor, shaking the soil from its tip, the troops begin shouting for Shen to finish her off. She comes at him again, a thrust so perfect it would make a horseman cry, and catches him in the stomach, penetrating before he can evade. You think he might be done, until you see both of his hands gripping the lance's tip tightly, preventing it from digging more than an inch deep. His feet struggle to keep traction on the floor, and he himself seems to be giving everything he has to stand firm, but Juno gives him no chance to rest. She beats her wings again, and drives Shen backward, up and into the stone wall of the citadel. He collides, cracking the brick and crying in pain, but still his strength holds, and the lance does not kill. Still airborne, Juno brings back her lance with Shen still attached, and proceeds to thrust seven more times, smacking him into the side of the building and sending bits of brick and blood all about. You can almost feel the pain Shen must be enduring.

Finally, on the eighth thrust, Shen brings his feet up and plants them on the wall, using the strength of his legs to prevent himself from hitting it again. Juno is unimpressed, electing to merely withdraw her weapon and let Shen fall to the ground. Juno lands as well, and levels her weapon once more, ready to go in for the kill. Shen raises a hand to halt her advance.

"Before you come at me, let me ask you something," he says, panting. Juno tilts her head. "How do you feel?"

She is confused, as are you to be honest. You can't tell where he's going, but you're eager to see.

"I only ask because I've been drinking from you for the last minute. If you plan to attack me, do not do it with a weapon made from pure magical energy, you shining woodpecker of a woman."

Juno's eyes finally betray an emotion, and she looks down to take stock of herself. You didn't notice it yourself, but now that it's been pointed out, you can see that her luster is no longer the equal of her twin. She is still a brilliant gold, playing against the deep blue of the night sky, but she is an ember of her original self. She must know it too, for she bares teeth against Shen, and cries in anger as she thrusts her lance once more.

This time Shen takes a deep breath, parry's the lance, and steps in with full confidence. His right hand, still doused in his own blood, begins to burn a brilliant gold, and collides with Juno's tower shield, bending it and knocking it from her grasp to clatter on the ground. She is shocked, as are the men, and does not see his knee rising up to collide with her chin, sending her flying backward toward you like a helpess ragdoll.

You step aside and let Juno crash into the floor with a great thud. She seems to be breathing, but unconscious. You brush her aside a bit, and turn your attention back to the others.

Shen, now kneeling and breathless, calls to Legion, who is still clashing against Augusta.

"Dead man! I've finished my meal! Hurry up now, so we can be off!" Shen's taunt hits home, and Legion seems a bit frustrated. Augusta looks over just long enough to see her ally in a heap on the ground. Her eyes go from stoic to furious, and using both hands she throws Legion off of her. He stumbles but regains his balance, coming at her again.

"My sister! You will not have fallen for naught!" cries the silver idol, swinging her sabers wildly as Legion approaches. His speed allows him to parry both blades, but he cannot attack, and in time his guard fails and he takes a cut across the chest.

He leaps back and clutches the wound, which seeps green mist instead of blood. He looks at it, then at Shen, and scoffs.

"I had hoped to conceal this trump card from you, eastern man, in hopes that I might use it to defend my master. But if it is his will that these warriors fall, I cannot hold back."

Legion plants his sword in the ground and raises an arm, facing the palm toward Augusta, who moves her sabers into a defensive position and knocks and arrow.

"Feel relieved. Your training bore fruit. Just not the fruit you intended to plant." Legion lets out a cry of pain, and suddenly wounds rip open in his forearm, spewing more green mist which coalesces into a stream, thickening until it resembles an orb of heavy smoke. Just as the smoke approaches Augusta, with the speed of an arrow and then some, you are able to see it form into the rough shape of a face, screaming in torment, before it collides with her and engulfs her. Augusts begins coughing and sputtering, distracted long enough to allow Legion to approach.

She collapses, still coughing, and receives a hard stomp to the side of the head as Legion slides his blade home on his back. his wounds still seep green mist, but he doesn't seem overly concerned.

Legion turns back to you, bows, and rises.

"Your will is done, My Dark Lord."

Shen and Legion each scoop up their once opponents, and drag them to the gates of the citadel. They hold them aloft, and announce to those within that their final defenders are fallen, and further resistance will only prolong the inevitable.

There is no sound from within, and after so many minutes, you grow tired, and merely have your men force open the gates.

On the other side, there is a dark stairway that leads up. You lead the troops up, and follow the torches on the walls. What you find within is quite a spectacle.

