I barge into Fortune's parking lot. The empty pad that once held the building still leaves a pristine white space.
Next to that pristine white space, are two rectangular dumpsters. Most people think of them as places to put their garbage.

"Come ooon! Get out of the dumpster!" I yell, storming up to the metal box as Mom trails behind me.

"Sweetie, I don't think-"

"I know you're in there!" I yell, giving it a kick just for good measure.

There's a thrashing inside.
A tiny, almost miniscule voice sounds out from inside, "Why?"

"Because this is where the garbage goes!"
"But it's where I go too, right?"
"NO! GET OUT OF THERE RIGHT NOW!"

I am Itsukuma Masami.
Yuck, this girl smells TERRIBLE! Who told her that her home was in the dumpster, anyway?

"Listen, Clown."
"Uh huh?" She climbs out from the disuse and the filth. She smells awful, still.

"We have Asai trapped inside of a card, and we want to de-power him so he doesn't try to take over the city once more. Do you know why he isn't turning human like you did? Is there something about him that's different from all the other monsters?"

Yeah, that's basically the gist of what is going on.

She leans against her 'home', and thinks about that question. I can tell Mom wants to hug her, but realizes how poor of an idea that would be right now.

"Well, he's always been different."

"I mean, mentally. What is different about him as a monster that might prevent him from becoming human?"

She thinks about the question for a few minutes, but mostly appears confused and lost.
"I don't get it."

"First off." I pull her away from the dumpster. "Who told you that you belong in a dumpster, anyway?!"

That question catches her off-guard. Like that was something that no one had ever asked her before and the answer should be self-evident.

"The chairman. I played a joke on him one day, and he used his little ring thing to tell me that this is where I should go. It made so much sense at the time that I haven't left."

"That's TERRIBLE!" I shout, right in her face. I never liked that Chairman guy anyway.
"Why? I mean, it's where I belong, right?"

"From here on out, you are NOT listening to creepy men with mind-controlling rings!" I pout.
"Is that what you came here to tell me?"

"Sort of, but I'm more interested in Asai. Have you ever seen him use any magic?"
Clown-girl immediately opens her mouth to answer, but then hesitates.
"Magic.. from Asai." Her face blanks. She comes close several times to opening her mouth with a response, but seems to lose it midway.

"He's.. had to have used it. I'm sure." Is her response. "I mean, he does that thing with the doors in the building. That counts, right?"

Mom answers for me, "The doors in the building is his building working for him. I can do that with my house. I'm not really sure that counts? Have you seen him use any cards recently? Or maybe fight?"

"Oh no, Asai never fights." She seems, almost shaken? "In fact, he never really leaves that building except for that one time, last time."

"So," I adjust my voice, "what about the building, then? When I shrinked it, it was like a big angry block of animated steel. What's the deal with that? Doesn't Asai have control over it?"

I don't understand why, but the clown is leaning in closer to me. Yuck! I can smell the trash on her still!
"This is kind of a secret, so don't tell him that I told you, okay?"

I don't know if she's joking or not, especially considering that Asai is in my pocket and there's no one else in this parking lot.

"He doesn't really control the building. It's more like it's a part of him." She leans back. "He told me this when I asked him why he didn't just use cards and fight you himself. It's because he'd have to find a way to make the building use the same card, too. Which is why he only used a select few cards that he could apply to himself and the building."

"Is that where..." My mind clicks, "You came in? Could you use magic cards, too?"
"I tried." She sighs, "But I'm just not made of the right stuff. If I was, I would have probably used it to get in trouble."

"So you're saying, Asai is two people?"
"No, he's two parts of the same person."

I'm not sure I understand.

"So, why does he have a person-shaped part of him?"

"He explained it to me like it was the, good part of him. And the building is the evil part."

This is making even less and less sense.

"Why does he even HAVE an evil side?! And you're telling me the 'Asai' I know is his GOOD side?"
That's terrifying!
"Like, is that the best he could do?!"

"I don't get it either, to be honest. I was just the person who went out and did his bidding. Now I live in a box full of garbage."

I can't tell if she's being facetious or not or if she seriously doesn't see any problem with that.

"So, is the person-shaped part of him human? I saw him bleed, once."
She ponders. "Well, I don't know how it could be. This magic thing is mysterious to me. Can you just, create humans like that?"

"I don't know how humans are made." I answer with utmost truth.