Hundreds of bodies lay scattered on the carpeted ground, each pale and splayed in agony. Beside each is a small cup spilling wine onto the floor. It doesn't take magic to know what occurred here.

Each and every room is filled with these corpses, all the same in death, save for one in the central chamber, a solar that looks up at the night sky. There, a babe lay in it's blood, in the middle of a ritual circle the size of a tennis court. You cover it with a sheet, and look away. Even babes deserve dignity in death.

The men search the citadel and find none left alive. The idols Juno and Augusta are held in captivity, robbed of their weapons and armor, and the men are wobbling on legs made of jelly. You yourself are a bit worn out, but to sleep when the men may not is at the very least rude.

They peer up at you, confused, and suddenly realize what has happened.

"Foul conqueror! You do not even give us the dignity of death by combat! Slay us now, or we shall never cease to resist your evil grip!"

Or so Juno shouts, but she cannot even summon the strength to break free of simple chains. You turn to Vanessa, who seems to be sniffing the air.

"Hmmm. Daddy, these two smell funny. Bad funny. It kind of turns my stomach." She chews her fingernail a bit as she ponders the implications. You too have no sure idea why these two should be special. They still seem to be fused with powerful magic, but something about it is off.

"Indeed, I sense the presence of multiple beings about them, and not just two. My senses are dulled from the fighting, but even I can tell they are something beyond mortal," says Legion.

"The flow of energy within them is so smooth, and yet I doubt that they have spent decades meditating on their bodies. Even I cannot force the life force within me to remain so constant," Shen points out.

"My expertise is in runecraft, but I have heard rumors about an experiment that resembles this phenomenon. The ritual circle in the solar is surely connected, but I would need days to decipher its more intricate patterns," advises Gilbert.

"Um, I guess they're pretty?" says Kyle, to finish.

It seems none of your men know the first thing about what to do with the idols, but each can provide a piece of the puzzle. You should give one of them time alone to see what they can discover.

Make it clear that Kyle is not allowed anywhere near them.
>>
>>45849052
You forbid Kyle from coming anywhere near the room, which seems to actually depress him a bit. Meanwhile, you let Gilbert have run of the place, examining both the idols and ritual circle to his heart's content.

During the three days he needs to analyze things, you must take action within the city. Though the enemy forces have either routed, died, or joined you out of fear, the citizens are still dismissive of your authority. When you have your heralds announce all of your new laws, they even go so far as to hurl stones and fruit at the men, injuring them badly.

In more serious tones, tone down the laws a bit (miniskirts and hot pants, and raves over orgies) for now, but they are our subjects and they will listen to us. See if there's demands that they want that don't let them choose how the city is run (lower food prices, new wells, cleaning up the shit of our soldiers from the river) to help build good faith.

You tell your men to stay their hands, violent though some of the people may be, and instead lend themselves to rebuilding, and aiding those stricken by the war. You feed the hungry from the food stores, pay workers to rebuild houses and shops, and reimburse shopkeepers for stock lost in the conflict. After three days, things seem to be settling down, and Gilbert has made a discovery just as promised. You meet him in the solar at midday.

"My Dark Lord, I have finished puzzling out the language of this ritual. I suspected it from the beginning, but now I have proof that this circle was intended to sacrifice the essence of the babe we could at the center. It's body was left, and it's soul was used to call down the power of the deities of the nation, Juno and Augusta, for which the very walls are named. Those women, chained in that storage room, are but projections of a collective will. There are two ways to release them, that I know of. One, we convince the people of this country to stop believing in the goddesses they've worshiped for centuries. Or two, we kill them outright. Sadly, this will kill the two vessels used to host the goddesses, but it will rid us of them. I must warn you, their wills are immovable, even through magics. Either we keep them prisoner, or they will rise against us, potentially with the citizens on their side. The choice is yours, or course."

Gods are also so meddlesome. But what must be done must be done.

You order Legion to finish off the idols. He bows and heads to their holding room with all haste. You stay a bit longer and converse with Gilbert about some potential projects in the company's future, and after a few minutes Legion returns, though not with two severed heads, but one very afraid young boy.

"My Dark Lord, I discovered young Kyle among the condemned. I attempted to carry out your orders, but he protected them. I will return to my task, but shall he suffer punishment as well?"

"Wait! Stop! Don't kill them! Just untie them and let me take care of everything!" Kyle flails his arms frantically, trying to sound more grown up than he is. Gilbert chuckles.

"The boy is foolish. They have tricked him to their side. Be done with them, or they'll come back to bite you, My Dark Lord."

All this arguing is giving you a migraine.

You have Legion drag Kyle back with you to the holding room. Inside, the idols sit in their chairs, still chained, still slightly glowy. You seal the door, lock it, and have Legion drop Kyle on the ground. you tell him you will not free them, but you will give him a chance to explain himself before his inevitable punishment. He stands, dusts himself off, and takes a breath before beginning.

"I was listening to what Gilbert said. I think I can help, but you have to believe me! If you're worried about them attacking you, just untie one, and I promise you'll see I'm right!" You think, but the dangerous look in the eyes of both idols make you too nervous. You refuse. He stomps on the ground and ruffles his own wavy hair before sighing.

"Fine. Then just let me show you." He turns around and faces the idols. They look at him with mild disdain, but say nothing as he takes a deep breath and lets out his singing voice. You cover your ears reflexively. Legion seems unaffected.

Kyle sings an angelic note, holding it for as long as he can. While he does, the two idols seem to grow tired, slumping over in their chairs. At the same time, their auras fade, and their gold and silver clothing begin to turn a dingy white.

Kyle runs out of breath and clutches his stomach, turning back to face you.

You cross your arms. He seems to catch on, flinching and bowing his head.

"My Dark Lord. Please, grant me Vanessa for just a short while, and I promise I can save these women." You don't really feel like it, but you're bored enough to let him have one last chance. You snap your fingers and summon Vanessa, who appears in a puff of smoke. She is dressed in her suit again, and nibbling on a bit of candy from the town.

"Daddy!" she shouts, wrapping you in a hug. She pops the lolli from her mouth and offer you a lick, but you refuse for now, and ask Kyle what he's planning.

"Okay, I need you to hold Vanessa like a baby. Cradle her. Vanessa, close your eyes and relax." Vanessa's face lights up.

"I think we should do it Daddy, Kyle seems like he knows what he's doing."

You feel a bit odd about doing this in front of your thrall and a young boy, but...

You scoop Vanessa up and hold her just like when she was a girl and scraped her knee on the thorny bloodstone outside the house. She coos in your arms and wiggles about until she's in a comfortable position, with her arms tucked in and her head resting on your chest. You lean your head down and plant a soft kiss on her forehead, which makes her blush, and hide her face in her hands as she stifles a small laugh. Even Legion feels his teeth begin to hurt from this amount of saccharine affection. Kyle claps his hands and shakes himself off.

"Okay, now I just need you to sing to her. A lullaby. Like to make her sleep."

You turn a bit red, but when you look down and see Vanessa's eyes looking back, full of love and adoration and anticipation, you cannot help it. You clear your throat, and sing her favorite song from her infancy.

The notes aren't as easy to hit as they used to be, but Vanessa doesn't seem to mind. Her breathing begins to steady, and suddenly Kyle joins in, mimicking your words and patterns. He learns the lyrics quickly, and soon you go silent and allow him to continue alone, singing in his heavenly voice.

The two idols slump over completely, and their auras fade to nothing, along with their gold and silver clothing. They transform from two doll-like creatures to two women, tall and fair, with gold and silver hair. When Kyle finishes, they are totally asleep.

When you look down, you find Vanessa peacefully dozing as well. Legion seems fine. Kyle exhales and bows to you.

"There you are sir. The soul of a babe bound them. Babes only need to be comforted." You notice something in his eye that he wipes away. In any event, the two seem utterly harmless now. Perhaps you should take some time to see what they know.

You tell Legion to keep an eye on things while you take Vanessa somewhere more comfortable. He agrees, eyeing Kyle with more than a little distaste.

You bring her out of the room and up some stairs to a bed chamber you'd been using to keep an eye on the city, gently placing her into bed and pulling a sheet over her. She curls up under the covers and hugs one of the pillows tight to her chest. You brush a bit of hair from her face and go back to work.

When you arrive in the holding room again, Kyle is gone, and the women are awake and alert. You'll deal with Kyle later, but for now you need to learn what you can from these two. You approach them carefully. The first, once Juno, still retains luxurious blonde hair in long curls, as well as blue eyes that seem quite stern. The second, once Augusta, has silvery hair and dark skin, as if she'd spent her whole life in the sunlight, and keen eyes that seem to take in everything. Both are quite striking in their own way, and neither seems afraid. You ask their names to start.

"I am Sophia, and my shield-sister is Caela. We are the generals of the Second Legion Sun Tigers and Fifth Legion Lunar Bears. We were to give our lives to defeat you. I take it by your presence and our predicament, we were not successful."