Then I turn to Mom.
"How are humans made?"

She blushes, and then laughs nervously.
"I-I'll tell you some other time. Let's talk about Asai some more."

>"No, I want to know how humans are made."

"Hey." I reluctantly touch her sleeve and tug on it. "Come with us for a bit."

She recoils, like I'm going to steal her from her home. "W-why?"
"'Cause, we need to think of what to do with Asai and you have insider knowledge."

There's a grumble and a stomp.
"I gave you what you asked for! Just leave me alone!"

I grab her before she tries climbing back in the box again.
"You want revenge on Asai too, right?"
"What?"
"He treated you like a tool for years, aren't you just a little upset at him?"

"Not enough to leave home." She crosses her arms. "I just wanted to have fun. If he's not around, and I'm free to do what I want, I can have all the fun in the world, right?"

She then tries to turn around and get BACK IN DUMPSTER! EW! QUIT IT!

I tug at her sleeve once more, "Listen, listen. Wouldn't it be fun just to tease him one last time, though? He's probably going to jail."
"Also," Mom interjects. "The city will probably be taking your 'home' away within the next month as Asai won't be around to pay the garbage bill."

This makes her jump.
"T-they're going to take my home away?!"
"It's not your home! It belongs to the city!" I yell at her.

"Listen, you can live in the trash can behind my home." Mom tries to bargain with her.
She's not convinced, "How big is it?"

"It's... big."

She turns away from the iron box, and then offers to take your hand.
"Okay, fine. Let's go see Asai."

"No no." I grab her arm, yuck, now it's all over me. "Before we do anything else, it's bath-time for you."

"What?!" She seems shocked. "I smell just fine!"

"No you don't!" I stomp my foot. "You've been in a dumpster for days!"
"I smell fine to me!"

"That's really low standards!" I grab her arm again. "We can worry about this when being near you doesn't make both of us sick!"

"But-"

--

We get her to the nearby park and find a shower that hasn't been absolutely destroyed.

After much, much protesting and struggling, I feel she's at least presentable at this point. There isn't much I can do about her clothes, but her skin is at least to the point where she isn't going to be repulsive.

That's good, because the fight just to get her this clean was barely worth the effort.
I dry her hair with a towel, she continues to fight me the whole way.

"Okay, sto- No, STOP!" She fights my efforts to finish washing the remaining soap from her curls.
"Why do you hate being clean?!"

"I love being clean, and it's none of your business! I shower when I want to!"

Ugh. The idea of living with this girl sounds stressful already.

Her clothes aren't terrible, but that's a low bar to achieve. I give them back to her and she quickly dresses herself, as if every second of being washed was pure torture.

"Okay, now, off to see Asai."
"Wait." She pulls at my hand. "I'm not going back in THAT CARD Am I?!"

"Of course, how else are you going to see him?"

The look on her face, is that of absolute terror.

"No, no, stop. You'll be with me the whole time. When I leave, you're leaving with me. Okay? It will only be for a few minutes."
She glares at me, worry combined with fear.

"You promise?"
"Pinky promise!"

The clown-girl doesn't seem convinced.

I'm starting to lose my patience with her.
"What happened in there that bothered you so much, anyway?!"
"I don't know what you mean." She runs a towel through her hair.
"I left you alone one moment, and you were fine! You were taunting me even! Then thirty minutes later, you were in tears like you were abandoned. What happened in those thirty minutes?

"I just-" She stops.
Then her eyes seem to scan the room-sized shower you two are in.
"I just don't like very big spaces. It's why I like the garbage box. It's small, and I feel safe there."

"Do you just, not feel safe anywhere else?"
"Nope."

That's depressing.
I reach over and give her a hug, and she squirms against my grip like I'm violently assaulting her.
"What are you doing?!"
"This is called a hug."
"And why are you doing it to me?"

That's even more depressing!
"Stop saying depressing things."
"I don't know what that means, let go."

I let go of her, but maintain eye contact.
"Listen, I know you were probably treated poorly, but I'm going to help you with that."
"I don't want help."
"No, but I want to help you. Let's go talk to the first source of your problems, and maybe you can get whats on your mind off." You extend your hand to her.

She reluctantly takes your hand. You lead her outside to find Mom sitting on a bench. She agrees that the clown-girl's stench is much more managable at this point.

With a sigh of relief, she also takes your hand. With a quick thought, you're off to visit the evil man in the card.

Hold on.
Something isn't right.

Why is Asai sleeping?

Does he even NEED to sleep?
I mean.. I don't know.

Something's up. He's not here waiting for me with some little retort or jab. Nor is he here trying to scheme against me or even think of something mean to say.

Is this some kind of trick?

I lean in close to him and listen. His breathing is still steady, and his heart hasn't increased or changed pace.
So he's either really good at tricking me or he's sleeping.

That can't be right.

Oh! Wait! I forgot!

I gently tiptoe past Mom and the clown. Upstairs, I listen intently on the room which I think the monster may still be trapped.
The door still seems intact, and there's no sound coming from inside.

Is that thing asleep, too?

I speed back down the stairs, and stand over Asai.

Okay, if this is a trick, he must be waiting for the right time to scare me.
So, I'm going to scare him instead!

I bet, if I try to act on him, he'll defend himself. Then I can find out what kind of magic he has! Win/win!

I stand over him for just a second, and make sure that this isn't the right time he's chosen to act.
Nope, perfect.

With no sudden warning, my fist winds up and punches him right in the stomach!

"COUGH, OUGH, UGUH." He sputters, and wheezes.
"Uh!" Oh no! I didn't think that would work! "SORRY! I-"

Wait. Why am I apologizing. This is Asai.
Good.

Okay, he's just making me angry. This is probably his plan.

I need some professional advice with him and his stupidity. Someone who is well-versed in his dumb tricks.

"Mom, can I talk with you for a moment."
She has about the same look on her face as I do.

Asai leans back onto the couch, and sighs. Mom and I walk into the other room.

"So-"
"I don't know." Mom says, with no hesitation.

Which I find surprising, and a little frightening!

"What do you mean 'I don't know'?"
"I don't know how to make him stop acting that way." Mom grumbles. "How do you tell him to stop acting like a dunce and take things seriously?"

"B-but that's what I was asking you!"

"This is just, how he acts. It's how he deals with stress, it's how he deals with calm, it's how he talks to his co-workers."
"Well someone needs to make him stop, because this is serious! Does he not realize that we're thinking of ways to put him in jail?"

"To him, it's all just a big dumb game. I wouldn't be surprised if he still thinks he'll just put the building back and go to work the next day."

I don't believe that. No one can be that dumb.

"So how do we reason with him?"
"I guess, and I don't really know the answer to that; the best thing is probably to convince him that working with us is the best thing he can do right now."

"But how do we do that?"
"I guess.. just make him realize that we're in control somehow."

"How do we do that? He doesn't take anything seriously!"

She shrugs.

"But how do we reason with him?!"
"I've never been able to reason with him. I don't know why you think I'll be able to starting now."

Oh no, it really is hopeless.

"Hang on." My mind stirs. "I need to go check that monster. I find it strange how calm he is considering that he can't escape. Something must be up with it."

"Okay, I'll try to stall Asai while you're gone." Mom pats me on the head. "If you need any help, just call out and I'll come running."
"Thanks, Mom."

She heads off into the living room while I run upstairs. Maybe if I'm quick about this, Asai won't even notice that I went to check on it.

I'm not exactly convinced that either him or his monster are REALLY trapped in here.

I rush to the top of the stairs and then stand on the precipice to the guest bedroom. Definitely where the monster is still hiding.

With a gulp, my hand wraps around the doorknob and swings open the wooden door.
Oh no, there's fluff EVERYWHERE!
That thing has made a mess of this place! It's going to take forever to clean up!

That thing is also..
It's also curled up in the center of the guest bedroom. It's gauntlets clenching bits of fabric and fluff.

Why is it also hugging its knees?
It almost looks, pitiful.

I cautiously approach it. It turns its head away from me as I do.

"Uh."
It's not responding.

"Are you... okay?"
It looks up at me, and then looks away.

This is getting weirder by the second!

"Are you, a part of Asai?"

"Go away." It says, in a deep baritone.
"No. Why are you acting like this?"

"Because." The monster almost seems to scoot away from me. "I've been trapped here with my evil half, and I'm not sure I'll ever be free again."

Wait, 'evil half'?

Thanks for the thread everyone. Apologies we couldn't continue a bit longer, but I'm about to be in a car for about two and a half hours. So I'm not really looking forward to that.
Thanks to everyone for the thread, please let me know what you think of it. That monster design I chose for the building is probably going to change
